"Research is formalized curiosity"...
Tumblr media
More and more, I'm realizing that not everyone is wired with a curious mind like mine. I often wonder about the "whys" about something. It's not unusual for me to get consumed for days or months thinking about the "why" or "how" of something--but I had assumed that this was how most people proceeded with a curiosity.
Imagine my surprise when I gradually realized (very recently, actually) that I'm actually in the minority, and not the majority. My mind, seemingly, is often an outlier--far away from the normal cluttered data points of reserved thoughts and commonplace musings. Surprisingly, it has helped me to see and understand things better. I've always wondered why I always seem more affected by little things in life than others, and now I understand why.
It maybe exhilaratingly exhausting at times, but I simply don't know how to, or want to, tame who I am.
This makes those I've let into my thoughts, and those who have gotten to know me, even more special to me. Specifically those who aren't scared away by my haphazardly odd, passionate, curious, and random mind.
I always think that I couldn't get nerdier, weirder, or more passionate....and then I go proving myself wrong again. Every time.
I mean, what fun would it be if I didn't? 🤣😉
Cheers 😘

Hiatus Announcement
Hi frens :(
So. As you've probably seen this week in my posts, I've mentioned that I'm starting my Masters program literally today, around my already extremely full-time job. I usually put in about 52 hours weekly, and now I'll be taking 6 credits at a time on top of that.
The truth is I don't know how this will affect my time here. Definitely, it will have to diminish. I don't know if that will be a lot or a little. I feel like some weeks will be better than others.
I still want to write. I still want to read and review. I still want to interact and shout in the tags and goof around with you all. I just truthfully don't know how it's going to look.
I take my academic success and my professional duties really seriously because capricorn. I also have to maintain a 3.5 gpa for financial aid. C's might get degrees, but they don't get tuition reimbursement.
I want things to stay the same here as much as I can and I'm going to try my best to make that happen. But please forgive me if I miss something of yours or if I stop posting new writing as frequently. I promise I'm not "gone", I promise I WANT to hear from you and interact with you so don't feel like you can't talk to me now, and I promise I want to be writing and posting - and I will whenever I can.
Love y'all.

Typing in two windows, and I’m not sure which would be funnier: putting a fully-cited post on the historigraphy of Gnostic Christianity into a tumblr reponse, or Dracula meta into a grad school discussion board.

In honor of hbomberguy's video...
I've found a youtube response to the hbomberguy video that isn't just content hunting/recuts! And doesn't seem to be a planned thing like Todd!
Mostly because this is an academic using the hbomberguy video as a jumping off point to talk to the camera, with few edits, about how to cite your sources.
Don't Be Like James Somerton: Advice on Citations and Plagiarism by Archaeology Tube
This is a very reasonable kind of thing to see a day or two after a big story hits. Not edited in a way that's super intensive, and clearly a lecture--too happy to be a rant, honestly--that the person has locked and loaded and has obviously thought about a lot... presumably because, as an academic, it's kind of super necessary.

Gentleness of The Sun
It's been a while since i've written something that isnt APA styled research papers for a grade. So hey! a Dogday/Zach (Angel) fic!
Tumblr media
It has been exactly 10 months since they've escaped the factory, 2 months since Dogday's...kind-of-sort-of confession, and exactly 1 hour ago since said toy dog fell asleep on his lap. Angel- or should I say, Zach, watched as the chest area of the dog raised up and down, signaling that he was breathing. The human sighs himself and takes his brown eyes towards the settling sun on the horizon, its gentle rays of light breaking into the river that they sat by.
It was a day of fun, he thinks, they had gone for a hike, with Dogday insisting to go to the river by his home, one thing led to another and they ended up drenched in water, laughing all the way back to shore, Zach had removed Dogday's jacket and hanged it to a branch to dry. The human thankfully was dry, but with the giant dog sleeping on his lap, he knew that the pants were probably damp. Not that he would complain, Dogday being able to sleep at all is a good sign that there was nothing bothering him.
He remembered when they first came to his home, how tired and weary everyone were. He remembers Kissy gently lowering Poppy down to the sofa, sitting down herself and looking around, she may have had that perpetual smiling face, but he knew she was anxious, that any minute now something awful would happen to this safe haven. He remembered how Poppy, grateful to be freed, still felt very much scared of asking to reach different places, to be able to be comfortable, through her semi cheerful facade he could see a scared (little?) girl.
Then there was Dogday.
The ex-leader was almost always on edge when they first arrived, every little sound he was startled by, the darkness of the forest unsettled him, and goodness gracious if a storm arrived? He would be caught hiding inside Zach's bedroom, clutching onto a pillow for some sort of comfort.
The worst would come when night came and it was time for bed.
The nightmares were the main opponent that prevented Dogday from sleeping, memories of that dreaded jailcell, of the mini critters attempting to eat him alive...
Catnap's inevitable death.
The poor toy had it rough, and it took a lot of time and patience from Zach to slowly get him to sleep. and even more patience and care for the leader to sleep on his own.
Zach snaps back from reminiscing as he's startled by Dogday's sleepy mumblings. He looked down at the sleeping figure and gently pets his fur, now warm and dry thanks to the settling sun, smiling as the dog seemed to lean into the touch more.
(He will think about the possibility that Dogday's touch starved for another day).
=================
Ya'll this was kinda cringe <333

