Hidden Gems in San Diego that are Staying Safe
Tumblr media
I have grown up in San Diego since I was 4 years old, and I've barely even scratched the surface of the amazing food culture this city has. Here are some spots I have found since becoming a foodie and broadening my horizons. While the COVID-19 pandemic has definitely been a challenge for us all, it has been especially tough on the restaurant industry; feel free to show your support by going to some of these amazing places.
Lourdes Mexican Food
Cardiff by the Sea
 No website
They have the best caldo de pollo (chicken soup) in San Diego. It brightens up your day and is the best thing when feeling glum. It comes with either flour or corn tortillas and will rock your world. I also happen to think they have some bomb carnitas and recommend trying that as well. Pictured below is the wonderful soup in question and a carnitas taco. (pre-covid)
Tumblr media
Tribute Pizza
North Park
 https://www.tributepizza.com/
Is an innovative pizzeria based out of an old post office building. They have weekly special pizza labeled “The Tribute” which ranges from all sorts of fresh ideas such as “our tribute to the Alsatian flambeed classic pizza, with cognac infused organic creme fraiche, caramelized onions and shallots, shaved cremini mushrooms, lamb chopper sheep's milk gouda, parsley and parmigiano reggiano, and the option for crispy bacon” which was fantastic. They also have amazing brussels sprouts, focaccia, charcuterie boards, and seasonal desserts. Instagram is the best place to check in on what exciting offers they have at any given time. Pictured below is one of their amazing cheese boards. (pre-covid)
Tumblr media
Pop Pie/Stella jeans
University Heights
https://www.poppieco.com/
Pop Pie is a fantastic pie shop/ ice cream sister combo restaurant adventure. On one side you have amazing savory, sweet pies, and coffee. These individual sized savory pies come in flavors such as green hog & cheese, classic chicken, and roasted veggies & yellow curry. On the other, you have gourmet flavors of ice cream such as matcha pistachio, ube + pandesal, and brown butter pecan. Stella Jean's has an ever-changing menu for these fantastic flavors and I highly recommend following both businesses on Instagram. Pictured below is a Stella Jean Pint of specialty ice cream.
Tumblr media
Northside shack
North Park & Point Loma
While the website is unfortunately rather outdated in terms of information and aesthetic, Northside Shack is a fantastic customizable acai bowl establishment that also offers a wide variety of smoothies. It is a great place to get a boost of energy for the day through some super fresh fruit. Pictured below is an acai/pitaya bowl I couldn't have devoured faster if I tried.
Tumblr media
Shank & Bone
North Park
https://www.shankandbone.com/
Shank & Bone has amazing Vietnamese food including bun bowls, pho, and some fun fusion items. You can’t go wrong with anything, but I would recommend the grilled shrimp bun bowl because their grilled shrimp is off-the-charts delicious. I also think they have some of the best pho broth I have ever had, and that's definitely saying something given the breadth of my foodie journey. Pictured below is their amazing Saigon chicken wings.
Tumblr media
This is just the tip of the iceberg of hidden gems scattered through-out San Diego. It has been a huge help to have some places to look forward to frequenting during COVID-19, and I take great comfort in knowing that I can rely on their sanitation and safety. Comment below if you have any new and exciting recommendations; I'm always thrilled to dive deeper into this city's culinary scene. Above all else, stay safe out there!

Easter is a very important holiday in Italy, and like most Italian holidays it revolves around both the church and holiday food specialties. Easter in Italy is a Christian based holiday, which begins on Palm Sunday, and culminates the following week on Easter Sunday. Easter Monday also known as Pasquetta, or Little Easter, is also celebrated with family which brings the Easter season to an end. On Easter Monday, often Easter leftovers are enjoyed in a more informal setting, or everyone heads outside to enjoy the spring warmth and picnics with family and friends. Here are a few Italian recipes that would be perfect for your Easter celebrations. Some recipes are traditional Easter recipes, while others showcase seasonal ingredients for spring. As much as we love Philadelphia, we enjoy a little adventure outside the city limits. And believe us when we tell you, Rize Pizza is West Chester and Broomall, PA is most definitely worth the trip. Owners Julia Angelos and Jim Haralambidis aim to elevate your standards of pizza. They make all pizzas with their unique homemade crusts. The ‘Rize Crust’ is used with all their slices. It rises naturally for 2-3 hours and produces a square pie with an airy and crispy crust which is coated with sesame seeds on the bottom and deceptively light. This special recipe took over 6 years to perfect. Any pie can be ordered, but it is only available as a Large approx. 11″ x 17″ (8 slices). The ‘Traditional Crust’  is thin and round like a traditional Neapolitan pie. This style crust only comes in a small 12” size (6 slices).
