Fish and Seafood: Cod, tuna, scrod, anchovies, mackerel, flounder, catfish, trout, mahi-mahi, halibut, sole, sardines, salmon, halibut, snapper, and calamari. Always opt for wild caught fish to avoid toxins present in commercially reared fish.
Grass-fed Meat: These include beef, venison, goat, and lamb. Meat from wild animals are also acceptable; however, avoid sausages and meats that come with sugary sauces and those covered in breadcrumbs. Choose the chunks of meat with more fat since they contain less protein and more fat.
 Pork: Boston butt, pork chops, ham pork, and loin. When choosing ham, be on the lookout for added sugar. 
Bacon and Sausages: Preferably, you should buy these at specialty health food stores. If this is not possible, always read the labels to avoid those which contain fillers such as soy or sugars.
Canned Tuna and Salmon: Canned tuna and salmon are okay to consume while you are on the keto diet. However, avoid seafood rich in fillers, breaded seafood, and fried seafood. 
Vegetable Protein Powders: Protein supplements such as whey protein, hemp protein, pea, and rice are acceptable. 
Whole Eggs: This includes chicken eggs, and quail eggs which you can prepare through any mean desired; fried, soft or hard boiled, deviled, scrambled, or omelet style.

2. Fats and Oils
Because these are your main sources of energy while you are on this diet, go for the types of fats and oils you enjoy. These may include:
* Omega 3 fatty acids from fish such as tuna, shellfish, and salmon
* Fish supplements or krill
* Monounsaturated fats such as egg yolks, avocado, and butter
* Vegetable oils such as olive oil, coconut oil
* Non-hydrogenated beef tallow, ghee, and lard.
* Duck and chicken fat
In order to make it easier to stick to this diet, be aware of which types of fat your body can tolerate. Many people seem to have zero or very low tolerance of vegetable oils and mayo. This may be a good thing because most of these oils are rich in omega 6 fatty acids - the kind that is bad for your body’s cholesterol levels.
In this case, work with the listed monounsaturated fats to reduce the inflammatory effect brought about by polyunsaturated fats. Nevertheless, work to balance both fats because you cannot survive on monounsaturated fats alone (You need a lot of fats and oils). Even then, avoid hydrogenated fats such as margarine to reduce the amount of trans-fats you eat.

For these foods, opt for organic ones or better yet, grow your own to avoid all pesticide toxins. Avoid starchy vegetables (corn, sweet potatoes, potatoes, peas, and winter squash) that are high in carbs. It takes 48 hours to get into ketosis. To get there, you must correctly adapt the keto diet. Below are tips that should help you do just that and get your body into ketosis faster:
Tip 1: To get into ketosis faster, eat less than 20g of carbs a day. 
Tip 2: Drink water, about 100 ounces per day. Drink more to lose more.

Tip 4: Do not panic. Be aware of the keto flu coming your way. I would totally be that ‘person’ to go camping in an RV or at some special Hotel/Resort honestly LOL OR, I heard people do some early winter camping, when all the bugs are dead so if anything, I’d prob do that.

I like a balance of healthy/not so healthy foods. So long as I eat healthy 75-80 percent of the time, I can have my dessert, wines, and other yummy stuff. Btw, here are pics of some of the healthy stuff I made.

While the website is unfortunately rather outdated in terms of information and aesthetic, Northside Shack is a fantastic customizable acai bowl establishment that also offers a wide variety of smoothies. It is a great place to get a boost of energy for the day through some super fresh fruit. Pictured below is an acai/pitaya bowl I couldn't have devoured faster if I tried.

Shank & Bone has amazing Vietnamese food including bun bowls, pho, and some fun fusion items. You can’t go wrong with anything, but I would recommend the grilled shrimp bun bowl because their grilled shrimp is off-the-charts delicious. I also think they have some of the best pho broth I have ever had, and that's definitely saying something given the breadth of my foodie journey. Pictured below is their amazing Saigon chicken wings.

Nutrition: Exploring Food Sensitivity
Overview
I’ll just start by saying that I’m not a nutritionist, however, the experience that I will share will have takeaways that you can hopefully use to keep your body feeling good.
Back in May, I visited a doctor who ran a quick food sensitivity (food-allergy) check on me. A friend of mine had recently retooled his fridge by removing certain foods from his diet that he had sensitivities to, per the check, and noticed a drop in weight (as a result of reduced inflammation), stable digestion, and an increase in general well-being and energy. I didn’t seek this check, however, I was curious based on his feedback and was presented with the opportunity, so despite not having any glaring issues, I went down the rabbit hole.
Initial Evaluation
After about 5 minutes, the doctor had given me a laundry list of foods to avoid because I may have sensitivities. Now, again, my body didn’t present any glaring issues and at the time I subjectively reported feeling good. So, when the doctor told me that I should try and avoid dairy (which I had largely cut out anyway), chocolate, peanuts, cashews, seeds, gluten, chicken, oranges, corn, and eggs, I was heavily skeptical.
I had replaced dairy chocolate milk with chocolate-almond-cashew milk about two years ago and I drank that regularly. Both cashew and chocolate came up as potential sensitivities. Was it not enough to cut back on the dairy? I ate a lot of eggs and eggs are an ingredient in a lot of things I eat. So, no more eggs? Come on, chicken? I don’t eat it all the time, but I love fried chicken, and what about grilled chicken thighs? I’ve always been told chicken breast is one of the best lean proteins for you. Well, apparently not for me?

I made the decision that I would do my best to avoid the foods that came back with potential sensitivities for a 2-week period. I would say that I was at least 90% compliant and any of the 10% that wasn’t compliant was a result of a small-trace of a food item that was used as an ingredient in something I ate.
What did I eat for 2 weeks?
The first trip to the grocery store was a long and frustrating one. Finding an attractive gluten-free bread isn’t easy. Finding an attractive gluten-free bread that wasn’t made with egg is near-impossible. I arrived at a gluten-free cinnamon-raisin swirl bread (it actually wasn’t half bad). I also found that many of the foods I was targeting for healthy snacking were made with sunflower seed oil (seeds came up as a sensitivity).
Ultimately, your best bet for snacking with heavy-restrictions is food that doesn’t have a ton of ingredients. For me that was a homemade trail-mix with lightly-salted almonds, raw walnuts, dried cherries and honey-roasted pistachios. Lara bars were a necessary discovery (most are made with 4-7 ingredients only). Peaches and cherries are in season. Green pea snack crisps are inexpensive, made with only 6 ingredients (and you can pronounce them all), and the cracked and spicy black pepper ones play well with an almond butter, pecan, and honey sandwich on the aforementioned gluten-free cinnamon-raisin swirl bread.

When it came to meals, I could still work with steak, pork, fish, rice, sweet potatoes, and avocados. In tandem, there were plenty of onions and peppers chopped, tomato, brussels sprouts (I did not know there was a third ‘s’ in brussels before spellcheck), and of course, cauliflower.
Unfortunately, no non-dairy ice cream made the okay list, so I pivoted to frozen fruit bars (also very few ingredients) for dessert.
Results
The first result was weight-related and as it was explained to me, foods that you have sensitivities to create inflammation in your body (add weight). It shocked me none to see the volatility in both directions during and after the two-week period.

After two weeks of the great food evasion of 2020, I was down 2.6 lbs. (without modifying my physical fitness or sleep patterns). Mind you, I had monitored my weight on daily basis for 2 months prior to this and had weighed in consistently between 188 and 192 for at least a month. I broke the two-week evasion with a pizza, because I love pizza, and weighed in 2 lbs. heavier the next day. Over the course of the next week, I became less rigid with what was going in the fridge and in my body and one week after breaking the two-week evasion, I was up 4 lbs. from the two-week low (also, without modifying my physical fitness or sleep patterns).
The second result was digestion-related and is what made me a believer. Regular digestion came within a few days and at no point over the two-week period was my stomach upset in any way. There’s a difference between the “my body is feeling good,” I subjectively expressed prior to avoiding the laundry list of foods and the “my body is actually feeling good,” that I can say with confidence was a result of avoiding the said foods.
Pulse Test
The doctor provided me with an at-home, easy to execute food sensitivity test (if you’re ever curious). 
The crux of it is that you take your resting pulse (how many beats in 1 minute) with nothing in your system (I opted to do all food sensitivity testing prior to my first meal of the day). Once you are confident in your resting pulse. Put the food item that you want to test in your mouth for 30 seconds and make sure it covers all tastes buds – do not swallow the food item – this is your body’s opportunity to gather all the information it needs on the food item (a significant increase in pulse is your body’s way of preparing to defend the fort). After 30 seconds, keep the food item in your mouth without swallowing and take your pulse for another minute – record your pulse now and note any difference. If you intend to test another food item, do not swallow the food item, if you do not intend to test another food item, it doesn’t matter. Per the above linked article, an increase of 3-4 bpm confirms a food sensitivity. The higher the increase, the more severe the sensitivity. Results from 7 food sensitivity pulse tests below:

