ok so i saw 1 (one) shitpost and now thia idea will not leave my head so ima gonna scream abt it: freddyfive night punch out

(to be clear im basing most my fnaf game knowledge on ucn and my punchout knowledge on wii, cause like those are the only ones ive played)

so like in total the fight would involve freddy, foxy, marionnete, all the balloon children (including the lil uh oh how un fortunate bitch >:3 ),

the fight itself you would be boxing good ol normal freddy however he would have a bunch of paraphernalia on him, specifically: a thingy on the left side of his hat with a music box, his hat which if punched enough can come off and reveal some small child, and a vent on his right "abdomen" from which many things can pop out of.

fnaf in general is like about "resource" management in the sense that the resources are how pissed the various robots are so that would be translated over to this by way of punching different spots depending on whats necessary at the time.

now in punchout, hitting the head during stun is generally simply better as it does more damage. however, there exists the hat of many small fellows, and like every 5 head taps theres a "chance" (probably a preset order) of either bb, jj, or the uh oh how unfortunate one. bb does a real quick slap that cuts your stamina (the heart meter) in half. like does Current-(Total*.5), so like if the total was 8 it takes 4 no matter how much u have. this in fact could just fuck you over at a bad time, as bb is want to do. jj apparently does precisely nothing in fnaf 2 after some quick research, so she also does nothing but pop out and idk be silly. and little miss unfortunate circumstances could maybe sing her lil song and like randomly lower one of the other "timers" a chunk.

ok so punchout is one of those probably few wii games that avoided mandatory pointer/motion stuff but i cannot think of a better way to implement this one idea so: there would be a decent bit of downtime between attacks where you're not able to hit fred but he aint attacking you and this would be when you're supposed to flick the wiimote into pointing at the background, specifically a wheres waldo ass thing about "staring" at foxy for a brief moment to keep them at bay (relatively simple as its a large fox robot in a sea of faceless grey silhouettes), and if you dont for long enough they do the funny skedaddle into a big ol uppercut or whatever, which would just instatly ko you. altho it would have a big ol tell of fred stepping aside for a second and the loud stomping naturally, so you could just skip this and play as normal, simply dodging or perhaps punching back, which would do damage to fred cause you earned that if so. (im thinking you'd just be knocking foxy back into him)

the music box side is relatively simple, over the course of the match it visibly unwinds and you have to hit it to keep it wound up or suddenly marionette headbutt. probably 3 punches would keep it fully wound. the box's music would be like wound into the fight song but then slowly quiet down as its winding off, and eventually the lil jack in the box "last seconds!!!" thing would play too, and that would "force" him to do some attack if hes in neutral. you better get that stun real quick tho lmao.

power: thats a very core emchanic in fnaf, and i have 2 ideas for how it could be mixed in here, a: it be tied to that heart energy number of mac's that makes you tired when it hits zero and cant punch no more, however this feels kinda bs and like just not balanced, like punch out is not the type of game to have a kick u while ur down mechanic u feel me b, a much better idea in my book: the stage/ring has power. for this to make sense it would be taking place in more of like a garage or smth, crowd could still be there but like its less of an official thing. this would actually incentivise ending the fight quickly more than just for cool points. it would nt like charge back between rounds, and for actual numbers, lets say like 5 minutes 30 "seconds "of total power. thats a bit over half of the total possible roundtime and feels decently accurate to the like "win before this or you Perish" angle. running out of power would, first of all, turn off the lights ofc. at this point its dark and shit, you can only see glowy eyes and the power bar, rest is just a shadowy figure. punches of all sorts are faster, foxy is agitated quicker, music box timer is shorter, and just all around not very good to be here.

idk fully abt this idea but also maybe a star punch could just wind back all timers regardless of where they are including foxy (except the power ofc), and the t3 just fully resets em. if you hit it anyway.

and thats abt all the mechanics i feel could be fitted into this without it being too much to also juggle with punching

having to ‘manage’ a bunch of lil parts on freddy like the music box and the various Foul Helium Children is SUCH a fun idea and in adore it immensely

AND HAVING TO QUICKLY FIND FOXY IN THE CROWD BEFORE HE JUST. FUCKING BOOKS IT TO THE STAGE AND UPPERCUTS MAC IS MAYBE THE FUNNIEST THING IVE READ IN A WHILE. LIKE!!!! OH NO DONT LET THE ROBOT FOX CATCH YOUR ASS LACKING MAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CJSNSHHSHSHXXG

and the whole power mechanic playing into the actual stage… augh that’s SO cool I love it

This man deadass didn’t know you were living with him

Even when people told him about it, he wasn’t rlly paying attention and didn’t rlly care

Your stuff in his room? He thought it was his or someone just broke into his room and left it there

When he saw you on the toilet however, he just freaked out.

“Why the hell are you shitting in my room!?” “Your room? I’ve been living here for 2 months!”

Once he found out you lived with him, he made sure you knew what was his and what was yours

also, since he’s very protective of his things-- you being one of them-- he would totally get jealous if he caught you tallking to someone that wasn’t him.

he would probably give you the silent treatment and act like a pissy baby

He hates it when you touch his stuff

especially his photos, the photos were special to him because they were of him and his army friends.

You’d sometimes catch him looking at the photos with a longing in his eyes, it was highkey sad.

having you live with him meant lots and lots of training

he made sure you were always prepared for matches and that you don’t get downed early

when you got downed early however, He would scold you but he would still rescue you anyways because he’s soft

“You’re such an idiot, you’d better do better next time! Or else I’ll kick your ass.”

one time he got cocky while kiting because you were watching him

he forgot to turn on his elbow pads and face palmed into the wall.

