hi i'm too overwhelmed to watch rhys's murray cameo and i was wondering if you know of anyone who's posted a transcript somewhere? or if there's any chance maybe you would be open to telling us the best bits/highlights of the cameo? (thank you for your post about it with the fotc bloops video btw!!)
Oh hey! No problem, I’ll do my best.
So, Rhys is wearing a very cute Murray style ensemble for this one - beige shirt, Aotearoa themed tie, brown blazer.
He opens by calling ‘band meeting!’
First question is ‘where is Murray now?’
Answer - he’s been working hard, managing a band called Great Big Cow and getting them in to perform at the Troubadour in LA. The room sold out and the band played very well - a big achievement for Murray!
After that, he’s returned to New Zealand. He goes between NZ, LA and NY. FOTC was his heyday.
(I’ve written this next bit in full because I think it is excellent advice)
Life advice to note down: when you find yourself in a scenario you didn’t expect - don’t fret! Could be awkward, could be weird, you might be upset for some reason. Could be job you don’t want to do or could be some place you don’t want to be. But just think in the back of your mind - something good can come of this. The old silver lining.
Murray’s silver lining was that a couple of ‘cool-looking idiots’ turned up on his doorstep. They had a band that needed managing and Murray flourished in this new role!
They brought amazing comedy and music to the world, and there was a sense of sadness when it ended and they had to go back to NZ.
(Rhys gets briefly distracted by a plant in the background)
People related to Murray because he showed ‘fake it til you make it’, make use of any skills you have to level up - life is a ‘big theatrical escapade’, we have to put on a character everyday and pull something out of nothing to achieve in this world and Murray was the embodiment of that.
Murray is awkward, doesn’t quite fit in, but being like that you can still make it. Having a sense of humour is a big one, but you always have something unique about you.
Everyone has a sense of humour, some have a natural gift for it, but everyone has a certain set of skills to utilise.
(Then he talks himself out of giving advice - personally I love his advice and I always want to hear more but I think he started doubting himself here!)
Then he talks for a bit about improvisation in FOTC - a lot of it was improvised! They had so much fun.
Murray’s office particularly was always improvised - they had a goal to get to, a reason for the scene, but you could work anything into the scene. It was hard to stop each other from laughing!
Some highlights: arguing in front of the map, ‘I get ridiculed all the time’, ‘on your way to a dick meeting’, the dad guitar bit, ‘you’d have to be deaf to hear that’, ‘you could have a little bit of hay coming out of your mouth’ (🤣)
Rhys really enjoyed watching it back and he’s really proud of it.
Then he talks for a bit about band meetings and how Jemaine was always corpsing - he would be first to laugh and set Bret off. B&J would often have to leave the room and Murray would do the band meeting to two empty chairs because they were laughing too much.
Rhys would still hear them laughing down the corridor by the monitors so he’d call out ‘I can hear you! You’re gonna have to go back to your trailers!’
FOTC worked so well because of the connections they all had together as a cast and wanting each scene to be as funny as it could be.
You don’t want to rely too much on stuff you’ve written in a script, if you can do it (not everyone can) then improvising can be when you’re funniest. When Rhys gets a script he likes to do a run through where he adds his own stuff and people can see if they want to add in something different that he comes up with.
He then sings ‘Leggy Blonde’ as a thank you. He misses FOTC dearly and hopes they can get together again one day and do something.
(He includes all the parts of Leggy Blonde, including Jemaine’s rap, which had me in fits of laughter)
Wow that was long, I hope that my recap isn’t too overwhelming either! It was such a fun video and brought back so many memories of watching FOTC when I was a teen.

