Very, very fresh bison calf.
Months and months ago I promised y'all photos of the bison birth I was lucky enough to observe at the Cleveland Zoo last spring. As requested, they'll be under a cut, because unlike this lovely photo from the zoo announcement post, my photos are... goopy.
Tumblr media
His name is Tighee, a name which the zoo said is "the name of a Shoshone chief."
We walked up just as things started to get going, and the story is below the cut...
This is Blue, a female bison who arrived at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in fall of 2022 already pregnant. When we got to the habitat, there were a ton of people gathered around, and it wasn't quite clear what was going on.
Then we noticed her full udder and the extra pair of feet.
Tumblr media
She was dead-center in the (pretty large) habitat, which was nice - though there was a crowd, she had some good distance from everyone for most of it. The calf came pretty quickly, all things considered (something especially helpful when you're holding a heavy camera up on full manual zoom without a tripod). Because she was at a distance, my friend and I spent a bunch of time showing people near us photos on my camera screen so they could get a good view.
I was honestly really surprised at the number of people who asked why the zoo staff weren't in there with her, helping her give birth. So we explained to folk that zoo staff don't normally go in with bison on a normal day because they're so big and dangerous, and that during a birth (a time of potential stress for the whole herd, the rest of whom were off to the side of that habitat) it would be especially risky to do so. But you could see people in the zoo's uniform colors clustered around the fence, keeping a close eye on her.
And then there was a calf! For folk who haven't seen what a whole amniotic sac looks like, I'm including the next couple photos.
This one is still mid-birth, as you can see. The hooves come out first, with the calf's head laying parallel to them.
Tumblr media
Blue immediately moves to break the amniotic sac and clear the calf's airways of mucus. Om nom nom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have open eyes and an awake baby! The amniotic sac is full of fluid that helps protect the baby while it's in the uterus, which means once it's broken, the baby is goopy. One of mom's first jobs is to lick all of it away to dry the calf off.
Tumblr media
A first attempt at using legs!
Tumblr media
Nope, being born was too hard and legs don't work yet. Time to rest and recover from the effort of thinking about standing up.
Tumblr media
The first inquisitive member of the herd, another young female, comes to check out the newest addition.
Tumblr media
More attempts at legs! Getting better but still not coordinated enough yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're starting to help the baby stand up. In a non-captive setting it would be important for him to be able to walk pretty quickly after being born, and he has to stand up to be able to nurse!
Tumblr media
Everyone comes to check him out, now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have legs! They work! He hadn't quite figured out where to nurse from yet, though.
Tumblr media
And that's your bison birth for the day!

Emma was just about to take a bath, when suddenly, she felt a familiar pain. Niall rushed to help her through it with some gentle swaying, but soon it became apparent that it was much stronger than it was when Louis was born.
Unsure of what else there was to do, the couple made their way to the nearest hospital for the professionals to take over. After a difficult and long birthing process, it was clear what was so different about this time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emma had given birth to two sweet little curly-haired twin girls, the first with auburn hair like Niall's, the second with black hair like Emma's. It had already been the plan that Niall would pick the baby's first name, while Emma wanted to give one of her parents' names (depending on what the baby's sex would be) as a second name. Now, with two girls in front of them, the second time parents decided to honour each of their mothers.
Thus, the girls were named Ruby Maureen McGregor, with little green bows in her hair, and Dorothy Linda McGregor, with little red bows in hers.

April 24th, 1891
It was in the early hours on a chilly spring day in April that Evaline began her labors. Thankfully Walter had not yet left for work, and after having a slight panic, was ready to support Evaline through the enduring process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Evaline felt like the luckiest woman on earth to have her husband by her side. The couple didn't have the funds in time to hire a midwife to assist in the birth, so the responsibility would rest entirely on their shoulders. This frightened Evaline greatly, whose own mother died in childbirth when in labor with her brother. Nonetheless, Walter assured his love that he had seen many of his siblings being born and he knew what to do. Coming from a poorer family with never enough money for a midwife, Walter had aided in many, many births.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You are doing amazing, mi amor," he cooed into her ear between her bouts of pain. He made sure to hold her delicately in his arms, not wanting to cause her any more discomfort than she was already in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In no time at all, Evaline was fully ready to push. With the endearing help of her husband, she gave birth to a screaming little baby, with such powerful lungs Evaline couldn't help but laugh at his arrival.
