To Steve’s utter disappointment, they did not have sex that night, although Eddie had accompanied him home.
When they finally managed to break away from each other, after realizing they were putting on quite a show for the lone fireman who had stayed outside with the truck, the two of them ran through the empty city streets hand in hand, giggling like a couple of teenagers out past curfew.
The apartment was freezing when they arrived. Not the deep biting chill of the outside air but certainly colder than was comfortable. Steve didn’t spend enough time at home to worry about keeping the place warm and cozy, but for the first time in a while he wished he had.
He rushed right to the thermostat, clicking it up to a more acceptable temperature as he muttered apologies, only to find himself being pressed back into the wall a moment later, Eddie’s eager mouth on his, their tongues desperate to get reacquainted. Steve melted into the kiss. It’d been so long since he was with someone like this, he’d almost forgotten what it was like to feel wanted.
“I think I know a way we could keep each other warm until the heat kicks in.” Steve said, taking hold of Eddie’s hand and tugging him along towards his bedroom, aiming to leave no question between them about how much he still wanted this.
He slid Eddie’s leather jacket from his shoulders and carefully laid it on the dresser before dropping onto the bed, pulling the other man down with him. Their lips met again, the touch of them only breaking to tug their shirts off.
Steve clutched at Eddie’s waist, hungry for the touch of bare skin beneath his palms, fingertips venturing lower and lower down the smooth plane of his stomach until his pinky brushed the waistband of Eddie’s jeans.
“Wait wait wait.” Eddie breathed, and pulled back panting from the kiss as he stilled Steve’s hand, keeping it from dipping any lower. “Steve, listen. I don’t know if this is a good idea. I feel like I'm taking advantage of you in a vulnerable state or something.”
“I’m the one who came on to you, y’know.” Steve pointed out.
Eddie tilted his head, as if he didn’t have an argument for that, but still he sat up, angling his body away from Steve, which was not where he wanted it.
“It’s not like I'm drunk or anything.” Steve grumbled.
“No, but it’s late, you're sleep deprived, and telling me all that stuff about your ex earlier? It had to have drudged some things up for you.”
Steve shook his head. “I said I was over it. It’s not… I don’t.” He said, scrambling for the right words to explain.
“I know, sweetheart. I know, but-”
“But you won’t fuck me.” Steve said, fighting not to pout.
Eddie groaned, biting his lip as he shifted to adjust himself.
“It’s not a no,” he said eventually- gently, before reaching out to cup Steve’s cheek. “More like a… not right now. Okay?”
Steve nodded, because what else could he do, and leaned into the touch. At least Eddie didn’t seem to be going anywhere.
They got ready for bed.
Steve knew he should probably have offered Eddie something to sleep in, but the horny part of his brain thought it might be worth it to be seen as a bad host if it meant the other man would be laying next to him wearing nothing but boxers. Eddie didn’t seem to care, nor did he say anything when Steve stripped down as well, even though he’d already been wearing sleep pants.
Unfortunately, their lack of dress didn’t shake Eddie from his apparent resolve. They did share a few more lazy kisses as they got comfortable between the sheets, but before it could go any further Eddie coaxed him onto his side, facing out, and spooned him from behind, his groin an unfortunately respectful distance away.
As pent up as he was, and with Eddie this close, and after all the buildup, Steve didn’t expect to fall asleep so quickly– or so easily, but he was sucked under within minutes. He was just so warm, lying there in the circle of Eddie’s arms. He couldn’t remember a time when he’d felt more comforted and protected. It was a little crazy that someone he’d only just met could make him feel like this.
Steve woke the next morning to an empty bed. It was almost a relief. Though he was more than a little disappointed that Eddie was gone, he was embarrassed enough at the way he’d thrown himself at a relative stranger on the street in the middle of the night to accept that maybe this was for the best.
God, he’d probably seemed like nothing more than a desperate slut looking for a quick rebound, it was no wonder that in the light of day Eddie had come to his senses. And yes there had been a certain amount of instant physical attraction involved when he’d first seen the other man. Lust at first sight, if that was even a thing, but in their admittedly short interaction Eddie had exposed himself as this incredibly sweet and caring guy, so unlike the men Steve usually wound up dating. He would have been crazy not to go for it, but maybe he could have gone about things in a better way- asked for his number maybe, or out on a proper date.
A series of soft bangs sounded from somewhere in the apartment, drawing Steve out of his moping. Either someone had broken in and he was in the process of being robbed, or he’d been a little too hasty in his assumption that Eddie had left. On the off chance that it was the first option, he slid himself into a pair of sweatpants. At least if he was about to be murdered his underwear wouldn’t be broadcast on the evening news.
He crept quietly out of the bedroom and made his way down the very short hall to the kitchen where the noise was coming from. Of all the things he might have expected to see as he rounded the corner, none of them came close to what he actually found.
Eddie was flitting around his kitchen, dancing actually, to the beat of whatever song was playing softly from his phone, looking more at home in this apartment than Steve ever had. He was still just in his boxers, though he had added a frilly red and white polka-dot heart print apron to his ensemble. It was something that Steve had bought for himself last valentines day. Half for fun as a bit of a joke, half hoping to spice up a love life that had become a little lackluster. He thought Tommy would find it cute and sexy to come home and find Steve wearing it along with some matching red lace lingerie while he cooked dinner.
Tommy… had not.
And he made Steve feel so stupid about the whole thing that the lingerie got buried in the closet and the apron shoved into a kitchen drawer never to be seen again, till now.
Steve shook his head at himself. There was a deliciously adorable half-naked man dancing in his kitchen right now, and here he was letting himself get lost in bad memories of his shitty ex-boyfriend, who he really truly did not want anymore. He decided right then and there that this was it. That was the last time he would allow Tommy to enter his thoughts when he’d much rather be enjoying his time with Eddie, however short it might wind up being.
He smiled fondly at the other man’s back, wondering if he should say or do something to announce himself so as not to startle him, before he could decide one way or the other Eddie did a spin, stopping on a dime when he spotted Steve and a huge grin spread across his face.
“Mornin’ Sunshine! Or should I say, good afternoon.” Eddie said, throwing him a wink before turning back to check on something that was sizzling and popping on the stove.
“After… what? “ Steve furrowed his brow and glanced at the clock on the microwave. Two o’clock, holy shit, It really was afternoon.
He stayed hovering in the doorway for a second, unsure of what to do or say and suddenly feeling like a guest in his own home. He felt awkward, and not just because of last night, but if Eddie could be comfortable here, and with whatever this was, then so could he.
“So what’s all this?” Steve said, finally entering the room.
“Brunch!” Eddie replied while flourishing the spatula he was now holding. “I couldn’t sleep anymore but I didn't want to wake you. It seemed like you needed it.”
“I guess so.” Steve agreed absently, wandering over to the still warm and half full coffee pot. Eddie was a saint.
“For someone who doesn’t spend a lot of time at home you actually have a decently stocked kitchen.”
Steve shrugged. “Too expensive to eat out all the time.”
“Think you can keep an eye on this bacon while I finish mixing that up?” Eddie asked, pointing to a bowl of what looked like pancake batter.
“Yeah, of course.” Steve said, taking both the spatula and Eddie's place.
Eddie leaned over and gave him a peck on the cheek and breathed two words into his ear.
“Good boy.”
Fuck.
Steve’s entire body was set alight, his skin breaking out in goosebumps. Eddie gave a deep chuckle as he reached back to untie the apron he wore, taking it off and slipping it over Steve's head instead.
“Can’t have you getting burned or risking losing any of that gorgeous chest hair.”
Steve gulped and stared straight ahead, watching the food cook while he willed his sudden hard-on to go down, a task made all the more impossible as Eddie slid up behind him, tugging on the ties of the apron and tying it into a knot behind his back. When he was done Eddie rested his chin on Steve’s shoulder, and he wanted to cry with how wonderful it all was.
Something must have shown on his face or in the set of his body, because Eddie made a concerned noise, pulling back a little. “I’m sorry if I overstepped with the food, or anythi-
“No.” Steve interrupted quickly, though he didn’t turn around, afraid for Eddie to see just how much it was all affecting him. “No Eddie, this is great. You’re great.”
“Good.” Eddie declared, breathing a dramatic sigh of relief. “Then get ready to be wowed by my pancake flipping prowess.”
20 minutes later both men had batter smeared across their faces, a little had even gotten into Eddie’s curls, and Steve was feeling much more relaxed. They devoured all of the bacon and made a sizable dent in the stack of pancakes Eddie had produced, only some of which were burnt. It didn’t matter, they were still the best pancakes Steve had ever had.
Anxiety returned shortly after their meal, once the kitchen was cleaned up and Eddie asked if he could use the shower. This was it, Steve thought, times up. Eddie would wash up and leave now, probably, say goodbye and go back to his life.
But that wasn’t what happened at all. With his next breath Eddie asked if there were some sweatpants he could borrow to wear so he wouldn’t have to hang around in his jeans, and Steve thought maybe he should stop assuming anything and just go with the flow.
Once they were both clean and wearing all of Steve's comfiest clothes, the pair spent the rest of that day, and then the next, and the next, cuddled up on the couch watching old movies, eating take out, occasionally drinking wine that Steve had stashed in the pantry for a special occasion, and getting to know each other.
It was the longest and most unconventional first date Steve had ever been on, but it was also the most fun.
They made out– a lot.
And Eddie was always touching him. Steve loved it. A hand on his leg or an arm thrown over his shoulders, they were in almost constant physical contact, which made it all the more frustrating and confusing that any time things started to get too hot and heavy Eddie would pump the brakes.
They talked.
Eddie spoke about growing up in a small town, losing his mom when he was young, and having to move in with his uncle after his dad went to prison. He wasn't ashamed of where he came from, it was all part of who he grew up to be, another thing Steve added to his growing mental list of things he loved liked about Eddie.
He told Steve all about his chaotic lesbian best friend and business partner Chrissy. How they had met and forged an unlikely bond in high school, unlikely because she had been a cheerleader and he had run the school’s Dungeons and Dragons group called the Hellfire Club, and been attached at the hip ever since. Hence the name, Hellcheer Studios, Eddie explained, finally admitting that he did in fact own the studio he worked at, which is why he hadn’t been worried about being caught out there late at night.
Steve in turn told Eddie about his high school experience. How he was a popular jock and the captain of practically every team, until he suffered one too many head injuries and was barred from all sports. He became angry and depressed, and his fall from the social ladder had been swift. It was a dark time, but looking back Steve was grateful for it, as it had led him to his own chaotic lesbian bestie, Robin. She was a self-described band geek and someone Steve never would have looked at twice. But after his third week of eating lunch alone in the cafeteria she popped up out of nowhere to sit down next to him and started talking, and kinda never stopped. God he missed her.