“...You saw nothing.” He turned around, a bit woozy from hitting his head on a wall. He flipped the hunter off before stumbling wooshing away

When you first get to know naib, he’d probably come off as intimidating and menacing

but once you get to know him--the real him--, you start to understand that even though he may be tough on you, its because he wants you to be the best

he has good intentions

During matches he’d let you handle yourself and made sure you didn’t rely on him too much

One time you needed to shower but you ran out of your shampoo so you used his.

When he questioned you, you simply responded “What? You don’t need it anyways, you’re bald!”

He didn’t rescue you the next round.

should’ve seen that coming

though he forgives you when you braid his luscious long existent hair for him

Kurt Frank

The amount of times you almost stepped on this man is astronomical.

he would constantly be in his tiny form because he would lose a lot of his things

his tiny form helped him find his things easily

Though when you first moved in with him, you had no idea what his ability was

so when you first saw a tiny version of your roommate you thought he was just a weird doll

until you heard him say a tiny, “Hey can you move your ginORMOUS foot? You’re stepping on my book.”

You fucking screeched and took off your shoe to try and kill him

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH”“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH”

After he explained to you about his ability you calmed down a bit and spared this tiny man but only this time!

Frank loves books, he probably filled your shared rooms with stacks on stacks of books

You’d often see him tiny, waving at you while you’re decoding

Once you overhead Kurt arguing with First Officer over who was the rightful owner of some sort of treasure map

They fought for days,

kurt would constantly complain about it to you

turns out it was just a game on the back of a Cereal box.

Would be a little awkward at first, but the awkwardness slowly fades away when you both make bad jokes

she gives me childhood best friend vibes

Has her doll sitting in the corner of your shared room room, it’s lifeless eyes scare the living shit out of you in the dark you try not to make eye contact, afraid it’ll curse you or smth

if she was mad at you she would move the bot in a way that looked like it was flipping you off you off in your direction before you went to bed.

Always making little robot things that are super fun to play with

Loves sharing her things. Has no problem with it

It hadn’t been a long night so far, but you knew that was about to change. You and your long time friend group had rented a house for the next few days- as a means to get away from your work and school lives for a little vacation. Amongst the seven of you, Tanaka, your long time crush from high school, was also there.

After getting settled in, you all had come to the realization that it was getting pretty late, it was your first night in the house, so going on wasn’t the best idea- especially given that it was nearing 1 in the morning and it was snowing outside.

You’d all settled on playing a game of truth or dare, much like your group used to do when you were younger and all hung out.

A few pizzas and other snacks were sat in various parts of the small living room, a few people with drinks in their hands and a couple bottles laying around ready to be opened. A few individuals sitting on the floor, one of your buddies laying upside down on the couch, one laying with their feet in the air on the floor, and another sitting normally on the couch cushions tucked into a blanket- in all your respective places. It really reminded you of the good old days with your friends, and you found yourself smiling at how you guys truly never changed, even when life around you all did.

About an hour into the game, a spin of the bottle in the middle of your circle decided it was your turn to suffer through whatever your friends wanted you to endure. You knew they cared about you dearly and would never force you to do anything that would harm you, but the fun of the game was coming up with outrageous ideas, so you knew what to expect from previous rounds.

You replayed the comforting message in your head over and over until your best friend decided on their dare for you. You nearly choked on your drink upon hearing it.

“Jump in the pool, right now.”

A round of laughter spilled from the circle, and you couldn’t help but playfully remind them that it was the dead of night, winter, and snowing. They didn’t have much sympathy for you, since your best friend, the one who chose the house you’d be staying in, knew the temperature of the water could be changed in the pool, which is why it hadn’t frozen over despite the frigid temperature outside.

You pouted, not wanting to jump into the pool in your shorts and tshirt all while it was snowing outside- but you knew they wouldn’t give you time to change. An all too familiar voice rang through the air with laughter behind it as you began to fall backwards onto the floor with your arms spread- mumbling a complaint towards the ceiling about your choice of a dare over another truth.

“I’ll join you, it can’t be that bad! Come on, it’ll be fun!” Tanaka was always a sweetheart, and one of the reasons you’d fallen for him so long ago was because he was always considerate of others. He didn’t want you to go alone, especially since it was 1am and he also was in the unknown about the pools temperature changing. If you were gonna suffer, he decided he’d want in on all the fun. ;)

Making your way to the back door, he slid it open and the two of you were immediately bombarded with a bite of the cold air. Shivering already, you tossed aside anything you had on you that you didn’t want wet, Tanaka following suit, and padded your way across the worn wooden porch to examine where you’d be jumping momentarily.

The porch awning was adorned with warm colored string lights, and other than that the only light was from the glass windows and door attached to the house, and the color changing ones on the walls of the pool interior. You had to admit, it made for beautiful scenery- with the flurries of snow complimenting the environment around you. You mentally gave your best friend credit for finding such a little slice of heaven.

After closing the door behind the two of you, a few of your friends appeared behind the glass recording the scene about to unfold for future blackmail- probably when they wanted food but were too lazy to go get it themselves.

Amongst the few, your best friend slid a hand to the remote that lay dormant on the table, turning up the temperature to the pool. F/n knew of your crush on Tanaka, but they didn’t tell you of their plan to get you two alone together.

“On three?” The bald boy asked, grabbing your hand in his proportionally much larger one and nodding his head to the side. He could see your shivering, but he had taken note of the steam beginning to arise from the water.

“Yeah, sure, you count!” You rushed, gripping his hand tightly, maybe it wasn’t only because you were cold, but also that you needed to get this dare over with or else you just knew you’d say something embarrassing around the cute boy.

On a count of three, you both jumped into the pool, and after the initial shock of the spontaneity from the situation, you rose above the warm water, shaking the water off of your face and rubbing your eyes. Tanaka smiled brightly at you, both slightly panting, the two of you laughing together and basking in the situations entertainment.

