a/n Hi! First of all thank you so much for this lovely request, it was an utter pleasure to write and I really enjoyed it and I hope you will too! I'm always a sucker for canon fics because it's so fun to take the show we all know and love and hate sometimes bc mnet kinda shady and write about it. I've lifted lines directly from the sleepover segment from episode 12, just be citing my sources. I definitely would have included reader/ mc/ y/n's pov but ended up keeping it to jay's pov for some reason, idk maybe it's like writer brain. If anyone wants a "your pov" version, do let me know~ that would be a fun part 2

Jay tips his head back and exaggerates his cringe, laughing along with everyone at Gunwook stealing Junhyeon’s aegyo. Only he can’t help but let his eyes linger back to you giggling quietly from where you’re leaning against Hoetaek, the elder playing with your hair.

And even if he knows that Hoetaek is a little more familiar with the former Cube trainees like you and Matthew and Sung Hanbin, he can’t help but feel the smallest twinge of jealousy. He wanted to be close to you like that, to mess with your hair until you pout at him and he can’t help but-

“By all means, keep staring, we might as well get a neon sign that says I LIKE YOU and put it on your head.”

Kamden mumbles from beside him, effectively snapping him out of his maladaptive daydreaming.

“Oh my god dude, shut up.”

He hisses, still keeping one eye on you as you lean into Hoetaek’s touch. Think positive, Jay. Even if you're also a fellow English speaker, at least you’re far away enough that you probably won’t overhear them. Ricky snickers from his other side.

“You’re so subtle, man.”

He levels them a look. It’s their last night, can’t he get a break?

“It’s our last night Jay, you know, you should tell them.”

Apparently not.

He looks up and Kamden manages to look even more unimpressed than he usually does, head tilting a little more than 45° for emphasis.

“Nah, it’s cool, besides, they’re definitely not into me.”

Jay deflects, ignoring the sinking feeling that begins to take hold.

“You don’t know that.”

“I’m pretty sure I do.”

“Just try.”

“You’re being very persistent today, Kam, I dunno, it’s kinda sus.”

Before Kamden can fire back, the whole conversation about memorable first impressions turns around and bites Jay in the ass because the universe loves messing with him.

“So who was your best first impression, Jay-ah?”

Suddenly everyone’s looking at him expectantly. Kamden and Ricky look like they already know and Jay knows that they know that the answer sitting at the tip of his tongue is just across the room, Hoetaek’s arm around their shoulder. Still, Jay hesitates.

He’s had a crush on you ever since the Star Level test. You had immediately caught his attention walking in. Sure, there were perfect visuals like Jiwoong and Hanbin but you were the most attractive person he’s ever seen. And you were talented, Jay could swear your performance was one of the best but Kamden’s convinced that he’s just biased.

But even though you’re both from G-group, you’ve always ended up in different teams, leaving Jay with not that many opportunities to talk with you. When he does end up around you, he just can’t, defaulting to his usual over the top expressions for laughs. While he’s always thought of himself as a confident person, he just finds himself fumbling around you. It doesn’t help that you seem to stick to Hoetaek or Sung Hanbin or one of your team members. You’re friendly with each other, sure, but nothing more than that.

Right, back to the question.

“The person I remember the most is Yujin.”

He immediately feels the collective disappointment that emanates from his corner of the room as the rest of the trainees react, Matthew even sitting up to hit him with some bombastic side-eye. He pretends he doesn’t hear Kamden sighs, doing an impression of Yujin which looks more like a possession honestly. The others laugh. Jongwoo’s comment is the crutch he needs to limp away as he holds Yujin in check as competition.

Of course, it wouldn’t be that easy.

“For me, as soon as I heard Jay sing, I felt like I was in trouble.”

Hoetaek speaks up and Jay forces himself into another exaggerated look of surprise and shoves down the ugly feeling that jumps out at the way you hug one of Hoetaek’s arms.

“Your competitor?” One of them jokes.

Not just in singing, Jay thinks.

“But you did watch Love Me Right, hyung?” Jongwoo asks. Jay really wants this conversation to move on.

“It was so hard to watch Love Me Right.” He watches as Hoetaek shifts so that you can lean more comfortably.

“That’s not the only thing that’s hard to watch right now.” Ricky breathes out. Now Kamden and Matthew are snickering.

Just smile, Jay.

“Honestly, I wanted to give up when I saw you, hyung.” He manages to grit out without giving himself away, hopefully.

Everyone laughs and Jay desperately sends a prayer to the universe to let his pain end. Ironically, it’s Kamden and Matthew who come to his rescue.

“Actually, I’m curious about something. Did I give off an American vibe?”

The conversation swerves towards Matthew’s imitation of Kamden, the apparently routine mispronunciation of Jiwoong’s name and Kamden’s impressive first impression of Ricky’s hair.

By the time they move on to Keita’s first meeting with Zhang Hao, Jay thinks he’s in the clear.

He's not.

Kamden proceeds to smack his arm and he meets eyes with Matthew whose usual bright smile was beginning to border on shit-eating grin territory.

“If you didn’t notice, they’ve been looking at you the whole time we were talking.” Kamden says lowly, Matthew nodding in agreement.

“Nah, you’re capping.”

“No, for real, Kam and I were literally right here giving some top-tier content and all they could see was you.” Matthew insisted.

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“It definitely means something.” Ricky counters because he was apparently listening in on them the whole time while everyone else watched Jiwoong wax poetry over Hao’s violin playing. Jay shakes his head.

“It really doesn’t.”

Kamden looks like he wants to jump on him and start shaking some sense in. Matthew sighs. Ricky just shrugs and lies back down.

“Ah well, we’ll have to see then. I didn’t let Kam slander my hair and my catchphrase for nothing.”

After having to spectate the absolute trainwreck of awkwardness that is Zhang Hao and Kum Junhyeon, there’s the slightest chill that goes down Jay’s spine that he ignores, figuring it must be the weather.

It was definitely not the weather. He should have run while he still had a chance.

“Actually, there’s another pair I want to see.” Matthew speaks up. Suddenly he feels Kamden and Ricky both watching him like hawks as if he’s going to bolt any second now.

After Matthew names you and him, Jay actually wants to bolt. Kamden and Ricky are extremely helpful in explaining to the others the minimal interactions you two have had as the “least close trainees in G-group.” You look like a deer in headlights as Hoetaek gently shoves you towards the middle of the room, whispering something to you before he goes back to his spot.

“Wah they’re both so red.” Jay becomes acutely aware of how much his cheeks are burning as he sits across you. You don’t seem to be any better, making eye contact before looking literally anywhere else.

Well, might as well get over it so he can go back and die of embarrassment.

“Uh, the first time I saw you was during the Star Level test. I thought you were very talented.”

Damn, when did Korean become so hard? Maybe it was the way your hands were holding his, can you feel how fast his pulse is racing? Okay Jay, you can do this, just speedrun it.

“And I really liked the song you performed, it really fit your voice. Your stage outfit was also very pr- very noticeable, it made you stand out. And I really wanted to get to know you more but we were in different groups all the time which really sucked and you don’t know how many times I wished you chose Home so we could perform together or the Star Creators would put us both in Over me and I understand, you’re really perfect for the concepts of your songs and it’s crazy how much I like you, seriously so crazy.”

Pin-drop silence. Three things, in order, that Jay realises.

Speedrunning this might not have been the best idea.

Switching to English midway through the conversation is a skill that he didn’t know he was capable of considering his level of Korean would definitely be more byelingual than actual, intelligent multilingual like Matthew.