As embarrassing as it was, he told Eddie about that too. How he and Robin had a falling out, one that was entirely his own fault. Though he had promised himself not to think about Tommy anymore, when Eddie asked why the situation couldn't be fixed he found himself wanting to tell him everything.
“Tommy thought she was a bad influence on me, probably because Robin thought he was an abusive asshole and kept telling me I could do better. He gave me an ultimatum, her or him, and I chose wrong.” Steve sighed, wrapping his arms around himself. He hated where he’d left things with her, and it was painful to think about their last conversation.
“The worst part is, I knew I was choosing wrong, but I was in love with him and I thought that’s what I was supposed to do, choose him over everything and everyone else. I thought it was the only way to save the relationship and then he left anyway a few weeks later.”
Eddie shook his head. “Jesus, what an insecure asshole. Someone who loved you would never force you to make a choice like that. The more I hear about this guy the happier I am that he’s out of your life. I’m sorry if that’s rude, you just… you deserve so much better.”
By the time the morning of New Years Eve rolled around, another day of waking up to find Eddie still there beside him, Steve couldn’t help thinking about how easy it would be to get used to this, and wasn’t that a dangerous thought?
Because he didn’t actually know what they were doing here. They’d done a lot of talking over the past few days but exactly zero of it had been about their current situation. Eddie had followed him home on a whim and just… never left. Steve was glad he was still here, of course, but he couldn’t bear the thought that Eddie was only here out of pity, and he couldn't keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Steve knew where he was headed. He wouldn’t use the L-word, not even inside his own head, it was far too soon for that, but he could certainly admit that he was smitten. He was falling– fast, and if Edde wasn’t feeling the same way, he needed to know that.
He blurted it out the moment Eddie was awake, before either of them had even gotten out of bed.
“You don’t have to keep staying here, um, I appreciate you keeping me company and all but I think I'll be okay now… “ Steve trailed off, turning to stare at the ceiling while he continued fumbling for words.  “Uh, now that I have some happy memories to override a little of the bad… I’ll be alright here– on my own, is what I'm trying to say. I can be a big boy and sleep in my own bed, promise, I have no plans to go back to spending nights at the office. So you can go home, y’know, if you want. I’m sure you have a life you want to get back to and-”
Eddie cut him off with a kiss.
It was deep and dirty right out of the gate, and for once there didn’t seem to be a stop sign in sight. Eddie climbed on top, caging him in with arms and legs as he attacked the delicate skin of his throat. Steve moaned, hips thrusting up of their own accord, seeking friction and to feel the other man’s hardness pressed against his own.
“Fuck.” Eddie cursed, resting his forehead against Steves for a moment as he ground his hips down in turn, and Steve knew if they kept going he could cum just from this.
It all felt so good, but if they were finally going to do this, he didn't want things to be over so soon. He was glad for the short reprieve when Eddie started to move away, and fought to get control of himself.
He kissed a leisurely trail down Steve's body, dragging his tongue along the length of his happy trail until it reached the band of his boxers. Eddie glanced up, tongue still dipping beneath the fabric even as he looked up at Steve for permission to slide them down, the last barrier between his achingly hard cock and Eddie's plush lips, as if he would say anything but yes to that.
Eddie was a vicious tease. Kissing, licking, biting, and sucking on every square inch of Steve's flesh except for the one area he was begging to be touched, and it made him feel like he was losing his mind. After what felt like hours Eddie finally took him into his mouth. Just a few inches at first, dipping his tongue into the slit and swirling it around the head before sinking lower and bobbing his head.
Right away it was too much and Steve knew he had to stop this now or it would all be over.
“Wait,” Steve said breathlessly. “I’m not gonna last. And I want… ” He trailed off, losing the thread as Eddie took him right to the back of his throat, swallowing convulsively around him. Mercifully, he pulled off right away to check in.
“What is it you want, sweetheart?” Eddie asked, taking Steve's cock in hand and stroking it lazily.
“Inside.” Steve gasped. “Oh fuck, Eddie. I want you inside me before I cum.”
“Of course, baby. Anything you want. Do you have lube? Condoms?”
“Nightstand.”
Eddie bent down to place one more kiss on the head of his cock before slipping off the bed to gather what they needed.
He took his time, opening Steve up slowly, carefully. It’d been so long since he’d had anything more than a toy inside him, and Eddie’s fingers felt so good that by the time he was ready Steve was almost frantic with the need to be fucked.
When he was reduced to nothing more than a babbling mess, Eddie began to push his way inside, one agonizingly slow inch at a time until finally, finally he bottomed out. Tears prickled at the corner of Steve's eyes. He was so full, and it felt like Eddie was splitting him apart- in the best way possible. He surged up and Eddie met him halfway, their mouths locking together in an unending kiss, tongues sliding against each other, searching, tasting, as Eddie began to move.
He set a rough pace right from the beginning, somehow knowing exactly what Steve wanted, needed, and it wasn’t long before Steve came untouched in a hot rush between them. As soon as he could he wrapped his legs around Eddie’s waist, encouraging him not to stop. If anything he wanted Eddie to go deeper, harder, he didn't care if he was overstimulated, he never wanted it to end, though he knew it had to eventually.
With Steve’s name on his lips, Eddie came not long after, pulsing inside, and Steve wished he could feel himself getting filled up.
Eddie pulled out gingerly, rubbing a soothing hand up and down Steve's side as he winced at the feeling. He slid the condom off, tying the end and tossed it in the rough direction of the trash can to deal with later, quickly scooping Steve back into his arms to hold him close as they came down, uncaring of the mess.
Steve let the comfortable silence settle about them for a while, but eventually he had to address it.
“Not that I'm complaining, because I'm extremely happy with what just happened, but, uh… “
“Why now?”
Steve nodded.
Eddie let out a long breath, pressing his face into the sheets to hide his face. “I don’t know, I guess I was just waiting for a sign that you were really ready to move on, and when you said all that it just– finally felt right.”
“You didn’t need to know that to sleep with me.” Steve murmured, carding a hand through Eddie’s hair, keeping it there even when the other boy turned his head.
Eddie looked at him earnestly, expression as serious as he’d ever seen it. “Maybe I didn’t want to just sleep with you, maybe I want something more.”
“Oh.” Steve’s hand stilled, heart fluttering as he dared to hope that he might be about to get exactly what he wanted.
“The last few days have been incredible, Steve. There's something real happening between us, I can feel it. I was afraid if we moved too fast, if you weren't ready, it would ruin it.”
“But… you turned me down the very first night. You couldn’t have known then-”
Eddie smiled, leaning in to press a kiss to Steve’s forehead. “Baby, I knew you were something special the second you called me an absolute fucking asshole, and I knew for sure that I wanted more than just to fuck you when I gave you my jacket and it made you blush so pretty.”
Steve beamed, and could’t resist capturing Eddie’s lips with his own one more time. “I want something more with you too.”
Eddie sighed happily, wrapping his arms even tighter around Steve’s body. “So, now that that’s settled. What do you want to do today?”
“Well, It is New Year's Eve, are you sure you didn't have any plans?”
“There actually is a party I was invited to tonight, I was planning to skip it and stay here with you, but, any chance you’d want to go with me? I’d love to introduce you to Chrissy and her girlfriend.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really!” Eddie said, rearing back. He pulled the pillow out from under Steve’s head and smacked him lightly on the shoulder with it.  “Have you been listening to anything I’ve said? I’m kinda crazy about you, of course I want to bring you home to meet them!”
“Home?”
“Oh, didn’t I mention that? Chrissy and I live together and the party's at our apartment.”
-
A few hours later, after another round in the bed, followed by a third in the shower, they were as sated as they could be and finally got dressed and ready for the party.
Steve went with a simple dark blue henley and his nicest jeans, trusting Eddie when he said the dress code for this get-together was casual. Eddie threw his own clothes back on for the first time since he’d arrived, freshly washed along with a load of Steve's laundry the day before.
After a ten minute Uber ride they arrived, taking the elevator up to the 5th floor. Steve started to feel nervous as they approached the apartment, a feeling that only grew as Eddie turned his head, eyeing Steve warily as he knocked on the door.
Wait, why was he knocking on his own front door?
“So there is one thing I didn’t tell you, and I really hope you won’t be mad at me. It’s about Chrissy’s girlfriend,” Eddie said cryptically, stepping aside to leave Steve standing there on his own as the door swung open, revealing Robin behind it.
“Steve?” She gasped, bursting into tears as she leapt forward and threw her arms around him.
Steve caught her on instinct, mouth dropped open in shock.
Eddie patted him comfortingly on the shoulder, slipping past them and into the apartment, giving them a moment of privacy to talk.
Eventually Robin pulled back, smiling as she took in his face. “I can’t believe you’re here.”
“I’m so sorry, Robin. I was a complete fucking idiot and I wish I could go back and change things, but I can’t, and I’m just so, so sorry, and I woudn’t blame you if you felt like you coud never forgive me, but- “
“Steve, relax! I forgave you a long time ago. I was just waiting for you to reach out to me.”
“I wanted to. Tommy left months ago and I wanted to call you right away, but I was so ashamed. I didn't know if you’d ever want to hear from me again.”
“Of course I do, Dingus. You’re my best friend! I fucking missed you, so much.”
Eventually they ventured inside and Steve learned that there was no party. Eddie had grown suspicious, wondering what the odds were that Chrissy’s Robin, and Steve’s Robin, were the same person. So he’d texted Chrissy about it when Steve wasn’t looking and sure enough he was right. Naturally, they had hatched a plan.
Later, after the newly minted foursome had watched the ball drop on TV and the respective couples shared kisses at midnight, Steve and Eddie found themselves alone in the kitchen.
Steve set his drink down on the counter and sidled up to the other man, taking the glass out of his hand and setting it down as well.
Eddie raised an eyebrow at him and smirked. “Something on your mind that I'll need both my hands free for, baby?”
Steve huffed a laugh, feeling deliriously happy as he took Eddie into his arms. “I just wanted to tell you something,” he said, kissing Eddie soundly before continuing on, “Thank you, for everything, and I’m really glad you set off that fire alarm.”
Thanks and love to @penny00dreadful for being the best cheerleader and beta reader a gal could ask for! 🥰

Part 1 sorry this took so long, the heatwave melted my brain
It took far longer than either of them intended to make it to breakfast, mainly because once Eddie had finished making a mess of the both of them, he had insisted on washing Steve's hair for him, which honestly was the most blissful out-of-body thing that he'd ever experienced; but as the two of them walked down the boulevard together, brushing shoulders and for a lack of a better word, giggling, Steve couldn't remember feeling happier.
Eddie had the most gorgeous smile and every time he directed it at Steve, god! he felt… lighter, like he could float away any second, but at the same time, just by that same smile, he knew without a doubt that Eddie had him tethered safely to the ground.
