strange sleeping arrangements
In which Will and Mike get Murray’d and shenanigans ensue (this is not canon compliant).  I wrote this at 2 AM and it’s pretty messy but I tried.  I usually don’t write for other fandoms besides anipoke so we’ll see how this goes
TW/CW: mild swearing
Words: 3k
Mike Wheeler had a fairly large family, he liked to think.  He had two sisters and, obviously, two parents, making his family a family of five.  What he did not expect, however, was his already fairly large family of five to become a family of nine in the span of two days.  After the whole mess with Hawkins and the Upside Down opening up a massive gate through the entire town, the Wheeler house had been temporarily utilized for the Byers + Murray Bauman, for reasons that Mike could only decipher as “needing to relocate before the Russian government concocts a plan to assassinate him”.  As far as Mike could tell, he was the only one worried about this, as Joyce, who had also been involved with the whole Russia scheme, didn’t seem as pressed as Murray was.
As far as sleeping arrangements went, Mike’s mother had permitted Nancy and Jonathan to sleep in the same room only because of limited space, Joyce had gotten Holly’s room while Karen and Holly got what would normally be Mike’s parents’ room.  Ted Wheeler was perfectly content sleeping on the lazy boy.  As for Murray and Will, well, it was a bit more complicated.  Every time his mother told him he’d be sharing a room with Will, he physically recoiled.
What was wrong with him?
“Mike, why are you so resistant to sharing your room with Will? He’s our guest, for God’s sake.  Have some hospitality,” Karen scolded, shooting Mike a disapproving glare.
“It’s- it’s just-” Mike really had no explanation for it.  The thought of doing such a thing, though he’d done it so many times before with all of the sleepovers he’d had with Will over the years, it scared him.  It scared him and shook him to his core and he didn’t know why.
Well, he sort of did know why, but he pretended he didn’t.
“It’s fine, Mrs. Wheeler.  I can just sleep in the basement,” Will chimed in.  His voice had an edge to it that Mike couldn’t seem to place.
Before Mike could say anything, Murray was in the doorframe leading into the kitchen, a bottle of what looked to be vodka clutched tightly in his hands as he scanned the room with a look of utter disapproval.
“Nope.  Not happening.  I am not, under any circumstance, having a twelve year old sleep in a dirty basement with me.”
“I’m fifteen,” Will corrected.
“Same difference!”
Mrs. Wheeler physically cringed at the sight of Murray, muttering a sort it out between the three of you before briskly exiting the kitchen.  Murray rolled his eyes, strutting into the kitchen and opening the fridge, clearly looking for some sort of food to combat the vodka.
Mike stole a glance over at Will, who had already been staring at him.  He quickly looked away, suddenly feeling a tightening in his chest.
Things had been different after El had fought Vecna.  Things had been different after Will had showed him the painting.
Hell, things had been different since that day Will had gotten back from the Upside Down.
Mike didn’t seem to have an ounce of hospitality left in him, and all he wanted to do was slam the door of his room in Will’s face and tell him to never walk in it, ever.
“Mike,” Will whispered, glancing at Murray to make sure he wasn’t listening (he was busy slugging vodka and toasting Eggo waffles), “what’s wrong with you? You’ve been acting strange since we got back.” Will sighed, furrowing his brows at Mike. “Actually, you’ve been acting strange since you came to visit us.  What’s up with you?”
Mike clenched his fists so hard that he thought the veins in his hand might explode. “Nothing.  Nothing’s wrong.  My room is just messy.  I-” Mike swallowed hard, knowing damn well that wasn’t the reason, “I- uh- I wouldn’t want you staying in it.”
Will looked unconvinced. “Are you sure?”
The tightening in Mike’s chest seemed to suddenly explode. He stood up, slamming both hands down on the countertop in front of him. “I told you, nothing’s wrong!”
Will jumped, looking rather hurt by Mike’s sudden outburst.  He was about to say something more, but before he could, the sound of a toaster popping on the other side of the kitchen startled both boys.  Murray turned around, taking a sip of vodka and a bite of his now freshly-toasted waffle, raising an eyebrow at the two.
“Lover’s quarrel?”
The two boys glanced at each other with looks on par with what the actual hell is he talking about and both shouted “NO!” in unison at the man standing before them.
“My, my, no need to get so defensive! I was simply making an observation.” Murray shrugged, taking another bite of his Eggo. “You two argue like a pair of moody teenagers who are secretly in love with one another.  One of them,” he motioned to Mike, who visibly flinched, “is emotionally constipated when it comes to love because of, let me guess, his parents don’t actually love each other and he grew up with the expectation that his future “true love” would be exactly like that, so he needs a cute little fluffy emotional baggage compartment,” this time, Murray motioned to Will, who looked rather taken aback,  “to reassure him that he’s worth every penny of love because, oh my god, he’s head over heels for said boy and would do absolutely anything for him, even if it means shouldering the weight of his emotionally constipated love-of-his-life, who, by the way, probably hasn’t taken into account that he’s trauma dumping on a person who already has enough trauma as it is.”
The three sat in silence.  Mike looked over at Will, who was frozen on the spot, a clear, deep shade of red occupying his cheeks.  Mike opened his mouth to say something more, but found that all words escaped him.
Because, goddamnit, Murray had somehow gotten everything that was going on in his head into words.  Odd words, but words nonetheless.
Mike wanted to die.
Murray sighed. “The point is,” he said, swallowing the last bits of Eggo, “I don’t want a hopelessly in love twelve year old sleeping in the same room as me.  I left my adolescence long ago- I don’t want to have to relive it.  So for Pete’s sake, just share a goddamn room.”
With that, Murray retreated to the basement, still carrying the bottle of vodka in his hand.  Will and Mike looked at each other, then looked away, then looked at each other again before Mike sighed.
“Just take my room. I’ll take the basement.  I’m going to bed.”
Will was about to protest, but Mike was already making his way down the basement steps.  Truthfully, Mike just wanted to get out of the situation as soon as possible, even if that meant sharing a basement with none other than Murray Bauman.
**
Mike couldn’t sleep.  The one very obvious reason why he couldn’t sleep was because of the fact that Murray snored extremely loudly.  Mike was surprised he hadn’t woken up the entire house.
