sorry sometimes i think about mako and my heart hurts so much. this kid raised himself and his brother on the streets in homelessness and utter poverty from eight through fifteen, promptly after seeing the violent death of his mother and father. he turned to the triple threats because they couldn't survive as a pair of wretched kids without any adult support, and the environment forced him to turn into the exact character that killed his parents in a terrible twist of irony. and after sheer-fucking-luck hits and they aren't homeless anymore, their livelihood wavers on the outcome of what's a literally game to everyone but them; and after things are finally starting to look up and their team is going places and things just might be okay, his gradually stabilizing world unceremoniously expands and everything goes to shit.
and the city that chewed him up and spat him back out, ruined him as a child and took away his ability to stay afloat in a true sense of normalcy as an adult — when it's on the verge of destruction and falling to pieces before his eyes, he gives himself to save it with the full expectation to die. he went from the kid who didn't and couldn't care about anything outside of himself and his brother, to finding redemption for his younger self in his police work despite its injustice against him, to willingly sacrificing himself to a world that had never loved him.
he's a desperate people pleaser, socially and emotionally stunted for the adult he had to be as a kid, unable to navigate interpersonal relationships easily yet still trying his damned hardest. he's intensely and entirely devoted to the things that matter to him and for so long it was only him, bolin, and ensuring their survival — yet by the end, that devotion has expanded to protecting the rest of the world. he starts out entirely self-reliant and ends in trusting the people he cares about to know their own needs, to be able to take care of themselves, to be okay without him despite having spent so much of his life defined by his role in others' well-being.
just. what the fuck i'm such a big fan of this fictional guy and i'm unashamed about it at this point. also let him cry please (if you won't i'll do it i'll let him cry)

what if i said soapgazreader love triangle that turns into poly..... what if everybody is an idiot and nobody realises that you're all in love with each other..... (wc: 0.4k) (nudge nudge)
you’re crushing on john mactavish, hard, and everybody knows it.
there's no denying the way your eyes shine whenever you look at him, or the joy that lights up your face when he makes you laugh. you hang on his every word and always have his coffee ready for him on the mornings they're on leave, you remember what he likes as if it's second nature. it's endearing how devoted to him you are, and it would be sweet – if soap ever spared you a second glance, that is.
kyle sees what you don't, though. he sees the men and women johnny goes home with, he has to listen with gritted teeth to his bragging the next morning. he sees the way johnny brushes you off, accepting your kindness without ever giving any back. kyle knows all too well that he doesn't think about you when you're not around, and you're completely, blissfully oblivious.
it twists kyle's heart, every time he asks his friend how you are, his flatmate, and soap can't really give him an answer – because he doesn't pay attention to you. he has no idea that you wait up for him every time they go to the pub, and that you get so worried when he doesn't come home that you text kyle to ask if he's alright. he can never bring himself to tell you the truth. he knows it’s wrong, but he wants you to be happy, so he tells you soap crashed at his place and forgot to tell you.
he's not even sure you believe it at this point, but you never ask any more questions. and the worst part about it all?
kyle knows he could treat you so much better.
he cares about soap, of course he does. the two of them have been through hell together, they have each other's back no matter what. kyle’s seen him at his worst moments, and soap’s seen him at his. there’s nothing the two of them don’t know about each other – aside from how he feels about you. kyle cares for all their teammates, but the bond he and soap have is deeper than that.
and then there’s you.
he'd spend every night in with you, because he knows you don't like big crowds or loud bars, he'd bring you flowers and rub your shoulders and text you every chance he got when he was away. he'd do all the things you want soap to do and more, you'd never even have to try to catch his attention.
soap doesn't appreciate you – everything you do for him – not like kyle would. if you could just see him, he knows you'd be so much happier.so, if he were to make you see him? to show you true devotion so you can forget about soap? it would be for your own good, wouldn't it? selfish motivation, yes, but there's no doubt that he's what you need.

Round 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut
Mipha
Honestly she's not just a victim of yaoi, tbh. Basically: she canonically had a massive crush on the protagonist, Link, which consistently gets swept under the rug or ignored entirely in favor of shipping Link with her brother Sidon, their fellow champion Revali, or Zelda herself. She deserves nice things and so many people just... completely overlook her??
She has a crush on Link, but so does her younger brother Sidon, who is much more affable and outgoing. Link/Sidon is the more popular ship. Mipha gets a lot of flak for being a weak female character who's only defined by her romantic relationship to the protagonist. That's not really fair; she has her own storyline about being the golden girl from her town who everyone looks up to, and the hole that's left in the town after her death. It is unfortunate that she is better remembered as the less compelling corner of a love triangle.
The princess of the Zora, sweetheart of the Zora's Domain. Champion pilot of the Divine Beast Vah Ruta. Master healer, cut down in her prime by an ancient evil. But you wouldn't know it, because she's reduced to someone who was in love with Link (the game's protagonist), and therefore has to be sidelined and villainized to ship Link with her younger brother Sidon or her fellow Champion Revali.
Zelda
She spent 100 years in a metaphysical wrestling match with an ancient and primal evil after seeing it destroy almost everyone and everything she held dear in the hopes of saving the few that remained and Link's main goal after HIYAHing his way out of a amnesia-inducing coma was to come in and tag team said evil in order to save her and like 90% of the memories he can regain focus on their relationship with each other and its gradual improvement up to the point where Link fucking dies protecting her and it's the push she needs to awaken the power to push back the blight and PEOPLE ARE STILL OUT THERE IN THEIR POST-CANON FANWORKS TRYING TO TELL ME THAT LINK FUCKS OFF AND LEAVES HER ALONE TO GO SMOOCH THE HOT FISH PRINCE BECAUSE ZELDA WAS BEING TOO OVERBEARING OR WHATEVER AND HE COULDN'T DEAL WITH THE EXPECTATION??? LIKE ZELDA'S WHOLE FUCKING ARC WASNT ALSO ABOUT HER STRUGGLING WITH EXPECTATION AND FAILING TO LIVE UP TO IT AND YOU WANT ME TO BELIEVE THIS WUALITY THEY BOTH OSTENSIBLY HAVE IN COMMON WOULD DRIVE A WEDGE BETWEEN THEM?? WHERE'S ZELDA YOU COWARDS?? I DON'T EVEN CARE IF YOU DON'T WANT HER AND LINK TO BE TOGETHER, JUST STOP DIMINISHING THE GRAVITY OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP AND MAKING ZELDA SUCK FOR NO REASON. SHE'S A BIG NERD! SHE GETS TOO IN HER OWN HEAD! SHE'D DO ANYTHING TO HELP THE PEOPLE SHE CARES ABOUT! SHE UNASHAMEDLY AND EXCITEDLY TRIED TO FEED HER PERSONAL KNIGHT A LIVE FROG IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE! HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE HER
Im specifically saying botw Zelda here because oh my gOSH this poor girl can get made out to be like a horrible bitch when people. want link to get that shark dick. on average she doesnt get thattttt badly treated compared to some others but goddamn.
title character but people hate her because they want link to get w sidon. so she gets fridged or entirely forgotten even though shes literally his canonical soulmate and they have been reincarnated together hundreds of times (w ganon but whether u make em poly or make him the long suffering third wheel is up to you). people will be like oh but zelda was mean to him that one time (??). be serious w me rn. she just got removed from fandom entirely and if that isnt the epitome of victim of yaoi idk what is.

God i love this scene so much:
Tumblr media
Everybody's talked about it already, a lot to love here, but what gets to me is that it took Mike all season to touch Will like he does in this scene.
They began s4 with that super awkward meeting at the airport. Will went for a hug, but was denied; Mike only patted his shoulder half-heartedly and acted like Will was radioactive. There's a careful distance between them all season, so unlike how they behaved in s2 or even s3, and although it gets better after they make up in 4x04 it doesn't disappear until vol.2.
Sure, they touch during s4, but it's not really purposeful. It's just taking action together, being in dangerous situations or simply occupying the same space (the van).
But in vol. 2? They search for physical proximity. They don't need to stand close together, but they do. They can easily avoid bumping elbows but they don't.
So here, in this sunlit scene, they take a minute to sit on the couch and have one of their talks (they seach for emotional connection too!). Their friendship seems completely restored, and there's a sense of comfort with each other, even though they're worried, like everyone else, about the situation they find themselves in.
They're sitting cross-legged, mirroring, feet pointing to each other. But Will is clasping his hands nervously, and Mike's are placed carefully on his knees. His leg is also up; he's mindful not to cross into Will's space or even into the light between them.
Still, his eyes are on Will, he's facing the same direction, and the arrow above his heart is still pointing like a compass, like Will is his True north.
(I wonder if we can attribute this compass metaphor to Will/Mike/El triangle. Both in s1 and s4 Dustin discovers that the compass isn't pointing where it's supposed to, cause there's a massive source of electro-magnetic field that disturbs the magnet inside the compass. Can El metaphorically be this anomaly that caught Mike's attention when his True north is actually elsewhere?)
It's like Mike's whole being is tuned to Will again. Like Will is pulling him in, pulling him close despite himself, despite both of them.
So when Will confindes in Mike about Vecna and we see how worried and scared he actually is, Mike can't keep his hands to himself anymore.
He reaches out to hold Will's shoulder - very much deliberately this time, with purpose and meaning and feeling.
It also mirrors Will's gesture at the pizza place, when he grabs Mike's shoulder to remind him that "you're the heart" and punctuates his words by little taps on Mike's back.
So here, on the couch, putting a hand on Will's shoulder and keeping it there even when they're interrupted (by a car pulling up) - it's like a reply Mike's giving him, and a silent thank you, and also a promise. It's amazing how much is communicated here without having to say it out loud.
And i love it. I love it so much. I just love it.
It's like their whole journey this season has peaked with this one gesture.
Especially Mike's journey. It really took him this whole-ass double-time season, bless his heart.