Elimination and Moderation
Keep in mind that the following notes and explanations behind them are my own interpretations and not those of a licensed professional.
The combination of the Chocolate Almond-Cashew Milk test and the Milk Chocolate test results revealed to me that the cashew was likely the cause for the pulse spike. As such, I have decided to avoid cashews moving forward. Chocolate did not seem to have much of an effect at all on my pulse, so I will continue to enjoy in moderation.
Parmesan Cheese came back with a +4, so there was a sensitivity to dairy. I had largely removed dairy from my diet anyway, but because the sensitivity is on the milder side, I won’t feel bad about enjoying a pizza from time to time.
My primary bread of choice for quite some time has been sourdough, and that’s mostly because I enjoy the taste – also turns out, it is lower in gluten and easier to digest – who knew? I was pleased to find that my Sourdough Bread test came back with no change in pulse rate. Since that test, I have reintroduced sourdough bread into my weekly rotation.
The Blue Bell Cookie Cake Ice Cream test is the one that is most interesting and unfortunate. Looking at the ingredients list, it shocks me none that I saw a +8 spike in pulse after testing this food. After essentially cleansing my body for two weeks, I think that was its way of telling me that it would prefer if I didn’t go back to eating Blue Bell Cookie Cake Ice Cream. Dairy ice cream as a whole will be an infrequent treat for me moving forward, fortunately, there are plenty of non-dairy ice creams out there (that are starting to taste just as good).

Milk, cream, wheat flour, milkfat, butter, eggs, skim milk, high fructose corn syrup, and corn syrup were all identified food-sensitivities for me + the things I can’t pronounce can’t be good for me + what is a natural flavor anyway? Do those grow on trees somewhere?
The last two food tests that I recorded both involved peanut butter as the primary identified-food sensitivity. Both an almond milk-based, peanut butter-flavored Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and a Clif Chocolate Peanut Butter Builder Bar yielded a +4 jump in pulse. From this, I have decided to moderate any use of peanuts or peanut butter and substitute where possible (almond butter has become a new mainstay for me).
I haven’t tested corn, oranges, egg or chicken yet in isolation, though, it hasn’t been entirely difficult to avoid these foods. I do plan to test them, but I have already mentally decided to move forward in moderation with these food items.
It is worth noting that concentration of a food item likely impacts the effect it may have on your body. Eating an egg and eating something made with egg are likely two different things – I would guess that it’s akin to taking a straight shot of alcohol vs. having a mixed drink.
An Aside on Salt

I, like many of you (I’m guessing), have been under the belief that salt is no good for you. As an aside, a conversation I had with the doctor yielded a new lease on salt. It turns out that table salt is the salt that spikes sodium levels and has been attributed to heart-issues (think salt-shakers/salt-packets at restaurants and the stuff fast food restaurants use). My understanding now is that table salt is boiled at a high temperature and stripped of a TON of minerals that are good for you in the process. The good news is that the salt that isn’t bad for your heart and still has all of the minerals is available at your grocery store. Grey Celtic Sea Salt is my new salt of choice, but here is an article on other salts you should look into / use at-will and without fear.

Fortunately, I’ve never needed or explored a popular diet – I know Paleo and Keto have emerged as popular diets in the past few years and obviously, vegetarians and vegans have been preaching largely plant-based diets for a long time. Those diets are one-size fits all, and that’s not how we’re wired – there’s no magic bullet for everyone. The human body is complex and individual to you and that is probably what the past month or so has opened my eyes to the most.
I must make clear that none of the identified food sensitivities were affecting my quality of life. With the knowledge gained, application and observation, I have decided to make some adjustments moving forward.
Objectively, I just want to feel good with regularity. If that means I have to stop eating certain foods and moderate other foods, I’m willing to do that. I would urge anyone at any age to explore what they are putting in their body and how it may be impacting their sleep, energy, and general well-being.