The second reason (which, coincidentally, also had to do with Murray) was that he couldn’t stop thinking about the things Murray had said, and how spot-on they had been.
He was “emotionally constipated”, even if he hated to admit it to himself.  His parents had never loved each other- his mom had married his dad for the money and that was about it.  And yeah, okay, he had relied on Will for like, basically all of his emotional support throughout the years.  He’d never actually talked to El about that stuff because she had so much trauma already from quite literally being raised in a lab and he wasn’t about to compare his own problems to…that.  Maybe that was why his relationship with El had seemed so different lately, why his confession of “love” hadn’t felt right at all and had just felt like it needed to be there so that El wouldn’t die fighting Vecna.  He truly cared about El, but deep down, he knew he wouldn’t be able to love her in the way she so clearly loved him.  And that was something that terrified him to his core.  He wanted her to be happy, and he feared telling her the truth would devastate her.
But what about Will?  Mike realized that since the day Will had come back from the Upside Down, he had been, as Murray described, been treating him as somewhat of an “emotional baggage compartment”.  Only there to help Mike through pointless relationship problems with El, when he’d really been neglecting checking in to see if Will had been okay through it all.
“I’m such an asshole,” Mike murmured to himself, rubbing his temple with his fingers.
He shot up from his sleeping bag, deciding that it wasn’t worth it trying to sleep with his thoughts, and quietly creeped up the basement stairs in order to not wake his rather odd guest.  If anyone saw him, he could just say he was getting water.  Which, honestly, could really help as a distraction from the situation he was in right now.  The pitter-patter of rain sounded outside the window, which only fueled the mood even more.
However, his endeavor was quickly put to a stop when he noticed a familiar face also standing in the kitchen, looking just as dumbfounded as he was.
“Hi,” Will uttered, a glass of what Mike hoped was water and not Murray’s vodka clutched tightly in hand.
“Hey,” Mike croaked in response.
“I was just-”
“Oh, yeah, sorry.  I was just- uh- getting water. Yeah.”
“Oh.  Here.” Will quickly filled a cup for Mike and passed it to him.  The brush of Will’s fingers against his sent chills up Mike’s spine, though he tried not to show it.
“Thanks.”
The two sat in silence, awkwardly sipping their individual cups of water before Mike decided to break the tension.
“About what he said-”
“Don’t worry about it,” Will interrupted, diverting his gaze from Mike. “It’s- it’s not true, anyways.”
“No, no, it is,” Mike replied.  Will’s heart fluttered for a moment before Mike quickly caught himself. “I mean, the stuff about the emotions.  And everything.  I’m- I’m sorry if I keep using you as a “baggage compartment”, or whatever he said.  I’ve been an ass to you and you’ve been so tolerating of it and I’m sorry.”
Will was unsure of what to say, so he just nodded.  Mike had been an ass to him and still, all he wanted to do was grab his dumb face and kiss him.  He hated it.
“Will?” Mike placed a hand on his friend’s shoulder, snapping Will out of his daze. “You okay?”
Will jumped, turning red in the face before jerking his shoulder away. “Fine.  Just tired.  Goodnight.”
**
Without another word, Will turned and walked back to Mike’s room, leaving the latter standing in the kitchen.  He didn’t bother looking back at him in fear of doing something he would probably regret.  Will slammed the door to the room rather loudly.  He still wanted to punch Mike for hesitating in letting him share it.
Why did he hesitate, anyways?
He sat on the edge of the bed, the bed he’d half grown up in.  He’d had countless sleepovers and hangouts with Mike in this bed, but now it just felt empty.  Empty and sad.  The rain that was currently pouring outside didn’t help the mood.  Will’s mind drifted, and he was brought back to the fated day, the day where it was pouring outside and all he had wanted to do was play DND with Mike and Lucas, then Mike had said that…thing to him, and he’d left.  And then, in a pure fit of rage…he’d destroyed Castle Byers.
“It’s not my fault you don’t like girls!”
Will buried his head in his hands, sighing shakily.  He knew harboring feelings for Mike would only lead to heartbreak.  He knew, and still, his crush only continued to grow.  He’d been absolutely heartbroken when Mike had begun dating El.  Whenever the phone rang, Will always became hopeful that Mike was calling for him, but it was never the case.  It was always El.
Murray was right.  Right about everything.
Without thinking, Will walked over to the door, placing his hand on the doorknob.  He needed to say something.  If he didn’t, he feared he never would.  Just as he swung the door open, however, he was met with a pair of brown eyes staring back at him.  He blinked, trying to process the sight.
“Hi,” Mike said, a smile curving at his lips.
“Hi,” Will echoed, suddenly realizing how close the two were.
Mike visibly hesitated before talking again. “Murray was right.”
“You’ve said that.” “No.  I mean…about everything.”
Unsure how to respond, Will stood in the doorframe like an idiot, watching as Mike clearly had some sort of mental battle that he couldn’t see very well on the surface.  He exhaled deeply, making direct eye contact with Will.
“I hope you thought he was right too.”
“What do you-”
Will was cut off by a pair of lips on his.  He froze for a second, processing the action, before feeling his entire body melt into it.  However, just as soon as it had started, Mike pulled away, eyes wide, as if in shock over what he himself had just done.
“Holy shit,” Mike murmured, observing Will’s expression (which was unreadable to him), “holy shit, I’m so sorry.”
Will couldn’t help but grin at Mike’s awkwardness, gently snaking an arm around his neck and pulling him so close that their foreheads touched.  Both boys’ breathing was incredibly shaky as they stared at each others’ lips.
“Yeah, I think Murray was onto something,” Will chuckled.
“Think so?” Mike replied. “I couldn’t sleep down there anyway, he snores so goddamn loud.”
At this, both laughed in unison, though rather quietly so they didn’t wake up the house.  All of a sudden, their laughter stopped as Will focused on Mike’s lips.  His voice could barely be heard above the pouring rain, but Mike managed to make it out.
“It’s always been you,” Will breathed.
“I know,” Mike whispered, “I know.”