Voiceplay Visuals: We Don't Talk About Bruno
("You're gonna show/talk about That Moment, right?" Yes of course I will be showing/talking about That Moment; who do you take me for? 😝)
This video was uploaded on the 26th of February, 2022, it features Ashley Diane (in her second full-length collaboration with Voiceplay), and it is of course a cover of the ridiculously-popular song We Don't Talk About Bruno, from the very-popular Disney movie Encanto (which I have seen 2 or 3 times, including in cinemas, but I'm also very familiar with the movie soundtrack, because it's amazing). To cover such a popular song (let alone acapella-style) can be a challenging task, because obviously there'll be a lot of people who'll already know the original song quite well and who will be prepared to make comparisons, but this is Voiceplay we're talking about! They're not called "the theatre kids of acapella" for nothing, and Disney covers is one of the things they do best (and the video currently sits at a very impressive 5.6 million views on Youtube! (EDIT: as of the 13th of March, it's now 5.7 million!))
So of course I have a lot to talk about with this one, so let's get into it!
Layne was in charge of the video, arrangement, and direction for this one, and he and Tony worked together on set design and costuming. Needless to say, Layne and Tony did an amazing job (and yes, this was of course filmed at Pattycake Productions Studio, which Layne and Tony own and run together)
As for the costuming/characters: Cesar is playing Felix (is it perfect casting, or is Cesar just amazing at slipping into basically any role he's given? You decide), Ashley plays triple roles of Pepa, Isabela, and Mirabel, Eli is maybe Agustin (Agustin doesn't have a lead singing part in the song but the outfit is close enough), Layne is Dolores, and Geoff is either Camilo, Bruno, or both (Camilo pretending to be Bruno perhaps, like in the original scene in the movie?)
If we don't count Jingle Bell Rock (where Eli was wearing glasses while dressed as "Sandy Claws", then I'm fairly certain this is the last/most recent time that Eli has actually worn glasses for a Voiceplay video? And perhaps the only time he's worn them since growing out his facial hair.
Also I'm pretty sure I heard from someone that Geoff's "ruana" (google it) is in fact just a regular blanket/piece of fabric draped (possibly secured/pinned) over his shoulders (it's kind of a Look though ngl)
Not even 30 seconds in and I already stumbled upon a way-funnier-than-expected screencap 🤣

Basically, Cesar 100% understood the assignment as Felix, totally hammed it up, and it's highly entertaining 😁
(Also I swear Geoff did a very miniscule eyeroll here? Amazing, love him)

I know I'm not meant to be talking about vocals in these posts (per my own rules), but I have to give a big shoutout to Layne, who freaking killed it with Dolores's solo part, and it's always so lovely to hear him actually getting a vocal part in a song, as amazing as he is at vocal percussion 💜
Cesar continuing to do The Most (affectionate), and also it's kinda sweet how Geoff is looking at Layne here imo <3 (and also it kinda fits with how the characters they're playing, Camilo (probably) and Dolores are siblings!)
"Grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand." "Do you understand?"
(If you're rewatching a Voiceplay video, try shifting your focus to someone other than whoever you typically focus on for a certain part of the song! It will probably be worth it!)
Trust Geoff to get a dark/spooky section of the song! Voiceplay is nothing if not consistent 😝 (well, sometimes, in regards to some things 😂)
"When he calls your name, it all-" "-fades to black"
I was trying to get a good screencap of Cesar and Ashley on the "we! don't! talk about Bruno!" line, but eh, couldn't get a decent one.
(Oh btw obligatory kudos to Eli for lighting design!)
"He told me my fish would die, the next day, DEAD!"
(Great face, Ashley 😂👌)
Also pay attention to Geoff during this line (before it cuts to a closeup of Ashley) - I love his little shoulder shimmy to the more-uptempo beat!)

(Rip Eli, but there was no way anybody else was singing that line - it was practically made for him! 😆) (Also love Ashley touching his head in comfort/sympathy 😄)

