8. Persistent Fever
Part 1 | Part 2
With the drain in, Finn’s obs came up to a more acceptable level, the sedation they’d given him helping to keep him settled whilst they did it. With that sorted, they’d let Fao clean and even close the cuts to his head, talking softly to his brother as he did it all. He knew they’d bent the rules for him to let him do that, but he appreciated it. It certainly helped Finn out, and the nurse commented that he’d not been that settled or content.
They’d got him a place on ICU, and soon enough he was taken up there. Fao followed wearily, feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. Finn was still very sick, that much was obvious. He knew ICU was the best place for him, but it was still worrying. Nobody wanted their brother in intensive care. Fao was worried about his seizures, too, but they said Steve would see him whilst he was admitted to try and control them.
His fever was the most worrying, seeming to not get any better even with all of their treatments. It would take time, but for the moment, it was less than ideal.
Steve appeared after a while, Finn’s case perplexing him. The discussion he'd had with the ED hadn't shed any more light on it, but the scans hadn't shown anything he was too concerned with. Of course there was the matter of his infection, the antibiotics he'd already been on apparently having done nothing. The chest drain was a necessary evil, but Steve couldn't help the worry about it and his seizures. Finn wouldn't be conscious, of course, but it wouldn't be pleasant for him to pull it out.
Fao had settled at Finn’s bedside, exhausted from a long night and not a lot of sleep. He’d ended up resting his head on the bedrails, just to close his eyes for five minutes. At least he’d still be close to Finn, able to settle him if needed, or speak to the staff if they needed anything.
Steve sighed as he saw the brothers, reminded of their first meeting so many years ago. He cleared his throat gently. "Knock knock."
Fao lifted his head, hair falling in his eyes. “Oh, Steve. Sorry, wasn’t asleep, I swear.”
"You don't need to apologise." He said with a smile. "You deserve the rest. How are you getting on?"
“Ah, y’know. Glad he’s got a bed now.”
"Yeah, of course."
“He’s settled now, at least.”
"He's had some sedation, hasn't he?'
Fao nodded. “And he’s finally stopped fighting it.”
"Bless him. I'd got a bed organised for him for the morning, your mum had said he was starting to struggle with absences and the paracetamol wasn't helping with his fever."
“When she called me tonight I assumed it was the big seizure we’ve all seen coming, but of course he had to be different.”
"Of course, it is finn, after all."
“Never a dull moment.” Fao said drily.
"That's very true."
“I suppose he couldn’t let me have all the fun.”
"You and Harrison caused enough stress, I don’t need him joining in, and I bet She and Fred don't either." Steve managed to joke.
“How is Harrison?” He asked. “Haven’t spoken to him in a little while.”
Steve's smile grew forced. "He's getting there. He's struggling a little with everything, but you know what that’s like."
“All too well. I’ll text him.” Fao said. “I’m guessing you’ve come to see Finn, I’ll stop distracting you.”
"Came to see both of you." He said softly. "There's not much neuro-wise I can do at the moment."
“Both of us? I hope I don’t need a neurosurgeon.” Fao joked weakly.
"I'm not on the market for more patients." Steve joked back.
“Good.” He murmured. “I’m good with my head intact, thanks.”
"Though I'm sure Sheila would be surprised to find you did have a brain." He teased, moving to Finn’s side. "Finn? Just Steve, you're okay."
Finn gave a groan, taking a moment to manage to open his eyes. He finally focused on Steve, gave a grunt in acknowledgement, and then rested his head back down.
Fao reached across to squeeze Finn’s hand. “Steve’s checking up on you, eh?”
"It's a stupid question, I know, but how are you feeling?"
Finn made a noise, his voice muffled by the mask. "Tired."
Fao huffed a laugh. “You and me both, kid.”
"I don't blame either of you."Steve said. "Aside from tired? Any pain?"
"No." Finn shook his head. "Fuzzy."
"Like before seizure fuzzy, or after fuzzy?"
That was too much effort. "Both."
Fao couldn’t help but smile. “Always helpful, Finn.”
"How many have you had now?" Steve murmured, looking through the notes. "Right, I'll ask them to keep an eye on it, I'll change the lorazepam to immediately if he does. What's the valproate doing? Hmm, I'll add that too, his other levels are good, that's fine."