Why does Mayu dislike Kokomo?
I wouldn't really say she dislikes Komomo so much as she's disappointed in Komomo, which is of course worse.
There are a few wrestlers in Stardom right now whose like, defining character trait is how much they LOVE WRESTLING, just as like, as a physical artform, the techniques, the matches, the fighting. That's not Komomo. Momo loves Stardom, specifically Stars, extra-specifically Stars from around 2018-19, when they were defined by Mayu/Arisa/Saki/Tam as the core of the unit. She idolizes that era of the unit a LOT - that's why she specifically requested to join Stars, even despite Tam and Unagi rolling out the reverse-psychology red carpet to try and invite her to Cosmic Angels.
But even out of those four, Saki is her #1, her bias, her babygirl. For a while she had this belief that Stars is SO GREAT that she would be able to bring back all the former members just by asking them, though she's pretty much gotten over that. But even with her Oedo Tai ways, Momo's love for Saki has not diminished in the slightest. She's uh. Maybe even a little into it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, maybe a lot into it.
In their 5 Star match, Saki said Momo could either have a free signed photobook, or she could have the two points from their match. Momo said "Easy, the signed photobook, no question. And then I'll just beat you anyway." Saki tried to make her give the photobook back once she actually pulled it off but it seemed like she just liked that too.
Tumblr media
So anyway, despite clearly being the best wrestler of all time, Momo performs pretty poorly as far as actual results. She's not really a rookie any more, not that she's extremely experienced, but she's been wrestling for a few years and should kind of be doing better than she does; the idea is she basically loves Stardom too much to just focus on the fact that she's actually there now and should be trying to win.
So she teams with Mayu in Tag League this year. It's a dream come true for Momo and she is SO DETERMINED to make Mayu proud. Mayu is... supportive, basically saying she thinks Momo has potential, but lacks discipline, so she's not sure how it'll go. At one point she says "Komomo could be my best tag partner ever or my worst tag partner ever, that's up to her."
They do... okay? I'd say, better than you'd expect from a "one of the strongest people in the company and an underperforming rookie" team. But Mayu knows Momo's trying, and that's what counts. They do get some wins that are decent for them, but some disappointing losses too.
But their opponents on the last day are Team We Love ToSpo, Saki and Fukigen Death, and Momo shows up looking like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(In case you can't make it out, her extra gear all says "Saki Kashima" and "LOVE")
They actually win the match, thanks to Mayu "I definitely don't pay attention to or care about Saki Kashima" Iwatani pinning Saki with her own move, but Mayu is PISSED at Komomo for going into this match where she is supposed to be her tag partner completely decked out in Saki stan gear. Saki Kashima, who did betray her horribly. She says she's not taking it seriously enough, that the rest of Stars give her dirty looks for this stuff, that this is why Hazuki gave up on training her.
Komomo is gutted. She says this is who she is but she doesn't want to let Mayu down and doesn't want Stars to hate her, so she'll reflect on it and work really hard to make them proud. She enters Triangle Derby alongside Mayu and Hanan, and it's not quite clear whether she specifically asked for that to be their team, or if she's just happy with the team she was assigned. Hanan constantly assumes everything in Stars is great so she's happy as a clam. Mayu is pissed though, and while she seems to feel maybe a little bad for coming off so harsh after last time, she also REALLY doesn't want to deal with that shit again.
Idk if you've seen the gifs/clips, anon/readers, of Hazuki slapping the absolute shit out of Komomo in their match in December, but that's what it was about. Komomo was so excited to wrestle against Stars and got caught up doing the kuma dance with Koguma, and Hazuki slaps the daylights out of her not because she hates her or something, but because she's being a Stardom stan first and a wrestler second AGAIN.
So so far, that's been Komomo's story in Triangle Derby. She's trying SO, SO HARD to squash down the stan part of herself, and is managing to try really hard and wrestle seriously! They fought Saki's team, Gold Ship, in their very first match, Momo specifically volunteered to go first, AND tried to call out Saki to prove she would fight her seriously this time. (Saki ignored her, obviously, but once they were in the ring together Komomo did pull it off!) They also fought their Stars teammates again, and once again this time Momo took it very seriously instead of getting caught up like she did in the past. H&M's lost both times, but Hazuki said she could tell Momo was really trying to win and that's the part of her she loves to see.
But it hasn't translated to success. H&M's are the only team in the tournament, aside from Lollipop, Waka Tsukiyama's team, that haven't won a single match yet. And if you know who Waka is you know their goal is literally just to win one match, so that's a pretty pathetic comparison for the team that has Mayu in it.
And that being the nature of tournaments, that's where things are at now. We'll have to keep watching to see how things go for Mayu and Komomo. Personally, I really, really want Momo to fail at keeping her ultra stan aura down and absolutely explode on Mayu, brutally turning on her and at the same time finally getting the full, complete Stars experience. I'm kidding, mostly, but I do hope she leaves Stars. I think if the story ends up just being "she squashed down the part of herself that loves this more than anything and eventually started winning" that would be a major fucking bummer.
As for where she could go if things do shake out that way, I would accept pretty much anywhere. I think lots of people see her joining Oedo Tai to be with Saki, and I wouldn't complain about that at all. However, if I can be selfish and just pick one, well, there's one team that loves weirdoes who are too passionate about the things they care about, that she's teamed with before, that have her old friend with them, that even invited her to join them once.
Tumblr media
I don't know how likely it might be, but there's not a shred of doubt in my mind as to where I hope she ends up.
Anyway thank you for reading, have some Komomo pics I love her so, so much that's my WIFE

Analyzing The Witch From Mercury's mechs: Gundam Aerial
Putting a title like this is probably making this seem like a bigger thing than it actually is but fuck you I'll be pretentious about my stuff if I want to
Hello hello! I've been thinking a lot about the mecha design of WFM lately, and some of these thoughts seemed interesting enough that I wanted to share them. This will probably be a series of posts to make it more digestible, since I plan to cover several characters and how the mech(s) they pilot throughout the story reflect them.
A few disclaimers: I'm going to be spoiling the entire show, so please watch it first before reading this, I'm serious, it's really good. Spidey if you read this and go further I'm gonna be mad. Also, this is just for fun, I have no formal training in character design whatsoever, I may read into things too much or not enough or miss obvious stuff, but I also don't care that much tbh it's part of the fun of making my own analysis! If you have your own thoughts to share though I'd love to hear them!
I'm also aware of The Tempest but I didn't read it, don't plan to at the moment, and people already analyzed most of the show under its angle here, so I won't be mentioning it unless I have something to add.
Analysis and spoilers under the cut :>
In order to analyze Aerial, we first need the context of knowing her pilot, Suletta Mercury.
Tumblr media
This is what Suletta looks like for most of the show, with her Holder outfit letting her stand out from the crowd of uniforms at Asticassia but also and most importantly her tomato red hair, which is the color she's most associated with throughout the show (especially visible in the opening and endings).
Tumblr media
And this is what her mech, the Gundam Aerial, looks like.
As far as I know (I've only seen Witch From Mercury, Iron Blooded Orphans and a few episodes of Seed, but I've seen a lot of other Gundams in passing) main character Gundams all face a specific challenge: they have to be based on some level on the original RX-78-2, especially color scheme-wise.
This is also true of Aerial, but I think she does a really good job at giving that color scheme meaning by using it to visually tie herself to her pilot. White, yellow, and the dormant Permet's black are the colours of the Holder outfit, along with the red accents that dispel any possible remaining doubt as to who this mech's pilot might be.
What about the blue, you may ask? It IS the most dominant color in her design after white, after all. Blue is usually associated with Miorine, but here, I think it's associated with Eri. Her original color, red, has been taken over by Suletta, but since this is her body, she's still there through the blue: blue like the Lfrith's Permet scars that originally took her life, and like the Permet score 6 that has Prospera shedding a tear against Shaddiq. Blue, unlike the red Permet that now belongs (mostly) to Suletta, sharing a color with her.
Beyond her colors though, Aerial's shape language also tells us something about her place in the story.
Let's look at the Demi Trainer, the most widely used mech at Asticassia, or in other words, the baseline.
Tumblr media
This mech looks big, heavy, sturdy but not super maneuverable; it's made up of large individual parts shaped with rectangles and a few circles. It doesn't look especially complex either, and its color scheme is toned down, it doesn't stand out much beyond the chest piece.
If we look at Guel's Dilanza, the previous Holder's mech aka the status quo, we find a very similar shape language:
Tumblr media
The color scheme pops a lot more, but it's still mostly the same huge rectangles, with just a few more spikes and triangles that don't really change just how blocky this mech is. It is CHONKY. It looks like it takes space and shakes the ground wherever it goes.
Now let's compare them to Aerial's shape language. She looks much more segmented and has a lot more triangular shapes and angles in her design, which goes completely against the shapes set up by Asticassia's established mechs.
Tumblr media
Her bit-on form emphasizes this even more imo, and the plane-like "wings" on her lower back also increase the feeling that fitting to her name, this is a mech designed for airborne combat, unlike the Demi Trainer and Dilanza that feel very grounded in comparison. Her silhouette feels much lighter and more vertical too instead of a brick.
This all goes to make Aerial look like what she is narratively: a complete gamechanger unlike pretty much anything else. She's the resurgence of Gundams in a world that (mostly) forgot about them, and she looks the part. It's no coincidence that the only other Asticassia mech to share part of her shape language is the Pharact, which is another Gundam.
Tumblr media
That's most of what I had to say about Aerial! I'll cover Rebuild later and hopefully leave a link to it here once I do. I currently also have thoughts about Guel's mechs and the Michaelis that I might share down the line.

