Pile 1:

Erika is a spirited, determined, and independent village girl. She values honesty, loyalty, and the bonds of friendship. Erika is resourceful, quick-witted, and not afraid to take action when needed.

Pile 2:

Merliah is a brave, adventurous, and confident teenager. She has a passion for surfing and enjoys pushing her limits. Merliah is resourceful, quick-thinking, and always ready to take on challenges. She has a caring and compassionate nature, valuing her friendships and family bonds.

Merliah initially had no knowledge of her mermaid heritage. However, when she discovers her true identity, she embraces it fully. Through her journey to save her mother's ocean kingdom, Merliah learns the importance of courage, teamwork, and using her unique abilities for the greater good. She also realizes the significance of preserving and protecting the natural world.

Pile 3:

Princess Rosella is a kind-hearted, gentle, and nature-loving character. Growing up on a tropical island, she develops a deep connection with animals and the environment. Rosella possesses a beautiful singing voice and a genuine love for music. She is also determined, resilient, and willing to adapt to new situations.

Rosella's past involved being shipwrecked as a baby and raised by animal friends. When she is discovered and brought to the kingdom, she faces the challenges of adjusting to royal life and societal expectations. Throughout the movie, Rosella learns about the importance of being true to oneself, following her heart, and staying connected to her roots. She also realizes the power of love, friendship, and the impact of her actions on others.

Pile 4:

Eden Starling starts off as a selfish and self-centered character. As a famous singing diva, she is used to being in the spotlight and prioritizing her own desires. Eden is initially resistant to change and lacks compassion towards others.

Eden's past reveals her disregard for the feelings and well-being of those around her. However, through the visits of the Christmas spirits, she undergoes a transformative journey. Eden learns the value of kindness, empathy, and the true meaning of Christmas. She realizes that material possessions and personal ambitions do not bring lasting happiness, but rather the joy of giving, love, and caring for others.

Ald Character Intros Prt.2

Cazna Coborial: Aunerae’s first daughter and disciple of Tymora (which inevitably got her killed), she was raised to showcase her beauty and perfection, and before she was killed, she was close friends with members of the Gray Sword Syndicate.

Xarann Coborial: Wizard and Elderboy to House Coborial after Bemril’s death, he did everything for House Coborial, even convincing his elder brother to aid him in killing the Headmaster at Gloufmarth so he could earn the position.

Durdyn Coborial: He is the Secondboy to House Coborial, and was raised with Arachne as his mentor, and as such he had a soft disposition, and after receiving his sister’s farewell letter, he began to want to escape to see her, too. Also my baby.

K’yornl Akatha: Mate to Aunerae due to his status, he fathered all of her children save for Bemril and Cazna, and is loyal to his Matron Mother, enough to go after his own daughter.

Kethan: Father to Black and close friend to Cazna, Kethan is the leader of the streets of Abburth, as well as the Gray Sword Syndicate before his death, and of course this was with the aid of the warlock pact he had made long ago.

Black Brightblade: Son of Kethan, and product of his pact, Black was devoted to his father, swearing to do what his will demanded after his death even though he didn’t quite agree with it.

Amalica Caddath: The remaining daughter of the long-since destroyed House Caddath who had found refuge in the arms of Cell Maccis and their Goddess Eilistraee, Amalica is set up as Arachne’s love interest.

Ezili Ngozi: The daughter of a normal sea-faring family that has taken up a crew of her own because of her wit and charm and rumors surrounding her surviving a shipwreck when she was sixteen.

Merliah Cadiva: Renowned hero and scholar, Merliah is a powerful wizard known for her talent in the arcane, as well as her wisdom and kindness to those in need.

The Ser’Alun Six:

While these are still characters in ald, they are special, as they are the people that became some of Arachne’s closest friends and fellow governing bodies of Ser’Alun.

Erky Flittlewhisker: Gnomish apprentice to Merliah Cadiva, he is a gentle soul who wants the best for everyone, and would rather keep his nose in books than face the real world.

Leanora Celeste: A holy woman at heart, Leanora is a cleric of Paladine who holds her God in the highest regard, and is known for her intense loyalty to her friends, even when she seemed to have disappeared.

Karloff Saberhagen: Son of the once noble family of Saberhagen, he strives to take back his family’s name with good deeds of both chivalry and kindness.

Delara Gononda: Despite her intimidating nature, this tiefling actually has her morals, although constantly looked over by her affinity for setting things on fire.

McGinty Tosscobble: This halfling has seen several walks of life, from crime, to an honest living, to basically anything in between, but that doesn’t stop him from having a bit of fun with his friends and hard-earned money.