The couple held their new child in their arms, cuddling close to admire the perfectly healthy little babe. It was a boy and he was named Salvatore Arthur Mendoza.
And how happy they were to have him.

When Ava went into labour, there wasn't time to get to the hospital before our fourth came into the world. So it happened right there on our bed - we're gonna need a new sheet-set.
Our new baby - a daughter - will be named Bella Bachelor-Kane, but we'll call her Bee for short. She's the sweetest little thing.
Also Ava said I'm getting a vasectomy.

Hey saw your post about weight loss and I'm a big fan and it makes total sense. Just curious how being overweight affects pregnancy. I feel like because I'm overweight I'm going to have a high risk pregnancy. Not pregnant at all right now but it's been on my mind lately
Oh boy. Weight in pregnancy is a WHOLE other topic, and not in my wheelhouse--I haven't delivered a baby in over two years now. (They love to show up at 3am and I love sleeping.) The short answer is that if you gain more than the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy, baby is also likely to be bigger, and that's a problem because your pelvis is not capable of expanding, so you run a higher risk of shoulder dystocia, which is where the baby actually jams in the pelvis on the way out, which is typically fatal to the baby within 5 minutes if we can't get them out because they can't breathe and their umbilical blood supply is cut off so the oxygen is not available. There is also a higher risk for gestational diabetes, aka high blood sugars in pregnancy, which also raises the risk of a larger baby. HOWEVER, a lot of this raises questions current research doesn't really answer--are fatter people at more risk in pregnancy because they're fat, or are they fat because they're high-risk? And a lot of people who deliver babies, whether they're OBs or family medicine or midwives or, God help us, lay midwives, will go full-on raging fatphobia, which makes it difficult to parse out genuinely helpful advice from terrible bullshit. Obstetrics in general is the least evidence-based medical field, because no one wants to be the asshole who ran a study that somehow hurt babies, so instead we just fumble around blindly in the dark a lot of the time going "well this SHOULD work" and hoping. Also, racism! Huge thing in obstetrics. Black women have 4 times the risk of dying in pregnancy/childbirth as white women, and of course racism and fatphobia dovetail, where fat Black women get treated particularly badly by the medical establishment.
Long story short, the best way to prepare for possible pregnancy is to take the best possible care of YOU--that means exercise and eating lots of veggies, not because that will make you thin, but because it improves your blood vessel and heart health, your bone health, your stash of nutrients that baby will raid during development, your muscle strength, and so on. And take the time BEFORE you want to get pregnant to find a doctor who delivers babies (whether that's an OB/GYN or a family doctor) who treats you like a human being.
And, controversially, I do think it's best to have a doctor for most pregnancies. Not because midwives can't provide excellent care, but because obstetrics is all about the situations where something goes wrong, and we are very bad at predicting who will have something go wrong. The worst delivery I was ever in looked fine on paper. First-time mom, dilated fine, pushing went great, no problems on the fetal heart monitor, baby descended just fine. Then baby crowned, got shoulder dystocia, my attending had to take over for me and do the maneuvers to free the baby, baby comes out and has to go straight to resuscitation, and I look back over at mom to realize more blood is coming out of her vagina than should immediately after delivery, by A LOT, and we almost had to call a massive tranfusion protocol for her. She hemorrhaged 2 liters of blood in minutes. Then she developed post-partum preeclampsia, which can be fatal if you don't have medical management right there. We had to put her on a magnesium drip to prevent seizures. That was the worst delivery I ever did, and I'm counting the 17-year-old primipara (first-time mom) I worked with while a med student, who delivered in the back-ass of nowhere, spoke Spanish only with an attending doctor who spoke English only in a hospital that didn't bother with interpreters until active labor, and needed forceps, a technique fewer and fewer doctors even practice. No epidural. Forceps without an epidural is, no joke, something that scares me to the point where I simply would not do an unblocked birth.
