MHA headcanons bcuz the show brings me a lot of joy

⭐Iida is straight but is openly into BL. He's up to date on new releases, mostly pg shoujo stuff. Except for one fantasy comic that is hella explicit at some points but he is VERY passionate about the lore and characters.

⭐Bakugo has Inosuke levels of androgyny going on. He would give Shouto a run for his money in the "class 1-A's resident prettyboy" vote that was held if he 1. wasn't too scary for people to vote for him. and 2. if he stopped scowling for like two seconds.

⭐Aoyama is some flavor of nonbinary but doesn't use any labels because he HATES them. He is an ✨experience✨, a piece of art up for interpretation.

⭐Pro hero Red Riot has a line of menstrual hygiene products with cool and manly packaging because he's very popular with transmasc people and wanted to give back something helpful and validating to them.

⭐Kirishima once called Bakugo his "brofriend" and he just about had an aneurysm.

⭐ Before they got together, Kirishima wrote half the valentine's cards Bakugou recieved anonymously because he "just had so many feelings it couldn't fit just on one card!!"

⭐Bakugou is a secret romantic. He hates talking about it because it's "bad for his image" but he has a big collection of shoujo manga and internally melts whenever Kiri does something soft for him like buying flowers or holding his hand in public.

⭐Aizawa regularly gets intrusive thoughts of becoming a househusband whenever he has a particulaly annoying time. Like after his 7th parent teacher conference of the day or after a full week of falling asleep in uncomfortable beds in seedy hostels he stares at the ceiling like "Hizashi is a celebrity. He has three jobs. What am I doing here? I love him. I can't cook but I could learn 😫"

⭐Kaminari hits on Bakugo's mom every chance he gets. Bakugo's tries to blow him up, Mitsuki thinks it's fucking hilarious.

⭐Allmight has a crush on Midoriya Inko but is scared to do anything about it because A. it might upset Izuku and B. he thinks he's too old and ugly for her.

⭐You'd think Midnight would be a bad teacher based on her general sexy nature but actually she's well loved because she's the only teacher who the kids trust with advice on relationships and intimacy, especially after the dorm system set in. She has time set aside each week where she's available for anyone to pop into her office and chat about whatever they're worried about. Aizawa is endlessly thankful for this because one time Todoroki asked him what a backshot is because he heard Sero make a joke about it and he's still healing from that conversation.

⭐Since both of their quirks are food based Sato and Momo often bake together. Sato's the master decorator, Momo buys good quality ingredients and is a beast at chiffon cakes.

⭐Denki can't swim. After The Incident in primary school where he almost electrocuted a whole swimming pool of people he's been scared to try.

⭐Kirishima has two moms. His birth mom had him at like 18 and his biological father wasn't ready for that yet. Her best friend immediately stepped up to help with the baby, and that's Kiri's mama now.

Always hehe. Thank you for asking :) Here's a piece from my next BL One Shot:

“You know I’ll keep asking if you need to, right? I don’t mind. It’s not a- a hardship or a bother or whatever you’re thinking.” “I know. And I know you would. That’s why you don’t have to, I…” And Uea is a little mad at himself for leading to this confession in the bathroom at work, but he doesn’t want to push it back now that they have worked up the momentum, now that it’s at the tip of his tongue. “I trust you.” It is but a whisper breathed into King’s mouth, but it’s as loud as a chorus of drums in the silence between them, it the weight of it. Both the fact that it’s true, and that he was able to say it at all, are equally earth-shattering. King leans back a little just so that their eyes can meet, just so that he can look at Uea and know for sure. His face is split into a bright, awed smile, that he quickly presses against Uea’s own, kissing him soundly. Uea is eager to respond, happy for the distraction after this frayed exchange. They are interrupted, as they should, by their irate coworker complaining about having to do all the work while they sneak around. Uea hugs Jade to smother his protest and promises to do overtime with him to make up for it. King follows, of course. They still wait for each other after hours, as it makes for a good excuse to go back to either of their apartment together. Not that they need an excuse. It’s not like they have a quota or anything.

And something from the next chapter of Face the Change, supposedly. Fun fact I wrote this scene like three chapters ago and keep pushing it back cause it doesn't fit, but I do want to get it out there and it's been requested many times:

“My father.” “He’s alive?” “No.” Naruto laid a hand on his stomach as he often did, a gesture of comfort even though he couldn't feel it, and it couldn't be said to have brought him any comfort at all. The beast would nestle against his hand at times, would let himself be soothed, just for a moment. prophecies & animals

So inspired by the many animal-based prophecies Galehaut receives at the beginning of Lancelot Part III, I decided to break out the trusty ol’ 12th century Latin bestiary to remind myself of all the contemporary associations with the animals mentioned. I do not think it clarified things, but it definitely made them funnier, and what else can you ask for really.

Part I of the animal prophecy comes from the first of nine wise men to recount to Galehaut their visions about him, basically an animal-based metaphor for Lancelot and Galehaut’s first meeting:

I saw a large lion coming from the islands accompanied by a great many other animals, while from the lands to the east came another lion, wearing a crown, and he too was accompanied by all kinds of animals, but he did not have nearly so many as the one coming from the west. When the animals were gathered, the two sides clashed, and those from the east were losing when suddenly a large leopard, proud and haughty, came down from a mountain and rushed against the animals from the west; and he had no sooner appeared than he was able to stop them al by himself and hold them back. The lion that was their master came up to the leopard and acclaimed him as warmly as one animal can do another. Then he went straight off to the crowned lion and kissed his neck; and the crowned one stepped upon him and his animals did likewise to the others.

