I just think that I love Bellamione... or well, the fanfics, because it does something that is desperately needed in the HP fandom right now. It focuses on women and the relationships they have. It also focuses a lot on the way men treat women in society, the pressure of family and tradition, also comphet-feelings (well, some, of course) which are cool themes to explore. Also, it usually does focus on the Black Sisters and, tbh, they need more love and I am desperate for more content so....Well, there aren't that many options really, lmao, and I ended up falling down the rabbit hole.

TLDR: FOCUS MORE ON THE WOMEN, FANDOM, I FUCKEN DARE YOU.

Hard no on Bellamione. Do not see them together.

Top Ten Best Bellamione AU’s

Not a list of fic recs, just a list of some of my favorite AU’s that I’ve run into while reading Bellamione. Kudos to the authors who feed us, may a crucio fall upon any writers block that dares impede them.

1. Evil

I’m reading Bellamione. You gotta go big with the dark slice of life or go home. I wanna see fighting, wanna see morals getting corrupted (and Hermione’s you know what), and I wanna batshit wild plot. Hermione better be popping off with the Avada Kedavra’s, sis.

2. Soulmate

Yes, I am a sucker for soulmate au’s. (Let’s be real, who isn’t) And the angstier the better. I want them to have to fight for that bond, and fight for their love. Cute soulmate stories are alright but only if I microdose them.

3. Time Travel

Has this been overdone and overused as all hell? YES. But- it’s still fun to see what kind of twist the author will put on it to make it it’s own thing. It never gets old reading about Hermione traveling back in time to seduce, I mean, save Bellatrix.

4. Duo

This isn’t so much a category more than a trope. Bellatrix and Hermione being forced to pair up and solve problems amuses me to no end. Just good ol’ shenanigans where they pretend to hate each other but end up saving each others lives over and over again because they’re totally not in love.

5. Bad girl

These are the kinds of stories that are so hard to find. Bellatrix is naturally a bad girl, but in canon. I’m talking about muggle AU’s where her and Hermione are regular students in school. Would love to see more of Bellatrix being a leather toting, cigarette smoking, eyeliner wearing, bad girl that hides out under the bleachers. With Hermione as the goody-two shoes being slowly drawn into her world.

6. Scandal

Again, not so much an AU but found in some of them. I just love when the truth comes out that Hermione is dating Bellatrix. It’s just chef’s kiss when the wizarding world loses their marbles and Bellatrix gets to be snooty about bagging the golden girl.

7. Unpopular

This refers to AU’s that aren’t widespread. Meaning when Bellamione are put into a very rare AU type, such as being put in a Witcher AU- not a lot of that going on. I do enjoy the popular AU’s but sometimes it’s nice to read an author’s take on something very niche with the ship. For those of you who do it, thank you for keeping me fed.

8. Crack

From time to time I enjoy crack fics with this pairing. There’s not many of them floating around giving the nature of Bellamione being a more serious relationship focusing on redemption, etc. Sometimes I just wanna see Bellatrix do a sick wheelie on a dirt bike, ya know.

9. Professor AU

Listen...we all have needs. Bellatrix as a professor? As a strict professor? I’m taking her class every semester and reading every fic I can get my hands on.

10. Those Gilded Chains we Wear

I know it’s not an AU, but honestly, it might as well be. It kicked off so many great ideas for how to even write a Bellamione that would work in the wizarding world, and has inspired many authors. I hope one day to see it finished.

in general, i try to hold to two principles when i’m reading: i’ll try anything once; and even when i dislike something, there’s always going to be an exception out there. indeed, i’ve been won round to pairings i would never have imagined [drarry and snarry in joint first place among them] by phenomenally talented writers who have managed to make the implausible feel entirely right.

that said, there’s a couple of ships i’ve never truly managed to vibe with, even when their authors are brilliant. you will notice a theme:

harmony

this is partially because i’m a romione girly and harmony fics always seem to treat ron as having a brain full of sawdust and/or being a death eater.

it’s partially because fanon!hermione is fucking insufferable and she’s at her worst in harmony fics.

it’s partially because her and harry’s communication styles don’t mesh in the slightest [he loves avoidance, she loves arguing, anyone who says ron doesn’t also love arguing is wrong].

snamione

this has nothing to do with the age gap - or even the student/teacher dimension; i literally don’t care about that! sue me! - but with the fact that it always requires perfect fanon!hermione, perfect fanon!snape who actually isn’t ugly and weird but suave and romantic, ron being a cunt, the author to ignore the fact that they are intellectually incompatible [hermione lacks the fundamental creativity which snape prides himself on - which is why he hates that she just regurgitates textbooks] and that snape clearly canonically thinks she’s fucking insufferable.

bellamione

obviously we all love shipping the trio with people who’d like to kill them [i am a tomarry girly, after all], but come on now.

dramione

because draco isn't being flirty and acerbic, he genuinely considers her to be subhuman.