And of course, we have Arachne Coborial, who changed her name to Arachne Lyreflame.

Eris is the definitely best Barbie movie villain. She comes off as less intimidating and less clever than villains like Rowena or Rothbart, but she was the only one to completely reach her goal. She ruled Oceana ever since Merliah was a baby, managing to prevent any uprisings due to her being the only one thought to be capable of making merillia. In one more year, she could have gone through the Changing of the Tides ceremony and been able to get rid of Calissa, making her truly indispensable.

Nori/Merliah/Lumina/Isla Friendship Headcanons

I'm not going to try to figure out how they would meet. That would involve figuring out timelines it would take a lot of mental stretching to connect, so let's just take that part for granted for now.

I think Merliah and Nori would click the easiest right away. They seem to be around the same age, They're both competitive and somewhat sarcastic, and I can imagine their banter.

Although initial appearances might lead one to characterize Isla as naive, her distrust of humans gives me the impression she's jaded due to her past. Nori can relate to that, though maybe not for the same reason.

Lumina and Merliah could bond over their shared experiences being long lost princesses.

Isla and Merliah would spend time together in the outdoors. Isla’s endurance in Dolphin Magic was impressive, and I like to headcanon her as rather muscular/ having an athletic build.

Isla and Nori wouldn’t find many things they had in common at first. They are both slow to trust and open up to people. Maybe they could both talk about the optimistic blondes in their lives who pulled them into adventures that changed them.

They would all find comparing cultures interesting. The pearl magic connected to the royal family of Seagundia could be similar to/ a variant of Merillia magic.

Isla and Lumina could bond over having complicated feelings about people involved in their adventures.

Isla: Barbie and I are on good terms now, but it really hurt when she didn’t help me free my dolphin friends at first. She provided me with food and shelter and kept my secret for the most part, but I lost trust in her for a while. :(

Lumina: I know what you mean! My aunt Scylla- well I guess she isn’t really my aunt- she kidnapped me when I was a baby! But it’s okay because she was supposed to kill me, which would have been worse! She kept the secret of my true identity for 17 years, which I spent isolated with a seahorse as my only friend. I’m like super socially stunted now lol. Anyway, she then sort of agreed to poison my father?? But I know it’s because otherwise my uncle would tell everyone she killed me. And on the bright side, I got to go to the castle because of my journey to give her her invitation to the ball at which she was supposed to deliver said poison. I always wanted to go to the castle! I would have lived there my entire life if not for the plot she was involved in, but it’s whatever. Then some stuff happened at the ball, and I found out my true identity! I wasn’t mad; she had been through a lot that day. So I invited her to live with me and the parents she helped separate me from! :D

Isla: That’s... how... do you need a hug?

Although we don’t see much of how Isla lives, her lifestyle seems fairly simplistic and isolated. Compared to the other mers with complex societies, royal hierarchies, etc. she seems like she’s rugged (and perhaps uncivilized, though I doubt any of the others would make that assumption).

Lumina and Nori could also relate to one another feeling out of place among their royal loved ones. Nori definitely angsted around Nalu’s court, while Lumina felt more generally out of place. Nori could cover up her perceived inadequacies with snark, but Lumina struggled socially, depending more on being an eternally kind people-pleaser. That was really the only way she knew how to handle social situations, but being a princess meant she would often face situations requiring more complex responses.

I can imagine them discussing their monarchies:

Isla: I have no idea if we have a queen or anything actually. I just do my own thing.

Merliah: I’ve learned to balance my royal duties with my human responsibilities, but royal life is restrictive and frustrating sometimes.

Lumina: I agree with that, except the human part of course. I never knew being a princess involved so many rules!

Merliah: What about in Mermaidia, Nori? Does being a prince stress Nalu out?

Nori: I’m not exactly sure how much weight that title holds. He disappeared to help Elina on her first adventure, and they didn’t send out a search party or anything when he was kidnapped. He’s more like... a celebrity famous for doing nothing, but not famous enough for the public to actually protect him. Some people did look down upon our relationship because I don’t hold any special status.

Merliah: So he’s basically an influencer.

Nori, Isla, and Lumina: What?

1. What do you like the most about them?

This might sound a little ironic with her being a mermaid and all, but her fire. The girl is so full of passion and determination, it's amazing. She wants to be the best surfer, she wants to win every competition, she wants to save her kingdom, she wants to understand her past, etc. She's not just caught up in this journey, she's following her desires and making her choices, and she's determined to give her all for what matters to her.