Part II of the prophecy happens at the end of all of the prophecy-telling, which talks about Galehaut and Lancelot’s love and how Guenevere is going to take Lancelot away:

“Yes,” he answered. “Merlin tells us that from the Islands of Jedares, from the home of the Fair Lady, a wondrous dragon will break forth and go flying left and right over all countries, and wherever he appears everyone will tremble before him. The dragon will fly on to the Adventurous Kingdom, and there he will have grown large and massive and have thirty heads of gold, each finer and more splendid than the original head. Merlin said that there he would be so large that the whole land would darken under the shadow of his body and his wings. He would reach the Adventurous Kingdom after having conquered almost everything, but the wondrous leopard would stop him and push him back and put him at the mercy of those he had just been so close to defeating. Afterwards, the two would love each other to the point of considering themselves a single thing, each unable to live without the other; but the golden-headed serpent would come draw the leopard away and take him away from his companion and besot his mind. Merlin says that this is how the great dragon will die. I know for a truth that you are the dragon, and the serpent who will take the knight away is my lady the queen, who loves or will love him as much as a lady can love a knight. But you know don’t you, that you love the knight with such a love that your heart cannot long endure that change.”

tl;dr Arthur is a crowned lion; Galehaut is a crowned lion and then a dragon; Lancelot is a leopard, and Guenevere is a serpent. Let’s learn about these beasties, shall we?

The lion is the prince of all animals.

His courage is seated in his heart, and his constancy is in his head

He likes to go up to high places to avoid hunters (like Jesus, concealing himself from the devil)

He sleeps with his eyes open (also like Jesus, buried alive yet awake)

The lioness births dead young, which the lion breaths on on the third day to wake them up (just like, you guessed it, Jesus)

Compassionate: spare the prostrate, prey on men instead of women, and do not kill children (take notes, people)

“Copulate in the backward way”,  like lynxes, camels, elephants, rhinoceroses, tigers, hyenas. Could not for the life of me tell you what this means.

“A lion, although he is the king of beasts, gets harassed by the tiny sting of a scorpion, and snake poison kills him”

Not much on the leopard, unfortunately, but he is “very swift and strongly inclined to bloodshed”, which tracks. It is also noted that they are born from the adultery of a lioness with a Pard.

The dragon is the “biggest of all serpents, in fact of all living things on earth”

Has a crest, and its strength is in its tail, not its teeth

The devil (the most enormous of all reptiles) takes the form of a dragon. Thus we learn that he has a crest or crown because he is the King of Pride, his strength is in its tail because he beguiles with deceit

Serpents are reptiles which crawl along on the belly and breast. “Of these creatures how many species, how many calamities, how many griefs, and what a lot of colors they have got!” Some highlights

The viper is named because it brings forth violence.

Viper reproduction: “Young snakes, not willing for the timely discharge of the birth, gnaw through the mother’s sides and burst out to her destruction ... The male puts its head in the female’s mouth and spits the semen into it. Then she, angered by his lust, bites off his head when he tries to take it out again ... Thus both parents perish, the male when he copulates, and the female when she gives birth“

The viper is villainous because it is “the cunningest of all species when it feels the lust for coition.” (Although not cunning enough to survive it, apparently)

The scitalis is “so splendid in the variegation of its skin that a man stops dead on seeing the beautiful markings.”

Syrens are “certain white snakes with wings … these can go faster than horses and are even said to fly as well”

Dandadan was fine, it was mostly a set-up chapter after all. I was looking forward to seeing the new guy’s design, but maybe that’ll be next week.

Magilumiere is making me insane. I’m coughing up blood. Shigemoto clinging to a single-minded ambition to deal with his grief, Midorikawa envying that Shigemoto at least has direction in his life, Midorikawa deciding to follow Shigemoto and do the dirty work for him to maintain his purity……………………………………………………………….. What in the hell is going on here…………….. Shigemoto’s conflicted expression as Midorikawa offers to dirty his own hands……………………..but agreeing anyway…………….. Also short hair Shigemoto in these hypercute outfits is really cute… I need to see BL doujins of these two so badly… (Also this makes me even sadder that the new anime character designs they revealed were so ugly… They don’t get Midorikawa’s secretly villainous energy…)

Cipher Academy is good, as always… The cover page was funny, I would’ve loved to see what bear crimes Eteshite has committed… I loved seeing Yukako again, but the revelation that she was tanking all the damage to gather intel for Toshusai was chilling… I really like how Iroha’s whole thing is how he can openly and honestly convey his true feelings to others… In a story all about codes and the obstruction of information, the core theme is still communication above all else. So Iroha being able to cut through the chaff of everyone’s codes and personalities and reach their hearts is fun, and a great design for the protagonist of a series like this. (And again, this means that Iroha has chemistry with everyone he interacts with… “You’re the Cipher Soldier I aspire to be??? LOOK UP TO YOU LIKE A STAR IN THE SKY?????????” It’s so refreshing to have a harem set-up where the main guy is actually likeable and charismatic LMAO) Iroha and Yukako’s little banter at the end was also super cute… And now it seems like we’re closing in on the climax of this arc, which is really exciting. I’m most looking forward to finding out what the furry class’ deal is.

Monday

We finally got back onto the House train for real now (especially since it’s leaving Amazon Prime in a few days). The episode where House picks Thirteen up from jail was really solid; I liked the fun little parallels they did with Thirteen picking House up from the security office later, their banter was fun, and Thirteen’s fears are genuine and I could really feel for her. House promising to kill her was probably the nicest thing he’s ever done. After that was Masters’ farewell episode, and while I don’t care about her enough to miss her, I do think seeing her interacting with Thirteen more would’ve been fun…but oh well.