The cold breeze nipped at your exposed body, your tshirt clinging to you and beginning to freeze. You sank back down into the steamy water, and watched with brightly entertained eyes as Tanaka began his usual chaotic tendencies- flinging off his shirt and splashing around in the water, hoping out of the pool just to dive back in before popping up nearer to you and laughing so loud you swore it could be heard inside the house.

“Let’s hang out here for a while, we’ve been playing for so long, and the waters warm.” He suggested, he looked so hopeful and excited, he linked his hand with yours once again and pulled you into the middle of the water upon the nod of your head. Giving a small wave to your friends behind the glass, they all went back to the living room to continue their game, leaving you two alone.

After a few more minutes of swimming around, jumping into the water, and general fun with Tanaka, a moment of stillness and quiet had spread over you two- the only noises being the sloshing of water and muffled laughter coming from the house. It all added to the ambiance, and you found yourself smiling brightly while looking up at the sky- the dark sky that made the moon look so much brighter than it did in the busy city, and the stars that looked like you could reach up and grab them with how bright they were.

You were so busy admiring the sky, the voice next to you startled you out of your little daydream.

“Ya know, I’m already really enjoying this trip. And I hardly ever get all sentimental, but it’s just too beautiful out not to right now.” You smiled at the boy, the colorful pool lights complimenting his features, and agreeing with his comment about the sky, but while you were back staring at the stars and the moon, he wasn’t exactly sure you knew what he was talking about.

“Y/n, I need to tell you something that I’ve been putting off for a while now. I don’t know how you’ll react to this, but just hear me out, okay?” He warily began, his eyes held a fear but hopefulness as well, and you couldn’t quite place what he was thinking, but a pit in your stomach grew nonetheless.

A nod of your head signaling him to continue, he found himself looking anywhere but you while he uncharacteristically mumbled his words, “I’ve liked you since high school, and I was always scared to tell you because I didn’t think you felt the same way. This trip gave me the opportunity to confess in a way that wouldn’t be so stressful, with life not being able to get in the way, but now that I think about it,, if you don’t feel the same way it could be even more stressful cause you’re gonna be stuck with me for the next few days- dammit, I didn’t mean to—“ he began to outwardly worry and fidget as the words kept spilling from his lips, until you interrupted his sentence by pulling him into a tight embrace.

“I’ve always felt that way for you, Tanaka. I always thought you were set on winning over Shimizu, so I kinda gave up on the idea of ever confessing to you. But I’m so happy you told me.” You nuzzled into his shoulder with a grateful smile on your face, and he slowly went from shocked to overjoyed- hugging you back even tighter, his large arms squeezing you and his laughter once again ringing through the night.

“Holy shit, I was so scared there for a minute! But did you really not know how I felt about you? I slipped up like a year ago and told b/f/n how I felt about you, I figured they would’ve shared? And you don’t have to worry about Shimizu, she was kind of a cover up for you.” He sounded surprised but still laughed through his words. “Nope, I guess even if they had, my own insecurities would’ve made me overthink the whole thing, and they probably knew that, so they kept it a secret. Sure wish the little shit had told me now though.” You both laughed at your comment, exchanging a few more sarcastic ones, but after another minute, Tanaka laying his forehead on yours brought you back to reality.

It was silent but judging by the wide grin he had and closed eyes, he was content with holding you in his arms for however long you would let him.

June 25: 2x24 The Ultimate Computer

Belated notes on my watch of The Ultimate Computer yesterday.

Kirk’s definitely in Captain Mode today. You can tell when he’s on edge and suspicious and serious.

Yet another old Kirk friend. Does he know everyone in Starfleet?

War games lol. But it’s “not the military.”

Spock is super into this computer.

A-7 Computer Expert Certification.

The crew’s not needed? Wow, okay, this is going to end badly.

“This gadget.” How do you really feel, Kirk?

And there’s Spock literally making faces behind the Commodore’s back. He is soooo that type. He’s like “Jim, are you hearing this? Can you believe this guy?”

I’m insulted on Kirk’s behalf right now. Replacing people with machines so blithely is offensive.

Of course Bones doesn’t like it.

Oh yeah triumvirate walking scene. I love them. it takes so little for me to think ‘what badasses.’ S2 is really stepping up this dynamic in particular.

And Spock is comfortable enough around Bones to be sassy around him

Oh no, the computer is already glitching, and there is no backup and no plan B.... Bones is completely right in his assessment. This is essentially a Titanic situation: way too much hubris involved. Nothing can go wrong so nothing will go wrong so we’ve planned for nothing going wrong!

McCoy has BFF Clearance. He can go wherever he wants.

“It’s the M-5? What happened to Ms 1-4?” Channel #5.

Ahhhh little gratuitous touch to Spock’s arm. They’re In Love.

“There are certain things men must do to remain men.”

“The right computer finally came along.” Damn Bones.

Jim’s suspicions about the computer coming right after that line make it look like he’s jealous that Spock likes it so much.

He’s getting a “red alert right here.” Computers don’t have that kind of intuition.

Jim’s so thoughtful and self-aware. He really cares both about his instincts and about interrogating those instincts for bias and unreasonableness. This is giving me real S1 vibes: the quiet, intelligent, idealized hero Captain at the fore.

This whole scene is perfect, eminently quotable, and sounds exactly like something that could have been written about automation in 2021. You’re okay with it when it’s happening to someone else but then the computer comes for YOUR job....

Uh-h, M-5 is turning off all the lights...

Space merchant marines... good to know.

HOW are the Captain and CMO “non-essential personnel”? The first sign that M-5 is illogical. They should bring some doctor on the landing party mission given that uh humans are going on it and might get injured.