One of the major causes of maternal death is hemorrhage. If you have an IV in someone's arm pouring in fluid, you can survive with as little as about 1/7th of your original blood. Red blood cells can do a LOT of heavy lifting. And that buys you time for someone to get up to Labor & Delivery from the first floor with the on-hand packed red blood cells that then go into the IV and save your life. Blood transfusions are life-saving, and they are life-saving every single day in the US.
And hemorrhage risk goes up with subsequent babies. Someone giving birth for the first time is at higher risk for a lot of things, but someone giving birth for the 5th time who figures they're OK with a home birth because their other births went fine can bleed out in minutes.
I don't like or trust the medical establishment, and I think OB care has a LONG way to go in the US, because we create PTSD in about 11% of people who give birth. Maternal PTSD is far more prevalent in the US than combat PTSD. I would still have a medical doctor be my obstetrical care provider, because I don't want to die like that.

When: December 24, 2023
Where: Various
Notes: pregnancy tw, birth tw
Alice had been waddling around the house, getting everything ready. It was just a countdown now. A few days left until her due date. She still insisted on going out and about but finally agreed to take it a bit easy. She adjusted one of the colorful decorations on the wall.
“How does this look?” She called over to Spencer who she assumed was nearby. Tilting her head, she wrinkled her nose. “Or did I just make more crooked?”

growing the family
These were originally posted by the deactivated user herebememes. Here, you can find a large collection of rp prompts relating to couples deciding to have a family together. CWs apply for family planning, infertility, pregnancy, and childbirth.
FAMILY PLANNING:
“I know we’ve always said we want to have kids. Why don’t we start?”
“I think we’re ready. Let’s have a baby. Or five.”
“We have something very important I want to discuss right now.”
“Since when do you not want kids, [partner’s name]? Or do you just not want kids with me?”
“What... what do you mean you can’t have kids?”
“Little known fact: dudes can have trouble making babies, too.”
“We’ll get a second opinion.”
“How do you feel about adopting, or using a surrogate?”
“This fertility doctor is a godsend.”
“If this doesn’t work out, we can do other things.”
“We can adopt or- or find a good surrogate.”
“We should keep trying when we’re ready.”
“That was the adoption agency! We got approved!”
“[Name of surrogate] called. It worked, we’re gonna be parents!”
PREGNANCY:
“I’ve got a special surprise. Follow me.”
“Wait, really? We’re having a baby?”
“Surprise! I’m pregnant, babe!”
“A baby? This is the best news ever!!”
“You’re gonna be a great Mama.”
“But what if I’m not a good Mama?”
“I can’t tell if this is the real baby or just my lunch?”
“This kid better be the cutest thing ever. I feel like utter crap.”
“I’m tired of people not knowing, when can we tell them about the baby?”
“Babe, I think you popped!”
“You’re pregnant? Congratulations, that’s awesome!”
“Guess it’s time to start taking weekly bump pictures, huh?”
“Come quick! I think the baby is kicking!”
“Just wait. They’ll do it again.”
“Right there! Did you feel that? Our baby is saying ‘hello’ to you.”
“Baby has definitely made their appearance this week. No hiding this bump anymore.”
“I know cravings are a thing but I am so freaking hungry! What gives?”
“I know not everyone carries the same but I thought I’d be bigger by now.”
“How big or small your bump is doesn’t mean as much as you think.”
“Time to schedule our birthing classes.”
“As long as both you and baby are healthy, there’s nothing to worry about. I promise.”
“Please don’t touch my belly without asking.”
“[Partner] got all the food I’ve been craving and it was like manna from Heaven.”
“You can touch my bump, I don’t mind.”
“Baby’s moving. Come feel!”
“I’m at the point where my bump enters rooms before I do.”
“Oh my gosh, you are huge!”
“I feel giant.”
“This is a pretty big belly, isn’t it?”
“Oh yes, you’ve definitely dropped.”
“I do not waddle. This is my preggo swag walk.”