And holy fuck if it wasn't just the best feeling! It wasn't something Steve had ever experienced before, because yeah, he's got Robin, but she's a steady kind of safety, he knows beyond doubt that they're two halves of a whole, she's his rock as much as he's hers and the day they met something just fell into place for both of them. And he has his little found family, he knows he can go home to them (or they'll come to him) any time, he knows he's safe in their embrace, like they're his shelter in a storm.
But this is different, he barely knows Eddie, hasn't spent more than a few hours with him, but it's like Eddie has this protective bubble around them both, like they're floating along together in this impenetrable shield and the outside world means nothing when he's held in Eddie's gaze, and he just knows he's safe, he can feel it deep in his bones.
And jesus! when they kiss! He's never felt anything like it. It’s like he's filled with bubbles that not only pop but fizzle, like someone's dropped a bathbomb into his chest, letting it froth and effervesce, like it's rolling and twirling around churning up his insides in the most spectacular way, and he almost can't breathe because of it.
It's fucking weird and glorious all at once.
Too much and not enough and he never wants it to stop because he knows he's never felt this way about anyone before, hell he hadn't even known it could feel this way and it's kinda scaring the living shit out of him because what if the last few hours were all Eddie wanted, what if Eddie's here for a fun time and not a long time and Steve has to go back home and learn to live without feeling like this.
Eddie nudged him gently, snapping him out of his spiral into the abyss, his eyes landing on Eddie's warm affectionate grin, following his pointing arm to where Robin and Chris were in the cafe across the street, sitting in a booth by the window, leaning into one another across the table, deep in conversation and grinning brighter than the Nevada sun.
Robin blushed deeply as Chris tucked a stray piece of her hair behind her ear, and Steve had seen that look before (usually aimed at him) but he'd never seen her look like that before, not with Jamie or Izzy and certainly not with Sammi ("Sammi with an 'i'", god he'd really hated her), because yeah she was blushing, that was nothing new, but she looked comfortable! She wasn't ducking her head, becoming all flustered and shy, no, she looked relaxed, confident even, like she'd known her forever.
The pair were so engrossed in each other that neither of them even glanced up as the bell above the door jingled when he and Eddie entered. Robin completely missing the way Eddie’s hand fit so naturally into the small of his back as he guided him gently over to their table. Steve felt giddy from it, like he was floating on air! It was so incredibly intimate and a little bit possessive, like Eddie couldn't keep his hands off of him and Steve just knew it was going to be his main topic of conversation for at least the next century.
Honestly, he couldn't even be that mad that she'd missed it, not when he saw how content and engrossed she was with Chris. He hadn't seen her smile that much since Vickie, which now that he thought about it was far too long ago for his liking. Normally on first dates she went for this cool, aloof thing, trying to push her real personality down for reasons Steve had never understood, but Robin was genuinely smiling, her real toothy, goofy grin as she chatted animatedly.
And Chris seemed equally spellbound, eyes wide and nodding, giggly and captivated. Not that it was surprising to Steve, Robin had always had this otherworldly quality about her; his best friend was beautiful, anyone could see that, but if she was passionate enough about a topic, she seemed to glow and her voice alone became sort of mesmerising.
Like the one time they’d actually got to work early, during a particularly cold snap, and while they were waiting for Jeremy to open up, Robin had started to tell Steve all about Yetis and the difference between Bigfoot and the Abominable Snowman. Only what neither of them realised was that instead of having a ten-minute chat, they’d actually sat there for three hours. Unfortunately, they were already on their last warning for being late, so it had got them fired, but they weren't too bothered, the worst thing about it was trying to find a new job in below-freezing weather.
The girls only really looked away from one another when he and Eddie slid into the booth next to their respective best friends, both still dressed up to the nines, Robin's mascara all but gone, bits all down her cheeks from where she'd rubbed at it. But it was her beaming smile told Steve all he needed to know, she was elated, she'd had a brilliant night, she couldn't wait to relay every detail to him later, and oh my god, Evie, she's amazing, I think I'm in love!
That sent Steve's attention across the table, the two best friends seemed to be having a similarly telepathic conversation, their attention quickly turning away from each other back to Steve and Robin. But it was funny how Chris and Robin had almost precisely timed Steve and Eddie’s arrival because no sooner had Steve been reintroduced to Chrissy, "Eds' BFF, platonic soulmate and personal cheerleader!", the waitress arrived with food for the four of them.
Steve was kind of glad for the distraction of plates and cutlery and condiments because shaking Chrissy's hand had sent another vision into Steve's mind of meeting her and Eddie the night before and as far as he could remember he was being so embarrassingly obvious in his attraction to Eddie, that he'd barely taken his eyes off of him long enough to have the common decency to even glance in her direction.
Being pathetically obsessed within the first five minutes, real smooth Steve!
They ate silently to begin with, happily just enjoying their meals; the food was delicious, and it had been far too long since any of them had had any proper nourishment. And Robin, his heavenly, wondrous Robin, had ordered his favourite dish, which with every mouthful was soothing the lingering aches of his hangover and given the blissed-out little moans slipping out of Eddie every now and again, he was clearly enjoying whatever meaty, eggy, goodness Chrissy had ordered for him.
Eventually though, sitting across from Eddie started to become just a tiny bit tortuous, especially when one particular groan, resonating from the back of his throat, brought forth a very clear vision of Eddie on his back in bed, making that very same sound as Steve kissed his way down his body. Fucking hell!
Suddenly Steve wasn't all that embarrassed about whatever he'd done that'd attracted Eddie to him because he truly was a sight to behold, in bed or otherwise.
Steve's attention was snapped away from thoughts of naked-Eddie back to the cafe when Chrissy giggled, at what he wasn't sure, he could only assume it was an inside joke when Eddie elbowed her playfully, snorting and mumbling a whined "shut. up!" even though she hadn't said a word. His pretty dimples coming out as he shoved more food in his mouth, keeping his gaze on his meal and smiling reluctantly around his fork as she cackled beside him.
Robin nudged him under the table with her foot and gave him a look that said "this dork, really?" And Steve couldn't help but grin because yes this dork and his adorable cheerleader, if it were up to him they'd keep the pair of them forever because watching the two best friends tease each other was just too fucking cute! Almost like looking through a picture book filled with their rich history, their deep adoration etched into the smiles on every page.
Steve didn't know what it was about them, they just both had that something; Robin would call it an aura, but it just felt good to be around them. The happiness they shared together exuded, pulling you in rather than pushing you out and Steve just wanted to bask in it, like he was Yurtle and Eddie and Chrissy were the heat lamp.
Steve knew he hadn't always been the best judge of character, he'd been duped a time or two, but he trusted Robin's instincts, if she thought Chrissy was a good person, good enough to spend all night with, good enough to maybe be in love with, then Steve believed it unquestionably, because in all the time he'd known her she'd never been wrong about someone.
She'd never liked Ashley and quite right too given the little rat was the one who'd been feeding HR all the reports that'd got them both fired. She'd hated Billy from the minute she met him, and well the less he thought about that the better. She’d felt the same abhorration for Carl, the electrician who as it turned out was wanted in several states for crimes he didn't like to think too closely about, given he'd left Robin alone with him.
When, in a fit of desperation, Steve had joined a dating service and met Angel (or SheDevil as Robin liked to refer to her as) who as it turned out was one of his dads "business associates" who (for some sick reason neither of them could fathom) had wanted to sleep with Steve; Robin had gone berserk, they’d had a massive fight before he’d left for his date but even when he came back shaken and tempestuous, she never said I told you so, she just wrapped him up in a blanket, made him a hot chocolate and let him cry into her shoulder until he felt better.
That was the day he decided he was always going to trust her gut unconditionally because it was clear she would always just know better than he did.
So Steve knew Eddie and Chrissy must be something truly special for Robin to be so comfortable around them, for her to let Steve get married because as much as she claimed she was powerless against his determination, they both knew that wasn't true. He was well and truly wrapped around her little finger and if she'd said no and meant it he would've trusted her intuition implicitly. She was his soulmate for a reason, not only because he wasn't entirely sure he could survive without her, but because she was the brains of the pairing; he still wasn't entirely sure how he’d managed to stay alive for the first two decades of his life without her.
He'd been so deep in thought that he started when Robin began chatting perpetually again; it was uncanny how she always did that, like she could almost sense that was thinking about her, so she’d just start talking, about anything and everything. He'd missed the white noise of her voice, like he always did when she was quiet, mainly because if her voice wasn't filling the space, his mind just had this tendency to run away with him, like a train on a track heading downhill.
Although, he could’ve lived happily without the vicariously embarrassing blow-by-blow of the night before.
Apparently, the four of them had met each other in the third club Steve and Robin had been in, Steve had spotted Eddie across the room and immediately started his five-drink-Steve ritual of making it his mission to keep Eddie forever.
No-one was more surprised than Robin when Steve's tactics had actually worked, her and Chrissy clicking over their mutual love and mortification they felt for their, platonic with a capital p, soulmates.
Apparently, nine-drink-Eddie had decided to ask twelve-drink-Steve to marry him, Steve, somewhat unsurprisingly, gave him a teary yes before he'd really had the chance to finish asking.
They were married by a man Robin was convinced was actually Elvis (nobody had the heart to correct her).
No-one could decide who should hold the bouquet, so they had one each, both girls caught Eddie's, whereas Steve, for all his sporting prowess, managed to hit the receptionist in the face with his, getting them promptly thrown out of the chapel.
Steve was already half naked before they'd even made it back to the hotel, it was undecided who'd undressed him. A mystery only Vegas knew the answer to. They’d made it across the hotel lobby by the grace of god and because Chrissy had played her "help the pretty blonde card" with the guy at the front desk as a distraction.
Robin had no more details for their night, but Steve was pretty sure he could piece the rest of that together himself, he was just glad the lift had been empty after all.
And the girls had had a whale of a time after they'd ushered the newly-weds off to bed, they'd carried on to several venues, including a drag show, another wedding (one that was actually planned for longer than five minutes!) a concert, three more bars, and finally headed back to the hotel.
"And then Chrissy rang Nancy! Oh my god, Steve! It's such a small world, right, 'cause Eds and Chris are from Indy too. It's crazy we've never met, huh? But anyway, we were thinking how funny would it be if Eds' dickhead ex opened the paper this morning to find out he's already moved on, and not only that, moved on with the King of Hawkins High himself! 'Cause Eds' ex is from Hawkins, like you! I bet you knew him! But yeah, turns out Chris knows Nancy, you know, your Nancy and well..."
Robin was definitely still speaking, but Steve's ears had started to ring again, not because his head was hurting but because he was pretty sure he was about to throw up! Nancy had put their wedding announcement in the Indy Independent, the very paper everyone he'd ever known read, including his parents! Not that he cared what they thought, but going from fired to married in a little over a week was a twist even for him. And Hop and Claudia! They were going to go absolutely mental! And the kids! At least they’d probably find it a little funny, unlike Hop who’d blow his top for sure.