(Yes yes of course Ashley is very pretty and I love the petals and the slow-mo on her, now CUE!)
"He told me that my power would grow, like the grapes that thrive on the viiiine"
Yep, that still continues to be up there as one of the most bonkers-ridiculous moments in a Voiceplay video ever. 🤣 (Also if it weren't hilarious enough, check out Ashley's Offended(tm) face in the first and second pictures above, and Layne's Extremely Concerned face in the second picture! ("uhh, Geoff. something you wanna tell me, dude?"))
I'm a little fuzzy on specifics, but apparently the idea for this moment came about when Voiceplay was acquiring clothing for everyone, and Ashley's outfit arrived in two different sizes (just in case one might fit better than the other). Turns out one of the copies of the outfit was a perfect fit for Geoff, and one thing led to another, and we ended up with Aspiring Disney Princess Geoff that you see in the images above 😄😋)
(When I said "don't just get you a man who can do both, get yourself a man that can do everything" back in my Frozen 2 Medley post, I meant it!!!)
(Oh and this section really was slowed down in post-production in order to make the petals (and hair flips!) look nice, and so both Ashley and Geoff were having to sing/lip-sync to sped up versions of their vocal lines!)

I somehow didn't pick up on this till a commenter pointed it out, but Layne copies Geoff's "spooky finger wiggles" movement! It's got Younger Sibling vibes ngl (though Dolores is actually older than Camillo iirc, and I'm an only child anyway so idk)
Ashley and Cesar were both great in this video, really seemed to play off each other quite a bit!
Man, what a video. Amazing to watch, and also a really great to watch other people react to, for multiple reasons! 😁
There's not much for me to say that I haven't already said about Voiceplay before, but I will say that if you liked this one, go watch their Mini for Surface Pressure if you haven't already! It was filmed during the same shoot as this one (same set, same clothes), and uploaded a few days prior. It's only a short video, sure, but it's still very much worth a watch.

there’s this weird, but strangely appealing 🤣🤣 man who’s like late 50’s or maybe 60 idk, maybe he’s 40 something with grey hair already i d k. he is so weird. i hated him at first fr, like we did not start off very great 💀 he’s a customer at the liquor store and idk if he was tryin to be funny when i met him or if he was bein an asshole, but he made me fucking mad so 🤣🤣 i hated him. then i learned he’s a fucking regular, literally like the first person every morning a little after we open. so i decided eventually that if he’s gonna be there at the start of my mornings every day of my life I’m gonna have to figure out how to get along with him some how lmao things eventually got less awkward *I didn’t go off on him or anything btw when he made me mad but I definitely was not social with him for awhile after that when he would come and he didn’t try to talk to me either besides the basic “have a good day” and us being polite to each other 🤣🤣* but i asked him what his job was the other day and this fuckin guy said an adult film actor” or something and I just was like ???? “oh ok, wouldn’t of thought that” like idfk I knew he was lying 🤣🤣 and he was like “old guys like me, well guys my age, still do stuff like that” and I was just lookin at him like ????????? and i asked him what his real job was and he’s a contractor. i just didn’t understand why he would say that bc I didn’t even think it was funny that was a weird thing to say 💀💀 but then today he was late and that’s what I said when he came in 🤣🤣 and he said something about “daddy has to” something and I was just like confusion bc i all i heard was daddy and i wanted escape but i had to stay LMAO BC IM CONFUSHION IS THE ONLY REASON I CANT WITH HIM. like if he’s tryin to entice me or something he’s doing a terrible fucking job 🤣🤣🤣😵💫😵💫 he’s so weird and even my friend who quit :( said she can’t figure him out. like he really called himself daddy with his whole chest and i was in shock 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 buffering for like a whole minute almost

Ive been thru so much these past months 🥺 but I’m in a better place. Taking care of myself. Lost weight. More active. Thankful for my corgi he’s been my motivation to get up and get going to take him on walks. I’m doing the best I can everyday for me and my kids. I’m glad I bought myself a ring a few months back more like a push present to myself 🙄 Reminder to myself that I’m a queen and someday someone will be lucky to be with me 🤣but for now taking it day by day. Almost the end of the year! I’m a sucker for romantic movies just because it didn’t work out for me doesn’t mean I hate love. I love the idea of being in love and I do love many things. Romantic songs are the best too ahahah Note to self your an amazing mom doing everything you can and have been doing an amazing job besides all the struggles thankful everyday for the smallest things and treating myself like the queen that I am and my body might not be perfect but I birthed 2 amazing lil humans and got to love my body everyday❤️🔥 I don’t quite have time to do much just work work and take care of the kids but reminding myself that the best thing is im not missing any special moments that they go thru someday they will grow and live there life and instead of wishing I was there I can say I was there. Hi btw everyone on tumblr ✌️☺️

Since you obsessively read my posts despite hating my blog, you should have a list of everything I love about him, but you don't because you only read what is convenient to you so you can project your judgements of Jensen unto me. 🤣

His eyes are incredibly expressive
When he takes time to do inner work, he can be a very powerful actor.

