Hey! This is a bizarre ask but hopefully a welcome one after *gestures at the destruction and fire*. I’m completely new to the Loki/thorki fandom, having essentially come in via the exit door by watching the Loki tv series first. I was honestly just watching it for junk value to have something in the background while I knit. However, when I realized that I didn’t understand anything by the middle of Ep. 1, I went back to watch Thor 1 so I could get what was going on. And HOLY SHIT I was utterly captivated by Loki’s character in the original movie, as well as by the Loki-Thor and Odin family dynamics. I’ve now watched through the films and have been increasingly disappointed by the portrayal of Loki (since Avengers 1 frankly) save a few glimmers of good characterization here and there.

I can’t believe that I’m getting myself into another queer coded (and now more than coded wtf) “villain” with a tragic backstory who’s done dirty by the fandom at large, but here we are! I’m also super into thorki because goddamn… they sure do have a Dynamic™.

So I guess my question is, what is actually good here? I feel like I’ve been trying to fight my way back to Kenneth Branagh!Loki, and have been largely unsuccessful within canon content. Do you have suggestions for a newcomer re: fics, fanart, and meta that actually treats Loki seriously? (and thorki as well?)

And this isn't a bizarre ask at all. It was really nice to receive actually! And yeah! I'm so glad you went back and watched the originals. The TV Show character is a completely new character played by the same actor who has nothing in common with the original character (who yes is absolutely fascinating and captivating and multilayered). Honestly I just think of the tv character as Larry, Loki's dumb lookalike cousin bc they have nothing in common lol. So glad the show led to you discovering good content...and thorki. And yeah Thor 2011 is amazing! It's so underrated. If you want meta relating to that and also just gushing about the film you can def check out my Thor 2011 tag.

Duke Thomas/The Signal Fic Recs

This is for @capttain-emo who saw me reblog this wonderful rec list by @stories-from-the-batcave , and asked if I knew any more. (I highly recommend those, btw, I love all the fics on that list! Yes, that includes the one I wrote in there) Duke Thomas is my favorite Batfam member, so I have a bunch! Unfortunately, there isn’t as much Duke content out there as I’d hope - people just don’t seem to like him as much for some reason? It’s sad. So, there are gonna be a couple here written by me. 1. How many works do you have on AO3?

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

516,223. I never looked that much at my statistics page before so that’s exciting to look at.

3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

Oh my gosh, so many. 25 different ones on ao3, 9 more that were never cross posted from the pit of voles, and at least 5-10 fandoms from prior to either of those sites. 5. What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

I’m torn between three actually:

Dormant (Hetalia) I always say I love two endings, happy endings and greek tragedies, but I rarely write the greek tragedies. Dormant is one of my exceptions. Hetalia has one character who is hinted at being immortal, and I took that and wrote a fic about an Extinction Level Event and him watching the other characters die around him while he can’t. I’ve always been really proud of this fic, despite it being one of the saddest things I’ve ever written.

Unclean (Roswell New Mexico) Which is almost the darkest fic I’ve ever written. It’s about Michael’s time in the home of the “Fundamentalist Religious Freaks” and the exorcism he mentioned. It ends after the drifter and is very much hurt, no comfort.

Hell is… (Roswell New Mexico) This is a ficlet I wrote for a prompt. And it’s a dark take about what could have happened to the pod squad if they’d been caught after the murders.

6. What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

Almost all my fics have happy endings. So, what is the happiest? Probably either:

Deck the Halls (Roswell New Mexico) An Echo & Malex Christmas fic that is as fluffy as a fic that involves the Pod Squad, Christmas, and being attacked by anti-alien paramilitary groups can be. (Also, Echo has a cat called Grisabella the Glamour Cat because Max should not be allowed to name anything and nobody can convince me that wouldn’t be absolute canon in a committed Echo relationship.)

In Over Their Heads (Yuri on Ice) A Seungchuchu with a fake engagement and unrequited feelings that aren’t actually unrequited. (And where Sara is Seung’s best friend because apparently I always write them that way and have no regrets.)

7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you've written?

I don’t write crossovers. Because I rarely find myself sold on the idea that the two stories exist in the same verse or can think of a way the characters would interact that would inspire me to write a fic.

8. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, and pretty much anything. M/M, F/F, M/F, and Poly. Plus a large variety of kinks. (Yes, I was often on kink memes back in my LJ days.)

9. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I try to? I used to never respond because I didn’t know what to say, and then I tried to respond to every one, but there would be long gaps between when I checked and then I felt bad for responding so late, and sometimes I still don’t know what to say so I just end up not replying. XD

10. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Surprisingly very little. Some harsh criticism - one in particular actually hit young me hard enough to stop writing for a while back in the day. But I tend to get more hate for my meta than my fics. Which is odd since my fics are usually very much representative of my meta.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I’m aware of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Only one - a Dynasty Warrior fic of mine about the bond between CaoCao and Xiahou Dun was translated into Chinese. I mean, Dynasty Warriors is a video game literally based on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which is based on chinese history, so for someone to want to translate one of my fics about it was incredible to me. 13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No. I would probably drive a co-author nuts, tbh. I’m so inconsistent. And at the same time, I have a thousand thoughts.

14. What's your all time favourite ship? to write for?

I don’t actually have one? RNM has become my top fandom to write for, there’s no doubt. And while I think Malex is in the most fics among them, I’m not sure if that number surpasses other ships in other fandoms I’ve written for altogether. In fact, according to ao3, only 15 fics of my 40 RNM even have Malex in them at all, and not all of those are Malex-centric. In fact in at least 3, they’re a side ship.

I’d say that I probably write almost as many fics that are gen, friendship, family/found family feels, and character introspection as I do shipping fics. Which doesn’t really leave room for any one ship to be at the forefront.