Anyway I can’t wait for Kirk to destroy this bitch and save the day.

Lol it turned off the lights on Bones in sickbay.

Damn, now it’s trying to take Uhura’s job too!

Chekov is so bored.

Spock wants to serve under one man and one man ONLY. Loyalty to one man... sounds like a wedding vow... and Kirk looks so soft...

So, if Spock has to describe to McCoy what that (unnecessary bitchy and catty) “Captain Dunsel” remark means, by saying that it’s a phrase that “midshipmen use at Starfleet Academy,” is this to imply Bones didn’t go to Starfleet Academy?

Spock and Bones are on point today. “Don’t say it’s fascinating.” / “I won’t. But it is... interesting.” This bitch knows exactly what he’s doing.

The computer isn’t a child, guys!

We need powerful computers “so men don’t have to die in space”--like uh that man your computer literally just killed?

I don’t get Daystrom’s logic at all. He talks as if people, like, needed to do work in space, to survive or something. We don’t need to. We want to! We want to go out and meet cool aliens! This guy is no fun.

What is the thing “greater” than fact finding in space that the robots are going to free us to do? Like what is more impressive than SPACE? I don’t even get that.

Time to mix up fake sci fi world-building references with real references! The Nobel and Zee-Magnee Prizes. Sitar of Vulcan.

A theory emerges... the computer acts illogically...Daystrom won’t let Spock near it... I know this isn’t where this is going, but it kind of sounds like they’re implying it’s a scam, lol. He sold an idea he didn’t have so it’s like.. not a real computer.

“We have been pursuing a wild goose.” Aw, bb’s trying so hard to be colloquial. (Also he 100% learned that phrase from McCoy in The Gamesters of Triskellion and now he’s trying it out on Kirk...when McCoy isn’t around.)

Kirk’s really mad at Daystrom now.

The Commodore really set up that dramatic turn to camera there.

Poor Kirk. His ship is being used for evil.

“They can’t destroy the ship, what would happen to the computer?!” Yes, the computer. And the other 19 people and himself but mostly the computer. Daystrom really has lost it.

I love the actor who plays him, though.

“You are great. I am great.” Nothing weird happening here.

Spirk attack! (Spork it out.)

Spock’s way too sure Commodore Wesley is about to die. “He was decent, it’s a shame the ship I’m on is gonna kill him.”

And now another round of Kirk versus the computer and Kirk’s logic wins.

M-5 should argue that it did not commit murder, it committed homicide in self-defense. But then Daystrom didn’t program it with a lawyer’s brain.

It’s uh just gonna leave? Not turn the lights back on?

Kirk is so smart! I know I say this all the time, but it’s true! He knew what to do to save the ship because he knew Bob Wesley. He had formed connections, he had experience and knowledge that doesn’t come from logic. He is not replaceable!

McCoy’s like “Spock, fight me. Debate me Spock. Fight me. I’ll be fun.”

Spock HAS answered the computers versus humans question--he likes humans. He wants to be surrounded by humans.

That was really good! One of the better S2 episodes. Great Kirk, great triumvirate--as a trio and all three sides of the triangle--great sci fi concept, great guest star, great social commentary--still 100% relevant today.

i definitely have to think more about the ‘human computer’ concept. I liked that they specifically went out of their way to explain why the computer was human, how that was part of its design, and then tied that into its creator, his background, his belief system, and his insecurities. I feel like most ‘sentient computer’ or ‘advanced AI’ narratives just assume a computer that’s powerful enough will eventually be alive, which is not something I believe. The scariness of advanced AI to me is the incredible power it has to act quickly, but in a complete black-box way: you can’t literally see the logic string of its thought processes, and nor can you figure them out easily or completely using the creators’ intentions or logic because the machine has ‘learned’ since its inception, and its learning processes are not human. There is a real alienness to them that I find scary. And I do think this ep captured that nuance in M-5: it has the speed and abilities of a super computer, the “human” qualities of its creator for well-explained reasons, and the unpredictability of a mechanism that is NEITHER human nor human-controlled tool. And of course the ep’s ultimate thesis--that humans cannot be completely automated or replaced, and that we should not want to automate or replace humans--is comforting and of a morality I can and want to agree with.

This was also one of those eps that made me curious about the differences in AOS and TOS Kirk--in other words, an ep that relied on his history with Starfleet and his experience, on the reality that he’s a 34 year old man with 15+years of experience in the Fleet. Time, experience, connections, these aren’t things you can replace no matter how smart you are, and I feel like it would have been interesting to see AOS!Kirk deal with some situation that is trickier for him because he’s a Captain with a startlingly small amount of institutional experience. It’s not just about being young or generally inexperienced, in other words--it’s about NOT knowing every Captain, Admiral, and Commodore in the service, it’s about NOT having friends across the galaxy because he just hasn’t had time to make them. Even in deep space, that matters. And I think it’s something that I appreciate more as an adult myself, with actual real world experience of the importance of connections and experience and time, especially in sort of insular or smaller work communities.

Anyway, next is Bread and Circuses! Another great ep for the triumvirate. I can’t believe we’re almost through S2!!

UC 51.06 - Reading vs Strathclyde

When I set out to write my previous blog, on Episode 5, I had planned on getting straight into things, without any introduction at all, but apparently I am physiologically incapable to foregoing at least a little bit of rambling and filled out a good few paragraphs talking about beans on toast and The Americans. With that in mind, I’ll say that this is the extent of the ramble for tonight’s episode, and get stuck straight in - here’s your first starter for ten…

Ounsley gives showers for the opening question. The answer is rain, but Paxman lets her away with the variation. Their reward for this is a bonus set on films whose titles start with the word my. They run riot and take a hat-trick with My Own Private Idaho, My Neighbour Totoro and My Week With Marilyn. Already they are doing better on the five pointers than both teams last week.

