#asymmetrical warfare lore
kindlingkeen · 29 days
Note
um, hi. you can totally ignore me if i'm being too presumptuous. but i love asymmetrical warfare but i also dont like 'and they all live happily ever after' stories that force jason to compromise his beliefs just to have a family again. if it's not too spoilery, i just wanted to know if that's your end goal for jason in the series. (i just dont wanna get too invested if that's the case huhu)
Hi, anon. I think some authors might get tetchy at a question like this, but I don't mind. I've definitely gotten invested in more than one story/series and after seeing how things ended, I wished I'd stopped part of the way through. Hard to be an avid reader and not have this experience. It's just a reality of fanfic that you're going to run into characterizations and plotlines you don't agree with because authors are free to interpret the characters however they want.
When I started writing Asymmetrical Warfare, I gave very little thought to how things would end. I was, and continue to be, much more interested in the story along the way. My goal for Jason is for his character to evolve authentically over the course of the series and for him to make choices that reflect his morals, his beliefs, his wants, and his needs. One of the key decisions I made to differentiate the story from canon's Under the Hood is the timeline. I'm not sure exactly how long the events are supposed to take in the comics (weeks to months?), but Asymmetrical Warfare takes place roughly over a year, so much longer. The idea being to 1) give me a huge sandbox to play in and lots of room for storytelling, and 2) to give Jason and the Bats (and now apparently the Ghosts, too, plus all the OCs from Cime Alley we haven't even gotten to know yet 😳) time to evolve.
As to which direction that evolution takes him ...
Tumblr media
But I can guarantee that I'm not investing all this time and energy into telling a story that does a 180 at the very end and tramples all over Jason's autonomy in the process. Whatever happens in the stunning conclusion, I think you'll be able to see Jason headed in that direction well before we get there. I hope you stay with me for the ride, but you can always stop reading if you don't like the way the story is unfolding.

Season 2, Episode 3 Liveblog
Teaser:
YES WE HAVE A DRAWL I REPEAT WE HAVE A DRAWL 🚨🚨🚨🪲🤠🚨🚨🚨
FANCY RED COAT RAND is here to steal your wine
My jaw DROPPED at Mat’s glow-up 😍🤩😘 I cannot WAIT for this man to be forcibly extracted from his bathrobe
Loved the Arches & ceremony, some word-for-word quotes there.
First real big surprise is Natti as Wisdom- I would not have thought she had the social standing for that, but otoh possibly the other options died? And it actually seems kind of plausible that she could even be taught to channel if you consider book canon (given Bode and Eldrin), though I don’t think that’s required.
Ooooooh ok I see why they picked Natti- they needed someone to twist the emotional knife in real good 🙃 Also you can see where Mat gets his moral core from, here- there’s a job and someone has to do it. But the jobs no one else wants/can do tend to SUCK, no wonder he tries to avoid them.
(Book Mat gets his values from his dad, but I think there’s probably a lot he got from Natti that he feels on an unconscious level/doesn’t talk about because it’s not at the level of talking, it’s at the level of doing. Relatedly, I keep thinking about a theory I heard that book Natti was a functional alcoholic; someone said that how early book Mat responds to sickness & interpersonal conflict reminds them of adult kids of alcoholics.)
I’m looking forward to the last ring >:)
HUH
I wonder if she had to gentle/kill Lan in there?
Still Peak Nyneave, honestly
OH MAN FAKEOUT YESSSSSSSSS we are getting the canon test!?
Incidentally I like that branded water jug
Where is Suroth getting her lip color? I like it
Oh that’s creepy, incredible horror movie move with the pointing
YES WE HAVE A DRAWL I REPEAT WE HAVE A DRAWL 🚨🚨🚨🪲🤠🚨🚨
The Voice sounds like the South Carolinan delegate (main villain) in the women & minority genders version of 1776 I saw recently. Incidentally, RJ lived in South Carolina.
Female soldier, check
Asymmetric haircut, check
Oh Uno, you are a good man
WOW … but actually that was exactly as dehumanizing and brutal as I would expect
May the last embrace of the mother welcome you home, Uno.
Perrin is gonna do a murder- oh I guess not
Lol Logain has Rand pegged
Hahaha the other fakeout is paying off now too (Logain looking at Mat and Rand in Tar Valon)
Oooh more book quotes!
Miss “I know everything” Selene
The Queen of Cairhein?!?
Glow-up! Glow-up!
Oooooof :(
Liandrin respected someone?
Mat is gonna have SUCH a complex after this, but otoh he’s probably heard worse from his mom
Mat wants to matter T_T
PEAK EGWENE
FANCY RED COAT RAND is here to steal your wine
I love Rand setting the letters on fire
Oooooooh class warfare, Rand is so offended
Wow, Rand is wasting no time
I love Rand being taught by Logain actually
Oh that is a DEEP CUT into WoT lore (pun intended), we know from Origins of the Wheel of Time that RJ was originally intending ‘gentling’ to involve actual castration
Rand are you sure you want to say that?
Oh interesting, does everyone hear LTT? Or just voices?
YAY reunion??? Oh, Mat. :(
Yeah Mat is scared out of his mind
Time for an interview with Ishmael! This reminds me of Mat’s first POV in book 3 actually, at least superficially, but it’s more like the dream meetings
Well done wolves!
So many cages and traps in this ep :D
Ooooof that betrayal’s gonna hurt later
Ooooh maybe we do not want to piss off Selene?
Oh good job setting the Foregate on fire, hero (inn fires 4 lyfe)
Ooooooh yeah Egwene would try to bring Nyneave back
Elayne, a rule follower? Well, when it comes to thinking she knows best, she would be a rule enforcer.
Nyneavelet is very cute
My jaw DROPPED at Mat’s glow-up 😍🤩😘 I cannot WAIT for this man to be forcibly extracted from his bathrobe
Awwww Mat can pay off all his debts in Nyneave’s fantasy world 😭
Ah I see Nyneave’s fantasy world is real enough that it involves visits from the main plot conflict 🧐
“What’s that” is Mommy’s rage-triggered ticket home, sweetie
Oooooooof.