BofB boys but them doing group presentation in modern college AU
Winters: teamed up with Nix, he did the slides.
Nixon: a witness said he did nothing but sitting there being beautiful but that’s not true he helped gathered the infos and went on stage to do the whole presentation
Speirs : teamed up with Lipton (who was the only one who asked him to team up with). He did the slides but the man with great skills of information briefing had terrible layout taste which lead to their first version of the slides end up with 24pt American typewriter font on blank white background.
Lipton : teamed up with Speirs. He tried to add cute icons on their slides to save it visually. Soft boy went 50/50 portion of the stage presentation with Speirs, which was a big relief for the audiences who found Speirs scary.
Luz : teamed up with Toye. Their slide is a emoji mayhem but dude’s presentation skill saved the day.
Toye : the one who could have save their slide from becoming emoji mayhem but too nice to spoil the fun.
Liebgott : he didn’t want to team up with Webster but he sold his soul to the grades. Had arguments with Webster with the slide’s topic, their debate was so loud that the librarian kicked them out.
Webster: “scholar boy” of the class which means he’s the party pooper rambling on academic things that nobody asks for knowing. Annoyed when Liebgott tried to stop him from putting literature memes that little would find funny on the slide. He insisted on doing the reference page with APA style.

How to Describe House of Leaves, an attempt by Me
it seems to make the most sense to treat it like an onion, and describe it from the innermost layer and branch outwards
it's about Will Navidson's film The Navidson Record. The Navidson Record is a kind of found footage autobiographical narrative about a filmmaker named Navidson and his family moving into a house that is much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, a haunting physical impossibility
but it's not about that, it's about Zampano, the man who wrote this dissertation on The Navidson Record. Zampano is a blind, old man who died in his apartment in an unremarkable way but leaves behind an eerie legacy, a collection of papers inside an old chest that looks like an APA-style dissertation on a horror film/documentary. this dissertation is filled with hundreds of quotes and citations from different sources, all included in great detail in the footnotes
oh, and it's all made up. the film. the citations. Will Navidson. it's all fake.
but it's not about that, it's about Johnny Truant, the man who found the chest full of papers in the old man's apartment, read them, and now is going insane because of it. or maybe not? Johnny feels like he's being stalked by some unknown horrific entity and is powerless to defend himself from it. he's got a fucked up past from two dead parents and a hell of a lot of stories that may or may not be true, and now he's got Zampano's work driving him to nightmares, and the nightmares following him throughout the day. he says as much in long, rambling footnotes of his own that exist beside Zampano's citations
but it's not even about that, it's about the fact that this is the fourth printed edition of this story, complete with colored text, 3 different appendixes, an index, and addition footnotes made by other Editors. this implies that either 1. previous editions existed that didn't have bonus content like that or 2. the author of this book, Mark Z. Danielewski wants you to think other versions of this book exist when they really don't
it's fiction that's like 10 levels deep and i got a headache just typing up that description. just wait til you see letter i just spent 45 minutes decoding