Will leaned in first this time, drawing Mike closer to close the gap between the two.   Mike sighed into the kiss, eliciting a smile from Will as he reached up to run his hands through Mike’s curls.  Mike gently cupped Will’s face in his hands, drawing him ever closer.
It started sweet and gentle, but gradually, both became more desperate.  Will pulled back, suddenly realizing as he heard the creak of a door down the hallway that the bedroom door was still very much open and that anyone walking past would see the two of them making out.
“Shit.  Close the door.”
Mike laughed, quickly slamming the door shut and locked.  Before he had time to refocus himself on Will, he was pinned against a wall as Will kissed him desperately.  Mike was grabbing his shirt, pulling him closer.  He swiped his tongue along Will’s lip, asking for entrance, which only served to deepen their kiss more.  Finally, after what seemed like hours, both pulled away, breathing heavy as they tried to put lost air back in their lungs.
“Well.  Shit,” Mike breathed.
“Shit,” Will agreed.
“This means I can stay in my own bedroom now, right?”
“Shut up,” Will laughed, pressing a kiss onto Mike’s lips.
“Also,” Mike started, “what- what does this mean?”
“It means we just made out for a good five minutes because of a man in your kitchen who drank too much vodka.”
Mike laughed, but his expression soon turned serious. “No. Really.  What does this mean?”
Will stayed silent for a moment.  His hands were still scrunched up in Mike’s shirt.  His heart was still beating a mile a minute.  His lips were still red from making out with his crush since, well, forever.
“I- I don’t know,” Will admitted.
Mike wrapped his arms around Will, this time just pulling him in for a simple hug. “Okay.  I understand. I mean, we are kind of in the middle of the apocalypse right now.  And my house is overflowing with people and if we keep doing this we’ll probably get caught.”
The two laughed, staying like that, hugging each other, in the middle of Mike Wheeler’s room.  Both could’ve honestly stayed like that forever.
“I guess we have Murray to thank,” Mike joked.
“And the sleeping arrangements that someone refused to comply to,” Will added.
Sharing a room with Will Byers was taking him back to old times, sure, but as Mike kissed Will once more, he felt it.  Something he hadn’t felt with El or anyone else.
Mike didn’t mind these new feelings.  They were better than anything he could’ve ever imagined.

ST 5
Idk about yg but i really hope that they choose to do weekly episodes or smth. ik everyone hates weekly episodes cause you gotta wait n all, but that’s kinda why i want it.
this is the last season!! i don’t wanna watch it for a week, then forget about it in a month. i wanted to make theories, and slowly enjoy, and im sure everyone else does too.
this fandom is crazy, they’ll pick up on everything in every episode to make theories which is sm fun. there won’t be much of that if they release it at onxe
also for netflix, it would be really smart bc people will talk about this show even more and rewatch it all the time until the end
SUSPENSE!! netflix shows suspense is that big like disney or prime. something major happens, then you go to the next episode. i want to be terrified to see what happens next, and think abt it all week
the show is coming to an end and i feel like i stand for everyone when i say, we want to enjoy it. i want the suspense ykwim?
anyways duffer bros/netflix PLEASE!!

It’s so good to finally see someone else that actually has common sense lol I can’t even stand being on twitter right now to be honest. It’s like everyone was just waiting for an excuse to say the most disgusting homophobic antisemitic shit towards Noah because I haven’t even seen this much hostility towards celebrities that have done actually horrible things. He’s getting death threats and doxxed for not siding with literal terrorists. What happened on oct 7th was awful and to see so many people saying it was justified because Israelis are “colonizers” makes me feel sick. Would it be ok if native Americans started killing all white americans because of what our ancestors did? I feel like these people would probably support that as well.
I really hope Netflix doesn’t give into all the twitter lunacy and actually fire Noah or possibly force the writers to change his role to give him less screen time since he’s meant to be the focus of season 5. I know the Duffers and Shawn Levy also support Israel, but I’m worried they’ll surrender anyway because they can’t afford bad publicity for the final season. I just hope they don’t alter their story to appease terrorist supporters.
No! No way would they destroy Stranger Things to appease the zombie mob. No chance in hell. ST is a huge success without them, being complete mainstream everywhere and in pretty much every age group. (Most ST fans, as in avid watchers, never even heard the name Noah Schnapp btw. They know the kid with the bowl cut when they see him) There is absolutely no reason to worry. What would hurt ST is having a bad last season, which any fucking with Will would cause.
HE IS IN THE FIRST SCENE IN THE UD, SINGING SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO! As is already teased!
And you can always trust the Duffer bros!
What is a reason to worry is Noah's mental health, as it is know that online bullying destroys lives. I suppose that is the most likely way to harm STS is him not being fit ro play. :( But I don't think so. He will be safe in a benevolent bubble and act his heart out.

the duffer bros just tried to put so much into season 4 that they literally could not even keep up with it. will is one of my favorite characters but he was so unbelievably pointless this season, as was mike and jonathan. argyle is another character i loved but he was pointless as well. they spent way too much time with the russian plotline which absolutely could have been condensed and jason was the most useless waste of time ever. the whole scene at susie’s house could have been cut down, no one needed to know more about her family i mean what even was the point of that?? i have no clue why they would want nancy and steve back together they could have made that such a strong friendship instead and let steve grow into his own human. same with eleven, if she would have broken up with mike by saying she needed to be her own person and figure out who she was on her own that would have done so much for her character and mike’s as well. why was mike such an asshole to will? even after he said he wanted them to be best friends again we never saw that happen... also what happened with all the parents joining together and watching the kids run away and commit crimes (slashing the cops tires)? that was never resolved. why the fuck even mention will’s painting when it meant absolutely nothing in the end and wasn’t even as good as his drawings in season 2? also, while i enjoyed chrissy and thought she was sweet they spent way too much time on her character when they were just going to kill her off right away anyway. we could have had more time watching el and will’s sibling relationship, or had some scenes with el and joyce instead. why wait until like the last 20 minutes to bring everyone together? would’ve had such a bigger impact if we would have gotten to see more of el and hopper reuniting. big bummer we didn’t get to see more of joyce and will together too. i loved their scenes in season 2 and would have really enjoyed more of them together. why did no one else mourn eddie? why is half of the gang at the school just chillin’ when they know vecna is the reason for their town being ripped to shreds??? i have questions.