Tumblr media
The moment you cross the door all eyes are on you and Hyuck. “What?” He asks and Mark looks at you and then Chenle. They all have their phones in their hands so you automatically take yours out too and see a bunch of notifications. “Of course.” You say, then you scoff and put your phone away again. That girl posted Chenle's video on instagram with a very long text you don't really feel like reading.
Hyuck chuckles as he checks his phone and double taps on the post, making you chuckle too. “You should read it, babe. It's actually funny.” He tells you, dropping the cookie box on a table as you walk over to sit next to Chenle, who looks just as confused as the rest of the guys. “It's okay, he knows.” You say, ruffling Lele's hair, and everyone suddenly seem way more relaxed. Guess Chenle updated them about the whole thing just before you arrived. “Should we all like that post?” Jaemin asks and Mark chuckles. “No, but I think it's a good idea though?” He says. “Yeah, if we just go with it, people won't care for it as much as if we actually try to deny it.” Jisung adds and Jeno chuckles. “We? Are you part of the love triangle?” He asks, pulling some smiles from everyone. “Well, Jisung is Chenle's soulmate after all, isn't he?” You say and Jisung winks at you. “Okay, let's like the post.” Renjun agrees. “I'm kinda annoyed though you guys won't let me just tell that girl off. It's not the first time she does something problematic.” He sighs. “What do you mean?” You ask and the guys look at Hyuck and he looks at you, clearing his throat before talking. “Okay, y/n you remember that I told you people used to ask me to tattoo them but then cancel cause they only wanted an excuse to get to talk to me?” He asks and you nod. “Well, actually it was a bit more complicated than that.” He says, then his eyes drift to Mark's and he sits up on the couch. “Yeah, y/n, back when the tattoo thing happened, we found out that the girl who posted Chenle's video was paying those people to get info about Haechan.” Mark continues. “What??” You ask. “Yep, she has a lot of money apparently, she and her friend also looked completely different back then.” He says and you look at the guys and then at Hyuck. “But what did she want?” You ask and Renjun clicks his tongue. “Just Haechan I guess? She was obsessed with him in a very weird way.” He says and Hyuck sighs. “Yeah. Her friend kissed me at a party and I followed the kiss. She told the guys at the arcade that me ghosting her friend is the reason why she was mad at me, but she was pretty much a stalker even before her friend kissed me.” He explains. “Yeah, we actually thought her friend was just another person she paid to get closer to Haechan.” Mark adds and you feel terrible in almost every way possible. “I'm so sorry I introduced you to them again at the arcade.” You apologize but the guys brush it off. “Please, how could you have known? It's not your fault at all.” Jaemin says, and the others agree. “Y/n, at first not even I could recognize any of them. I only did when they started talking.” Hyuck says and the guys agree. “We only noticed after you guys left so...”
The doorbell rings, saving you all from talking anymore about that horrible person and most of the guys move to help getting the food from the delivery man.
You pout at Hyuck and he chuckles, then you walk towards him to hug. “I'm sorry that I made you talk to her earlier today too.” You say. You really feel bad. “I should have asked about her earlier.” You say as you pout, hanging from his neck and he chuckles. “What? It's fine, dummy.” He says, taking a lock of hair out of your face before pecking your lips. “I could have told you about the whole thing too the day we saw them at the arcade.” He says, pulling you closer with a hug. “Stop blaming yourself, okay?” He asks and you nod, still pouting, making him chuckle softly again before meeting your lips in a kiss.
-------------------------
“What did you order Jisungie?” You ask him, since it seems nobody is handing him his food yet. “Ah, I didn't order anything, I can't eat.” He says and Renjun chuckles. “You can have some ice cream Sung-ah.” He tells him, but Jisung pouts. “No way, after hyung nagged so much at me last night I'm not eating anything.” He says, a bit sulky, and Renjun laughs. “I just can't believe you did shots last night after getting a tongue piercing.” Jeno says, joining Junnie's laughter. “You got a piercing? That's why you've been talking kinda weird? Show me!” You say, but he's still sulking and that only makes Renjun want to bite him apparently. “Jisung-ah. I'm sorry that I nagged at you so much. I was worried about your tongue.” He says and Jaemin chuckles. “He was also sulking about something else last night and took it on you.” He says, casually playing with Junnie's ear and Renjun clicks his tongue, slapping Jaemin's hand away. But Jaemin smiles and pinch Jun's cheek, which makes Renjun frustratedly sigh. “Whatever. The thing is that I was only worried about you last night, but you should definitely eat something cold if you're hungry.” He explains.
You meet Chenle's eyes, who is now sitting in front of you as Renjun and the others keep talking, and realize that you haven't got the chance yet to check on him. But guess it's not the best time right now anyway. Everyone is settling down to finally eat. “Here.” Hyuckie says, handing you some chopsticks and a spoon before sitting next to you. “Thank you~” You smile at him, then you look at Chenle again who smiles at you after a second. Seeing his eye smile for the first time since that video was posted makes your heart jump in happiness. It's the first time too though that you see him so quiet around the guys.
He also seems kinda nervous everytime anyone asks him something, even if it's just to pass the soda or stuff like that, so you decide to wait and ask him when the guys are not around.
He's not finished eating while the guys clean up a bit so you move to sit next to him. “Hey...” You say. “Hi...” He answers, but you hear Hyuckie clearing his throat even before you can actually start a conversation, and you and Chenle look up to see him standing in front of you. You tilt your head confused and Hyuck chuckles softly. “Renjun is asking for you in the kitchen.” He says and you sigh. “Can't he wait?” You ask but Donghyuck shakes his head. “Nope, it sounded urgent.” He says, so you click your tongue and stand up to walk to the kitchen. “Hey, Hyuckie says you called me.” You tell Renjun and he looks at you a bit confused. “I didn't?” He says and now you're more confused than ever. “You didn't? None of you called me?” You check, just in case, and the guys shake their heads.
You walk back to the living room ready to nag at Hyuckie but you stop right before you enter the room. “So... You're not mad at me for not saying anything, hyung?” You hear Chenle ask, and your heart skips a beat. Hyuck clicks his tongue and playfully pulls Chenle towards him with his arm around his neck. “Of course not. I was just worried about my cute dongsaeng and had to check on him.” He says and you pout as your heart gets soft just watching them. Chenle scoffs as soon as he sees you and Hyuck laughs at your pout, releasing Chenle from his hug and inviting you to sit with them. “Agh, I was so ready to nag at you but you were here being all wholesome.” You say and the guys laugh. “Yeah, I'm sorry I tricked you baby, but I really wanted to talk to him alone for a minute.” Hyuck apologizes and you hug him. “Yeah it's fine.” You say. “Are you really okay though? You seemed pretty awkward at lunch.” You ask Chenle and he sighs. “Yeah... I mean, I do feel bad that hyung had to find out about my feelings for you cause of a revenge post instead of myself, but that's my fault too. I could have told him about my feelings getting real before any of this happened.” He says and Hyuck chuckles. “Yeah? Were you ready to talk to me about that, though?” He asks, making you chuckle too and Chenle scoffs after a second as he smiles. “I guess not. You were so fucking whipped... It was kinda scary just thinking about mentioning it.” He admits and you all chuckle. “Aw, you were whipped for me Hyuckie?” You ask, hugging him and he smiles and nods. “I still am.” He confesses before meeting your lips and Chenle rolls his eyes. “See? I thought he'd kill me if I said something. Or he'd try at least.” He says, making you both smile on the kiss.
“Can we come back to the living room now?” The guys ask and you all chuckle. “Yeah.” You say, then you look at Chenle. “Can we talk somewhere else then?” You ask as the guys come back. Chenle nods and Hyuckie lets go of the hug after pecking your lips so you can leave with Lele.
You sit outside in the balcony but regret it almost immediately as you can't even keep your eyes open under that extremely shiny sun, so you laugh at your stupid decision and go back inside and to Hyuckie's room.
You were feeling a bit nervous at first, but not anymore after the balcony moment. “You know, I thought you just wanted to talk, but turns out you wanted to kill me instead.” Chenle jokes and you laugh. “Damn, you were too quick to notice. I'll have to think of something else now.” You say and he chuckles, then you both just remain silent for a bit as you smile.
You sigh after a minute and hold his hand. Guess you got that habit from Hyuckie now. Chenle laces his fingers with yours and you bite your lower lip as you put your thoughts in order inside your head. “Are you really okay with that post?” You ask and he nods. “I was only worried about hyung's reaction since I had already talked to you, and I don't care at all about what people say so...” He explains and you agree. “I'm fine too as long as you two are okay.” You say, then stare at him for a second. “I'm... sorry too that I didn't know what to say earlier today when we first talked.” You apologize and he sighs. “It's okay y/n, I understand. Really.” He says. “I... kinda know what I want to tell you now though... Do you want to hear it?” You ask and he nods as he smiles softly. “Well... I love you.” You say and he chuckles cause he didn't expect that. “Probably not in the same way you may love me, but I do. And... I hate that I hurt you and that I can't fix it.” You say and he smiles kinda mischievously. “Yeah, I hate that too.” He says, squeezing your hand softly, and you pout.
He sighs and sweetely caresses your cheek with the back of his free hand. “I guess we grew closer than we originally thought we'd do, huh? But I'm happy that it happened that way.” He says and your heart flutters. “I think I do love you the same way you love me though, y/n. Me liking you in a romantic way has nothing to do with it... I'm sure I'll still love you even when I get over you. So don't say you don't love me the same way... Just that you love me, yeah?” He says, and you can't help the tears in your eyes. “Yeah.” You say, trying not to break down crying, but failing a little. Making him chuckle at your pout. “Such a crybaby.” He lovingly says, softly wiping the tears that fell down your cheek and you frown, making him laugh again. “I'm sorry.” He says, pulling you into a hug. “Thank you for loving me so much y/n.” He says and you grasp on his clothes as you squeeze him harder. “I love you just as much. I just can't cry at all.” He says, making you giggle. “Ah, that's fine.” You say, pulling away. “I'll cry for the both of us.” You say and he nods as he smiles before you pull him into another hug.
------------------------
Epilogue. “Is Jaemin asleep?” Hyuckie asks as you both walk across the living room. “Mhm~ sound asleep indeed.” Junnie distractedly says as he takes his eyes from his drawing for a moment to check a notification on his phone. “Okay, well, I'm gonna drive y/n home. I'll be back in a bit.” Hyuckie tells him and Renjun nods. “Bye Renjunnie~” You say, hugging him. “Bye~ Be careful yeah? It's late.”
You yawn as soon as you get in the car and Hyuck smiles. “Too many emotions today, huh?” He asks and you giggle. “Yeah, I'm exhausted.” You admit. “Mhm, make sure to get a lot of sleep tonight. Cause I'll be bothering you all day tomorrow.” He says, making you smile. “You better, cause I just know I'm gonna miss you so much tonight.” You say and he chuckles. “Then why are you even leaving? Stay. I don't want you to go? I couldn't even bring myself to start the car yet.” He says and you both chuckle. “Oh god, we're so fucking clingy.” You say. “Yeah!” He proudly says. “Okay, I'm staying then.” You say. “Of course you are!” He exclaims. “Oh, but wait. I want to ask you something before it slips my mind again.” He says and you nod. “So... Your birthday is close right? What would you like to do and is there something you want?” He asks and your heart flutters. “As a present?” You ask and he nods. “Well, duh... I want a tattoo.” You say and he chuckles. “Yeah, I thought so. I'll talk to Renjunnie then.” He says and you shake your head. “I want you to do it, dummy.” You say and he blushes. “Me?” He asks. “Of course, you idiot.” You say before pulling from his shirt to kiss him. “I love Renjun's work but what I really want right now is a tattoo from my cute, clingy boyfriend.” You say, making him chuckle. “If he's okay with it~” You sing and he nods as he smiles. “You can have all the tattoos you want from your silly, clingy boyfriend.” He says. “I never said silly.” You giggle. “That really is a dream come true though. I don't know how it never occurred to me before that dating a tattoo artist could mean infinite free tattoos.” You think out loud and he laughs. “Who said they'll be free?” He asks and you pout. “I'll take ten kisses per tattoo.” He says and you smile. “Just ten?” You ask. “You can always tip.” He wiggles his eyebrows and you giggle. “I sure will.” You say before meeting his lips. “Alright let's go back to the house, I want to smooch you properly.”
The lights are off in the living room as you enter the apartment, so you two just tiptoe your way to Hyuck's room just in case, not to wake up anyone. He pokes around his drawers for some comfy clothes for you while you wait, sitting on his bed. “Just give me whatever you wear to bed. If it doesn't smell like you I don't want it.” You say and he can't help a smile as he keeps looking for it. “Mhm~”
You check your phone for a moment and chuckle seeing how that girl had to delete her stupid post cause everyone was throwing hate at her. Guess the guys were right about liking her post.“Here.” Hyuckie says, handing you one of his shirts and you leave your phone aside again to change. “Thanks~” You say, then a thud coming from another room startles you, followed by some objects clattering and a moan. Your eyes look for Hyuckie's as you blush, but he's staring at the wall, pursing his lips, trying very hard not to smile. “Was that...” You ask and Hyuck bites his lower lip, still trying not to smile or laugh, as if he knew something you don't. But that was definitely Renjun's voice. “Is he... Alone..?” You ask, and Hyuck finally chuckles as you hear more moans and you blush even harder. He sighs then chuckles again. “No y/n, he's not.”