When he wants to, he can be an inspiring rolemodel and could be a poweful leader, too bad he doesn't step into that

Whew! That's a loaded question Anon lol. I feel like I've already kind of shared my opinion about them on here quite a few times. I'm gonna try to get my thoughts together... Cuz it's a lot to say....
Okay, so first of all... I thought they were a real deal couple at first... But based on some of the things I've been seeing lately, Idk.... Something about them seems a bit contrived and smthg seems off about their rlship. 👀 (Don't hate me! Just being honest)
I'm not really a fan of the age difference (mainly with her being 21...if she were 25 I wouldn't care), but it's whatever at this point. 🙄
I think people tend to forget that Pete Davidson was dating Kaia when she was 17 (UNDERAGE mind you) and he was 26. Nobody seemed to blink an eyelash. Cara Delavigne (sp?) also seemed to be having something going on with Kaia when Kaia was 18 and Cara was about 10 years older than her too. So, like I said, Kaia isn't new to this. But for some reason, with Austin, everyone is crying bloody murder lol.
Either way, I've always been saying that no matter WHO Austin dates next, I just hope she's older than 21. 😒🙄 Cuz THAT is not a good look. I don't even know how they got together. Could have been a setup for all I know. I'm just meh about them tbh. They're a boring couple to me. She's boring I'm sorry lol. 😅
Like I've said before, I've never really taken them all that seriously (maybe some shippers/fans do, but I don't), so maybe that's why I just don't really have much of a strong reaction to them. To me, they just seem like any other couple in Hollywood that dates for a while, and then will more than likely eventually break up lol. 🤷🏾♀️
Btw, the lady in that link you sent had a couple of things wrong (Vaustin Aunessa dated for about 8 years.... Austin was 30, not 31, etc), but I got the main gist of the video. And there are tons of videos out there like this, sooo we definitely get the point.
The dating of Kaia aside, I honestly just think (and this is just my honest personal opinion) that a lot of people want to hate on Austin.. 😅🤣
For some reason, the internet has a huge hate boner for this guy, and I just don't get it lol. I just assume he's the internet's perpetual whipping boy at this moment in time, and people just wanna drag him just because it's the "in" thing to do. First it was the Vanessa breakup thing, then it was the Kaia thing, then it was the voice thing, then it's they think he's annoying....Some call him pretentious...or arrogant, etc...
But then, I look at his interviews present AND past, and I'm like: "Are we talking about the same person??" 🥴
Even if you think that someone is annoying, is that any reason to hate someone you don't even know with such a passion lol? 🤔 Idk it just seems a little weird to me. Almost like it's forced or something.
I almost feel like people have put a certain personality on him that's not even him lol. 😅 Every single thing I've seen of Austin (past or present) he has always seemed to be very nice, respectful, down to earth, kind, humble, maybe a little socially awkward/shy, etc. But NONE of the things people on twitter/online describe him as. So I'm always left very baffled lol.
I could see if he were a trouble-maker, an abuser, or talking badly about people, or was engaged in some scandalous things over the years, but the dude literally is just a quiet person who basically works, does his job, and minds his business. 👀
So, he just might have to grow out of this "hate phase" in his career right now. I keep saying on my blog that just about EVERY actor has had a "hate" phase lol.... and it will continue to happen, because people are just weirdos and hateful for no good reason online. 🙄
But these phases don't usually last forever. It will eventually go away one of these days.