These are low poly game models. As usual, tumblr massacres the resolution. Full res shots can be seen here: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/nQEQzX This was mostly inspired by the marines of Doom 3 (2004) and Quake 4 (2005). Sculpted in 3D coat, retopologized and refined in modo. Decided to do only busts because I'm terrible and 3D hands. Originally I was only going to have one character, but I added a head and shoulder pad variant so it wouldn't look so lonely. The black and red, and black and gold variants were just for fun.
I would love to do a variety of factions/PMCs with their own look and aesthetic, but this takes a LOT of time.
Lore: Cerberus is a Private Military Corporation. "Hellraiser" is just a slang for their operators, but describes the hell they unleash. Their services demand top dollar and having to deal with huge collateral damage is expected. They're big proponents of asymmetrical warfare. While their"defensive engagements" lack in finesse, this P.M.C can boast that no V.I.P/protectee has EVER been harmed under their care.

Hi! In Asymmetrical Warfare, is Ra's al Ghul actively pursuing Jason? Even in Gotham / Bruce's territory?
Great question, anon!!! Bruce wouldn’t be too happy about Ra’s mucking about in his territory, would he? Jason in Chapter 2 of Survival Instincts certainly seems to be holding Ra’s responsible for something. Hard to say what exactly, tho. At least at this point. 😉
The topic of the LoA is going to crop up again soon in Incident Review, a one-shot follow up to Survival Instincts from the bats POV, which I’m planning to post at the end of April. It’s possible a definitive answer to your question will be found there.
Or maybe just more questions… 😈
Thanks so much for the ask, anon! I love hearing yall’s questions and theories on Asymmetrical Warfare! 🩵

more OCs from Crime Alley yay!! I just love Park Row. I wish it became a community for Jason in canon, so he doesnt have to rely on just the Batfam as his support system. before the Outlaws he didnt even have a team, and his canon friendships are few and underexplored. so more Crime Alley peeps is always welcome!!
Sometimes I have this experience where I get an ask or a comment, and I’m like, how did you know that?!?!?! And then I remember I impulsively let details of my plans slip somewhere, the internet is not just a black box I can shout into, and y’all pay attention to the things I say. 🤭
Yes, OCs from Crime Alley, I think we’ll meet some for the first time in the upcoming Territorial Disputes (I promise it does exist, it’s just being difficult, the OCs being one of the reasons why).
I’m glad you’re excited. Thanks for the ask, anon! 🩵