3. OTP ship

Her and Kylie own my whole entire heart. They're my second favorite Barbie ship ever (first being Alexa and Liana) and there's not a thing about their relationship that I don't love.

4. NOTP ship

Everybody pop the party cannons because Merliah never gets an unnecessary bland male love interest in the movies, and so I don't have anything for this answer. Thank goodness.

5. Favorite friendship

Her chaotic lesbian trio with Hadley and Fallon means everything to me, and I wish we got to see more of them.

6. Would you date them?

I don't think so, even if I really like her, she's not exactly my type.

7. If you were them for a day what would you do?

I mean I'd be a mermaid so the answer is obvious. Day at sea, baby.

8. If you could change something about them what would it be?

I'd develop her backstory better in the first movie. The whole thing of her getting a pink strip in her hair for an hour and suddenly understanding the pains of being an outsider felt very awkward. I'd rather have it be estabilished that she's been kind of an outsider her whole life, you know?

9. What do you think they smell like?

Plain answer but she smells like the beach, like the smell of heat and sand and seawater and all that.

10. If you had the chance to ask them only one question what would it be?

How do you plan to keep up your double life once you actually have to be the queen of Oceana?

11. Do you think you have something in common with them?

I'm also a very headstrong, determined, and competitive girl, so we have that.

12. Have you ever wanted to slap them?

Noo why would I?

13. What would you do if they kissed you?

I'd be a little confused but I wouldn't have an issue with it.

OH barbie/winx is so big brained why didn't i think of that

i feel like trying to compare barbie characters to the winx will be.. easy for some and hard for others? like,, a lot of barbie main characters could be likened to bloom! annika and merliah from a story perspective, rapunzel, elina.. and that's just a few. i mean i feel like that's mainly because of the whole. main character thing so naturally there will be a lot of similarities. i think i would have to factor in personality in order to narrow down the choices.

for stella.. hm.. that's actually kind of tough... i'd kind of want to keep it to main characters just to make it easier? but not a lot of main barbie characters have similar personalities to stella. i'd almost say tori but i feel like that's cutting it too close to "stella is a spoiled brat" territory? maybe courtney from princess and the rockstar but i kind of want to do erika for musa so.. i'll have to think about this!

for flora.. any of the shy nature babies could work! i'm thinking maybe ro, barbie from starlight adventure, or even mariposa? though mariposa is a bit more. direct than flora is.. definitely a little shy but not quite as bad as flora. ro is more awkward than shy i think? but to be fair i haven't watched island princess in a Hot Minute so i might be remembering her wrong.

for musa, i'd definitely do one of the musical barbie movies. so erika from either p&p, barbie from barbie diaries, maybe even alexa from diamond castle. if i did erika from princess and the pauper that leaves courtney from rockstar open? (i just don't want to use the same movie twice adjghaljgd)

for aisha.. there are plenty of dance focused barbie movies and quite a few watery ones but they don't overlap. ik i said ro for flora but i think she could work for aisha too? actually, brooklyn from the recent one reminded me a lot of aisha! there aren't a lot of scenes with brooklyn alone though so.. maybe not. i think.. annika could work? they have relatively similar personalities and there's definitely a dance comparison too. but i really like the idea of annika for bloom just because of the whole big sister similarities.. Ough I Am Thinking

tecna might be the hardest? i'd definitely want to make some technology connections but that means keeping it within the modern movies. and not a lot of barbie characters in general have similar personalities to tecna. i feel like i might have to focus more on specific details rather than her entire vibe? spy squad and starlight adventure Could work but the characters don't really remind me of tecna...... oh man i'm definitely gonna have to think about this one

Well they also used the “lost princess” angle 7 times and no one ever complains about that.

Nutcracker - Clara was secretly the Sugarplum Princess the whole time, making her the "lost" legendary princess

Rapunzel - Rapunzel was the lost daughter of King Wilhelm. She was kidnapped as a baby.

Magic of Pegasus - Brietta is Annika's long lost sister, meaning she's also the long lost princess of their kingdom

Island Princess - Ro is the lost princess of Paladia. She washed ashore of a deserted island as a kid and was missing for 10 years.

Mermaid Tale - Merliah is the lost princess of Oceana. No one even knew she existed since Calissa kept her a secret from everyone.

Princess Charm School - Blair is the lost princess of Gardania. She was presumed dead as a baby along with her parents but actually survived her assassination attempt

Pearl Princess - Lumina is the lost princess of Seagundia. Like Blair, she was presumed dead as a baby but turns out she survived the assassination attempt.