“We’ve had our first Broomall location for two and a half years,” Julia described, “and we knew it was a small location. We wanted to open up a second, bigger location where people could sit down and enjoy the Rize crust. So when we first started the journey, we fell in love with not only the space, but the town. West Chester really seems to love pizza. There’s a lot of pizza places.”
Jim’s family has been in the restaurant business since 1976. However, while in school Jim was pursuing a career in art. Then the family business reeled him in and he turned down acceptance to Parsons School of Design in New York City. His sister also has the industry in her blood, she works in corporate catering in Conshohocken, PA with her business, Cafe Zoe. After 17 years of working with his family, Jim’s first venture out on his own was Fresco Pizza Grill in Newtown Square, PA.  For Jim, it seemed natural to open a second location for Rize in West Chester.
“My father’s first pizza shop was in West Chester on Five Points Road,” he said. “So when we were looking for other locations, it was a little like fate to be brought to the borough again. People say everything happens for a reason… Julia’s a great partner,” Jim continued, “You need that collaboration with the marketing and sales aspect. This way, I can focus more on my craft. I’ve always loved it, it’s sentimental for me growing up in the pizza business.”
We loved the atmosphere at Rize’s West Chester location. The restaurant is larger than the Broomall location with waitress service (and yes its byob). Slices rotate daily and new creations are also added. We tried the popular Ivory Pizza topped with melted fontina, fresh mozzarella, asiago, truffle oil, roasted garlic, cracked black pepper and sea salt. This cheesy slice is perfect comfort food during the cold winter. We also loved the Green Dream Pizza topped with baby spinach, roasted peppers, gouda, fresh mozzarella, roasted garlic, and drizzled with fig balsamic glaze. Some new daily special slices include Zucchini with asparagus lemon and garlic herb spread, Tomato pie with house-made ricotta cheese, sea salt, spinach, and tomatoes. They’re even serving a special Brussels sprouts pizza.
And make sure to grab an order of the Fancy Frize because their massive portion is great for sharing. These fries are sprinkled with Romano and Asiago cheese, truffle oil, and sea salt. New to the menu are the Avocado Spring Rolls filled with avocado, tomatoes, red onion, cilantro and lime wrapped in a spring roll served with a soy ginger dipping sauce. Philadelphia cheesesteak lovers will also enjoy the Rib-eye Spring Rolls stuffed with rib-eye steak, caramelized onions, sharp white cheese wrapped in a spring roll served with a sriracha mayo dipping sauce. Each come with 4 rolls.
For all your New Years resolutions, Rize also offers organic and local produce in our salads when available. All salad dressings are gluten-free with side portion options for any salad for half the price of the large. The newest menu addition is the Upbeet Salad with arugula, beets, pistachios, cranberries, honey goat cheese, and lemon wedge. And don’t miss the house-made Chocolate Chunk Cookies and baklava for your sweet tooth!
Stop by Rize West Chester for Wine Wednesdays- Call to reserve a spot as each Wednesday night, a local wine creator on location provides a blend of wine that’s made to pair perfectly with your pizza! A free glass of wine with every purchase! Who doesn’t love free wine? And Rize is open for late night slices every Saturday night until 2:30 am so you’ll be able to stop by after your night out. Online ordering is also now offered at Rize West Chester, get 10% off Monday and Tuesday with promo code “rize”.
Rize Pizza As much as we love Philadelphia, we enjoy a little adventure outside the city limits. And believe us when we tell you, …

10 Picks For Local Restaurant Week
It’s the most wonderful time of the year again.  For some, that’s Christmas; for foodies, it’s trying a variety of delicious items for a set price.  Yes, Local Restaurant Week is upon us, and we couldn’t be more excited about the wonderful selection!  From new and interesting items, to classics with great drink specials, here are a few of our picks this year!