Well, that's one way for everyone to find out! And no doubt Nancy found it beyond hilarious.
He and Nancy hadn't parted on the best terms. They'd broken up during a massive argument two days before their first anniversary, apparently he'd wanted more than she could possibly give him because she "just couldn't imagine staying with the same guy forever", only for her then to start up with her photographer boyfriend a few weeks later and as far as Steve knew they were still together all these years later, so that was obviously utter bullshit.
When Steve had continued babysitting the kids they'd tried to be friends, well given how little time they ever spent in the same room together, he supposed that classed as them trying to be civil, mainly for Will and Mike's sake, but Steve was grateful when Jon and Nancy had moved away after graduation.
And Steve didn't see them again for a long time, it was just sods fucking law that he happened to bump into them right after everything had imploded with Billy.
Robin had finally convinced him to go with her to a club she knew, he hadn't really wanted to be there in the first place and seeing Nancy again was the last thing he needed, feeling far too sore for the pitying look she gave him, he'd kicked off big time, trying to get her to admit that the real reason she'd left him was because he was just unlovable.
It wasn't his best night, and given she'd left in tears, it probably wasn't hers either. So he's no doubt she found it laugh-out-loud pathetic that the only way he'd eventually got married was to a total stranger while off his tits on holiday.
Steve glanced over at Eddie to see he'd gone white as a sheet, he gently called his name a couple of times, but he seemed to be in a world all of his own. Steve wanted to reach for his hand, but he wasn't sure how Eddie would react to that, and he didn't want to freak him out more, so he left his hand palm up on the tabletop next to Eddie’s hoping it was enough, leaving him a clear indicator that his comfort was there if he wanted it.
Eddie stayed in his trance for a few more minutes before a car drove past the restaurant, bouncing light through the window, causing Steve's ring to glint in his vision. That seemed to snap him out of it, Eddie all but throwing his hand into Steve's, gripping it tightly.
"Dan knows?" Eddie's voice shook with what sounded like disbelief. Steve, worrying he might burst into tears any second, started rubbing his thumb soothingly along Eddie’s knuckles.
Steve thought back to all the Daniel's he'd known in high school, couldn't think of a single one of them good enough for Eddie, and although King Steve wasn't good enough for Eddie either, at least he'd made the effort to become a better person.
A person who could maybe be good enough for someone like Eddie, with his resplendent smile and his inspirational laugh, his wondrous voice and wicked tongue. But clearly Dan hadn't bothered to grow, he'd stayed the same small town jumped-up dickhead that thought he was too good for the remarkable man in front of him.
More fool him!
Dan's loss and hopefully, if he played his cards right, Steve's gain.
Steve brought his other hand up to join the first, so he was cradling Eddie's hand in both of his, trying to be as comforting as he could from across the table, but then Eddie had started to laugh, deep and brilliant and merry, as though it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard.
"Oh, ho, ho! I wish I could've seen his face! I wonder if Jason took a picture? We could get it framed! OH! Album cover!" Eddie was practically vibrating in his seat, Chrissy joining in with his raucous laughter.
Steve looked at Robin, she looked equally baffled, oh good it's not just me!
As much as Steve wished he had a clue, it was nice to see how easily Chrissy matched Eddie's energy, bouncing up and down next to him, waving her arm frantically, "Oh, no, no, no! Stage backdrop!" she managed between peels of laughter, making Eddie laugh so hard he started banging the table with his free hand, desperately trying to catch his breath.
Chrissy looked across the booth, quickly catching his and Robin's confusion, sucking in a deep breath and jumping right into regaling them with stories of Eddie's early music career. Of Corroded Coffins' humble beginnings, practising in Jeff's garage and playing to disinterested patrons of their local bar. How they'd caught a break getting a regular gig in Indy, how they'd been discovered by a scout who just happened to be passing through. How they'd been on the edge of stardom, only for Eddie to have his dreams squashed with the promise of forever that never came to fruition, no matter how much Eddie conformed to Dan's every demand.
Steve listened in awe, Chrissy was an excellent storyteller and Eddie turned a beautiful shade of crimson whenever his best friend praised him, but Eddie's demeanour changed as the story became heartbreaking and all Steve could do was squeeze Eddie’s hand tighter; he knew what it was like to live with a dream squasher, someone who wanted to mould you into what they wanted you to be, instead of loving you for who you are. Not that he could understand how anyone would want to try to change Eddie, or how anyone could want to take anything away from him; or how anyone could see how happy his dreams made him and not want to do everything in their power to make them come true.
He could tell Robin was equally fascinated, but Vegas was clearly catching up with her, she was desperately trying to fight sleep, nodding off and shifting, staying awake for a few minutes to keep listening to Chris' stories but nodding off again. When Robin nearly face-planted her empty plate, Chrissy interrupted herself to suggest they head back to the hotel.
Not that Robin wanted to leave their company, she whined and protested, but quickly settled as soon as Eddie suggested they all meet up in the evening to go to a concert. Steve didn't quite catch the name of the artist, but from the way Robin bounced on the balls of her feet, he could tell she was excited about them. Steve didn't care if they were going to see the Queen of England's attempt at a comedy gig, Rick Astley repeat Never Gonna Give You Up for two hours straight or an elderly man give a talk about growing tomatoes, he was just happy to be spending more time with them.
It was hot out on The Strip, the sun high in the sky, bathing them in light and making Eddie look almost ethereal as he walked quietly by Steve's side. Eddie wasn't looking at him like he had been when they'd set off to the restaurant, he was glancing around at all the sights of Vegas, so Steve felt free to really look. Even looking at Eddie's profile knocked the breath out of Steve like a smack to the chest, he was just so beautiful, Steve felt more like he was looking at a piece of art than a human being.
Eddie’s hair wasn't just brown, in the sunlight Steve could see it was a mix of every colour, blondes and reds and browns all intermingled in his little ringlets. Neither were his eyes, they were speckled with gold and amber flecks that shone and sparkled as the light reflected from them. His pale skin was slowly turning pink in the midday heat, making a multitude of tiny scars on his face and neck shimmer. Steve wanted to kiss every one, he wanted to know the stories behind each mark, wanted to heal the past hurts with gentle caresses.
How could anyone ever want to hurt you?
With that thought, Steve's mind couldn't help but wander to Eddie and Dan's relationship, he just couldn't get over how endlessly unfair it was that Eddie had had to go through a relationship like that. Being in love with someone who didn't love you back was terrible enough, but being with someone willing to manipulate you into giving up your dreams, into becoming a whole other person out of desperation to be a good partner then to have the nerve to publicly blame you for the demise of the relationship, was just horrific.
Eddie didn't deserve that, he deserved someone willing to hang the moon and the stars for him.
And as much as a sick part of Steve understood the desire to want to keep Eddie all to himself, to keep his voice all for himself because when he thought back to the way Eddie had drawn him in without even making a true effort, Steve knew that if Eddie sang with intent the whole world would want a piece. But he supposed the difference was, he understood how selfish it would be to do that, to stand in Eddie's way of making his dreams come true, to not actively help him to actualize those dreams, to stop him from sharing his gifts with the world!
Eddie drew him out of his musings by bumping his shoulder into Steve's, a warm, playful smile on his face that Steve couldn't help but respond to, gesturing behind them with his eyes. Eddie seemed delighted when Steve snuck a glance over his shoulder at Chrissy and Robin; they were holding hands, Robin, getting more drowsy with every step they took in the intense heat, was practically being held up by Chrissy, not that it had any effect on the dopey smiles they were directing at each other.
"Adorable" Eddie mouthed when Steve's gaze flicked back to him, he couldn't help but agree, even if he did feel that little twinge of jealousy that the two of them could be so freely wrapped up in one another. Apart from when he was dating a girl, Steve never felt confident being openly affectionate in public, he always felt like it needed a big conversation about what the other person was comfortable with, and then he was accused of overthinking everything and making it weird.
He knew it was down to the way Billy had treated him and the thing was it made sense back in Hawkins but when they'd moved to Indy they lived in a safe part of town, he saw couples just being themselves all the time but the one time he accidentally grabbed Billy's hand during a thriller at the cinema, he'd acted like it was the end of the world, like Steve had doomed them somehow and when something so small causes your partner to temporarily move out it's bound to make you self-conscious.
Steve was glad when they arrived back at the hotel, he was fine in the sunshine, other than the time when he was fifteen and he'd fallen asleep in one of his sun loungers for eight or so hours, he never burned, but Eddie's cheeks already had a permanent pinkening and Robin may as well be a vampire she burned so easily, Chrissy had rosy cheeks now too, but he wasn't sure whether that was down to the sun or Robin's affection.
The lobby air conditioning had perked Robin up like a slap to the face, she was back to chattering easily with Eddie, telling elaborate stories of her marching band days, waving not only her own hands about but Chrissy's too where she hadn't realised she hadn't let go, not that Chris seemed to mind. Steve couldn't help but smile at them, they were too cute; even Vickie eventually became tired of Robin's rambling, she’d learned ways to discreetly quieten her, but Robin noticed, of course she did, it was the reason for the first time he'd ever seen Robin cry, but Chris just seemed enchanted, it made Steve's heart happy.
Steve was trying to keep track of their conversation, but his brain was blanking, now they were back in the midst of the hotel he was suddenly uneasy, every second that ticked by, every step they took was one closer to having to part, but they couldn’t linger, it was check-in time so reception was manic with pushing and shoving and people vying for attention. Steve was glad when the lift dinged so they could be away from the hubbub, the doors sliding open like a welcoming embrace.
Seeming to sense his change in mood, Eddie snuck his hand into the small of his back to guide him into the lift, immediately calming Steve; Robin noticed, falling silent halfway through her sentence to poke Steve hard in the ribs, smirking and mouthing, "adorable" at him.
Steve let out a breathy laugh and blushed deeply, melting further when the doors slid closed and Eddie snaked his arms around Steve's waist, propping his chin on Steve's shoulder. It warmed his heart to have him so close, to think that maybe he was equally anxious to be apart. Eddie snapping out of his contemplation by laughing heartily when Robin looked at the two of them with feigned disgust, but it didn't take long for her to turn into an adorably blushing mess as soon as Chrissy did the same thing to her.
With two floors separating them, the foursome found it incredibly difficult to part from one another, Chrissy wouldn’t let go of Robin’s hand and Steve was leaning against the doors forcing them to stay open for as long as possible while they checked and double-checked and triple-checked the arrangements for meeting up later in the evening. It was only when an elderly couple wanted to use the elevator that Steve reluctantly let it go, he and Robin staring forlornly at the closed doors for several moments before sighing heavily and turning to head to their room.