15. What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

None, I hope. LOL. There’s definitely a few that I have left uncompleted for a long time and feel guilty about but I’m not ready to say I’ve abandoned them yet. There’s a ton of ideas I have written down that I may never actually write. But none I have started that I don’t want to finish.

16. What are your writing strengths?

The three consistent compliments I’ve gotten are: I capture the characters’ voices in my dialogue. My writing tone is unique. My smut is super hot. XD (I have no explanation for the last one, because to be honest ¾ of my smut is always foreplay.)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Action scenes. I have been told before that my action scenes are very confusing. Also, I rarely give physical descriptions of people’s appearances because I honestly rarely stop to consider what they’re wearing or how their hair is done.

18. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

It’s common in a couple of fandoms of mine, and I actually don’t mind it. Depending on the fic, it can be more realistic to me than otherwise. (I just appreciate it when the translation is also provided.)

19. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Summary: Virgil’s suspicious of Logan’s motives now that he’s started using Roman’s tickle spellbook as well. He figures he might as well be proactive and get the nerd, first.

Logan had used the spellbook against Patton, that much Virgil knew. He also knew how to trust his gut, and his gut was saying that now that Logan got a taste of the power of tickle spells, he wasn’t going to stop, and it was only a matter of time before Virgil became his target. They all would be subject to his experiments with the spells sooner or later.

Not that Virgil had a problem with that (and not that he’d ever admit to that), but he had to show Logan that he wasn’t just going to be taken down.

Or maybe he was just looking for an excuse to finally use the tickle spells himself, and he was too nervous to use them against Roman or Patton because they would stop at nothing to get him back. Logan generally was harder to provoke, he saw tickling as “childish and embarassing,” even though they all saw through those lies.

Logan loved to play like that just as much as the rest of them, he was just even worse than Virgil at letting loose to have some silly fun.

Either way, Logan seemed to be less likely to be as ruthless when getting him back.

So Virgil marched into Roman’s room without knocking, ignored the indignant “hey” from the princely side himself, and started flipping through the tickle spellbook.

“What, uh, what are you doing?” Roman asked nervously.

“Don’t worry,” Virgil hummed absentmindedly. “I’m not coming for you. Yet.”

Roman fell into a nervous silence after that. Virgil simply continued flipping through the spellbook for some long minutes, trying to decide what he wanted to try.

Master of Gargalesis. While the idea of a body transformation was horrifying (what if he forgot the detransformation words and was stuck like that forever? What if he said the transformation phrase wrong and horribly disfigured himself?), the idea of tortuous claws to dig into Logan’s ticklish spots was too tempting.

So he memorized the detransformation words (very carefully) and spoke the words to activate the spell aloud (very carefully), and watched in awe as his fingers transformed before him.

They grew long and into dull points (pointy enough to be tickly, but not enough to hurt). It looked a little weird, if Virgil was being honest, but not as horrifying as he had been worrying about. He nodded in satisfaction before walking to the door.

Only he couldn’t managed to open it with his new extremities.

“Uh, Roman?” He called quietly. “Can you, uh, get the door for me?”

Roman barked out a laugh and walked over to open the door. “Have fun, I want whoever you’re getting to be screaming loud enough with laughter that I can bask in it from here.”

Virgil snorted and shook his head. “Yeah, okay, Prince Weirdo.”

Virgil walked down the hall until he reached Logan’s door, knocking on it carefully, so as to not hurt himself or scrape off the paint with his new claws. Virgil heard movement from inside and quickly hid his hands behind his back (since the claws wouldn’t fit in his hoodie pockets), trying to look innocent.

“Yes?” Logan asked as he opened the door.

“I… have a question. Could I come in?”

“Of course,” Logan said easily as he stepped aside and let Virgil into the room. He shut the door behind them. “What can I help you with?”

“My question is…” Virgil said, unable to keep his devious grin hidden any longer. “How much do you think these would tickle?” He asked, pulling his hands out from behind his back.

Logan gasped and backed away, seeming to forget he could escape through the doorway that was previously next to him.

“Now, Virgil,” he stuttered, already smiling nervously, “let’s not be too hasty.”

Virgil wiggled his claws menacingly and stalked toward Logan. Logan yelped and tripped over his own feet, falling back onto the bed with Virgil jumping on after him.

“Why don’t we test them out?” He asked teasingly, relishing in the growing blush on Logan’s face.

“Wait, wait!”

Virgil shrugged. “Nah.”

Logan instantly burst into loud laughter as Virgil targeted his sides, trying to dig in with just enough pressure to be devastatingly ticklish, but not enough to hurt. Logan thrashed around the bed so much that Virgil swung a leg over his thighs to straddle him.

“Well, I think they work rather nicely!” Virgil yelled brightly over Logan’s laughter.

Logan didn’t reply, all his energy being swallowed by laughing so desperately.

Virgil experimented with the claws a while longer. Scraping gently along Logan’s neck and ears with the pointed tips, digging them playfully into his stomach and sides, playing his ribs like the ticklish keyboard they were. At one point, he flipped around and went after Logan’s feet and digging in underneath and between his ticklish toes, leaving Logan howling and wailing in laughter.

“Mercy!” Logan eventually shrieked as Virgil dug the claws into the dips in his hips. “Vee, please!”

“Oh alright,” Virgil muttered playfully, like he was put out by the whole thing. He muttered the detransformation spell and collapsed on the bed next to Logan with a wide grin. “So, I take it they were rather tickly?”

Logan flushed and pushed lightly at Virgil’s shoulder. “Shut up.”

Virgil raised a teasing eyebrow. “Make me.”

Logan smirked at him. “You’ll regret that.”