He might have confessed his feelings to you. No actually, he did. Fuck, now would be a great time to get on the next plane and fly off to the States and cry to Beomhan for a month. Forget debuting, he’d settle for a nice normal life without the evil editing and the screen time robbing and the utter stress of eliminations.

But before Jay can actually bolt, you speak up.

“Uh- uhm…” You look so unsure that it freezes him there, seated in front of you, holding your hands like it’s his last lifeline.

“I really like you too.”

Everyone gasps and begins murmuring quietly.

“Wait, my English is bad, what are they saying?”

“Finally, they’ve confessed, I knew it.”

“Wait who confessed?”

“That was like an American romance movie, wow.”

Then the clapping starts. Jay tears his eyes away from you for one second to look at Kamden in utter disbelief. His co-conspirators don’t miss a beat.

“Congratulations, you finally did it! Thank fuck.”

“Be happy together, you two!”

And because Ricky apparently wasn’t satisfied with the slander he had put himself through.

“Now kiss.”

Which turned into a chant because even the trainees who didn’t speak English fluently knew what they were talking about. Someone even helpfully throws a blanket over Yujin to protect his eyes.

Jay turns back and finds you giggling. While it looks like embarrassment, now he could feel the way your fingers interlocked with his, your eyes flitting to his lips. The chanting becomes background noise as he leans in, pressing his lips against yours firmly.

Fireworks explode in the background as you pull away.

Everyone applauds with the occasional whistling, oohing as Jay tugs you to sit between his legs, Ricky graciously scooting over to make space.

Kamden claps him on the back and Matthew flashes both of you a thumbs up.

God, he loves hates these guys.

As the conversation settles back down and everyone decides to actually sleep, you sneak another kiss before cuddling up to his side.

Jay smiles. Maybe this is a movie.

synopsis ⇢ you live with the regret of letting go the boy you loved for his dream, but you wanted to see him at least one last time. (part 1)

within the year after he left, you found it hard to adjust to a life where you couldn’t text him any time of the day, see him whenever you pleased, or hear his voice (even if only through the phone). it was difficult adjusting to a life that didn’t have him in it.

whenever you saw something eye-catching, your immediate reaction was to share it with him through a picture. however, every time you were met with the last messages he sent you, reminding you that he was in korea living his dream.

you couldn’t even bring yourself to delete the message thread, which would likely diminish the urge to send him everything after a couple of times of seeing the nonexistence of the thread. it was the last thing you had of him, of the relationship you two had built since you were young, since you were both too immature to understand you had taken your love for granted.

it seemed life wanted to push your pain on you more, offering you an opportunity to study in korea exactly one year from his departure. you were baffled when you received the email, initially thinking it was just another spam email from when you imputed your address into various sites. it was the perfect program for you to study your interest, way better than the one you were currently in.

still, would it really be worth moving all the way to korea, to the place where your first love was pursuing his dreams? it had been a year, a long year of you trying to get over everything. you had almost closed the wound you left yourself with when you asked him to leave you, but were you willing to open it up again?

it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, all of those around you told you to take that chance and to not let an ex keep you from it. though their words were confirming, you hated how their encouragement was analogous to one commonly given to someone who had gotten out of a toxic relationship.

you always found yourself correcting them when they worded it in that manner, reminding them that matthew was nothing less than perfect for you. it only hurt you because you couldn’t be with him even though you two loved each other so much, so much that he was willing to give up his dream for you.

in the end what pushed you to take the opportunity was the conversation you had just a year prior.

“if i had gotten an opportunity to travel far away for a program of the thing i was most passionate about, what would you tell me?”

“i would tell you to take that opportunity.”

it would be hypocritical for you to do this, have him be the one holding you back from your dream when you had sacrificed it all to tell him to follow his.

and so, you accepted it, allowing for you to once again be in the same country as the one you loved.

while in korea, you debated getting into contact with matthew again but decided against it for the better. for one, you didn’t even know how you would find contact with him again, but you also didn’t want to be a distraction to him again. from the moment you two parted, you promised to continue supporting him but only in the background. you didn’t need to involve yourself in his life anymore. you just hoped some sign would show you he was doing well.

and that sign came from one of your roommates, the one who would shove the latest news of the kpop industry down the rest of your roommates’ throats. in all honesty, you filtered out most of the things she said on her tangents.

that was until the topic of the conversation became the upcoming mnet survival show, boys planet. she had huddled all four of you in the kitchen one evening to share about her latest obsession, even compiling all 98 boys onto a slideshow with nothing but their names and some pictures.

you found it ridiculous how she could be so deep in a survival show that hadn’t even started yet with limited information granted day by day. that was why you, once again, tuned her out while she gushed over everything.

that was until she introduced one trainee, the name that left her lips almost leaving you in near cardiac arrest. “seok matthew.”

you eyes immediately darted upward. staring directly at the picture on screen. it was really him, the boy you once–no–the boy you still loved. it was surreal, and a part of you didn’t want to move on from it.

as your roommate moved on, you stopped her, “wait! go back.”

a smirk came upon your roommate’s face, knowing she had you hooked. “so you like seok matthew? he’s from canada, like you, so maybe the vibe that’s what draws you in.”

if only she knew the true history you had, but you didn’t want to reveal that just yet. it was unnecessary to mention. “yeah, can you show me more about him?”

so, as you promised, you would be always supporting matthew in the background throughout his journey to be an idol. you would start with having him be your pick from day 1.

as the show aired, you preached to everyone you came in contact with about voting for matthew. whenever you could, you would ask the new person you came in contact with to download the app on their phone to vote for him. you wanted to do whatever it took to make sure matthew was able to debut. you had to make sure he knew his efforts and sacrifices were worth it.

in those months, you were very diligent in staying up to date with the latest content while not falling behind in your studies, something even you were surprised about as you typically prioritized the former.

your roommate, however, was ecstatic to finally have someone to share her obsessions with. she would update you with the newest content, texting it to you as soon as new videos or photos were posted. she was way further deep down the rabbit hole than you were, so you weren’t surprised she would always stumble upon random predebut videos spread of the boys.

that was why you weren’t completely caught off guard when she came stomping into your room one day, one of the days you actually were trying to study instead of trying to keep up with how matthew was doing on boys planet.

“YOU!” she exclaimed as she slammed open your door, leaving you with a smudge on your notes. you groaned, turning around to give her a glare.

she was still diligent in showing you her fascinating discovery as if you weren’t studying for an important exam. you knew no amount of convincing would make her leave you alone until she got out what she wanted.

as expected, it was another one of the predebut videos floating around twitter. “and?” you asked, already going back to look at the slides your professor provided.

“THAT’S YOU!”

with such proclamation, you dropped your pencil, hearing it fall to the floor. you finally put full focus on the video, and lo and behold, it was you, you and matthew in one of the dance performances done back at your dance studio. well, now your secret was out.

“oh yeah, that is me,” you tried to brush off, even though you were freaking out that so many people had seen that leaked video.

“and you didn’t tell me? that you know seok matthew! all this time i thought you were just a fan really interested. you…you know him!”

you plugged your ear to block her squealing. a damaged eardrum was definitely not what you needed. “yeah because i knew you’d react like that. it’s not like it’s something special. we just danced together. we were…friends.”

your heart felt stabbed when you said those words. friends. you and matthew were more than just friends. you were soulmates. both of you knew that, but now it didn’t matter. no one needed to know the two of you had something. it was for safety, both of his idol image and for you in case he had any crazy fans.

“then, you need to go to the finale,” she insisted, “he needs to see you and know you’ve been supporting him!”

now, here was the conversation you weren’t ready for. you weren’t even sure if you were ready to see him again. if you met eyes with him, would you just break down crying? would you be happy for him?

you had already thought about going to one of the previous mission showcases, but you chickened out last minute, worrying about all the hypotheticals. this would be your last chance, but you didn’t even know if you should take it.