The long awaited chapter turned out to be so intense!!
But first.... can we appreciate Endo and his love for details???
This opening panel. Oh my gawd....
That details..... 🥰🥰🥰🥰 we can see where Yor and co was, and where the rest of the crowd were.
Anyway.....
This past month had make me so anxious. So glad to see Yor is still alright by the end of the match. And that McMahon is still alive too!!
But but.... so is Sniff Job and I was quite surprised to see Evil Frankie being so evil!! He really didn't care of the live of innocent people, as long as he got the most advantage out of it.
"The assassins failed?? Fine... I'll do it myself!"

And despite only ever see it in Yor's mind, Anya knew immediately that the knive is Yor's. Amazing
On the side note, I am so glad Endo spared Anya from witnessing the slaughter, and by extension, saving her from being a collateral damage from the assassins war, by her not finding a stair to go straight to her Ma's location. (She's still a kid!!)
Instead, Endo showed us how much Anya's throwing technique has grown!!
I am so proud of her!!!
From being unable to take a good aim with a mere ball, to being able to throw heavy pointed object to the higher ground???
Again... she was not yet 6 year old!!!
Amazing!!
Then, we see Loid in his element. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing a goofy more laidback Loid, but when he switched into his Twilight mode, we're once again be reminded why he was one to be called "the best".
So observant (he knew which one is the SSS officers, can read lips talk, changed into disguises and found the bomb location via mere observation), calculative (knew which route/action to take), and has skills far greater than those SSS officers in defusing the bomb, while at the same time analyzing the situations.
He was not blind by the fact that Westalians were not that innocents. There are bad people in his country too. But at the same time, he acted like a great spy and soldier, and trust his agency wholeheartly. (Will he ever be bertrayed by WISE? Because for sure WISE was not 100% good either. It's the nature of politics).
I hope his experiences and observation skills are enough to make him realized the second bomb whereabout. I mean, he seemed like he was thinking of something here.
Then, last but not least, Yor's fight! She had been so awesome in parring with the swordsman while having no weapon at all
(so I guess Yor only bring 3 of her knives in each job, eh? She lost one when she tried to counter attack the sniper, one was broken by the tough fat guy with a mace, and one was thrown at the lower deck which then returned by Anya)
I love how Endo draw the intensity in Yor's fight.
And I love love loooooveeee how Endo draws her back!! OmG!! 🥰🥰🥰 I never see a mangaka draw female chara's back so muscled and powerful and tough!! (With my limited knowledge of manga obviously, but I mean... look at this!)
Her muscles were so tense! It was so much different than her bare back usually drawn when she was at the Forger house, or when she went to do her routine activities (her shoulders were usually a bit slumped)
This kind of back pose was usually drawn for male warrior chara, to give a sense of "security" and "awe" to the reader (Like Zoro from One Piece, from example. I always adore his bare back btw.)
This just emhpasized that during her job, Yor IS a warrior. Used to "killed or to be killed" kind of situation, just like McMahon has said.
Endo even give her this classic warrior duel scene
Too bad the swordsman have to succumb to Yor's suppremacy. I was hoping to see him alive at least. So honorable. Even till the end.
I can't thank you Endo enough for feeding my simp towards the Queen. Guuhh..... Yor supremacy!!! 🛐🛐🛐🛐🛐
Still, I finally can sighed in relieve with Anya, when I saw that Yor's fight was finally over
Poor Yor, she was so tired.
But has the fight really end?? Can 2 bullet really finished Sniff Job off???

And what about the second bomb???
The arc is not over yet!!! Endo always managed to throw more curve ball, everytime I thought that we already enter the closure of the arc. Ohooohh!!

