imagine what the ealdor villagers must have thought of merlin. when he lived there they thought he was a bit odd, probably accident prone, on the outside, bit of a funny guy. he had exactly one friend. all of a sudden he leaves to go to fucking camelot of all places. why? stfu we don't need a why. they think nothing of it and forget about him.

Are you still doing the DVD commentary ask thing? This is one of my favorite scenes from the story, I've always loved how it acknowledged that Arthur really loved Gwen but there was always something between Arthur and Merlin. But I wanted to hear what you were thinking when you wrote it.
Scene:
“As I said, a battle wound,” Arthur told him. “It needs time to heal. Though even when it does, I’m certain I’ll still awaken some mornings expecting Sir Leon to burst into the room with word of an attack. Or one of my Counsel to be waiting for an audience. Or for Guinevere to be here in…”
Merlin flinched before he could catch himself.
Arthur noticed. He began to speak, then hesitated, uncertain.
“You expect Gwen to be here instead of me,” Merlin said, so that Arthur knew he still had a friend to confide in about such things, no matter what the two of them had become to each other.
“Yes,” Arthur said softly.
“Of course you do,” Merlin assured him, ignoring how strange he felt to speak of this while Arthur was stretched out half naked at his side in the royal bed. “Gwen was your wife, sire. Your queen. I’d-“ He swallowed, forced a smile. “I’d never think of trying to take her place. I know I never could.”
Arthur smiled at him, a small thing in the dim daylight that still set a sparkle to his blue eyes. “No, you couldn’t,” he said. “Just as Guinevere never could take yours.”
“As… your servant?”
“No, Merlin,” he drawled out, putting overtones of ‘idiot’ into his name. “Not as my servant.”
“Well what, then?”
Arthur pushed himself up to an elbow, his blond hair mussed and his cheeks pink with the heat of their bed. “I did love Guinevere. As much as I knew how at the time. But you…”
“Me… what?”
Arthur touched Merlin’s face, fingertips sliding down his cheek before tracing his lips. First the top, and then the bottom, and then the top again, all the while watching his own fingers with a wistful smile. “I remember staring at your mouth. From that first day we met. I remember telling myself it was because you had the pretty lips of a girl.”
“I do not have the pretty lips of a girl-”
“You have seen your lips, haven’t you.”
“You’re one to talk. Your mouth is-“
Arthur silenced him with a kiss, right where his fingers had been, before resuming his soft touches. “Do you remember what you said our first night together?”
It was difficult to remember anything at all with Arthur touching him as if he were something precious and rare, whispering as if sharing a secret. “I… No?”
“You said that in hindsight, it was obvious how you felt about me. You just didn’t recognize it for what it was at the time.”
“You mean… you…”
“Yes.”
“Even then?”
“Even then,” Arthur said. “So you see, right from the very start, before any of it, before all of it, your place was here. In my life. In my heart. In my bed. I’ll not hear of you doubting that. Not even for a moment. Do you understand?”
I’d be happy to talk about this scene. :)
Because I like to write in canon, I needed to keep Arthur’s love for Gwen in tact. In Season 5, Gwen’s character representation is all over the place (don’t get me started on the whole Evil Gwen thing), but in Diamond of the Day especially, which I rewatched A LOT, Gwen was smart, brave, and Arthur clearly loved her and respected her with all of his heart.
Merlin’s friendship with Gwen was really downplayed in Season 5, which sucked, but fundamentally she cared for Merlin, and he did for her as well. I also wanted to respect that in my story, especially because it added a nice layer of internal conflict and guilt for Merlin at taking her place.
So in this scene, we have Merlin and Arthur laying naked together in Arthur’s actual bed from Camelot, after they’ve just had sex the first time. As I wrote them finally talking to each other about how they felt, I could feel Gwen’s presence with them.
I wrote the little exchange between the two of them to give Gwen her place as friend and wife and queen to Arthur, and to also settle Merlin’s insecurities about who he is in Arthur’s life. I also wanted to show that Arthur has been doing some reflecting on his life back in Camelot (through his new understanding of his own sexuality), and acknowledge that he actually was attracted to Merlin all that time, only didn’t realize it, just as Merlin hadn’t either.
There are a lot of stories out there with a lot of different takes on Arthur and Gwen. I’ve read a bunch of them, but of them all, the one that I think influenced me the most — and influenced the different way I see Arthur loving Gwen and Arthur loving Merlin — is probably “Lights Go Out, Here I Go Again” by halffizzbin. Just take a look at this beautiful passage from that story:
“Arthur loved Gwen in his other life, of course, with as much of himself as he possibly could—and that was enough, at the time. He misses her, a gentle ache in his heart that eases a little when he thinks about the long life he’s told that she lived when he was gone, ruling well in his absence and surrounded by loyal friends. He’ll love Gwen forever, probably, but.
Merlin is something else. Merlin has always been more than forever (something they’ve already proven by sitting across from each other eating curry right now). Merlin is sunlight and flame and clear, rushing water, too much for Arthur to control and never enough to quench him, and maybe it took Arthur dying for him to realize it but oh, he wants. He wants things he never realized he could have, before, when his life was all planned out for him and his servant still seemed like this wild, unknowable thing even after all those years, beloved and strange and always slipping out of Arthur’s grasp.”