Coco, 888 Main Street, Buffalo, NY 14202 Hours: Monday-Thursday 11AM-10PM, Friday 11AM-11PM, Saturday 5-11PM, Sunday 4:30-9PM
Coco is offering a 3 course meal for only, you guessed it, $20.17. The first course for most consists of garden salads, but not at Coco.  You can choose from items like fried brie or sweet pea and pistachio arancini before moving on to their grilled shrimp with creamy manchego polenta or their cassoulet filled with hearty white bean ragout, rich duck sausage, slow roasted pork, pork tenderloin, and a walnut-sage crumb topping just to name a few. Top it all off with the third course, dessert! I say go for the popcorn crunch sundae for a mix of textures and flavors that will leave you wanting more.
Hamburg Brewing Company, 6553 Boston State Road, Hamburg, NY 14075 Hours: Monday-Tuesday 3-10PM, Wednesday-Saturday 12-10PM, Sunday 12-8PM
You get a beer with this deal. I repeat, you get beer! For the small price of $20.17 you’ll get a pint of beer, your choice of sandwich, and a 64oz. growler fill! As if the growler fill wasn’t a cool enough feature, the selection of sandwiches doesn’t disappoint either. Choose from the beef on weck, the salty prosciutto & goat cheese, or caprese.  I’m not a big fan of the upcharge trends, but I’ll admit, some deals are worth it. For $30.17, you can swap the sandwich for a pizza and you’ll receive one brewery tour voucher, along with the beer and growler fill.
Hertel Avenue Poutine and Cream, 1488 Hertel Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14216 Hours: Sunday-Wednesday 11:30AM-10PM, Thursday 11:30AM-11PM, Friday 11:30AM-11PM, Saturday 11:30AM-11PM
Is there anything better than savory, salty and sweet combos? For $20.17 you can taste two small poutine dishes before enjoying two small scoops of their ice cream, or you can pay $30.17 for three small poutine dishes and three small scoops of their ice cream.  There’s a long list of poutine flavors to choose from like pierogi four cheese, baked potato, general tao, nacho, and more!
Kennedy’s Cove, 9800 Main Street, Clarence, NY 14031 Hours: Monday-Saturday 4PM-10PM and Sunday 3PM-8PM
I’m picky when it comes to steak, and Kennedy’s Cove doesn’t get enough recognition for their tasty cuts at reasonable prices.  The meal for $20.17 includes a baked potato or french fries, soup or salad then your choice of an entree.  The entrees include an 8 oz. filet mignon, a 12 oz. strip steak, or an 8 oz. salmon fillet. Excellent prices for a steakhouse and how can you complain about those portions! You can also get the dinner for two for $50.17.  This includes the baked potatoes or french fries, soups or salads, any two entrées, and two glasses of house wine.
Local Kitchen and Beer Bar, 88 W. Chippewa Street, Buffalo, NY 14202 Hours: Monday-Tuesday 4PM-10PM, Wednesday 4PM-11PM, Thursday-Saturday 4PM-11PM
For just $20.17 at Local, you can choose one app or one dessert with one entrée. Choose from fun appetizers like the queen city oysters (chicken wing dip stuffed fried hash potato balls rolled in crunchy city crust and locals’ remoulade) or the weck rolls (think beef on weck in egg roll form). There are a variety of entrees to choose from like the Busters’ bolognese made with tender bison and ricotta or the harvest quinoa made with maple quinoa pilaf tossed with apples, sweet potato chunks, craisins, onions, walnuts, and grilled chicken.  If you go the sweet route, try the pumpkin cheesecake or the dolce crepe!  Their $30.17 offer is a wonderful deal, too.  You can get a juicy, grilled 14 oz ribeye steak served with grilled veg and golden smashed potatoes.
Mangia Ristorante & Caffe, 4264 N. Buffalo Road, Orchard Park, NY 14127 Hours: Monday-Thursday 11AM-10PM and Friday-Saturday 11AM-11PM
Mangia has been a long time favorite of mine, especially during the colder months, due to their lasagna.  Their food is phenomenal! During Restaurant Week, all bottled house wines are $20.17 and for that price, you can also get a 3 course meal.  You’ll receive a salad, your choice of entree (yes, their original lasagna is an option and I highly recommend it), and a house made cannoli for dessert. Not a big lasagna fan? There’s a chicken dish, a fish dish, and another pasta dish to choose from!