Are the snippets of conversations between Jason and Talia in AW actual behind-the-scenes? (And how is their dynamic different from the one they have in your Choices series?)
The endnotes are meant to reflect snippets of actual exchanges between Jason and Talia. But there’s sort of an inherent blurriness to the format, almost like expanded universe content. They also don’t always line up contemporaneously with the chapters (for example the endnote to Chapter 3 of Survival Instincts took place long, long before that story).
I’m not really ready to comment more on Talia & Jason’s dynamic in Asymmetrical Warfare, beyond what the content and feel of the endnotes convey at this point. There will be actual content with Talia at some point in the future.
What I will say is, once upon a time in a kingdom far far away, an author started writing a fanfic and quickly realized they were actually writing two different stories. So they pulled them apart, and let the stories diverge. And the rest, as they say, is history. 😉
In a way, the AW ‘verse is an AU of my Choices ‘verse (if you’re read The People We Choose, the divergence point is probably pretty obvious). That said, the more I wrote and developed each storyline, the more they diverged and developed independently. So the early chapters of TPWC are not Jason’s AW backstory exactly, and Talia & Jason’s relationship is not the same across the two ‘verses, but there’s overlap.
Cryptic enough for you?
Thanks so much for the ask, anon! 🩵

Hi Keen! I'm curious, will you be completing The Calm Inside the Storm first, or are you proceeding with Territorial Disputes after Chapter 2? And where does TCItS fall in the timeline again? Before Red Hood shows up?
Hey, anon! Thanks for your ask!! 🩵
Gosh, I wish I knew. 😵‍💫🥺 It’s been my intention to work on Territorial Disputes “next” ever since I finished Guerrilla Tactics, but I’m really struggling with my muse on that one. For a while I wasn’t writing at all, and then I decided to let myself get distracted with Harm Reduction… Then I decided to add on to TCItS, but I thought it was just going to be one more chapter so I didn’t really plan for continuing beyond that. It’s all gotten really messy and complicated (*tears at hair and wails a little*).
My best guess right now for the order I’ll finish things is: Incident Review > Chapter 3 TCItS > Territorial Disputes > Chpt 5 Harm Reduction > The Storm > Chpt 6 Harm Reduction
Here’s a rough timeline of the stories I’m actively working on for Asymmetrical Warfare. Keep in mind anything not posted yet is still subject to major revisions:

🍬 + 🔪 + the beetle one for the 50 words for your WIP *wink*
For this ask game
🍬 ⇢ post an unpopular opinion about a popular fandom character
Jason doesn’t have autopsy scars. There was no autopsy.
🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?
Class action lawsuits.
🪲 ⇢ add 50 words to your current wip and share the paragraph here
LOL, I laughed so hard at this. Touché. Alright, friend, here you go. This is super rough mind you.

Dick shifts irritably in his chair, steeling himself to make another go at circumventing the hospital’s firewall. If he could just see the survivor’s full medical record, maybe he can understand—
The monitor he’s working on flickers and then a command window pops up in the foreground.
O: It’s past your bedtime boy wonder.
Dick grins, the knots in his shoulder easing slightly.
N: Like a gift from on high, she appears. Just the demi-goddess I’m in need of a blessing from. O: That’s a lot of flattery, even for you wing N: But it’s working right? O: Chow mein from the Garden and you’ve got yourself a deal N: Saturday night, it’s a date O: So, Mercy’s firewall giving you problems?  N: Yeah, trying to get into the records for a Brian Hess from 5 months ago
The screen flickers again, a cascade of windows opening. Lines of code rapidly fill the terminal. Dick relaxes back in his chair, content to watch Oracle work.