Rewatching Merlin season 4 reminds me just how much I hate Agravane.
I just got up to the Alator episode where Gwaine finds Agravane about to kill Gaius and despite being suspicious just does nothing?!
I get having priorities, Gaius needed medical attention and whatever, but later on he should’ve said something to Merlin or Arthur.
The writers did Gwaine so dirty after he became a knight.
I’ve never been so inclined to start playing fifty two card pick up with every orifice on a man’s face than I am having to watch 13 episodes of that snake skin, oil slick, unwashed shit stain. Why Arthur ever decided to trust Agravane is a mystery to me.
I kinda wish there was some more context there than just “surprise, conveniently evil uncle for all your plot device needs”
I don’t know what I want that context to be, my headcanons are mostly more graphic ways Merlin could’ve killed him in the caves, but there should be something. Like a way to prove himself to Arthur or something he did instead of just showing up out of the blue.
Then again, Morgana turned evil between seasons off camera so I don’t know why I’m expecting much.

Merlin rewatch -- S1E10: The Moment of Truth
Arthur
Arthur was so competent and all-around showing off his future king qualities in this episode it’s perfect.
He was compassionate. He helped Hunith get an audience with the King and promptly went on a solo quest to “ help people regardless of how far away they lived”. A hint of a united Albion in the future right there.
He was a good leader. I like how confident he looked and how quickly he started to give plans the moment he stepped into the village. The villagers trusted him instantly despite Will’s strong opposition. Arthur knew the chances were slim but he did his best. He trained the men, set up traps and sent Matthew who wasn’t good at fighting to do the scouting job. He tried to utilize every single resource he had (except women, but he learned it afterwards).
(btw I really like this outfit for some reason <3)
He also took criticism graciously. He replied gently every time Gwen or Morgana brought up the topic of women’s right to fight and ultimately accepted it. He wasn’t provoked by Will’s insults and complaints wither(he did make an adorably pouty face for a bit but the rest was great XD).
He let Will express his concern and very patiently reasoned with him (more patient than me anyway). He didn't completely dismiss Will's words as well. That's why he lost his confidence for a bit and needed Merlin's nudging.
It's nice that he did have Merlin to confide his insecurity and he trusted Merlin enough to put himself together from Merlin's baseless assurance.
The harsh remark regarding magic in the end actually threw me off a bit. Arthur hadn’t made any negative comment towards magic as far as I can remember. He had been pretty accepting of good magic. Healing in ep3, blue bulb in ep4, druids in ep8. They weren’t even in Camelot. I guess the magical wind did look more dangerous than those, but it still saved their life.