Tappo Restaurant, 338 Ellicott Street, Buffalo, NY 14203 Hours: Monday-Wednesday 5PM-10PM, Thursday 4:30PM-10PM, Friday-Saturday 4:30PM-11PM, Sunday 3PM-9PM
Tappo is known around the city for their fantastic wine deal ($16 for any bottle), but are you ready for their Restaurant Week deal? You’ll receive not one, but two entrées and a bottle of wine for $20.17. Yeah, you read that right! Their entree selection includes some of their popular menu items like their chicken milanese which consists of breaded, fried chicken cutlets with a spinach and arugula salad loaded with shallots, pickled cherry tomatoes, and orange with a lemon gastrique (caramelized sugar with a slight vinegar finish). This can be made gluten or dairy free if needed! You can also go with my personal favorite, their eggplant parmesan made with crispy, fried eggplant topped ricotta & mozzarella cheeses and baked.  This dish is served with spaghetti and their traditional red sauce! Add two tossed salads or a cheese board to share for just $10 more.
This Little Pig, 4401 Transit Road, Williamsville, NY 14221 Hours: Tuesday-Thursday 11AM-9PM, Friday 11AM-10PM, Saturday 4PM-10PM, Sunday 10AM-2PM
The new kid on the block is already mixing things up a bit by stepping away from dinner and highlighting their tasty brunch menu!  Anywhere I can get a Bloody Mary as part of the deal is a winner in my book.  You can choose from a variety of entrees and an extra for $20.17. You’ll also get a complimentary breakfast bread basket for your table to hold you over until your food comes. The entrees include salads like their chopped avocado BLT salad with lettuce, diced tomato, cucumber, crispy bacon, croutons, drizzled with an avocado dressing, pizzas like their Mexican breakfast pizza with egg, stuffed pepper, chorizo, hot and sweet pepper, smoked jalapeño sauce, caramelized onion, smoked mozzarella and cotija cheese, cilantro, radish, and cucumber-avocado salad, and many others!  The extras aren’t super boring like toast.  That list includes items like mimosas, wine, cheesy grits, thick-cut bacon,  mac and cheese, and more.
Webster’s Bistro & Bar, 102 Webster Street, North Tonawanda, NY 14120 Hours: Monday-Thursday 4:30PM-9PM and Friday-Saturday 4:30PM-10PM
Webster’s is by far my favorite French restaurant.  Not only am I always impressed with the food, but you can’t compete with their extremely fair pricing. For restaurant week, you can choose two courses for $20.17, three courses with glass of house wine or beer for $30.17, or all four courses with glass of house wine or beer for $40.17.  Courses include their roasted pumpkin and house sausage soup, salads, entrees like their seared duck breast with spiced beet puree with ginger and sage roasted brussel sprouts with caramelized onions, and the Profiterole for dessert (pâte à choux puff, aka their cream puff with vanilla cream, chocolate sauce and fruit).  If the duck wouldn’t be your first pick, there’s a steak dish, a salmon dish, and a chicken dish available.
Chocolate Bar, 114 W. Chippewa Street, Buffalo, NY 14202 Hours: Monday-Wednesday 11AM-10:30PM, Thursday-Saturday 11AM-12AM, Sunday 4-10:30PM
With new restaurants appearing what seems to be weekly, we need to remember not to forget about the classics.  Chocolate Bar has a wonderful deal featuring 3 courses for $20.17.  You can choose a soup or salad for your first course, an entree, and a dessert.  The entrees include their filet mignon served with roasted potatoes and asparagus, their famous chicken and waffles made with their fried chicken breast and malt battered waffles, mascarpone cheese, honey, berries, & candied pecans, and more like pasta and fresh seafood. I highly recommend topping off your meal with their crème brulee. They’re also offering $5 glasses of wine and $18.95 for a bottle,in addition to the food specials!

As much as we enjoy indulging, its always a relief to have the option to truly eat well. We recently drove out to the King of Prussia Mall to check out the new True Food Kitchen, the seasonally inspired health-driven restaurant. Co-founded by integrative medicine expert Dr. Andrew Weil and eight-time James Beard Award nominee for Restaurateur of the Year Sam Fox, the restaurant’s progressive and flavor-forward menu is rooted in the principles of Dr. Weil’s anti-inflammatory diet.
Executive Chef Benjamin Amerling leads the King of Prussia culinary and kitchen team, working closely with Dr. Weil to develop nutrient-rich, seasonally driven items, salads, healthful sandwiches, entrees and antioxidant-packed desserts which cater to all diners with a variety of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan offerings. Open daily for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, True Food Kitchen offers a rotating menu that regularly allows guests to experience great-tasting ingredients and produce. Reservations can be made via OpenTable.
