Songs stuck in my head (2023 Q3)

（＾ω＾）the music we got for Spring/Summer 2023 audiodrama season has been amazing

相思续续入梦来/"Thoughts and memories entering my dreams" by 远皓ZIL

[三嫁咸鱼/Thrice Married to Salted Fish , Season 1]

The music and lyrics of this song perfectly balances the blend of humor and heart in this story. The verse starts off kind of cheeky, but the emotions mount as we build towards the chorus. That line about Lin Qingyu donning his wedding robes again -- a scene that made me weep while reading the novel -- is like a punch to the gut. Thankfully the song and the story ends on a happy note.

山月随舟/"The world that follows" by 大C

[残疾战神嫁我为妾后/After the Disabled God of War Became My Concubine]

This is supposed to be about a maimed war hero biding his time to take revenge on the unscrupulous enemy prince he is forced to marry, but thankfully the real story is better represented by this sweet ballad. Despite the trials and chaos of the main characters' circumstances, they find a kindred spirit in each other and a promise to build a peaceful life together after the war is over.

真情错给/ "True love given in error" by 匀子, 漆柚

[泾渭无间/Clear and Muddy Loss of Love, Season 1]

This heartbreaking duet is attempting the impossible: to capture the emotional devastation of this epic novel in just a few minutes. "Love/ falls into a drop of tear, there is no one to blame, but me who has given my true love in error." A heartfelt love has crumbled into the cruelest betrayal, but instead of anger, there is just sadness, longing, and helplessness.

随月/"Follow the moon" by 海疼er

[游龙随月/You Long Sui Yue (both seasons) ]

I love this song so much that every time I hear it I instantly forgive the parts of the audiodrama that I enjoyed less. The lyrics tell a story of meeting and getting to know someone with whom you can share the rest of your journeys and your life. It sounds like a theme song for a wuxia drama, the song that should be playing while they ride off onto their next adventure together.

直到黎明/"Until Dawn" by 文森

[诟病/Morbid Attachment]

I'm still torn between feeling like this song is a bit too raw and under-produced, or breathtakingly intimate with its focus on the main vocals. It's written for a lost lover whose name is hidden in the lyrics and melody, a lover who doesn't know or believe in this, even though a part of him desperately wants to. This song is filled with the regret and yearning that comes out of such a relationship, vulnerable but hopeful.

心眼 (主役版) /"Eye of the mind" (cast version) by 陈张太康, 文森

[心眼/Eye of the Mind, Season 2]

This duet featuring two of my favorite voice actors is basically fulfilling one of my CV fandom dreams. Their voices work so well together! The calm, modern sound of the song perfectly sets the mood for the journeys of (relatively) ordinary people who manage to have some incredible drama.

Just started listening to a radiodrama version of the count of monte cristo and i think its so funny how dantes is like "villefort loves me! he promised he would help me if ever got in trouble!" meanwhile the note villefort left about him in the prison registry is like "edmont dantes is a horrible dangerous FREAK. do NOT let him speak to anyone and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD keep an eye on him or he will kill you"

#i only know about this story through the musical which was fine but lacking a little something #and someone told me the book would make me wanna chew drywall which sounds promiaing but i dont have the attention for that rn ngl #just the first part of the audio book is like 7 and a half hours long #so two and a half hour long audiodrama it is #some personal shit #the count of monte cristo

I feel like the queer community is sleeping on podcasts and audiodramas in general. If you want an lgbtq+ messy retelling of Greek myths with a bisexual female MC who is an unapologetic simp for Artemis (honestly same) check out the Echobox podcast. Also Artemis is a lesbian in the retelling so it's looking like a slowburn. Fair warning though it takes two weeks to update.

To start off with (and because I'm just too excited to not talk about this) we have a piece of score composed by the unbelievably talented Grimrite Showrunner Cai Gwilym Prtichard (who also produces sound art under the name Dinas) and Grimrite have been slowly planning and working on a score during the script writing stage.

Inspired by the process that went into the Akira score we have created a few pieces of score before any other work has been done on the episodes, I feel that generating the mood first can really change the course of the way certain scenes are put together.

To settle on a consistent mood (besides just going from the scripts of course) I created a playlist of the kind of vibe we wanted, as well as just talking about it in discord calls (usually late at night)

We tried a variety of methods, from just talking vibes to graphical notation created by me and then interpreted by Grimrite

Grimrite definitely has a specific style and a really interesting part of the (ongoing) process is developing a common understanding when we talk about music, coming at sound/music from different angles and meeting in the middle has been a really interesting process. Grimrite finds balance to be very important sonically and has a certain set of sonic textures they work super well in. And so channelling that into the way both I and Chain of Being works has also been another part of the creative process.

I think that there is a shared passion for sound between the two of us that makes this collaboration super rewarding, like we genuinley both love sound and music so much and we really hope it comes through in the score.

Fun trivia fact:

Episode 6 of Brokenheartedpod, Goodbye Alyx was inspired by the song "El último trago" by José Alfredo Jimenez. Which talks about acepting the end of a relationship, and having one last drink before moving on.

As with any old song it has been covered by countless artists but my favorite interpretation is the one of lesbian icon Chavela Vargas:

audio fandom hours: the 君有疾否/Jun You Ji Fou audiodrama, and the OST

The Jun You Ji Fou AD turned a novel I almost dropped into one of my all-time favorites. This is the work that got me to appreciate audiodrama as a medium.

I need a separate post to talk about how much I love the lead voice actors in this production. Su Shiyu and Chu Mingyun's contrasting personalities are among the most memorable parts of the novel, and their voice actors, 陈张太康/Chen Zhang Taikang and 马正阳/Ma Zhengyang, helped them come alive in the AD.

The audiodrama's greatest weaknesses come from the plot problems it has inherited from the original novel. The production studio stuck close to the text of the novel, and did their best to leverage tools of the AD medium to make the material work. Music and pacing, particularly, played an important role in helping key moments from the novel feel more natural and impactful.

However, the JYJF AD is perhaps most famous for its music. The producers composed dozens of OST tailored for this drama, and the results are so worth it. I still remember just stopping in the middle of my task the first time I heard 万蝶振翅/"Ten Thousand Butterflies Spread Their Wings" in Episode 8, set to the scene where Su Shiyu realizes he is in love. When I read the novel, Su Shiyu falling in love with his enemy seemed cliched, but with the music I can sort of empathize with the intensity and beauty of the love he feels.

(Mr. Li's cover of 万蝶振翅/"Ten Thousand Butterflies Spread Their Wings." This song went viral on Douyin in last winter.)

The song is not free on Mao'er, but there are piano and guzheng covers on Youtube. I think Mr. Li's piano cover feels closer to the vibes of the original track, but Shiyu is playing guzheng in this very scene, so the sound of strings are very special to this moment. I love other songs from this drama as well, but 万蝶振翅 is always going to be special.

Objectively speaking, I can't say this is one of the best danmei audiodrama out there, but I do think it's one of the better ones and definitely still one of my favorites.