Merlin rewatch, 2x10 : Sweet dreams.
Episode rewatched on the 16th of april 2024
Summary :
Dignitaries from rival kingdoms descend on Camelot for peace talks, but what King Alined really wants is war and he'll do everything in his power to stir up hostilities, even if it means using magic.
Alined's jester Trickler puts a spell on Arthur to make him fall madly in love with rival King Olaf's daughter Vivian. Chaos reigns in the palace and Camelot is once more poised on the brink of war.
Can Merlin free Arthur's heart before the prince loses his head in battle?
Sounds like a crucial piece of information for Arthur's future, as he is supposedly destined to unite Albion.
Alined looks as amiable as a prison door. Funny to see how he treats his servant and compare it to how Arthur treats Merlin. I wish we'd see how Uther treats his own servant but it seems like this character doesn't exist.
That knight handshake cracks me up all the time. Supposing that we don't sneeze or cough into our elbow, this is a very Covid-era like way of saying hello.

Why does the servant's face looks so familiar to me ? He must have acted in something else I've watched.
Vivian quickly revealing herself to be a brat like one of those Upper East side nepo babies from Gossip girl... That's gonna be fun ! I wonder what Georgia remembers from shooting this episode.

And then they laugh. How cute !
I think Vivian is an incredibly interesting character because she serves as a contrast for several character : Guinevere, and Arthur.
Let's not forget that she is acting like a spoiled brat, just like Arthur was when he first met Merlin. He's made some progress since then, and we see that in how he reacts to Vivian's behaviour.
Then, Vivian is a contrast to Guinevere : one is spoilt, demanding and arrogant, the other is hardworking, sweet, humble and kind. Two kinds of woman, two kinds of love interest.
"You should have heard what she said to Gwen".
I love these scenes between Arthur and Merlin when they're going about their daily routine, especially when they're in Arthur's bedroom being all domestic. Here, Arthur is dressing for the feast.
He had a hole in his first shirt, created by moths ! It's pretty weird that Merlin doesn't seem to care it would leave a bad impression on the five kings present at the feast. I like to think Merlin is both a bad and an extremely competent servant in his own way. He'll mess with unimportant stuff but will be extremely careful with Arthur's armor and making him look good to other people, especially foreign dignitaries. Well, that's my headcanon.
Merlin truly has no fear, he can just bring up Arthur's love for Gwen like that, out of the blue, when Arthur doesn't want to talk about it and is denying it (even after admitting his feelings about her to Merlin a few episodes ago when they were on their way to rescue Gwen from those bandits).
Arthur's threats can't make Merlin back down. He knows deep down, Arthur won't hurt him. He can keep on teasing him and laugh a bit about it.
"You're blushing !"
"No I'm not."
Morgana should always be surrounded with pretty women. This should have been her destiny.

How can Alined treat his servant like a total buffoon when he knows he has magic ?
Also while sometimes love potions can make people act stupid and in funny ways on tv, I think we'd laugh way less if this was GHB.
Are the CROWN PRINCE'S CHAMBERS never properly guarded ? I swear ! Fuck ! No wonder prisoners keep escaping, the security in this castle is a vast mess ! And why is Arthur not waking up ? You're a soldier for fuck's sake. The way the guy pops up and down like he came from under the mattress and is going back there... Comical but illogical. Get up and leave, maybe ?
"You're dressed".
Everytime Merlin shows up to Arthur's room in the morning and Arthur is awake, up and dressed, Merlin is surprised.
"Indeed, you are very skilled... at getting people to do things for you."
"That is your job".
Merlin is not afraid to spit the truth hahaha.
"I wish to make a proclamation of love".
Arthur you never speak of your feelings so openly. Ever.
Aww I love when Merlin is arranging Arthur's clothes and basically touching him as part of his job.
"Right. What will you tell your father?"
"What does my father matter?"
"Well, that's one way of approaching things."
"Of course" Merlin replies, and Merlin rolls his eyes, because of course even in love Merlin has to do Arthur's job for him.
Arthur you are clumsy with your feelings and how to express them even under a lovespell, but you still look extremely cute <3
You know what, this is the kind of scene that make me doubt that Merlin is bi and think he might actually be gay, and his short lived affair with Freya was more about compassion and the feeling of finally be with kin, people who understand him, that about attraction and romantic love.
"Flowers ?"
"Excellent. Find some. Perhaps you should also send a note".
"Brilliant idea".
"Something moving. Something... from the heart. Something... You'll think of something".
Arthur relies so much on Merlin omg. I would say that this is because he's enchanted but I think I remember him making Merlin pick flowers to give Gwen in season 5.
OHMYGOD MERLIN THIS IS WHAT YOU WROTE TO GWEN ? You have strong Cyrano powers ! It never ends well. Gosh. And the flowers are in the colours of Gwen's favourite outfits : cream and light purple. Merlin, were you ever to court someone, you would have a VERY strong game. Anyone you would woo would fall under your charm instantly.
Intricate ritual : manhandle your servant as you talk about what you made him do to court the woman you are enchanted to be in love with. Touch him, grab him. And then talk about how beautiful that woman is.
Merlin you're finally picking up on something.
This is the face of someone who realised that :
A) There's something wrong happening with Arthur
B) He fucked up.
Two things to know about Merlin :
He never knocks.
He always has the lamest excuses for being somewhere and they usually involve vermin : moths, woodworms, and now rats.
I love seeing Gwen smile... Her life probably isn't easy, and it shows a nice attention like a bouquet of flowers can change someone's day for the better <3
Haha Merlin trying to get Gaius to help but he can't tell him the specifics because he can't reveal Arthur is actually in love with Gwen ! He's being a good friend.
One of my favourite lines ever from the show.
Help he's so insistent and into the food x)
He's so lucky Merlin arrived when he did! Poor Arthur, his feelings are hurt...
There is no straight explanation for this, Alined.
Arthur, you're cute. You need a hug.
"It might be worthwhile returning to your old love."
You know what, this is actually the first time I hear Merlin expressing doubts about Arthur's feelings for Gwen and their relationship.