I’m literally begging people to not be assholes to the Duffer brothers when By/ler doesn’t happen.
Mileven has been the story since the beginning. Yes, it’s clear Will is in love with Mike but it’s not at all realistic for Mike to just up and end things with El to be with Will in rural Indiana in the 80s. Like... it doesn’t make sense in any capacity and especially not from a narrative/storytelling perspective.
By/ler is a super cute fan ship but canonically it just doesn’t make sense. It wouldn’t be good story telling honestly after so long to just fully and completely break up the main couple, whose story primarily drives the show.
Anyway I know what it’s like to be super disappointed by ships and storylines. But I foresee the Duffer bros being called cowards, homophobic, etc for not telling the story some fans want and it’s going to be a shit show. So like... don’t?
(I’m insta blocking antis because I just do not engage in toxic fandom anymore. I properly tagged my anti bullshit lol)

I do not know what is up with R3ddit but guys out there literally think the duffers are just going to give Will a background love interest in S5 or something. Do they really think they are going to give their main character a background love interest in S5? when they have introduced a love interest (Vickie) for one of their more minor character (Robin)?
Like, do they even realize how fucking ridiculous it sounds? So they were more encouraged to introduce a new love interest for one of their minor characters than to introduce a new love interest for their main character? Not hating on Robin here but objectively speaking she is not exactly a main character like Will is.
Not to mention the duffers could already have introduced a new love interest for Will in S4 by making him meet with a boy in Cali. Yet they have not.
Like I really am trying to see their point here. Do they think the Duffers would just hate Will so much that they make him suffer, throw him in an unrequited love storyline, and build up Mike's rejection... for what exactly? For ''realism''???? Why would they do that to their main character who is the only canonically confirmed gay boy on the show??? When they wouldn't do that to Robin??
Fuck off with your ''realism'', really. It's not realism you guys want. It's just cruelty and suffering and hate crime you guys want to see.
The Duffers aren't going to introduce a fucking homophobic heartbreak storyline for their main, I'm sorry if you guys want to see that happen but it's not how things work. I'm saying this to Melvins who want and expect this to happen as well, if you are reading this ask. It's not gonna happen. And if it happens, then the Duffers would give their only gay main character the most homophobic storyline for no reason other than suffering tbh, when they could have introduced a new love interest for Will already without involving him in Mike's storyline.
Do you guys really believe the Duffers would be that cruel and write something like this than to believe that they are breaking Melvin up since at least S3 by showing us how their relationship doesn't work because they are not compitable?
To be honest, I think the reason a lot of people, especially Reddit Bros, think this is because they don't view Will as a main character.
I've noticed a trend in which a lot of (mostly guys let's be real) in the GA kind of write Will off as an unimportant character. I think a lot of people are more focused on El and her arc, and are invested in the Vecna storyline, but they really don't view Will to be significant outside of his connection to Vecna.
Basically, they view Will as a plot device and not a character, which is why they're so comfortable with the idea that he ends up sad, alone, or dead, because they're viewing him as a way of getting from point A in the plot to point B,
But this is explicitly NOT how the Duffers have written Will, and they've made that pretty apparent, especially in recent interviews saying that Will is going to be a main focus in season 5, which means that Will's emotions, motivations, and struggles ARE important to the storyline. And that also means that his feelings for Mike WILL get more explicitly addressed.
But because they continually view Will as a side character or as less important to the plot, they couldn't even fathom him actually getting a well-developed arc in which he could potentially have a real love interest.
And yes, I do think homophobia has something to do with the fact that a lot of these dudebros don't really seem to care about Will as a character.
Anyway, Will Byers deserves better and he deserves his mf hero arc and he deserves love and affection from his boyfriend Mike Wheeler.

it’s really sad that now that all of season 4 is out, and there was little to no pay off with mike and wills dynamic, people are saying things like ‘what did you expect???? it’s the 80’s!!!!! there was an aids epidemic!!!!!! mike could’ve been homophobic to will!!!’
bro mike is wills best friend. robin came out to steve after just barely knowing him and he was so chill about it (and he called jonathan a gay slur in season one👀). i understand that mikes family seemed to have more conservative beliefs (the reagan sign on their front lawn in season 2), but i’ve always been under the impression that mike does not have the same views as his parents, he barely has anything to do with them. (with the exception of his mom sometimes) mike and will have been through so much together, there’s no way mike would hurt will like that if he came out to him. (also the duffers would never make one of their main characters homophobic lol)
if will came out to mike in the show, it could’ve been a really powerful moment in the show, instead of ‘up to interpretation’ subtlety that a lot of writers and directors end up settling for. (like they still won’t use the word lesbian with robin, all they say is ‘you like boobies!!!🤪’. it would just mean a lot to so many people if they actually said the words ‘gay and lesbian’ which are words that existed in the 80’s as well, but they have no problem using slurs lol)
anyways, that aside, i see so many people also saying ‘it’s not queer baiting just because ur fav ship didn’t work out!!!!!!’ and that’s a fair statement to say, but the way that byler was teased was so bizarre to me. because it wasn’t just byler fans over analyzing scenes and getting their hopes up, it was stranger things and netflix social media accounts commenting and liking byler related content, noah schnapp telling people to ‘definitely ship’ byler because they are in the process of ‘building that up’. all of that just for noting to happen. why build that up for absolutely nothing to happen? (also no hate to noah at all lol i know he has nothing to do with what ends up happening in the show it was just weird to lowkey hype it up knowing nothing really comes of it)
maybe i’m being a little bit picky, but i don’t think there’s anything wrong with thinking that when it comes to wanting good representation in a show as successful as stranger things. anyways, don’t let people make u feel bad for thinking something was going to happen lol we were all lowkey tricked that’s all rant over

Honestly I would have no byler doubt at all if it wasn’t for the damn monologue. I know it’s been analyzed to death on why it wasn’t completely genuine and it does make sense but then I start to think why the duffers would even do the monologue in the first place if they were going to breakup marijuana next season. I keep thinking of when they hyped it up before vol 2 came out and said it’s Finn’s best performance. It’s driving me crazy because the way it was set up with using Will’s feelings for Mike to even be able to tell El he loves her means they really fucked up if it isn’t actually a setup for byler to happen next season. If they really just used Will’s love for Mike as something to get McNugget back together I’ll be so upset. :(
i understand your thought process and i did completely agree with you at one point but i think ive grown to actually appreciate the purpose of this monologue. i do however still think el should have broken up with him this season for sure.