I’ve mentioned before that the mermaid transformation seems to be far more than just swapping out legs for a tail, but today I want to try to do a deep dive (no pun intended) into what such a transformation might actually mean. This is mostly just questions I ask myself and I’m trying to find answers for, since I don’t have nearly as many answers as I would like at this point. But I like making these speculation posts, so here we go.

The first question I have is actually about being a half-mermaid. The information that Hadley looks up says that mermaids come of age “around” 16, so... does that mean it’s not an exact birthday thing? Granted, this is a human website that may not be 100% correct by any means (as Fallon points out), but given that the movie never contradicts any of this information, I assume it’s more or less accurate. It’s never mentioned that it’s Merliah’s birthday, not even in the second movie--it’s Merliah’s anniversary, not birthday. So I have to wonder, if it’s not a Magical 16th Birthday thing, what exactly would trigger such a change in her? My going assumption is that it’s actually the first time she touches the ocean after her 16th birthday that does it. We at least know that her hair getting wet made the pink streaks appear, so that’s probably what it is. I’m not sure how long after her birthday this would be, or even if it’s logical for her to have not touched the ocean since her birthday (given that she’s both a surfer and actually lives on the beach), but it’s what I have.

The second question is what does Zuma mean when she says that Merliah’s mermaid half has “resurfaced”? At what point did it... leave? Merliah didn’t have pink hair as a baby, so is she talking about the waterbreathing? Merliah came up from under the water with Calissa as a baby, so apparently, she could breathe water as a baby--which makes sense biologically for a hybrid, otherwise she could have drowned when she was born. But then Merliah rediscovers this ability, obviously, but I have to wonder... did she ever really lose it? Kids are taught to hold their breath underwater as children, and Break would have no reason to teach Merliah otherwise... So I wonder a lot about whether it is an ability that actually faded, or if it’s something she just didn’t know she could do. And why would that ability fade? Would it have faded if she had stayed in the water and hadn’t moved to land? Do babies just not have enough magic to sustain it? And if that is not what Zuma meant... what other physiological changes happened to Merliah?

The third question is actually the main point of this post: What, exactly happens when one is transformed from a human to a mermaid (and vice versa)? Like, physiologically, biologically, what all changes? It makes sense that more than just the legs/tail would change, bc... There’s a lot going on there. There are leg bones and muscles and veins, the pelvis and genitals, the skin and scales... and that’s just what we can logically assume. We have no idea what mermaids look like inside, if they have different organs, if they’re at all similar to us anatomically. They’re apparently biologically compatible, given that Merliah exists, but that doesn’t say anything about their actual anatomy. So when everything on the outside changes--the hair, the skin, the legs/tail--I wonder a lot about what, exactly, is going on inside. It certainly seems like an entire bodyswap between species, unlike say a fairy that just... has wings on their back. (Altho the point about their internal anatomy possibly being radically different still stands. But that’s another post.)

The fourth question is whether, given all of the implications that, if it would be ill-advised to transform before the 16th birthday. Does the age actually have meaning, or is it just tradition? For humans at least, 16 is an age where a person might have hit their full adult height--not always, late growth spurts can happen--but it’s a possibility. Does a person need to be their full adult height? Does it matter? Are the two forms they have linked, and are they ‘updated’ between transformations? If a child switches back and forth, will it affect their growth (in either form) at all? The transformation certainly doesn’t seem dangerous (this is Barbie, after all), but looking at it critically really lends itself to it not being something to take super lightly. Obviously, this doesn’t mean much for Merliah, but I have mermaid and mermaid hybrid ocs to think about.

And speaking of, the fifth question I have is about pregnancy. If one is pregnant... can they transform back and forth? Should they? Is there any kind of mechanism in the magic to prevent such a change, if it would be dangerous? With the anatomical differences that may be present, and it being essentially a brain swap between two bodies... I have to wonder what would happen. I imagine it would be difficult to test in-universe, unless the person in question didn’t want to be pregnant anyway, so it didn’t matter to them. Since the transformation is powered by the magic in the talisman, if it did have a failsafe of any kind... taking it off would probably do the trick. But if it didn’t, that would also be interesting. No way to really know for sure, tho, at least in canon. (Personally, I’m deciding that yes, talismans do have a failsafe, and that taking it off will revert you to your original form no matter what, bc that makes the most sense to me.)