Robin headed straight to the bathroom for a shower, muttering under her breath about everything being wet. What could he say? They’d had fun! He knew she didn't really care about the state of the bathroom from the amount of times she'd showered with the door open in her apartment so they could continue their conversation, she was just filling the space to ease him.
Steve flopped down on his unmade bed, sucking in a relaxing breath, thinking about how brilliantly fucked up his life had become, and half listening to Robin's grumbling, letting it soothe him. Then when he felt brave enough, he put the phone on speaker and let the messages play.
Beep. "My Little Bobbin, you forgot to call! Give us a ring before your mother has an aneurysm! We love you!" Beep.
Steve could hear Robin creasing up in the bathroom, he felt guilty that he'd forgotten to remind her but her parents knew her too well, they’d only start to really worry if they didn't hear anything after a couple of days but they’d know from the fact that they could leave a message that they'd checked in and now she'd been reminded Robin would call them back when she was done in the shower.
Beep. "Steve, honey, Dustin’s driving me insane, will you please remember to bring him that book he wanted? I can't remember the name. Earthshaker! call him, will you? he misses you. Okay, love you, bye." Beep.
Beep. "Steven. Darrrling. Having fun in Vegas? Dad's got you a lawyer all set up, so don't worry! Call us back so we can start proceedings." Beep.
Beep. "Steve, it's Hop. *sigh* Is that Steve? No, he's not there. Call me, we love you." Beep.
Beep. "Steve, honey, we saw your announcement. I'm glad you're having fun but maybe give Hop a call? El says he's pacing! Don't forget my book! Dustin! Have fun with your husband! Send our love to Bobby, bye!" Beep.
If there were more messages Steve didn't hear them, between Robin chattering over the sound of the shower and listening to the messages from his family, Steve nodded off with a contented smile plastered to his face.

okay yes i know i have 800 wips i should be working on rn... HOWEVER i've had another plot bunny pop up and i'm subjecting all of you to it
so hear me out:
steve has an older half-sister from his mom's previous marriage (maybe divorced, maybe widowed, who cares not important rn). she's not that much older than him, but she left home for college and never looked back. she occasionally calls to check up on steve, especially around the time the upside down happens bc of everything in the news. they were never super close as kids, but they cared ab each other. she was the first person he called after starcourt, and she was also the first person (besides robin of course) that he came out to. she's always supported him no matter what.
they don't talk ab her very often tho. conversation usually stays on steve and how he's doing, how his friends are, what his life is like. he doesn't know much ab her life at the time, just that by the time fall of 1986 hits, she's graduated college and starting a career (what, i don't know. maybe teacher or literary publicist? something steve's dad wouldn't approve of)
and then things change. steve gets a call from his sister, and she asks if he can come visit for a while here in the next month or so. he asks questions. it takes her a bit to answer. finally, she rips off the bandage. she's pregnant. she doesn't think she's ready for a baby, but she still wants to be in their life. she knows steve loves kids, that he's always wanted to be a dad. she asks if he'll come up for the birth, and adopt her baby. she wants him to raise the kid, but she doesn't try to pressure him. she knows it's a big ask. she just wanted to offer. she says she'd feel better knowing they're in a good place, that they're loved. she knows he would be perfect.
steve is obviously shocked, and rightfully so. it came out of nowhere really. he hadn't known this whole time. he isn't sure what to say. his sister tells him to think on it. there's still a little bit of time before the due date. he agrees to at least come visit and be with her for the birth. he doesn't promise anything more than that. he isn't sure what he's going to do yet, just that he wants to be there to support her.
he talks to robin that night, sitting on the living room floor of the small house they rent. it isn't much, but it's home. he tells her everything his sister said. robin stays quiet the whole time. when he finishes, all she asks is, "what do you want to do?" steve doesn't know. he isn't sure he'd be ready to raise a child on his own. so robin offers to help.
they decide to coparent. they're both there when steve's niece is brought into the world, and they don't hesitate for even a second when signing the adoption papers and birth certificate. everyone lives happily ever after.
this is fully centered on platonic stobin, with maybe a dash of background steddie and buckingham bc i make my own rules. would potentially end up being a big blended family all living in one house and coparenting all of their children (yes more kids) together and everything works out.

Steve (and Robin because they cannot be apart) works at a Christmas Shop, it’s one of the only things that draws people into Hawkins because it’s massively, truly huge, and it’s committed to being a 365 day Christmas pit stop, the cafe that’s hidden in the depths of the store sells Christmas themed drinks all year round and Robin is pretty sure the shop has cut a deal with the electricity company because the fairy lights are on nearly 24/7, Steve has a green apron he has to wear and a hat with a bell that he will only wear when the owner, a sweet but cutthroat Claudia Henderson, is around and he actually really loves his job
the cafe is a hangout for anyone in town, kids pour in straight from school (including the owners son and all his friends), parents and babies come in for a much needed dose of caffeine, the older gossips of the town gather for lunch and this means Steve and Robin know pretty much everyone in town
that is until a new guy starts showing up, he’s got wild curly hair and is usually wrapped in a leather jacket with a denim vest thrown on top more often than not, Robin immediately clocks his crush and winds up to start the teasing until Steve reminds her that she laughed so hard at one of Chrissy’s jokes (she owns a bakery and provides treats for the store’s cafe) last time she was in that Robin snorted and then immediately walked away from the poor girl because she was so mortified
Robin snaps her mouth shut and just stalks off to leave him to check out the new guy (both figuratively and literally, the guy is buying the most heinous looking elf Christmas decoration)
Steve thinks it was probably a one off, just another cute guy coming through to check out the famous Christmas shop but he comes back a few weeks later, once again buying one of the ugliest decorations in the shop, flirting up a storm and leaving Steve with a wink and a cheeky grin, Robin does laugh this time because she actually managed a very normal conversation with Chrissy about music last time she was doing a cake and pastry drop off, Steve shrugs it off though but then this guy is back, asking Steve what Christmas drink he would recommend and hey when is his break because they could have a drink together and Steve is endeared by this man’s, Eddie apparently, cute dimples and he leaves Steve blushing but happy
Eddie comes back a few more times, each time buying up the most disgusting looking decorations and eventually Steve asks about it, Eddie flirts a little and tells Steve he needed an excuse to come back and see him and once Steve is sufficiently flustered Eddie sighs and tells him the truth, he’s back to look after his Uncle Wayne who had an accident at work and the two of them are both as stubborn as mules and they don’t usually get to arguing because they’re both big communication is key people but Eddie is worried and Wayne is irritable from being cooped up and they’ve been spatting more than they ever have but Wayne loves Christmas and this store so to make up with him Eddie comes here and buys the weirdest looking thing he can find and Wayne will always sigh and grumble but he loves them because they remind him of Eddie (Robin scoffed when she heard that because it’s so true) and then they make up until Eddie helicopters around him again and the cycle repeats
Steve listens to this with the biggest heart eyes ever and oh dear god is he in love with this weirdo already? but Steve is a sucker for people who just show their love and affection for others on their sleeves and Eddie seems exactly the type and now Steve’s personally taking him around the store and into the storage room to show Eddie his favourite ugly Christmas wreath that will match the decorations Eddie has been buying up

Snippet:
Robin woke up naked–which was not completely unusual but it was unusual for it to happen in a stranger’s bed in Hawkins, Indiana. She stretched out her arms and legs, the bed empty but still warm–clearly whoever she was had only just got up. What was her name? They’d had a lot to drink the night before and Robin was a bit fuzzy on the details other than that the woman was probably the most beautiful woman Robin had ever seen and her name was something with a “K” maybe. Kristine? Keri?
Robin sat up, her head swimming. Going out last night had been a mistake. She had to meet Steve and Eddie in– oh shit. Robin looked at the clock. It read 8:30 am. She had less than an hour to meet Steve and Eddie at her parents’ house and she had no idea how far away from it she was.
She started searching the room for her clothes. They had had some very enthusiastic sex the night before which had apparently involved her bra ending up on the other side of the room from her shirt. She was unfortunately not able to find her panties, so she was going to have to just put her jeans on sans underwear– yikes –and hope for the best. Maybe that was her punishment for being a horny idiot in her hometown at Christmas.
She pulled on her socks, hopping on one foot as she opened the bedroom door to see the woman from the night before running around her apartment in sweats and a tank top, clearly panic-cleaning.
“Oh good, there you are. I’m so sorry to do this and I swear I’m not usually like this but you have to go. Like, now,” the woman said, her strawberry blonde hair pulled up in a messy bun, blue  eyes wide in panic. She had hickeys all over her neck, courtesy of Robin.
“That’s totally fine, I actually am late to meet someone. Have you seen my jacket?” Robin asked, casting her eyes around the living room of the small apartment.
“Yes, here,” the woman said, thrusting Robin’s jacket, bag, and shoes into her hands and subtly pushing her towards the door of the apartment. “Again, so sorry but I have friends coming over in like, an hour, and this place is a mess and I’m a mess and I had a great time last night uh…”
“Robin,” Robin supplied.
“Right, of course. Robin. So fun, so great to meet you, great sex, thanks for the orgasms, et cetera,” the woman said as she opened the front door of her apartment, depositing Robin in the hallway.
“Right, uh–” Robin said, standing in the hallway, shocked at how efficiently she had been ushered out of this woman’s apartment.
“I hope you have a Merry Christmas!” the woman said, smiling brightly as she shut the door in Robin’s face. Robin heard the lock click as she stared at the wreath on the door.

you can keep your boots on baby (I'm a woman not a lady)
explicit | robin buckley / chrissy cunningham | read it on ao3
inspired by @riality-check's brilliant "save a horse, ride an ex-jock"
“Okay, Eddie,” Chrissy says, for probably the hundredth time that night, as she paces Eddie’s apartment. “So, you know the plan-”
“Chris,” he says, with a sigh, as he reaches out to grab her shoulders to stop the pacing. “I know the plan. And I’m telling you, if everything you’ve told me about this coworker of yours is correct you aren’t going to need a plan at all. You just need to show up and make a few flirty remarks and she is going to be putty in your hands.”
Chrissy nods, because as much as she hates when this happens, Eddie’s probably right. “Okay,” she says, with an exhale of breath. “You’re totally right. I’ve got this. It’s not like I don’t know how to flirt, right? I mean, hello, I’m Queen Chrissy. Right? It can’t be that much harder just because she’s a girl. Right Eddie?”
Eddie nods back, sagely, completely false bravado as Chrissy well knows. “You got it, doll!” he teases, his accent starting to slide back the more they talk, and claps her on the back a few times. “Now, how’s this?”
He steps back and turns to show off his outfit, and it’s definitely… country adjacent. For Eddie, it’s probably the best it’s going to be, with combat boots instead of cowboy and black jeans instead of light wash, and he’s torn the sleeves clean off his flannel.
“Very good,” Chrissy says with a nod. “If country-metal was a genre, you’d be at the very top.”