Steve trailed off, making a few notes before returning his attention back to the brothers. "Right, a bit of a plan for you two. They're gonna keep the sedation going anyway, make that a bit more comfortable for you, Finn. I'll increase your normal meds, the new one we're trying, and that should help keep them away. If you do have a seizure, we've got that management plan in place and ready. I've written you up for more pain relief too, so just ask. You don't have to wait until if you have a seizure."
It was too much for Finn to pay attention, but he nodded all the same. "'Kay."
“Thank you, Steve.” Fao said, taking it all in.
"Is there anything else you need from me? Or want me to do?" He asked gently.
“No, no.” Fao murmured. “Other than tell the staff I’m a doctor that works here, none of them recognise me.” He couldn’t help the little laugh. “And obviously just keep looking after Finn.”
"I saw you'd managed to sort his lacs out, you did a good job." Steve said. "I'll make sure to let them know."
“They were great in ED.”
"I'm glad." He gave him a genuine smile. "I'll pop back later, see how the two of you are getting on."
“Thanks, means a lot.”
He hesitated before he left. "Hars wouldn't mind a text, and you're always welcome at ours."
“I’ll text him. Gotta keep myself entertained whilst sleeping beauty gets his rest.”
"Of course." He laughed. "Take care."
“And you.” Fao murmured, turning his attention back to Finn.
Finn gave a grunt in acknowledgement that Steve had left, already mainly asleep. He struggled to get comfortable, tossing his head in frustration.
“Here, let me help.” Fao said, standing up to fuss with Finn’s pillows.
He caught Fao's eye as he helped, frustrated and tired and feeling rubbish. Fao fixed the problem though, and that earned a sigh in content, one thing less to complain about.
With the pillows fixed, Fao moved to stroke through Finn’s hair, leaning over the bed to press a kiss to his forehead. He was still absolutely burning up, despite everything they’d done, and his hair was damp with sweat. He wasn’t quite as aggressive and delirious as he had been, but he certainly wasn’t well, and it seemed like everything they were doing wasn’t doing enough.
Biting his lip, he sat back down, worry churning in his stomach. He kept his hand in Finn’s once he was settled, lifting it to press a kiss to his knuckles.
“Love you, Finn. Don’t do anything stupid, please. Let’s get rid of this fever, it’s not doing you any good at all.”

And, listen, I don't really talk about it because personally it didn't read as romantic to me but I am a believer in the beliefs of SagaCasey shippers. Like, they're just fucking right about this one, and I love nothing so much as Saga ripping Casey out of Alan's hands, in no uncertain terms telling him fuck you, he's mine, you can't have him. That is, in fact, the only way for me to read the text. Casey is Saga's partner. It doesn't matter what the story thinks, his belonging to her is unconditional.

I remember being so distraught when we thought Hirotsu and Gin died, and then when it's revealed that Tachihara was the perpetrator, i was literally like "nvm theyre fine. That's his family, he wouldn't kill them no matter what" and i was right.

I love that we're getting focus on Chris Rodriguez early in the TV show, so that we have time to get invested in him before he a) betrays the camp and b) is driven so insane that only Dionysus can cure him. Knowing him beforehand will also make his relationship with Clarrisse, friendship and romance, feel more interesting.
What other cool, fun, not-heartbreaking characters will the show give more attention and depth? Silena Beauregarde? Charlie Beckendorf? Micheal Yew? Castor and Pollux? I can't wait!
#can you imagine the gut punch of having castor and pollux be recurring minor characters#always together#the classic either very similar or very different twins trope#with jokes about dionysus being their dad and more insight into that awkward relationship#that's their shtick like the stoll brothers except the comedy premise is 'mr d is their dad' which really does write itself#they're well-established as both part of the camp's normal and one of those 'two-in-one' side character duos#then after over three seasons of this castor dies in battle#and we don't see the death but when we next see pollux castor just. isn't there#and we Know#only one thing could have separated those two and it looks like pollux is missing at least an arm (and hurts accordingly)#and when we next see dionysus he's exactly as broken as a father who's lost a son would be#so different from how we've seen any other god emote about their children#and it sinks in that he actually was present in castor's life for years and now that's gone#it isn't 'well the view from olympus is different now and my name is stained with failure. drat' but the weight of#'he won't sit at my table tomorrow' 'he will never play pinocle with me again even though it bores him because he secretly likes me'#and so on and on and on forever#because he's never coming back. we will never see castor AND pollux again#enjoy your fantasy series kids! war is worse than hell because it hurts the undeserving!#pjo tv show#pjo tv series#pjo disney+#percy jackon and the olympians#percy jackson#pjo

Masters of the Air evidently suffers from a case of "sea of identical white dudes" syndrome, but that's most of the HBO WWII stuff let's be real.