The sixth question is whether mermaid transformation talisman must be a necklace. I have to imagine it doesn’t matter, as much it being something that the person can wear between forms. I don’t think there’s any inherent power in a necklace as opposed to, say, a ring or a bracelet. Like, an anklet probably wouldn’t work, just bc... in one of the forms, there would be no ankles... but some mermaids do appear to wear tail jewelry, so... maybe it would? Whether it has to be jewelry at all is also something I wonder. Like, could it be a shirt? Does the material matter at all, or is it simply about wearability? I like it being jewelry, if only for the hashtag aesthetic, but I have to wonder what limitations--if any--there are on the magic, and whether anyone has decided to test out different things before, bc I certainly want to know.

The seventh and final question goes back to my second, but I wonder a lot whether a mermaid turned human retains their waterbreathing. We know that Merliah can breathe water in human form, obviously, but is this a hybrid exclusive trait? If, say, Calissa turned human... Could she? Why or why not? I’m inclined to say that she still could, only bc I think of waterbreathing as the easiest and simplest part of the mermaid transformation, bc in Fairytopia they have plants that can grant you the ability, no talisman required. (Altho how long the effects of those plants last is also something I’m highly interested in, but that’s another post.) But it would also make sense if she couldn’t, if the transformation truly alters you physically as much as I think it might--but again, no way to know for sure, I kind of just have to decide on an answer one way or the other, bc either could be right.

Anyway, I kind of talked myself in circles, but there’s always a lot to unpack about these things. This isn’t even everything I’ve got but I’m tired so I’m just gonna call it here lol. The point is, I’ve given these mermaids a lot of thought and I still don’t have solid answers, and in a way that’s great! The barbieverse is something that feels like it keeps on giving, even without new content, bc there’s just a lot to go back and analyze in the past movies. I hope I never stop having fun with it (even if I will sometimes also stress about not have an answer for everything).

Ahhhh!!!!! Okay, y’all ready for this??? XD

Favorite Barbie film? Wait, I have to choose one of my babies??? Well 12 Dancing Princesses was my favorite growing up. Princess and the Pauper will always have a special place in my heart of course. I think Mermaid Tale is definitely up there, it’s really good, plus I just love mermaids! XD But recently my favorite is either Dolphin Magic or Rock n’ Royals, I keep rewatching them as comfort movies :)

Favorite heroine/main character? More decisions?? I have anxiety, I can’t decide on things! XD But hm... I think surprisingly Alexa from Barbie and the Secret Door? I love so many of the Barbie characters but Alexa is just so relatable as an introvert who would rather just stay inside and read/write instead of dealing with being social! XD

Favorite Barbie film song? I mean, “To Be a Princess” (both from the original and from Princess and the Popstar) is always a classic--I mean, hell, all the songs from Princess and the Pauper are GOLD. “Life Is a Fairytale” from Fashion Fairytale is catchy as hell and will absolutely get stuck in my head for hours! “Gotta Get to Camp” and pretty much any song from Rock n’ Royals will always get me up and moving. Oh, and “What’s Gonna Happen” from Secret Door is probably why that movie is so high up on my list!

Favorite Barbie film dance scene? Anything from 12 Dancing Princesses but I love the fun camp aesthetic of “Got to Get to Camp”, gives me some very Camp Rock vibes which I love! :)

Favorite Barbie couple? I mean, to be fair I don’t think most of my ships are canon... ^^; Probably the closest thing I have is Ken and Barbie from the Dreamhouse Adventures series but technically they’re not a couple yet... Doesn’t mean I can’t dream! They just made Ken so damn adorable and likable--that man ain’t afraid to rock bright pink clothes and I RESPECT that! Plus he’s Barbie’s best friend first and they’re building up their relationship as solid bff’s before romance kinda starts happening which I am SOFT for. But in Dolphin Magic Barbie and Isla are clearly girlfriends by the end, so I’m down for a triad with all three of them :)

Favorite Barbie dress/outfit? ANY of the outfits from Swan Lake--regular gown and then the swan tutu, I DREAMED of having both of those outfits growing up! The peacock dress from Island Princess is a super close followup, though!

Favorite Barbie film male secondary/side character? Ken from Dreamhouse Adventures, that boy has ALL my love! He’s also pretty great in Life in the Dreamhouse but I’m sorry, Dreamhouse Adventures made me fall in love with that boy <3

Favorite Barbie female secondary/side character? Isla from Dolphin Magic, Erika from Rock n’ Royals (c’mon, she is CLEARLY queer af, have you seen her amazing hair?!!!), and Skipper from Dreamhouse Adventures.