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Hurdy

I love the game’s world and all the little stories and legends that fill it. Great atmosphere, great lore, so if you feel like getting a little worldbuildy and indulging in the scenery and its story, please do! A focus on the sense of camaraderie in a caravan would also be great (like people could do on Gamecube.....). Hurdy’s a bit of an odd duck for that theme, but maybe he hitched a ride at some point? With whom? Amidatty or De Nam maybe, among the nominated characters? I love the whole cast so anyone goes. Do they travel together enough for them to cotton onto the weirdness of the whole Gurdy situation? Got any run-in with Lady Mio? Or what’s his status after the miasma is lifted, can he go back to Tipa, can he/they begin to heal? What does healing even look like for him and Gurdy?

Ghost Trick: Cabanela

You know.. him. Dazzlingly OTT, untiring, rock-solid self-esteem, loyal to a fault, following a rhythm of his own, flawless intuition until it fails and it all burns down... him. I just want to see more of him doing stuff! The way he’s chill and open toward new people (like Sissel and Missile in ch15) makes him perfect to throw at most other characters and see how they react to the sparkles... I’d love some focus on how ridiculous his aesthetic is, half Saturday Night Fever half hardboiled detective half bubbly preteen (for a total of 150%) and yet he makes it work. Or how ruthless he can be, possibly for the sake of the people he cares for. The quote “The intimacy of big parties”. Him and Alma in the new timeline bonding over knowing (once Jowd has spilled the beans) but not remembering that terrible timeline. Some tropey scenario on the job. Snark-offs with Pigeon Man, by which I mean PM snarks and it bounces off him like water off a spotless white goose’s back. Dreaming Sissel but he’s strange... and wrong?

Ship-wise it’s only Cabanela/Jowd whenever it’s not infidelity, Cabanela/Alma in what-ifs and Cabanela/Alma/Jowd for me (and Lynne/Memry and Yomiel/fianSissel on the side). There are a bunch of shippy prompts in all my past letters - I would however reiterate here that Jowd. is. the worst tease. always.

Conversely, Cabanela/Lynne and Cabanela/Yomiel are NOTPs especially from Cabanela’s side. So while I appreciate the thick tension of a good Yomiel VS Cabanela confrontation like everyone and their cat, and also really appreciate a roughed-up Cabanela, and I do love Yomiel in his own right... I don’t want Cabanela being into it. Adrenaline junkie he may be but this hurts and his coat’s a mess and there’s no perfect winning scenario so he hates every second of it. (JOWD being into it is another matter altogether and he should probably mind his own business)

Kentucky Route Zero: Carrington, Cate

Act after act, intermission after intermission, I somehow didn’t see the arts rising to such a dominant theme in KRZ and it’s stuck with me since the ending finally hit. It’s great and moving. So! Who better than good ol’ antler man to linger in those feels! Carrington’s playwright adventures or Carrington&anyone you fancy, either way I’d listen to him ramble for a week and I would like to know more about his big dramatic plans. Or maybe him helping someone, more or less accidentally, by offering his unique takes? Overriding my “no canon retellings” DNW for a hot second, did he ever figure out what was going down in the Death of the Hired Man (or Nap of the Hired Man as the case may be) interlude?

For Cate, I’m mostly interested in two things: life on the river and mushrooms. Maybe both! The Echo river ecosystem is intensely fascinating to me as opposed to life on the surface and life on the Zero, and yet all these environments are permeable. So what’s a moment in her daily life that encapsulates the river? Someone they picked up on the Mammoth, a strange island that popped up at some point? Cate&Will bonding extremely welcome, I’m love Will. And then there’s the mushroom hunting. I don’t know much about mushrooms, but I do know that they’re cool. Cate seems to agree, so if you’ve got a story or pic in you about her and them mushrooms, I’d love to see it.

Pyre: Volfred Sandalwood

This is a Volfred solo, Volfred&literally anyone or Volfred/Tariq, /Oralech or /Tariq/Oralech request. If &Manley or &Brighton, I am not interested in more lenient takes on their characters than canon’s. fwiw I also enjoy Jodi/Celeste and Bertrude/Pamitha a lot!

I feel deeply for all of Pyre’s main themes - literacy, degrees of freedom, the fragile time that is the end of a historical cycle, nobodies rising up to the occasion, building a better society, and of course found family, “distance cannot separate our spirits” and all that jazz, and Volfred is squarely rooted at the center of all of them. Just please tell me things about my fave. His relationship to the Scribes (as a historian, a some kind of vision, via *ae or once he’s a star himself)? A ‘forced vacay’ Downside ending where he looks at the Union from afar and keeps living in this strange transformational place? Life in a cramped Blackwagon that was meant for like 5 people tops and is currently eight Nightwings, a herald and an orb? Since he picked him for the job to begin with, does he respect and cherish Hedwyn as he dang well should? What does it feel like to try and Read a herald? Was he ever in danger, in the Commonwealth or in the Downside? Does he puff up as prime minister because he’s nervous, and who can see past his hyper-professionalism and lend a hand? Please roast him big time about the votes he assigns to the various Nightwings in his planner? What’s his attitude toward the flame’s purification (what with being a tree but mostly like, as a general concept. He did nothing wrong!) (well he definitely said some things wrong and sometimes oftentimes the ego jumps out, but his intentions did nothing wrong)? When did his calculating approach fail him? Something with Pamitha along the lines of that edit that goes “Can we talk, one ten to another?"/"I am an eleven, my girl, but continue."? btw that ‘emphatically yes xeno’ from my general likes is only applicable here I guess so: emphatically yes xeno to both shippy interactions at all ratings and to gen explorations of what a Sap is like...