Band of Brothers had a handful of gingers for flavour, a couple of identifiable Big 'Ol Boys, Guarnere's jaw, Roe's big pleading eyes, and David Schwimmer. The Pacific at least had Rami Malek.

anakin's close relationship with the clones and its greater significance
Tumblr media
Anakin has an especially close relationship with the clones, but even more importantly the clones deeply respect, stand-up for, stand by, and rep Anakin specifically.
It is mentioned numerous times that the clones have a special respect and high regard for Anakin, General Skywalker, way over and above any of the other Jedi generals (including Obi-wan). They would gladly die fighting beside him.
Of course, it is obvious that Anakin deeply respects them as autonomous beings with individual names and personalities based on his past as a slave. no, he doesn't want your number, what is your name soldier?
How many times on Tatooine was Anakin himself called a label, a derogatory slur, or a number? How many times did he have to watch his mother be spit at, derided, abused? The mother of the Chosen One, a slave helpless to their cruelty and disregard. What is your name soldier?
The clones are "mortal" mirrors of himself as the demi-god Chosen One. They have no true parents (the Force is Anakin's 'father'), they were not created to have free will (Anakin has a prophecy and destiny as much as they have inhibitor chips), they were not created to love or be loved lest it interfere with their duty (the Clones were engineered to be averse to relationships and family, just as Anakin is counseled to avoid Attachments), and lastly, they are missing parental figures which makes them eager for approval and validation.
They just get each other. What is your name, soldier?
I'm a person and my name is Anakin.
For a long time I was confused by why Anakin would agree to fight alongside the Clones at all, and wouldn't stand up for them, pointing out to the Jedi that the Republic's creation of them to serve & die with no real choice otherwise (chips) is tantamount to slavery in its own manner, but then I realized... it is because Anakin truly never leaves the servant's mindset, either.
And also because he believes, genuinely, in serving the Good like they do. They have lived lives of servitude, were born into it - so it is simply having the choice of which cause to serve that seems like beautiful freedom. And they Choose to serve the good - the Republic for the clones, the Jedi for Anakin.
When confronted by the slaver queen in TCW Anakin heartwarmingly repeats that same sentiment - he feels he is not enslaved to the Jedi because he sees them as a moral responsibility, not a condition of servitude.
It can be argued, however, that Anakin never knew true freedom as a child and became accustomed to the support system and rules of the Jedi, despite having his own ideas that went way outside the Code. Ideas he would never have an opportunity to express, by no choice of his own - unless the he left the Order. Something next to impossible as his only post-slavery home, his only family in the Galaxy. His guiding light. A difficult situation.
The Jedi attempted to do good with Anakin, but as a former slave and Chosen One demi-god, they definitely missed the mark on some of his core needs.
Regarding the clones, all Anakin knows is to love and respect his brothers, especially those he sees as very much his equals in standing in the world. He sees the Republic Army doing for clones what the Jedi Order did for him: at the same time as they are still serving, they are rising in the ranks of public esteem in a way unforseen for them (Anakin may have never escape slavery but for the Jedi, the Clones wouldn't exist without the Senate). And one day, if they serve admirably enough, they will be free to choose their owns paths (after the war for the Clones, and when he becomes a Master at last for Anakin).
Anakin can never truly think of "escape" for himself or the clones in any other way. He has literally never known any other existence. And he hasn't gotten there yet - hasn't had the time as a young man to hash out those higher concepts of freedom. This inexperience and arguably innocent mindset is manipulated by Palpatine. It is used against him to turn Anakin into the slave Vader.