Favorite Barbie film villain? Oh man... I mean. Preminger from Princess and the Popstar is fantastic--other villains WISH they could be as over dramatic and unashamedly villainous as him XD And Duchess Rowena from Twelve Dancing Princesses rivals Mother Gothel, she is just so wonderfully HATEABLE, and she was straight up POISONING the king and she tried to frame his daughters, she is so EVIL and I LOVE her for that!

Favorite Barbie film animal sidekick? Unfortunately I’m not really a fan of the animals in the Barbie movies--sticking fake eyelashes and makeup on every animal just isn’t my thing :/ But probably Wolfie. I love that cat, especially because “The Cat’s Meow” is totally a trans coded song, I stan one trans cat king <3

Favorite Barbie film non dance scene? Ahhhh!!!! So many good choices!!! I think any scene where a character gets to meet a family member they were separated from (Merlia and Ro getting to meet their moms, Annika meeting her sister, Brietta) is a really good scene :) Oh! Also Blair straight up trashing gentrification in Princess Charm School, like Barbie WENT THERE and was not having it with capitalist bullshit!)

Favorite Barbie film quote? “If what you are is a strange you doesn't mean you should change you, only means you should change your point of view.”

Favorite Barbie film friendship? Barbie and Isla! :) But also Barbie and her sisters in Dreamhouse Adventures and in Life in the Dreamhouse.

Do you have any Barbie film ships? I will almost always ship Barbie with her female counterpart and that’s just a fact XD But I think we covered most of this in favorite couples :) OH! But I almost forgot! Frigging Mr. and Mrs. Roberts in Dreamhouse Adventures are GOALS. Like seriously probably the healthiest representation of a married couple I’ve seen in anything--and they’re not perfect, they’re super quirky and they have issues, but they still LOVE each other and COMMUNICATE and genuinely care about their kids and UGH, I could go ON for HOURS if I’m not stopped XD

Saddest Barbie film scene? Dang, I’m blanking on sad scenes but probably when Liana and Alex briefly break up in Diamond Castle. (C’mon, guys. We ALL know they’re totally a couple. They didn’t even try to hide it.)

Most romantic Barbie film scene? Isla and Barbie reuniting :) But I actually really love the dancing scene with Derek and Genevieve in Twelve Dancing Princesses where they have to dance together to get out of the secret world! Oh! And (spoilers alert for anyone who hasn’t watched Princess Adventure yet!) when Ken asks Barbie to dance with him at the end--wasn’t the confession I was hoping for, but still cute!

Funniest Barbie film scene? Anytime Preminger screams is gold XD

Favorite Barbie film blooper? My favorites are TOTALLY from Princess and the Pauper :) Poor Serafina watching the dummy cat getting absolutely trashed and being terrified for her life? Julian busting a move in the middle of “To Be a Princess”? AMAZING.

Favorite Barbie film world? Ahhhh!!!! They’re all so good!!! But any of them with canon mermaids is a world I’d be happy to visit XD

Favorite name? Anneliese, Merliah, Odette

Favorite parents/guardians? Definitely Mr. and Mrs. Roberts from Dreamhouse Adventures :) But Break from Mermaid Tale is totally awesome too, I’d love to have him as a grandfather!

Meet Koa Iokua Naihe ; He claims he is the King of Dad jokes.

He was born in Maui, Hawaii and is the the fourth born out of seven children with the majority of them being boys. Koa was born to native Hawaiian surfer Merliah Pelekai and Samoan-Hawaiian arms dealer Iosfea Naihe. The Naihe family were raised in Samoa.

It didn’t take Koa long to learn his way around a rifle thanks to his old man and learn the Naihe business. Not only were they in arms dealing, but would provide new numbers and such for stolen cars.

When he became old enough Koa would pull jobs with his dad and brothers. As they got older, they got more dangerous but Iosfea obviously didn’t care -- all that man began to care about was the money and not the lives of his children. Koa came to see that not long after he had turned 17 when his youngest brother (9) was killed.

After burying his baby brother Koa knew what he had to do. He went forth to HPD to turn his father in and oh man, it was so hard to Koa. He looked up to his father and it just broke him. The police planted a wire on Koa if him and his brothers were granted freedom from the things they’ve done due to their father. When they agreed, he went for it and by the end of the month? Iosfea was thrown away into prison and locked up for his crimes, and the Naihe brothers? They viewed Koa as a traitor and a coward.

Seeing he has become a complete outcast due to his actions in saving the family, Koa left and moved to Hawaii. The one other place in the world he always felt at HOME.