Shenmue: Qiu Hsu, Xianzi Bei

Cormorants... kung fu... cormorant kung fu. They turned out to be my faves in a very likeable cast and I’d love to see either or both of them slice-of-life-ing it up in Niaowu, or anywhere up or down the river. The rest of the cast is welcome to join! Did Ren end up at Liu He Hall for whatever reason, or did Shenhua chat up a cormorant, as she does? Id love to see a spookier mood too! Ghost story time in Liu Jiao shrine maybe?

The Silver Case: Catherine, Kodai Sumio, Kuroyanagi Shinko, Kusabi Tetsugorou, Macalister Edo, Morishima Tokio

I‘m all for the surrealism, big things being introduced and never picked up again, Rashomon’ing it up with six explanations for the same thing where no single one can be true, people dying and then popping up again like nbd... maybe the thing I like the most is characters transcending their humanity and looming over the dystopian world like ominous avatars. Correctness’ first ending had me swooning, that kind of mood is unparalleled. I have played TSC, FSR and 25W so far and have vague memories of K7. I’m aware of the “everything’s connected” readings but that’s not my main interest in these games. Mainly I see Lospass as a real island but also a metaphysical place of transformation first and foremost, where strange things happen that don’t make sense elsewhere, but I’m good with anything that works for your story! There are a few & prompts for these fine folks in my Press Start letter [here].

For Catherine, I’d love to see something along the lines of her YAMI appearance, on Lospass on her own or hanging out with another character of your choice (or Tokio again). Sumio leaves me at a loss for words... if you’ve played 25W, maybe an expansion of his [intense ethereal whooshing] moment? He’s a gust away from vanishing from existence altogether... &Sakura and/or &/Tetsu if you want. Or his time in prison or a return to Lospass or whatever’s going on with that one, really. For Shinko I’m itching for different team-ups! Throw her at anyone you like and see what happens! FSR-era Tetsu could be cool, or off-the-grid Tetsu, or Tetsu&anyone... as for Edo, I’d be curious to see his pov on anyone and anything! WAS the Flower Sun and Rain the friends we met along the way? And Tokio... oh Tokio. Something about older Tokio and his gaggle of tulpas (Slash and whatshisface from YUKI who looks suspiciously like YAMI Tokio himself?)? Any...thing...about any part of his life from Lifecut onwards? Any portentous encounters?

It all began, as these things have a tendency to, with a harmless enough enquiry.

Dhani had received an invitation to do an interview with the Rolling Stone magazine sometime late in November. Now, that was nothing unusual in his books. He had done his fair share of interviews over the years, in part due to being his father’s son, in part due to long being a musician of his own right. Now, this invitation, though? It caught his attention far more than any usual invitation to an interview would have done. Because it required some navigation, some shuffling dates around in his calendar – and someone else’s. Just that Dhani didn’t know who that mysterious other person was, that was supposed to be interviewed together with him.

Dhani reread the letter a good couple dozen times.

It said that he was to be interviewed together with someone he already knew. Well, he thought. I do know quite a lot of people…

Furthermore, it was someone also from the music field. Kinda obvious. He scratched his head. Still doesn’t limit the amount of people it could be.

The letter also hinted that it was someone he had known for a long time - long was relative, wasn’t it? – and someone he likely hadn’t seen in a long time either, given what was known to the magazine and the public. It was supposed to be a fun sort of reunion.

That last part was what Dhani couldn’t get off his mind. Sure, he was thrilled and excited that they were – hopefully – trying to do something nice for him, but... Just whom was he to be reunited with?

He knew that it was supposed to be a surprise. He knew better than to get impatient about this matter. And yet.

So, a few days after the date for the interview was finally settled on, he found himself unable to sleep and opened his messenger app.

And created a group chat with all the people he could think of that the Rolling Stone might want him to meet.

Dhani: Hi :) Any of you doing a Rolling Stone interview with a mysterious other person sometime mid-December?

Kris: Wtf mate it’s like 2am

Dhani: 2am where you are, perhaps

Kris: That’s fair

Dhani yawned into his hand and replied immediately after Kris’s response.

Dhani: 4am where I am

James: Not the one you’re looking for, btw. Sorry, pal

Dan: Nope

James: Want me to make enquiries?

Dhani: Nah, they probably won’t like that. Thanks tho

Dhani: Seriously, though. None of you guys were invited to do a RS interview mid-December? With me?

Jakob: Go to sleep, Dhanster

Dhani: Don’t tell me what to do, Dylan

Rufus: lol

Lily: Seriously, could you guys be any more married? :’D

Jakob: You know that’s not possible

Dhani: GUYS. Did y’all just evade my question??

Jakob: You should stop fretting abt this Dhani, it’s gonna be fine

Dhani: *eye-rolling emoji*

Jakob: Srsly, go to sleep Dhani, it’s late af

Lily: Yeah, we should all head to bed now. Sleep well, kiddos

Rufus: night, my American friends

Kris: Nite

Dhani sighed and put his phone away. His friends seemingly weren’t involved in all of this. He should probably try to get some sleep instead.

Rolling onto his back, he pulled the covers up to his chest and squinted. There was still light coming from the other side of the bed. Dhani rolled onto his side and stretched so that he could reach farther across the body that was blocking his movement. Then, he swatted lightly at the phone emanating the light in question.

“Cat.”

“Hmpf.” Dhani pouted, but he only got a grin in reply.

“Who are you to judge?”

“Goddammit.”

But it was only a few seconds later that the light on the other side of the bed was turned off and Dhani found himself wrapped into a warm, tight embrace. He fell asleep within minutes, the mystery interview completely banished from his mind.

The day of the interview came sooner than anticipated. The usual whirl that seemed to catch everyone before the holidays didn’t spare Dhani either, and before he could say “oh, I should have fuckin’ known it”, he found himself seated in a nice room at the Rolling Stones’ headquarters, right next to none other than Jakob Dylan.

Very much embarrassed at how he had allowed Jakob to fool him, he just buried his head in his hands and groaned theatrically. Jakob only looked at him and snorted.

