It was starting to sink in that for the rest of my life, the people I met, the people I became close to—there would always be a chance that they saw me as a payout.

April has been such a great reading month for me. I think I’ve read almost 12 books this month? Which doesn’t seem real but I guess it is. So here’s what I read in April:

All Hail The Underdogs 5⭐️ {review}
Power Plays & Straight A’s 4⭐️ {review}
Foster In New York 4⭐️
Delinquent Daddy & Tender Teacher vol 1 4⭐️ {review}
The Foxhole Court 5⭐️ {review}
The Raven King 5⭐️ {review}
Mad Man 5⭐️ {review}
Mad Man bonus epilogue 5⭐️
Swamp Thing Twin Branches 4⭐️ {review}

My favorite books this month were the All For The Game books. This reread was so good! It brought back so many memories and little things that I’d forgotten about them.

My April Reads
(‼️IF YOU WANT ME TO REMOVE YOUR FIC FROM HERE FOR ANY REASON PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I REVIEW BOOKS BUT ONLY PRAISE FICS.‼️)
————————————————————————
Books:
Babel: An Arcane History by R.F. Kuang
I was hesitant about this book because I know it was relatively popular on booktok and that alone is enough to scare me off most times. I am also not a big fantasy person, but after reading it I think magical realism would be a more accurate classification - the magic fits in with the real world perfectly, serving as a stand in and allegory for other scientific and technological advancements. I am very glad I did read it because I truly am just absolutely floored by this book. It builds such a sense of friendship among the characters, it makes you love them, and it forces you to see things through their eyes. The anticipation is incredible, and the stakes are so high, I genuinely had to take breaks because I was getting overwhelmed (this is not a flaw I am just autistic, excitable, and easily overwhelmed). R. F. Kuang is a genius. Highly, highly recommend for historical fiction lovers, linguistics lovers, and for a story of empire from a non-white view. 5/5 Stars.
————————————————————————
Misc Lit:
I read through all of the submissions featured for the March prompt (Runaway) on Dakota Warren’s literary arts journal Nowhere Girl Collective
My favourites are:
Essay: Kudzu Kids by Megan
Essay: A Letter to These Kids That Ain’t Mine by Elio
Poem: Views of a Civil War From The Other Side of The World by Minerva
Poem: Amber - Crackling by Alice D.
Fiction: To Unbecome God by Mercy Grey
————————————————————————
One Shots:
Paper Birds
This was very cute. I love Sirius in this so so much and Remus is adorable.
safe with you by @hiddenmoonbeam
They’re actually the sweetest little guys ever, I love this so much.

April Reads 📖📖
Fourth Wing (The Empyrean #1) by Rebecca Yarros - 3.5/5
Hate Mate by Donna Marchetti - 3/5
Broken Bonds (The Bonds that Tie #1) by J.Bree- 4/5
Savage Bonds (The Bonds that Tie #2) J.Bree- 4/5
Funny Story by Emily Henry - 5/5
Blood Bonds (The Bonds that Tie #2) J.Bree- 4/5
Fourth Wing nearly took me out with how long the chapters are but I still enjoyed it and plan to read Iron Flame just to see what's going on. The Bonds that Tie has me by the throat and I'm SO entertained with and very happy my curiosity got the better of me haha (@cassianandfenrysaremyboyos great job accidentally influencing me to read it lmao). Funny Story was a highly anticipated read for me and it did not disappoint! I loved every second of it!

Read in April 2024:
The Key To Deceit (Electra McDonnell #2) by Ashley Weaver -> audiobook 🗝️ ☆☆☆☆
This Nonviolent Stuff’ll Get You Killed by Charles E. Cobb Jr. ⛓️‍💥 ☆☆☆½
Crossings by Alex Landragin 🪬 ☆☆☆
Playing It Safe (Electra McDonnell #3) by Ashley Weaver -> audiobook 🌊 ☆☆☆☆
No 5 star reads this month sadly. I was a bit disappointed by Crossings, which had an absolutely brilliant concept, almost a puzzle box of a novel (it can be read straight through as 3 loosely connected short stories, or read in a specific page order that jumps around to make one complete novel) and a fascinating premise but left me feeling zero emotional connection or sympathy for literally any of the characters.
Even though its writing felt a bit repetitive at times, it was incredibly enlightening to read This Nonviolent Stuff’ll Get You Killed about the gun culture and need for self defense and defense of those practicing nonviolence surrounding the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s - a piece of history I had never heard anything about before. And it was quite satisfying to finally get to the book that’s been on my TBR the longest - since 2019!
Finally, the wonderful thing about not doing any specific reading challenges this year is that I’ve had the time to reread several favorites and finish more books in those series (like the rest of the Winternight Trilogy after rereading The Bear and the Nightingale). I’d wanted to reread A Peculiar Combination and The Key To Deceit last year before the third Electra McDonnell book, Playing It Safe, came out, but I was so tied up in trying to do so many prompts I never got around to it. Now I’ve caught up on the series and only have to wait a couple more weeks before book 4, Locked in Pursuit, comes out. (side note: how cute are those series covers!)
I have to admit, becoming an audiobook listener at work comes with new challenges. Like being up on an 8 foot ladder spreading fireproofing caulk with my earbuds in when the two lead characters FINALLY kiss after almost 3 whole books… and trying not to have a whole face journey about it in case anyone walks by 😂.
… that being said, I would LOVE more audiobook recommendations with delicious slow burn sexual tension! I’m here for the emotional escapism from the construction site 😎

April Reads 📚
The Serpent and the Wings of Night (Crowns of Nyaxia #1) by Carissa Broadbent - 4.5/5
Six Scorched Roses (Crowns of Nyaxia #1.5) - 5/5
The Ashes and Star-Cursed King (Crowns of Nyaxia #2) - 4.5/5
*Beach Read by Emily Henry - 5/5
*People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry - 4.5/5
Absolutely loved every book I've read this month! It's taking me longer than usual to read books because I'm just tired all the time but still fighting through lol. The Crowns of Nyaxia series has been hella fun and I definitely recommend it! It's been a while since I've read fantasy and I'm so happy it was this one. The author's writing style is so good and kept me engaged. I'm planning to read her other works too. Rereading Beach Read and PWMOV was just so so good. It had me in my feels. I'm planning to start my reread of Book Lovers today and then get to Happy Place. I hear lots of tears are in order for that last one and I am ready :')
*marked for rereads

Was April slow for anyone else, or just me?
April was pretty slumpy for me. I worked a lot and when I have busy work months I tend to read less because I'm exhausted. I started one physical book, but quickly lost interest. The two traditional books I read were via audio to and from my parents' house for a semi-spontaneous weekend trip.
A huge thanks to @bookwormextraordinaire for recommending This, You Protect by owlet on ao3. I had the absolute BEST time reading it and if you're at all a Stucky shipper/fan, please read it! I plan to read the rest of the Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail series.

My April reads! How is it already May tomorrow? My favorite of the month was “True Love Experiment” by Christina Lauren. I got an ARC from the publisher on Netgalley but it comes out in May. It’s a great sequel or continuation to their “Soul Mate Equation.” Very smart, funny and hot 🥵!