Orlando Weekend Trip
I know I haven’t posted in a while. It’s been very busy for me as of late and I haven’t had a chance to finish the blogs for my Cebu trip. I will hopefully get back to that vacation soon, but while I have this moment at the Orlando Airport I figured I’d take the time to write out my trip here since it’s probably one of the best, yet short, vacations I’ve ever taken.
Before I detail out what happened, let me first explain how this trip came about. Initially, I wasn’t supposed to go to Orlando at all at this time. Having done a trip in the Philippines for two and a half weeks and also wanting to save up for other “planned” trips throughout the year I figured I’d wait until I’d have a “major” trip (major implying it would cost me more than the usual). Jaymie on the other hand was planning to come down to Orlando with her family with their primary purpose for coming at this time was for the Star Wars Celebration, which is concluding as I write this post. Her brother and parents were going to spend the Saturday (aka yesterday) at the convention while she was going to go spend the day by herself at a theme park.
Not wanting her to go around a theme park by herself (#paranoidboyfriend) and also getting a decent bonus this year, I figured I would go fly down to Orlando to spend that day with her, especially since some of our previous plans had to be pushed back due to her pursuing her master’s degree.
So here I am... or rather, here I was flying down to Orlando. I used some of my IHG rewards points to help keep the costs of the room down at the Holiday Inn in Disney Springs, ten minutes away walking distance from the Disney Springs area. I booked a flight with delta since I have skymiles with them and to also help earn miles for any future trips (especially trips to the Philippines since they are partnered with Korean Air). Initially I was just going to use uber and take mass transit while here in Orlando, but at the last minute my Dad convinced me to rent a car, especially since I turned 25 so rates for me shouldn’t be that bad. I booked a car with Alamo and was ready for my trip to Orlando.
On Friday I woke up a little late seeing as the night before was a raid night (which, sidenote, was a piece of crap because I didn’t get squat from the two bosses I really needed items from > . >). But i managed to get ready and get all that I needed for my trip. I didn’t want to check in any bags considering that I’d have to pay for any checked bags (don’t have the credit card to bypass that, yet...) so I had to keep it to mostly clothes - I figured I could buy the travel sized toiletries at a Walgreens here anyway.
Once I was ready to go, I met my Dad downstairs and drove him and myself to the airport. Since I wasn’t going to drive Xerah (yes, that’s the name of my civic, don’t judge me = 3 =) this weekend I figured I’d take her to the airport and just have my Dad drive her back home. Traffic to JFK wasn’t terrible. It was actually better than I anticipated, so I got there at a reasonable time. After saying goodbye to my Dad I headed to the kiosk to reprint my boarding pass just in case and then headed through security with no issues. Once I found my gate I pretty much just chilled there until my flight was ready to board, catching up on 13 Reasons Why (a good series, would highly recommend btw).
The flight itself was full. I was kinda worried I’d be forced to volunteer my seat but lo and behold, this wasn’t United, so I was pretty safe. Weather was spectacular at both NYC and Orlando so no delays due to weather either. I had an aisle seat and sat next to a woman who kept to herself. While on the airplane, I continued watching 13 Reasons Why and before I knew it, I landed in Orlando!
Pretty sure this is the first time I’ve been in the Orlando airport. If I have been here earlier, I was probably a wee little chlid because I don’t remember being here at all. The airport looks and feels a little smaller than JFK and also looks a little less... modern I guess? Still, at least they had the AC going. After leaving the secure area I made my way to the rental car area and waited on line before getting my car. Initially they told me I was going to drive a Chevy Cruze, which would be cool since that was one of the other cars I was considering instead of the civic. But I ended up renting out a Ford Focus, which was still cool because that car was also another one I was considering XD. It was a hatchback model (eh) but it was still pretty cool, though up til I left it here I still don’t know what half of the buttons on that car did LOL.
After getting my car I used Google maps on my phone to drive to the Holiday Inn in Disney Springs. There was a lot of traffic on the way so it took me about 45 minutes to reach my hotel, but once I arrived, check in was a breeze - they even offered to “upgrade” my room since I was early, giving me the same setup but with a -view of the fireworks... which would’ve been cool if I wasn’t going to be out during the fireworks XD Still, it was nice of them to do this for me, and the room itself wasn’t bad. Pretty spacious non-smoking king bed room with a couch and a nice bathroom. The locking latch was a little weird but other than that no complaints.
Not wanting to waste time just staying in the room and anxious to explore, I changed out of my jeans and into some shorts and walked to Disney Springs. It really was only a ten minute walk and once I got there I wanted to see if I could find a place that sold a lobster roll or a crab roll. The sandwich, not the sushi = 3 = It was Good Friday after all, so no meat. However, after walking the length of Disney Springs and not finding anything like that, I ended up just eating a pizza at Wolfgang Puck’s Express. Yes, I am/was carb backloading, but it was also a vacation - LET ME LIVE = 3 =.
After eating my late lunch (ate around 3pm) I decided to look around to see if there was anything else I wanted. I found a gelato shop and got a scoop of pistachio gelato and a scoop of cookie gelato and finished that up while walking around Disney Springs. It was in that moment that I realized that I really liked Orlando and already started making retirement plans in my heard for this place, but we’ll see how that turns out lol
However, my time at Disney Springs would be cut short as I really had to use the bathroom. So I rushed back to my hotel room and after relieving myself I chilled in my room waiting for Jaymie and her family to arrive. I also had to go to get my toiletries so I took the car to a nearby walgreens to get said toiletries and also ended up getting three cases of purified water for Jaymie’s family, since they said it was cheaper to get that and they would just pay me back later. They then offered to let me go to their resort and eat a “pre-dinner” with them, so I drove to Disney’s Pop Century Resort and chilled with Jaymie and her family in the resort’s cafeteria. It’s a pretty cool place because they had a lot of selections and you could buy this cup that’s free refills for the duration of your stay.
After having a pre-dinner, we brought up the water bottles to their room and then I drove us to Disney Springs where we would eat dinner at Paddlefish. It was pretty packed and since Jaymie’s brother, Michael, has an allergy to fish and shellfish, we had to eat outside so that he wouldn’t be choking on the smells. I ordered scallops, which is kinda funny because it came with brussel sprouts and I actually enjoyed eating the brussel sprouts more than the scallops because the scallops were so freaking salty! But it was a good dinner regardless and after we ate we walked around Disney Springs before I drove them back to their resort to drop them off then headed back to my hotel to rest up for the following day.
Oh boy. Saturday. Saturday was busy AF but at least it didn’t start as early/bad as it did for Jaymie’s family. I woke up, got ready, then went to meet Jaymie at her resort to eat breakfast. After eating breakfast, she and I headed to epcot and because she was staying in a resort she had free parking so I parked in the Epcot lot which was awesome - no relying on shitty bus schedules or shady uber drivers :D We then headed to Epcot but we were running late for our first activity - the Test Track. So we fast walked to that and once we got to the gate in time we took our sweet-ass time walking down the line.
Test Track is probably one of my favorite attractions in all of Disney World. The idea is that you design a car and then you ride a “simulation” of it. No, it’s not a vr thing, though that would be cool. It’s a pre determined track with a bunch of pre-determined events before getting to the main part, which is the power test. For this part, the ride goes as fast as it cans on a pseudo track, reaching a speed above 60 miles per hour (I have a theory that the speed is the average of all the cars created by the people in the actual car). I ended up designing the fastest car so when the scores were tallied up, I had the highest power of all the cars :D
After the Test Track, we decided to go to get some pictures with Baymax. When we got to the Baymax photo spot, we also saw they had one for Joy and Sadness from Inside Out, which we would go to later. After waiting for about thirty minutes and then getting our pics with Baymax, we went to Spaceship Earth since that was our next fast pass. For the uninformed, it’s a slow ride that takes you through a brief history of humanity on Earth. The theme of Epcot is human innovation so that was also a part of this ride.
We still had some time before our lunch reservation at the Coral Reef Restaurant so we figured we’d wait in line to take pictures with Joy and Sadness. They were more interactive than Baymax, but all three of them reacted to the shirt Jaymie was wearing - it was a Teeturtle shirt that showed Batman, Ironman, and Thor jealous of Baymax because Baymax was a bigger hero than the three of them XD. It was cool that they were pointing out Jaymie’s shirt, and it made me wish I wore something more exciting than a plain old blue Uniqlo shirt = 3 =.
After the photo op we headed to the Coral Reef Restaurant where we had lunch. It’s situated next to Epcot’s big aquarium, and I remember Jaymie telling me that she reserved this place because of it. It was pretty cool, I just wish There were dolphins or mamals in general in the aquarium, but I’m not gonna complain lol I ended up having some lobster bisque and a NY strip steak which was pretty good - and pretty filling.
After lunch, we decided to walk around the world showcase area of Epcot. It’s basically a big circle where each segment of the circle is supposed to represent a country. I have no clue how they chose the countries that they had, but it was pretty cool and each country had a restaurant and a few shops with stuff from their respective culture.We decided to go through the countries in clockwise order. I’m not going to outline every single place we went to but I will mention a few highlights. Norway had a new ride based on Frozen, but there weren’t any fast passes available and we didn’t want to wait for 105 minutes to ride it, so we passed by (next time we’ll go hopefully). In China we ended up resting because we were both so tired considering our busy schedules and all the walking and standing on line that we already did. It was cool because they had a few previews of the Disneyland theme park in Shanghai, which is one of the places we wanted to visit at a later time. I was a little disappointed with Italy because they didn’t have a gelato shop. They did have a small stand selling spumoni gelato but I passed since I had that the last time I was in Epcot. When we got to Japan, I had a rainbow shaved ice which was perfect since I was craving something cold and sweet but not creamy. It was strawberry, tangerine, and watermelon flavored and it was really good. Just thinking about it makes me want to eat some shaved ice in Parkchester when I get back home. In France, Jaymie got a chocolate gelato macaroon and a chocolate eclair while I got a “Croosiant Jambon Fromage” or in lay man’s terms, a ham and cheese croissant sandwich = 3 =. Was I overeating? Yes, and I’ll explain that later on, but at the time it was soo good x.x
When we were done with the showcase, I went to a shop to grab a gift for my cousin’s twins since their birthday was last week. I got the boy, my Godson Alex a Mickey Tsumtsum while I got his sister, Isa, a Minnie Tsumtsum. At this point, we pretty much did all that we wanted to do at Epcot, so we headed back to the car, taking a picture at the front of Epcot first, then drove to Magic Kingdom.
I’m pretty sure the last time I went to Magic Kingdom was with my Dad in my trip after I graduated from college. Getting to Magic Kingdom was coomplex AF since we wanted to park in the parking complex in Disney Springs to spare our car from the heat. We ended up walking from Disney Springs to a nearby resort where we took a ferry to another resort to a bus that would take us to the park. This time around? Still a little complex, but instead of parking at Disney Springs, we parked at Magic Kingdom’s parking lot... This time we took a tram to take a ferry that would take us to Magic Kingdom = 3 =
Originally, we were just going to spend the whole day at Epcot, but Jaymie found out about this event they were testing out where you could take a picture with a Tangled theme lantern. So Jaymie ended up buying the parkhopper for us just so we could take part in that event. When we got to Magic Kingdom, I wanted to see if I could get some of the pistachio creme brulee from Tony Roma’s but they don’t do take out so I was a little sad. We then scouted out the place where the tangled event happened, but it was too early so we decided to get some snacks at the Starlight cafe. We got fries and I ended up getting a strawberry lemonade slushy because they had a BB-8 souvenir cup that I wanted to get = 3 =
After chilling at the cafe for a bit, we went to the tangled area again, and waited until it got dark. Then we saw that they were setting up and realized we weren’t on the line so we got on the line, waited about an hour, then got our pictures of the tangled lantern, which turned out pretty great. Mission accomplished! :D
Achieving our goal at Magic Kingdom, we headed back to the car, this time taking the monorail instead of the ferry to get to the parking lot and drove back to Disney Springs where we met up with Jaymie’s family for dinner at Morimoto, an Asian cuisine place. Michael and their parents and family friend told stories of their adventures at the Star Wars celebration while Jaymie and I told them about our trip to Epcot and Magic Kingdom. After dinner, we were all so tired so I took them back to their resort, said my good byes since I was leaving the following day, and went back to my hotel, where I passed out, woke up in the middle of the night to throw up, then went back to sleep = 3 =.
Today, I really didn’t do much. I just went to church at Mary Queen of the Universe to celebrate Easter, then chilled with my cousin Rachel and her twins for a bit, giving them their belated birthday gifts. After that I went to eat lunch at Wendy’s then headed to the airport so I would not be late in bringing the rental car back, made it past security and sitting where I am write now writing this blog post.
Overall, this was probably one of the best trips I’ve ever done recently. One of the things I really liked about it was the amount of independence and responsibility I had for this trip. In the past, I didn’t really pay for anything. Not the plane trip, not the rental car, not the hotel room, not even gas or food! But this time around was different. And though my wallet is crying a little, it does feel a little cool to be able to get these things on my own.
But the best thing about this trip was the time I spent with Jaymie. Just being in disney world together was enough for me to be happy and I can’t wait for our future trips not only to here in Orlando but all throughout the world. Jaymie, if you’re reading this, thank you so much for making this trip so memorable ^_^
I don’t really have much else planned today, just plan on eating dinner with my folks when I get back home, then maybe catch up on WoW since I didn’t even log on since Thursday night. You know a trip is good if it gets you to stop playing WoW, let me just say that haha. I’m probably going to catch up on 13 Reasons Why now so there’s that too.