“That’s the worst thing you’ve ever said to me,” Eddie grumbles, as he gestures to her. “Now you.”

Part 3 of the Steddie Vegas AU!! Is it okay if this is a weekly thing? I know most of it is already written but it's finding time to edit it 😬 this summer is killing me istg
Part 1 --- Part 2
Steve awoke groggily sometime later to a sleep-rumpled Robin telling him they needed to get ready because they were being picked up in half an hour. Directing a confused frown at his best friend, Steve searched his mind for an answer, being picked up…?
It took a second for the past few hours to finally filter through but as soon as thoughts of Eddie flooded his mind, Steve's face slowly split into a sunny grin. He couldn't help it, no matter how much Robin scoffed and rolled her eyes, the butterflies taking flight in his stomach made him feel giddy.
He hadn't been this excited to see someone in a long time! Jumping up, he took his best outfit out of the wardrobe heading toward the bathroom to get changed and start taming his hair; kissing Robin playfully on the cheek and humming a merry tune as he practically skipped by her.
Robin tutted and rolled her eyes at him through the mirror above the desk, "Stop! God, you're gross when you're in love," she grumbled.
Steve laughed, "That's alright, so are you," he teased, pulling products out of his toiletries bag onto the side by the sink.
Robin scoffed, "I'm not in love!"
Steve's eyebrows jumped up sceptically, "No? That's not what you said at the cafe," he countered.
He heard more than saw her slam something on the desktop, "When did I say I was in love?" she squawked indignantly.
Steve's eyebrows furrowed at himself in the mirror as he thought back to that morning, "When me and Eddie arrived?"
She snapped the lid of something and snorted decisively, "I didn't say anything!"
"I know!" Steve agreed because she hadn't said anything, she didn't have to.
Robin sighed heavily, "How did I say it then?!" she retorted.
"With your eyes!" he shrieked, rolling his own in exasperation.
Robin huffed out a laugh, "Oh my god, Evie! You're such an idiot! Now shut the fuck up before I ruin my eyeliner!"
Steve did as he was told, pumping serum into his hands and smoothing it into his hair; running his own fingers over his scalp didn't have the same enjoyment now he knew what it was to have Eddie run his hands through his hair. He sighed wistfully, how do I miss him so much already?
Shaking his head to clear it in the hopes of not letting his thoughts run away with him, he rinsed his hands before poking his head around the doorway to check Robin was done with the pencil.
"So you don't like Chrissy then?" he asked curiously, leaning back into the mirror to check for stray eyebrows.
Robin let out a prolonged groan, "I never said that!"
Humming in understanding, he yanked out a hair with the tweezers, "You're just not in-love?" he clarified.
"Duh! I've known her a day!" she insisted, sighing heavily.
Steve chuckled, swapping the tweezers for a blob of moisturiser, "I've only known Eddie a day!" he argued, rubbing the cream gently into his skin.
She whined huffily, "Yeah but you're different! You're all…" Steve could practically hear her wafting her hands around.
He knew she didn't mean anything by it and he tried not to be offended but his voice came out all squawky anyway, "I'm all what?" he wanted to know, popping his head back around the doorframe.
Robin puffed out a frustrated breath, opening and closing her mouth a few times before settling on, "Romantic?"
Steve rolled his eyes, leaning back into the mirror checking for imperfections, "Why'd you say that like it's a bad thing?" he asked, his tone not as neutral as he'd like it to be.
"I didn't!" she argued with a sigh, "It's just… that's not me. I'm more…" she lamented, and whimpered, unable to find the words.
Steve flicked on the tap, washing the cream off his fingers, catching sight of his wedding ring and smiling softly to himself. Okay, maybe she has a point!
"Reserved?" Steve suggested the word having popped unbidden into his head.
"Exactly!" Robin agreed.
Steve smiled fondly to himself, a reserved Robin was nothing new, but neither was her denying the strength of her emotions. What was new was the way she was with Chrissy but maybe that wasn't as good as he'd first thought, "But you had a good time with her?" he checked.
Robin made a giddy little squealy sound in the back of her throat, "Oh my god, Steve! I had the best time! She's amazing! Did you know she's a three times cheer champion? And she won gold in the regional gymnastics championships! Do you know what that means?!"
He had no idea what that meant, Robin couldn't care less for sports, or medals, or winning things, "That she's incredibly flexible?" he guessed, only half joking, stepping away from the mirror to get changed.
Robin huffed exasperatedly, "No! I mean yes but not what I meant!" she grumbled.
Steve was halfway through changing into his jeans when he paused to think about it for a second, standing abruptly as it hit him, "Oh! Oh, you like a jock! Robin Bobbin Buckley! You like jocks!" he taunted jovially.
Robin tutted, "Shut up! You've married a dork!" she grouched.
He couldn't stop the little giggle crawling up his throat at the thought of being married, at some point it'd stopped being scary and just started feeling exciting.
"We already knew I was into dorks! This is brand-new information! Have you ever dated a jock before?" he wondered aloud, bending back down to finish pulling on his jeans. He knew none of the girls she'd dated while he'd been around had been but she'd never really mentioned a high school love life.
"No!" she whined, sounding unsure and a little upset.
"Aww Bobs, don't worry. If it helps we're very easy to please," he told her, trying his best to be reassuring, "Plus, I don't think you've got anything to worry about, she seems pretty obsessed with you!" he added absentmindedly as he pulled on his shirt, concentrating on doing up the buttons.
Robin let out a hopeful little whine, "You think?"
Steve stopped what he was doing to huff a gentle laugh, thinking about how Chrissy had barely been able to keep her eyes or hands off his best friend, the way Eddie had found it adorable; it seemed Chrissy's attraction was obvious to everyone but Robin, "Yeah, I do yeah," he assured her gently.
She hummed softly and then went quiet, deep in thought and smiling to herself as she ran a brush absentmindedly through her hair, pretending she wasn't when she caught Steve sneaking a glance around the doorframe.
Steve popped back into the bathroom before he ended up with a hairbrush launched at him, chuckling as he twirled a stray strand of hair around his finger, that particular one always had a mind of its own.
At least chatting with Robin had somewhat calmed the jitters he was feeling! Just the thought of Eddie on the other side of the door, looking all pretty and wanting Steve to get involved in something that was important to him was making him want to jump up and down, or dance a jig, or maybe both at once.
He'd never had that before, someone who'd wanted to include him in their recreational activities. Nancy had thought him too stupid to help her with her journalism and decided for him that he'd find the library too boring, without ever actually bothering to ask him. He was never invited to hang out with her friends or to join her study groups, he was pretty sure he was only there to bolster her social standing at school and to keep her folks off of her back.
He and Billy shared a love of basketball but other than school sports, he was never invited to do anything other than "dates" with him, which usually turned out just to be an excuse to hook up. But Steve was certain Eddie had known from the look on his face that he had no idea who they were going to see, Steve wasn't even sure whether they were going to see a singer or a band, but Eddie had still wanted him to come anyway, was on his way over to share this experience with him. Steve couldn't wait!
He was just doing a final mirror check when Robin asked, "You want eyeliner, Dingus?"
Steve wandered out of the bathroom, smoothing down the front of his shirt, smiling to himself when he saw Robin was wearing the dark plaid shirt that was now hers but had once upon a time belonged to him. "Do I need eyeliner?" he asked curiously, he was never sure whether it did anything for him.
Robin stared bug-eyed at him through the mirror, then whipped around to stare directly at him, "what the fuck are you wearing?" she squawked.
Steve looked down at his outfit and then back to Robin with a confused frown. He loved this shirt! El had chosen it for him the last time she and Hop came to visit, short-sleeved and paisley in colours that really complemented his complexion. Pairing it with his favourite pale blue jeans that hugged his arse perfectly was a no-brainer and he always wore his trusty Nike's, surely she knew that by now.
Robin tugged on her hair trying to dampen her frustration, "Holy crap! Evie! You absolutely cannot wear that tonight!" she yelled.
He knew she wasn't trying to hurt his feelings, she just had no filter when she was overstimulated, didn't make it sting any less though; on a normal outing, she wouldn't even bother to glance in his direction, she'd just tell him he looked hot (mainly, so they could make it out the door before Steve went back to his wardrobe to change, and the day was officially over) and off they'd go, but apparently not for one of the most important dates of Steve's life.
"I look fine!" he muttered indignantly, just for the sake of it because now he felt the need to be grumpy. He wanted Eddie to think he was pretty and he didn't bring anything else that made him feel as good as his SuperEl shirt did, or it had before Robin said that.
Robin rolled her eyes exasperatedly, "You're dressed like my dad!" she exclaimed, eyes going wide and immediately covering her mouth with both hands in shock. Clearly she hadn't meant to let that thought out!
Steve gasped involuntarily, and Robin immediately tried to backtrack, muffling an apology through the hands that were still clamped over her mouth.
There were only so many places to sulk off to when sharing a hotel room with your supposed best friend and honestly he really didn't want to hear it! Eddie would be here any second and now he felt like crap. He flopped face down on his bed determined to never move again, what was the point when your nicest outfit apparently means you're dressed like a pensioner.
Steve heard more than saw Robin turn back to the mirror, her hands landing heavily on the desktop, she sucked in a deep breath then jumped up, pacing in the small space; Steve could picture her wringing her hands as she moved around the room.
She was letting him mope because it was better to get it over with, that way he could change before the others arrived, which would be any second and she really thought it best for everyone involved if Eddie didn't see that monstrosity of a shirt just yet because he might be obsessed with Steve but the shirt was horrendous!
What Robin never seemed to realise was that she had this tendency to mutter her thoughts to herself aloud, especially when she was stressed. Steve rolled his eyes to himself and sighed, he thought Eddie would like the shirt, even if she didn't.
Robin sighed heavily, "You know I love you Steve, but you absolutely cannot go to this concert dressed like my dad!" And of course, Robin had to be shouting that just as there was a knock at the door! Steve groaned loudly and dragged himself up to answer it.
He couldn't just leave them standing in the hallway! Robin said he was a perpetual people pleaser, said it had something to do with being left too young, that he'd learned the best way to get his parent's attention or approval or whatever was to be well-behaved. He didn't know if that was true or if he just enjoyed making people happy. Right now he was just battling with wanting to see Eddie and maybe getting a hug and wanting the ground to open up and swallow him whole.
Steve hid himself behind the door as he opened it, only letting them see Robin, just while he gathered the last of his courage. Not that she gave him much of a chance to do that when she immediately screeched, "Eddie, tell him he can't go out like that!"
Eddie said nothing as the door slid shut behind him and Chrissy but it was obvious they were both trying their hardest not to laugh, at Steve or at their bickering Steve didn't know, but even though Eddie was physically biting his lip, his dimples were still poking through.
"Eds?" Steve whimpered pathetically.