This dainty looking lady is called Jennifer. And this was what happened to Jennifer during her recent sem break.
Breaking up with her bf was what caused Jennifer to not go home for sem break. He was her ride back to her hometown and now last minute tickets were all too expensive. So Jennifer chilled in her room all day, and walked the deserted corridors to get her GrabFood. Unknowingly to her that there were 3 pairs of eyes monitoring her every move.
On the third day, Jennifer was strolling back to her room, eyes glued to Netflix on her phone. As she unlocked her room, she was pushed inside forcefully and gave a sharp scream. As she turned around, she found 3 Bangla security guards standing inside her room, closing and locking her door.
'Wha...apa you mau?? I scream wan ah..!!'
The guards smiled, pretended to look around and shook their heads. Their meaning is clear - you can scream but no one will hear. Just as Jennifer wanted to dash for the door, Guard 1 pulled up his phone to show Jennifer a video. A video of Jennifer getting fucked by her ex.
Jennifer screamed and reached for his phone, only for Guard 2 and 3 to pin her on her single bed by her arms. No matter how she struggled, the guards were too strong and soon they managed to strip her off her track pants and jersey top. It was a surprise when they saw Jennifer's naked body so soon. She didn't wear any bra or panties!
All 3 guards have their pants down within seconds, parading themselves in front of Jennifer, forcing her to look. All 3 cocks were dark brown, bushy and 7-8 inches long! Jennifer couldn't look away, her cheeks getting red.
'Fuckkk I like big lanciaoooo!!!'
All 3 guards smirked as they heard Jennifer screamed in the video. Jennifer tried to scream over the video but was gagged with Guard 2's underwear. The stench almost made Jennifer puke and this gave Guard 1 the opportunity to pry open her legs and forced her cock into her raw. Jennifer screamed and gagged violently as her pussy got violated by a Bangla cock. Guard 2 began to motorboat and lick Jennifer's boobs while while Guard 3 rubbed his cock leaking with pre-cum all over Jennifer's face. Jennifer only could softly rejected them while trying to stop herself from enjoying being raped.
Alas, her body betrayed her, as 3 cocks of sizable length and girth took turns drilling her. Jennifer started moaning and moaning, while tears time down her cheeks. She shook her head no, but her hands were stocking the other 2 cocks, priming them for another fuck.
Guard 3 propped Jennifer on all fours and fucked her doggy style. While in this position, Guard 1 fed Jennifer his cock and she obediently took it into his mouth, no more minding about the smell. The 2 guards spit roasted her for a few more minutes and blew their load into her. Jennifer wanted to protest but was too weak with all the pounding she took.
Guard 2 positioned himself behind her, teasing his cock on Jennifer's pussy. Before any action, Guard 1 once again showed Jennifer his phone and, lo and behold, it was a video of her fucking them (the guards). She saw herself taking the thick cock in her pussy, heard herself moaning like a bitch, most importantly her facial expression was full of pleasure! As Jennifer was confused and horny at herself, Guard 2 rammed his cock into her ass without warning.
Her scream filled the entire room as Guard 2 mercilessly fucked Jennifer's ass. She was an anal virgin and never once thought of anal (which is the main reason she broke up with her ex). Jennifer struggled and tried to push herself off but to no avail. The guards just laughed at her nonsense and Guard 2 continued to rape her ass and finally unloaded into Jennifer's last remaining untainted hole.
Jennifer was dazed, scared, weak from being manhandled at the end. She just laid on her messy bed and didn't even stop the guards from taking photos of her used pussy and ass before exiting her room, leaving her door ajar. Of course, this was only the morning shift guards, the night shift guards would start work at 6pm...

ok. it's established. i am not as smart as everyone around me believes. sorting citations in mendeley should've been a 30 min task. tops. why am i still here, then? ~2 hours since i started. mistake 1: logging-in on tumblr. mistake 2: stumbling upon your blog (technically not a mistake, just a random occurrence — but is anything random, though?) mistake 3: scrolling mistake 4: wearing the cage (technically not a mistake. it was suppose to curb these distractions. *smh*)
you have curated something really fun [and niche]. all of a sudden i don't feel so alone. horny doctoral students exist! i am not the last survivor of a lost tribe! (': i hope your day's been nice to you so far. —🤓🐻
🤣🤣🤣🤣 thank you SO much for this great message! I couldn't stop laughing and it put a smile on my face because I can TOTALLY relate.
This month, I'm off of school, so I will be doing a ton of work on some manuscripts and etc. Your ask may have inspired an entire APA hoe shoot 🤣
Me, currently:⬇️
Tumblr media
I've spent entirely too much time on Zotero trying to download custom citation styles and figuring out how to write new ones. (Apa, footnote superscript style, with other specifics. Yes, I know that's not standard, long story 🤣) I managed to stump my poor librarian, lol.
I've moved to Mendeley. Then, I moved back to zotero. And WHY DON'T THEY HAVE APPS?! (Mendeley did, but then got rid of it, wtf!)
But the scary part? I love this part of the research process. I love how there are rules to follow and exact protocols for everything. Because how often in life do you get specific protocols to follow? 🤣
God, I'm so weird and such a masochist 🤣
I've written before about how I need tumblr to balance out my professional/academic life....I won't get into it now, but there is a very nuanced balance for me between work and play that actually makes me more centered, happy, and productive. I don't think these things should be mutually exclusive. Rather, I think they create a beautiful synergy when specifically balanced towards individual needs and personalities.
Thanks for following along and your ask!

I asked my friend to proofread my book because I KNOW I did not catch all the typos, and
I tried so hard to cut down on my comma usage and now she's adding half of them back in and I am never going to understand comma usage am I?
I apparently never understand to vs too either.
some things are stylistic choices and I'm KEEPING them because it's a CHOICE
And we're also fighting in the document comments because she's trying to correct my British English uses to American English and GIRL WE ARE CANADIAN WE USE BRITISH and because I typed somethings in Chicago-style format (old habits from university days) and she's trying to change it to APA.