to answer what the point of it was if theyre just gonna break up anyway, i think it was entirely for el’s arc. for her to realize that she’s finally heard those words she needed to hear but it didnt change anything. she still wasnt happy. we see that based on the fact that they share zero dialogue and barely acknowledge each other after that scene. youd expect her to hug and kiss him and say she loves him too but she didnt. i dont think she believed it because the only other time he said he loved her was also a tense life or death situation. he cant say it just casually.
also just the ratio of byler to mlvn evidence just points so aggressively towards byler that even on july 1st i wasnt even thinking “we got queerbaited :(“ i was just astronomically confused because the way they set up volume 1 it completely looked like mlvn was bones ESPECIALLY considering it wasnt just “look!! byler!!” it was also “look at all of mlvns problems!!”. and that couldnt have been queerbait because THEY DIDNT KNOW ITD BE IN TWO PARTS!!!!!!!!! so its not like they were like “ok lets build up byler and gain an audience for a month and then redeem mlvn”. they didnt know they would be doing that when they were still in production.
in just volume one we got (and these are just the biggies not everything) a very shitty “im not gay” bro tap instead of a hug after not seeing his best friend for months, el lying to him about being so happy and having so many friends in lenora because shes insecure about their relationship, mike being so fake too by avoiding eye contact with her and not seeming that engaged in whats going on the way she is, ignoring will but then listing off all these things he noticed, INSISTING that theyre just friends even tho will didnt even imply that he meant anything romantic, a track called IN THE CLOSET playing when MIKE SPEAKS, mike and els fight and el crying because he never says he loves her and he kinda gaslights her and turns it back around to the bullies and mouth breathers, “its hawkins its not the same without you”, the tripple take. theres literally so much.
ALLLLL that doesnt get erased just from one scene. and again, it wasnt initially intended to be in two parts so no, their thought process could not have been queerbaiting for why there was so much byler in volume one and not two.
i understand why the duffers said this was finns best performance. this would probably be an incredibly difficult thing to act out. its not just a love confession, its a love confession that he doesnt mean. but the audience doesnt know that. it couldnt be so obvious that EVERYONE immediately picks up on it being fake buts its still gotta be a little suspicious. he needed to put just the right amount of emotion so people may like it but also start to question it.
also his micro expressions are really good. this is not the face of someone about to tell the love of his life his feelings. its someone whos about to do something he doesnt want to do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i honestly really hope next week we get the script for this scene. even if it doesnt give insight to mikes feelings, seeing el’s pov would also be really interesting. plz vote for it if its an option.

I find the statement ''Mike has been lying to himself and to others for a while'' so funny bc that is not even Mike bro that is basically Will. Mike has been largely the most truthful and honest character on the show lmao. Will is still literally hiding himself though which everyone should be worried for S5 esp when he is literally mentally and emotionally connected to Vecna himself.
I don't think he is lying about his feelings when he is talking with the interested person one on one, but I get why people are suspicious of it because they did make him lie about other things!
anyway yeah, I think Will is the one that is hiding himself, Mike just has not completely realized yet what the hell is happening to him or why he does feel something different for Will than his other friends 😏😏😏
it's very probable that Vecna will attack all of them with visions in my opinion, like all the kids in the party will be tormented somehow, I think the Duffers are going to do something like in It 1990 and the remakes when the clown makes the party split up and attacks them all with their worst fears...
I think it will be some kind of mental torture 😭

I've seen so many queer st fans think that byler needs to be unrequited to be realistic and will needs to "learn how to love himself" but I feel like part of this line of thinking comes from projecting their life experiences onto will.. which I completely understand! I do it all the time! However, the thing is is that... Will and mike aren't real people. They have constant motivations and plot beats that drive each and every one of their actions, the things they do are used to drive a certain plot or their respective character arcs forward; if the duffer bros decided that either of their deaths would make narrative sense or they felt their characters had no where to go they could just kill them off ffs. Just because people aren't used to their past crushes also happening to be queer and feel it's impossible for it to happen doesn't mean it is, especially when it comes to writing a show about fighting monsters from a parallel dimension. ST has a problem w putting all their characters into romantic pairings, yes, but why does byler being canon mean all the other straight pairings(other than m*leven) have to be together as well?? IMO, the only ships that I see being endgame are jopper, lumax, rovickie and byler. As much as I like jancy I feel like it would just make sense; they love each other for sure, but I think their paths are gonna separate, for the time being anyway(I could def see them getting back together after college or whatever tho). And I think Steve should stay single too cuz, and this is how I feel about Jonathan as well, he really shines as a character outside of a romantic context. And El, I just don't see her ending up w anyone romantically? I just wanna see her friendships and familial relationships(esp Joyce, will, Jonathan, and the rest of the party) shine. But yeah, will and Mike's arcs are intertwined(like c'mon, will is mike's light and mike is Will's heart and u expect me to not root for them...?). Also there's *realistically* not enough to make Will's love for mike unrequited and have it be nearly as fleshed out as some people might like 😭 s5 is only gonna be 8 episodes (they're long but still, only 8 episodes), and how would mike find out about will's feelings(even tho again, realistically, WHEN would will even voluntarily tell him??), reject him, and have will "get over it" AND have the audience believe it. There's just no way, I'm sorry. Even w a corny ass timeskip 20 years later and will has a bf(who in a nightmare scenario looks like mike) people would just not buy that he got over feelings that intense that quickly and the GA would probably feel somewhat(?) happy for him maybe and/or pity at best and just make fun of him at worst.. also omfg sorry this was so long but this take annoys the hell out of meeee
I just think it's funny because people do bring up their personal experiences like "I got over my childhood crush" like good for you but I don't want to see that with Will and Mike. Realistic or not. If he's loved Mike for so long of course he's not going to get another boyfriend that doesn't make sense. Even if he did realistically that poor soul will always be in the shadow of Mike. Either way thanks for sharing your thoughts.