I watched the latest episode of Make Some Noise, and even though I’m happy to see the Noise Boys back for another round, most of the prompts just really didn’t do it for me… Considering some of the heights that other Noise Boys episodes have taken me, this one was unfortunately a bit of a disappointment.

The new Kusuriya episode was also pretty good. I liked all the effort they put into making Fengming look menacing, from the lighting to the framing and the emphasis on the knife behind her. I also liked the brief glimpse into Ah-Duo’s loneliness – despite being a capable woman who would probably love to take matters into her own hands and be the master of her own fate, her position inspires others to sacrifice themselves so as to not dirty her hands…it’s a lonely existence, I imagine. Younger Lishu is so so so so cute, the Jinshi/Maomao moment was also soooooooooo cute. Solid episode overall.

Tuesday

Chainsaw Man…the tragedy of Denji is how he’s a straightforward guy in a complicated world. And perhaps his version of happiness is just fundamentally incompatible with his surroundings and his position as someone with a unique power… I’d like to see Denji get a happy ending, but it’s getting harder to imagine that happening.

We blasted through the end of House season 7 today, and it was decently fun. None of the medical cases in this batch were particularly memorable, though. The only stand-out moments were House doing surgery on himself and House crashing his car into Cuddy’s house. Farewell, Cuddy – you could’ve been a great character if you weren’t trapped in the comphet will they won’t they thing with House.

I started rewatching Downton Abbey in a hurry because I found out it’s about to leave Amazon Prime. I had first watched the show right after I graduated high school on my Grade 12 English teacher’s recommendation, and while I liked it a lot, I think some of it went over my head on account of me being dumb and not knowing much about the world. On this rewatch, I can see now that the show is quite funny under all the posh sounding language, and it’s self-aware about the ridiculousness of this extravagant lifestyle while also allowing us to fully marinate in its splendour and, dare I say, its comfyness. Yes, eat the rich and all that, but there’s something comforting about the routines and efficiency of this estate and how the family and the servants interact and have fondness for each other. Lord Grantham in particular is winning the most based award by a long shot with his open-mindedness. All of the characters in Downton are so distinct and yet believable and likeable – even detestable people like Thomas and Mary get softened over time as we learn more about their struggles (that’s just going off my vague memories from my first watch, though). The only person I truly dislike is O’Brien. I love watching Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes trying to manage everyone like parents – it’s even more satisfying now that I know where they end up at the end of the show. Also it’s funny how they wrote Daisy to the be the audience surrogate character who asks basic questions so that the audience can figure out what’s going on and what the standards for the time period are. (Speaking of which, I like that it’s set in the 20th century – the rapidly changing landscape makes for an interesting backdrop to the soap opera-like personal conflicts of the estate). I never did get around to watching the Christmas special or the movies, so I’m looking forward to those after I finish my rewatch and refresh my memory on everything.

Seeing House return to PPTH was nice, as was him trying to reconcile with Wilson in his own way. Park is a fun addition to the cast (we knew her as Ruby’s voice actor on Steven Universe), but unfortunately her acting is so incredibly stiff…

More Downton. I’m enjoying it, but there are some moments where the editing gets a little crazy… Especially when they try to do quick cuts, it just looks jarring and almost like a mistake. I also find some of the romantic progression to be a bit abrupt… I get that they only have eight-ish episodes a season so they have to move things along, but it’s a bit weird when two characters make knowing glances and have like three meaningful scenes together and then all of a sudden they’re saying I love you or getting jealous when the other person talks to someone else like let’s be real here.

Thursday

Downton Abbey: We all saw it coming, and I do like it, but there’s some part of me that’s a little disappointed with the Mary/Matthew romance. As pointed out in the show itself, it tidily solves all of their issues (until the sudden Cora pregnancy…kind of), and the legal drama enjoyer in me would’ve liked to see them somehow foil the entail in some other way. I also wish it was more of a slow burn, but I guess there are other couples who fulfil that role.

House, but I have nothing notable to say about it.

Even more House. Why did we get like four white dudes in a row for patients. The boxing match subplot was cute.

Undead Unluck is crazy good this week… I LOVEEEEEEEEE hearing the English and the Japanese Simlish happening, it’s a little mind-bendy but it serves UU’s international aspect really well. The standoff between Andy and Rip was a little whatever, but I liked that Rip and Latla got some comedic moments to themselves. They serve as a great foil to Andy and Fuuko, and it hints at their importance by humanizing them. And seeing good guy Rip in the current manga loop is really funny when compared to Hot Topic sexy bad boy Rip mmm I’m gonna lick my own blood every five seconds because I’m cool and edgy. AND THEN!! CHIKARA STOPPING THE BULLET WAS SOOOO HYPE!!!!!!!!!! WE ARE SO BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some of Downton Abbey’s soap opera quirks are annoying me a little bit. O’Brien causing Cora’s miscarriage on the basis of a perfect misunderstanding, the waffling between Matthew and Mary, etc. And I’ve gotta say, Mary has been extremely unlikeable throughout this whole season…her quips feel more nasty than clever. Her sabotaging Edith’s prospects out of spite/for her own amusement didn’t sit well with me at all, and her next scene being her tearfully begging Matthew to stay was like…I feel like they wanted me to feel bad for her, but I really don’t.