Sariel who is really worried about MC for running with Clavis
MC and Cyril who go around the city to spend money of the second richest prince in Rhodolite *cough*
Dress party for MC with with slits to show off her legs and Clavis just dodged with "I'm a leg man, not a chest man" lol
Clavis showing his weak side to MC before the day of rebellion arrives and MC cheers him on then Clavis put his head on her shoulder aww~🤧
Mc who had to part with Clavis because Clavis had to fulfill his agreement with Gilbert to live in Obsidian (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥｀)
Mc who argues with Chevalier so he doesn't kill Clavis
To put in simple "I will choose you to be the king as long as Clavis is by your side."
I think now MC can threaten others lol . Good job, girl 👏
Chevalier who recognizes his brother and admitting that because of Clavis by his side, he always succeeds and maintains his humanity 🤧 They do have strange relationship, but MC seeing their bond is stronger than others
Btw, I also want to say that here, even though Chevalier isn't paired with MC, he's quite open with her
Chevalier and Gilbert meeting (and don't forget the sparks between their clashing eyes 😂)

Flashback about his mother, Letizia, the late queen and the king
I really love when Letizia say she really loves Clavis. She said she was very happy with the days she spent with her son. She also said that she was so thankful that Clavis was born for her. But what sad & hurts more, the next day Letizia was found dead, committing suicide by jumping into cliff 😭
If things weren't like this, maybe Letizia will be the only mother of the princes who was still alive (╥﹏╥)
And moment between Chevalier and Clavis on the day of his mother's funeral. Chevalier was by Clavis's side, taking his brother's anger and beatings. He encouraging Clavis (despite his words far from kindness) and reminded Letizia's last message to him

hello, hello! i hope you’re all doing well! i’m really sorry for the delayed post this month - i went to norway over the may bank holiday weekend and didn’t have time to write this post preemptively last week. for those of you who celebrate, i hope you had a great european labour day!

WHAT I’M READING:
books:
i finished none of this is serious by catherine prasifka (who, btw, happens to be sally rooney’s sister in law) and very much enjoyed it. i wouldn’t say it’s a 5-star read, but definitely a 4-star one - i finished it in two days and was very hooked! the story is set in dublin and is a cross between three rooms, sally rooney’s general millennial figuring-your-shit-out-in-a-crumbling-world vibes, and metaphorical fantasy? i know it sounds weird, but it really works. the main plot follows sophie, a recent graduate trying to find her way between applying to jobs, evolving friendships, awkward situationships, etc., but also features a mysterious purple crack that randomly appears in the sky and is the subject of much anguish and speculation. the writing style is that crisp, quick, present tense shit that is now a bit cliché but that i will always eat right up regardless, so it really worked for me. however, what i found really interesting and unusual in the book was that the main character never actually speaks. she texts on her phone, has a rich internal monologue, but every conversation she has, you only really get the other person’s spoken quote, never hers. she explains what she thinks, and sometimes mentions what she doesn’t say, but while you know that she does respond something (i.e. she’s not mute), you never actually know what she says. the book obviously wants this to be a reflection on the “noise” that exists around us at the moment (social media, friends, etc) versus the relative “silence” of its main character. it’s like there’s so much being said around her, a constant, neverending buzz, but she never quite knows how to make herself heard/understood within that noise. i found this very clever and effective. generally, i think this book has a lot of embedded metaphors in its characters and situations, some that i really enjoyed (like sophie’s silence), and some that fell a bit more flat for me (like the crack in the sky - a metaphor of the news cycle? capitalism? the pandemic? - or sophie’s twin sister, hannah, who felt so one-dimensional i sometimes wondered if she was real or meant as a figment of sophie’s imagination and hatred of everything she isn’t but feels she should be?). but overall, i really related to sophie’s constant struggles with the split between her “online” life and irl. the book also really succeeds in portraying the difficult space of time between uni and work, where you’re done with uni but in the working world, no one wants you because you don’t have “experience.” all you want is to find a job, any job, to get some sort of validation/stability, and you don’t know what you have to do to achieve it. i really related to that and really recognised myself from a few years ago in the authors’ descriptions. lastly, i also really enjoyed grace, sophie’s best friend, to whom i really related to - it’s always interesting to get an outside perspective on what might be people’s perception of us, even though it’s not always flattering 🤣.
additionally, i am still reading 1984 on my kindle, i’m about 33% in. for now, i have to say, the book isn’t really grabbing my attention. i mean, i know it’s a classic and i do find it very interesting to see all of the “origins” of today’s dystopian novels in this story (and the style is definitely very modern) but i just - idk. i find myself skipping a lot of paragraphs of worldbuilding and description that seem a bit unnecessarily detailed. i suppose that at the time, the concept of the novel was new enough that everything needed to be explained but now, we’ve all read so much dystopia (especially in ya) that i feel like a lot of the intricacies of the world, i would already have assumed. so, idk. it’s definitely a good book and in my journey exploring “modern” classics, i’m enjoying this much more than i did to kill a mockingbird but still, i keep picking it up, reading a handful of pages, and finding my thoughts drifting as i keep reading.