“I am way too pregnant for this.”
“I feel like all I do lately is sleep, eat, and go to the bathroom. Can this kid come out already?”
“You look like a duck when you walk.”
“The way I see it, I was a Mama as soon as I saw the positive test and decided to keep it.”
“I’m gonna be somebody’s Mama soon.”
“Are you still sick? Oh, Mama. I’ll help.”
“You’ve got that beautiful Mama glow.”
“I don’t like Mama-to-be. I’m a Mama now.”
“Hey, baby. This is your Mama. I can’t wait to finally meet you.”
“Look at this bump! Can you believe how close we are to meeting them?”
“Awww, Mama, look how big you’re getting.”
“Your belly is so cute, Mama!”
“Hey there, big mama.”
“What’s up, Mamacita?”
“Come on, baby! Your parents want to meet you.”
“Whoa, Mama! Look at that big, round, beautiful bump.”
“Pregnancy suits you, Mama.”
“Oh my god, I want him/her out!”
“I’m uncomfortable and achy and huge.”
“Don’t look at me, I’m gonna cry.”
“I literally rolled out of bed this morning, thanks for that.”
“Come out, come out, COME OUT!”
“It’s your fault I’m an overly emotional blimp right now. The least you can do is help out.”
“Yesterday I literally cried because there was a leaf in front of the garage door sensor. I am so ready to be done.”
“I’m well past the point where being pregnant is fun and cute.”
“My due date has come and gone. Get this thing out of me right now.”
“I was told there would be glowing.”
“I hate being pregnant, I’m never doing this again. I’m serious.”
“I know I’m the size of a planet right now, but everyone wants to touch my bump whenever I go out.”
“When I’m shopping, people don’t look at me anymore. They just stare at this gigantic belly.”
“No, I am not having twins. I just carry big, not that it’s any of your business.”
“I can’t sleep and literally no position is comfortable.”
“I’m either being kicked in the ribs or his/her head is so low he/she feels like he/she might fall out.”
“I thought I was done being sick!”
“I’ve been watching like ten birth videos on YouTube a day and I still don’t feel ready for it.”
“All this discomfort and I still have to be screaming in pain for most of their birthday?”
“Why do I have to go through labor? Can’t I just push the kid out and be done with it?”
“This is false alarm number four. Tell your kid to stop playing with our emotions.”
“Being pregnant is such a blessing, but do these last few weeks have to suck so much?”
“Due dates are just estimates. If you’re a few days early or late, don’t freak out.”
PREPARING FOR BIRTH:
“I want to welcome our baby at home/at a birth center.”
“What’s a birth center?”
“A birth plan and a strong advocate are essential.”
“I hate hospitals. I don’t want to have our baby in one if we can help it, okay?”
“Birth is birth no matter how it happens.”
“Baby and I are going to do this together. We’re a team.”
“How about we go over your birth plan one more time?”
“I got you this CD full of birthing affirmations.”
“I am of the opinion that moms should guide birth. It’s happening to them and their baby, no one else.”
“I am not anti-hospital! I’m just… afraid of them.”
“Look, I don’t want to be given a c-section unless it’s medically necessary.”
“This class is dumb! I know how to breathe!”
“How do you feel about being induced?”
“I’m sad about the c-section, yeah, but it’s safer given everything. Baby and I will be okay. Don’t worry.”
“I know we’re both upset about having to change your birth plan. Did you want to talk about it?”
“I’m so excited! It’s gonna hurt but we’re meeting our baby! I can do anything for them.”
“C-section is booked.”
“It feels kinda weird that we have an official birthday now instead of waiting.”
“My body knows what to do to birth this baby. Let me trust it.”
“Hospital bag is all packed.”
“Everything is ordered for our home birth.”
LABOR:
“Yeah, babe, this is the real thing. We should start counting how far apart they are and how long they last.”
“If you forget the camera, I’m gonna be so upset.”
“Okay, I am getting an epidural as soon as I need one. No later or earlier.”
“Honey? Wake up, please. My water broke.”
“The due date isn’t until next week!”