I KNOW I am late to the party, but I watched merlin YEARS ago, and now I'm rewatching it and...I'm just in s1 E 7 "The gates of Avalon"
and IT IS SO SO SO IMPORTANT
because it is The Lake
We got the father who is pleading for passage to Avalon and immortality, and the blue fae guy tells him
"The gates will remain closed unless the soul of a mortal prince be offered up to them"
and then Aulfric says:
ARTHUR!!
NOW--
next thing merlin does is ask Gaius bc that's what he does

Gaius states that Avalon is the land of eternal youth and that
And Merlin says
And, you know, Arthur died at the shore of that lake, with the slight possibility that his own would open his passage to Avalon, land of immortality and all that since he is still the great Arthur Pendragon...

Fic Writer Meme

Fandoms: An embarrassing number because I often find myself needing to write One Specific Thing, but led by: Sherlock Holmes (assorted versions, but especially canon); Timeless; The Hour (still not over it); Foyle's War (mysteriously perfect); Merlin (...I don't have an excuse, I just rewatched it early in the pandemic.) The Wimseyverse and the Morseverse also account for several fics each.
Number of Fics: 134 (oops?)
Fic I spent the most time on: I'm honestly not sure. Writing novella-length fics that require research is a (bad?) habit of mine. The most recent of those is All the Powders of the Merchant. ...It might be a still and woven blue though.
Fic I spent the least time on: ...I'm also not sure. I will say (confess?) that I just whipped The Hands File together for an informal Holmestice round without thinking about it too hard. It was fun!
Longest fic: The Craven Hive
Shortest fic: I have podfics, 3-sentence ficathon fills, and quite a few drabbles!
Most hits: and history immeasurably is wealthier (this is partly due to good timing, I think; the second season of Timeless had ended, and we were all excited by possibility and full of hope.)
Most kudos: Rightwise Born (this is largely due to the size of the Merlin fandom, I think; it's not a popular fic in the grand scheme of things.)
Total Word Count: 516,053 (that's five academic monographs of words; nobody look at me)
Favorite Fic I Wrote: I usually answer The Craven Hive (we write fic for ourselves first and foremost, and this is my "the Holmes-Watson partnership is about everything that is most important in human relationships actually and here's how human love survives cataclysms and also I have a lot of feelings about WWI" fic.) I will also, though, mention that The House of Magic is the only fic for Guzaarish on AO3, and I'm proud of filling that void. Also, several other people have said they're glad it exists.
Fic You Want To Rewrite/Expand On: ...I do also occasionally think about expanding The Craven Hive. Or taking the plunge and writing out my post-canon "here's how my ship can still win" series following on from Only To Uncertain Days (Foyle's War.)