Thanks for the ask, anon, and the kick in the butt! Back to writing! 💙

Hello!! o/ I was curious about your opinions on the whole Jason Todd is immortal idea, this post lays it out pretty well & kinda mentions him using it to his advantage:
https://www.tumblr.com/forestlingincorporated/672020812528779264/so-jason-todd-might-be-immortal
If in your asymmetrical warfare series he was immortal in this way (dies but comes back) would that change anything? Would he use that ability at all?
Thank you :D
Hello!! I’m very normal about this ask. 👀
Friend, I think about this all the time. Like this is my #1 go to I-can’t-sleep-let-me-ponder-the-nature-of-Jason-Todd’s-existence thought wormhole.
‘Cause here’s the thing. Batman 💯 killed Jason at the end of Under the Hood. This, right here, is undeniably, unquestionably, arterial spray.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He would have bled out in minutes from a severed carotid. This kind of blood loss is not a survivable.
Tumblr media
And then ofc there’s the whole…
Tumblr media
Argue in the comments with me if you want, but I will die (bloody from hypovolemic shock) on this hill. Bruce killed Jason with that Batarang.
But, clearly, Jay comes back. Somehow. Those purple space sparkles at the end of Under the Hood sure look a lot like the purple space sparkles that bring Jay back initially.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then there’s that beautiful bit of narrative text that goes along with Jay’s initial resurrection:
“The strange truth of this anomaly, this wave that set so many bits of time on a different path did not change history … but set it right.”
Tumblr media
To me, this says that there is a right way for Jason Todd to die, and Superboy Prime’s ripple in time isn’t going to stand for it going down any other way. Ethiopia was the wrong way. À la Batarang wasn’t right either. So, immortal? I don’t know. But there are definitely conditions in place surronding his exit from this plane of existence.
But how does that ripple fix Jason’s death, exactly? After Under the Hood, does Jay wake up buried in the rubble sometime later? Or has Jason’s initial resurrection become fixed in time—a nexus point, if you will, that keeps pulling Jay back in. Now that’s fun to daydream about. 👀
I agree with the Tumblr post you cited that it seems like DC was building toward something with Jason in that era, and then just dropped it. And it seems pretty in character for how Jason was being written post Infinite Crisis, that if he thought he couldn’t die, he would use that to his advantage.
So, those are my thoughts in a nutshell surrounding the possible immortality of Jason Todd.
If in your asymmetrical warfare series he was immortal in this way (dies but comes back) would that change anything? Would he use that ability at all?
Right now, AW Jason is on a path to reclaiming pieces of himself—to building something for himself outside of Batman and the Joker—things that canonical Jason didn’t have or do. I think all of that would make AW Jason less cavalier about dying, less willing to chance it, than what DC was implying for a post Infinite Crisis Jason.
It certainly hasn’t occurred to AW Jason that he could be immortal. If something were to change that, depending on the nature of those circumstances, well … I guess we’ll have to see.
Thanks for the fantastic ask, friend. Hope you enjoyed my ramblings. The implications of all of this in Asymmetrical Warfare are going to be buzzing around the back of my brain for some time to come. 🩵