“About time! The due date was [x] days ago.”
“It’s baby day!”
“My contractions are getting closer together. Stronger.”
“Call the midwife. This is the real deal.”
“Ow-ow-ow! Contraction!”
“Please hold my hand.”
“Please excuse my weird animal noises.”
“It hurts so bad!”
“I can’t do this!”
“You can do this. You are doing it.”
“I’m your advocate here. What you say goes.”
“Fuck breathing! You have the baby!”
“Deep cleansing breaths, Mama. In through your nose and out through your mouth.”
“These contractions are annoying.”
“They aren’t that bad, I promise. See? I just breathed through one.”
“Give me the epidural, please.”
“Anesthesiologist will be up soon.”
“Uugghhhh!!! Make it stop!!”
“That was insane!”
“Getting an epidural does not make you a failure. Don’t say that.”
“Epidural is in and I feel so much better.”
“Let me do this my way!”
“I’m sorry, we need to prep you for a c-section.”
“We’re at ten centimeters already? That’s crazy!”
“I could kiss that anesthesiologist.”
“There you go. Sound your baby out.”
“I think I need to push soon.”
“Don’t push until you can’t resist the urge anymore, okay?”
“I can’t believe our baby is finally gonna be here.”
“Just put pressure on my back and hips, babe. That helps the most.”
“Let’s get on the bed.”
“You don’t have to push flat on your back if you don’t want to.”
“Can we get a squat bar in here, please?”
“Page the nurse. I think it’s time to meet this little lady/guy.”
“Let’s walk around the house a bit more. See if that helps.”
“You be as loud or as quiet as you need.”
BIRTH:
“I’m feeling a lot of pressure.”
“It’s trying to come out my- ow!”
“I need to push!”
“Let’s get in the birth pool.”
“Turn the lights down low so mama can focus.”
“You’re so strong. I’m so proud of you.”
“I’m sorry I’m so loud. The neighbors probably think I’m being murdered or there’s a wild animal in the house.”
“What position do you want to push in?”
“Yeah, baby is right there.”
“Push harder.”
“It’s like I’m trying to shit a watermelon!”
“Come out!”
“I’m pushing as hard as I can…”
“Why is this so much work?”
“I don’t feel like I’m doing anything.”
“I’m okay, babe. The epidural works. I just feel pressure, no pain or anything. I promise.”
“Gonna push a baby out! Nnngghh!”
“I don’t know how much longer I can do this.”
“I can’t, it’s burning!”
“Keep pushing, you can do this!”
“Baby coming out!”
“I want [partner] to catch the baby.”
“How much more pushing?”
“Reach down and take your baby.”
“Here’s your baby! Congratulations!”
“Oh, my God! I did it!”
“I’m so proud of you, my love.”
“I’ve never loved you more than today.”
“Happy birthday, little one.”
“My throat is so sore.”
“Hi, baby! Hi!”
“I feel like I just did the hardest thing I’ll ever do.”
“He/she looks like you!”
“I’m gonna love this baby my whole life.”
“I’m so happy to not be pregnant anymore.”
“I’m gonna stay with you guys the next few days. Make sure we all adjust to this new normal.”
“You’re the most... just wow! I am amazed by you.”
“You did it! You’re amazing.”
“I love you even more than I already did.”
“There’s a whole new person in the world now.”
“I can’t believe we had our baby at home. That was amazing.”
“Doctor said I’m gonna need some pain meds for the next few days. Maybe weeks.”
“You’re already a wonderful mother/father.”
“Seeing you with our baby makes my heart melt.”
“How are you feeling? Still groggy from the surgery?”
“I feel like a failure.”
“You’re not a failure. Don’t say that.”
“It doesn’t matter that you had a c-section. At least not how you think. You’re not less of a woman or whatever crap some people say to make others feel bad about themselves. You still birthed our baby. You’re a rockstar and I’m so proud of you.”
“Ready to go home?”
“You’re doing a great job, Mama. It’s almost over.”
“You’re almost ready to push, Mama. Just a little bit more to go.”
“Showtime, Mama. Push on your next contraction.”