“i don’t know about that,” you mumbled, averting your gaze away from her.

“c’mon! you have to! you are the matthew supporter. everyone i’ve met on campus is voting for matthew because of you. he needs to know how supportive you’ve been of him. what more to show that then coming to it yourself?”

“but i might not get in. what’s the point? there’s so many people who want to go,” you commented.

she rolled her eyes at you. “well, if you continue to have that attitude, how are you going to get in. i am not going to stop bothering you until you at least try to get in.”

“i have an exam to–”

“i said. i’m not leaving until you at least try to sign up to get a spot.”

you sighed in defeat. once she had her mind set, there was no changing it. if you wanted to have study time you were going to have to do what she asked. so you did, pulling up the form to fill out. even if you had done it all for her to leave, you didn’t really expect anything out of it.

well, surprise! you were going to the boy’s planet finale.

oh it was packed. crowds lined up outside the venue for the finale, you began to feel like backing out. being squished amongst other fans was definitely not how you wanted to spend your evening, especially if you were probably going to be far from the stage. sure, it was amazing regardless to see how far matthew had come, but a part of you also wanted to have your own moment with him, one where you could look him in the eye with a look to tell him how proud you were.

everyone wanted that, to be able to be near the stage so they could be known by their pick. that was why there had already been hundreds, maybe even thousands, of people by the time you got there.

the line was endless, and the only thing you were grateful for was the amount of people selling slogans and fans for the boys. you had planned to make your own custom sign for the finale, but due to many unforeseen situations, you didn’t have the time to do so. at least with the amount of people waiting out of the venue you were able to hold a cloth slogan in your hand.

you thought it was adorable, his name printed across it on one side and a picture of him during “say my name” on the other. it was just the thing you needed to keep as a memory of this day, probably hanging it up in your room after the showcase.

you checked the time on your phone, realizing there were still many hours until the doors were to open. how were you going to kill time in this long line? social media. social media was the only answer for someone like you who was standing alone without a companion to converse with.

you found yourself so immersed on your social media feed that you didn’t realize the two familiar people approaching you, only noticing them when one grabbed onto your shoulder.

over your shoulder, you were met with two very familiar faces, ones that you haven’t seen for nearly two years. “i thought that was you!” she exclaimed.

you gave her a smile before relaxing your shoulders for a hug. “it’s been too long, yaebin.”

making sure to acknowledge the other person, you immediately nodded your head into a half-bow. “mo–” you paused, realizing it wasn’t as appropriate to call her that anymore considering you were not in a relationship with matthew. you also didn’t want to stir up any rumors considering how many people were around, so you quickly corrected yourself, “auntie, i hope you have been doing well.”

she gave you a reassuring smile before leaning in, “you can always call me mom. i will always consider you a part of our family.”

it was warming to know that she still considered you that way, even when you were no longer “formally” affiliated with them. you always loved matthew’s family, and you were glad they still loved you after all these years.

“so, you’re here to support matthew, right?”

you gave an excited nod, “i really wanted to come out here to see him perform. after all, i’ve always just wanted to support him. thai is the least i can do.”

“do you want to stand with us?”

“what.”

stand…with matthew’s family…in the section designated for people the trainees were close to. that would mean you had to face him once and for all, but were you ready to do that?

“you should come with us. you’ll get to see him!”

shaking your head, you were unsure about how to react to such an opportunity. mixed signals went off all over your head. “i don’t think that’s the best idea. is that even allowed?”

“well, i’ll find a way. i’m making sure you get up there with us. if anything is going to motivate matthew to do well today, it’s going to be seeing you.”

with a response like that, how could you refuse?

you nervously stood amongst the rest of the close friends and family of the finalists. luckily, there was actually space for you to move around and breathe, so you weren’t hyperventilating from your nerves. you just…didn’t know how to feel about it all.

what were you going to do now? there was a guaranteed chance he would see you, so there was no more running away. you were going to see matthew after nearly two years of your breakup.

it felt so unreal. you thought his text about you two crossing paths again would be something for the distant future, not in a mere two years time. maybe it really was fate pulling you two back together.

actually. there was no maybe. it was for certain.

you knew that as soon as you saw him again, his figure prominent amongst the rest of the boys. there was no other person who could draw your attention like seok matthew.

and then he spotted his family, waving excitedly to both of them.

his sister strenuously wove back, but she also made sure to bring attention to you who was standing a couple of feet away from them. she pointed in your direction, urging him to look over.

and so he did. that was the first time you two made eye contact again. you could tell he was surprised, his eyes widening and his mouth agape.

you tried to put on a smile because you were happy, but the tears came out first. you were just too happy that you cried. this was really him. the one you loved so dearly. the one who so dearly loved you.

even while on stage and televised, he still tried to calm you down. oh how he was the perfect man. still, they wouldn’t stop, so you motioned for him to not worry about you as you hid behind your slogan, letting all the tears fall out. that way, you wouldn’t have the energy left to cry later on in the showcase.

oh but you were so wrong.

you thought you had run your eyes dry after your first reunion, but you were proven wrong during the debut lineup announcement.

you held tightly onto your slogan as you anticipated the remainder of the members' announcements.

“seok matthew!”

all at once, your legs gave out upon hearing his name, falling directly onto your knees as a pool of tears began to form around you. he…really did it. the boy you let go two years ago for his dream was able to achieve it! the pain you endured through that first year, the pain you still felt in these moments, they weren’t for nothing.

you wouldn’t say it was worth it because it wasn’t. that empty feeling, that hole in your heart for the past two years, you would not even wish it upon your worst enemy. however, seeing how much he shined on that stage, even when he was profusely crying, made it almost seem worth it.

almost.

your eyes found the reserves of tears you had been holding back, all of them coming out at once in a mixture of sadness and joy. the sounds of everyone screaming was blocked out in your brain, allowing yourself to pretend you were sobbing in your own world. you were only taken out of it by a hand on your back, asking if you were okay.

you were not okay.

even you were unsure how you managed to stop crying. you thought you never would, but you somehow forced yourself to.

anxiously, you were now waiting with matthew’s family, his sister insisting you come with them to see him backstage. this time, you weren’t hesitant to take her offer. you needed to see him and tell him how proud you were.

you bit your lip, staring at the door as the rest of the families were, waiting for the contestants to walk through to meet with their loved ones.

there they came. a crowd of boys funneled through the door, all of them coming directly to their families. you spotted him right away, his fluffy hair being the largest indicator for you.

and for the first time, you called out to him. “matthew!”

upon hearing your voice, his eyes darted around the room, trying to find you. when he did, it was a matter of steps before you two were face-to-face again, nearly two years after you two parted ways.

for a few seconds, you two only stared at one another, pausing right before you could make contact. he looked at you like you were the most sacred on the planet, eyes glimmering as he wondered if this was all real, if you were really in front of him in flesh.

he was the first to break silence as he placed his hands on your shoulders, as if he needed confirmation that you were real. “you. you’re here.”

you laughed, surprised the normally expressive boy was at a lost of words. you only nodded. “yeah, i was debating on coming. i’ve always thought of trying to go to one of the mission stages, but never did in the end. one of my roommates convinced me to try, so here i am.”

“you live in korea now?”

again, you nodded. “i moved about a year ago for a great program opportunity, but i was scared to get in contact with you. i really missed you, so i thought it would only open up more wounds than needed. you also needed to work without distractions. i mean, look at you now!”

he shook his head. he always seemed to be shaking his head to your claims. he did it two years ago, and he did it now. “what?”

before he spoke, he moved his hands from your shoulders to take your own into his. you could feel how clammy they were from nervousness but also the tremble they had. you looked up at him, the concern evident in your eyes.

he looked like he was about to cry. “you should have tried to reach me.”

your eyebrows furrowed. what was he talking about?