Neville Longbottom X Reader ~ You’re My Happiest Memory
A/N: i rewatched the movie recently and randomly thought of this! also i chose a patronus for neville cause he apparently doesn’t have one listed🙄 (gender neutral reader)

Warnings: none
Summary: You and Neville find out your each other’s others happiest memory when trying to conjure your patronus.

"We are going to practice the patronus charm today" Harry said to all of you. He explained a bit as everyone spread out around the room of requirement. "Make it a powerful memory, the happiest you can remember. Allow it to fill you up" Harry explained as he walked around, checking on everyone. "Keep trying Seamus"
You waved your wand, uttering the words "Expecto patronum" you frowned slightly as all that came out of your wand was a small blue light. "A full bodied patronus is the most difficult to produce, but shield forms can also be equally as useful against a variety of opponents"
You looked to Harry, seeing Ginny producing a horse patronus. "Fantastic Ginny!" Harry praised before continuing walking. "Just remember, your patronus can only protect you for as long as you stay focused, so focus!"
You were stood next to Neville when Harry walked over by the two of you. "Think of the happiest thing you can" he told the two of you. "Expecto patronum" Neville said as he waved his wand, but only getting the same results as you. "I-I'm trying" Neville told him. "I know. It's good" Harry turned to walk away. "This is really advanced stuff guys, you're doing so well" Harry said.
Before you had a chance to warn him, Ron's dog patronus ran through Nevilles legs, causing him to fall backward. You reached out and grabbed his arms, stopping him from falling. You pulled him back so he was standing again. "T-Thank you" you nodded with a smile. "You're welcome" you let go of him, and turned your attention back to your wand.
Before you could attempt the spell again, Neville waved his wand as he said the incantation. You watched as the blue light came from his wand, along with a hedgehog patronus. Your mouth fell open in awe as his patronus bounded through the air. You giggled when it circled around you before disappearing.
"Neville!" you exclaimed, somewhat surprising him. "That was amazing!" Neville smiled. "Thank you" he scratched his neck awkwardly before practicing the spell again.
You turned back to look at your wand. My happiest memory... What could it possibly be? You thought as you waved your wand mindlessly. You were pulled away from you thoughts by a chuckle from next to you. You turned and looked at the boy next to you. He was staring up at his patronus with an amazed look on his face. Merlin, he's so cute. Your eyes widened slightly at this thought. You shook the thought from your head as you looked away from Neville.
You stood there motionless for a moment before deciding to test something out. You thought back to a memory you cherished as you waved your wand. "Expecto patronum!"
Your eyes widened and a smile tugged at the corner of your lips as your patronus began to form. You watched as a Y/P emerged from beams of blue light. "Amazing Y/N!" you heard Harry yell. You barely heard him though, you were too focused on what was taking place in front of your eyes.
You looked up to see your patronus running around with Neville's. You glanced over at him as he looked over at you. You both smiled before looking back up. Your patronus's dissipated as you heard Harry calling the meeting to a close.
You rushed out with everyone, sneaking through the corridors. Neville walked with you to the door of your common room, as he always did. You stopped in front of the door. "Well that was a successful meeting, don't you think?" you inquired, trying to break the somewhat awkward silence. "It was! We did great today" you nodded in agreement.
A few seconds of silence passed, before you finally asked what had been on your mind since you saw Neville produce his patronus. "What memory did you think of?" you immediately regretted your words. What if he thought I was prying? You felt yourself beginning to sweat as you waited for his response.
He chuckled quietly, looking down at his feet while scratching his neck awkwardly. "It's sort of embarrassing actually" you shook your head. "I’m sure it's not" you tried to reassure him. He looked back up at you, and you felt yourself melt as you stared into his beautiful green eyes.
"I..." his voice trailed off as he avoided eye contact for a moment. "I thought of that day when you came into the greenhouse. I had been having a horrible day, and you didn't bother me about it. You asked me about my plants. You wanted me to tell you about them. Usually people tell me to stop talking about my plants" he paused to read the look on your face. You were smiling, and he decided to keep going. "I-It made me realize I'd always have someone to talk to about them. And it just made my day, my whole year actually"
"Well, funny you should think that's embarrassing. I think that's cute. Besides, mine is similar" Neville furrowed his brows. "Oh?" you nodded. "That day you came into my dorm with that tulip. I don't know how you remembered it was my favorite flower, I didn't even remember telling you. But you just looked so happy to give it to me. And you told me how to take care of it, and watching you talk about it made me happy" you could feel your heart rate pick up as you finished your explanation.
"Well, seems that both of our happiest memories were with each other. That's quite... interesting" you both laughed at your words. You quieted down once you remembered you were still in the corridor.
You stared into each other eyes for a few seconds, debating on what to do next. To your surprise, Neville reached out, cupping your cheeks before leaning in. Your lips met in an awkward but sweet kiss. His hands were cold against your burning hot cheeks. You gripped his shoulders as your lips moved in synch.
You finally pulled away to breathe. You were both panting quietly as you rested your forehead against his. His hands dropped to your waist as you wrapped your arms around his neck. "You're phenomenal, Neville" you breathed out. "T-Thank you. Y-You're quite amazing too, Y/N" you chuckled at his flustered state. "As much as I hate to do this, but I have to go. You do to, so you don't get in trouble" you kissed the tip of his nose before pulling back slightly, still staying in his grip.
"Right" he nodded. "I'll see you in the morning though" you said with a smile, which he mirrored. "Right" he repeated, before leaning down to give you another kiss. This one was longer, and more passionate.
You finally pulled away and Neville immediately spoke. "One last thing… Would you like to go out on a date with me tomorrow?" you nodded with a smile. "I'd love to"
"Good. Great" even in the low light, you could see how red his face was. You chuckled. "I'll see you tomorrow, lover boy" you kissed him once more before pulling away from him completely and heading into your common room.