Emperor Nero elevated the sadism wrought upon Christians to an art form in the wake of the Crucifixion. As the feedstock for the Colosseum’s diversions we partook in the spectacles of damnatio ad bestias in the guise of delicacies for starved beasts until the release of death before revellers baying for blood. Another crowd pleaser were the nocturnal displays of human torches lighting garden parties for the glitterati’s amusement. Chroniclers like Eusebius, Tacitus, Suetonius, Pliny, Lactantius and Cicero all bore testimony to the brutality visited upon the early Church which repudiated the deification of Rome’s Emperor into the pantheon of gods. This affront to idolatry aroused the oppression against all seedlings of our faith. Any dissent proved anathema to the Empire’s highly stratified society. A family that pulled the lame, slave, woman and other social pariah into its bosom where masters and their subordinates were equal would be decreed persona non grata. Such treason at loggerheads with the anthropocentric belief of man being the centre of the universe had to be blotted out. The humility of serving others rather than being served belied the fetish for material things that was the body politic’s hallmark. This weltanschauung risked obsolescence from a believer who was anaesthetized to comfort and pain.

The doctrine of almsgiving in redistributing wealth unto the poor ran afoul of class divisions long curated by Rome’s elite between the likes of patricians and plebeians. A status quo of great opulence for the privileged few put the act of charity in its crosshairs lest this counterculture subvert the establishment. Fear of state reprisal however did not find any quarter in the hearts of Christians who were bent on showing how the emperor had no clothes. Altruism from missionaries threw open this black box of Rome’s dereliction towards its own people when it was these alleged bohemians who remedied the scourge of deprivation not the state. Our family’s resistance reminded the disaffected about the follies of tyrants. The more we cast aspersions on slavery, gladiator games and other hedonism did the cracks in the regime propagate. The spectre of unrest from citizens who tired from hitching their fate to a superficial culture of bread and circuses run by despots came to be the impetus for why rulers took umbrage at our precepts. The boogeyman of revolution caused the worry. What further piqued the Pretorian Guard amidst this war of ideas were Christians who courted martyrdom with fervency. Our cavalier attitude towards authority and death alike bewildered thought leaders. Christian armour betrayed no hint of vulnerability.

Emperor Nero’s pogrom of Christians in 64 AD would be the first of many in our pedigree. Vilification of our family whenever woes beleaguered the ruling class found utility in self-preservation so the masses could be hoodwinked into forgetting the rot of men and institutions. Demagoguery thus masked discontent. Nero exploited this subterfuge to distract from his depleted treasury most notoriously in the throes of the Great Fire. Two canards therein would impugn the monarch who flouted the stoicism of Rome with abandon. The potentate was first accused of masterminding the inferno to raze the real estate for his vanity project dubbed the Domus Aurea complex. A second caricatured the autocrat as serenading the blaze with his lyre as the city succumbed to the fire. In his Machiavellian ways Nero seized the animosity towards Christians to be the pawns for his misdirection in a desperate bid absolving himself of blame. Since we were already otherized with slanders of cannibalism in virtue of the public’s flawed understanding of the Eucharist this propaganda found an ally in our genocide. So began the systematic culling of Christians for millennia to follow. That foul usurper’s legacy set a precedent haunting us to this day. But know this brethren: Greater love has no one than this; to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

This persecution continued in fitful bouts across antiquity under Caesars Domitian, Marcus Aurelius, Decius and Diocletian who were harbingers for the wrath upon our kith and kin. As Christians balked at paganism the authorities spun the narrative that we were paradoxically atheists for our want of acquiescence to the veneration of their gods. Under Domitian his fiscus Judaicus tax penalizing Jews was expanded to make Christians liable in forfeiting income for our obstinacy against sacrifices to Rome’s many deities. Such conscientious objection deepened a rift between us and pagans. The yoke of taxation in Domitian’s crackdown became one of several manifestations of his animus towards the faithful. For the persecutors our defiance was read as jeopardizing the superstition of Pax Deorum wherein Rome’s prosperity hinged on a détente between gods and mortals. Outright refusal to propitiate this polytheism by a religion birthed in the backwaters of the Empire in the little known place of Jerusalem shook the mores of a society built upon the aesthetics of Venus or the militancy of Mars. Christians then would be mercilessly hunted. Under Marcus Aurelius yet again did we find a noose around our neck as incursions by Germanic tribes and the Antoine Plague beset his throne. History repeated itself.

By the time Decius ascended to the seat of power our faith was no longer whispered about in hushed tones. Our numbers although still a minority removed us from the forgotten fringes. But riven with discord internally it behooved Decius to consolidate his rule whose method of choice was the homogenization of values. The Emperor summarily authored an edict making compulsory the public rite of offerings to Roman gods in return for a libellus or certificate of proof officiated by a magistrate. Either the fearful apostatized or the strong were ostracized by way of imprisonment or death. Lost on this impostor of a man however was how martyrdom was perennially the seedbed for our faith harkening back to the seminal act of Jesus mounting the cross. Akin to Saul’s metanoia into Paul from an epiphany upon the road to Damascus despite his imprimatur in the stoning of protomartyr St Stephen a Christian’s death is but fertilizer. We look blithely upon mortality for it has no purchase on our soul. We court suffering for our psychic inheritance of the trauma borne by Christ reminds us of our raison d’être. We drink from His cup in bearing our own cross for this legacy. So whilst Decius weaponized the bureaucracy to systemically cull our siblings these persecutions intensified the proliferation of our ethical code in homage to Him.

In Rome’s final effort to exterminate our family four edicts were pronounced over a decade in the midst of the Great Persecution where each escalated in draconian effect. From the despoliation of churches to executions en masse it was Diocletian who looked askance at Christians once more as a fifth column of the Empire. The first decree of AD 303 bypassing the purview of the Senate sanctioned that all places of worship be destroyed and scriptures be consigned to the flames. The second bore its fangs squarely upon the clergy to coerce a recantation of their faith lest they be imprisoned. The third broadened the persecution in a dragnet from the shepherds to the sheep whereby the laity were forced to partake in Rome’s rituals or else relinquish legal rights and submit to be trafficked as slaves. The fourth demanded a blanket conformity to the orthodoxies of the pantheon under penalty of torture or death regardless of age or gender. Genocide and infanticide were the functions of the mobilization in this machinery for the sinister purpose of carnage. No child or babe was spared. With cold precision the bureaucracy loosened the banality of evil upon us when administrators sought to outdo the other in their zeal for graves. This chapter of our persecution was closed with the Edict of Milan in AD 313. Others would follow.