Romance Tropes Bracket
@purlturtle is doing this really cool thing and they said I could ramble about it too! And how could I resist talking story? Do you know me? Hahaha.
Anyway they made this spreadsheet and screenshot and you can check them out on their post (clicky here).
Tumblr media
So in the BLUE CORNER
Bodyguard vs Love Triangle
Workplace vs High School
Second Chances vs. Made A Bet (90s style)
Sibling's Best Friend vs Nanny/Governess
Rocking that RED we have
Grumpy/Sunshine vs Someone Else's SO
Accidental Pregnancy vs Just To Get It Out Of Our Systems
Family Feud (Romeo&Juliet style) vs Holiday Romance
Billionaire vs Soulmates
The sun shines down on YELLOW
Mistaken Identity vs Age Gap
Love Potion/Aphrodisiac vs Only One Bed
Amnesia vs Kissing Lessons
Forced Proximity (road trip etc.) vs Secretly a celeb/royal
Aaaaaand finally working that GREEN
Marriage of Convenience vs Fake Dating
Snowed In vs Friends To Lovers
Bad Boy/Girl vs Sworn Off Love
Supernatural (vampires etc.) vs Enemies To Lovers
Under the cut for my picks and rambles!
Bodyguard vs Love Triangle I don't do Love Triangle, either pick one and then let everyone move on or all be together as a trio. My very first real 'ship' had a sort of love triangle (the lady dated one guy, then the other, then back to the first etc.) but I only shipped her with the first guy (it was Jack Malone and Sam Spade from Without a Trace). So the whole 'love triangle' aspect was lost on me as I just did not care.
Bodyguard though... that has serious potential. So much so I have some vague concepts for an original novel trilogy based around it. Bodyguard is sort of what Eve Baird does on the Librarians (Guardian) but also not. I mean it can depend a little bit. I like the whole protective part to a point, but not if it takes the protectees agency away. I'm not fond of 'damsel', I would rather they kick butt together.
WINNER: Bodyguard
Workplace vs High School This one is super easy - has to be Workplace because High School = kids. I have no interest in teenagers. Teachers maybe but that would be a workplace. Even when I was a kid I didn't write about kids. I skipped the whole YA thing completely.
WINNER: Workplace
Second Chances vs. Made a Bet (90's Style) I had to ask what 'Made a Bet' was because I didn't know. @purlturtle suggested it was like a '10 things I hate about you' thing, where they date on a bet and then catch real feelings. Now catching feels - that's cool, but the whole bet thing? I don't know...
I did write a fic prompt once where they were in a bar and two characters were challenging each other to see who could pull the guy they picked out. I suppose that's ok as a concept. I didn't develop it so it clearly didn't grab me that much though.
Second Chances though - this I like. I mean I suppose there's the whole "if it didn't work out before, why would it work now?" question, as in their relationship failed for a reason. But maybe that's because they needed to work on themselves. Sometimes people are just idiots and make assumptions and don't communicate properly. I'm actually writing a serial at the moment with a second chance romance in it (divorced ex-wives have to work together). So this does grab me.
WINNER: Second Chances
Sibling's Best Friend vs Nanny/Governess Got to be honest neither of these jump out at me as being something I'm really drawn to. Although I am sniggering a little bit as I think Nanny/Governess is a favourite of Janeway's (wasn't that her preferred holonovel?). So I'm tempted to vote for Janeway but ehhh. It has a bit of a power dynamic vibe I don't like.
Sibling's Best Friend is very... cute I guess. I don't really have much to say about it to be honest. I'm going to make it win on default but meh.
WINNER: Sibling's Best Friend
------------------------------
Mistaken Identity vs Age Gap I have written Age Gap - obviously, as I wrote a hell of a lot of Rumbelle (Rumple and Belle, Once Upon a Time) back in the day. Only... I got to be honest I never really saw it as an age gap thing. It totally was and by a LOT because Rumple was semi-immortal as the dark one. He was a couple of centuries old when they met but... age gap romances usually make me uncomfortable because of the inherent power dynamic. Rumple had so little self-confidence that just wasn't an issue.
Mistaken Identity - "do you let them hate the real you, or love the fake you" - HELL YES! Quote from Sophie Devereaux there and the espionage/heist fan in me is compelled. Also superheroes I guess ala Supercorp. Give me all the stories about masks people wear and just wanting to be loved for who they really are.
WINNER: Mistaken Identity
Love Potion/Aphrodisiac vs Only One Bed *cough* show me a person who wasn't read a few sex pollen fics in their time in fandom, and I'll show you a liar. I jest, I jest but also not really. It's not a bad setup for a PWP so long as consent is clearly established and we know before they are under the influence that they are into one another. I suppose there could be a fair bit of plot in terms of consequences but I have no wish personally to write about consent issues.
Only One Bed though - CLASSIC! I mean it's iconic. It's two people pining like idiots, putting up pillow walls between them, the inevitable cuddling in the night and then awkward aroused awakenings. I wrote this in my Conspiracy Afloat fanfic and I'm sure I'll write it again. It's the classic and you can't go wrong with a classic.
WINNER: Only One Bed
Amnesia vs Kissing Lessons Kissing Lessons? This is a new one on me but not hard to figure out. It feels quite juvenile, like maybe a good match for the teenagers in High School?
Amnesia though - oh yes! I don't know if I first loved this trope when I saw the Harrison Ford movie Regarding Henry, or if I saw the trope elsewhere first, but it's very good. The "I'm sorry who are you?" "I'm your wife" and not remembering, having to fall in love again. The agony of the lost shared memories, of not recalling the life they had together, of making new memories. Hell yeah!
WINNER: Amnesia
Forced Proximity (road trip etc.) vs Secretly a celeb/royal Forced Proximity has it's place as a supplement. Like I talked earlier about the Second Chance divorced exes who had to work together. They are getting that Second Chance because of the forced proximity. As a trope on it's own though? Ehhh.
The Secretly a Celeb/Royal... depends if you can expand that. I have long loved the idea of some super rich person being incognito because 'Rich people wear expensive clothes and drive posh cars and go fancy places' and so seeing Joe or Jane Regular, they think 'oh you look like X' rather than thinking they are actually X. I planned out a Rumbelle fic to this premise that I never wrote, but I swear I will write this someway, someday. It partly goes back to the Mistaken Identity and masks, and do they love the real you. With money, meeting someone and them not knowing you are rich is perhaps one of the few ways to be sure about that. But at what point do you tell the truth? The longer it goes on the more feelings of betrayal there are - very similar trope really. Now obviously royal is a whole thing on it's own but put the 'secretly' in front of it and it becomes something else.
WINNER: Secretly a celeb/royal
------------------------------
Grumpy/Sunshine vs Someone Else's SO Someone Else's SO sounds like cheating/infidelity and I'm not interested in that. Just pick a side and then be honest about it.
I think Grumpy/Sunshine... I'm trying to think of an example. I suppose perhaps I tend to interpret it more as somebody who is reserved vs. someone who is social. Or possibly someone who is cynical/snarky/sarcastic vs. someone who is optimistic/positive/kind. I have definitely written this and will definitely write more of it. It definitely has it's place but equality works too.
WINNER: Grumpy/Sunshine
Accidental Pregnancy vs Just To Get It Out Of Our Systems Honestly not a fan of either, but definitely not a fan of oops pregnancy. It's just not a conflict I am interested in. It doesn't compel me. To be honest neither does the 'Get it out of our systems' because... well it seems odd. Like if you like one another then why is it a one and done? This wins by default but meh.
WINNER: Just To Get It Out Of Our Systems
Family Feud (Romeo & Juliet style) vs Holiday Romance A feud does have potential, the whole 'forbidden love' aspect. I have written this. I have a daughter of politically powerful parents falling in love with a rebel in my Steampunk AU. That's not a family feud, more of a civil class war thing.
Holiday Romance is pretty cool. The whole 'we really click but there is a time limit on it' thing. I did write this once (a Rushbelle fic). As a standard trope it's not something that interests me that much. Now a romance developing during the holidays as like a mutually pining idiots friends to lovers type thing - that's more what I like. I planned and never wrote 2 Bering and Wells christmas fics. First was a fake dating AU where Myka claims Helena is her girlfriend to shut up her sister only to have to invite Helena for the holidays (I know, it's cliche but fun). The other was canon-divergent off season 3 I guess where Helena rejoined the Warehouse and Myka invited her as a 'friend' for Christmas so she wasn't alone at the B&B. Only there was a mix-up and they went to Myka's parents, who weren't home (at the sisters) and they get snowed in, power cuts (huddling together for warmth), only one bed - basically every trope you can think of and hey - Forced Proximity lol - and it gets them to admit feelings. The holidays can add an intensity but neither of these two were technically holiday romance.
WINNER: Holiday Romance
Billionaire vs Soulmates I wrote Soulmates!! It was a Sanctuary fic (Time Will Tell) and it started off as a thought experiment/self-challenge. I don't like the idea of fate and then everything being happy because you have found your 'one' (or in my OT3 case, two). So I really pushed hard on the 'love is a choice' angle, and that lots of soulmate relationships failed because relationships take work. The 'this could be your future but only if you choose it, only if you work for it'. Made me love it. It was fun to explore how having this ticking timer could affect people's personalities, the development of the relationship (having the certainty could be paradoxically paralysing). What that did to society and prejudices etc.
Now of course Billionaire does sort of go back to what I described earlier with the 'Secret Celeb' trope. Having money is kind of a fantasy and it makes for a fun world. You can have them sail around in a yacht, go skiing and sit by the fire in a wood lodge, private jet travel etc. but I don't know. Apart from the 'do you like me or just my money' conflict, having a ton of money is just like so what? It removes worry about paying bills and buying food and that's awesome, takes those stresses off a relationship, but if you don't have to be a billionaire for that, and that as the sole trope... where's the story?
WINNER: Soulmates
------------------------------
Marriage of Convenience vs Fake Dating OH NO YOU DIDN'T?!?! I have to choose? I suppose they are very similar. It's the pretend relationship and then the 'oh no I caught feelings' and that like Only One Bed is a complete classic.
I'm going to go with Fake Dating purely because it's likely to come up more. Although I can think of so many ideas for Marriage of Convenience. They are both so good! They are both winners in my heart.
WINNER: Fake Dating
Snowed In vs Friends To Lovers This is like a situation vs. a dynamic. Snowed In is quite specific. I talked about it earlier with the Bering and Wells christmas fic. It's not something that will happen in a lot of stories because some places don't have snow, or it's not set in winter etc.
Whereas Friends to Lovers is basically everything I write ever. How can people be lovers if they aren't friends? If they don't like one another. Friendship is the foundation. Even when I wrote Enemies to Lovers (Timeless, Flynn and Lucy) there was a loooooong stop off at friends in the middle.
WINNER: Friends to Lovers
Bad Boy/Girl vs Sworn Off Love Ok this feels like an unpopular opinion but if they are actually a 'bad boy/girl' then no, just no. If they are misunderstood, they have a heart of gold etc. then they aren't really 'bad' and so it's just aesthetics or something? Like pretending to be a rebel but not really. I don't get it to be honest.
Sworn Off Love though... so much yes. Think about Helena who didn't want to love, who intended their heart to be frozen, to no longer really beat because it belonged to Christina, their daughter who was gone. But Helena hadn't reckoned on Myka who found a way in anyway, and it was agony, but that love saved the world.
WINNER: Sworn Off Love
Supernatural (vampires etc.) vs Enemies To Lovers Ok my previous mention of Flynn and Lucy aside I really don't go in for Enemies to Lovers. If people are enemies they hate each other - hate is the opposite of love. Yes it's an extreme emotion but I don't get how it works except with a very long stop-off in friends first, and then that feels like not really Enemies to Lovers anymore.
Supernatural though can be fun. I have a long fascination with immortality. One partner living forever and the other one getting older, dying. I hate it, I hate it so much because it hurts, and yet it is compelling. I want to fix it. That's probably it. Carol and Maria from Captain Marvel. Breaks my heart :(
Doesn't just have to be immortality either. I know Harry Potter shouldn't be mentioned today but the Remus and Tonks relationship had potential as a dynamic. Remus as a werewolf saw himself as less than, as not being human - not being WORTHY. It's that kind of self-hate which makes me bond with characters (Rumple had the same thing going on). But the whole I love you, all parts of you, even the monster parts - that acceptance of the flaws. That's good stuff.
WINNER: Supernatural
I will post up the next bracket when @purlturtle does theirs! Though we did pick some different things so their bracket will look different from mine. It's going to be interesting!! :)