Once arriving to the island Koa was completely lost. He didn’t know where to begin in having a normal life though luckily for him a friend of his mother’s offered him a shelter in her family’s home. There he began to slowly get into the habit of a NORMAL life. The man of the house, Duke Lukela, was a firefighter while his wife, the woman who welcomed Koa into the family was an officer for the Wildlife.

Koa finally was going to be living the life seventeen year old’s live and oh how he thrived. Just like he did in Samoa, Koa too began to ride and tame the waves of Hawaii and entered several competitions. He never really did care to win them of course if he did, they were a bonus, but he just wanted to be one with the water. As a child his mother would joke and claim he is part from mermaid or maybe even an Atlantean, which that tickled him to death since he was a fan of the legends.

Thanks to the Lukela family Koa graduated high school and eventually went onto college -- something he never thought would happen to him. He had gotten into the University of Hawaii and decided to pursue a career in Marine Biology. Koa just couldn’t stay out of the water and was a total nerd in biology, so why not go after a career that benefits both?

Half way through his education and Koa found himself craving the adrenaline he felt when he pulled them jobs off when he was younger. Not knowing really what to do Koa kept quiet about this urge and began to become disgusted with himself for wanting that life. Though soon it began to grow more and it wasn’t before too long you would find Koa on the streets late at night and becoming involved in illegal street races.

Just like surfing Koa became good at racing, too good in fact that some of those he had beaten believed he cheated. From all of this put Koa up on a high horse and filled with arrogance in him. Soon it all came crashing down on him. One night after defeating someone who had family in high places and Koa found himself coming home to the Lukela family SLAUGHTERED due to his actions.

Feeling with regret and even more disgusted with himself for what he has done, Koa decided to drop out of college and go dark. He gave into himself completely that craved the danger and decided to go back to what he was born to do: arms dealing.

Using the money he inherited from the Lukela family, Koa bought himself a piece of land away from the city and turned a warehouse into his business. His first action? Koa made a proposition with the Hawaiian crime family dubbed as, ‘The Company’ and through him he was able to get his revenge on the Lukela family. Koa sold them the best of the best and allow him to come on one mission with them and that was to kill the man who marked the family for DEATH.

With his revenge satisfied, Koa decided to officially become an arms dealer, but not just to the The Company. To all other gangs on the island and became a neutral ground for them. Many soon began to call his business the Continental due to it’s neutral grounds. Due to his increasing business and a strong bond with just about every head of the gangs, they’ve looked to Koa as a brother and pledged that no harm would come to him and would defend him if need be from another gang. The only gang Koa ever refused to sale his weapons too was the Yakuza. They were the ones who had the Lukela family blood on their hands.

Fast forward a few years and business is booming for Koa. He became a small millionaire, but when you look at him he didn’t scream it nor screamed his business being illegal. When he wasn’t working, Koa would be out in about surfing, helping out in charities, and even volunteering at Mr. Lukela’s fire station. He had to do something to keep the memory of his adoptive family alive and he did through his actions.

At the age of twenty five Koa gotten married to a local woman who captured his heart, she wasn’t Hawaiian like him. Many called her a haloe due to not being neither Hawaiian or Polynesian, but Koa didn’t care. That next year (2008) she gave him a little girl and it took everything in him to not name her Lilo due to his love of that movie and settled LEILANI NAIHE. That little girl has had Koa wrapped around her fingers since the day she was born.

Not long after Leilani’s fourth birthday is when Koa’s marriage fell apart. His wife fell down a dark path and began to become addictive to drugs. He tried to help her and put her into rehab programs, but they never stuck. Koa finally put his foot down though when she gotten into a nasty car accident with Leilani who was in the backseat. Just seeing his daughter almost looking lifeless on that hospital bed changed him. Koa went into his wife’s hospital room with a look that screamed rage, and told her that when she is out of the hospital she is to LEAVE -- to pack her bags and leave.

About a week later his wife was released from the hospital with an order saying she has to go to rehab and Koa put protection on Leilani so his wife wouldn’t go around her. Koa took his wife back to their little family home to where she would pack and slowly began to reminisce, especially after Koa told her that he wanted a divorce. Though one thing lead to another and one final time Koa slept with his wife. How could he not? This was a woman he had been with for almost five years.

Though him sleeping with her came back and bit him on the ass if that is how you want to see it. Four months later with their papers being already signed and the marriage done, she came out of rehab after finishing it and revealed she was pregnant and that Koa was the father.

Still having a soft spot for his ex wife, Koa allowed her to live in the Naihe home but she had her own room and Leilani was thrilled to have her mother back home. It was no secret to Koa though when his ex wife wanted to try their relationship again, but he couldn’t. The image of the way their daughter looked never did leave his mind. It was something that would haunt him forever.

