Gene Kelly (Singin’ in the Rain, An American in Paris, The Pirate)—It’s hard to know where to start with Gene Kelly because he did so, so much, of such a high quality, from the ballet scenes in “An American in Paris” to the classy suave movie star act of “Singin’ in the Rain” to the incredibly camp, sexy “The Pirate”. He just never stopped finding cool ways to do things and he’s just brilliant to watch, especially when he’s dancing, but even when he’s doing drama or being silly! He’s one of those guys who could genuinely do it all and just radiates charisma through the screen, literally an #icon in every sense of the word.

“What was Bill like as a kid?”

Mail had been passed around and while Frank opened his care package from Maria, he couldn’t help but ask. From the moment you met each other in the group home you and Billy made the world feel like hell. He was over protective, rowdy, didn’t follow rules while you were a mastermind, quick witted and sarcastic. Everyone at the group home thought you two would end up married while they couldn’t be further from the truth, at least in your mind.

“Billy and I made the group home a shit storm. The volunteers all hated us, you never saw one without the other. He was an asshole, I’d call him a slut, but he’s my best friend. Wouldn’t trade him for the world”

A grin crossed your face. Billy was a year older than you so he had enlisted earlier, all but begging you not to also enlist. Of course it didn’t work, it never did. The second you turned 18 you enlisted, going off to training before eventually you’d both been hand picked for Operation Cerberus.

“Don’t slut shame me”

Came Billy’s voice, pulling his head from his book. A Picture of Dorian Gray, you had introduced him to the book and he fell in love with the words. Billy had related strongly to Dorian, a man beloved only for his looks as though he served no other purpose. While he saw you in Basil Hallward, an artist never quite happy with their work. Yes the two of you were like the star crossed lovers, as they were never to be together. It simply wasn’t how their tales were meant to end.

“I am slut shaming you, by the time you graduated you had slept with half our school Billy”

You exclaimed, tossing a football at him. A groan elicited from his lips as the rubber made contact with his face. Frank let out a small chuckle. The two of you were like kids around him, the older man often having to stop your petty squabbles. It’s one of the many things you appreciated about Frank. He gave an older brother vibe that was comforting. Once upon a time you thought Billy gave you the same sort of comfort, that was until you realised it was love for which you felt towards your best friend.

“That is over exaggeration and you know it”

Bliss, even in the blistering heat of the desert. The cruel man in charge of Cerberus and the bastards that surrounded you, with Billy and Frank you felt like a dumb kid again. Laughing in the pure bliss of your idiotic jokes.

“Always Billy the Beaut huh?”

Frank chimed in and you smiled at the man. He was your Lieutenant and ranked above you, much like Billy did but he never treated you as less than. Even if your men didn’t think you were a proper fit, Billy and Frank did.

“Well had to do something to distract me from them huh? I mean no shade to Maria and you, you’re a lovely couple but that shit just woulda never gone down for us”

It took you a moment to process who he was talking about and when realisation dawned your face heated up. In a moments notice you felt like a furnace and you couldn’t keep your eyes off of Billy. His face now red like the blood you had seen so many times in the battle field. His eyes occasionally darted over to Frank, begging for help.

“Billy..”

You began but were promptly shut up by Frank covering your mouth. Relief filled you until you thought about the possible output of what was to come. Many times you’d cried to Frank and Maria over your seemingly unrequited feelings for Billy. Was Frank going to tell Billy?

“Nope, not a word. Now Bill they’ve been in love with you since they were a teenager, told me and Maria a lot of stories. You’ve felt the same, so you two dicks are gonna go on a date next time we’re back in New York. Then you’re gonna tell me and Maria what happened, then you can both live the happy life you wanted”

As Frank pulled his hand away from you mouth Billy launched at you, softly kissing your lips. The two of you ignored the cheers from the other Marines, living in the moment you’d dreamt of since your teenage years.

“Yeah I’d like that”

Billy grinned at you, his smile never failing to bring butterflies to your stomach. All over again you were a teenager with a school crush on the hottest guy. Only you’ll always have Billy, even without marriage till death do you part.

oscar wilde, my beloved

The characters in the picture of dorian gray all seem to be inspired by real people in Wilde’s life: Dorian Gray is inspired by the poet John Gray, Lord Henry Wotton was inspired by Lord Ronald Southerland Gower, an artist Wilde met at Oxford and, last but not least, Basil Hallward was perhaps inspired by his friend Frank Miles, a painter. On the other hand, though, we know that Wilde himself was an inspiration for this character, as a matter of fact, as he states: “Basil Hallward is what I think I am, Lord Henry what the world thinks of me, Dorian what I would like to be”. This already suggests how much of a complicated figure that of Oscar Wilde actually is, how he was a man full of contradictions, just as complex as his characters. Basil Hallward and Lord Henry are arguably the most different characters out of the whole book, yet they unite in the character of Oscar Wilde. The key to understanding this man is probably understanding the difference between his true self and the character he created for himself. He is considered to be one of the most fitting examples of the dandy. The dandy persona is based on elegance, taste, paradox, transgressiveness. A dandy’s appearance should be taken more into consideration than his personality, he values beauty more than morality, and beauty to him is all that is exotic, peculiar, extraordinary. This all applies to the character Oscar Wilde would present to the public, as it matches Lord Henry’s persona. If we look more closely, on the other hand, we can notice the tormented self he would hide under the skin of the artist. His true and private self is not far away from these characteristics, yet it is much more profound than this. After the trial the character Wilde created died, along with his reputation and the sort of respect people had for him. The writings that belong to the years of jail and to the following ones, the years of the exile, show the fragile soul of a sensitive man who, far away from the themes of the decadence, narrates in his poetry the italian nature he is surrounded by, appreciating it for what it is, in its simplicity, leaving the decadent obsession for alterity, paradox and corrupted beauty behind, In these same poetries he talks about religion, poets, classical figures and also about sincere, genuine and pure love. His most true and intimate self shows, under the skin of the artist he had so passionately created over the years.

On a last note, something that I personally find extremely interesting is the fact that by the end of the picture of dorian gray the only one who is still alive is Lord Henry. Not Basil, Wilde’s true self, not Dorian, who he hoped to become, but Lord Henry, his fame, the image people had of him.