The melvin in your asks was so selective in the information they chose and actively ignored all the info that didn’t support their ship: especially with season 4, it’s like they went out of their way to paint season 4 as a melvin positive even though it clearly wasn’t
thank you for saying thoughts that havent even come to my head yet you're great for this
also speaking of that, he says i love you nine times right? yeah okay thats a lot, but what about "i love you on your good days and on your bad days" uhh didnt you stand up to your bully and she helped, and when she got her bully back suddenly "EL WHAT DID YOU DO" like yeah okay i would be freaked out too if i saw someones nose bridge bleeding, but after he literally didnt comfort her. like bro, what happened? also, it was like will pushed him to do it. i dont think it would have happened if he didnt. anyway, how come it took him so long to say i love you until she was literally dying? she begged you and suddenly "i just thought if i said it it would make that day hurt more" she WANTED to hear it. he says he loved her every day since they say eachother, no you didnt thats not how it works. the duffers who wrote this show literally said they didnt believe in love at first sight. another odd thing is that when she confronted him about not saying he loves her he goes and says "i say it" no you dont WHY IS IT TAKING YOU SO LONG BOY anyway again, saying that someone is your superhero is like, okay, police officers are my superheroes. so romantic right? i'm immediately in love with all of them. no im not, its just like looking up to someone. bye thanks for reading 🙋‍♀️

I have a problem with the way Billy Hargrove was written
Like, yeah, he's one of my favorite characters, of course i have a fucking problem with how the Duffer bros treated him. And i’m aware that this all was said before, but, you know, NOT BY ME
They could have fun with him. It could’ve been done in different ways.
1.The Redemption Arc
Well there is a couple points to address.
First, there are characters in the show who are: complicated - Jim Hopper; redimed - Steve Harrington.
With Hopper Duffers did surprisingly good job of showing us the good and the bad in him. We see that he cares a lot about El, but his way of showing it is a bit ~toxic~. And we know why he’s so protective of her. He lost a child before. Hopper doesn’t want to see it again. That’s the reason. But it’s not an excuse, is it?
And with Steve. Umm...well a bit of the confession i think Duffers dumbed him down just a tad too much. I get what they were going for. Lovable, bit of an idiot, with bite to his character and a heart of gold. And i praise and respect Joe Keery for his talent! Great job, not his fault. But i don’t think Duffers really respect Steve Harrington. It shows sometimes through the other characters. But anyway. Duffers redeemed Steve even though he was supposed to die a bully.
Second, the racism.
There is a definet reason people are divided on this topic. Is Billy racist or not? Well show accidentally made it up to interpretation. Duffers wanted to make a cliche 80s bully. They didn’t follow through, but more on that later. Also the show in general handels this topic weirdly
And then there’s Dacre Montgomery. If you’ve listened or read his interviews you know that this man understands that people are not cliches. And he chose not to play Billy as a racist. Whether you like it or not can read that through the screen.
Was Billy wrong with how he treated Lucas? Absolutely! Billy Hargrove fans are in fact not blind to this.
And that’s how you get mixed message instead of characteristic.
So, how this could be handled? First route (one that is popular with fans): Its Billys father who is racist and that’s why he doesn’t want Lucas around Max. Second route: Billy should be told that racism is in fact bad and get educated on the topic. Please, oh please, to tell him that he is wrong. Educate him. Let him digest and accept this. He is 17-18 years old, there is a high chance that he can change. That happens in real life.
And that could be historically realistic. You know that there should be more racists in Hawkins in the 80s. I know that the show is a work of fiction, but c’mon. Ah, well, already said that this topic is handled weirdly.
Third, Billys relationship with Max is written poorly, but the sentiment is there.
Their relationship is one of the biggest reasons why i like Billy.
At crisp age of ten a was gifted with sibling. I love them to death. I will become a sinner for them. But I didn’t want a younger sibling. Like. At all. So, I have very complicated feelings towards them that they are not aware off, cause they are ten. And believe me when i say it: getting a sibling at semi-conscious age when you weren’t planing on them is a traumatic experience,  no matter how dumb it sounds. And the fucking frustration of having to look after them is real. There was a couple of years when i was THE fucking babysitter, really exhausting, very anger producing. Props to my parents for understanding and fixing this as soon as they could.
(also had a beef with fourteen year olds at school when i was 16-17,not to demonize twelve to fourteen y.o., but they can be the special kind of annoying)
Both antis and stans had a problem with how Max was written in season 4. For the same reason actually. Because Duffers.
In season two we see that Max and Billy don’t like each other. Ok, great. Then season three Max cares for Billy when he gets possessed and was seemingly very upset when he died. In vol.1 this continuous with the letter (the part that got antis upset) and then suddenly in vol.2 Max says that Billy didn’t deserve to live (where stans got upset). Well i was upset both times. I was upset since season three, because there were no explanation of how we got from one to another. We all understand that Billy and Max had complicated relationship and all of the above can exist! It can be the emotional swing that it is, but when you looking at a swig you can see how it goes from one high to another.
Verdict: rewrite them from the beginning. Show us more. Duffers that’s the visual entertainment you’re giving us. SHOW DON’T TELL
That’s mainly it with the redemption. I mean there is also a fight at Byers, but that;s pretty self-explanatory.
2. MAKE BILLY AN ANTAGONIST WE WOULD ALL LOVE TO HATE
Duffers, you could have made Billy an absolute legend of a asshole. You could make him ridiculous! Let him be not only cliche, but something worse. You have real monsters in your world. Your world has goofy heroes and they are realistic (Murray), why not make an entertaining antagonist?!
But, ah well, Duffers fucked up a cliche. I really don’t how they so successfully failed.

I took a day or so off because of life factors and now it’s a rainy Saturday and I’m gonna at least watch a few episodes and give some reactions to random stuff as well as note things I forgot or didn’t notice before. I at some point will stop doing an intro since I don’t think anyone is reading these consistently.