The second starter was Mexican Wave and went to Ounsley again, but only one bonus followed. A superb buzz of Borodin from Hutchinson kept Reading in the driving seat - fifty nil going into the picture round (on this subject, I feel like University Challenge should have an anachronistic word for zero, like love in tennis. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know, but for now lets go with… tipota, which is Greek for nothing. Going into the picture round Reading were leading fifty tipota)

This is where the Scots were able to finally get off the mark, with Kirsch identifying the word linking several French departments (I tried to spell this with an extra e because I didn’t think it looked French enough otherwise, but turns out I was overthinking it). They match Reading with a quick hat-trick on the bonuses to halve the deficit.

The music round featured some Spanish rapping, and Hutchinson, like me, was quick off the mark with Bad Bunny (who is brilliant, by the way, though I am aware that he was the most played artist on Spotify last year, so I’m probably not pointing out all that niche of a thing). It is not BB unfortunately, and it is not Luis Fonsa either, which is Monaghan’s guess. He is closer than me and Hutchinson though, because although the part played in the question featured Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsa is actually present on other parts of the song.

On the replacement starter, Ounsley shares a nod with Hutchinson which seemed a bit too close to conferring for my liking, but she’s wrong with Bill of Rights anyway, and is docked five points for her trouble. Strathclyde get the music bonuses, but can only convert on Cardi B, going with Justin Bieber over Drake, when the latter Canadian was the correct answer.

They are harshly punished for saying 1 by route 2 instead of route 2 by one on a question asking for the ratio of the sides on standard pieces of paper in portrait mode (that might be the wrong way round too, the point is that whichever one they were supposed to say, they said the other one, and though the punishment wasn’t harsh under the rules of the question, I don’t know why the orientation of the paper was part of the question in the first place. So I guess it wasn’t harsh, it just didn’t seem fair). Nevertheless, they close in to thirty points, giving themselves a real chance going into the second picture round.

In what was quite a freaky coincidence, I had just finished messaging a girl on Hinge about Midsommar when the picture starter from the film flashed up on my screen. You’d be right to question why I think I have the cognitive ability to be doing three things at once, but it really gave me a start. Reading were quickest to identify it, and Hutchinson went on a bit of a tear on the buzzer from thereon out, not letting Strathie have a sniff until it was too late. He was unable to stop his team from dropping a full set of bonuses on the mottos of football clubs (on which I scored a hat-trick woop woop), but it didn’t matter in the slightest.

Final Score: Strathclyde 110 - 175 Reading

Not the highest scoring of matches, but an entertaining one nonetheless, and it is Reading who now have a shot at making the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

Part 1 of 3

You didn’t know how long you had been locked in that torture chamber. You lost track of time after the 15th electric shock. It started from the handcuffs and expanded to below the knees, firmly glued to the ground, as if all the weight of the galaxy weighed on your shoulders.

Three rounds of stormtroopers came in every day.

Your room was number 6 and, from what you heard the soldiers of the first order muttering to each other, it looked like it was an interrogation room. Not far from the idea that you were made.

How they managed to capture you again was a mystery.

You were supposed to meet with a droid for the transmission of important information but that didn’t show up.

In its place, an army surrounded you in seconds by throwing you on the ground and giving you a violent blow with the kick of their blasters at the base of the head.

You were transported on the ship inside that room, with streams of dried blood on the hair attached to the forehead and questioned incessantly. At first they were cautious, investigating whether such a person was actually aware of important information, but when you resisted they didn’t hold back.

You were certainly a member of the Resistance, and although there was no prejudice within the rebels, you thought you were the most expendable one, compared to the other fighters. You had asked Commander Leia yourself to face that dangerous and uncertain journey after a statement from the alleged spy had been received at Headquarters.

At that point, chained and exhausted, you had the conviction that there had been no spy within the Order. It had only been a trap.

For the umpteenth time, the door to the room swung open with a faint noise. A couple of stormtroopers came in, aiming their blaster rifles at you.

Looking up a little, you noticed that another person was visiting that day. General uniform and banners, red hair, pale skin and a spirited look in his green eyes. You were no doubt in the presence of the First Order general, Armitage Hux.

“Will you be more accommodating today and will you tell us why you were in Minfar?” Commander Spiftz’s tone of voice seemed almost impatient. After all, how many times had that question asked you since the day of your capture?

“I won’t say anything.” You sighed, tired. You tried to look away from the commander’s electric and evil eyes only to find yourself staring at the green and bored ones of General Hux. However, he was who looked away, pointing at something to the right of his subordinate.

You also turned to it and found a droid with strange colors advancing in your direction. He was like BB-8, the droid of the Commander Dameron, but his steel and the red that stood out made him ten times more threatening.

“You know, we have developed a new type of droid. And it is here to show you his usefulness. ”The commander passed a hand covered in black leather gloves on the smooth surface of the robot and that advanced as if he had received direct orders.

It rolled until it was behind you, where you couldn’t follow it with your eyes and froze.

“I won’t say anything.” You continued, despite being intimidated by those overwhelming presences that dominated you in every sense.

“We’ll see.” It was a whisper but it sounded like a premise of something horrible.

Before you knew it, something entered the base of your spine. At the beginning it wasn’t painful, it was like a normal needle in the flesh (those who had already implanted you several times), but then a cosmic pain came, that made you block your breath. Not buried from where it came from, you could not describe in which part of the body it had flowed. The blood had started to boil in your veins like it was red-hot lava and you could feel its rending heat. Your lungs had stopped functioning and your heart seemed to be about to explode in your chest.

The voice didn’t seem to come out for a long time but then you burst into a liberating scream and tears began to flow down your sweaty red cheeks.