“I never told you I wasn’t the mystery person!”

“You told me you wouldn’t be doing any more interviews this year??”

Jakob scratched his chin. “Okay, that’s fair. But I said that before I was asked to do this with you.” He grinned and didn’t falter even a tiny bit under Dhani’s dark gaze. He shrugged: “It’s not my fault, is it? And I have a feeling that this is gonna be fun, Dhanster.”

“Oh my god, please don’t call me that in public,” Dhani just breathed out in a hushed voice. “Seriously, Jake.”

Jakob nodded. “Alright. But in turn, you’re gonna try to relax now, okay?”

This was the moment that their interviewer chose to appear. He greeted them cheerfully and explained that Tony, who had done some interviews with each of them respectively over the years, wasn’t doing this interview because the whole editorial team had sent him on a much needed vacation.

“Guy doesn’t know when to take a break. He hadn’t taken a day off in three years,” Ryan explained to them. He sat down opposite of them and quickly looked through his note cards. When he looked back up, the cards in one hand, his phone ready to record in the other, he seemed to notice something that made him halt, however. Two shiny rings. He grinned.

“Huh, didn’t know you guys had gotten hitched.”

Dhani’s breath caught in his throat. Jakob noticed and placed a calming hand on his shoulder.

“Would you wanna talk more about your significant others today, or-“

“Maybe later.” Jakob gave him a smile and they began the interview, Ryan all too eager to hear whether the two of them were appropriately thrilled to have met again and be able to do this interview together. Dhani actually found himself relaxing after a while and had to suppress a laugh several times. Judging by the twinkle in Jakob’s eyes, he felt the same way about the interviewer’s excitement.

Sooner than anticipated, the interview was over and Ryan invited them to play a song together. This, too, had been hinted at in the enquiry letter they both had received last month, but Dhani hadn’t prioritized it as much as finding out who his interview partner was going to be. Now he wished he had.

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is always a favorite around this time of year?” Ryan suggested with a smirk. Dhani couldn’t suppress a snort and heard Jakob laughing next to him. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Jakob giving him a nod and turned around. Their hands brushed when he did and Jakob’s smile widened.

“You know that Christmas album my dad recorded?”

“How couldn’t I? You didn’t stop mentioning it that holiday season.”

“True.” Jakob grinned at the memory. And the holidays that year spent with his dad.

“Anyway, you remember his cover of Must Be Santa?”

“Oh my god.”

“Yes.”

Dhani gave him a searching glance, then gave in. He waved his hand at Jakob. “Gimme your phone, I need to listen to the song again to at least make an attempt to get it right.”

Jakob obeyed – all too happily, if he was being honest – and turned toward Ryan. “Can we get a couple of additional studio musicians to do this in, say, an hour?”

Ryan beamed like Jakob had just hung the moon. “Sure!” And, after showing them to one of the studios, off he was.

After Dhani was done listening to the song a couple of times, they started practicing with the studio guitars they had been provided with. It was fast-played chords and almost shouting the lyrics breathlessly into each other’s face as fast as they could from there on.

“This is insane,” Dhani said when they took a breather, but he was grinning, enjoying the silliness more than words could express.

“You know what kind of life you agreed to when-“

The door burst open and in came Ryan, a studio band they didn’t know, as well as two cameramen with their equipment.

It was a blast. That was the only way to put it. They made it through the song on their third or fourth take, but the second the cameras were off, Dhani collapsed into a fit of giggles and had to cling onto Jakob to steady himself.

“That was fun.”

His face was red and Jakob looked at him like he wanted to kiss him right then and there. Instead, he wrapped his arm around Dhani and pulled him up against his side. Dhani shuddered, but the smile didn’t leave his face.

“I should have hoped so.”

They thanked the studio band for the job well done as well as the fun that they had had, shook everyone’s hands and left to say goodbye to Ryan.

Jakob’s hand had long left Dhani’s shoulder and, after a tentative brush or two against his knuckles, was now firmly clasped in Dhani’s hand. They were smiling and their faces were still slightly red from singing the fast holiday song several times in a row when they left the room together.

It was their giddy and relaxed selves that ran into Ryan in the hallway. While they thanked him for the fun interview and jamming session, Ryan’s gaze wandered down to their joined hands and he smiled. Ah. He wouldn’t need to take Jakob up on his earlier offer to elaborate. He felt that he had gotten the right idea and wouldn’t ask – nor tell.

“You guys have a good evening, yeah?” He smiled at them and shook their respective free hand.

“Thanks, mate, you too,” Dhani smiled and looked at Jakob with a fond gaze. He gave a gentle tug on the other man’s hand and, after another smile and nod at Ryan, off they were.

Once they had put on their coats and were out of the building’s front door, he turned his head toward Jakob, only to find the other man already looking at him with a gentle smile on his lips.

“That was... a lot of fun, actually.”

Jakob grinned, just a tiny bit smugly. “You did choose your spouse wisely, after all.”

Dhani just gave him an amused look out of the corner of his eye. “You didn’t choose too badly, either, I’d say.”

It took them only two seconds before they were laughing once again. And just like that, despite the freezing evening temperature, Dhani was feeling all giddy and warm again. To think he had stressed so much about finding out who his interview partner would be until earlier today...

“C’mon.” A gentle tug on Dhani’s hand. “I think dad wouldn’t mind us dropping by. Wanna go?” Jakob grinned as Dhani just buried his face in the crook of his neck. And didn’t move away.

“Huh. Dhanster?” Jakob asked and lightly poked Dhani’s back with his gloved hand.

“Don’t wanna move right now. You’re comfy.” His words were barely audible, as his face was hidden in the fake fur of Jakob’s winter coat. His cold nose was pressed against Jakob’s throat though, and Jakob tried to shift away from it – but to no avail.