1.) I forgot El really just starts this episode back at the last time we saw her in episode 1, like almost a full year before season 2 starts.
2.) honestly I’d forgotten this sequence in general of her reaching through the placenta hole in the wall and then making it bigger.
3) I especially forgot that Mike kind of saw her through the window while agents are trying to get him to talk and he just keeps staring at the window like a dipshit
4.) I love this comically large tree that El can hide under that no one checks.
5.) Jonathan still does scrambled eggs and toast as a speciality
6.) Erica exists now
7.) the montage of the costumes us so cute
8.) Mike being a little bit racist
9.) I forgot literally no one else dressed up
10.) hopper is still very sweet and patient about Will when talking to Joyce
11.) I don’t care about these guys in the lab even though I probably should care about them fixing a power issue
12.) I fully understand where Nancy is coming from and I hate that at this point the Hollands are wasting their time and money and are tearing themselves looking for Barb when she will never come home. That being said, Steve isn’t wrong here. There is a shadowy agency that literally killed a man and covered it up as a suicide and covered up Will’s disappearance with a fake body that resulted in a funeral. They could really put themselves and others in danger. And something not fully discussed in this scene is: literally what would they even say? “hey, long story short, your daughter was killed by a creature from another dimension and her body is still there but you can’t talk to anyone about it or get her back or anything. Anyway, thanks for the McDonald’s.” Like that would be worse and they probably would not believe it anyway.
13.) Steve doesn’t even say forget forever, he asked to pretend to be normal on Halloween for one night
14.) I adore Max and if I’d known her in middle school, I’d desperately want to be her friend
15.) ok but how did el go from not knowing what half of food is to knowing how to skin and cook a squirrel? Like who taught her to do that? Her skill level varies wildly
16.) Billy is the fucking woooooooooooooorst and if he hadn’t died in season 3, it would have been something I did on my own in fanfic. People wanting to save him is crazy to me. He literally ran a bunch of kids off the road with his speeding car as one of the first things in the show!!!
17.) Jonathan not seeing what his mom likes bob is kind of hilarious to me because there’s a non insignificant chance that’s what he’s like when he’s 40
18.) still love Jonathan and will being adorable bros
19.) why is Billy so greasy???? Did he lather in baby oil before doing a keg stand???
20.) It was Nancy’s idea to go to this stupid party in the first place but now that she’s going with Steve instead of Jonathan, its a chore. Like ma’am you could have stayed home or insisted on doing some other normal thing. And by you, I mean the Duffers could have made up their minds
21.) bob and Joyce dancing in the living room is so cute
22.) every time max appears on screen I grin and whisper, ‘that’s my girl’, especially when she jump scares boys
23.) hop broke a promiseeeee but also that small child was only out there for hopper to buy candy off of
24.) max lives on Old Cherry Road
25.) Mike hating Max for no damn reason is so annoying
26.) jump scared right into the upside down
27.) Jonathan shows up to the party. Forgot that happened.
28.) all Steve was trying to do was stop Nancy from giving herself alcohol poisoning and he did apologize. But then she shatters his heart.
29.) Steve did leave her at the party which sucks but idk how I would be able to do anything else if someone called me a killer and said our love was bullshit
30.) I forgot El visits Mike through the void
31.) oh hi demodog. I remembered you were found in a trash can but not that you technically show up in episode 2, although not like seen by the audience

Hi, it's the anon that requested the Tommy H + upside down content and I just want to tell you that it breathed life into me!! I was so bored doing an overnight at work so thanks heaps for it 😊 Can you please write some stuff for Carol now? I'm intrigued to see what she, Tommy and Steve would be like and if the two would get along with Jonathan and Nancy (+ Eddie and Robin)
AHHH OMG YES YOU. I LOVE YOU FOR THIS. I'm so happy that the last answer will help you pass time overnight. Let's see if this helps too! I can certainly try to write Carol into this. I might even throw in some bonus thoughts if that's okay?
I know this is gonna be a v.v long ramble, so here we go. Under the cut, loves!
Okay, so if we're still going off of the theory that s2 went entirely different, I feel like Carol would have shown up at the Byers house, most likely the same damn time as Billy. For his fight with Steve. I feel like Carol might stop Billy before he goes in and she's talking, trying to figure out what in seventeen blue fuckin hells is going on because Tommy's mother said he's not home and he's been gone for hours with Steve... SO... Steve walks out onto the porch and literally, all he can do is palm his face. He was not expecting Tommy to show and he definitely wasn't expecting Carol and Billy, who are now arguing on the front lawn.
lowkey feel like Carol figures out why Billy is there and reams him a new one because I feel like she's one of those girls who would be like "That's not protective, asshole, it's gross. Your step sister can date whoever the hell she wants. Stop being an asshole." so they're fighting on the lawn, it's getting heated and finally, Tommy walks out, plucks her up by her hips and totes her fighty little ass indoors because one of the kids thinks they've just seen movement in the treeline. Tommy points at the kids and tells her to watch them. She's pouty because she wants to be part of the action not trapped indoors, but she does it. Annnyway..
Billy and Steve are shoving each other out on the lawn and Tommy, bless his soul, he comes out to break up his boys, right? Welp.. Winds up punching them both, one in the nose, the other in the throat. Yep, he juju chops Billy Hargrove right in the fucking throat because he's trying to tell them that they have bigger fuckin problems than where Billy's little stepsister happens to be or not be. These chucklefucks FINALLY get indoors, the door behind them and Billy says something to Lucas and ROUND TWO. Carol's trying to grab the kids and keep them out of the way, I feel like she puts herself between Billy and Lucas because he's just a fucking kid why are you about to lay hands on him, fucker? - Anyway... The chaos that is the fight ends, right? Carol plucks the keys from Max and deems herself the driver. She has the kids finding whatever they can to patch up Steve and ice for Tommy's busted lip. Once she's barked out "CAR. NOW." in that mom voice, they're on the road.