You tried to bend over yourself, in a futile way to ease the pain, but the ties on the wrists prevented you from extended movements.

“W-what-what did you do to me …?” You were trembling with convulsions but you managed to slumber terrified words.

“This is only the first stage, rebel scum. If you want me to stop, you just have to say what we want to know.” The commander explained to you, as if talking to a baby. He bent down on his knees, crouching down in front of you, and ran a hand through your messy, messy hair.

“I-I won’t say anything.” You stammered, as already anticipating your destiny. But before the man could torture you again, while pulling your hair, you passed out.

When you regained consciousness, you first noticed that the terrible pain of minutes before had vanished into thin air. Then a light tap on your forehead forced you to quickly open your eyes.

In front of you, a medical droid was taking care of your head injury from days before and at the same time stuck a needle in your arm connected to a gold-colored serum.

“The prisoner is stable, General Hux. The muscle pains due to the Emperical9765 experiment have been alleviated, her defenses have restored order. Besides, she’s awake. ”processed the droid, not stopping his work.

When the droid mentioned the general, you looked around with anxiety and doubts and saw him standing, at a safe distance from you and the robot, with its usual complete and stoic appearance. He took a step forward when he noticed your full attention to him.

In the dense, compressed air of the room, what seemed to be a sort of static electricity that kept your eyes glued to those of red vibrated, you wondered how it was possible that a man could be so rigid and petty despite his young age.

“Why are you doing this?” You asked, curious about the answer that he would have been able to elaborate and in fact that was not long in coming.

“You seem to be aware of important information. We are running out of prisoners to interrogate because of the extermination that the Knights of Ren carry out.” Mechanical and calculated, just like him. “We cannot lose a source, precious or useless that it is.”

He took another step forward, flanking the other torture station by his side and looked down on you with a frown you couldn’t define. Was he disgusted, troubled, anxious, angry? You couldn’t understand it.

And you wondered why you cared so much about his reactions and emotions at the time.

“I won’t say anything.” You now seemed fond of that particular phrase.

Hux seemed to contemplate you just like a few moments you did with him before. Then he spoke.

“The First Order is aware of the reason you were on Minfar. All the generals have move to find the spy.”

The little spit that remained in your throat seemed to dry up at those words. They had discovered your secret, but how? You were sure you didn’t say anything…

“Why are you telling me?” You whispered, shocked by the revelation but not yet weak enough to look away from him.

“No particular reason. What we are looking for is the identity of the spy. “

When the medical droid pushed the dirty gauze away and moved to a corner of the room, the general leaned in half his torso towards your kneeling figure.

"Tell me who he is and I’ll spare you more pain.”

You laughed at the situation that had just arisen. “A general who has lost an entire stellar base in search of a little hope that will restore his honor.” You shook your head, despite the pain in your head giving you a twinge. “You fell down, Hux.”

General Hux was not known as a man who lost his temper or got caught and conquered by anger (Ren was already creating enough problems) but at that moment the desire to reach out and strangle you there on the spot seemed to have taken the best of him.

The electricity that had invaded the room instantly broke when he grabbed you by the lapel of your tattered shirt and his face was dangerously close to yours.

“Tell me!” Was a hiss, barely audible and for a moment you had the presumption of having felt desperation for an answer in the tone of his words. You felt all his anger and fear of that closeness and wondered if it was just your imagination. It seemed to depend on the identity of the spy as his life depended on it.

Before you could let you be captivated by the conflicting sensations that traveled in your subconscious and cancel that uncomfortable connection you didn’t want to be part of, you pulled your head back just enough to give yourself the momentum for a head shot in the nose of the general.

At the moment of impact, like a bolt of lightning, a fire warmed you starting from your forehead to the depths of your soul. You imagined that it was the adrenaline of the moment … but then, like a holodrama, sporadic events began to flash before your eyes with Armitage Hux as the protagonist.

You saw the slap that sent him to the ground as a child by a man who had his own fiery red hair, his growing and admiringly watching the generals of the old Empire, saw him discussing his assassination with a very tall stormtrooper and silver in color (possibly Captain Phasma Finn and Rose had spoken of), the destruction of the New Republic with the powerful First Order weapon with its bloodshot green eyes, Kylo Ren’s Force against him and finally a small Hux flash that inserted codes inside a droid. The droid …

When you came back to reality, it seemed that hours had passed and instead the General was still there, a few steps away from you. He was holding a gloved hand on his bleeding nose that fell against the metal floor.

His eyes were wide and you mistakenly translated him by surprise, and his legs trembled with the effort of standing.

“I won’t say anything!”

Without adding anything else, the general ran away from the room like lightning, leaving the droid behind him and a realized but confused you.

While Hux let himself be cured by a medical droid that levitated in midair, he pondered what had happened a few minutes earlier.

You were certainly a problem for him. If he had revealed what type of droid you were waiting on Minfar, the First Order or rather General Allegiant Pryde, they would have, without a doubt, done their research and however scrupulous and attentive he had been, they would still have gone back to him.

He could not allow such a dangerous person to remain alive. This would have meant a certain death for him and the end of his purpose.

He had witnessed torture on the new experimental test solely to make sure you died before uttering spy information. However, you had not opened your mouth even after the terrible situation to which you had been subjected and whose effects Hux knew perfectly well.

With that willpower that arose only from members of the Resistance, he was impressed.

He thought of going to visit you, to check your vital values and clean it up to prevent you from dying from bacteriological infections but what he discovered being in your presence didn’t please him at all.

He had tried to force you again and still you had resisted in the worst way. You looked at him with pity and misery, not realizing that you were in the presence of the spy you were waiting for.

The droid he had sent to Minfar had been blocked for checks and delayed his arrival on the planet. And so you had been captured, after a possible traitor’s voice had rushed to the ship.