And Eddie, sweet, wonderful Eddie, smiled his warmest smile, took Steve's hands into his own to stop him scrunching in on himself, and told him "You look beautiful, sweetheart!" humming and grinning in return when Steve preened. "Perhaps you could wear that when I take you out to dinner instead?" he suggested, cheekily waggling his eyebrows, making Steve feel all blushy and bashful.
He knew Eddie would like the shirt! Robin may be the brains of their pairing but her ideas of fashion left something to be desired.
Steve wanted to snark at Robin about it but that was when he noticed Eddie was wearing eyeliner! And at least three necklaces, a leather one with a pick dangling from it and two different chains. A black t-shirt with an indistinct pattern because the fabric had been slashed as though he'd had a fight with a wolf or a tiger. Black jeans that were so tight they might as well have been painted on with chains and studs and safety pins attached with Docs and a leather jacket.
Is it warm in here or is it me?
Eddie had his head tilted, surveying Steve from head to toe, contemplatively he said, "Maybe if we just... come with me," he urged, tugging on Steve's hands, pulling him out of the room, leaving the girls behind.
Eddie dragged him into a joyful skip to the end of the corridor, straight up the stairs, taking two at a time. Two floors wasn't far but it'd been a while since Steve had kept up with his fitness regime, so he was huffing and puffing. Coach would be so disappointed!
Eddie just grinned at him fondly, told him, "You do look beautiful, Sweetheart, if it were up to me, we'd cancel the concert and I'd take you to dinner instead, but we can wait, can't we?" he asked, with such sincerity in his voice, and not nearly out of breath enough for Steve's level of embarrassment.
All Steve could do was nod, he couldn't speak even if he wanted to, and he did, he wanted to tell Eddie that of course they could wait, that he didn't want Eddie to miss his concert, that he too looked incredible but Eddie was happily tugging him down a corridor, unlocking one of the many doors and shoving Steve straight into their room.
A feeling of awe swept over Steve as he skidded to a halt, standing shellshocked just inside the door, because Steve'd thought his and Robin's room was nice but Eddie and Chrissy had a suite and it was fucking gorgeous!
The door opened straight into a living space, a beautiful kitchenette with dark wood counters and a marble worktop, chocolate leather sofas and dark furniture and gold furnishings in front of floor-to-ceiling windows. And the view! Wow!
The Strip lights were vibrant even against the setting sun, even though it wouldn't be long before she tucked herself behind the mountains for the night, Steve had this absent thought appear in the back of his mind that he hoped he and Eddie would have time to stop and just sit and watch it set together before they had to head back to Indy. Eddie squeezed his hand, smiling so affectionately at him, as though maybe he was sharing the same hope, before gently drawing him through one of the open doors that led into a bedroom.
The bed was huge with neatly made golden-coloured sheets, the decor just as ornate as the main room had been. Not even the mass amount of clothing covering the expanse of the room could make it look any less magnificent, if anything, the touch of Eddie just made it all the more beguiling. Steve just sort've stood there in wonder, taking in the space and watching as Eddie rifled through the wardrobe, finally coming out with a hanger that held what was once a black t-shirt with an "ah ha!"
The shirt was at least two sizes too big for either of them and had had the sleeves completely removed all the way down to the waist. Steve couldn't even call it a vest because he wasn't sure there was enough fabric left to be classed as one, convinced one of Robin's camisoles (that he'd once used as a windscreen chamois and got yelled at for) would cover more, and although it wasn't his usual style he liked it.
He definitely liked it more than the unsure smile Eddie was now shooting him, Steve grinned his brightest grin as he reached a hand out for the garment, making sure to fully appreciate the way Eddie’s breath hitched before his smile grew until it nearly split his face in two. Steve was expecting Eddie to just pass him the top so he could get changed, what he wasn't expecting was Eddie pulling him into his arms, trapping the fabric between them, Eddie cupping his jaw, gently caressing his cheek with his thumb.
It was his turn for his breath to hitch, Steve had seen pretty eyes before, but none of them held a candle to Eddie's; rich coffee coloured, lightening towards the pupil like the growth rings of a tree and speckled with gem coloured glitter that shined like diamonds, so expressive and full of life, he wished he could spend the rest of forever looking into them.
As close as he was he could see the crinkles in the corner of his eyes as he smiled affectionately at Steve, then Eddie was glancing purposefully at his lips, practically begging Steve to lean in and who was Steve to refuse?
He let his eyes flutter shut as soon as Eddie’s plush lips touched his own, as they both sucked in a breath neither of them realised they'd been holding out on taking as they melted into one another.
Steve had never been handled so delicately as he was by Eddie, with gentle caresses and soft kisses; the girls he'd been with always expected him to be the one to treat them gently and the guys, well it was obvious they were after one thing and getting there the fastest way possible but Eddie kissed him like they had all the time in the world, like all he wanted to do was just be here in this moment with him and Steve couldn't get enough.
They were interrupted, far too quickly in his opinion, by their best friends, standing in the doorway to Eddie's bedroom with their arms folded and matching raised eyebrows to go with their "ahem!" Robin couldn't keep up the ruse though, laughing at the guilty look on his face, even as Eddie pressed his forehead to Steve's unwilling to separate, glaring daggers at Chris while she laughed along with Robin.
Steve kissed Eddie on the corner of his mouth, reluctantly stepping out of his grasp, shooing the three of them away with a promise to get changed. Eddie stepped away only to scuttle back over to kiss Steve tenderly on the cheek, Chrissy calling for him exasperatedly from the living space. Eddie chuckled, chasing after his best friend with a "I'm coming!" leaving Steve alone in Eddie's bedroom.
He took a minute just to centre himself, taking a deep breath to slow his beating heart, wondering how on earth they'd ever function when they had normal every day things to do like get to work on time.
Steve could hear Robin getting antsy about being late and quickly started on the buttons of his SuperEl shirt, throwing on Eddie's top and heading for the door; an anxious Robin was not something he wanted to induce by dawdling.
But just as Steve was about to leave the bedroom, he could hear Chrissy teasing Eddie, "I can't wait to tell Gare! Jeff's gonna lose his shit, they were already pissed that they couldn't come with us! When they find out you almost missed the concert of the century for a boy! Minds will be blown!"
Eddie muttered something in response that Steve couldn't hear but both girls gasped audiably.
"Really?" Robin asked softly, something really hopeful in her tone, and Steve wasn't sure if Eddie replied verbally but he could see him nodding and Robin grinning as he finally left the bedroom.
"How do I look?" Steve asked bashfully, fully getting to enjoy the way Eddie's eyes darkened as he spun around to face Steve.
"Wow!" Chrissy complimented.
"Evie!" Robin breathed.
"Um, uh, looks- it looks great! You look great, just needs a little..." Eddie mumbled, trying hard for nonchalance and missing by a mile. He swooped forward and started adjusting the safety pins at Steve's hips, he'd originally assumed they were an aesthetic thing but as the fabric tightened the whole top seemed to settle better. "Of course, you're skinnier than me!" Eddie grumbled as he fixed the shirt in place, stepping back to admire his work.
With the bottom of the fabric tight around his hips, it draped loosely off his shoulders, the excess swinging freely around the pockets of his jeans, the round neck showing off the v of his pecks, the straps just barely covering his nipples. It was sort've... freeing.
No one said anything for a few moments, the three of them just stood staring at Steve, it was really disconcerting and it didn't help that he couldn't really decipher the look on any of their faces. Robin was the easiest to work out, she just looked bemused like something was missing, she pulled that very same face when she was trying to write a shopping list. Chrissy looked kinda impressed, like the difference between the two tops was that surprising. And Eddie had the same abstracted look he'd had back in the waffle house, like he was in a world of his own.
"Eyeliner!" Robin blurted, snapping everyone's attention to her as she handed Eddie a black pencil.
Eddie blinked rapidly before taking it from her and stepping back into Steve's space, gently forcing his eyes closed with his fingertips. Applying the makeup with practised ease and rubbing his thumbs gingerly over the lines he'd created.
When Steve next opened his eyes, all three of them were full on, jaws dropped, gawping at him. A shiver ran up his spine, causing goosebumps to break out and all the little hairs on the back of his neck to stand up. It wasn't like Steve wasn't used to the attention, he was Prom King, he'd been hit on and chatted up and propositioned in every club he'd ever stepped foot in, hell he'd been called pretty for as long as he could remember, but the look in Eddie's eyes was so intense Steve felt almost pinned by his gaze.
"That's just not fair," Robin whispered to herself.
"We should go!" Chrissy decided, grabbing hold of Robin and Eddie and physically herding them out the front door.
Steve took a moment to just shake himself off, he wasn't an idiot he knew he was attractive but he'd never felt that before, although feeling new things just seemed to be a reoccurring theme since he'd met Eddie. Then he heard Chrissy call his name from the hallway, his legs kicking back into action leaving the suite and following her to the lift, catching a glimpse of himself in the mirror at the back and having to do a double take.
Because holy fuck! He looked hot! Like really Hot! Like HOT! And it wasn't like he was the only one, he took a look at the four of them in the mirror and holy shit! Together they looked incredible! They looked like something you'd see on the cover of a magazine, or like a band on a red carpet, or like the leads in that vampire movie with that handsome bloke from that show.
Eddie with his slashed band tee, his leather and chains, Chris in her little black dress and thigh-high boots, Robin head to toe in black with her trademark dark plaid, and him in a skimpy bit of black fabric, showing off muscles and moles and chest hair.
It wasn't a look any of them could get away with in Hawkins, they’d be branded Satanists before they ever had a chance to so much as smile, but Vegas was special and as the four of them stepped out of the elevator into the lobby, they just looked like they belonged, not just on The Strip but together.

It was only natural, that once Steve and Eddie started hanging out all the time, that they would include their best friends too. Especially after everything that happened over spring break.
Robin was a little intimidated at first, who wouldn’t be, it’s Chrissy Cunningham! Ex Head Cheerleader of Hawkins High. But she wanted to do this for her soulmate and his oblivious crush/ her other best friend. So when Eddie brought Chrissy to movie night, she swallowed down her nerves and tried her best not to be herself.
Of course that didn’t work.
“Hi! I’m Robin, but maybe you already knew that since we were always at school events together but you probably didn’t notice me because I was in the band and you’re Chrissy Cunningham and why would you have noticed me and you’re really pretty oh my god and I’m rambling now, sorry , I’m gonna stop now,” Robin looked sheepish and mentally scolded herself for not reeling it in. Now Chrissy was gonna get scared off and-
Chrissy was giggling?
“Hi Robin, no need to apologize,” she smiled as she moved passed Robin into the Harrington house as Eddie looked amused behind her.
“Hey Robs.” he kissed her cheek, “What was that about?”
“I tried not to be me and it backfired stupendously,” she sighed.