“you, you could never be a distraction to me. it was actually you who kept me going these past years. there were so many times where i wanted to give up, but then i remembered everything you told me before i left, about how much you loved me, the love that made you willing to let go of all we had.

you were so strong, so i wanted to be strong for you. it was really hard for me to be so far away from you and my family, but i always thought about you. because you love me, i was able to push through the hard times. because you love me, i was willing to continue during the times of uncertainty whether i debuted or not. because you love me, i was able to make it. i wanted to make it, so i could fulfill the promise i made to you, the one where we’d meet once we both were closer to achieving our dreams. it’s because you love me, that i can see you here again today.”

this was a moment all too familiar, a speech to proclaim love. you now understood how he must have felt two years ago when you did the same.

your eyes threatened to spill more tears, but you didn’t want to erupt into a sobbing fit again, not while this was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of your life, the moment you were reunited with him. still, no matter how hard you tried, a few stray ones came through.

they were promptly wiped way by matthew’s thumbs in an attempt to calm you down. “shhh,” he consoled, “it’s okay i’m here. no need to cry.”

you pulled away from his touch, trying to gather yourself. you looked up towards the light to force yourself to put the tears away. you tried to respond, but everything came out in small blurbs due to the circulating emotions. “i’m sorry…it just feels so unreal to me. that we can see each other again.”

“does this mean we can love each other again?” he quickly asked.

and that was when your eyes moved from the light to his face, anticipation written all over it. you smiled at him.

“i don’t think we can love again if we never stopped loving in the first place.”

his smile mirrored your own as he stepped forward, finally closing the gap between your bodies. he wrapped his arms around you, holding you in an embrace as if his life depended on it.

after all, he didn’t want you to let go again.

y/n feels hopeless.

kim taerae is his best friend, or was his best friend? he doesn't even know if he gets that label anymore. he's observed, watched with close eyes as the male he considers his best friend in the whole wide world slowly drifted away from him.

it's ironic, because he was the one who suggested that they join boys planet together. he was the one so excited about joining the show with his best friend, the two of them stayed up together giggling about how great it would be for the two of them to debut together.

that all seems to have flown out of the window now.

y/n knows mnet is fishy, he knows they evil edit whoever they want to for the sake of publicity and attention. he assumed that he would sort of be safe because he was a korean trainee.

oh how wrong he was.

it seemed that in the flip of a switch, everyone apart of the korean public was against him, like all it took for them to now hate his guts was mnet pulling a little trick.

he hates how overly emotional he is, because he had a breakdown about it a few hours after filming had been finished.

and of course, taerae was there. he was there to console him, comfort him, give him solace as he let y/n cry in his shoulder.

that was before he became.. well— distant.

the last real conversation he had with taerae didn't really end on a good note.

"you.. don't want me in the team?"

"no— y/n that's not what i mean" taerae says in an instant. he takes in a breath, biting his inner cheek. "it's just that, we have to kick someone out, they won't let us keep everyone".

"and i was the first choice?"

"well we talked about it—"

"without me?"

taerae shifts his gaze away, not saying more than he has to. y/n sighs, he's a chronic people pleaser, he wants to scream and shout and put out every single complaint he has, but he just decides to deal with it.

"i'm sorry, i'm being too difficult" he mutters, a wave of disappointment washing over him. "it's alright, i'll find another team that'll let me in".

if it's not too late…

"y/n, i—"

"it's okay, rae-yah" he says simply, smiling painfully as he stares at his best friend. "i understand, we can talk about this later, okay?"

taerae sighs, glancing around the room. "i'm sorry" he whispers.

"it's okay".

but it wasn't. of course it wasn't.

that conversation was in february, february. y/n watched two months go by and his relationship with his best friend has been deteriorating ever since they had that conversation about y/n getting kicked out of the back door team.

taerae's barely around anymore, he notices. now, when he sees y/n, instead of hugging him to death showering him with tons of affection, they just share awkward hi's and hello's.

it's not only him that notices, everyone else does too, especially their fellow wakeone friends.

"did you and taerae get into a fight or something?"

park hanbin has always been head on, he isn't afraid to bring up stuff he knows other people have been hiding.

"what? what do you mean by that?"

"are you serious y/n? you two could barely even leave each other alone for two seconds when you guys auditioned together, and now you guys barely acknowledge each other's existences anymore! it's shocking, that's what it is".

y/n stays silent, staring at his friend as if he's said something shocking, but his expression changes, gaze falling down to the floor as he realizes that hanbin is right.

"taerae doesn't need me anymore, he's made it extremely clear.."

"if i told past you that you said that in the future you'd probably have a heart attack".

y/n sighs. "hanbin, what is this even supposed to mean?"

"y/n, you know i love you, right?" he begins, y/n doesn't respond, biting his tongue. "taerae is your best friend in the whole entire world, it's not like you two to be on bad terms. i hate seeing the two of you upset, and it's so obvious that you wanna talk to each other, i know that it might take some time but you have to make up".

y/n takes in hanbin's words, processes them.

they have to make up.

y/n manages to catch taerae.

well— not catch per se, y/n can barely even spot him in the practice room full of eighteen other boys. taerae is too immersed in his conversation with junhyeon to even notice his presence.

y/n feels embarrassed, he turns around to walk away with his eyes closed. he's about to walk out of the door when a shout catches his attention.

"y/n, wait!"

he recognizes that voice, that voice, that voice that he loved listening to all the time, that voice which would whisper overly sweet compliments and comfort him whenever he felt he wasn't good enough.

"y/n, can we talk?" taerae asks. he isn't exactly casual about it, it's awkward between them now, something they never imagined happening.

"outside.." he clarifies, gesturing to all of the other people in the room, meaning that the conversation he wanted to have with him was probably pretty personal.

"sure- ah! okay!"

before y/n can even fully respond, taerae drags him by the hand outside of the practice room. he can't recall the last time taerae held his hand, at all, it's funny, really.

"okay, taerae, what is this about—"

"i'm sorry!" he immediately blurts, letting go of y/n's hand in embarrassment as he looks away with a red face.

"sorry for what?"

"for doing that to you" taerae mutters. "i excluded you, i made you feel horrible because i kicked you out of the team and i've been avoiding you like the plague, that makes me a bad friend and i can't stand myself for what i did to you!"

y/n is used to this.

he's used to having conversations like this with friends, all of his ex best friends who just couldn't stand when he finally put his foot down and stopped wanting to be used by them.

but taerae would never do that—

right?

"it's okay, taerae" he says. that's not what he wants to say, of course, but he couldn't think of any other response to that sentence. "i forgive you".

but it wasn't okay.

of course it wasn't okay.

what is y/n's problem? why can't just stand up for himself? why does he let people walk all over him as if he doesn't have a mouth which he can use to speak up for himself?

that conversation didn't turn out too well either,

because they had a fight only a few hours after that.

y/n realized after he let out all of his thoughts that he sounded a little selfish, much to his own horrible thoughts. he feels as if he did something horrible, despite all of his honesty.

and taerae simply seems so nonchalant about everything.

y/n wonders.

how did they go from being the best of friends attached at the hip to now barely being able to look at each other without it being awkward?

it scares him.

every other day, he feels himself getting even more hopeless, knowing he had messed up everything and that nothing would ever be normal between them again.

were they even friends anymore?

it's like taerae is haunting him. every other thing he can't help but think of taerae, kim fucking taerae, the one who would always stare at him with lovestruck eyes, the one who could resolve any problem they had, the one who knew each and every one of his fears, the one who he had to constantly deny his relationship with because they looked like they were utterly in love.

maybe he was.. maybe.

but it's not like it mattered anymore, did it now? they weren't friends or anything, they didn't fit that label anymore.

which is ironic to say, because it was assumed their friendship would've lasted the longest.