Can I ask, how does one go about becoming an editor? Like, where do you apply for jobs?? What kinda training do you do?? Are there companies that hire out editors to writers? Im just so confused about it. Ive always been interested in editing, and am considering doing it as a job
Editing is a weird career.
Really, I started as a writer. Like, when I was eleven. In jr. high and high school, I was in a writing critique group and I wrote a lot. I graduated from university with a degree in theatre, film, and creative writing. I was often the person my friends came to when they needed help with a paper (or the correct placement of a semicolon). I've been involved in fandom since I was about 17, and I was very fortunate to fall in with a group of excellent writers who were also excellent betas and editors. I learned a TON from them without realizing how much I was learning.
I started editing by accident, really. Sometimes, that's how it happens. I mostly got gigs here and there through friends or word of mouth. About ten years ago, I got more serious about it. I worked for companies that paid horribly. Then I did an editing test for a company that paid less horribly, and they hired me. After a couple of years editing countless academic papers, ESL academic papers, novels, emails, business documents, etc., I decided to branch out on my own (mostly so I could work on more fiction; I was burned out on academic papers).
I joined Editors Canada, started volunteering with them, got a lot more experience, and took a few continuing ed courses to gauge where my skills were at and to determine if I needed to upgrade my education. I decided I didn't need to do that, because I already knew the things I was being taught.
I read a lot of books on editing, writing, and craft. I familiarized myself with the Chicago Manual of Style, APA, MLA, and a couple of other style guides. I learned the differences in spelling, punctuation, and style between US, UK, and Canadian English. I went to webinars, conferences, and courses (all the major editing associations offer these, usually cheaper or free for members; they are a great way to determine what kinds of editing you actually LIKE). I learned the difference between rules and preferences, and when to apply them to a text.
I work freelance, which means I have my own business as a sole proprietor. I'm a contractor with a couple of companies who sometimes send work my way, but most of my clients are individual writers planning to either self-publish or polish their work before seeking traditional publication via the agent/tradpub route.
Freelancing has many perks but is not particularly secure. Especially if you're American and need an employer to provide health insurance, or if you're single and don't have another income to lean on when contracts are scarce. These days, most of my work comes via referrals, my website, or the listing I have in the Editors Canada directory. I follow a couple of editing-related Facebook groups; I've learned a lot there, and I've also picked up the occasional client. A couple of people have found me through LinkedIn. A couple of people have found me through here!
I've never worked in-house for a publisher--mostly because having control over how many hours I work and when I work them is my top priority. In-house is a whole different ballgame; I know a bit about it from my peers, but I don't have firsthand experience to pass on. These jobs are supposedly more secure--and they tend to be salaried, with benefits, etc.
"Editing" is a GIANT umbrella term. There are SO many types of editing out there. People tend to think of book publishing first, but that's only one avenue. There are also different kinds of editors who tackle different types of problems. I've done enough of everything to recognize that I am much happier when I'm working on big picture stuff--coaching, developmental editing, manuscript critique. Others specialize in the nitty gritty mechanical details that make proofreading or copy editing a better fit.
Right now, the bulk of my work life is actually spent ghostwriting. The client's business-materials editor posted that his client was looking for someone to help with characterization in a novel. I ended up winning that contract. He came to me with one monster book. I helped him realize it needed to be at least a trilogy, and now he has plans for a ten-book series--and I'm helping write it. But I got the job because of the work I've done on the development side of editing--and because I've spent SO MUCH TIME learning about characterization (via acting, fandom/writing fanfic, reading, etc.). So. It all feeds into the same place.
The tl;dr is that my experience has been a bizarre mix of being in the right place at the right time, ongoing professional development, and learning the value of volunteering with an association. If I were starting down this career path right now, I'd probably do an editing certificate (there are many out there, depending on country). I'd definitely join an association sooner (even as a student member) and volunteer.
Actually, the ultimate tl;dr is ... this industry IS CONFUSING. So, don't feel bad about being confused. It's actually probably about eight different kinds of job wearing a trench-coat and pretending it's something called "Editing."

Hello! I do not follow your tumblr, but I probably should because I randomly check it twenty times a day. Dinner is not necessary, but I am mighty tempted to find some way to send you an actual 20 page essay because your writing warrants it and I have so many more thoughts I didn't even touch on. If so: Professor ScaredyCrow/sepulchritude, while I am most familiar with APA, Chicago allows for more bullshit in the footnotes and I humbly request the ability to use this citation style instead and -
Omg
I would not be able to shut up about it for at least a month if you do that. I would have to tell everyone I know, which would require some awkward explaining that I have basically been writing a book for 2 years and no they can’t read it, but that would not stop me from telling literally everyone
Chicago or APA or some bastardized combination of the two, all are welcome