True Food Kitchen at King of Prussia Mall features a lively dining room with 215 seats and an open kitchen designed to bring guests closer to the restaurant’s culinary craft. A small outdoor covered patio will seat approximately 68 guests in season. Indoors, natural woods and vibrant, locally inspired artwork add a contemporary touch to the earthy color scheme, natural elements and greenery, including indoor / outdoor garden basins filled with fresh herbs and spices. Eco-friendly materials are utilized throughout the restaurant, such as the hardwood floors, which are made of reclaimed wood and dining chairs made of recycled soda bottles.
The new Fall menu allows guests the opportunity to experience great tasting menu items featuring the season’s ripest ingredients and produce at the peak of their freshness. Grab a drink from the restaurant’s scratch bar which is brimming with freshly pressed juice, including the Carrot & Turmeric Tonic for Fall and Pressed Apple Soda natural refreshers, plus local beer, wine and seasonal handcrafted cocktail like the Orchard Bourbon Sour.
We began out meal with the new Roasted Heirloom Carrot starter featuring zahtar spiced carrrots sprinkled with crushed pistachios over a greek yogurt and dill sauce. The new Winter Squash Toast was also a big hit topped with crispy brussels sprouts, caramelized onions, lemon, saba and hazelnut. If you’re looking for something simple, we’d recommend the Farmers Market Crudités which is a massive bowl of chilled raw seasonal vegetables served with a side of tzatziki and black olive dip. This dish is definitely recommend to share. The Kale Guacamole with pink grapefruit, cilantro, roasted poblano,  sprinkled with sunflower seeds and served pita chips is also a fun twist on a classic dish.
We love that True Food Kitchen has a large assortment on small plates so that you don’t have to commit to one dish. The Wild Caught Albacore Tataki is light and refreshing, while also being gluten free, made with avocado, jalapeño, toasted sesame, and yuzu ponzu. And the Edamame Dumplings are one of the most popular vegetarian plates with dashi broth, white truffle oil, and sprinkled with Asian herbs.
Filling salad portions at True Food Kitchen easily make them a meal. The new Autumn Ingredient Salad is a beautiful blend of fall produce including brussels sprouts, butternut squash, cauliflower, white bean, pomegranate, toasted mulberry, and served with a horseradish vinaigrette. We love the Grilled Chicken Salad loaded up with medjool dates, dried cranberry, jicama, apple, manchego, farro, marcona almond, and a champagne vinaigrette dressing.
Pizza lovers will enjoy the new Fall vegan Butternut Squash Pizza, featuring smoked onion, organic kale, vegan almond ricotta and dried cranberry. We loved the Brussels Sprout & Wild Mushroom Pizza topped with taleggio, garlic and grana padano. Because we can’t resist a cheesy white pie with vegetables on top.
Lest us forget there are many delightful main dishes at True Food Kitchen. If you like it hot, then you can’t miss the gluten-free Spicy Panang Curry with organic potato, long bean, bok choy, carrot, thai basil, and coconut shrimp broth. It definitely has an authentic Thai kick! We also enjoy the Asian flavors in the Sustainable Seabass with broccolini, sugar snap pea, roasted mushroom, ancient grains, and umami sauce.
The Grilled Salmon is new for Fall, served alongside smoked onion farro, arugula, roasted beet, and with a cilantro pumpkin seed pesto. The Poke Bowl is another lighter entree option, similar to the Wild Caught Albacore Tataki starter, made with wild caught albacore, avocado, quinoa rice, mushroom, snow pea, cucumber, cashew, and served with turmeric ponzu.
Make sure to save at least a little room for dessert! The nutrient-packed Squash Pie dessert new to the Fall menu is True Food Kitchen’s spin on the standard pumpkin pie featuring a gluten free and vegan graham crust and coconut whipped cream. Chocolate lovers and those who enjoy gluten-free dining should try the Flourless Chocolate Cake with caramel, vanilla ice cream, and cocoa nibs.
Next time we’ll be sure to try the vegan and gluten-free Chia Seed Pudding made with banana, and toasted coconut. And the most unique dessert on the menu is probably the Sea Buckthorn Sorbet with luxardo cherry. This vegan and gluten-free sorbet is a truly sublime balance between tart and sweet, similar in flavor to that of dried apricots.