Here are some dieting hacks I’ve learned for my fat girlies who wanna be just a bit healthier. This isn’t me telling you need to lose weight or become thin- but healthy eating and being active is good for everyone.
1. Almond milk in coffee/lattes/cold brews taste almost exactly the same 2. Cottage cheese is super good for you and works as as a great !!!! Mayo sub. I’ve been hardcore snacking on tuna with cottage cheese and just a bit of mustard for flavor- only like 100 calories 3. Protein PROTEIN!!! Boil some chicken, have eggs (you don’t really have to throw out the Yok) pistachios! Nuts! This shit fills you up and stops you from snacking 4. Spicy condiments generally have very low calories. I know boiled chicken is super boring - but you throw some Siracha on that 👌🏻 5. You want ice cream? Have some cool whip. It’s like five calories. 6. Veggies are great if you know how to cook them- search some recipes on Pinterest. I personally love some brussel sprouts with just a bit of olive oil(fuck canola/veggie oil lmao it’s worth the tiny increase in calories I promise) roasted for about ten minutes to 15 minutes 7. Turkey meat is a godsend!!! I just made turkey chili tastes almost exactly the same and super low calories. It’s also usually pretty cheap bc most people don’t want it!
Get a calorie app- I like MyPlate. Seriously you can still eat the shit you want!! No you can’t have like a Big Mac with fries lmao. But you can have a small slice of pizza or a piece of cheese every now and then. Don’t bother with that fake shit like lean pockets- they may be lower in calories but they’re super toxic. It’s better to eat just a small amount.
Like right now I’m drinking a glass of wine before bed lol. I watched my calories and I’m under goal so, wine me up🙌🏻
Reward yourself. When you’re first starting: reward yourself once a week and then as time goes on, make it twice a month and then once a month. But there are big rewards and small rewards. I like to have some tiny piece of cheese a day bc I’m a white person. But I’m saving a big treat for when I’m a month in(I’ve done this before- start with a week reward seriously)
Plan your food. My fridge right now hs my meals prepped for the next four days and I’ve written the calories on them. I know we’re busy and it can’t always happen- but it helps you stay on track and also save soooo much money.
Healthy eating is expensive don’t let the granola people lie to you. It’s a privilege. I’m lucky that there’s this grocery store here Aldi’s(seriously check to see if you have it it’s sooo good and cheap) but also check out those markets in poorer neighborhoods- you probs don’t want to get veggies or fruit there, but I would bet money there’s some cheap granola stuff and protein cereal. And there’s always eggs and chicken. I buy the cheapest chicken-I’m just broiling it who cares.
Get veggies and fruit at Walmarts. Targets have lots of healthy stuff but some of it is pricey.
Start small with exercise. Don’t join a gym and promise yourself you’re gonna go every day. Set week and month goals.
Like: week 1 I’ll go to the gym once or twice for thirty minutes Month goal: go three times a week for thirty minute intervals
If you set too ambitious goals you’re not gonna hit them and you’re just gonna give up. If you can’t afford a gym- start walking, swing your arms while you walk, carry things. Stretch. The most important thing is to get your body to want to be active!! Bc once it wants to be active it stays active.
Fitbits are great if you have any money bc personally they make me really competitive. I got mine as a gift but I think you can find older versions for about 50 bucks. Don’t buy gym clothes just wear the shit you don’t like- but if you can, good shoes seriously make a difference. When I work out in bad shoes I get tired soooo quick bc my ankles hurt so bad.
Get a water app and track that shit. I like to drink 80 oz a day. And if you cut out salt and do that- you’ll drop about ten pounds pretty quick. You may not feel bloated but I guarantee you are.
And again, start small. Say the first month you get rid of soda. Next month it can be bread. But be proud of every step you do! No one is gonna hang out cheering you on, you have to do it yourself. Keep telling yourself you’ve got this and eventually, you will.
Also the Y will give you financial assistance if you can prove your income! There are lots of gyms that are ten bucks but I personally love the Y cause I’m super into classes. I can stand in the back and not feel like everyone is watching the fat girl make a joke of herself.
Oh and try different machines! You’re gonna hate the first thing you do. Your first gym session is gonna be you stopping every two minutes and that’s good!!! As long as you keep going.

Bacari has an excellent outdoor dining room, covered with massive trees and hanging lamps. It’s tucked far enough back from busy West 3rd St. that it doubles as an impressive oasis, and the wine list - impressively large and just as full of affordable options - only helps. The menu of Mediterranean-ish small plates compliments both the surroundings and the wine very well.
The Little Door $ $ $ $ French  in  Beverly Grove $$$$ 8164 W 3rd St
West Third St. restaurant/tiny magical castle The Little Door reopens for outdoor dining on July 31st, with a new menu and a new chef. This romantic spot will continue to serve French and Mediterranean food, like herb-crusted lamb with fava bean pesto, and chicken breast with lovage and nectarines, alongside a serious French wine list. Reservations only.

Upscale watering hole Double Barrel is open with a massive selection of whiskey to drink on one of their two quiet patios. They’ve also got a wide range of barrel-aged whiskey cocktails, too. Old-school Italian spot Il Cielo is open in Beverly Hills, with a big patio involving a lot of trees and Roman columns. They’ve got everything you’d expect at a spot like this: Bucatini all’Amatriciana, whole branzino, and lots of focaccia. Reservations recommended.

Upscale chain Ocean Prime has reopened their huge Beverly Hills patio with all kinds of steakhouse classics, plus some stuff you might not expect (like sushi rolls). Make a reservation online.

Beverly Hills all-day spot Prospect Gourmand has sidewalk seating open on Robertson Blvd. near Wilshire. Unless you count that time in April when you tried to scare a raccoon away from your chimney, you probably haven’t spent much time on rooftops lately. If you want to change that, The Rooftop By JG is back open at the Waldorf Astoria. Focus on the cocktails - we like the ginger margarita - which are ideal for drinking next to a pool and pretending the world isn’t on fire.

Eataly’s rooftop bar and restaurant Terra is open for patio dining on top of the Westfield Century City. They’re serving a huge menu that has handmade pastas and wood-grilled Italian classics, like branzino, slow-grilled eggplant, and prime beef with parmesan. Reservations required.

Downtown Culver City spot Akasha has reopened with three small dining patios. They’re serving their wide-ranging comfort food menu, which includes everything from cacio e pepe to chicken cauliflower fried rice, and one extremely tasty burger. Reservations online.

If you’re looking for a place to drink margaritas on a patio in Culver City, look no further than Amácita, the Tex-Mex spot on Culver Blvd. Oh, and don’t forget about their excellent nachos, queso, and frosé, either. One of the newest additions to the Platform in Culver City, Bianca Bakery serves French pastries alongside housemade breads and pastas. Stop by for whichever of the tarts look good (our favorites are the pistachio or the chocolate ganache), some tomato and basil focaccia, and the gnocchi pomodoro. Any of them pair well with a glass of sauvignon blanc.

All-day spot Eat Drink Americano has set up a patio in their Arts District parking lot, and even installed overhead cloth tarps for shade. They’ve got salads, sandwiches, and flatbreads, plus a great cocktail selection.

The side patio at Culver City’s local BBQ spot Maple Block reopened last week for lunch, dinner, and brunch. It’s the best place to sit, because you can practically taste the scent of the peach wood burning in the restaurant’s smoker. If you’re there for lunch, get the smoked pork shoulder sandwich - topped with creamy coleslaw and sweet BBQ sauce. Otherwise, try the pork spare ribs for dinner.
 Pasta Sisters Culver City $ $ $ $ Pasta ,  Italian  in  Culver City $$$$ 3280 Helms Ave
This handmade pasta spot at the Helms Bakery complex in Culver City has a huge patio that’s ideal for physical distancing. Along with our favorites like tagliatelle Bolognese and spaghetti and clams, Pasta Sisters has also brought back their excellent (and seasonal) eggplant parmesan. They’re enforcing plenty of rules, like a new separate ordering system for dine-in and takeout, customer temperature checks, and an employee dedicated to finding appropriately-distanced seating.

Public School 310 in Culver City just expanded their outdoor seating. They’ve also got an impressive beer list to-go, plus wine, cocktails, and pub food like wings and pizza. Reservations available here.

