Fun Fact
BuzzFeed published a report claiming that Tumblr was utilized as a distribution channel for Russian agents to influence American voting habits during the 2016 presidential election in Feb 2018.
It's OK to have different opinions about your Autism than the mainstream ASD community
It's OK to feel like you were benefited from your experience in ABA.
It's OK to prefer the term "nonverbal" over "nonspeaking" for yourself.
It's OK to prefer puzzle pieces. I know I do.
It's OK to prefer "person with Autism" instead of "Autistic person".
It's OK to be different.
Now, what isn't ok is forcing others to conform to your preferences. If you feel the infinity symbol for Autism is better than puzzle pieces, you shouldn't be unkind to Autistic people who prefer the puzzle piece. And vice versa.
This only applies to other members of the Autism community. People who don't have Autism should listen to those on the Spectrum, not what they as Allistic people personally believe is right.
Stop the fighting. Stop generalizing "all Autistic people do/prefer/like [insert thing here]". It's a Spectrum.
And that's OK.
the day the “autism moms” of the internet stop posting their autistic kid’s meltdowns with the caption “the bad side of autism 😔” is the day i can finally rest
Note to adult allistics, when an autistic person/child asks you “why?” after you tell them to do something, or when you tell them a rule,
THEY AREN’T TRYING TO BE RUDE.
We just want to know why we’re going to be doing something, or looking for a general explanation of what you told us. Saying “because I told you so” is illogical and confusing to us, it just doesn’t make sense! Stop getting mad at us for genuinely asking “why?” we’re not INSULTING you, we just need a reason as to why you told us to do something.
Why are neurotypical able bodied parents so obsessed with a 'hero' fantasy. No, you aren't a hero for caring for a disabled or neurodivergent child. You aren't special.
Parents are supposed to take care of their children, that's literally their whole job as a parent. So taking care of a disabled or neurodivergent child is no different, even if they need more care (or care in different areas).
I get that sometimes taking care of children with different needs is hard, with the ableism in our society and the fact that getting funding, disability aids, etc is very hard. But that still doesn't make a parent of a disabled / neurodivergent child a hero, it just makes them a parent, because parents take care of their kids, it's their job as a parent.