hello ~ about your series asymmetrical warfare will there be a bruce-jason reunion? what was their dynamic before jason died? does bruce treat jason as his greatest failure the way he did in comics? (ignore if spoilers ofc) thanks!
Hi anon, thanks for your ask! Great questions (really respect that you went for the meaty one right out of the gate there /pos). Let me start out by not answering your questions at all, and I’ll work my way up to some answers.
I’ve mentioned in other posts that I don’t have a concrete outline in place when I write. There are things that I know will happen in Asymmetrical Warfare, and things that I know absolutely will not. In between all of that, there’s wiggle room, a lot of wiggle room. Something that I love about writing fanfiction is that, to me, it’s this neat form of collaborative story telling. At it’s core, AW is my version of the batfam and the story I want to tell about them, but it’s very much influenced by readers and the fandom at large (mostly via its tumblr presence). Comments on ao3, asks on tumblr, random internet convos, the comics I read, all of it influences how I think about AW. (For example, Harm Reduction basically exists solely in response to ao3 comments.) It brings a complexity and richness to AW that wouldn’t be there if I was alone in a vacuum writing the ‘verse from start to finish.
So, how does that relate to your questions…
will there be a bruce-jason reunion?
I honestly don’t know. Most of AW has the ‘identity porn’ tag attached to it. The ‘identity reveal’ tag doesn’t start coming in to play until the end of what I have sketched out so far. When I think about what comes after that, it’s all fade to black. I can make an educated guess based on core character traits, what’s happened so far, and the fixed events/timepoints I know are coming. But, it’s still open to infinite possibilities. At least until the timeline advances further and more details get locked down. The Storm, the arc that comes after Territorial Disputes (the companion piece to Guerrilla Tactics), is a pretty big inflection point. It’s also, you know, not written yet. 😉
what was their dynamic before jason died?
The granular details here are still evolving in my mind, but it’s built on a backbone of a mixed pre- and post- crisis Bruce and Jason. Jason was adopted at 12. They had a father/son dynamic. Bruce was genuinely trying to be a good dad, and he succeeded a lot of the time. Things got rough later on in Jason’s teenage years.
does bruce treat jason as his greatest failure the way he did in comics?
I’m not sure if you’re referring to how Bruce treated Jason’s memory during the period while Jason was presumed dead in the comics, or how Jason is actually treated post his reappearance in the comics, but here’s what I’ll say with respect to the former and AW. The AW Batcave has a Robin memorial with a ‘good solider’ plaque on it. AW Tim is well versed in the dangers of being reckless via the object lesson that is Jason Todd. Sometimes, late at night, usually after a bottle of whiskey or a dose of the good painkillers, AW Bruce thinks about how his greatest failure in life is actually how he’s chosen to cope with the death of his son.
Thanks again for the ask, anon! Hopefully this was as interesting to read as it was for me to write! My ask box is always open 🩵

hiiii. just came from ao3 after reading Asymmetrical Warfare and WHOA. what a story. so incredibly written and such a riveting plot. absolutely fantastic.
And you can totally ignore me if the answers are spoilers, but i'm curious: does AW Jason have All Caste training, or will he be a badass of the non-magical variety? (also, what was his relstionship with Dick before he died? were they close? AND DAMIAN! do Jay and Dami know each other? are they Talia's precious murder boys??)
Helllooooooo! I’m so happy you’re enjoying Asymmetrical Warfare, anon! Thank you so much for your ask!! 🥰 I’d spend all day chatting about AW if I could.
Re Jason and the All Caste, I’m so sorry, but I’m largely going to punt on this one (for a variety of spoiler + not wanting to get pinned down while still working out plot points reasons). A random collection of tangentially related things I will say: 1) AW Jason definitely did a world training tour a la Talia. 2) AW Jason is super cagey and strategic about revealing his skills and experiences. If he did have magic soul swords, it would take a lot for him to pull them out in front of the bats (or anyone, short of demonic entities). 3) I frelling love Jason with a sword. AW Jason definitely has some mad skills in that area - Talia made sure of it. For everyday fighting, though, he prefers knives.
AW Dick was 19 when AW Jason became Robin (Jason was 12 at the time) - so they never overlapped living at the manor, but they had a friendly relationship. Jason definitely looked up to Dick/Nightwing. This is a great tumblr post by calaenaeiln discussing different canon versions of how the Robin mantle passed between Dick and Jason. AW follows the second version (starts at ‘So they magic marker erased’). AW also follows related canon that Dick was in space when Jason died and he missed the funeral. Dick’s canonical guilt and grief over Jason dying — also part of AW.
Damian, largely going to deflect this one as well (sorry!). Dami was 7 when Jason got to the LoA. It is conceivable that they know of each other’s existence, or even that they could have overlapped. Do with that what you will. 😶‍🌫️
Independent of anything that happens in AW, I love when Dami and Jay meet in the League. They are Talia’s precious murder boys in my heart of hearts.
Please don’t let my non-answers dissuade you/anyone from asking questions! It makes my day (week, month, year) when readers are engaged enough in the ‘verse to wonder about what’s happening off page. 🩵