"that was dumb— your dumb!"

"i am not!" y/n whined, stomping his feet on the floor as he stared at his best friend. "i should be telling that to you, with your stupid glasses! you looked like an idiot!" he retorts, making taerae gasp and place a hand on his chest, directly where his heart was located.

"i did not look like an idiot!" taerae rolls his eyes. "you did, as always!" he says, and y/n mimics his previous gasp, appalled.

"i wouldn't be saying this if you didn't insult me first.." y/n mutters under his breath, yelping when he felt taerae push him.

"gosh couples! cut it out already you guys are annoying!" hanbin yells from across the room. "get a room or something!"

"were not a couple!" the two best friends shout in unison. they also seem to blush in unison, faces turning red and heating up at the comment. taerae scratches his arm, too flustered for his own good. y/n laughs, though his face is also red, he doesn't want to make it obvious.

"how do they even think were dating?" taerae starts, ironically as he reaches over for y/n's hand to look at the rings on his fingers.

"i don't know, we aren't even a couple, are we?"

taerae furrows his eyebrows, as if the question confused him. he stops staring down at y/n's rings, and looks back up at his face. his breath hitches when he realizes they're a little too close.

his eyes go wide and he freezes for a moment, but then he shakes off whatever thoughts he was having and smiles. "why are you asking that like the answer isn't obvious?"

"well i don't know what you think" y/n responds, clicking his tongue as he decides to intertwine their fingers. taerae felt the cold metal brush against his fingers for a moment, and he has this unknown feeling. "maybe you do think were a couple and i'm just oblivious to everything—"

"shut up, y/n" taerae scoffs. "no, were not a couple, even with how much you want us to be".

"me? you want us to be one, you can't resist me".

"don't let your ego suffer when you find out your being delusional".

"nope, you love me".

"that's a big word, don't say it again".

summary: Despite being trainee's from the same company, Park Gunwook hated you. You never got an explanation so how will competing against him on the MNET survival show 'Boys Planet' end?

a/n: anon, I hope you like this! I chose to write the reader as gender neutral as I want to cater my writing to as many people as possible, so if you want to pretend that BP is gender inclusive or not, you can still read!

DISCLAIMER: Gunwook is literally a giant baby in real life, this is not meant to portray him in a mean way, I literally cannot imagine this guy acting like he does to the reader in this story, he looks like he can't hurt a fly, so take this story with a whole tonne of salt!

You could remember standing by the other group of Jellyfish trainees before they went to perform their initial 'Star Level Test' performance, the judging from one particular trainee making the atmosphere for both you and his three teammates almost suffocating. You couldn't believe that he was going to act like a child on national television because you and him had some unspoken rivalry.

You watched their performance from the TV in the backstage area, analysing and trying to understand what the judges wanted from a good performance, being shocked yourself when none of your company mates had gotten a desired 'ALLStar' ranking. It made you want it even more, wiling to give everything to do both your company and yourself proud. Maybe, being better than Park Gunwook played a role in your wishes to rank the highest, maybe it didn't. No one would know anyway.

You had been given the iconic StayC song 'ASAP' for the initial test, which you were thankful for as you loved the song and had also learned the main points of choreography with your friends from school when it released.

You were confident in your dancing and singing ability, but still wanted to improve on your rapping, so you hoped that the Star Masters liked your performance enough to let you showcase your talents and continue improving your weaknesses.

You walked out onto the stage, introduced yourself and then, a blur. You couldn't really remember what happened after that, the memory next in order being Choi Youngjoon, a well appreciated and idolised choreographer, telling you that you had received an ALLStar ranking. Gasping, you thanked the judges immensely, so proud of yourself, looking up at the trainees who looking a slight bit scared of your talent, and smiling even more. You could debut no problem.

Learning the signal song felt like a breeze to you, the choreography came naturally and you were extra thankful for your ALLStar ranking because you could learn the choreography at the front of the room, however, you felt upset for the trainees with the NOStar ranking, who were at the back of the room and could barely see the StarMasters.

After rehearsing for a couple of days with fellow ALLStars, you had the signal song evaluation, aiming to get the centre, so you could demonstrate your talents to audiences early, and not have to worry about scraping through eliminations. You wanted to debut so badly, and were willing to do almost anything to get it.

You went into the evaluation room, danced and sung as hard as you could, but apparently it wasn't enough for the judge's to give you signal centre. Don't get me wrong, you were over the moon that you had kept your ALLStar ranking but still, it was hurtful that the judges thought you weren't charismatic enough to be the centre, instead choosing to give the role to Zhang Hao and Sung Hanbin instead.

You walked back into the room where the other trainees sat, having either completed their evaluation, or were still waiting for it, sitting back down with the ALLStars, choosing not to talk much for the rest of the day, too upset with your failed chance at becoming centre.

Getting back to the dorm that day, you decided to wash up and go straight to your room, not wanting to see anyone else, but on the way, you saw Gunwook. You both looked at each other and you could tell that he was going to say something snarky, so you just looked down and walked past him.

Confused, Gunwook called out, "y/n?", you turned back to him, teary eyed, and just shook your head, "I don't want to deal with you and your comments right now Gunwook. Just do me a favour and leave me alone for the night please." You then walked into your room, shutting the door quietly and lying down on the bed choosing to sleep it off.

The next day, you felt better, having thought it through, deciding that yes, Zhang Hao and Sung Hanbin were both the better options, they had great chemistry that you probably wouldn't have been able to replicate with either of them. You felt happy for your fellow rank mates, wishing them well and saying you were proud of them, despite the small tugs in your heart, telling you that you were still disappointed in yourself.

You thanked Keita immensely for picking you to be a part of the dubbed 'Avengers' team to dance to 'Kill This Love', but then proceeding to hit him repeatedly for picking the song that Park Gunwook would also be competing with. You didn't know how you were going to make it through practicing in the same room with him without one of you killing the other.

No murder happened that week but some members of your team wanted to kill Gunwook for making the taunting comments towards you, belittling and making you feel insecure about your clear talents.

"Remember when you failed the evaluation for signal centre y/n? You're going to fail this challenge too." "How do you feel about K team beating you y/n? Already used to it?" "Damn you can't even hit the high note right, Hwanhee hyung will show you how it's done."

The comments were fine to deal with at first, with you choosing to be the bigger person, but slowly, as the week went on, you felt more and more depressed, and everyone in your team could see it. So when the final comment came, the final blow, the most hurtful one really, it surprised no one when you walked out of the room in tears, too upset to even care that the cameras were following your every move, following you into one of the neighbouring practice rooms to find one of your closest friends, Ricky.

No one would tell you what was said in the practice room after that, only that Gunwook was scolded badly by both Hwanhee and Zhang Hao, the pair angry and disappointed in the boy for how he had acted and what he had said.

According to Keita, Gunwook found you twenty minutes later, but seeing you in Ricky's arms was something he didn't like and so he chose not to apologise. He couldn't describe why seeing you so close to the yuehua trainee tugged at his heartstrings, but either way, he decided that he was just going to not talk to you. Ignoring you is easier than apologising when you're wrapped up in another man's arms.

After talking with Ricky, you were angry. So angry. So furious and humiliated by how you had let Gunwook talk to you that you forced that energy into your performance, something that paid off well apparently. The phrase 'G-TEAM WIN' plastered across the TV felt so satisfying. You chose not to look at K-Team, wanting to relish in the win as well as first place, which had been so graciously given to you by the audiences.