This Brooklyn transplant actually reopened before their East Coast cousins, though they’re currently only accepting reservations for patio seating. That patio, however, is pretty nice - it spreads through the courtyard of Culver City’s Platform complex - and Roberta’s roster of pizzas (including the sweet-and-spicy Bee Sting and their savory, mega-cheesy Famous Original) is deep. They’ll also be debuting several new menu items as they ramp up to full dine-in service.

An excellent restaurant in Downtown LA, Bäco Mercat has added window service to their patio. To order, you fill out a paper menu and bring it up to the window, and they’ll call your name to pick up your food. The shortened list of options has some of the greatest hits from their regular menu - including puffy bread with za’atar labneh, burrata-stuffed focaccia, and the tremendous Caesar Brussels sprouts.
 Dama Fashion District $ $ $ $ Latin ,  Caribbean  in  Downtown LA $$$$ 612 E 11th St
Downtown LA spot Dama is back, with a massive patio in the Fashion District and some excellent Latin-inspired food. We especially like the large format meat plates here - including the crispy pork shank with hot pickled vegetables and lettuce cups, and a great roast chicken with tomatillo salsa and fries. Don’t leave without getting the buttered banana soft-serve sundae.

An art gallery, wine bar, and seafood spot in Downtown LA, High Tide is back open on the border of Little Tokyo and the Arts District. Order some oysters and a glass of LA’s best frozé, and watch the glassblower on the patio (from an appropriate distance).

Loqui is a great taco spot with locations in Culver City and the Arts District. The Arts District one has a large front patio, which is an ideal place to drink Mexican craft beer and eat tacos, made with their tremendous homemade flour tortillas.

Manuela, the all-purpose Downtown LA spot, will reopen on Thursday 7/9 for dine-in on their outdoor terrace and patio. They have some of our old favorites like country ham and biscuits and soft shell crab with jalapeño relish, alongside new options like a particularly interesting-looking barbecued king prawn dish. They’re open Tuesday-Sunday for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch - reservations required.

Chinatown’s Oriel is an excellent place to go on a date. (If dates are still happening. We’re not entirely sure.) Regardless, when you’re at this French spot, you’ll find crispy, gooey French onion soup, endless bottles of great European wine, and cheese and charcuterie boards the size of your table. Redbird, the DTLA restaurant in the rectory of an old cathedral, has three outdoor dining areas - a courtyard with a retractable roof, a secret garden in the middle of the building, and a patio overlooking the old church’s bell tower. It’s an upscale spot where you’ll eat green gazpacho with soft shell crab, bucatini with uni and lobster butter, and pork shank with rice grits. Reserve online.

A new spot in Downtown LA near Staples Center, Strada is an all-purpose restaurant with sidewalk seating on W. 9th St. They serve an eclectic menu involving ceviche, lobster ravioli, and an ahi tuna steak burger, and have a full bar. Reservations recommended.
EAST HOLLYWOOD
Lolo Wine Bar $ $ $ $ Wine Bar  in  East Hollywood $$$$ 5140 Sunset Blvd
Lolo in East Hollywood has one of the most underrated patios on the Eastside, thanks to its quiet setting and massive fig trees. The menu is keeping a tight focus to start, serving snacks and focaccia sandwiches at lunchtime, and at night, they’re doing housemade pastas - spaghetti with sungold tomatoes and eggplant, tagliatelle with mushrooms, and ricotta cavatelli with pepper ragu and pork meatballs. They’ve got an excellent wine selection, too, and are offering all bottles from their shop at retail price for dine-in (plus a $10 corkage).

Virgil Village’s natural wine bar Melody converted into a wine shop for much of the pandemic, and now, they’ve reopened their patio, too. Alongside their long wine and beer list, they’ve got weekly pop-ups from spots like Metztli Taqueria and Bun Buds. First come, first served.
EAST LA
 Teddy's Red Tacos $$$$ 6438 Whittier Blvd
The newest location of the quickly expanding Teddy’s Red Tacos, Teddy’s East LA is serving their signature red beef birria in quesadillas, tacos, and vampiros. Get the Deluxe Plate, if you know what’s good for you.
ECHO PARK
 Guisados $ $ $ $ Tacos  in  Echo Park $$$$ 1261 W. Sunset Blvd.
Guisados has reopened almost all of their locations, including the Echo Park outpost, with its back patio in the hills of Chavez Ravine. All the tacos are $3.50 or less, so you can really go crazy here and try a bunch of different stuff. Our favorites are the chicharrón - pork skin simmered in salsa verde - and the super-spicy chiles toreados, with four kinds of hot peppers.
 Lowboy $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Bar  in  Echo Park $$$$ 1534 Sunset Blvd
One of our favorite bars in Echo Park has been doing limited seatings for more than a week now, but if you’re a little nervous about grabbing a burger and a beer inside, fear not: They’ve also got a small enclosed patio on the sidewalk, and they’re cocktails are just as delicious (and deadly strong) outside.
HIGHLAND PARK Hinterhof $$$$ 4939 York Blvd.
Highland Park vegan biergarten Hinterhof is back, with a huge patio and a bunch of plant-based versions of German pub food like sausages, pretzels, and schnitzel. They also have one of the best selections of German craft beers on tap in town. Plus, you should never turn down the opportunity to drink beer out of a glass boot.
Monte 52 $ $ $ $ Sandwiches  in  Highland Park $$$$ 5200 Monte Vista St
Monte 52 is an inventive sandwich spot in the back of La Tropicana market in Highland Park, and they’ve reopened their sidewalk seating for diners. Nothing on the menu is over $11, and it’s hard to go wrong here. But if you really can’t decide, get the Cubano - it’s among the best versions of the sandwich in town.
HOLLYWOOD
3rd Base $$$$ 1562 N Cahuenga Blvd
Hollywood sports bar 3rd Base is back open, with a patio on Selma Ave. They’ve been running a bunch of alliterative promos (always the best kind) since reopening, like Taco & Tequila Tuesdays, and Wine, Whiskey, and Wing Wednesdays. Which is quite a combination. Reservations through their website.
 Angelini Alimentari $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Cafe/Bakery ,  Dessert  in  Beverly Grove $$$$ 7317 Beverly Boulevard
Fairfax’s local Italian cafe, Angelini Alimentari, reopens their courtyard patio on June 12. Our order is always the prosciutto panini and some chocolate gelato, but they’ve got all kinds of sandwiches, salads, and pastas available. Next door, they’re also reopening the more formal Angelini Osteria.
 L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele $ $ $ $ Pizza  in  Hollywood $$$$ 1534 N McCadden Pl
Hollywood pizza spot L’Antica reopened their big patio in early June, with limited seating. If you’re headed there, we recommend sticking to the pizzas - our favorites are the Bianca and the Margherita. The original location in Naples is the pizza spot in Eat Pray Love, which are three things you’re probably trying to do a lot of right now.
 Yamashiro Hollywood $ $ $ $ Japanese  in  Hollywood $$$$ 1999 N Sycamore Ave
Yamashiro, the massive Japanese restaurant in the Hollywood Hills, feels as much like a public garden as it does a restaurant, with their meticulously manicured courtyard patio. They’re reopening on June 19, and should be able to take care of your sake and spicy albacore-related needs.

La Brea’s biergarten is back open with their German comfort food and imported craft beer. It’s an ideal place to spend a Saturday, drink some doppelbocks, order a wurstplatte (sausage platter) and watch the recently resumed Bundesliga.
KOREATOWN
 Ddong Ggo $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 528 S Western Ave
If you’re looking to cut loose, drink a dozen beers, rip a few cigs, and power through a seafood pancake or six, then Ddong Ggo is your spot. This no-frills Ktown party pavilion is open for business, and even though the patio can (and will) get smoky, if that’s your kind of scene, then this is exactly what you’ve been dreaming of after 475 days in quarantine.
 Tokyo Hamburg $ $ $ $ Japanese ,  Bar Food  in  Koreatown $$$$ 600 S New Hampshire Ave.
Japanese spot Tokyo Hamburg reopened with outdoor seating in their parking lot in the heart of Koreatown. In addition to the hot-stone grill-your-own burgers we love, they’ve got an all-day Happy Hour that involves $4 beers and $1 oysters.
Los FELIZ  Alcove Cafe & Bakery $ $ $ $ American ,  Cafe/Bakery  in  Los Feliz $$$$ 1929 Hillhurst Ave.
Both the dining room and patio at this Los Feliz restaurant are open. Located in two converted houses on Hillhurst, this is one of the best outdoor spaces out there — perfect for penning the next King Lear, or sweating through every fiber of your clothes. Plus, they have a really good eggs Benedict.
Figaro Bistrot $ $ $ $ French  in  Los Feliz $$$$ 1802 N Vermont Ave
Los Feliz sidewalk spot Figaro Bistrot actually reopened in late May, with their French cafe food, and all kinds of European wines. Things can get expensive, but when you’re drinking a glass of pinot on an empty Vermont Avenue, you can’t be too mad about it.
 Fred 62 $$$$ 1850 N Vermont Ave
In “normal” times, Fred 62 was a 24-hour diner on Vermont across from the Los Feliz 3. Since reopening, they’re a 17-hour diner (7am-midnight), which is still pretty useful. They’ve got plenty of sidewalk seating for eating diner classics like all-day omelettes, mac & cheese balls, and Juicy Lucys, along with some recently added pan pizzas.
Home Restaurant $ $ $ $ American  in  Los Feliz $$$$ 1760 Hillhurst Ave
In a neighborhood that knows good patios (Los Feliz), Home is one of our favorites. The leafy space on Hillhurst doesn’t exactly feel like a home, but it is a great place to hang with a few friends and burn an entire Thursday afternoon drinking mimosas and people-watching.