It is one of the reasons the just-born Vader goes so wild with the thought of Ultimate Power - he has never had any before. The thought of being in control of destiny, his destiny, is dizzying to him and he begs Padme to join him. although of course this fever dream is short-lived.
It is left to the mind of the viewer to wonder if Anakin could have been talked down here with a better approach. The inclusion of R2D2 in this scene on Mustafar shows Anakin was still present on the volcanic planet, his last vestiges battling against the surging Vader who was baptized in the dark disorienting power of Order 66. It is why he dropped Padme to the ground when confronted -certain she still lived - "She was alive, I felt it!" It is the reason why he crawled to Obi-wan while burning with his golden hand, the remnants of Anakin were still there.
Vader is 100% a slave and totally compliant to Sidious' will - or will face certain death. His actions are evil, of course, but he is nonetheless a complete slave - mentally, physically, and psychologically.
He is used as an attack dog on select missions and otherwise kept chained up in his personal hells. He is physically immobile without his suit, yet his suit is literally designed to be a torture device. He is much like an imprisoned circus animal that is stabbed and prodded to engender its anger and defensiveness for a circus act where the lion tamer is seen as all-powerful. Smoke and Mirrors and he is a prop. A slave. A memory.
Vader is deformed and deconstructed and reconstructed for maximum discomfort and dependency. This is to ensure he cannot and will not think outside his chains and will be totally preoccupied by his suffering, engendered by his anger. Obi-wan, in these years, is in a way his only relief and outlet.
But even in OWK he cannot bear to keep Obi-wan as a prisoner. As a life-long prisoner of various varieties himself (both of outer and inner design) he cannot bear to see Obi-wan suffer as a slave to his guilt and anguish.
So what does Anakin do the first time he is ever the Master of someone's direct individual pain with no manipulations upon him? What does he do when he has total control of Obi-wan's broken heart and suffering? The Master last?
He frees him.
He frees Obi-wan, immediately.
In that moment his prime ego surfaces and takes the blame for his alter ego Vader, shoulders the responsibility for him, and lets his only distraction (Obi-wan) from this agony go free. Of course, in the next scene Vader is livid and frothing at this, telling Sidious he'll stop at nothing to find Kenobi. but Anakin, lost inside again, freed him before Sidious or Vader could stop him.
This brings me to another important point about the clones and Anakin and the Force at large.
Essentially the Republic and Separatists are fighting a proxy war with no "real" citizen casualities or troops using the droids and clones. This exactly mirrors the spiritual proxy war for the Galaxy's soul that is being enacted on a microcosmic scale through the prophesized Chosen One - Anakin Skywalker.
The Force ("God")is fighting a cosmic holy war within Anakin against Sidious ("The Devil") using the soul of one person as a representation of All.
Of course, the Force created Anakin as its Champion and thus Anakin is inherently good. The question at hand is... is Anakin(the Force) strong enough to withstand his predestined fall and return? To survive under the Evil of the Sith? Basically: is the Force ("God") stronger than Sidious ("The Devil")?
As we know, Sidious, in all his hubris, was unable to keep Anakin enslaved through Vader in the end. Anakin was resurrected - return of the Jedi.
This is another important parallel with Anakin re: the Clones. The Clones in their physical proxy war represent the same thing Anakin represents in his spiritual proxy war which he is fighting as a demi-god with a destiny.
The are literally the same.
The fact that Anakin was so friendly and respectful of the clones and that they absolutely loved him in return is proof they are both morally "good" centered. They are both representations of Good sabotaged by Evil (Sidious manipulating Anakin and corrupting the chips in the clones).
Tumblr media
Is it no surpise that they are both broken by Sidious on the same night, at the same time, during Operation Knightfall and both march into the temple together to enact Order 66. They, both forces of good, were tools for Sidious to corrupt.
Another bit of support for this is in the comics. A clone soldier (a stormtrooper) is one of the only ppl Vader ever reveals he was Anakin Skywalker to. While the soldier is dying, Vader reveals his true prime ego and identity.
The soldier was (if I remember correctly) talking about his admiration for the Jedi general Anakin beforehand, and how much he loved serving under him.
As he lays dying, Anakin breaks through Vader with his compassion, seeking to bring comfort to the clone in his last moments - telling him his identity so that he will in some small way gain peace knowing he is still serving and dying under "Skywalker".