So I've seen Red, White & Royal Blue for 8th time (or is it 9th? Idek.)
It is for scientific purposes (don't look at me like that), I wanted to see for myself what small things you folks noticed after rewatch. However, I always forget to do that, as I'm always swept away by the film, the casts' acting, the plot, and can't help but swoon and giggle like it's the first time I saw the movie.
Gosh, I love the movie to bits. I've never felt this way about any form of media I've consumed, and I was addicted to HP, (we don't talk about that, or at least, about She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named-or-Else-I-Will-Start-Another-Rant) BBC Sherlock, and Merlin (still addicted to the last 2 btw). I've never rewatched them as much as I did with RWRB.
I'll watch it again tomorrow for the Nth time, and I swear I'll focus on the little details.
So it kinda frustrates me when when people talk shit about RWRB. Yes, they remove a lot of things from the book, side characters and scenes and iconic lines and dialogue. Yes, the pacing was kinda fast. You can make criticisms all you want but please do not shove your BS to the throats of the people who love this movie, just because you wanted clout and joined the hate train to become significant. You folks look like idiots who were not loved enough when you do that. It's not like people were not warned by the director that it is the most expensive fanfiction made. By that it means the movie is like an AU of some sort, and that is the way I take it, because I love the book as well.
Forgive my little rant, guys. I know the thoughts are little bit scattered but I just wanted to get it out there.

Merlin rewatch -- S1E8: The Beginning of the End
Mordred
At this point Mordred was still an innocent kid, but they really made him look super creepy... It's those big blue eyes, blank face and the hints of his capability to do powerful things. It's the way he screamed in Merlin's mind to get help in the end bit. He wasn't begging, he was forceful, using his weak visage as a weapon. And his parting words, " I know that someday, we will meet again." sounded almost threatening. His anger was justified, of course.
I actually quite like this version of him. More ambiguous and powerful. I hoped they weren't so dedicated to making him a good person in s5. At least let him keep his grudge against Merlin.
The last scene was so ominous and impactful. The music, the reveal of the name " Mordred"... mostly it was the way Mordred smiled a little after Arthur wished him luck. Then the smile dropped, his movement more stilled, blinking slower. Paired with an oblivious Arthur and the ominous music, perfectly demonstrated " the beginning of the end"