Los Feliz locals’ spot Little Dom’s has reopened their patio seating for nightly dinner and weekend brunch, both of which will involve wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, and, hopefully, martinis. Reservations required.

Another French cafe in Los Feliz, Loupiotte is the ideal place for a 2pm glass of wine when “work from home” isn’t going as well as you might have hoped. Pair it with some creamy polenta with mushrooms and a fried egg, or their excellent burger - made with gruyere and confit d’oignons (jammy onions) - and you’ll be very happy. They’ve got a partially-covered patio with a few tables off Vermont.

Los Feliz’s summer camp-themed Messhall has reopened for patio dining. Their all-day menu includes a fish fry, smoked ribs, and crab cakes, along with some really great cocktails and a few kinds of oysters. They’ve got an all-day menu weekday lunch and nightly dinner, and a weekend brunch menu. Reserve on their website.
LONG BEACH
Ballast Point Tasting Room $ $ $ $ Long Beach $$$$ 110 N Marina Dr
A massive, two-level party spot on the marina in Long Beach, Ballast Point is among the best patios in the city, if you can handle the post-grads also taking up space here. You’ll watch boats on the harbor while you drink from the massive, all-Ballast Point beer list and eat wings and nachos.
MALIBU
 Inn of the Seventh Ray $ $ $ $ American  in  Malibu $$$$ 128 Old Topanga Canyon Rd
Buried deep in the Malibu mountains at Topanga State Park is Inn Of The Seventh Ray, which has reopened for all-day dining. The leafy patio is an extremely pleasant place to spend a Saturday afternoon, especially with a cheese plate, some crispy shrimp cakes, and a glass of wine. Or three.
 Malibu Farm $ $ $ $ American ,  Scandinavian  in  Malibu $$$$ 23000 Pacific Coast Hwy
Home to one of the best views in LA, Malibu Farm has reopened their restaurant - or at least the patio portion of it - on the Malibu Pier, if you want to stop in for a brunch cocktail and those excellent berry-topped pancakes after a trip up PCH. Malibu Cafe (their sibling restaurant at the end of the Pier) is still closed.
 Nobu $ $ $ $ Japanese ,  Sushi  in  Malibu $$$$ 22706 Pacific Coast Hwy
The closest you came to dining by the water during quarantine was parking your car on the side of Silver Lake Reservoir and eating a snack pack of hummus and pretzel chips. If you’re looking to come back with a bang, Nobu Malibu is a great place to do it. They’ve got some of the best views of the Pacific in town, and - this is a scientific fact - no one has ever been mad about eating their yellowtail with jalapeño.

If you’ve driven on PCH before, then you’ve seen Reel Inn’s giant neon sign. This retro spot is full of red checkered picnic tables that you’ll fill up with seafood classics like fish and chips, fried calamari, and steamed mussels. No one has ever been mad about eating fish and chips with a pitcher of beer while looking at the ocean, so this is a great place to spend an afternoon.
MAR VISTA Rustic Kitchen Market & Café $$$$ 3523 S Centinela Ave
The Mar Vista cafe and wine bar has expanded their heated patio to maximize social distancing. Open from 10am-9pm daily, it’s a great place to grab a quick meal or a snack and - of course - a couple glasses of wine. Call ahead for a table - (310) 390-1500.
NORTH HOLLYWOOD  The Fat Dog $ $ $ $ American  in  North Hollywood $$$$ 11050 Magnolia Blvd
North Hollywood’s Fat Dog has reopened their huge patio. This is usually a place that’s packed with studio folks getting after-work drinks, but with most studios still working from home, things should be pretty calm here. Get the crab and Hollandaise-topped potato skins, and the short rib French dip with your beer or glass of wine.
Idle Hour Bar $ $ $ $ North Hollywood $$$$ 4824 Vineland Ave
One of our favorite bars in The Valley is back open, although, according to their Instagram, “space is extremely limited.” Make sure to email [email protected] for a table before you head over. Social-distancing rules remain in effect, though it’s not clear if you have to remain six feet away from the giant bulldog statue on the patio.
 Pitfire Pizza Company $$$$ 5211 Lankershim Blvd
North Hollywood’s Pitfire Pizza opened a beer garden-style patio last fall, setting them up well for outdoor-only pandemic dining. Their wood-fired pizzas are where to focus your attention, particularly the Field Mushrooms, with enoki and cremini mushrooms and fontina cheese.
PACIFIC PALISADES The Draycott $$$$ 15255 Palisades Village
We can’t all live in the Palisades, but we can at least have dinner there every once in a while. And The Draycott is a great place to do that, especially on the patio full of wicker chairs and white tablecloths. The English pea dip with sourdough is a good place to start, and we also like the hanger steak frites with Bearnaise sauce. Things can get expensive quickly, so just keep that in mind.
PASADENA 1886 Bar at The Raymond $ $ $ $ Pasadena $$$$ 1250 S Fair Oaks Ave
The Raymond is an upscale American spot in an extremely impressive, nearly 150-year-old hotel in Pasadena. The food isn’t going to blow you away, but you’re really here to sit outside and drink a glass of wine on a beautiful patio for the first time in what feels like three years.
Bodega Wine Bar $$$$ 300 E Colorado Blvd,
A good spot to grab a glass of wine and get some work done in Pasadena, Bodega’s patio is back open with pizzas, wine-drinking snacks like bacon-wrapped dates and cheese boards, and (of course) a huge wine list.
 The Luggage Room Pizzeria $ $ $ $ Pizza  in  Pasadena $$$$ 260 S Raymond Ave
Another Pasadena spot, Luggage Room Pizzeria is a good place to go with a group and split some pies. They’ve got a bunch of options, all with inventive topping combinations, but our favorite is the Fallen Angel - house-made Italian sausage, basil, shaved fennel, and roasted peppers. As a bonus, Stone Pasadena is next door, and while they’re still closed for dine-in, you can order beers there and bring them over to drink with your meal at Luggage Room.
 Maestro $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Pasadena $$$$ 110 E Union St
Another great Mexican spot, Maestro is an upscale Pasadena restaurant with a quiet patio in a busy part of Old Pas. Whether you’re there for brunch or dinner, it’s a great place to eat inventive spins on classic dishes like arrachera with chorizo chimichurri and chile poblano chickpea rice, or the seared dayboat scallops with huitlacoche rice. Get a barrel-aged mezcal cocktail or a watermelon margarita while you’re there.
PICO  My Two Cents $ $ $ $ Southern  in  Pico Robertson $$$$ 5583 W Pico Blvd
An excellent Southern comfort food spot on Pico, My Two Cents has reopened their patio seating. Don’t think too hard about your order here - it’s going to involve the shrimp and grits, an incredible pork chop, and some excellent iced tea.
SANTA MONICA Bergamot Cafe $$$$ 2525 Michigan Ave #A3
Bergamot Cafe is an ideal place for a quick, affordable weekday lunch. This daytime spot off Olympic in Santa Monica not only serves an excellent veggie burger - a black bean and corn patty topped with chipotle aioli and cheddar - and a killer roast beef and avocado sandwich, but nearly everything on the menu is $10 or less. And, if you’ve got the time, It’s also a fun, low-key place to drink outside for an extended lunch, thanks to their beer and wine list.
 Big Dean's Ocean Front Cafe $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Bar  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 1615 Ocean Front Walk
The classic Santa Monica hangout - located steps from the beach and basically, like, kinda behind the Pier? - reopens both their front and back patios on June 11, with the usual precautions in place (face masks required, no more than six per table, etc). You also have to order food, a rather clever way to skirt the state’s “bars must remain closed” mandate, though you would’ve anyway - Big Dean’s double cheeseburger is one of the best in the city.

