I heard that sharks and rays are super closely related. Are skates an approximate bridging “group” between them? Or are they outside of both groups
They are all really closely related- there in all the same class known as Chondrichthyes, or cartilaginous fish. Sharks evolved first, approximately 350 million years ago during the Carboniferous period. Skates and ray came around at approximately the same time as each other 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period.
So skates aren't really a "bridging group", they're actually most closely related to rays!

I was hired by Todd Aldrington to make the cover for his newest novel, A Christmas Reunion! :D Todd writes, "A Christmas Reunion is about the two guys who secretly become boyfriends when their families get together at Christmas, and they spend the whole holiday trying to hide it from their suspicious families." From what I know, this book is supposed to have a comedic lean to it compared to his previous books. :3
If you're interested in buying the book (either for yourself or as a gift), here are links to the ebook and paperback versions!

A papercraft commission to celebrate the client's return to figure skating! The shape in the background is a rendition of their old rink; I thought the white-on-white look would both form a nice contrast with the black skates, and also (since the background white paper is slightly shimmery) evoke the look of white skating lines left on the ice. ⛸️