“You don’t have to not be you, you aren’t going to scare her off,”
“I just don’t wanna ruin this,”
“You won’t ruin anything, even if you two don’t get along it’s not the end of the world,” he squeezed her shoulder and followed Chrissy into the living room. Robin sighed and shut the door following them.
Chrissy was sitting on the couch looking a little uncomfortable, but Eddie sat down next to her and gave her a reassuring look and she seemed to relax a little. The door to the kitchen opened and revealed Steve wearing an apron.
“Hey guys! Glad you could make it!” he made his way into the room as Eddie jumped up to hug Steve.
“Hey Stevie, nice apron” he mumbled into Steve’s shoulder.
“Hey Eds,” Steve mumbled back. Robin thought they were sickly sweet. When they grew closer after everything that happened Robin felt nothing but joy. Eddie had fit perfectly into her and Steve’s dynamic. The missing puzzle piece they didn’t know was missing. Her joy grew more tremendous when she noticed Eddie’s handkerchief and they had a new thing to bond over.
They, reluctantly, parted and Steve turned to Chrissy.
“Stevie, Chrissy Cunningham. Chris, Steve Harrington,” Eddie introduced with a dramatic bow.
“I know Steve, Eddie,” Chrissy said fondly and got up to give him a hug.
Steve smiled and opened his arms.
“Hey Chris, it’s been awhile, huh?” she all but collapsed into his arms.
“Yeah,”
Robin stood slightly shocked, a quick glance to Eddie told her he felt the same.
“So, you guys were uh, close, in High School?” Robin asked hesitantly.
“My uh, sophomore year, Chrissy’s freshman, she went out for cheerleading and I was on basketball and we just kinda fell into the same social group,” Steve explained as they parted.
“But Steve here was different. Everyone else was being mean to be mean, he never did anything directly for as long as we were close. But we kinda parted ways after awhile,” Chrissy supplied.
Eddie and Robin both stared for a moment, taking in the new information when something clicked.
“Were … were you two …?” Robin gaped.
The two jocks both turned a bright shade of pink.
“Only for a couple weeks, we decided we were better off as friends!” Steve interjected.
“Completely mutual!” Chrissy added.
“How do you think she became known as the Queen of Hawkins High?”
“Steve,” Chrissy looked a little embarrassed and uncomfortable with the mention of that name. Steve noticed this and changed the subject.
“What movie did you bring anyway, Eds?”
Eddie cleared his throat, “Uh, I brought uh, Rocky Horror Picture Show,” he seemed to remember why they were there and had a change in demeanor, “this movie is going to change your lives!”
After gathering the snacks Steve had made and getting drinks, the teens sat down to watch the movie. Steve and Eddie took the couch, Steve sitting in his spot and Eddie laying across the remainder of the couch with us feet in Steve’s lap. Leaving Robin to her spot, stretched out on the love seat.
Chrissy is sitting on the love seat. This leaves Robin to quickly assess her choices, she could sit in one of the other two chairs in the room, but those were super uncomfortable and she would rather die, she could sit on the floor, but then she risks them wondering why she’s sitting on the floor when there are several open spots, she could make Eddie move his legs and sit on the couch with them, but they look so happy and Robin doesn’t want to bother them or offend Chrissy making her sit by herself while the other 3 are squished together on a separate couch.
So Robin makes a sacrifice, and sits down on the love seat squished next to a really, really pretty girl who happens to be one of her best friend’s best friends.
Chrissy seems to blush a little as Robin sits, and folds in on herself, trying to take up less room, which scares Robin. So in an act of no thinking, just acting, Robin grabs Chrissy’s legs and maneuvers her to sit almost mirror to how Eddie and Steve are sitting.
Chrissy gives her a curious look, blushes a little harder and then turns her attention to the movie.
Robin turns to look at the tv but can’t seem to focus, thinking about what she just did. Why did she just do that?! Was it too much? Does Chrissy think she’s weird now? Why does she care so much about what Chrissy thinks-
Oh.
Oh shit.
No no no no no! Robin can’t have a crush on Chrissy Cunningham. Christine Elizabeth Cunningham! The Queen of Hawkins High! She’s too high up on the food chain, too straight, too pretty, too …
Perfect.
Fuck.
The movie is amazing. Eddie gloats.
“I told you the movie would change your life,” he brags, now leaning into Steve’s chest instead of away.
“I have no idea what I just watched, but I will admit it was pretty good,” Steve added, running a hand through Eddie’s hair, who seemed to push into it like a cat.
“I’ve never seen anything like that before,” Chrissy admited.
“Well then you should come to more movie nights, we always find some weird movie to show each other,” Robin interjects.
Chrissy smiles, “I’d like that,” God, she can’t just smile like that. Robin would do anything to see that smile again and again.
“So,” Eddie says breaking the silence, “Who’s who?”
“Eddie your obviously Frank N Furter,” Robin supplies.
“Yeah you have the hair and everything,” adds Chrissy. He takes the comments in stride.
“I could totally pull off that corset and heels,” Steve turns bright red at the thought.
“ I uh think Chris would be Janet” Steve stammers.
“Me?” Chrissy looks surprised.
“Yeah, I see it. Innocent girl, not so innocent deep inside,” Eddie smirks as Chrissy goes pink.
“I’m not … innocent,” she mumbles.
“Steve is so obviously Brad,” Robin changes the subject.
“Mmm you’re right Robs, I can totally see it, we just need to get the glasses for him, or better yet, don’t …” Eddie implies.
“What about me?” Robin asks, trying to change the subject from Eddie’s not quite innuendo.
They all seem a little stumped.
“I think Columbia,” Chrissy supplies. Robin turns to look at her.
“I mean, her outfit is awesome and it looks like something you would wear,” she burns a little pink. Robin mirrors her blush from the compliment.
Eddie interrupts this blush off with a big yawn.
“Well this was fun, but I am exhausted from not having slept for 45 hours, so I think I shall retire for the night,” he announces and stands, heading for the stairs.
Steve stands too, moving to follow Eddie.
“Will you two be alright?”
“Yeah Stevie, go on. I’ll show Chris to the spare bedroom,” Robin tells him. Steve smiles greatfully and heads upstairs.
Now, awkwardly sitting almost uncomfortably close together, the two girls were alone.
“So um, how long have you and Steve been together?” Chrissy says suddenly.
Robin stares stunned for a minute. It’s not that she’s unused to the question. Everyone who knows her and Steve have asked them that question at some point, she just assumed Chrissy would have seen the way their best friends were looking at each other, obviously pining.
“Oh, no. We’re not … together. We are completely platonic. With a capital P,” she stutters.
“Oh, you two are so close, I just thought,” Chrissy looks away, a little embarrassed, “I mean, I guess I should’ve known but I didn’t want to get my hopes up for Eddie,”
Silence.
“What do you mean get your hopes up for Eddie?” does Chrissy know about Eddie?
Her eyes flash with panic, “He doesn’t have a crush on you I promise!”
“I know he doesn’t. Do you … know?”
“ About … Eddie?”
“Yeah,”
“Yeah, he told me, I mean I had my suspicions, you know how brutal the rumors in school were but I didn’t want to assume,”
“And you’re … okay with it?”
“Of course!” she seems a little offended, and then scared, “Are you?”
“Me? Of course I’m okay with it!”
There’s an awkward silence, before Robin makes a huge move.
“I don’t actually, um … like … boys,”
There’s a deafening silence.
“Oh,” Chrissy says, “Ohhh,”
Even more of a deafening silence.
“How did you um, know?”
That wasn’t quite what Robin was expecting.
“Well, everyone was always singing praises to Steve Harrington and Jason Carver, but I never saw anything. They were just guys. Nothing special. But there was this girl in my class, and I looked at her and I felt what those girls felt when they talked about boys,” Robin mumbles.
Chrissy takes a moment to take it all in.
“What if you felt that way about boys, but sometimes when you look at girls you feel that way too?” Chrissy doesn’t look at her.
Robin feels her heart speed up.
“That’s okay. It’s a thing. It’s called bisexuality. You can like boys and girls. Or other people. You aren’t confined to only liking one gender. It’s like David Bowie, or Freddie Mercury? They’re bisexual,”
“Really?” Chrissy’s eyes are really big, and once again, so, so pretty.
“Really,” Robin confirms. Chrissy glances down at Robin’s lips.
“Robin?” Chrissy asks meekly.
“Yeah?”
“I’m bisexual,”
“Thank you for telling me, that’s really big,” Robin almost whispers.
Chrissy looks at Robin’s lips again.
“I don’t want to assume, but um, would you want … do you want to um,”
Robin feels a surge of confidence.
“Chrissy?”
“Hm?”
“Can I kiss you?” she whispers.
“Yeah,”
Robin leans forward and presses her lips to Chrissy’s. It’s perfect, just like everything else about her. Her lips are soft and she smells so nice and then she’s opening her mouth to deepen the kiss and it’s like everything is where it’s meant to be.
They pull apart, but just barely, just enough to breath. Their foreheads pressed against one another.
“Robin?”
“Huh?”
“Do you want to be my girlfriend?”
Robins turns her face and buries her smile in Chrissy’s neck.
“Yeah, I’d like that,”
“Really?”
Robin moves back to look at Chrissy.
“Really,” and pulls Chrissy into another kiss. And another. And another. And another.
And if Steve and Eddie stumble downstairs in the morning with ruffled hair, hickeys and new revelations to find their best girls wrapped around each other, still on the couch? Well, then they moved extra quietly as not to disturb them.

no cuz imagine robin is house sitting for steve while he's away, she invites chrissy and eddie and nancy and jonathan over to keep herself company. it's jancy's date night (taking the kids to the arcade) so they bail, leaving eddie alone with two pining idiot dykes.
they smoke weed by the pool before they settle on a horror movie (i'm thinking some good ole steven king, children of the corn or carrie or something) and drink beers and wine coolers on the couch. eddie is three drinks and two joints in when the movie ends, and he calls it an early night. the girls aren't tired yet, so they put in another movie and light another joint. by the time they've finished their wine coolers, they've drifted closer on the couch. they start whispering to each other while the movie plays, tucking their feet up and slowly turning their knees toward each other.
this all ends when a jump scare gets them both, and they end up clinging to each other's arms. they look right at each other, locking eyes but not letting go. queue fast lean into slow kiss that dissolves into shamelessly making out on the harrington's couch.

After everything, not only did Robin make it out but so did Chrissy. They decide to go to college together with their best friends. They’re blurring the line of friendship to lovers.
Chrissy decides Robin is it for her even with everything else trying to work against her. Her parents, the past, the world. It’s love for her and she’ll be damn to let Robin go.
They’re in love and it’s everything for them.
(We’re going with Chrissy lives au btw. Don’t ask me how. I went with a simple way on this one lol. Anyone can use!)
send me a 🔀 and a pairing, and i’ll shuffle my playlist and make an au based on the first song that comes up