And to add to insult, it was already a bit surprised the show be renew, so the odds of getting yet another season were really low. So or the Nancy drew writes didn't even really wanted to go there but to please the fans went there the most superficial way just to get over or they thought not giving the fans a really nice last season of them together would maybe have the fans do a #savenancydrew, which it was a bet that they lost, because the show was never a super hit, also the state of cw and tv as a whole. Sucks when writes just don't care enough to end on a high because somehow most of them think angst, separations, other LI, will they won't they, will sell more that. As audience I think all that just water down what supposed to be great love history. Like you said does Nance even love him? They mess up the golden rule of televison, don't tell me something, show me
Yes, the last season should've been more impactful and a homage to the fans and to what the show did best. We love the show because of the characters and their relationships. We didn't need a last season that completely undermined some of these dynamics and was so heavy on new relationships and characters we don't care about. It's bad enough that we lost The Claw lmao.
Nancy and Ace absolutely had the chance to be an epic love story but their relationship is so underdeveloped that it will only ever be a very shippable ship with potential and outlines of greatness. The way Ace and Nancy's friendship developed in seasons 1 and 2, especially in late season 1 and early season 2, was beautiful, but even season 3 was a misstep imo. Park's introduction and the lack of good Nace content in some ways brought their relationship to a halt, especially after Nancy's big revelation in the season 2 finale. The writers also needed to develop their relationship in other fronts. Romance isn't just about jealousy, insecurity, and the revealing and confessing of feelings, and Nace's relationship should've deepened in other ways. More than Nancy relying on Ace, we should've seen Ace rely on Nancy - and Ace actually reaching out for help, or learning how to -, or Nancy being more in tune with Ace. But Ace's insecurities weren't really solved then and certainly won't be solved now, and Nancy was just as distracted by other stuff in season 3 as usual, and we even had an episode of Ace being in trouble and Nancy being clueless about it (because Ace didn't ask for help and she ignored his random request to solve a riddle that in the end took only two seconds to solve). Ace establishing a connection with Nancy by tapping on her shoulder in Morse code was not proof of the strength of their bond lmao. We needed their relationship, both romantic and otherwise, to be developed, so it was less unbalanced and limited to solving cases.
We also deserved an actual relationship between them, which now we won't ever get because the writers wasted the final season on bullshit love triangles and forbidden love stories. We deserved to see how badass Nace really are together, how they can manage their differences and make each other better (since we haven't seen much of that lately), and how Ace can overcome his insecurities and Nancy her fear of commitment and intimacy. A healthy, loving, supportive, equal romantic partnership between is what would elevate their relationship to legendary status - not this forbidden love, possible literal soulmates whatever, angle.
Nace could've been something so beautiful, but the writers are clearly stubborn and uninterested in maturing Nancy. She's forever the girl who can't see past her need to solve cases, or been on a real relationship where she has to compromise, let someone else in, and not just do everything her way. She's the cliché detective type... Usually shows care too much about romance, but in this case it's less about romance and more about how a real romantic relationship would be great for Nancy's growth and character development, but sadly that won't happen.
Nancy may love Ace but truly her immaturity and poor writing make it seem like she doesn't, or like Ace isn't really a priority most of the time - not unless he's in danger and especially not when she feels rejected. *Sigh*
Thanks for the ask!