Chapter Forty-Two

By the time the team is sure Jack is okay, and they all leave the Hub, it's too late in the day for Sophie to go home.

Jack had offered to let her sleep in his bed, but she opted for the bunks, wanting some time to herself.

The next morning, Sophie wakes up to a loud ringing from her mobile. Groggily, she grabs the device. "Hello?" she answers, swiping any remains of sleep from her eyes.

The thick Scottish brogue of the Time Lord filters through the line, "Care to explain what's happening right now?"

"What?" she asks. She flips her feet over the side of the bed, and places them onto the cold floor, "I don't even know what you're talking about."

"Turn on the news."

She grumbles something under her breath, and climbs to her feet. She pads out of the bunk room, and into the main section of the Hub. She boots up a computer, and turns on the news. There are reports of alien attacks on almost every major city. She sighs deeply, and presses the phone back to her ear, "To be honest, Doc, I've got absolutely no clue."

"I did a scan, and everything is leading back to Cardiff, most specifically the rift. What's going on there?"

"Okay, first of all, how the actual f*ck do you know I'm at the Hub, secondly, I have no bl**dy clue, and third, if you're so concerned, why don't you go and investigate it yourself?"

He sighs deeply, "I can't go and check it out. I made a promise that I would stay here and watch the vault for a thousand years. That means I can't go out and investigate these invasions."

She flips to a different station, which once again just speaks of 'the end of days'. "Look, I don't know what all this is about, but I do know that Torchwood will investigate. I'll try to keep you updated on everything."

"Alright, Lynny, but be careful, please."

She smiles, and hits the end call button. She flicks off the computer, and scales the staircase to Jack's office. Without knocking, she pushes the door open, and finds the Captain doing paperwork. "Hey, Jack," she greets.

His head snaps up, and he sets his pen aside, "Hey, kiddo. You're up early."

"Yeah, turn on the news."

He raises an eyebrow, but obediently turns his computer to the news website, and sees all about the invasions. Sighing deeply, Jack grabs his phone and calls up the team.

The team arrives shortly thereafter, and they all gather into the main area of the Hub, everyone except Jack. Ianto, almost as soon as he arrives, pulls out his Bible, "'And I heard but did not understand, and I said, Master, what is the End of all these things? And he said, go, Daniel, for the things are closed up and sealed until the end of time.' Daniel twelve, verse ten."

Gwen snorts, "Sounds a bit close for comfort."

Owen is crouching by the creepy hand that's inside the jar, the one machine Sophie has avoided in all of her trips to Torchwood. "This machine's on the blink. Keeps losing power." He stands up and walks to the computers, "Sorry, don't let me stop your portents of doom. Or have you finished?"

"No, plenty more where that came from," the Welshman states. "Abaddon, the Great Devourer, who'll lead the world into shadow."

At that moment, Jack enters the room, and rolls his eyes, "Yeah, thanks, Ianto. I can do without the superstition. You people love any story that denies the randomness of existence."

"Wow," Sophie says, hopping off the desk she was sitting on, "I'm making a great effort not to be insulted. Anyway, you should know better than most, that most legends and stories have a basis somewhere. I mean, the Doctor has met Satan, or 'the Beast of the pit', and UNIT has files about a dæmon named Azal that attacked in the early seventies."

Ianto turns, and gives her a thankful nod, "Okay, I've been fielding calls all morning. The government, UNIT, the CIA. Half the Western world and a good proportion of the Eastern are all asking the same question. Is this anything to do with us?"

"And is it?" Gwen asks.

Sophie steps forward, "I have it on good authority that every single attack, invasion, and time distortion can be traced back to Cardiff, specifically the rift?"

"And whose authority is this?" Owen asks, crossing his arms.

"I've run a profile on every reported temporal anomaly and tracked any physical or temporal pattern," Tosh says, drawing the Hubs attention. They watch her screen, as red lines lead from all of the different anomalies, and they all lead right back to the Hub.

"Like I said," Sophie states, leaning against Jack's shoulder.

"The cracks in time trace back here to the Rift. This city, this Hub, is the centre. What you're seeing around the world are ripples and aftershocks," Jack states. He turns, and glares at Owen, "The Rift is splintering because of you."

"What?" Owen asks, incredulously.

"You opened the Rift without knowing what you were doing. You've caused the temporal cracks to widen. Time is seeping through."

"If it wasn't for me, you three'd still be in the 1940s," he nods at Jack, Tosh, and Sophie, "So are we going to sit around crying into our lattes, or are we gonna do something about it?"

Jack turns away from the doctor, "Bring those who've fallen through time back here, into the vaults."

"And do what with them?" Owen snarks, crossing his arms.

Jack glances over at Sophie, and makes an annoyed face. She giggles, as he turns back to face the doctor, "We'll deal with phase one first, then I'll tell you about phase two."

"You can't control time," Owen grumbles, "You can't send them back. What are you gonna do?"

Sophie takes a deep breath, "I'm sure we'll think of something. This isn't the end of the world, trust me. That doesn't happen till the year five point five slash apple slash twenty-six. There's still plenty of time till then, about five billion years to be precise."

The Torchwood team blink at her, confused. She shrugs, and turns to one of the screens as it starts to beep. "Priority one attendance at the hospital," Ianto reads, "Mortality rates gone through the roof. They're sealing off the area and designating a hot zone."