“Alright, then. Then I’ll carry you.”

“Nooo.”

“Don’t tell me you still have your so-called polka dot PTSD,” Jakob half-teased.

Dhani only groaned and Jakob laughed.

“We’ve been married for how many years now?”

Dhani finally pulled back from Jakob’s neck and made a face as though he was pondering the question seriously.

“Not long enough for me to get over the polka dots. Never long enough.”

Jakob snorted and shook his head. Taking hold of Dhani’s hand again, he squeezed it in encouragement.

“So- you coming?”

Dhani gave a plaintive sigh for the sake of drama (mostly) but smiled back at Jakob and, squeezing Jakob’s hand back, nodded.

“Always.”

46. Do you consider yourself a diverse author?

Hmm. Not really. I’d love to be more diverse in everything: genres/tropes, writing lots of different ships, ratio of ship fic to gen fic, writing more of a range of characters from lots of different backgrounds, and writing WAY more fandoms. As it is, I tend to obsess over a few things until I destroy them for myself forever (!) But maybe in a few years I’ll look back over a lot more of a fic back catalogue and I’ll see that I was writing about a more diverse range of characters/ships/fandoms long-term...? I can hope!

47. If someone you know in real life who isn’t involved in fandoms asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first?

I think I would probably try to figure what the person asking might enjoy in a story, and show them something they would like regardless of the fandom. E.g. someone neurodivergent might enjoy my ND-headcanon stories, even if they didn’t know the fandom... maybe... Whereas if I knew someone liked angsty stories I could definitely find them some things to read. (Rebuild. It’d definitely be ‘Rebuild.’) As to whether I would really let someone random see my writing... Maaaaybe. Depends how much I trust them and how open-minded I think they are. :D

48. Does anyone you know from outside of fandom know you write fanfic? Are they involved in the same fandom too?

A few non-fannish people know, but not many. Someone at work was chatting to me about hobbies and told me she created D&D characters, and it sounded oddly similar to fanfic so I told her about that, and now she’s always asking what I’m writing, which is very sweet! And my spouse knows, but see question below for how it went when they read one :D One friend of mine who’s a bit of an Arrowverse fan knows I write fanfic, but I’ve never shown him any. He writes Doctor Who fic though, so maybe I should do a fic swap with him sometime.

49. Has anyone in your life ever read your fanfic just because you wrote it?

The spouse, whose (verbatim) reaction was: “That was very well written. Never make me read anything like that ever again.” Oh, and there’s also a new friend I made recently online, through disability networks. She very rarely reads fanfic and doesn’t know the Arrowverse at all, but we were talking about writing and she asked to read a bit of mine. I thought through everything I know about her and said “you’ll like coldwestallen” and dumped a few one-shots on her. (She’s very sunny and happy - coldwave would have been a mistake, lol!) She liked the stories, btw. :)

I’ve been lowkey thinking about this Ask for months,because there aren’t that many dark!Scorbus fics out there, but the ones that I’veread have made an impression. There’s just something about the ship that lendsitself to fluff and all the good things. But to sate your curiosity, I’verounded up a few here and had great fun doing so. If any readers can rec fics that fulfill this Anon’s request, please feel free to link.

As always, checkthe author’s tags before reading. They’re there for a reason. Seriously, I AMNOT KIDDING. Here be squicks, horrors, MCD, you name it.

Dream and Delirium – Albus by @goaskalbus (12.4K) - When dreams fade into morning, the boy’s faceis featureless, other than his eyes. He is an insipid, pale smudge on mysubconscious.

This is part of unkissed’s Into the Heart of Darknessseries, in which each of the stories reference characters from NeilGaiman’s Sandman series. “Dream” and “Delirium” perfectly capture the gauzy atmosphereof lucid dreaming that pervades the fic. I read the tags and thought, there isno way this will end well. Albus and Scorpius’s story is beautiful, though, andI loved the way the author portrayed teenage sexuality. There is so much DESIREhere, and it becomes unfettered as it is refracted through the mirrors ofmental illness. At least the resolution let me breathe again. (BTW, the entireseries is nightmarish and hauntingly realized. Definitely not for everyone butworth checking out if you like dark!fic.)

Finding Scorpius by JosephineStone (48.1K) - Harry and Ginny’s marriage has been introuble since the beginning, but they had the kids to raise and careers to keepthem busy. Now the kids are all at school, except James who’s starting his owncareer, Harry is at a desk as the Head Auror and so is Ginny while working forthe Daily Prophet. They’reworking on problems they’ve been brushing aside for years, when ScorpiusMalfoy, their son Albus’ best mate, goes missing from Hogwarts. Harry is tornbetween finding Scorpius before it’s too late, and keeping his falling-apartfamily together.

This fic will always hold a special place in my heart, as it contributed to myfalling in love with HD. Scorbus is not the central pairing, but it is key tothe plot. I love this fic, but it has one of the worst endings (in terms ofheartbreak, not writing) I’ve encountered in a next gen fic. Also, it’s a BigBang fic, so there’s art!

His Father’s Son by Rickey (7.2K)- Scorpius Malfoy tries to find his own way in theworld.

This fic is “dark” and the central pairing is Scorbus, butit’s not dark!Scorbus, per se. But it is a very cleverwhat-the-fuck-just-happened kind of fic. Bit of a heart-breaker once the dusthas settled.

Irradianceby @bounding-heart /Brief_and_Dreamy(48.2K) - Al starts Hogwarts knowingexactly who he is and what he wants from life. When the things he takes forgranted fall away, he holds fast to the one truth that remains - he lovesScorpius and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep him safe.

One of my favorite dark!Scorbuslove stories. Love drives the two boysto desperation, for different reasons. SPOILER ALERT. It has probably the mosthopeful ending of all the fics on the list. (That’s not saying much.)