WHAT I’M WATCHING:
peaky is over. thank god we know there will be a film in a couple of years cause otherwise i’d be utterly devastated. like most people, while my feelings towards this series were mixed (i think i’ll have more of a definite opinion upon rewatch), i really, really loved the finale. i think it was everything we could hope for, especially considering helen mccrory’s passing and the upheaval it obviously caused. i think you could probably write a thesis about the question of whether tommy really was ‘redeemed’ by the end but regardless, i truly loved this. peaky blinders is and will always be the show of my 20s and one of the most brilliant tv series ever made and i think that overall, the finale 100% lived up to expectations.
in other news, i’ve also watched the abercrombie doc yesterday, which was such a strange and fascinating trip down memory lane, and i just sat with my thoughts for a good while afterwards. i think:
one of the things that really struck me in mike jeffries’ attitude towards his critics is how much this marketing technique reminded me of ryanair. if you’re not familiar/not from europe, ryanair is an irish low-cost flight company that operates exclusively in europe and is very well-known for providing the Worst Possible Service to its customers, at the lowest cost possible. the planes fly, sure, and you will get there (interestingly, they’ve actually never had a major crash), but the workers are paid absolute peanuts and are employed under ridiculous irish contracts, regardless of where they are based in europe. the working conditions are terrible, the company makes you pay for literally everything, and the ceo openly claims to have considered things like: making people travel standing to save costs, or even making customers pay to use the bathrooms. these are very different companies, obviously, and ryanair has never had any discriminatory behaviours that we know of (if anything, they are known to hire more southern/eastern european staff to be able to pay them shittier salaries as the standard of living is lower in these countries) but i think there’s a very similar vein of: ‘yeah, i’m an arsehole, so what?’ brand image. it really came through in that interview where mike jeffries was like ‘yeah, we are exclusionary, that is our brand model.’ idk if it’s a ‘all press is good press’ ethos, or something else, but the attitude really reminded me of ryanair’s marketing.
on a broader spectrum, while there is obviously an issue when you apply those conditions to staffing (i.e. don’t hire poc-s, etc.), fundamentally, sure, you can choose to only market to a small, fit, white section of the population, but that’ll make you look like a complete arsehole. and, i found it interesting how the brand image, because it was so outright exclusionary, went from ‘cool’ to ‘uncool’ as we, as a society, evolved as well. there was actually a really good quote from one of the women who were interviewed which summed it up excellently: ‘A&F’s aura went away precisely because exclusion was the root of their success, and exclusion itself stopped being quite so cool.’ it’s such a true statement and it made me so grateful that we, as society, have evolved in the right direction in the past 20 years. when you remember what the 90s/00s were like, it’s really nice to see how far we’ve come (even if obviously, we’re far from perfect these days).
lastly, on an even broader point, it struck me how the rise and fall of abercrombie correlated, over the same period of time, with the rise and fall of the marketing of the american ‘image’ in europe. i think that anyone who was a kid/teenager in the 00s in europe probably remembers how ‘cool’ the people who wore A&F/Hollister in school were, not only because of the brand image itself, but also because that meant they had been to america! i remember that even having an american distant cousin sort of gave me street cred 🤣. whenever i visited them, i would not only bringing all those ‘cool’ brands from the us back for me, but also for my friends! those stores didn’t exist in europe and having american clothing was so ‘cool’ and trendy, because it also demonstrated that you were ‘cool’ and had been to cool places like new york or boston, or la. honestly, i cannot overstate how cool america was back then. they had all this stuff we didn’t have, all these films and tv shows, everyone i knew wanted to live there. i remember two of my friends got into a fight because friend A had gone to new york on holiday and the next year friend B did, and friend A accused B of ‘copying’ her for attention. it was madness. and now, no one i know wants to live in the us, bar from a girl in work, but she always justifies it by like ‘i know it’s bad but my boyfriend is american so we’ll have to live there eventually.’ and i don’t really know where this fall in status came from. is it the war in iraq, or the fact that we all got access to social media and realised america is So Bad in terms of healthcare, racism, etc. or just the living conditions deteriorating there? idk but it really happened throughout the 00s and early 10s, exactly at the same time as A&F’s rise and fall. and, don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of issues with europe, but i think it’s interesting that both A&F and america in general ceased to be aspirational at the same time.