Owen sighs, "I'll go."

Jack nods, "Tosh, go with him."

Owen rolls his eyes, "No thanks, I'm fine on my own."

"And you'll be even better with me alongside," the tech states, pulling her coat on, "Shut up and come on."

As soon as the doctor and tech are gone, Gwen turns on Jack, "Did you have to pick on him in public like that?"

Jack raises an eyebrow, and leans against one of the desks, "All of our actions have consequences."

"And all your staff have feelings, Jack. Even Owen."

Jack snorts, and turns away from her, "Well, you would know."

"He brought you back. Would you rather be stuck in World War II?"

Sophie shrugs, as she walks up beside the Captain, "Yeah, probably."

Gwen grumbles, but doesn't say any more, her mobile ringing.

Luka sighed as he looked in the mirror as he thought about his plan. It might not have been the best thing to do but he didn't know what else he was suppose to do. The last week had been awful and now he was faced with a choice that he thought he would never have to make. Either been unhappy or become a no mark. He traced his finger over the small bumble bee that rested on the inside of his wrist. It was his 'soul mate' mark. He didn't know why they existed, only that everyone had them. Some people loved the idea of been made for someone who was considered their other half. Of always been in love and together no matter what. His sister and her girlfriend Rose were those type of people but they had good soul mates. Rose was the sweetest girl he had met and Juleka was kind and gentle. Sure, she was shy but she was good. Their songs were as sweet as a bird's morning song and they balanced each other out. Rose brought Juleka out of her shell and Juleka calmed Rose down. They loved the whole soulmate thing. However, he was not that type of person. He didn't think it was romantic. He thought it was controlling and creepy. He didn't like the idea that he would be forced to be with one person for the rest of his life. It wasn’t that he was against marriage or been faithful to one person. He just hated the idea of that he couldn’t pick who that person was. It went against everything he was and all he believed in. He was what one might call a free spirit and believed in complete free will. As far as he was concerned, Fate could take it's plans and shove them where the sun didn't shine. He was the master of his life, destiny and will and no one in the universe could control him. However, he had hoped that his soul mate would be someone who was creative and kind. If he didn't get a choice in who they were then he hoped was like him. Unfortunately, his soul mate was Chloe Bourgeois. The very girl who bullied his sister, Rose and their friends. He felt sick the moment he realized. He had rushed to the bathroom and threw up after meeting her. Her song was awful and she was nothing more than a brat. However, she had been pretty pleased about him been her soul mate. She stated that he was attractive but commented that he would need to stop 'dressing like trash'. He didn't like how she saw his clothes as trash but due to the magic that binded their souls together, he had to agree with her. It felt forced and wrong when he nodded. After spending a day with her, he felt drained and there was no way he could do this for the rest of his life. Whomever had decided that she was his perfect match must have been high that day because they were completely wrong for each other. He always been taught that soul mates were meant to complete each other but he felt like she was a triangle and he was a circle. They didn't match and there would never been a true connection between them. Their songs would not sing in harmony and Luka would feel trapped like some beast in a cage. He would only ever be a piece of eye candy on her arm for all to see but he would never truly be loved by her nor would he ever truly love her. He couldn't do it. He was a free and creative soul and Chloe wasn’t. She was everything he hated. That had what lead him to where he was. He looked at his reflection again as he thought his choice over one last time. He was deciding if he wanted to become a no mark or a mark destroyer as they were sometimes known. A No Mark was a person who had destroyed their soul mark, breaking the magic and connection to their soulmate. His mother had done it with his father but she was the only one he knew of. The problem was that the only way to destroy a soul mark was to physically remove it and then there were the rumors. Some say that once you removed your soul mark, you lost the ability to ever love again. His mother had cut it out of her arm and had never bothered been with someone after that. Luka wasn't sure if it was because she couldn't love or because of choice but she was happy and free. He looked at his mark again before looking up at his reflection. He narrowed his eyes and picked up the lighter he planned to use to get rid of it.

 "I am the master of my own life and destiny," He stated, holding his arm out and lighting it. He held it to his arm, causing it to burn. He cried out as the fire burnt his skin but he kept going. His eyes widened as he felt the connection shatter as his skin burnt. Soon, the bee was gone and all was left was a burn and blood where it had been. Luka shakily dropped the lighter and ran the cold tap before carefully placing his injured wrist under it, cleaning. He hissed as it hurt before he took out an antiseptic liquid and cotton wool pads. He used it to clear the wound before wrapping it up in a bandage. Once that was done, he ran water again and splashed his face before looking up at his reflection. He was afraid that it would feel bad and he knew he would be considered a freak but he honestly felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders and that he was truly free. With a certain and determined look, he glanced back at his reflection and repeated the words that had become his mantra. "I am the master of my own life and destiny,"