“We’re ready, Mama. Do you know how to push?”
“Good job, Mama! Push that baby right on out. You’re doing great.”
“Push, Mama, push harder.”
“Get mad, Mama. Push really hard.”
“Hey, Mama, here’s your baby.”
“You did it, Mama!”
“I’m finally a Mama.”

Hi! This is my first time doing one of these, so I hope it's not too weird.
So I was out and about today and I was talking with my mother. She was telling me about her struggles with her stretch marks after having 4 kids. I just want to know how Bruce would feel about himself after giving birth in your fic " A Sky of Honey."
I really hope this wasn't too weird to ask. Thank you if you respond :)
That's a tough one! I know there's a lot of different approaches to stretch marks with varying levels of success (body neutrality vs "tiger stripes" vs self-hatred, etc) but I'm going to take an interesting route now on this post, if you'll humor me for a second.
Bruce absolutely already has stretch marks. Anyone carrying that much muscle (BVS Batfleck is insane) has likely done some bulking cycles where muscle growth = stretch marks, even in small quantities.
I don't think, with all of his scarring and injuries, Bruce is super insecure about how his body looks. He views it more as a tool. His face is maybe the only thing he's "vain" about (face and hair, let's say) but that's mostly for his cover.
Post-birth, I'm not certain how that will change for Bruce, or if it will at all. Does he want to look attractive for his alpha? does he value the stretch marks like any other scar? does it create some sort of gender/dynamic dysphoria for him? all good questions!!
I welcome anyone else's thoughts on this. I'm not entirely sure what will happen if/when the topic comes up in the fic.

Early December, 1894
It was a rather cold and rainy winter’s night on the 10th of December. Evaline was nearing the end of her pregnancy soon, and spent most of the days bedridden until she would give birth. It left Walter with the responsibility of taking care of the farm, the animals and their son. Though Salvatore proved to be a very mind tempered boy, often trying his best to help his father in whatever chores needed to be taken care of.
It was after a long day of such tasks that Walter decided to read a book before heading off to bed. The rhythmic drips of rain helped ease him into a state of relaxation, his fingers flipping through the pages, hoping sleep would soon overtake his consciousness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upstairs, Evaline laid in bed, sleeping mindlessly as the minutes passed by. That was, until she felt a sharp pain hit her right in her stomach. Sitting up with a jolt, Evaline swung her legs off the bed to stand, ready to call for her husband when her waters instantly leaked down her nightdress, pooling on the floorboards.
“Walter!” She yelled as the first wave of agony struck her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was at her side in an instant, worry washed all over his face at the sight of his wife. Evaline sucked through her teeth, “My labors have started, ah-! The baby is coming.”
And so the birthing process began. With each new flutter of pain, Evaline began to feel that ever familiar feeling of dread creep up on her. The memories of her mother pushed through to the front of her mind, achingly reminding her of the night she died. She could still remember her mother’s cries, the shrieks and wails of suffering that rung in her ears for months after. It terrified her as a girl and it haunted her still.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yet she couldn’t think of such things, at least not with Walter anyway. He shushed and soothed her, reminding her that she had already been through this before. Salvatore was alive and healthy and so was she, and so too would this baby be. Gradually his wife’s mind eased as she grew closer to birth.
After just two pushes, Evaline had given birth to another baby, another boy! His tiny cries filled the room as he came into the world, Walter laughing at the sight of another son in his arms. He kissed her as tears ran down her cheeks.
“He will be called Victor,” Walter concluded while the boy was cradled in his arms. He hadn’t noticed that Evaline had fallen back onto the bed, another intense pressure of pain hitting her again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something wasn’t right. Evaline could swear she felt the need to push again. “Walter,” she hissed through her teeth.
“Mi amor, what’s wrong?” He set Victor on the far end of the bed as Evaline opened her legs once again. He could see another head. Another baby.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second child came just as quickly as the first to shell shocked parents. After a few moments of staring in awe at the twins in their bedroom, the couple saw that the second twin was a girl.
The twins were named Victor Francis and Rosalind Marie Mendoza.