there aren’t really any podcasts that i truly remember from this month but i’ve very much been enjoying the irish times’ women’s podcast, which has just fed my usual annoyance at the patriarchy 🤣.

WHAT I’M WRITING:
as i’ve mentioned on here the past few weeks, my main focus this past month has been castles. i was hoping i would be able to post by this weekend but that has sort of fallen off track. i’ve been fighting seasonal allergies and been extremely tired due to my company returning to the office; i feel like commuting has taken up even more of my writing time. as i said on here, i’ve been feeling very guilty over my lack of updates lately and feel like i need to cut myself some slack. it’s just so hard comparing my 90k output from sep 2020 to may 2021 (when i wasn’t working) to the barely three chapters i’ve produced since then. it’s even more frustrating because when i do get time to focus on castles and actually write it, i love doing so So Much, but it just takes a lot of time and focus and finding time to do that whilst working full time is just So Damn Hard.
so like, idk. what i can promise you is that i am working on it. i have about 15k of a first draft at the moment, and i’m working on the rest/polishing it. as i said here, all i know is that once i do manage to get this done the way i want, there will probably be loads of content coming your way at once. so, i suppose, at least there’s that, haha.

WHAT I’M DOING:
you may not have noticed this because i sort of cleverly queued up some posts lately, but i’ve been taking a sort of social media break. i say “sort of” cause it’s not been a hard cut or anything, but i just deleted discord and tumblr off my phone and honestly, i think it was for the best. my screen time was getting absolutely ridiculous and i was having a very hard time focusing on things (writing included) - honestly, being constantly on my phone just wasn’t much fun anymore. i probably will reinstall tumblr eventually but i think, for the most part, i’m going to stay off discord (or at least, off the regular “chats”), just concentrating on fanfic conversations, etc. you might or might have seen it (not linking anything here cause i don’t want to restart the debate, and it’s not my point), but i had a disagreement with a discord that was created recently, restricting membership to a particular age group. and, it got me thinking a lot about the way we’ve now “restricted” fandoms to “exclusive” discord servers, that so few people can access, especially when they are invite-only. there’s gazillions of hp discord servers at the moment, each centred into their own little silo, and while i completely understand people who think differently, i’m not sure that’s what i want for myself.
i think we’re kind of congregating with fans that not only have the same general interests as we do, but also are of the same demographic, same countries, same fandom niche, etc. it’s becoming more and more niche to the point that disagreement and debate is practically nonexistent. and, don’t get me wrong, i’ve 100% participated in that myself, and i’ve found amazing communities and met amazing people along the way, but i generally have been finding that we are all a bit guilty (again, myself very much included) of finding our own safe echo chambers, both in fandom and otherwise, to the point that interacting with the “outside” and people who think differently becomes harder and harder to tolerate. like, yeah, there are a lot of stupid kids on tumblr, and a lot of arseholes, but i think we actually need those to live healthily in society. and again, it’s not a diss to anyone who does seek those “safe” secluded spaces, i’ve sought them myself in the past, but i don’t think they’re actually good for my mental health and the person that i am. as proven by the fact that i needed a social media break from it all, lmao 🤣🤣.
so anyway, i’m still on discord, and i might still interact here and there, and will defo get back on tumblr, but i think i’m better when i’m on the sidelines on this one, ahah.