Birdie G’s, the comfort food spot in Santa Monica, has expanded their patio for reopened dine-in. They’ve got a pared-down menu with options like wood-grilled morcilla sausage, matzo brei with duck and porcini mushrooms, and sliced beef tongue with potato waffles. Reservations highly recommended.

Formerly known as Bondi Harvest, Bluey’s is an Australian cafe in Santa Monica that’s open for patio dining 7am-9pm (8am-9pm on weekends). They’ve got a great breakfast plate involving eggs, bacon, Tabasco kale, roasted tomatoes, and avocado, along with a bunch of sandwiches (like coconut-marinated chicken) you’ll want to order, and a new dinner menu. Plus, the coffee is phenomenal. First-come, first-served.
BOA Steakhouse $$$$ 101 Santa Monica Blvd
Clubby steakhouse BOA is on the corner of Ocean and Santa Monica in one of the busiest parts of the Westside. They’ve got sidewalk seating for you to eat all the lobster tails and ribeyes you can afford. So, like, one of each, maybe. Reservations recommended.
 Fia $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 2454 Wilshire Blvd
They took over the old Wilshire spot in Santa Monica last year, and remain one of the city’s best-kept secrets, thanks in no small part to their fantastic, tree-filled back patio. Now’s your chance to see it for yourself. While the Coastal Mediterranean menu’s not the most inventive (plenty of burrata, handmade pastas, and a raw bar), Fia makes the kind of crowd-pleasing food that absolutely anyone will enjoy. Ma'Kai Lounge $$$$ 101 Broadway
Makai Lounge is a clubby spot on the corner of Ocean and Broadway in Santa Monica. They’ve reopened their patio for dine-in, with wide-ranging options like sushi rolls, shrimp skewers, and cheeseburgers.
Massilia $ $ $ $ Spanish ,  French ,  Italian  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 1445 4th St
On Fourth St. in Santa Monica, Massilia has a covered patio where they serve a mix of French, Moroccan, and Italian food. This means options like tagliatelle with morel mushroom cream sauce, couscous with merguez sausage and lamb, and pizza with prosciutto. No matter what, don’t skip the white Negroni, made with Aviation gin and Lillet.
The Misfit Restaurant + Bar $ $ $ $ American  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 225 Santa Monica Blvd
One of the best places to eat on the Third Street Promenade, The Misfit is open daily for lunch, Happy Hour, and dinner. They’ve got burgers, sandwiches, salads, and stellar cocktails. Happy Hour until 6pm daily.
 Pasjoli $ $ $ $ French  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 2732 Main St
Santa Monica’s excellent French spot Pasjoli is back open, with a newly redesigned back patio and a pared-down menu that still includes many of our favorites. That means house-baked brioche with chicken liver mousse and shaved truffle, a caramelized onion tart with gruyere, and crispy duck breast with duck leg bread pudding. Walk-in only for lunch, reservations recommended for dinner.
Socalo $$$$ 1920 Santa Monica Blvd
Santa Monica Cal-Mex spot Socalo reopened (and expanded) their outdoor dining area. They’ve also got margaritas and some Mexican craft beer available all day, as well. Reservations are recommended for dinner, but it’s first-come, first-served at lunch.
Solidarity $ $ $ $ Eastern European  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 1414 Lincoln Blvd
Santa Monica Polish spot Solidarity has a secret back patio that’s a great place to eat pierogies and drink a few too many Warsaw Mules (made with Zubrowka). If you’re looking for something a bit bigger, the golabki (stuffed cabbage, beef, and jasmine rice) is one of our go-tos, but with comfort classics like schnitzel, stroganoff, and handmade gnocchi in mushroom cream sauce on the menu, you can’t go wrong.
SAWTELLE  Marugame Udon $ $ $ $ Japanese  in  Sawtelle Japantown $$$$ 2029 Sawtelle Blvd
Japantown noodle shop Marugame is back, opening their small patio on Sawtelle for anyone looking for fresh, handmade udon. Follow your heart when you order, but our favorite is the Mentai Kamatama - a briny bowl of noodles with spicy cod roe, onsen tamago (hot spring egg), and shredded nori. Follow it up with some Honeymee soft-serve, just down the street.
SILVER LAKE/Frogtown El Cid $ $ $ $ Silver Lake $$$$ 4212 W Sunset Blvd
A classic spot on Sunset Blvd., this music and dance venue in Silver Lake has reopened their back patio for drinking and dining. The menu is all bar food - chicken wings, nachos, and an Impossible burger - which is ideal for eating alongside their super-strong margaritas. They’re requiring patrons to wear masks at all times when not dining, and highly recommend making reservations. For more information, check out their Instagram.
The Kitchen $$$$ 4348 Fountain Ave
A Silver Lake locals’ spot that’s been around since 2000 (approximately 100 years in Silver Lake time), The Kitchen reopened their sidewalk seating for dining. The menu is mostly comfort food, which we all need a bit of right now - mac & cheese, meat loaf, and chicken pot pie, among many others. They’ve also got a small but very affordable beer and wine list.
 Ma'am Sir $ $ $ $ Filipino  in  Silver Lake $$$$ 4330 W Sunset Blvd
Ma’am Sir might not have the biggest patio in town - it’s a parking-lot sized section of Sunset in front of their Silver Lake spot - but if you want to eat Filipino food outside, this is a great place to do it. They’re constantly changing the menu, but have recently been serving chicken-fried mushroom sandwiches, sisig burritos, and whole-cooked milkfish bento boxes.
Rockwell Table and Stage $ $ $ $ American ,  Bar Food  in  Los Feliz $$$$ 1714 N Vermont Ave
You probably know Rockwell more for their burlesque shows than their food, but that shouldn’t stop you from going by for Happy Hour or brunch on the patio. They’ve got two levels of outdoor seating for you and your quarantine buddies to grab a table, order some cocktails, and split a BBQ chicken flatbread.
 Spoke Bicycle Cafe $ $ $ $ American  in  Atwater Village ,  Frogtown ,  Silver Lake $$$$ 3050 N Coolidge Ave
Spoke Cafe is a great Frogtown spot on the LA River Bike Path, serving sandwiches, coffee, beer, and wine. They’ve got a big, open patio, the best vegetarian burger in the city (house-made with smoked mushrooms and beets), and waffle fries that will take you directly back to middle school in the best way possible..
SOUTH BAY  Jame Enoteca $ $ $ $ Italian  in  El Segundo $$$$ 241 Main St.
Jame might be the best place to eat pasta outside in the South Bay. This El Segundo strip mall spot has a covered patio where you can socially distance to drink some California reds alongside Caesar salads flavored with Calabrian chilies, crispy braised pork shank in lambrusco-mustard sauce, and some truly excellent pasta. Our favorite changes by the day, but you can’t go wrong with the beef cheek scarpinocc or spicy rigatoni alla vodka.
 Madre $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Torrance $$$$ 1261 Cabrillo Ave
One of our favorite Oaxacan spots in town, South Bay’s Madre has opened back up, and that includes their sidewalk patio. Narrowing down your options isn’t easy, but the barbacoa de chivo (heavily spiced BBQ goat), costillas en salsa verde (spicy fried pork ribs), and estofado mole are our favorites here. Get as involved in the mezcal selection as you can - it’s the best we’ve seen in all of LA. Madre’s Palms location is open, too, with a small sidewalk patio.
 Playa Provisions $ $ $ $ American  in  Playa Del Rey $$$$ 119 Culver Blvd
Playa Provisions, the sprawling spot by the beach in Playa del Rey, has a couple small patios for you to socially distance on, and they’ve just turned their parking lot into an even bigger space for dining. We go straight for the patty melt when we’re here - it’s made with dry-aged beef and some really tremendous BBQ sauce. Their cocktails are good, too, and if you’re into whiskey, they’ve got one of the best selections in town.
Sausal $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  El Segundo $$$$ 219 Main St
Sausal is a modern Mexican spot in El Segundo with a front patio that’s great for kicking back, drinking a few margaritas, and snacking on some tacos. Food can get a bit pricey here, so we’re hoping their excellent Happy Hour returns as well.
VENICE The Anchor $ $ $ $ American ,  Seafood  in  Venice $$$$ 235 Main St
The Anchor in Venice is a neighborhood hangout on Main St., with a large, recently expanded, patio. The best things here involve lobster (as is often the case) - the lobster roll with black truffle, lobster mac & cheese, and brunch lobster Benedict are all good bets.  Holly Liss Barrique $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Venice $$$$ 796 Main Street