Hey! So while I was reading your Popshine/JessicaxRoger Switcheroo AU I was listening to that Steven Universe Song- Its Over Isn't It (And just a precurser- i havent seen this show i just like the song and am just taking context clues from it). And I've been stewing on it since, and can't stop thinking about a Shiny x Poppy x Psycho love triangle with this plot! Lots of angst ahead, I warn you 😅
Like, imagine both Psycho and Shiny are in love with Poppy and she cares deeply for the both of them too. Shiny can make a joke of this, playfully argue with Psycho any time he's around and bother him as much as she can- because she doesnt think she'll actually lose Pops to him but his presence does annoy her. Her heart is, inevitably, broken when in the end Poppy chooses him.
I was fine with the men-
Who come into her life now and again.
I was fine, cuz I knew,
That they didn't really matter until you.
I was fine when you came, and we fought like it was all some silly game.
Over her- who she's choose-
After all those years, I never thought I'd lose.
Poppy and Psycho then have the twins, and Shiny fades into the background (as much as she can, I mean. Poppy still loves her and wants to be friends of course)- until Poppy dies. I'm not sure how, considering she is a toon of course, but it was definitely tragic.
Now Shiny has to help Psycho take care of the twins because he can't do it alone (She certainly knows it), and she needs to keep the last bit of Poppy left over, safe.
Of course you're welcome to ignore this if you want! Just thought I should tell you since it's about your OC's 😅
AWSTTHJOLNJTESDU7JHTEDF ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE ME CRY!?!? WELL YOU SUCCEEDED-
Ok ok ok. Before I get into my response to this, I've got some headcannons for this little AU. So. Poppy is dead. Psycho is not only mourning the sudden loss of his wife, but he's also a father now. He's got two kids he has to figure out how to raise through the depression. This would be hard on anybody. But on someone as mentally unstable as Psycho?? Holy. Shit. He's gonna need a lot of help. Shiny knows this, and although she and Psycho aren't friends thanks to their little love rivalry (I like to imagine she and Psycho could get along on their own. Maybe not be best friends, but it's Shiny's whole damn job description to get along with everyone she meets. If they didn't love the same woman, she could have made an acquaintance with Psycho work), she steps in whenever she can. Being more than just the Godmother Poppy asked her to be for the kids; at this point, the twins are practically her own, too. And she's the closest they have to a mother figure in their lives.
In fact, I think in this storyline, Shiny would have offered to take Psycho's position in the Toon Patrol. Those kids need a parent who won't get pulled away because of a new job. Or could easily be killed on said job either. And Psycho needs to be able to focus on his children full time now that it's just the three of them. Sure, if he does die too, the twins will be under her care, but Shiny isn't going to deprive them of the father they need now. Not to mention that this is around the 60's-70's; burlesque clubs aren't very popular now. Not as much as they were in her time anyway. Shiny needs a new job. And hey, she already had one foot in the criminal life with her moonshine business. Why not kill two birds with one stone? (Sometimes Psycho does have to get called for a job that only he can do, though he is still mostly a stay at home dad.)
So to the twins in this storyline, Shiny is not just their cool aunt. She's involved in so much of their lives. Going to school functions with Psycho to support all three of them, celebrating holidays all the time with them, and just generally making sure he doesn't screw up as a dad. She and Psycho here don't necassarily like each other, but she's short of moving in with them from becoming a complete member of their household. It's partially due to her legal status as a godmother, and she herself has grown an attachment to Poppy's children. And it hurts her so much more because this is the family of the woman she loved, and the other man.
Because she's trying her best to be the stability this family needs, Shiny never got to really mourn Poppy's death and, as such, hasn't been able to truly move on. She feels like she can't truly talk about her position about this to anyone since she has to be strong for the kids. But eventually, bottled emotions have to come out one way or another. Why not let them come out in song?
Also, after our convo, I'm making widower gardener Psycho canon in this AU :)
Tumblr media
Warnings for: past character death, angst, plenty of cursing, a lot of crying. Also emotional singing (I don't care if it may come out as cringy- if I can't animatic Shiny singing this song, then I'm gonna write it!)
~
January 2, 1973
"Goodnight, Shiny."
"G'night, you little rascals. Don't forget to bite the bed bugs back for me!"
The two children giggled, Percival letting out a "That's gross!" around his laughter, before their father gently nose nudged them both towards the hallway. The twins gave him and their godmother one final hug before making their way to the back of the house to do as they were silently told how they could behave so well despite being raised by two hooligans, Shiny had no clue. It must be Poppy's influence. Usually Psycho didn't pay much mind to bedtimes, though it was late on an already long day. They all needed rest...
The grin on Shiny's face finally fell, only after Psycho glanced briefly towards her- telling the old dancer in his own way to go home now, before following his children. Now it was just her alone standing in the seemingly empty living room. It had been a long day for them all. Especially for the kids...
'Another birthday come and gone...'
visiting the grave of a woman that they didn't even know, but were supposed to. That would be scary and thought-provoking for anybody. No matter how old or young they were. Who knew what kind of shit was going through Penny and Percy's heads whenever they saw their mothers name on a tombstone?
But at least, they had as good of a support system they could get. All Penny and Percy needed to worry about now was what story their father would tell them tonight, and how many sheep they'd have to count to fall asleep. But they were getting older, too. And someday, they would lose the innocence that came with childhood...
Shiny's fists clenched, and an ugly frown tugged at her lips, choosing to glare at the floorboards as if they somehow spoke ill about her. Every year, this day was so damn hard for her. At least on the twins' birthday, she could distract herself with Penny and Percy's happy demeanor and what the day is supposed to be about. But on Poppy's birthday, all anybody could think of was how their friend was no longer with them to celebrate with.
The weasel woman growled a little before silently storming towards the front door, trying so hard to ignore the pain in her heart. She had to leave and go home anyway, but she also needed some fresh air. It was the only thing that could help her now- or at least that was what she could hope.
The former dancer's paw hovered over the doorknob in hesitation when she heard the familiar pitter patter of rain drops hitting the roof. Before she even stepped outside, 'Of course. Of course, it's going to be raining tonight.' If she were religious, she would have taken this as a sign that even the universe was sorrowful on this day. didn't bother with thoughts like that. They brought no reassurance or comfort to her despite so many people telling her it would.
Shiny just barely managed to not slam the door behind her before sinking down onto the porch steps. The night air was chilly, causing the rain to feel ice cold on her skin, not that Shiny cared at the moment. And the lamp across the street had gone out again. Shiny hadn't bothered turning on the porch light; it would just draw more attention towards her. More so than a wrech sitting on someone else's porch in the rain in the middle of the neighborhood would. At least the people around here knew to mind their own business.
That was one of the things Poppy liked about this place when they went house hunting; it was a valuable perk for anybody married to unlawful citizens. The perk for Shiny was that her house was just a few blocks away, and she could have visited Poppy and the kids more often...
"Fuck!" She roughly rubbed her eyes, trying desperately to get rid of the now familiar stinging before the floodgates started. Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck. Why? Why? Why did it have to be so damn hard just to think of that woman's name? To think about a future that would never be reality now? She knew why, but why!?
Shiny sucked in a long, overdue breath and heaved it out before slumping over in defeat. Her elbows were resting on her knees, but they hardly supported her it felt like, as she hung her head. If she closed her eyes, she knew that Poppy's grave would be all that she'd see, so Shiny settled for just staring into the wet, muddy ground. Her voice was so soft, so fragile, she would have wondered if she actually said anything if she wasn't focusing on other things, "Why did it have to be you?"
God. So much had changed over the years. It was hard to believe they all had come this far. How much they all had changed. Sure, Smartass still had his gang, and the rest of the boys were still in it. But everything was different. And it wasn't just Psycho becoming a father and widower. She was different...
So much had changed. Nothing was the same. Or ever will be again... She couldn't even remember the last time she sang. Singing and dancing used to be one of Shiny's favorite forms of expression; it had been more than just a way to make money to her. But there wasn't a need for it now. She worked in the night under a very different career now. What point was there in singing anymore?
Shiny ran a paw through her hair it had grown longer over the years. She simply hadn't bothered to cut it anymore. She couldn't see the point in it nowadays before tilting her head to the left to look at the poppies lining the house. She was careful, despite her broiling emotions and shaky paw, when she reached towards the one closest to her and grazed her fingers over the petals. It was actually Percy's idea to plant the poppy flowers, 'so mom can be home' he had said. Just more proof that the little kit thought about things a lot more than kids his age should. Of course, planting your mothers namesake to try to keep her close wasn't how it worked, but who would care? Certainly not his father. Or her.
'You always loved my singing.' The thought wormed its way into Shiny's head before she could stop it. But now that it was there, she just... Couldn't fathom the energy to force it away. Not while she was out here alone, on her sweethearts birthday, with the cold rain and breeze as her band for the night, 'And I loved to sing for you... I'd give anything to sing for you again...'
But Poppy wasn't there to hear her sing anymore. It was no longer the same. Shiny had always thought that she sang for herself, which was partially true. But she found out the hard way too that she also needed someone to offer her voice to- something to sing about. But what?
...
"I was fine... With the men... Who would come into her life now and again..." It had been years since she had found it in herself to sing anything. Let alone whatever was on her mind. She somehow already knew what she was going to sing about before the words even left her lips, but right now, she couldn't care less, "I was fine... Cause I knew, that they didn't really matter... Until you." Her eyes narrowed into a spiteful glare, as she thought about that damn weasel inside the house now. She wanted to think of him as a homewrecker in all honesty. Though how could she when Poppy had never loved her the she had hoped she would?
A shaky breath, to try to calm her raging nerves. It was futile, but it was either try or just go all out and bat shit crazy in the rain. Shiny focused back on the flower, thinking back to all the stupid things Psycho and Shiny used to do to compete, "I was fine. When you came, and we fought like it was all some silly game... Over her."
Another crack in her voice. Another breath, "Who'd she choose..."
Shutting her eyes tightly, Shiny managed to tear her gaze away from the flower bed and lift her chin towards the cloudy night sky. Though it wasn't in pride, "After all those years, I never thought I'd lose..."
"It's over, isn't it?" It was, wasn't it? "Isn't it?" Now that she was never coming back, "Isn't it over?" After leaving behind so much, "You won. And she chose you. And she loved you. And she's gone..."
Only one thought crossed her mind as a droplet that wasn't from the current weather slipped down her cheek; if their silly little game was over now... "It's over, isn't it? Why can't I move on?"
~
Penelope felt restless, sitting upright in her bed and watching the rain pattering against her window intently, rather than laying down and trying to sleep. She always loved the rain. As long as she could remember. She especially loved it when it was a heavy downpour.
Though she was scared that mom's poppies would get ruined. Thankfully, dad was already on it, and had left real quick to make sure the garden had shelter for the night, "Percy?"
She didn't look her brothers way, but she could still hear the sleepy muddle in his voice. She didn't know how he was able to hunker diwn to bed so quickly, "Yeah?"
"Do you think mom liked the rain too?" Dad and unkle Wheezy had mentioned that their mother wasn't too fond of thunder a few times, but thunder and lightning were different... Maybe she had something in common with mom.
Finally tearing her gaze away from the window, Penelope looked over to the other side of the room, where Percival, in his own bed, was. The little weasel rubbed his eyes and blinked them into focus before he shrugged, "Maybe... Dad likes the rain, and they did a lot together. So she probably did."
"Yeah. That's right..."
Penny nodded, though Percival noticed how she looked to be frowning. He sighed, knowing exactly what she was thinking. It was something they both thought about, especially on days like this. How everyone they knew got to know their mother... Except each other.
Wordlessly, the kit crawled out of his bed and walked over to his sisters side of the room. He did hop on the bed with her, but he did reach over to hug her, which she returned silently. Neither of them spoke a word. They were young, but they still knew each other best.
"... I'm gonna get a glass of water." Penny decided after a moment, pulling away from the sibling embrace and sliding off of her bed easily. Percy decided to follow her. It sounded like they could use a drink- as their unkle Smarty would say.
The trip to the kitchen was relatively short. It wasn't even too bad when they had to get creative to reach the glasses in the cupboard; usually, dad got the cups down for them, but he wasn't around. So Penny just climbed onto the counter like she had seen dad do sometimes and passed down her brother the cups. They had done this trick a lot, much to their family's detriment.
Percival could only hear the rain pouring down onto the roof. Though he was reminded that he wasn't the twin that inherited their mothers hearing when Penelopes ears twitched and tilted towards a direction. He followed confusedly after her when she started walking towards the front door, "What is it?"
The rabbit child's ears were pointed toward the door, before her bright blue eyes widened, and she hopped onto the couch closest to the front window. Percy followed suit, searching for whatever it was that she heard. When he saw the familiar figure sitting on the porch, his eyebrows shot up to his forehead, "Shiny?"
"She was supposed to go home, right?"
The two shared a look. Silently asking the other the same question; listen? Or go back to bed?
...
In that secret language only siblings could understand, the two agree to creep back towards the front door and crack it open. Just a tad; not enough for Shiny to hear them, buy enough for them to listen to what she was saying.
Or rather, singing, "Shiny can sing??"
"Shh!"
Lucky for the twins, the rain was loud enough in Shiny's ears to block out any other sound. Honestly it was a wonder she hadn't gone deaf from countless night in the past dancing along loud bands... Her heart ache might have had a hand in her lack of focus now, too.
The weasel gritted her teeth and tugged at some hair strands- which was getting wetter by the minute. Including her clothes and fur. But she just couldn't give a damn now. Besides, it allowed her to pretend that the tears streaming down her cheeks were just raindrops, "Who am I now in this world without her!? Petty and dull with the nerve to doubt her..."
Poppy was always naive; she always wanted and hoped for the best in this wretched world. But that didn't mean she was dumb. Poppy had faced her own suffering in her life, and she always looked out for the people around her, no matter how awful they truly were. The way she treated her criminal friends, how she treated her, was proof of that. Shiny knew that she could always trust the rabbit because of it. And that was what made Poppy stand out to her out of everyone in her life, and what she had loved the most about her.
But nowadays... She still loved Poppy, and she loved the twins. But sometimes, Shiny wondered what would have happened if she had tried to discourage Poppy from more of the choices she had made. Would it have been worth being more controlling if it meant Poppy would be alive now?
The singer shook her head at that, knowing in her heart that that kind of thinking was wrong. Besides, it's not like it would change anything, so what was the point? "What does it matter? It's already done. Now I've got to be there for her kin..."
From the front door, Penny and Perry couldn't believe their ears, and even shared a look. As if they had to verify with the other that what they were hearing was really real. Their aunt had always told them that she and their mother were close, but she never said anything about this. She never looked this sorrowful talking about their mom. She was always so cheery and strong; had she been hiding this from them all along? "Percy...?"
Their shared thoughts stopped in their tracks when Percy noticed Shiny standing up from the porch, and quickly gestured to his sister. The kits ducked behind the door, just in case she had planned on going back inside, or was about to glance behind her. They stayed there, holding their breaths, until they heard their godmother's voice again. Louder, almost yelling, and more strained this time. Like she was cracking under the weight of what she said next, "It's over, isn't it!? Isn't it!? Isn't it over!?"
They both flinched from their hiding spots, feeling the pain that Shiny carried through her voice. They slowly peeked back outside once they deemed it safe, and could see Shiny now stood up from the porch and off the steps, standing fully in the pouring rain now. It was hard to see with how dark it was, but it looked like she was trembling even. All Penny and Percy could do was continue to listen. It was all they knew what to do now.
The weasel felt like she was going to crack under the weight of all her pent-up emotions. Her breath huffing out all shaky and fists clenched so tight by her sides. She felt so weak right now, on her own, but all she wanted was to scream and shout and punch a pillow. Or better yet, a wall. Her vision felt blurry, and not just because of the tears in her eyes, and she wasn't even thinking about all of the painful memories like before. Right now, even though it felt so hard to do, all she could do was take in one long breath, and scream into the sky with all the heartbreak that she had pushed down all these years, "You won, and she chose you! And she loved you! Now she's gone!"
...
That's it. There was no turning back now. She couldn't take it back now. Or fault the ears of anyone who may have been listening. Blinking away raindrops and tears, as if that final scream had taken her voice, all Shiny could manage now was a soft, pained tune, "It's over, isn't it? Why can't I move on...?"
Quiet sobs escaped her lips as her head fell, now staring at the muddy ground. Her shoulders shook with her crying, but that didn't stop her from wrapping her arms around herself, trying to find some way to find warmth and comfort now, "It's over, isn't it? Why can't I move on?"
Letting out everything she had locked away didn't help in the slightest; all it left was cold emptiness. At least, that's what it felt like now. At least no one was here to see her like this...
"Shiny?"
Her eyes grew wide, and a gasp escaped her before she whipped back around towards the doorway. Seeing the two she had hoped would never see this side of her was bad enough, but seeing the utter confusion and worry on the twins' faces, worry they shouldn't have to feel for her, made her heart sink even further than it had. How much did they hear? "O-Oh! Hey, guys... Shouldn't you be asleep...?"
Usually, the kids would have some witty excuse, or at least what they thought was clever, and act innocent. It would make Shiny laugh every time before she called them out on their mischief and sent them back on the right path- doing whatever it was they were supposed to be doing. But now? Stepping fully outside and onto the porch in their pajamas, Penny and Percy didn't answer her. At least not with words. Though the many questions that they didn't ask- or didn't even know where to start- were clear as day in their wide, sad eyes.
They heard it all. Or at least enough. Enough where she couldn't make up a lie to distract them. Not that that would have stopped them. They were persistent little kits.
And now, because she couldn't keep a damn lid on herself, wasn't strong enough to keep it together, Shiny had no choice but to reveal the complete truth, "... I... Kids, I..."
But where does one even start?
~
I really wanted to add Psycho's reaction as well. But I couldn't figure out how to write it in while making it flow with the story. I'm kinda afraid that adding the twins in this already jumbled the flow of the drabble a bit- but I haven't written them yet, and wanted to try 😅
He is in the backyard, so I don't know if he could even hear her sorrow... Though maybe he came back inside last minute?
But anyways! I hope you like this answer, and I apologize for taking so long XD let me know what you think! ^^