 ~A Few Years Later~

 "I am not in love with you anymore," Marinette gasped as she pulled away from Adrien. He had been her soul mate but she realized it had been come a burden that was slowly ebbing away at her and breaking her down.Firstly there were the people who wanted to have him as their soul mate. Some hadn’t been too bad but one girl had made it her life’s mission to harm Marinette because of it. Then there was the issue with Adrien himself. He was what you might call sunshine personified but not in the way she thought he was. He was burning her and destroying her. She thought he had been a dream come true but now he was a wish she wished she had never made. It was one of the reasons why she had decided to become a no mark. Another reason was because of how controlling his father had been. He understood that she was Adrien's soul mate but she had to meet his expectations. He had tried to mould her into someone she was not. She had learnt very quickly that the Agreste men had decided she should basically be a doll. She would need to look her best all the time, she would never speak out of term and she would never work. She was expected to provide an heir and act as the perfect wife but that wasn't who Marinette was. She was chaotic and smart. She loved getting involved and wanted to be a designer. She hoped to run her own fashion house one day under the name MCD but Mr Agreste had told her she would be a designer under his label and not her own. It was part of what would be expected about her if she married into that family. All of that plus the girl out to destroy had been enough to push her into thinking about becoming a No Mark but the final straw had been when he had insulted her family. Adrien hadn’t even tried to defend them and she was expected to accept what Mr Agreste had said. Well, no sir, she would not. That night she left with the intention of becoming a no mark and she did. It had hurt but she sliced across the paw print that was her soul mark to Adrien and severed their connection. Within minutes of tending to the wound, she had phoned him and broke up with him. Boy did it felt amazing. She felt truly free to become whoever she wanted. She had even met a lovely musician who she had started a budding romance with. However, even months later, Adrien still hadn't gotten the message. He stood there, looking at her as she tried to get into the cafe where she was suppose to be meeting her date. "Adrien, move,"

 "No, I'm not moving!" He gasped as she stepped around him and inside. However, he followed her. "Marinette, please! Hear me out!"

 "I'm not interested," She declared in an emotionless manner before seeing Luka by the counter. He was speaking to the barrister and dressed in a blue shirt and black pants. Her heart fluttered as she looked at him. He might not be her soul mate but she was definitely finding herself falling for him. The best part is she knew this was real. He was a no mark like her. Adrien, however, blocked her sight as he stepped into her vision, making her groan in annoyance. "Adrien, seriously. Go away,"

 "I can't, mi'lady!" He gasped, actually getting down on his knee. She felt sick from the nickname he gave her. "We're meant to be! We're soul mates!"

 "Not anymore!"

 "Mari, you can't be serious!" He gasped as she walked away from him. He looked shocked as she did. He jumped up and grabbed her arm, making her roll her eyes. "But we're written in the stars!"

 "Yeah, well, the stars are stupid!" She declared, shocking him again. This was not his Marinette. She torn her arm from him and rolled up her sleeve, revealing her damaged mark. He winced as he saw it. He had felt it when she had done it. "Did you forget that I became a no mark?!"

 "Our love is stronger then a mark,"

 "No, Adrien, our love doesn't exist and it never did! It wasn't even real!" She gasped, making him look back at her with hurt. If she still had her soul mark, she would have felt guilty and been compelled to say sorry and make it up to him but since she was a no mark, she wasn't bound to the same rules anymore. She was free. "You wanted a wife who wouldn't question you or your father. Well, news break, Adrien! I'm not that girl! Now get out of my face! I'm already late as it is!"

 "Mari-" He started but a hand landed on his shoulder, making him look behind him as he came face to face with a young man with blue and black hair. He had a harsh look in his eyes as he started at Adrien before he looked over at Marinette. A soft expression took over his eyes. It made Adrien feel sick as he looked at her.

 "Is this man bothering you, Miss?" He asked, making him blink.

 "I'm not bothering her!" He gasped, yanking his arm from him. He frowned as he saw the scar on his inner wrist. Great, another no mark. "I'm her soulmate,"

 "Hmm... soul mates are overrated," He stated as the harsh look returned in his eyes. "Now kindly leave my cafe and this young lady alone before I make you. She is obviously not interested in you,"

 Adrien blanched in shock before looking back at Marinette. She turned her nose up before he let his shoulder sink and walked away, leaving the cafe. As soon as he left, the tension lifted and Marinette broke into a smile before gently kissing the young man's cheek. He smiled back at her as she blushed.

 "I'm sorry that I'm late, Luka," She smiled shyly, pushing her hair behind her ear. His expression turned to one of ease and happiness as he held out his arm to her.

 "Don't worry about it, Mari," He smiled, making her giggle as she took his arm. "I made your favorite today,"

 "You're the best," She grinned, walking over to a table with him. They sat down as Marinette played with her hands. Luka reached out and gently took hers in his. She glanced at the scar on the inside of his wrist before looking at the cuts over hers. "That... that was my soul mate... Adrien..."

 "He seemed delightful," Luka grinned sarcastically, making her giggle. "Mine use to be Chloe Bourgeois,"

 "Oh no wonder you decided to be a no mark," She gasped before covering her mouth. "I mean-"

 "Oh, it was exactly like that," He grinned, making her feel better. "Maybe it's because I am no mark but I don't get it. It seems so wrong and forced to have a soul mate already prepared for you,"

 "Right?" Marinette gasped before looking at Luka. "But I like spending time with you, Luka. It feels real and genuine,"

 "That's because it is, my melody," He smiled, making her blush at the nickname. She knew they weren't soul mates but she also knew she was falling in love with him and judging by the gentle look in his eyes, he felt the same.

there's a limit on how much you can be an isekai intellectual...

a bunch of analyses have been popping up before me all day so i wanted to throw my hat into the ring. all love to ppl who are exercising their creative minds + ppl like geoff here who just talk about these things because of fan interest but i feel like there reaches a point where exploring the "types" of isekai is pointless? i've seen ppl list out the different types of villainess revenge isekai or fantasy mmorpg isekai but eh why fit them all into separate boxes like that?

i think it's easier to think of isekai as a "type" (genre) of itself with only two categories: 1) a focus on isekai (lit. another world) 2) tensei (lit. to be reborn). this allows for a variety of applications and thus tropes that ppl see so many trends of!

with isekai - in another world

you see everything from:

pure fantasy (inuyasha, digimon wait maybe not the best example but in my childhood mind i count digimon as pure fantasy, fushigi yugi)

mmorpg inspired fantasy/adventure (.hack//legend of twilight, sao ugh, log horizon, overlord (LOVE OVERLORD!)