The patio at Barrique feels like the backyard of the Venice bungalow you’ll probably never be able to afford. The candles, low light, and extensive Italian wine list make this a great place for your first date night in months (especially with the added privacy of socially distanced tables). Share some housemade pastas, like beef ravioli or Dungeness crab spaghetti, and some smoked duck, and you’ll walk out happy.
 The Butcher's Daughter $ $ $ $ American ,  Vegetarian  in  Venice $$$$ 1205 Abbot Kinney
Venice’s Butcher’s Daughter is open 8am-10pm daily, serving vegetarian and vegan-friendly food on their Abbot Kinney patio. The all-day menu includes breakfast options, pizzas, and some larger plates - cliched as it is, though, our favorite thing here is the avocado toast, no matter what the time of day. They’re requiring masks while you’re not eating, have touchless payment, and hand sanitizing stations.
Café Gratitude $$$$ 512 Rose Ave
The exclusively plant-based Cafe Gratitude has reopened all of their LA locations (Arts District, Larchmont, and Venice) for patio dining. They’re open daily 11am-8pm, and weekend for brunch 9am-1pm, offering tacos, pizzas, sandwiches, and more.
 Chulita $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Venice $$$$ 533 Rose Ave
A bright, sunny spot in Venice, Chulita has a patio and open-air dining room along Rose Ave. They serve Mexican-inspired plates like cauliflower al pastor tacos and esquites, and have a long, tequila- and mezcal-heavy cocktail list.
WEST ADAMS  Jakob Layman Alta Adams $ $ $ $ Southern  in  West Adams $$$$ 5359 West Adams Blvd
West Adams’ excellent Southern spot Alta has a huge back patio that’s tucked back from the busy street into a quiet residential neighborhood. They’re only open from 11am-6pm at the moment, but fortunately, they offer some of our favorite dinner items in the daytime: Pimento dip, black-eyed pea fritters, and perfectly crispy fried chicken.
 Johnny's West Adams $ $ $ $ Sandwiches  in  Jefferson Park ,  West Adams $$$$ 4327 W Adams Blvd
Closed since 2015, Johnny’s Pastrami reopened in mid-June in West Adams, with new ownership from the Mizlala team and a new-ish name: Johnny’s West Adams. They’ve got a brick patio behind the restaurant with long wooden tables, where you can drink cocktails with house-made soda and eat all kinds of Jewish deli staples on the menu like matzo ball soup, potato knish, and, of course, pastrami sandwiches on rye. First-come, first-served.
Mizlala West Adams $ $ $ $ Mediterranean  in  West Adams $$$$ 5400 W Adams Blvd
Casual Middle Eastern spot Mizlala is a great place to grab an easy lunch in West Adams. They serve things like kefta, pargiyot chicken, and chicken shawarma as pita wraps, salads, or plates. There’s also an enclosed patio on West Adams Blvd.
WEST HOLLYWOOD  40 Love $$$$ 829 N La Cienega Blvd
40 Love is a sports bar on LA Cienega in Weho with plenty of outdoor space, bar food, beer, wine, and cocktails. All of this will be of particular interest to you now that sports are actually happening.
Catch $ $ $ $ Seafood ,  Raw Bar  in  West Hollywood $$$$ 8715 Melrose Ave
If you’re looking to hang out on a beautiful rooftop with a giant tree growing out of the middle of it, Catch is the spot for you. They’ve got everything from sushi rolls and filet mignon skewers, along with lots of vegan options. Reservations available on their website.
 Connie And Ted's $ $ $ $ Seafood  in  West Hollywood $$$$ 8171 Santa Monica Blvd.
New England seafood spot Connie & Ted’s has reopened, and their huge patio on Santa Monica in Weho is a perfect spot to eat all the shellfish you couldn’t figure out how to shuck at home. The seafood is fresh and tremendous, so just trust your instincts here - especially if your instincts are telling you to get the New England seafood boil, with mussels, steamers, lobster, linguica, and corn on the cob.
 Craig's $ $ $ $ American ,  Italian  in  West Hollywood $$$$ 8826 Melrose Ave
Survey any ten celebrities at random about their favorite restaurant, and there’s a good chance you’ll hear Craig’s more than once. This Weho spot has sausage pizzas we’re very into, and some of our favorite free table bread around. Call (310) 276-1900 for reservations.
 Jakob Layman Electric Owl $ $ $ $ American  in  Hollywood ,  West Hollywood $$$$ 1451 N Gardner St.
After a long hiatus, this train station-themed bar in Weho is back for dine-in and takeout service. And the best part? They’ve made their 4/20 Happy Hour menu available all-day long. Which means you no longer have to wait for the late afternoon to get discounted prices on smashburgers, French bread pizza, and mimosas. Or to get high, for that matter.
 David Higgs E.P. & L.P. $$$$ 603 N LA Cienega Blvd
The rooftop at Weho spot EP & LP is back open with plexiglass barriers, cashless transactions, and “sanitation hosts” (which are not, contrary to what we thought, Westworld characters). They also have an all-new menu, a Southeast Asian-inspired selection of small plates that are all $8-$15, like three-pepper squid, fried crab curry, and twice-cooked BBQ pork belly.
 Formosa Cafe $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Chinese ,  Bar  in  West Hollywood $$$$ 7156 Santa Monica Blvd.
Formosa Cafe, the recently-revived Old Hollywood haunt in Weho, has reopened for excellent cocktails and dim sum from the same chef as Little Fatty. Get some chile wontons and XO Fatty (chow fun) to go with whatever tropical cocktails you’re chugging. Their upstairs outdoor space is small, so we highly recommend making a reservation through their website.
 Gracias Madre $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  West Hollywood $$$$ 8905 Melrose Ave
Weho’s largely outdoor spot Gracias Madre has reopened their patio for dine-in, serving vegan Mexican cuisine and some excellent cocktails. They’ve got Happy Hour - with $7 house margaritas (get it spicy and with mezcal) and $8 nachos you should absolutely order - Monday-Friday, 4-6pm, dinner 4-10pm daily, weekend brunch Saturday & Sunday 11am-3pm. Reservations recommended.
Harlowe Bar $ $ $ $ West Hollywood $$$$ 7321 Santa Monica Blvd
Pre-COVID, Harlowe was our favorite place to drink too many draft cocktails on a Saturday night. But they’ve brought in a new chef (formerly of The Little Door) to open as a full restaurant, with Mediterranean food like pappardelle with tomato Pernod sauce and pesto, and Moroccan lamb stew with couscous and harissa. Reservations here.
Katana Robata $$$$ 8439 W Sunset Blvd
Japanese-inspired spot Katana is in the heart of the Sunset Strip, and has a large patio in the middle of the restaurant. They’ve got robata, steaks, and lots of things involving truffle oil. Reservations recommended.
 Lala's Argentine Grill $$$$ 7229 Melrose Ave
Argentine spot Lala’s is back open on Melrose in Weho, with a covered patio where they’re serving all kinds of grilled meats like pollo a la brasa, ribeyes, and NY strip steaks.
Saddle Ranch Chop House $ $ $ $ West Hollywood $$$$ 8371 W Sunset Blvd
Even though we suspect no one is going to be riding any mechanical bulls anytime soon, you can still go to Saddle Ranch Chop House, the massive bar/restaurant in Weho. They’ve got multiple patios on the Sunset Strip, where they serve burgers, steaks, and strong, sweet margaritas. Reservations on their website.
 Spartina $ $ $ $ American ,  Italian  in  Fairfax $$$$ 7505 Melrose Ave
Spartina is an Italian restaurant open for dining on their large patio in Weho, with handmade pastas and crunchy pizzas. They’ve got dinner every night, plus weekday lunch, and a weekend brunch that involves an excellent guanciale bacon and egg pizza. Reserve on their website.
Strings Of Life $$$$ 8535 Melrose Ave
Strings Of Life in Weho is a new all-day spot inspired by Australian cafes. This Melrose restaurant has a massive menu with all kinds of sandwiches, salads, and even Fairy Bread. First-come, first served.
 Tacos Tu Madre $$$$ 1111 N Hayworth Ave
Tacos Tu Madre has a few locations across the city, but the one in Weho is special for two reasons: They’ve got a big patio, and, more importantly, they’ve got a shiny new license to serve alcohol. That means you can suck down margaritas while you eat crispy shrimp tacos.
 Zinque $ $ $ $ American ,  French  in  West Hollywood $$$$ 8684 Melrose Ave
Zinque has several locations around town and they’re all open. That means the days of drinking too much rosé on their patio, snacking on tartines and their famous “Le Bowl,” and stumbling home on a Saturday night have returned. Hooray.

I ranked the following based on taste alone. I made no consideration for ambiance or the general dining experience or whatever. I included meals I got to go. I included food trucks, and I included fast food. Here’s how it all shook out.