Your performance went viral when it aired, the audience and watchers were amazed by how you looked on stage, so captivating and so strong.

Now came the second test, where each trainee would be put into a song category that played to certain strengths, rapping, singing or dancing. But to spice things up, MNET chose to add another category, the 'All Rounder' category. Managing to have placed 7th in the first eliminations, you were one of the last to choose, surprised that there were only four people stood in the All Rounder section, two in 'Cheers' by Seventeen and two in 'ASAP' by StayC.

Every trainee in the room watched you walk over confidently to the All Rounder section, thinking you were going to choose ASAP again, as you had performed it before and had done well enough to intimidate the room of trainees with your talents.

But you didn't do that, instead choosing to go Cheers, standing next to Woongki and Haruto, who had both been pushed into the All Rounder category, and had eventually chosen Cheers. As the higher ranking trainees picked, the people who were pushed out of their spot on the desired teams came over to the All Rounder section, leaving Chen KuanRui, Haruto, Seowon and Woongki in your team.

You were thankful that you had four other trainees in your team who were all talented, and eventually, in the final performance, you were all talented enough win first place, being able to go to MCountdown with your friends.

Celebrating with your teammates when finding out you had also won first place led to Haruto whispering in your ear, "Look at Gunwook real quick for me."

Choosing to follow his orders, you glance over to Tomboy team where Gunwook was looking at you, a small smile on his face that was quickly dropped when he realised that you had noticed, a scowl replacing the cute smile that once adorned his face.

As time passed, the penultimate challenge came before the final, the 'Artist Battle' Challenge, where each team would be placed into an original song and have to learn it, but the twist was that the audience would choose where the trainees went, and if you didn't like the song, oh well.

You had been placed in 'Supercharger' Team with some close friends and some younger trainees, and you enjoyed your time with them, but without doubt your favourite memory made with one of your teammates, Ollie, came on the Planet Sports Day.

I mean, getting shoved over by Yoon Jongwoo and spraining your ankle because of his lack of spatial awareness was not your favourite part of the day, but sitting with Ollie, chatting away about his home country was wonderful. You were happy to have made a friend like him.

Ollie and you continued to gossip whilst his hand was being bandaged - you felt sorry for the rest of your teammates, having two injured dancers on the team - until a Park Gunwook also walked into the med tent, a hand holding his head.

He explained that he had a migraine and was advised by the producers that he needed to sit out for the next hour or two until he felt better, sitting opposite you.

The friendly and talkative atmosphere quickly drained, stilted conversation happening between Ollie and Gunwook, the former of which attempted to get you to converse with the latter, but his trying didn't bring any conversation from you - you were still upset by his comments from the first challenge, but also confused as to why he had been looking at you so nicely after winning first place in the second challenge.

Talking to him was not worth your efforts it seemed to you, as it always ended in hurt on your end. But seeing his small pout when describing his so called "earth-shattering headache" was too addicting to look away from.

Unfortunately, due to the sprained ankle that hindered you from performing to the best of your ability, the showcase of the 'Artis Battle' songs left you unsatisfied and disappointed in yourself. You weren't terrible, nor did you bring your team down you were told, but still, you liked being the best and you were not the best on that stage in your eyes.

The feelings of disappointment and hurt slowly affected you, causing you to leave the room where you could watch the performances from backstage, and to sit in the corridor, begging your eyes to stop crying and ruining the makeup that the makeup artists had so gracefully made you look beautiful with.

Your efforts were fruitless though, the tears couldn't stop coming and at this point you had been gone so long that Gunwook and the En Garde team were leaving the room to perform their song.

Gunwook noticed you sat in the corridor, leaning against the wall immediately and started to move towards you but unfortunately, Ollie had made it before him, hugging you and holding you close as you sobbed in his arms.

That nagging, tugging at heartstrings feeling came back again in Gunwook, but he chose to ignore it once more, moving to comfort you as well. Ollie spoke up before he got too close though,

"Gunwook hyung, I don't think they want to talk to you right now, you've done enough in the past. Just go and get ready to perform please?"

"I'll do what they want, not what you think they want, Ollie" Gunwook replies, looking at you.

You look back but soon shake your head, not willing to talk.

You hadn't said anything to Gunwook, but it felt like you had just killed him. He couldn't describe why seeing you so upset was hurting him too, he couldn't describe why you in Ollie's arms hurt. And worst of all, he couldn't explain why, even after crying for more than twenty minutes at this point, you still looked more beautiful than anyone else on this earth.

"Gunwookie" Hui calls. "Let's just go, they look like they need space." Hui grabs Gunwook by the arm, dragging the boy lightly to the mic area, where they were to get suited up and ready for the performance that was next.

You were devastated, but surprisingly, you weren't the most upset person in the room by your elimination.

Tears were shed almost immediately by the boy sat on the N.12 seat, and there was no other explanation by his sudden emotion than he had realised how he would miss you.

Not miss making fun of you, poking at your insecurities because it made himself well better and less inferior compared to your own talents, not miss gloating around you when he won the challenges just like you, not miss talking about you to other trainees, saying white lies that made you look bad.

No. He'd miss you. He'd miss seeing your face everyday. He'd miss being around you. He'd miss hearing your laugh from across the lunch room when talking to your friends.

It took you being eliminated for Park Gunwook to realise that he wasn't jealous of you, he was in love with you. And the emotions that hurt him when he saw you with Ollie and Ricky, the emotions that made him upset when he saw you cry, they were all because he was in love with you.

He wanted to take it all back immediately, go back in time and tell himself that the last thing he should do is be horrible. The last thing he should do is make you cry, the last thing he should do is poke fun at your insecurities because he felt better when you did badly.

The first thing he should do in this moment is run to you and tell you how he feels. And that's exactly what he did.

Filming ended and the eliminated trainees, your 'supercharger' team included, joined in a group hug, all comforting each other as you realised you had failed in achieving your dream.

A hand pulled you away from the trainees, into a nearby room and pulling you into a chest. A chest which you soon realised to be Gunwook's.

"I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry. Words can't even describe how sorry I am, i'm such a fool y/n, I shouldn't have said what I did, I should have just seen how in love with you I am."

"You're in love with me?" You ask, cutting him off from his ramble.

'Yes. And I'm an idiot for not seeing it earlier. I understand if you want to get rid of me, never see me again, says the word and you'll never hear from me again, but I just need to tell you. I need you to know."

"I don't know if I can forgive you for what you have done to me, Gunwook. Do you know how much pain you put me through, for what an ego boost?"

"I do, y/n, and I'll keep apologising for the rest of my life."

"I guess I need to apologise too, I've said hurtful things too. I'm sorry for what I have said Gunwook, thank you for your own apology." You reply, brushing a tear cascading down his face away, caressing his cheek a little.

"Look", you begin. "Give me some time to think. I need to wait, to think once I'm no longer devastated about the elimination." You pause, "If you debut, then I'll think about letting you take me on a date. If you debut, we are going to sit down and talk about this. Just because I've liked you for so long, it doesn't mean I will forgive you so easi-"

"You like me too?" He interrupts, too excited to even think about the final part of your sentence.

"Yes, unfortunately. I want us to work this out, so you better debut Park Gunwook, or I swear to god, I will make you go through the exact same hell you've put me through in this competition."

"Yes ma'am." He salutes at you jokingly. "I look forward to our date when I debut."