Hux, for the unexpected event, had decided to give up but when the torture began on you, certain that sooner or later you would reveal his secret, he decided that it was better his betrayal was worth the effort. He had found another way to transmit information and get it to order by not allowing anyone to know his identity, not even to a droid.He inadvertently moved when his head throbbed with pain and the medical droid stopped his work. He still had little flashes of your life that tumbled in his mind.

After the impact, something happened that he never expected to happen in his life.

He had found what appeared to be his soulmate.

He had read years before this legend, the soulmates were discovered through a touch of skin to skin but he hadn’t expected your small and boring background to be revealed to him. Daughter of sympathizers of the New Republic, your father who died in the battle against the Empire and your mother still in the service of the Resistance. You were a ground soldier, trained hard by the other rebels.

The connection had lasted a few seconds but Hux realized that in his mind it was as if a database had been implanted with data exclusively aimed at you.

But your name, he still didn’t know your name.

In the following days, after he managed to convey the message of the return of Emperor Palpatine to the Resistance, Kylo Ren confirmed in front of all the officers and generals that there was a spy among them. However, due to the inconvenience the rebels were creating, the torture of the prisoner was sporadic until it was completely exhausted.

Hux had never visited you that day but was checking on you and looking through the cameras inside the interrogation room 6. He would not have risked ending up with a hole in the head of a blaster to probe his soulmate.

Until the day they caught the Wookiee who traveled with Han Solo.

The Fall – The Post-MES Years

It is now two and a half years since the passing of Mark E Smith and, therefore, the end of The Fall. In her show, “Savage”, comedian and writer Alice Fraser notes that “only the unfinished contains the infinite” and there was something not just sad but also oddly inappropriate about The Fall being finished and the catalogue therefore finite. Of course, the music industry doesn’t work like that and we have had no shortage of opportunities to add to our Fall collections since January 2018.

On the whole, the array of releases that have emerged since Smith’s cruel and premature death have been every bit as mixed a bag as one could have expected had one been sufficiently engaged with those which appeared in his lifetime. The quality, price and value of these additions to the catalogue have all the highs and lows we had come to endure from the mid '90s forwards and range from the essential to the unnecessary, from the delightful to the unedifying, from the respectful to the vulturous (in the aftermath). This is going to take a few posts so let's call this Part 1 and let’s leave those that beggared belief for now and look at those that rewarded belief in Beggars...

Beggars Banquet could be said to have waded in quite quickly but we need to be fair to them. The Arkive, as the catalogue and reissues division of the label is known, had long noted the ever-growing market for vinyl and had been quietly putting some classics from the BB catalogue back onto plastic for quite some time. It was, therefore, inevitable that they would do this for The Fall. After all, they had already included the group among their “Omnibus” editions and also in their “5 Albums” series. There was precedent: in 2015, The Arkive took over the LP pressings of “The Wonderful And Frightening World...” and “This Nation's Saving Grace” again, having previously licensed these to Vinyl 180. Each was appended with an accompanying second LP which pulled together the singles and b-sides from around each of those albums: “The Wonderful And Frightening Escape Route To...” and “Schtick: Yarbles Revisited” respectively. A few copies of these were made available separately too, just in case they were accused of double dipping. Fair play.

In August and then October 2018, two further vinyl-only reissues were added – a respectful enough distance. First up was a new pressing of the “458489” A-Sides collection. White vinyl was used to match the artwork and new inner sleeve was designed but, given that this was quite a long LP to start with at 17 tracks, it was a shame that the opportunity wasn't taken to press it onto two discs and use the full length “Cruiser's Creek”. This was followed by a 30th anniversary reissue of “I Am Kurious, Oranj” on, inevitably, orange vinyl with the original gatefold sleeve restored as well as a reproduction of the programme for the Edinburgh Festival run of the ballet from 1988. However, the versions of some tracks match to the longer takes on the original cassette and CD editions rather than the original vinyl and a small audio clip from the show that featured on the 1988 first press LP fell by the wayside too. Whilst the programme added value, the decisions regarding the audio made it feel like a “collector's item” rather than a proper reissue of the original vinyl.

The new edition of “IAKO” brought renewed requests for film of the ballet to be released. Over the last decade or so, it has become apparent that there was more footage captured than was thought at the time but that this is either in an antiquated format (Ellen Van Schuylenburch has this, it seems) or has been lost/wiped (the BBC). It seems likely that this simply isn't coming – even if Van Schuylenburch does have a full shoot, the condition of the tapes after 30+ years would be an issue, as would the cost of making any kind of transfer and restoration. The likelihood is that the cost involved simply couldn't be recouped for such a niche item. As frustrating as it might be, as with the “Hey Luciani” play, this one has evaded capture. Still, all is impermanence.

However, in 2019, the real boo arrived. The remastered and expanded reissue of “Bend Sinister” finally (FINALLY!) emerged, the gap in the Beggars Banquet years filled at last with the first new edition of the group's divisive 1986 album since....well, since 1986. This is actually quite astonishing given how regularly many of their albums have been retooled but all credit to Arkive; for one thing they can't be accused of flooding the market and for another, when they did the job, they did it right. Whilst there were a few exhales at the price (£22.99 felt like a lot for a double CD but was, I suppose, a relative bargain for the 2LP set), the results were an absolute joy and this is – in fairness to everyone – the only release since Smith's death that has told us anything we didn't already know about The Fall.

