In honor of my big bang fic's, Can Life Be Beautiful (Instead of Big Fun)?, first anniversary and hitting 200,000 words, I commissioned this wonderful cover art from @remmicreates!!! It's absolutely amazing and I'm so in love with it! (Go check remmicreates out!)

Just shy over 80k, this baby took a lot of effort to get out into the world. Luckily I had @roomwithanopenfire to cheer me on. Thank you!! And of course there's @themeanderingty with their unique artwork. It's amazing to see my words translated into a visual image!

This was my first time participating in a Big Bang. It was a lot of fun to work with a team (thanks again!!!). It was a great experience, even though having a deadline is in no way benificial to my creative process.

These gems of knit sweaters (featured in the fic!) are from the 1986 British pattern book 'Wit Knits'. There are so many amazing sweaters in this book, I didn't even pick the most outrageous ones! Also, I very much want someone to knit the one with the bookworm for me, or the sweater vest with the frog. You can find the sweaters in the fic in the third chapter. They're a Christmas present ;-)

Summary:

Framed pictures shake off of the walls, coming down to smash and shatter on the floor; their dresser tips over, slamming heavily down onto the wood below, and Blair screams again, throwing herself against Ed as if she can climb beneath his skin for safety.

Ed climbs back into the bed, pushing Blair into Stede’s side where Alma and Louis are already huddling. He brings his arms up over all four of them, protecting them if anything else should fall, but the quake seems to come to a stop only moments later.

For a second, they all just sit there together, clustered close, breathing heavily.

Then, quietly, Blair tells all of them the same words that Ed had heard her say to Louis before, and the television before that:

“They’re here.”

DBH Big Bang 2023 Sneak Peek

Hank followed him like a dog on a leash. The smell of tarry, slightly burned coffee hung in the air. Gavin hung with it, leaning against the small break room table. His eyes alighted on Connor, and then on Hank.

Gavin straightened up. Cold fingers dragged down Connor's spine, which he did his best to ignore. “What's with the tin can?”

Connor walked past Gavin to the coffee machine and didn't turn around. “It's a new model they're trialing,” he answered.

“So they gave it to you?” Gavin asked. Connor kept his eyes on his coffee mug. The machine whirred when he pressed a button, and then the soft trickle of hot liquid followed. “I guess it is your type.”

Connor rolled his eyes and turned. Gavin wasn't looking at him, instead he'd moved towards Hank. He looked comically small, like some angry, yappy little mutt squaring up to Hank's unmoved neutrality. “So what model are you?”

Hank's expression didn't shift, but he looked down at his own jacket and pointed, slowly, to the RK800 emblazoned there. He tapped it twice before looking back at Gavin. “I thought literacy was a basic requirement for cops?”

Connor bit the inside of his bottom lip hard. Gavin squared his shoulders. “Oh, they made it a smartass.”

“Gavin,” Connor called his name, wanting him to back down. Hank's eyes flicked up to Connor for a split second. Connor was almost sure that Hank nodded to him.

“Someone needs to teach this thing some manners,” Gavin declared, flashing a sneer at Connor.

Connor saw what was happening in a blur. Gavin's hand became a fist, and it moved towards Hank's chest, aiming for what was the solar plexus on a human, and where the thirium pump lay on an android. Connor had seen Gavin floor an android with a swift hit there before. He didn't know how Gavin had learned it worked. He hadn't wanted to ask.

Hank's hand caught Gavin's fist and then squeezed. Gavin froze. In one quick jerk Hank had dragged Gavin's hand up behind his back and was forcing him to his knees, ignoring the demands from Gavin to, “Take your fucking hands off me!”

With Gavin on his knees Hank looked up at Connor as if he wanted instruction. “Should I let him go?” he asked.

Gavin spat profanities like a pissy cat. Connor failed to hide his amusement. “Eventually,” he conceded. He took a couple of steps towards Gavin and crouched down so that Gavin was on his eye level. There was an immense satisfaction in seeing Gavin completely fail to free himself from Hank's grip. “You should probably leave this one alone,” he advised, amiably. All androids had self preservation programmed into them, although it came behind following orders and not letting humans get hurt in their priorities. Hank seemed to have figured out the loophole in those rules, which was that he could defend himself without harming a human if he could immobilize them. “He's smarter than you.”

“You're such a plastic fucker,” Gavin snarled at him.

Connor smiled beatifically. “You know, I miss this about working with you,” he said, mildly. “The camaraderie, the bromance,” he paused briefly before adding, “the needless violence.” He set his hand in Gavin's hair and ruffled it. Gavin bared his teeth and tried to jerk free from Hank again. “Try and touch Hank and he has my full permission to dislocate both your arms.” Connor stood then, and turned to retrieve his mug of coffee, taking a sip before he nodded at Hank. “Let him go.”

Hank held on to Gavin a moment longer. From the way Gavin hissed Connor guessed that Hank had given his arm one final squeeze before he released him. Connor strode out of the break room, hoping Hank would follow, and that Gavin would show an atypical sense of self preservation and not follow.

“Maybe you're right about getting something to eat,” Connor conceded, when they were a few safe feet clear of the break room. It would put a healthy distance between Hank and Gavin, and give Gavin a chance to stew on what Connor had said.

He definitely wasn't agreeing to it because Hank had impressed him a little bit. Not at all.

Marinette allowed Luka to pull her out of the room and out of the hospital. They were halfway back to the Liberty when her brain caught up with them. 

“Luka,” she whispered as he continued to tug her along. “Luka!” 

He didn’t stop until she dug her heels into the brick and resisted. 

Knocked out of whatever trance he was in, Luka stopped and looked back at her. “Let’s keep going.”

“Where?”

“The boat.”

“But we should talk about-”

“I know but I don’t think we should do it out in the open.”

Marinette nodded and allowed him to walk them there and below deck. He checked his mom’s room and Juleka’s side of the room before they settled on his bed, completely alone. 

The moment he was next to her, Marinette burst into tears. 

Everything was so fucking screwed up!

Been told the first time I did this didn't take for some reason so here we are again.

I just wanted to post a quick thank you to everyone who put up with my madness during the creation of my DBH Big Bang 2023 fanfiction.

This is going to be a long post, guys.

Everyone on the discord server, doesn't matter if they were taking part in the event or just cheering, were incredible and always willing to help if you got stuck or needed a little push to get going again.

That being said, I wanna thank a few people in particular for helping me get this fanfiction done.

First of all: @batbootie for beta reading almost the entire thing. Your comments really helped me flesh out the story and... correct my spelling and grammar. You've done an amazing job and you powered through the chapters, spamming me with notes. Thank you so much!

Also thank you to @timefliesinadream, @intheyellowandgreen and @mangabirdao3 for helping me out when I got stuck and needed help with the plot or got insecure about a scene.

Now to my two two incredible artists!

Thank you to @cptjh-arts working with you is always a joy and I love getting the little sneak peeks of your drawings! You didn't just create art, but you were also pushing me to keep going, cheering me on during the entire event. Thanks to @yvy-900 who created a lot of renders for my fanfiction, bringing so many scenes to live. You powered through the creation of these renders and I'm still amazed and in awe every time I look at them. Your renders are incredible and I enjoyed working with you. :)