So...about the boys in Wednesday...Let's be honest they aren't that great. But i kinda think that's the point. Obviously, spoilers ahead.
Disclaimer: I was not in this fandom before yesterday so I love Enid but i don't ship her with Wednesday. Completely fair if you do but personally i don't dig that dynamic for a romantic pairing and i think Enid is too good for Wednesday 😭 I really thought we'd have more Bianca x Wednesday but alas
Now the "Love Triangle", was it is even one?
Let me start with Xavier. Besides the tortured artist boy being a least favorite trope of mine (ironic considering i am this trope) he just didn't have much depth. He doesn't get along with his dad, he's rich, popular, into Wednesday. What else? He's obsessed with Wednesday. Like i know he can't help seeing her in his dreams but the way he goes about his interest in her is icky and not in the fun way. Xavier is Bianca's ex bf (side note: can we get more Bianca love pls?) And broke up with her bc he felt she was hypnotizing him. Which is ironic considering he asks her to make him forget about Wed. Glad the show touched on how not cool that was.
Other than him just not really having much depth, he is also the "love interest" and i use the term loosely that Wednesday is the least interested in. She only ever entertains either boy when she has an ulterior motive (which y'know girl slay gas keep), but Xavier really never had a shot and I hope the end scene was more them becoming friends than anything bc imo they had negative chemistry. Wednesday doesn't care about Xavier's feelings. She doesn't care about his warnings. He is just of no importance to her until he seems like the killer. I really hope they give Xavier a glow up and keep them as just friends, we need more m&f friendships that don't turn romantic.
One to the other (more successful) love interest. Tyler.
Now i didn't put love interest in quotes this time bc he actually got a kiss. Lemme make this clear, Wednesday would have never gone along with Thing's shenanigans if she was interested in Tyler. She would have never gone on the date or kissed him if she didn't want to. Of the two dudes, Tyler is imo the only real love interest of s1. Xavier is just some guy who likes her. Tyler may or may not have been into Wednesday but she was into him. If you disagree with any of this that's fair but i think we watched different shows idk. Wednesday was definitely into Tyler in the end, but was he into her? Was any of it genuine or was it all an act? Idk for Wednesday Addams, i think a manipulative monster is probably her dream guy just saying
With that established, I need to admit that Tyler is my preferred love interest. Now lemme explain before you run away, Tyler is a manipulative POS but that's exactly why he's great for Wednesday. She's an Addams, they are a family full of manipulators, criminals, and altogether twisted people. Yet at the same time they're lovable and loyal to each other. Wednesday canonically tortures her brother, she's not called toxic for no reason, she's the most malicious Addams we know. Even Fester is mostly just a goof, a murderous goof but still. With the caveat of Tyler getting a redemption arc in next season, i can totally see the show overlooking his murders bc we still don't really know what being a Hyde entails and like i said, the Addams don't seem to care if you killed or kill people, just don't wear pastels. And honestly it's a bad look to just cast aside the traumatized, abused, and neglected kid as evil and leave it at that. With our protagonist being who she is, i hope the writers give Tyler some more screentime bc i can really see him being a great rival/frenemy to Wednesday and personally i think if she does get a romance, enemies to lovers is probably the best trope for her.
If you made it this far, damn sorry you did that to yourself. If you're a wenclair girlie, I'm rooting for you but it's just not my cup of tea tho I'd love to be proven wrong in subsequent seasons

When I say Bylers are misinterpreting what is happening in the narrative and overstating stuff on the show, and making stuff up in the process... I mean that they go by fanon and ignore the canon narrative. I do think Byler is endgame. I myself am a Byler shipper. However, I also think most Bylers' takes are all wrong or heavily misinterpreted. And honestly? They are consistently being disproven by canon on the show. People's takes regarding El were all wrong. She still has feelings for Mike and wasn't angry with him, she was thinking about Max at the cabin scene. The expectation for her to just break up with Mike and for Mlvn to end quickly in the next season is baseless and sounds very hilarious if we go by canon instead of fanon.
I don't think this situation is as complicated as ppl are making out to be. The most likely scenario is that El will potentially break up with Mike in EP4 or later on, and they will realize that they are incompatible in their relationship, and over the time we will see Mike and Will getting closer and then entering a relationship by the end of the show in the last episode. And while I would want Mike to have an explored and explicit sexuality and coming of age storyline, I feel like that is more envisioned and will happen in Will's narrative specifically as the Duffers also talked about. While Mike's is more about realizing his self worth and choosing to be with Will bc he realizes he loves Will and they're more compatible to be together, and the painting is also used as a plot device for Mike to realize that because Will later on decides to admit the truth to Mike and Mike accepts Will's feelings and realizes he also feels the same and they're fit for each other.
I feel like the fandom is really overstating/misinterpretating what is happening with Byler/Mlvn and that's the reason why their theories are either falling apart by the canon narrative, or getting disproven by the show.
Misinterpretation is always a possibility, but I disagree that Bylers are “making stuff up.” For the most part, Byler theories, even the arguably “out there” ones come from careful analysis and a genuine response to what is shown on screen. I wouldn’t say Bylers are ignoring the canon narrative because I think most Byler analysts are trying to genuinely engage with the canon narrative. With regards to the popular theory that El was mad with Mike, this wasn’t pulled out of thin air but by watching the show. I mean, she genuinely doesn’t look happy with Mike, and her being done with him or no longer having feelings for him would have been consistent with her previous actions as well. So it wasn’t crazy.
But yes, it’s an interpretation. And I agree that The Piggyback script threw a monkey wrench into that interpretation. The thing about interpretations is that they can be wrong. Based on the script, you’re right that it does seem like El still has feelings for Mike and wasn’t mad with Mike about the monologue but about losing. I do still find this concerning, not in terms of Mike’s character necessarily, but in terms of El’s character. I’ve already shared my thoughts on this matter. I’m concerned about character regression. (However, it’s important to note that things in Stranger Things do often change from script to how things are portrayed on screen. I’m still of the belief that in terms of the monologue scene and its aftermath, some things still aren’t adding up. But we’ll see in Season 5).
A lot of Bylers were of the opinion that El and Mike were gonna completely break up in the first episode and that maybe they already broke up secretly off screen during the missing time. I think this is largely due to our desire to see our boys 😉 get together as quickly as possible. But that was never really my position. I think they wanna drag out the love triangle as much as possible for angst/drama, and there still are a lot of shoes to drop such as the painting lie.
You mention that you don’t think this situation is as complicated as people are making it out to be, and that is certainly possible. Your thoughts on what will happen with Byler/Mlleven are a possibility for sure. But I actually think this approach would be more complicated. Most of the general audience is still convinced that Mike is exclusively straight and could never ever be gay or bi or queer in any way. Many of them also don’t like Mike’s character anymore due to his confusing actions in Season 3 and 4. We know better, but the easiest way to explain both of these things is to get inside his head. I really really hope Mike gets Vecnaed, and while it’s not a certainty, I still think there’s lots of evidence for it within the text of the show. If we don’t get into his head, if the problem with Migration Pattern is just incompatibility and nothing more, it raises so many questions and doesn’t really explain anything about Season 3 and 4. And coupled with the love confession monologue, if we operate under the assumption that Mike wasn’t lying at all, it also comes dangerously close to Will being basically a second option. And I don’t think that’s the message we really want the show to convey.

Royal Trio for that character asks?
ahh ty! this is literally perfect timing because I just finished the third semester on my third playthrough of p5r and really wanted to talk about these three <this is a lie. I stopped writing out the answer to this ask over a month ago but this ask IS still relevant bc I am now writing a royal trio-centric fic. so I'd still like to talk about them.
describe their canon relationship/dynamic
Sumi and Akira have a very strong dynamic, as Sumi is basically Akira's canonical love interest and one of his closest friends. And I needn't explain how Akira and Akechi have an extremely strong dynamic as well.
But the three of them don't really have that strong of a trio dynamic because the triangle breaks when we get to Akechi and Sumi's relationship with each other, which is a shame. Either Akechi or Sumi feel a bit left out because Sumi's in the dark about so much of Akechi's Deal and Akechi is so outwardly cold to Sumi. So they don't have much of a dynamic with each other.
your ideal/headcanon version of it? how does it differ from how it is in canon & why is this your favorite version? any other alternate versions of it you enjoy?
My ideal version of the royal trio has two main differences between it and the canon version. First, Akechi and Sumi never get the chance to bond in canon. I don't think that it's a flaw, necessarily, because there was no way to have them bond without breaking Akechi's character arc in the third sem. But it is a huge missed opportunity.
I really do think Akechi does secretly care for Sumi, but he doesn't want to show it because he's being Stupid in third sem about wanting to push everyone away. I think in any other timeline they could have been friends, and I think that he realizes their similarities and relates to her because of them. In the same way, if Sumi knew more about Akechi I think she would relate to him and want to be his friend too.
The second thing I'd change is make Sumi and Akira's relationship platonic. This isn't really a "change" since you can reject her, and Sumi having a crush on its own is perfectly fine. But they push them as a romantic pairing really really hard, much harder than anyone else, to the point where its pretty obvious she's supposed to be your canonical girlfriend. And I just don't like that, since them getting together kinda breaks Sumi's character arc of self discovery.
what do you like about their relationship, why is it interesting or enjoyable to you?
I love how Sumi and Akechi both complement Akira in opposite directions. But more than that, I'm obsessed with how Sumi and Akechi are thematic foils in pretty much every way. Others have written metas on this so I won't repeat it all here, but the sheer Potential of Akechi and Sumi's dynamic and the way their arcs parallel is so Interesting. Sumi and Akechi are such different people, but they are also so extremely similar, and its just. mmmm. good. makes brain go brrr.
I could go on and on about the ways Sumi and Akechi parallel one another, but one thing in particular that sticks out to me are their masks and the way each of them deal with their self hatred in opposite directions. Sumi buries her true personality and becomes her ideal self as Kasumi. Meanwhile Akechi does something similar with the Detective Prince persona, but by the third semester he's completely rejected that part of himself. Sumi learns to reconcile all parts of herself, while Akechi. doesn't. And Akira serves as Akechi's other half, the way that Kasumi served as Sumire's other half. But while Sumi saw Kasumi's natural talent, and how she outshone her in every way, she internalized that hatred to the point where she wished to die. But when Akechi saw how Akira was superior to him in every way, he externalized that hate and tried to kill Akira to prove that he was better. Sumi accidentally kills Kasumi because of her self hatred, and Akechi tries to kill Akira but fails because of his self hatred.
what about the individual characters involved? what does this relationship mean to them, what makes it unique among their relationships?
Akira - Sumi and Akechi are his closest friends, imo. Akira sees a lot of himself in both of them. They're the Fake As Hell Gang, each of them hiding behind various masks to conceal their true, inner self.
Sumi - Akira is the person who helps Sumi rediscover her true self and accept herself for who she truly is instead of continuing to hide behind her sister's identity. She looks up to his as a version of her ideal self, confident and self assured and fully realized. As for Akechi, I don't think Sumi has any idea what to make of him at all.
Akechi - I could go on for days about the complexities of Akechi's feelings about Akira, but in short, Akira is Akechi's only real friend in the world, and yet they were once bitter enemies. Akechi wishes it could stay that simple--rivals, and nothing more. But of course that's not true. As for Sumi, he sees a lot of himself in her--someone terrified that they aren't good enough, idolizing someone else as their better half. But he can't let himself get attached, so he keeps his distance and remains harsh on the surface no matter his sympathies.
favorite interaction they have in canon
"Just everyday Akechi." Obviously.
favorite interaction they have in your head/a situation you want to put them in
well. i mean, if you'll pardon the self promo, you can find out by reading the aforementioned fic where sumi saves goro in the engine room. hehe