The clone responds he always knew that, based off Vader's fighting and leadership style, and they are both left in that moment realizing how they are both in an unwinnable situation within the Empire.
Anakin is left to ponder how these good men he so loved are still following him, still fighting, loyally, and what that means for him trapped within Vader after all these years.
Maybe he, Anakin, should keep fighting too.
like his brothers.

21. "But if you stay, you'll get sick too"
Part 1 | Part 2
As much as Fao hated to admit it, his mum had been right. He’d woken up the morning after his game feeling shit, and he’d definitely not drunk enough to be hungover. His throat was like he’d swallowed glass, he was sniffly, and he had a proper dry cough. He felt awful. They’d stayed in his flat that night, to go home that morning, and though he felt guilty he definitely wanted to be home with his family rather than by himself. Even though Sheila fussed, he liked it when it meant he got food and endless cups of tea.
Once they’d got home, he’d flopped onto his bed, feeling utterly miserable to say the least. The cat had joined him, which was nice, the tabby curled up next to him, purring away. He hated it, feeling guilty for bringing it home, but also for ruining their time together. They were supposed to do stuff, spend time as a family whilst he was home for the weekend, and now he’d ruined it by getting ill.
While everyone had their own things to do, they'd planned going out in the early afternoon. Sheila had seen the state of Fao, and knew he was coming down with a cold. As much as she knew it was just an old wives tale, she couldn't help but wish he'd listened and worn his coat.
She made them both a cup of tea, grabbed a load of snacks, and dropped the bombshell on Fred that he was alone with Finn for the rest of the day. Neither of them minded, and she was slightly concerned at the excitement and mischief on both their faces, but Fred was an adult. And Finn knew how to call them when things went wrong. She bundled them out of the house, the peace and quiet immediately so much better, and headed to Fao's room.
"Fao? Sweetheart?"
He lifted his head. “Mm?”
"Can I come in?"
“Yeah.” He murmured. “But not to say ‘I told you so’.”
She grinned at him. "I don't need to. You've already said it."
“Was getting ill before.” He pointed out. “At least Pollo is giving me sympathy.”
"Hey, I've brought you tea and snacks, I'm being nice." She protested. "Shove over, let me on the bed."
“You should’ve led with that.” He said, gathering the cat up in his arms to shift over and give her room.
"Ah, but that would have been too nice." She teased, settling next to him. "Have you had any paracetamol?"
“Had some earlier.” He murmured.
"Not time for any yet?"
“No, not yet.”
"Alright. Want to put a film on?"
“Mm, dunno.”
"Are you going back to sleep?" She asked gently, reaching to stroke through his hair.
He sniffed. “Snacks?”
"Got plenty."
“Like what?”
"I've got crackers, crisps, chocolate - don't tell Fred, I got his good stuff, and the fruit salad he made for us yesterday."
“Mm, chocolate.” Fred always had the best stuff, and he was rubbish at hiding it.
She passed him the bar. "And we've got the place to ourselves. Fred's taken Finn out."
“Oh? Thought it was quiet.”
"Thought you might appreciate a bit of peace."
“You should’ve gone too. I’ll get you sick.”
"I couldn't have left you all alone."
“I live alone, mum.”
"Not when you're here."
“Still. I’d be okay.”
"Are you trying to politely kick meout?"
“I don’t want you to get sick too.”
"I don't mind."
“You won’t be able to go to work.”
"We'll just stay in together."
“Mm, still.”
"I'm not going to leave just because of a few gems. You'll have already given it to Finn, no doubt. I might as well get it over with now."
“I tried to be careful around Finn.” Fao said. “But he wriggled his way into my bed anyway.”
"You could lock the door, tie him up, and you'd still end up with a Finn in your bed."
“Exactly.”
"I know you're careful with Finn." She murmured softly.
“As careful as I can be. He really enjoyed last night.” He murmured, his voice croaky.
"I know." She smiled fondly. "He's not shut up about it all morning."
Fao smiled. “Of course.”
"He wants to go out properly with you next time."
“Not so sure about that one.”
"Me neither. Said maybe when he was older."
“Yeah, maybe.” He sighed, eating a square of chocolate.
"Though I couldn't imagine it would be a good idea."
“He’s clumsy enough without alcohol.”