otome game-esque worlds >>> this is where it gets complicated with "villainess routes" since i admit there are multiple villainess tropes but this is why it's nice to not think of this as a "sub-type/genre" bc it frees you from those complications! (the saint's magic power is omnipotent, the white cat's revenge as plotted from the dragon king's lap soso cute!, the savior's book cafe in another world, i'm a villainous daughter so i'm going to keep the last boss wait i can't remember if she's reborn in this one lmaooo see this is why rules make everything hard)

with tensei storylines - being reincarnated/reborn in another world as *insert character/role*

pure fantasy (a returner's magic should be special, reminiscence adonis, the lady and the beast, light and shadow, i can't think of a manga off the top of my head for this ah)

mmorpg inspired fantasy/adventure (so i'm a spider so what i stan kumoko so hard, her majesty's swarm, can't name another off the top of my head ah i hate lists shorter than two things...)

self-insert based games/novels (fiance's observation log of a self-proclaimed villainess, who made me a princess, death is the only ending for the villainess, the villainess wants to marry a commoner, honestly games vs novels are different applications but i'm not in the headspace to try to remember a bunch of both lol)

*insert line break to give random ppl a break from scrolling but tl; dr just enjoy things for what they are no need to micro analyze*

similar variations occur in both genres (if ppl want to be super technical i guess i'm arguing that isekai itself is a massive genre that has the "another world" subgenre and "reincarnation" subgenre tl; dr) so i think it's honestly a huge pain to try to separate all these trends into so many different types of stories. for me personally it's easier to not get overwhelmed by this gigantic umbrella of "isekai" that spans light novels, manhwa, manga, and mobile games by just stripping each story down into its trademark tropes (aka character archetypes, story structures) and slapping "oh this is a person going to a world that's not ours" and "this person gets reborn as blank in another world". none of this "omg this power fantasy is such a this kind of isekai moment" or "there are 14 different types of villainess revenge stories and this series fits into this" bc AH labels! limitations! circle-jerks via ppl trying to compartmentalize everything and sound smart for leaving a comment on story analysis instead of ooh-ahhing over a character's face! dividing things into light novel manga vs manga vs korean manhwa ft. female characters!

the last bit is mainly why i feel frustrated by ppl's insistence to group everything?

the video linked at the beginning of the post (honestly good video essay, i enjoyed it, i just kept thinking in my head the whole time "marimo these are tropes do not take the genre talk literally") has a baby comment thread talking about "korean isekai manhwas" as a genre featuring nothing but reincarnated villainess' and i can't.

like i cannot acknowledge that as a genre of any sort. the energy i felt reading through some of those insights takes me back to 2012 when all yt americans discovered k-pop and deemed all korean music k-pop from then on! (ppl still do this now, yes you are seen and don't talk to me pls i don't like you. k-pop is korean pop music and nothing less and nothing more. take a few seconds and try to parse apart aspects of korean culture instead of slamming everything into a monolithic label that has the letter k and a hyphen.) it feels so odd to see a bunch of young ppl on ig and tiktok acknowledge korean media that happens to be in the form of a webtoon as "oh stories all about young girls becoming villains in stories they made/played" bc it feels so reductive u.u

(positionality disclaimer that i'm praying isn't actually necessary: i am a 3rd-generation korean of japanese descent do not fite me i am exhausted irl of ppl asking for validation/verification bc massive shove off.)

breaking news! korean manhwa...is just as multifaceted as japanese manga...bc how can comics as an art-form not have multiple genres...huh such a shocker?!?! same likely applies to media in other parts of the world like chinese manhwa and french comics--not my place to explain either of those i just know those industries exist bc of wakfu and donghua shows by Tencent.

at the end of the day it's not like analyzing any kind of isekai is wrong--absolutely not!! i think it can be super fun to think about how isekai elements complicate a story (MCs trying to go back home, ppl from the og world, reincarnation plot-twists) or maybe even bash a series for including some kind of other world element when they could have just written a super fun fantasy.

insert marimo's brief ramble that hey you can get sick of truck-kun's hitting disillusioned guys who happen to be super duper smart or girls who happen to be master chefs/craftsmen but transporting a fully-grown being into a fantasy setting is the ultimate cheat code for making mundane modern technology seem cool and overpowered, and being reincarnated as a fully grown person in a world with a pre-made story/game set-up completely bypasses the need for an author to slowly flesh out world-building in a natural progression so isekai is actually a really smart writing tool it's just that there are some series where the author didn't use it well at all and it's cheesy or clearly isekai was misused as a vehicle for character/story development and it was pointless *DEEP BREATH OUT*

in this essay i will argue...lol i am such a culture studies major!! if i were an english major i would be talking all about writing but here i am having a side-tangent about world-building via someone being reborn wow i love this for me (don't get me started on when an author has someone reincarnate as a baby and the story is mostly them having warm fluffy moments with their family--typically father figures--and getting lots of powers i could and would and probably will rant about east asian toxicity)

but anyway am i crazy????? like yes for being passionate about the technical use of a word like genre (i am a scorpio rising let me be fussy pls) but i don't think it's a lot to ask for ppl to not unironically see "villainess revenge isekai" as the definition of korean manhwa.

idk as someone who resonates with why japanese isekai is so popular domestically + why a lot of korean manhwa feat. the same tropes (it's not for great reasons lads it's actually depressing tbh) i'm just starting to feel kind of pained by the generalization and need to separate "cute japanese girl in an otome game"/"japanese boy finds a harem in another world" from "korean girl dies and comes back as a villainess" bc they are just! applications to the same story device!!