You said that the old Saint Tail translations got the story wrong and made the ending say the opposite of what it actually meant, what do you mean by that? If I rewatch the series with the new TL, what would be different about it?
I apologize for what's probably going to be a much longer and more rambly answer than you were hoping for, but I really do feel this needs to be covered thoroughly and carefully, so please bear with me! I can only say so much about what it would be like for someone who's known the series for a long time, but all of our QCers for the retranslation (all of whom had never been exposed to the series beforehand) had no problem understanding the story themes without needing an explanation and were mortified when they heard what the older translations had turned the series into, so there is definitely a huge difference.
The problem boils down to the premise of the series itself. From what I understand, most descriptions of the series in English (including official English summaries) frame the series as involving Asuka Jr. being in love with St. Tail while ignoring Meimi, or even if they do acknowledge that it's mutual, they'll frame it as an "ironic love triangle" where he's torn between the two as if he has to pick one. I imagine this was what the translators themselves thought it was about, since they translated it this way as well. Neither of these are true at any point in the series, and Asuka Jr. has his own independent character arc and story that constitutes a whole half of the series plot and themes, but previous translations had nullified all of that by not handling his dialogue carefully. (I'd say it's exemplified by the fact that the word associated with him to the point it's almost an in-universe meme, donkan, was translated as things like "clueless" or "dingbat" as if he's a shallow idiot who lets everything go over his head, when in actuality the problem is that he's "dense" in that he's insensitive and struggles to understand others' feelings.)
The main gist of it is that Saint Tail is a series about exploring what it means to love someone in the sense of "someone being precious to you", and the role of the phantom thief chase in the plot doubles as both an allegory for their relationship and their outlet for bypassing their respective insecurities they have at school. For Asuka Jr. in particular, there's no room for doubt that he likes Meimi, but the problem is that he has a short temper and tends to say the wrong thing on impulse, making him come off as hostile to her and leaving him hesitant to approach her again because he keeps ruining everything. (This is stated directly in the Japanese Blu-ray booklet, and in fact, no Japanese summary has ever contradicted this nor have they supported the "ironic love triangle" reading.) But previous translations phrased his dialogue as actively insulting and removed most of the nuance regarding his feelings towards Meimi and St. Tail, then mistranslated the one line where he gets closest to clearly stating his actual motive for being involved in the case, thus making it so that the only possible interpretation is that he's shallowly acting out of romantic infatuation.
As for the final arc and ending, I'll put it under a spoiler cut:
One key factor about Asuka Jr.'s dialogue is that even in the beginning of the series, almost everything he says has a legitimate point behind it, and it's just not coming out in the right way. This is especially so in the anime, where his early dialogue lines lashing out at people for "not knowing anything about St. Tail" become important later when he really does turn out to be the only one who's putting any effort into understanding St. Tail's motives and feelings. While Meimi interprets his initial statements as "only caring about St. Tail and not her," he's being completely serious when he complains that people don't respect St. Tail enough, and him demanding that Meimi show St. Tail more respect in episode 12 is, in a sense, him saying that Meimi needs to respect herself more. So when you get to the final arc, it turns out that he was right the whole time: Meimi is engaging in some serious self-neglect, and being loved in the way she wants means being loved as St. Tail is a required component that she can't ignore.
Since everything relevant to Asuka Jr.'s side of the story wasn't handled properly in prior translations, the problem becomes a chain reaction that makes the entire final arc into a series of nonsensical contradictions. If Asuka Jr. says that St. Tail is his dream girl like he's infatuated with her, then decides she "looks like" Meimi despite saying only one line later that he doesn't mean it in a physical sense, then his conclusion about how his feelings regarding St. Tail/Meimi changed after seeing her in Princess Rosa's mirror doesn't make sense either. If all of the references to him feeling frustrated about not knowing how to help Meimi are taken out, the meaning of "...that my hand can reach you" also becomes null (and the fact the Tokyopop manga translation interpreted it as "that I can touch you" really gets me to feel that the translation team didn't understand the story at all). If the parts about him already suspecting St. Tail's identity and wanting to "find" her in an intellectual sense are taken out, his reason for taking Meimi to Pandora (when he distrusts fortune-telling) and his resulting reaction to Maju's prophecy don't make sense either...and so on and so forth.
Naturally, this eventually leads to him "catching" her in the finale losing most of its meaning besides being an ironic play on him having formerly been charged with arresting her, especially because both translations still kept translating "tsukamaeru" as "capture" or "arrest" even when arresting her stopped being his motive. To make things worse, the old anime translation ends on the note of the adult Asuka "taking work from" the police as if he's carrying all the burdens on himself the same way St. Tail did in the past, the opposite of the actual implication that he's "taking credit from the police" by resolving all of the cases but still getting everyone to participate instead of letting someone suffer the same fate of becoming a figurehead. And for things like the reason the calling cards are called "love letters" or the meaning of the "everlasting promise" mentioned at the end, all of the English-language descriptions I'd seen floating around were making terribly strained reaches at what they were supposed to mean, but all of the QCers got it instantly with the new translation...meaning it should be straightforward and easy-to-understand, but wasn't because the old translations had removed everything that got it to make sense.

How’d you like the show?! I agree it was very differnt I consider them two different pieces of media myself
I think the changes suited the show but I find it a shame that two of my favorite camila scenes were cut or lacked the impact they had in the book :,)
Oh oh anon get ready for a rant! My thoughts about differences film vs book:
Okay so far I'm liking the show because I'm seeing it as a total different thing, but overall I wouldn't say that the show is better whatsoever, and most of the changes just don't make sense regarding the story of the book.
One of the things is that the book READS like a show, like a false documentary, and I think it would have been so interesting to maintain the main aspects of it: the unreliability, the shorter scene cuts (can we talk about Warren's obsession with Karen fucking Bones?! And how I was laughing every time he came up with it and then Graham kept like telling how he was fucking Karen?) and, overall, the severity in which they spoke all the time. The book had you hooked not because you knew it would end badly (how the series puts it) but because you didn't know the truth. I truly don't understand how you have a great base material for a show and you don't stick to it. Even in said dialogues... The dialogues in the book are just BETTER. Use them!
What they did to some characters doesn't make sense to me, or it's another series completely. Getting rid of Pete, although Pete just gives his version at the end (I actually thought, in the book, that he had died before giving the interview, similarly to Chuck) makes sense in a casting point of view but, again, it diminishes the resentment the band has towards those days. The relationship between Graham and Karen doesn't feel organic: why does Carol appear? In the book, Graham and Karen know each other A LONG TIME before Karen develops feelings, and it's not because she is suddenly jealous. God, that is... just not Karen! Karen who always wants to be an assured woman, who really calls the shots... To fall into this cliché again... Also: Eddie. Why, why is he in love with Camilla? For God's sake, it's easy enough to hate Billy! In the book, I hated Billy too. But in the show, they put him like the two goody-shoes, talented front man who messes up constantly and yes, okay, he's a little bit narcissistic BUT in the book he is INCREDIBLY narcissistic and that's why Eddie can't stand him. What they did to Camilla... I am raging. Camilla is the mother SUPERIOR in the book. She is caring and understanding but also not afraid of anything, and similarly to Karen, she calls the shots the majority of the time. I feel like they got rid of so many Camilla scenes in which she says that she chooses this path with Billy but Billy also chooses this path with Camilla. Their love in the book is not romantic, is not a triangle, because Billy knows what's at stake and doesn't want to lose it. And Daisy—Daisy was already famous when she met The Six. Everyone in LA knew her, being it for the night scene or for her music. I really liked that the stardom of Daisy in the book was much more organic in how she opened for The Six before joining the band. In having her like "a wonder" they diminished her perseverance and her hard work. They also made her (and Billy) less of an addicts, or they don't really show that part, and I felt like I was just watching two egos without the addiction, which I feel is one of the topics of the book.
But the worse, for me, was how they change the message of the book in the film... The book talks about perseverance: in love, in staying clean, in music, in your job. I love the way Billy refuses to be with Daisy in the book because he doesn't want to mess up what he has with Camilla, because he loves Camilla and wants to be a good father. He's a character with strong ideals that despises his own childhood and knows how difficult it was for him and Graham, so he does everything possible to not be the same. Similarly for Daisy, her childhood was horrible until she started writing music. Her love for Billy doesn't come of romantic love, but it's the first time that someone sees her for what she really is—a talented, worthy individual—and Billy portrays this kind of admiration because he is also good. Daisy, in the book, doesn't fit into the band. They are not the "found family" I felt they were in the series, and that's alright, because Daisy is not looking for another family, she's looking for a profession that dignifies her. By changing Billy and Daisy's relationship in the show—and I think I spoilt myself the ending, which enraged me further—they completely changed the message and the theme and they made it a show about LOVE. And the book is not about LOVE! The show felt Hollywood for me. The book, the main thing I liked from it, is that it wasn't. It's so human. It's so—"job". It talks about job, music, passion and the ways it makes us horrible and we try to keep it up. It doesn't talk about a man who falls in love with a co front-man but they are bad for each other and they choose not to stay together, oh, two flames burning! Even all of the other characters have the "love" theme revolving around them (Eddie and Camilla, Karen and her jealousy, SIMONE AND BERNIE!). Can't we just... can't we just appreciate friendship and professional connections without implying that all that happens is because of romantic love? Gosh!
So, too long to read: I like the series and the book because they read differently. But I would never, ever for a life, tell someone to just see the series. The book is amazing, intelligent, witty, mature. The series are some romance series. Which is fine if you're looking for romance, but not if you're looking for the topics in the series.
how did you like it??? i'm open to discussion because it has been my hyperfixation these last few days!

Not on the ask meme, but I have a question. What ships are you not interested in writing?
Tumblr media
Oh, you are just trying to get me in trouble, aren't you? 🫣🫣🫣
All my answers will be Hinata-centric because that is what I write, and just because I won't write *it does not mean I hate the couple or the characters* I just personally am not interested in writing it.
Tumblr media
NaruHina - From time to time, I have Naruto on the failing end of the love triangle, but as the main ship, I will never do it. It's cannon and that makes it a bit uninteresting. It can be cute, but it's not really the dynamic I like to write. I also just really struggle to write Naruto as a character. I am not really sure why. I think I like him better as a well-meaning friend or an unaware antagonist. Just a past crush, something to grow up from. - I need to write a fic were they group up really close friends. I haven't done something like that yet.
NejiHina - I know a lot of people like it. I wouldn't bring it up if I didn't hadn't made requests for it. I have a lot of cousins, ones I was raised closely with and ones I wasn't. I just can't get over the family aspect. It gives me the personal ick. I don't judge anyone for shipping it tho, it's a show not real people. I love them being close brother and sister vibes.
Any Teacher x Hinata - Same as NejiHina. I personally can't get over the teacher of a child growing up to a relationship with them. I can't turn off the real world ick off in my brain. It's possible I just watch too much true crime content. I tend to completely forget most of the teachers in my writing anyway.
KibaHina - I sometimes have Kiba have one-sided love toward Hinata, but it's the dynamic again. I like them better as friends.
ShinoHina - This is a maybe. For most of the chill vibes, my brain would just go to Shikamaru, but Shino could get a one-shot someday if someone requested something that I found interesting enough.
Tumblr media
*One last reminder.* If you like any of these ships, I do not care. Do you. I know most people look at me sideways for mine. I mean KisaHina and HidaHina or weird as shit.