"That's very true."
After a moment, Fao shifted to cuddle up to her, his arm over her waist. He was feeling miserable, and she always made it better.
She smiled, waiting for him to settle. She reached to rub his back, drawing soothing shapes across his top. "Better?"
“Yeah, better.”
She pressed a kiss to his hair. "You gonna go to sleep?"
“Can’t sleep.”
"That's okay."
“I’m sorry if I get you ill.”
"It's part of life."
“Still.”
"I know."
It was nice, the way she traced shapes on his back. He’d finished the chocolate, and it had made him feel a little less miserable, at least. He sniffed again, his throat still sore, and let himself relax into her. Despite saying he couldn’t sleep, he soon found himself drifting, unable to stop it.

Actually another thing that gets me about that first meeting with Alistair is that the mage accuses him of harassment and Alistair is basically like "Riiiiiiiight, I'm harassing you by delivering a message" all sarcastic-like... and then basically the second the mage leaves admits it was in fact harassment. That was why he was sent and he knows it. He openly admits it as soon as the mage who correctly called him out on it is out of earshot. And you do not get to respond to that. I feel like Surana/Amell at least might want to say something about that! He could've said "Look, I'm sorry, the Chantry is doing this to harass you and we both know it, but it was either me or an actual Templar" or something along those lines because again he knows that this is intended to be harassment, but instead he snarkily denies it only to admit to it as soon as the guy leaves. The more I think about it the worse of a first impression for Surana/Amell this becomes, but the game just does not allow you to engage with it. It's infuriating.

I need more content of Tim's jealousy when other siblings come in and become close to Dick. Like every time someone says Damian is Dick's favorite it hurts my heart a little cause I know how Tim would feel.
It's one thing for a younger sibling to grow up with you, cause like at least then you all have your defined roles and it's like what you know so you aren't stepping on one another's toes, but like it's something completely else to have a sibling who is already grown up come into the family and become siblings with your sibling.
It is just like that longing feeling when you see them together and like they haven't known each other as long yet they seem closer to your sibling than you are, and everyone knows they are the favorite and you are just like how do they get along so well with so little effort.
I need more Tim and Dick content like this. The boy went from being Dick's only sibling still around (aka no competition for being brothers and nothing to compare it to) to being like 1 of 5 of dick's siblings, and I know this also goes in reverse where the newer sibling is jealous of the older two siblings for already having the established bond, but I dont see enough of Tim having bitter envy of how close Damian and Dick are despite not knowing each other as long, like you want angsty relationships DC, show me this instead of just everyone trying to kill Tim, show me silent envy that grows more and more as it slowly decays a sibling relationship instead of like a weird ritual where if you wanna be apart of the family you have to attempt to kill tim
#sometimes i just need angsty tim#not tim getting targeted by siblings or tim getting annoyed at siblings#just Tim who finally became brothers with his idol and hero and formed a relationship with having to watch as it goes from their small#contained group of dick tim Bruce and babs where tim is like the best brother dick has got to everyone especially damian coming in#and tim feeling crowded out and jealous as damian and dick become closer than tim and dick ever were and tim slowly pulls away#and at first dick not even noticing and tim feeling guilty every time a dispute comes up and feeling guilty over how happy he feels when#damian ticks dick off and tim starts throwing himself into other things and flakes/cancels on things he and dick have planned and#finally one time tim and dick are sitting around and tim is like i miss how close we were and dick laughing is like well you're so busy now#and tim is like 'well its not like you need me anyway you have damian and jason and cass and duke and- nevermind' tim cuts himself off#dick is like 'timmy you know im still here for you just like before' and tim is just like 'yeah sure whatever' and heads out and then dick#starts noticing that tim is keeping him at arms length so he keeps trying to connect and he sees how tim keeps getting close with others#but that he refuses to with dick and then the jealousy is both ways and slowly they start to come together again as brothers and things#arent quite the same and probably will never be but they are still brothers and they love each other#but things are complicated when you go from the only sibling to having like 5 siblings and i want that explored more#i want these complex sibling relationships dc. give me this over trying to kill tim. there is more to siblings than the cain instinct.#anyway thats my rant#tim drake#dick grayson#batkids#batfam#bat family#batsiblings