[i am of course happy to receive recs for fics which might change my mind on any of the above...]

Bellatrix 1.80 m. x Hermione 1.65 m. CANON.

I find Bellamione absurd and laughable, and while Quillkiller isn't as ridiculous, I really have a hard time imagining Bella and Rita Skeeter as a couple. It feels very strange. I voted for Bellamione because it's more OOC and because of...Hermione.

i do! not super often but since i’m the only person who writes lou and rose and i am starved for content i have to. also i’m my own target audience so as long as i don’t do it too often and oversaturated myself i find it fun

5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?

i love this question. i have a lot of ideas that i probably won’t get around to (70 at my last count) but one that i’m sure i wouldn’t have the patience and energy to pull off is a fic where bellatrix meets tom riddle at age 16/17 and he slowly grooms her into becoming the person that she becomes. and go into a backstory of a not necessarily abusive family, but one that has left her vulnerable to tom’s grooming and how she was doo,ed from the start but that doesn’t excuse her, just that she could never have gone down any other path

6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?

THERE WAS and going to my bookmarks to collect it i have now discovered it no longer exists but it was a sweeney todd fic that was semi canon compliant and the ending is extremely triggering so i feel i cannot describe it here but it was so tragic and i will be downloading my favourites from now on

also NellieTrelawney’s fluffy belladolphus fics are quickly becoming comfort rereads for me

10. Is there a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?

YES! impure breeding which was my first bellamione fic got an insane response so many kudos and lovely comments that i just was not expecting! it was the first time i had a fic get relatively popular virtually overnight and it was surprising in a good way

I'd be more okay with Bellatrix/Hermione if people treated this ship straight. Like, girl, you're basically writing something that comes of as a Nazi/Jewish pairing! You have so much freedom to write something tragic and complex, but instead you choose to completely butcher one of them for the cutie factor... If you aren't comfortable with Bellatrix' personality, maybe just don't write about her.

Definitely would not call it a Nazi/Jewish pairing, but yes it certainly is a Oppressor/Oppressed ship, which unsurprisingly makes a lot of people uncomfortable.

I think they take inspo from movie!Bellatrix, who was much more Harley-Quinn-ish and very playful and unserious. But either way, Bella is still Bella, she’s still a maniac who takes pleasure in the torture of others, especially muggleborns. I’ve come across a few decent Bellamione fics/one-shots before (sometimes my eyes skip through tags ok? 🥲), but I don’t think I’ll be able to find one that has them both be relatively loyal to their canon characters while also being in a romantic relationship 😭 unless it was a dark!Hermione and/or a sympathetic!Bella fic.

Why don’t you ship it? I pretty much only ship canon or canon plausible couples. TBH I wasn't even aware that Bellamione was a thing until about a month ago when it showed up on my dash, so I'm even more surprised it's one of the ships sent through for this ask game. I don't really have much to say about it because I don't know how it's written or how it would work, but for me I don't think it's anything I could get into because I can't get past the abusive nature of Bellatrix.

What would have made you like it? Nothing. This isn't a ship I could ever really see myself seeking out. If you like this ship and enjoy it, go for it! It's just not my cup of tea.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it? Not really, I don't know enough about it.

Bellatrix and Voldemort

I read this quote today, and it just screamed Bellamort to me:

She looked my demons in the eye and smiled. She  fell for the very thing  I thought she’d fear. [ VàZaki Nada ]

Now, people, this is why Bellamort works in Canon (I personally don't like The Cursed Child at all and chose to ignore it, but this does not invalidate Bellatrix x Voldemort at all). Since he was a child, everyone has always told Tom that he was dark, wrong, mad and deranged (rightfully so). Everyone always tried to change him. Bellatrix never did - Bellatrix loved him because of who he was, not despite it. She wasn't scared or repulsed by him, even when he was a shell of a man she accepted him and loved him, albeit in an unhealthy, obsessive way. That's what I love most about them and what makes their story tragic - Tom never experienced a mother's love, the unconditional, boundless, I-would-lay-down-my-life-for-you love, and it scarred him. The thing is, he had that. He had that love for years, right in front of him, and wasn't able to recognize it or accept it. No other ship with Tom is able to do that without changing either party's personality. It baffles me how someone can take the Tom Riddle of the books - even his saner, more fascinating, young self - and ship him with Harry or Hermione or anyone else. First of all, poor Harry and poor Hermione, why would they ever want that? Unless of course, you change them entirely, but then they are two entirely different people (I am a firm believer in the fact that stories with a dark!protagonist are never, ever IC - which is not bad per se, but I really don't see the point, just make up a whole new character), both physically and personality-wise. Secondly, Tom Riddle, who already called himself Lord Voldemort at 16, who was self-conceited, narcissistic, incredibly powerful and quite sick in the head, would never be with either of them without having his personality altered. If anything, he would want someone who worshipped him and someone who he could influence and mould as he pleased, like he did with Bella in Canon.