All that trolling, snidey waffle about the album being mastered either too slow or entirely from cassettes was killed off once and for all. The layer of fog lifted from the album in the remastering process demonstrates that the group were not necessarily playing at concert pitch in every session and that only 2 of the album's songs came from Smith's fabled wonky Maxell; we had already guessed “Riddler!” was one of them due to the audible wobble and hiss at the end of the track but it turned out the other was “Terry Waite Sez”. We were partly compensated for the latter with an alternate, slightly longer mix taken from a studio master but your bottom line here is that “Bend Sinister” had never sounded better and the album's long shadow was finally cast off. It turned out that the relative griminess wasn't actually a core part of the album's sound (unlike, say, “Dragnet”) and letting the light into “BS” was a relief as well as a thrill. The second disc collected the group’s 1986 singles and their flipsides (every one of them absolutely first class) as well as their Peel Session from that year and a few alternate takes for the faithful, the best of which was an early stab at “Entitled” which crackles with raw energy. Oh, and the previously cassette-only “Town And Country Hobgoblins”, now with both channels audible.

OK, it took a looooong time but the Beggars Banquet years have now been perfectly preserved; the Omnibus editions of “TWAFW...” and “TNSG”, the 2CD “BS” and the “5 Albums” set give us great sounding versions of all the released material as well as an array of contemporaneous outtakes and live tracks to expand and round out our view of what remains, for some, a controversial era of The Fall's tenure but is, for most, one of their most persistently rewarding periods.

MAY 2020 BC ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULES & REVIEW

Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of June 7 KST:

A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly limit).

A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on the monthly schedule.

food tw // Though founder Kim Byungchul’s 52nd birthday falls this month, it’s one event he’s decided not to throw a party to force invite all of his artists to attend. Heads of various company departments have chosen to celebrate to honor their CEO anyway and cake and ice cream will be available at BC headquarters on May 2 for anyone who happens to drop by that day, no stiff dress code, social obligations, or mandatory attendance attached. It’s more a reason to raise lowering employee morale than a genuine show of appreciation for their boss, but it keeps up appearances, something BC Entertainment is notorious for caring deeply about.

BC Soloist 1

It’s her second college festival season since debut (with her first being last fall) and she’s in even higher demand now than she was last time. BC has booked her for two festivals this month and her set list will include ‘Why Don’t You Know”, “Roller Coaster”, and a cover of “Bang Bang”. That isn’t all she has to juggle this month, as she also continues comeback preparations. This month, the focus is on fittings and choreography for both the title track and b-side “BB”.

Decipher

At the beginning of the month, Decipher finishes recording their comeback album and then they jump into learning the choreography for “Love Paint”, as well as b-sides “R.L.T.L. (Real Love True Love) (One Morning)” and “Look (A Starlight Night)”. That will be their main workload until the end of the month when they celebrate their twelfth debut anniversary with a special group VLive to connect with fans and thank them for standing by their side, and then, a university festival performance the following day. Twelve year veterans or not, they can’t escape being sent out by BC to earn all the money they can by being one of the more acceptable boy group choices for university festivals.

↳ CHAMPION

The official announcement of CHAMPION is made on the 5th and the reaction seems to be more negative than positive at first with some passionate fans of all three groups raising objections out of concern for group or solo schedules for their favorite idols. Dimensions and BC may not have anticipated the exact level of backlash the news gets, but their only choice is to operate on the idea that all publicity is good publicity. The goal this month is to get fans used to seeing everyone together by beginning to release content of them and even having an Instagram live as the first official live event with all six sub-unit members together before they make their debut next month. In preparation for the sub-unit’s tour, the members will be recording and learning the choreography for two new songs (”Dangerous Woman” and “With You”) this month, too. Furthermore, all members of the sub-unit who have made a solo debut as of the end of May 2020 will be informed they will be given a solo stage of their latest promoted solo single to pad out the tour set list.

BEE

The fact that they only wrapped promotions for their comeback last month and 2BEE will be busy with promotions until the end of June means nothing when money and brand deals are on the line, so BEE is already in concept meetings for their next comeback at the beginning of the month. It’s a requirement to squeeze in a full group summer comeback, and this time BC is leaning a little cuter, or “more refreshing” in management’s words, than they have for their past few comebacks to avoid wearing out BEE’s image and making the general public tired of them. They’ll be in the studio to record their new mini-album up until the end of the month, which a few university festival performances in between.

↳ 2BEE

The sub-unit has practice to do to perfect their debut stages throughout the month, but for the most part, they’re ready to go and BC trusts their abilities as members of a senior group within the company. To BC’s credit, they’re spot on, as the song does well. Though it doesn’t live up to BEE’s digital performance entirely, it does do well with the public amid some strong competition, and that’s a good sign.

Knight

As ignored as their anniversary may have seemed last month, the members of Knight are granted a company gift after the end of their tour in the form of a vacation from May 6 to May 19. During this time, the members (excluding those in CHAMPION, who have work to do for their sub-unit debut) will be freed from any group schedules and will be permitted to travel abroad as long as they are accompanied by a manager.

Lipstick

In May, Lipstick will hold their Dress To Shine Japanese tour. For this, they’ll be in Tokyo from May 7 to May 10 and May 14 to May 17, as well as Osaka from May 18 to May 20. After they return from their tour, their performing isn’t done for the month as they go through the rounds of university festivals they should be used to after years of being one of the more in-demand groups at such festivities. Time will be dedicated to comeback preparation as well, namely fittings and choreography practice for "Wild” and “Action”, ahead of their comeback next month.

BC has also managed to book them for a university festival, something they’re not used to doing many of, as a boy group without an overly broad audience among the college-aged general public.

It doesn’t seem a comeback is being considered yet, but they were a useful experiment for the company.

WISH

Schedules this month mostly consist of public performances: one university festival and two Japanese fanmeeting dates. The fanmeetings are to promote the single they’re release in Japan on the 22nd and to hype fans up for the full album release next month. WISH is back to touring next month, so the members should appreciate having only their flights to and from Japan this month while they can.