"Good." You smile at him.

eee nari was so excited!!! she absolutely adored the song and couldnt wait to perform it live in front of fans

also she got so much closer with the backup dancers she loves them

the video starts with a girl seeing her lover drive off with another girl while sitting in a diner. instead of being upset by the sight, she decides to have fun - drinking a milkshake, dancing freely, “living like the flowers”. the girl reinvents herself, as the music video goes on, with new clothes, a new outlook, and new found freedom; demonstrated in the way she sheds the clothes of solid colors and dances around in an outfit of flowers. at the end of the music video, with a new found strength, the woman finds herself in the same diner with her friends dancing, before exiting for good.

so the mv starts off with nari sitting in an empty booth in an empty retro styled diner, dressed in light blue flared jeans with a white cropped top. her cherry red lips are wrapped around a straw, drinking a vanilla milkshake as she watches her lover open the passenger door for another girl before the two drive off.

despite the fact that she should've been sad, her eyes narrow in the direction of the car before pushing aside her milkshake and climbing over the table. she grabs her milkshake again and throws away the straw, chugging the milkshake as the music starts.

when she finishes her drink, the vanilla milkshake gets on her mouth and she wipes it away, staring it into the camera.

as she sings, she starts to dance in the diner as the other customers continue to eat and talk, seemingly not seeing her.

as the lyrics continue, nari 'reinvents' herself— "i'm gonna live like a flower, i’ll be myself. can’t nobody stop me now" she gets rid of her clothes, which seem to be only worn because of her ex lover.

she continues on with that her ex lover will regret leaving her once they see how she changed— she's more confident, unafraid to be herself.

the music video ends in the same place it started, dancing in the diner.

when the music ends, she exits the diner arm in arm with a friend as it's completely dark outside. she can't see anything until a light shows up, it's the headlights of her ex lover's car. she stares into the dark car for a few moments before smirking slightly, turning her head and walking away with her friend. it's over now.

so ... while nari had fun promoting and seeing actual fans cheer for her ... there were some bad times

to start off, she got so much hate comments from akgaes because she got 2 songs and not 1

they thought it was unfair and this went on for FOREVER like they were still mentioning this shit in 2023

but not as bad as her first dating scandal😭 but thats a story for another time, anyways…

it wasnt her fault, though :(

they they even went so far as to saying she did disgusting favors for yg to get the ep :/

she had to turn off her comments for months but she still got dms on instagram sigh

and of course yg never defended her

The astrology of Jay Chang

Jay's birthtime has not been confirmed so ignore the houses!!

To give a quick rundown if you don't know who he is.

Jay is a former contestant of Mnet's survival show called "Boys Planet" where boys from different countries had to compete to debut in a new boy group. Ever since this man was announced, everyone and their MAMA have been tearing this young man to SREADS. Went as far to crate false rumors against him to ruin his career. Though what has he done to deserve this malicious amount of hate?

This WILL contain BP spoilers!

His Asteroid "Webb" (3041) is in Scorpio at 27 degrees, and let me tell you, I let out a chuckle seeing that. If you were not in the Boys Planet fandom when this happened, people basically said they didn't like him because "he was annoying/they didn't like how he talked," which basically shows he was hated for speech (Gemini rules the mouth). Also, he just got hate trains for no reason; it's like people woke up deciding to hate on him. (He HAS to be a Scorpio rising somehow because he was also criticized for his looks.)

Asteroid "Nemesis" (128) in his supposed 12th house (12th house rules over enemies) again shows he got hate in the spotlight (5 degrees) and for basically no reason.

Now if his asteroid "Asia" (67) is in the 8th house then that explains why he is unpopular among Asian fans. Mnet would constantly sabotage him, giving him no screentime and pushing Korean trainees than him even though this man is INSANLY talented (Even a vocal coach of SM the company known for powerhouse vocals said he had better vocals then, that should tell you a LOT!). At the end of BP he ranked 10th place which stunned and angered many (including myself). He was ranked 3rd in global votes but due to the xenophobic nature of some Asian fans he was ranked 17th place in Korean votes :( like.. (in one episode he had 1 million+ global votes but 60k Korean votes, 60K!!)

Dwarf Planet "Eris" (136199) in can indicate being hated on for being "annoying" so it being in his 10th house kinda says a lot...

Let's take a look at the busy 6th house!

Asteroid "Fan" (151590) in Sagittarius conjunct Pluto. Us Jaystar's are a very big powerful fandom. We also come from many different countries as well and we have been CARRYING this man in votes (if not of kvotes being prioritized more than gvotes he would have debuted smh) The Gemini degree shows his fans have been very vocal on Mnet's unfair treatment towards him too. Chiron in his possible 6th house shows he must have been affected by his open enemies too. I can only imagine his mental state. Also mars in conjunct asteroid fan and again Jaystars have been aggressive and motivated in helping him succeed (even going as far as to get him into HYBE labels lmfao)

Lilith in Aquarius. Yeah, he was disliked for being unique and not being like other trainees was. He's wasian, he has a unique face, he has a fantastic singing voice (just pay attention to asteroid singer in Aries real quick!) and him having ADHD as well. 11 degrees shows he was disliked online too.

Luckily, he has hope as I want to talk about his Jupiter conjunct Saturn. Jupiter is lucky, fast-paced etc. Saturn is the opposite of that. Satrun is the restrictions of life. I feel like with every rejection he faces, with every negative things that comes his way it will reproduce into something amazing for him and he will reap what he sows when the time is right.

Namjoon has never had a heart condition?? And the only surgery he had was a septum deviation surgery on his nose. It went smoothly and his life was never at risk?! And the band + bang pd played a prank on him in the early years where he got "scolded" as BTS's leader and was asked for his last chance if he would like to go solo because he could make it solo or stay with BTS. Jin stopped Suga from committing suicide.... in their fictional universe during HYYH BU.... Nothing to do with real-life, just their fake CHARACTERS. Good lord. My post over hyyh bu here for anyone who wants to read more about it.

Yoongi did have a car accident pre-debut. He was hit by a car while he was riding his bike doing his delivery job. It's what caused such bad damage to his shoulder at the time and what he ultimately had shoulder surgery for to give him more mobility and help with his pain at the end of 2021. His parents weren't supportive of his rapping career aspirations at first, he spoke about that as well before, but they are very proud of him now. And he alluded to struggles with suicide or self harm, at least major depression, in the past during his song The Last. That's what that flatline sound many believe is what that means. He also mentioned his shoulder injury in that song too.

Jhope has never said that his dad thought he was a disappointment. He did say that his dad opposed his doing nothing but dance practice at first when he was younger but his mom supported him during his song MAMA. And he did talk during a vlive about how his dad wanted him to focus more on his studies and less on dance and that he once danced in front of his dad with no music for him to show his passion when his dad asked, but that now more than anyone he is supportive. Jimin had some concerning diets and issues with wanting to lose weight and the idea of needing to keep his perfect abs, but he didn't starve himself to almost dying. That's an incredible exaggeration. They ALL also did some concerning diets in those earlier years. Jimin took it a bit farther, but nothing like that. And idk what they even mean by Tae's. Changed because of Jhope getting hate? I've never heard anything like this. Of course when Hobi was going through a hard time, he was there for him and supportive and encouraging and of course Tae had grown and changed through the years, but idk what implication is being attempted here but it's an odd thing to say. Lol and for JK, "for his family?" Again, what does that even mean? Of course he left his home at a young age, he became a trainee at 13 years old and was there through his MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADUATION. That's young AF, but it wasn't FOR his family, it was to chase after his dreams of becoming a singer?? Again, what's with the weird implications here??