Mandrakes by Frayach (6.3K)- Albus has a deadly habit. What at firstfeels like heaven can end up feeling like hell.

First-person POV, non-linear, unreliable narrator. These canall be unpopular literary devices, but in Frayach’s deft hands, this devastating little fic works.

Idebated whether to include it at all but then decided to because fuck it, it’sa classic and one of my favorite works from an obscenely talented writer. EndgameDrarry.

Of ThisRitual Escape by @fuwafuwafic (4.8K) -When his teenaged son walks into the study and asks, Dad, what can you tell me about the DeathlyHallows?, it frightensHarry, and since dying, it takes a lot to frighten him.

Scorpius is, ah, not very nice. But driven. A little toodriven.

SameSame But Different by acroshabd (5.1K) - Scorpius prided himself on being hisfather’s son, until he realized what fathers did: they died and left behind alegacy too heavy to follow.

The Albus-James-Scorpius dynamiccomes up often in next gen fics, in various iterations of platonic good timesto the deepest perversions. This is a fic in the latter category. It is a story aboutlove, but it is not a love story.

Smotheredin Three by @ashiiblack (5.8K) - Albusand Scorpius’ relationship seems dysfunctional even from an outsider’sperspective. Just wait until you hear their side of the story.

Non-con mind fuckery. Exceptionalstory construction.

The Uncertainty of Light by celestineangel (6.3K) - As the circle comes around again, two peoplestruggle with the legacies of the previous generation, and with the lessons oftheir own.

Haunting narration and encroaching horror. Read it once, andthen read it again.

It took me a minute to realise you were referring to locketshipping aka tabloidshipping aka incesty Mokuba/Seto. For some reason, probably just wishful thinking, I thought at first maybe you meant battleshipping (Jou/Seto/Yuugi) or buddyshipping (Honda/Jou)...

I made the statements I did without really contextualising them within the context of the ygo fandom. It didn’t occur to me you were referring to a distaste for the fandom presence of certain ships or the way they’re presented. So... sorry I got kind of weird on you in the tags.

below the cut is tl;dr about controversial stuff and incest and sibling abuse

re: tags. I know people in fandom use the term ‘pedophilia’ as a catch all for... whatever they view as having the potential of including child sexual abuse. I personally think maintaining the distinction between pedophilic and ephebophilic attraction patterns (which people may or may not act on), and acts of child sexual abuse (for which attraction may or may not be a factor) is important. But really I knew what you meant when you said what you said, so I realised I was being pretty nitpicky. But also, even more generally, I think people should be free to write about controversial and potentially disturbing topics, so long as they realise what they’re doing and include proper tags/warning.

re: scandalship. Usually when I’m talking about incest ships I’m not talking about cousins. Not that cousin incest isn’t technically incest, but it’s allowed in most of the world today including some US states. And it doesn’t have the same kind of relational baggage as parent or sibling incest. The bigger part of what makes things incest in my mind is the person having been closely involved in the other person’s formative childhood development in capacity as a parent or sibling, and it almost without exception coincides with abuse. Malik/Rishid is an incest ship in my mind because Rishid was undoubtedly a brother to Malik during his upbringing. (Isis/Rishid is harder for me to make a call on because we see less of their relationship. It’s not clear whether they were raised together in an intimate proximity, or whether they really relate as siblings. So, depending on what headcanons you’re working with, I think both incestuous and non-incestuous interpretations of a romantic relationship between them could be valid.)

But, in terms of what you were talking about in your post here - I haven’t run into a lot of Mokuba/Seto personally - not enough to view it as some sort of fandom problem. But admittedly I haven’t gone looking for fics specifically featuring the two of them, so maybe that’s why. I know I’ve seen someone else also complain about the abundance of Mokuba/Seto in the search for gen fic, and I also had a similar experience pretty recently, so presumably it is a common fandom experience. I was searching through doujinshi on pixiv and opened something that I assumed to be Kaibros gen but was not. I had actually long since thought the internet has massively desensitised me to everything, but I actually shuddered irl. This isn’t to condemn the artist - admittedly I think everybody should label/tag things like that but I assume they did and I was the one that went around clicking links without taking the time to read the Japanese. But from a perspective of what I found disturbing was the kind of ease that you described in your post - that kind of moves between something I’d consider part of a very close and caring and acceptable sibling relationship, to something unacceptable that immediately undermines the validity of Seto and Mokuba hugging or sharing a bed in a nonsexual context, but also tries to capatalise on and continue off of the ‘cute’ vibes set up by what could have once been reasonably interpreted as a platonically intimate gesture, instead of a symptom of abuse.

(Yeah, for the record, I don’t think it’s abnormal for siblings to be physically affectionate to a degree. A lot of siblings aren’t as close as you and your brother, even siblings with more or less amiable relationships, but I agree it’s odd and unfair to assume that you guys can’t or shouldn’t be platonically affectionate. Otoh, though, I feel like it’s not always easy to spot a family resemblance, so I get how people may be confused. And also just wanna throw out there that sibling sexual abuse is more common than anybody wants to admit, and there’s a critical lack of attention towards the issue compared to rarer types of child sexual abuse, so it’s unfortunately possible that people are projecting their own unhealthy histories and dynamics onto you.)