He wouldn’t admit it, but things were going smoothly in the Naihe household as her pregnancy went further along. They decided to be surprised at what the baby’s gender will be, as long as the baby is healthy.

One night though when Koa was out in about doing business is when he got a call he would never forget. Leilani called Koa crying and said Mommy fell asleep after taking some medicine and she couldn’t wake her up. Ending his sale early and promising he would make it up to them Koa fled back home to find the pregnant woman on the kitchen floor with a pool of blood seeping out between her legs. Koa became quickly worried, but that isn’t what fueled his rage, oh no, it came when he saw a needle beside her. She was cooking meth.

Acting quick Koa called the ambulances and when arriving to the hospital they performed emergency c-section on his ex-wife. While waiting for the results from the doctor, Koa kept telling Leilani she did everything right as she continued to cry in his arms -- saying its all her fault and that she couldn’t wake up her mom. She even blamed herself for the car wreck and learning all of this broke Koa even more. No child should go through this.

After soothing Leilani to sleep is when the Doctors came and revealed that both the baby and his ex-wife made it out of the surgery but Koa came to quickly learn something else, she had been using for months and it had resulted in their SON being born with a heart defect and will have to spend his time in the NICU. He then named his son, KAIKO NAIHE, who later on will go by Kai. Koa couldn’t pass up the opportunity to give him a name that starts with a K.

Upon learning this and endangering their son, Koa called the authorities on her and became arrested when she woke up. He then got a judge not long after to have all custody signed over to him and when he did, he officially cut his ex-wife out and ordered protection against him and his kids against her. He hadn’t heard from her since then and he wanted to keep it that way. Koa made a promise to both of his kids when they were born and that was to protect them, to make sure they do not go through a heartache he went through as a kid and he plans on sticking to that.

Not long after that is when Koa decided to move out of Hawaii for a bit and away from all the troubles from his ex-wife. Just because she cannot come around them, didn’t stop her family from nagging Koa and trying to pressure him into seeing the kids and drop the charges.

And so, Koa decided was advised to move to Chicago where there are three mafias there. He knew he would have to stay neutral and mainly this time because of Leilani and Kaiko. Pulling his resources together, Koa decided to build a family orientated place and so the drive in theater was built that he named, ATLANTIS - IN.

When Koa moved to the mainland he made sure his children never forgot where they came from and taught them their culture. Hell, whenever he could he would fly back with them to Hawaii.

A few years has now passed and Koa is now 38 with Leilani being 12 and Kaiko being 7. His illegal sales are still under the table with not many knowing about it, he planned on keeping it that way for the sake of his kids. Those in the city mainly known him as the owner of the drive in and a generous man who loves his kids more than anything. He is their number one fan. Koa still volunteers as a firefight, but not as much as he did in back on the island and still helped out in charities. He even a few times ran during the Boston Marathon. He even teaches surfing to some of the ‘pale faces’ on Lake Michigan. It was no ocean, but it still had killer waves to surf on according to Koa.

Personality;; Koa is an all around great guy with a gentle soul. He always mainly seen with a smile on his face and is the definition of selfless. If someone needed help he would give the shirt off his back for them and like I said earlier, he always is there for his kids and has a great relationship with both of them and his employees at the drive in. Despite his bright personality, he does have a dark side to him and that comes with a nasty temper. It isn’t easy for him to forgive someone and if you hurt his kids? Let’s just say you don’t wanna.

Wanted Connections;; Friends, best friends, drinking buddies, employees, maybe a few fwbs ;), someone his kids call aunt or uncle bc how close Koa is with them, even a few people who know about his illegal sales in being an arms dealer.

Fun Facts;;

Koa owns a warehouse on the same road of his drive - in is on, but are not attached to each other. He refuses to do business on the grounds of the family orientated place. Luckily for him, he owns the whole road that they both reside on and has bought all the land around it to keep it that way.

He speaks several languages -- English, Hawaiian, Samoan, Maori, Spanish, and a little bit Italian. He will tell you knows Russian, but only the curse words.

His daughter, Leilani, is currently playing soccer and Koa can always be found on the sidelines cheering her on. Same goes for his son, Kaiko, who is currently enrolled in karate lessons.

Each Naihe owns a pet of their own. Koa owns a Siberian husky named Maui while Leilani owns a bearded dragon named Kaili (and a cat named Stitch) and Kaiko owns a snake named Tama.