Boys planet has truly changed the way that I think about reality tv where the contestants are competing against each other for something, because one reactor simply said that this is just the precursor to the group which is already pretty much decided based on whoever gets screentime. And now I don't really care about the group as much as I care about the narrative. I hate mnets editing as much as the next guy, but the arcs, the parallels, and the tiny details that probably aren't even meant to be a part of the story are so good for no reason.

The feel special arc? Are you kidding me? I would defend Woonggi with my life after that. The tower of babel that was g group backdoor had people scrambling for weeks. Say my names instant karma for eliminating the members that fit the concept most.

An example of the great tiny details is Gunwook celebrating the hardest when Woonggi didn't get eliminated in the second round and how it makes sense because technically Gunwook is the reason Woonggi was in feel special in the first place. It's probably not true, but THAT is how you place a fun detail in a story. Or the way that Park Hanbin was set up from his audition to be the saving grace of his team and he has continued to do that EVERY SINGLE WEEK SINCE. Jongwoo's rise every episode until the most recent one has made sense because he turns the tide for his team every episode.

It's the way that if Matthew and Hanbin are on different teams in the finale, then it would parallel their dance off from like episode 2.

Build Up, eps 1-2: General Pre-4 Wrap

Favorite Sweater Award

Ok, first things first: my favorite sweater. Here are the top 4 candidates:

Geonu’s see-through layering affair

Hong Sungwon’s ombre blue frayed number

Bitsaeon’s shaggy, swaggy stripes

I thought long and hard about this, my beloved dongsaengs. I cast the runes, I did a draw on my tarot deck, I asked the crows, but in the end it was all my heart speaking to me and saying that the winner is…

Hong Sungwon! I just thought that I genuinely want to wear this sweater, like every day, so it wins.

My Performance Ranking

Next, I thought I’d list my personal opinion on the song performances, in rough order. Please note, my preferences are based at least partly on the song itself so this isn’t necessarily me saying I hate your favorite singer. I can’t help but prefer “If You” to most of the others because it’s easily my favorite song among the ten. The fact that “Don’t Go” is ranked so high is a testament to the singing that overcomes the song.

I’m also including the number of views on their “full version” youtube recording, out of interest. View counts marked with a star (*) were up for three weeks when I posted this, giving them a bit of a headstart on the others, which were only up for two weeks.

I think it’s pretty interesting that my top two faves also seem to be the internet’s top two faves!

Final Thoughts

Overall, these were 10 great performances, and I'm really enjoying this show. It's like, MNET lite -- much fewer reactions and instant replays, much less crying, much better singing. I wish there'd been a bit more variety in the song choices, but I guess if I were a fan of k-ballads, these songs would have felt quite distinct to me.

I hope that my nit-picking critique doesn't "yuck" anyone's "yum." Vocal quality is so idiosyncratic that it's hard to objectively say that one voice is "better" than another. That's like saying that home-made lasagna is better than Chicken McNuggets. Is it? I mean, it depends on what you like, right?

Also, even though I nitpick the voices, I do think that everyone on this show is here for a reason. This isn’t like Produce48 where a decent percentage of the girls literally could not sing. At all. Even a little. Couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. No, these guys can all sing and they all have something to recommend them, so if your favorite is my least favorite, I salute your good taste because I probably also like your favorite. I like all these guys.

So, I'm going to keep going with these recaps. I might be a bit behind throughout because work is picking up, and my health isn't great, so please be understanding of any typos or little mistakes you might see. I just may not have time to proof-read these as well as I'd like to.

Peak Time - (Episodes 1&2)

I like it, I like it a lot. That’s it, really. The whole idea behind it is amazing really and for one I’m really glad that this isn’t an Mnet show. I feel like Mnet, being Mnet, would try to create some sort of rivalry between the groups. I don’t think JTBC will do that, at least considering what I remember of Mix Nine but I can be wrong, it’s been so many years lol. Also the judges are good ones. I personally don’t like Jay Park but this show might change it, idk? Kyuhyun on the other hand… Really starting to dislike him.

I’ll mention only the performances I liked because there were too many to go through them all. There’s really no specific order to this, but I did like some of them more than others

Team 20:00 (M.O.N.T) – Fever

They made me forget that this is, originally, a JYP song. That’s show good they were. And they didn’t have a whole of dancing and there’s only 2 of them and they managed to make it feel it was their concert. I remember them from Mix Nine and this is a huge jump from that. I’m curious to see how they move forward and how will they be able to tackle other types of music. They seemed to be really in their element on this.

Team 11:00 (Vanner) – Adore U

First off, their story? Amazing, they deserve the world, they just really want to perform, doesn’t matter what they have to do on the side to be able to do so. And their performance? Sooooo good. It takes good vocalists to cover good vocalists and I believe they did a fantastic job. I’m already following them everywhere

Team 8:00 (DKB) – The Real

In this song, more than in others, there’s this energy that’s very specific to Ateez, it’s related to them as people and how they behave. To me, DKB managed to emulate that very well in this performance. They had fun throughout the entire thing and you could see it in their faces. It made me tear up a little bit when they were getting praised and the leader (?) was holding back his tears.

Team 23:00 (DGNA) – Mirotic

As expected, 2nd gen really hits different. Everything about this performance was magnificent, I can’t even really express how good it really was. The hold this song has on me it’s not even funny and the fact that these guys came out singing like that, no backtrack, vocals for days, so powerful all three of them and really dancing is insane. The other groups were so surprised to see them sing like that and I just was so happy, smiling and singing along the whole time.

Team 02:00 (NTX) – No Mercy

This was really good, to me the least expected song. I really liked it and there isn’t a whole lot to comment on it. I know that they’ve been getting some negative feedback from knets, because they dissed 4th gen during the rap verse but honestly? Who cares? Let’s start with the fact that they are, indeed, part of 4th gen and really a lot of the groups tend to focus on visuals and dancing more than anything else, sometimes it feels like watching a dance group that happens to have mics attached to their faces. So yeah, good job to them. (Also, imagine how crazy it is to perform to a song in a competition like this and then have the original singer come out as a contestant.)

Team 14:00 (GHOST9) – Never Ever

I like it, it wasn’t perfect at times, but overall very good. I’m surprised that they had to stay on hold for the judges to decide whether or not they would be able to move to the next round. To me they performed better than Bae143 and ATBO, who passed by the amount of votes imediatly (which don’t take me as reference because I usually hate when people cover exo or any song sang by exo members so). I was really surprised to seem them perform as just 5 and the fact that they had to rearrange the entire performance in day and still managed to do a decent job is really impressive. The guy rapping was screaming a little too much, I’m not sure if he was trying to emulate Jackson’s tone or if he had to take on a part that wasn’t originally his

Heedo – Soloist – Back Door

I’ve been a fan of his for some years now so I’m happy that he got to come out and participate. This performance was really good and really complete, he’s a good rapper and his singing voice is really good too.

Jong Up – Soloist – Anyone

I never expected to see him come to a show like this. My friend, who likes him a lot, said he was doing fine on his own so she doesn’t understand why he came out like this and why he said that B.A.P wanted to come as group. Regardless of that, his performance was really good and it really is different to see a man, man, dancing.

Byeong Ju – Soloist – 4 Walls

Let me tell that this a hard song and he was really good. I don’t have a whole lot to say so yeah, amazing, loved it.

I hated how JTBC didn’t announce during the show which groups would be through, out of those who were on hold, and the soloists who would make it into team 24:00. “Go to the site”? You couldn’t have spared 10 minutes to announce that while the show was airing? A terrible move if you ask me. Either way, out of the 15 groups in the show, I’ll be watching these 7 more as we move forward, but who knows, it might change.

Compared to Boys Planet, I like this one more, as the nature of the show is to push already formed groups closer to their dream. Regardless of who wins, I hope they find success.