But, hmm, there was another case I had where I ran into (appropriately warned for) Mokuba/Seto that I think handled the topic pretty delicately. It was about a Seto that had a plethora of sexual desires (including feelings for Mokuba) that he felt unequipped to find an outlet for - partly because of the ferocity with which he isolates himself and pushes away human contact. It was an unsettling story - but what made it palatable for me was the way both the narrative and Seto himself were keenly aware of how inappropriate acting on such desires would be. Seto’s guilt-ridden, convinced of his own monstrosity, and desperate to escape to VR (or wherever he can go to not deal with anything even remotely like an emotion). Seto immediately understands this attraction poses a threat and threatens to topple every way in which he’s tried to protect Mokuba. And Mokuba’s increasingly worried for his brother, and too naive to really understand exactly what the big deal is - even when Seto crosses the line and kisses him (and immediately pushes Mokuba away and runs off and curls up into a ball of self-loathing). And, when VR proves to be an insufficient method of escaping his own humanity, Mokuba finally convinces Seto to reach out to Yuugi, and Seto agrees because - even thought the last thing he wants to do is reach out to anyone - he cares more about remaining a good brother to Mokuba than maintaining the comfort of his own emotional isolation. So it becomes a reassertion of how much Seto values Mokuba as a brother and puts him first, rather than an expression of sexual violence.

I’m not saying this story is something for everyone (it’s not. it made me uncomfortable at times. and the solace that it was meant to make me uncomfortable was enough to soothe me, but I realise that’s not enough for everyone.) It also doesn’t blend with my personal headcanons, tbh, and it’s not something I would be interested in writing about with regards to Seto and Mokuba. But as a reader and letting the author take the reins, I enjoyed the fic, and I see the merit in it exploring the concepts it did. Far more than I see the merit in exploring Seto and Mokuba in the context of ‘aw, cute they’re hugging. now they’re kissing. uwu’ But, idk, I’m also not the arbitrator of what fiction has merit or isn’t too irredeemably creepy for anyone other than myself.

idk, like I said, I haven’t run into much Mokuba/Seto during my (mostly relatively recent) run of the fandom. Maybe it’s a bigger issue than I envisioned. And, well, I can’t stop people from creating fanart of Kaiba and Mokuba cuddling with whatever understanding they have of the circumstances behind the scene. But- yeah. I don’t support locket-/tabloid-/brother- shipping them in that manner. I’ve heard a lot of people just say ‘Kaibros’ to refer to Seto & Mokuba as a unit. But I don’t know if there’s a consensus on what people use as a tag for gen Seto & Mokuba things *shrugs*

(And, um, just more generally regarding the Kaiba brothers - I think they can be pretty unhealthily codependent, but no more than I’d expect two brothers having been through foster care and alone against the world to be. I don’t mean to undermine how important and loving and their relationship with one another has been, and how much it has been a saving grace for them.)

Anyhow, sorry for this upsetting tl;dr but- Thank you again! And, lol, yes! Keep me in mind for all things ettushipping related! And polarship and pupship and rivalship and battleship and 5000 other things tbh, lol.

I have a weak spot for Kageyama/Kenma/Kuroo, Kageyama/Asahi, Kageyama/Tanaka and Kageyama/Suga

I’m p sure everything I listed at 4 is a rarepair (except maybe Kageyama/Suga? Idk)

But honestly, I love p much every ship with Kageyama because the creators (be it fic, art, or posts) always sell it so well

6. What is/are your Haikyuu!! otp(s)?

Like I said, I ship pretty much everything if the creator makes a compelling argument for it

I’m in quite a lot of fandoms, ha. I’m currently most active in the Voltron and Yuri on Ice fandom. Getting into Kuroko no Basket, but I'm straying away from content until I finish watching go avoid spoilers

Drinks:

I love milkshakes, Gazeuze Champagne, chocolate milk, coke, and regular milk

16. Who of the Karasuno first years do you think should be captain and vice-captain once they’re third years?

Hmm, that’s a tough one. I haven’t really thought about it much… It really depends on how everyone develops? I mean, I can see all of them fitting the role if their growth goes a certain way, yknow?

Hinata’s awesome at motivation and pep-speeches, but would prolly struggle a bit with the technical aspect. And maybe I’m just dense, but I don’t think Hinata is all that good at reading people, so that would be a bit of an issue

Tsukishima would be great at the technical aspect, and while he would probably notice if his teammates were out of sort, he might struggle with addressing it because he’s p guarded, so not a big fan of emotional one-on-one’s.

Kageyama would be good at the technical aspect, but he might struggle with putting his observations into words. He might not necessarily be good at pep speeches, but his unwavering determination and confidence in his team would be p reassuring on its own.

He’d probably be vise, because as it is I think he might shy away from an outright leadership role out of fear of falling into old habits? It’d be reassuring to know there’s a captain to reel him in and sort things out if it goes off-rails.

Yamaguchi would be pretty good at the social aspect: pep speeches, motivation, and noticing if his teammates are going through stuff, and he would be good at talking it over with them. But as it his, his nerves probably would get in the way. It’s not much of a boost of confidence to see your captain freaking out before a match, I’d imagine

TL;DR

I have no clue. I can see the potential for it in all of them, so it rly depends on how their character growth goes

I have a bunch of them! My main one, tho, the one that doesn’t change no matter what context or AU I put him into is that he’s autistic.

Aaah, I’m awful at picking favorites, but I love the angsty ones, especially if it’s gen!

19. What nickname do you use for Kags?

I usually just spell it full out, but if I don’t I switch between Kags and Kage.

Eh, I can imagine there are people who aren’t wild about me headcanoning him as autistic…

I play the trumpet in a brassband, and I like photography and writing.

Soooo many things omg?

I like how he intense and excited he gets about the things he’s passionate about. I

like how he has next to no middle ground between throwing himself into something fully or just being completely disinterested. t’s so relatable

I like how he always strives to improve- both his volleyball skills and to move beyond his “King of the Court” past

I like his awkwardness

I like how interesting a character he is: that he seems like a permanently pissed off asshole even tho a lot of that is a combination of an unfortunate neutral expression and a tendency of being both completely honest- prolly often without realizing how harsh it comes off as- and his words coming out wrong.