When they get to where they need to be, the fight I mentioned before between Tommy and Steve starts. Billy -who she loaded up out of the goodness of her heart -aka, she decided he's helping whether he likes it or not when he comes to, is FURIOUS upon awakening and discovering that he's not home and he's had his ass handed to him by a literal child. In front of three people who go to school wtih him. So he starts fighting with Steve and Tommy and Carol gets on a chair and shouts them all down. "We're doing what the fuck I say, got it? Hey!" she's snapping her fingers, "Hey, look. There are children present you shitsticks. Children!" and this gets them focused. They wind up doing what I said before, going in the direction the Duffer Bros sent them originally. With the addition that now, you have Billy AND Tommy pouty and shit because they can't burn something. Carol actually throws up when she sets sights on one of the demogorgons. BUT BUT... she makes her first kill, a chair leg to the petal? Head? Mouth hole? ANyway, yeah.. She's giggling about it, Tommy's grinning like a dopey idiot, "That's my girl!" I feel like this night would unite them together? And by the end, after two or three very loud and shove-y verbal shouting matches with Nance upon her arrival, Even Carol and Nancy moderately get along.
fun fact here, I believe that Carol, Tommy and Steve already know of Eddie. Hawkins is a small fucking town there is no way they haven't somehow crossed paths, esp if Eddie was a first year senior in 84 like it's been said. I feel like maybe Carol was lowkey afraid of him bc he was taller, rumored to be mean and he was different. But then he sold Tommy and Steve some killer fuckin weed this one time and from then on, he became their weed supplier, though they rarely talked or anything, so they did but did not know each other, if you catch my drift? They got high together sometimes around S4 though.
Okay, after the big night in S2, Carol and Nancy kind of like... have this weird trauma bond where they shit talk and shove and fight but they won't let anybody else talk shit about either one of them? And when Carol, who goes on to work as a personal assistant at the local dentist or a hairstylist, hears about anything that's even a little weird, she has lunch dates with her 'buddy' on the Hawkins Post. I feel like by s3, they were all on their toes about the underside of their little town? So every weird thing they notice, they note it?
OKAY.. S3.. S3 brings in Robin. Robin and Carol do not get along well at first. Carol can't handle someone who rambles a lot, but she tries for Steve's sake bc she's his new friend. Carol is working a makeup counter in the summer, waiting on her cosmetology license to be done. So she works in the mall too. Also, so does Tommy, he works outdoors/sporting goods in a department store. Maybe they even work at the same store. And Billy, we know he's a lifeguard. I feel like Tommy and Steve pick up on him being flayed a little bit earlier than El seeing it, like they're all friends now, they're trying to drag the guy down a good man's path now, so they pick up on his shitty attitude and the weird quirks he's gained himself.
They think it's hardcore drugs at first and I feel like THIS.. this might lead to Tommy cornering Eddie, the two nearly fighting bc Tommy thinks Eddie's the only dealer in town. When he finds out billy hasn't been to Eddie for weed or anything in months, they're concerned and start tailing him.
Jonathan gets dragged into this shit too and he is NOT thrilled. Because he barely tolerates Steve most of the time, now they want him to make nice wtih Tommy the himbo supreme AND Billy Hargrove, an asshole of the highest order? They all tie up quite a few times, but when Dustin says he needs 'em, they're all right there. WEll, kinda.. Because Carol tips Nancy off on a few leads, none of which pan out, then Nance stumbles on her own lead and she and Jonathan are chasing down that. BUT BUT... They all wind up fighting together in the end, even if it turns into a chaotic clusterfuck that very nearly kills Billy and gets Tommy a dislocated shoulder and a concussion ( Idiot tries to headbutt one of the flayed, something happens, he headbuttts the car display instead but gets up fighting anyway because why not, his adrenaline is SOARING RN)... Robin is not sure what to think of these people like... at all. Carol winds up in sheer adoration because little Nancy is actually a gun-wielding bad bitch and she can respect it. But I feel like Carol, Tommy, Steve, Robin and Billy all being truth serum'ed is a HUGE fucking shit show, oh my god. Imagine at least 4 of them smoking together, then add Robin to the mix and oh my god.. Dustin is grumbling like a little old man the entire fucking time. They get turned around in the tunnels at one point and Tommy's like "I TOLD YOU IDIOT. THE BLUEPRINTS YOU LEFT UP TOP WOULD BE REAL FUCKIN GREAT RN."
Carol and Tommy argue four damn times during the battle in the mall. FOUR. Over who is breathing too damn loud, over who gets to throw the next firework, over anything. They actually go a week without speaking to each other after this? It's the funniest and longest argument they've ever had.
And then S4. They're off in college. Carol is studying for her first exam as a college student then she gets a call from Steve back in Hawkins. She and Tommy wind up driving back and crashing at Steve's house while they figure out what the fuck is going on and her first words upon hearing Dustin mentioned, "Is the kid just a breathing chaos attractor or something? Jesus christ."
Billy is still living in Hawkins. he's come out of his father's home, he's living with Susan and Max. He's trying to make amends with Lucas. When Jason shows up to talk to Dustin, he slams the door in Jason's face. Billy absolutely fucking loathes Jason on sight? Nobody knows why til Jason loses his goddamn mind after finding out Chrissy is the one who died then Billy shrugs. "Told you all he was a fucking psycho." to which carol retorts, "I guess it really does take one to know one?" and Billy flips her off.
After they find out where Eddie is hiding, this brings about the history between Eddie, Carol, Tommy and Steve + Billy. Steve and Eddie haven't seen each other in at least a year at this point and Steve's not the best with faces and he's been through LITERAL HELL ON EARTH, so he doesn't recognize him at first. Same with Eddie, who is just freaking the fuck out over what he's seen. When he pulls the knife, Robin and Carol are screaming at him to stop it. Eddie remembers Steve and backs down. Reluctantly, because he likes Tommy a little better? He knew him better because TOmmy bought more weed from him than Steve did. Steve got his shit from some fancy asshole in the city. Tommy would roll one up and smoke with him on the old run down playground at Forest Hills most nights. So they quickly realize what's happening.
Carol dubs it "The fuckening." She refuses to call it anything other than the fuckening. She's very unamused. Until Vecna tries to take her. Her song to come back is a song her mom used to sing her at night to put her to sleep. If Steve and Tommy hadn't remembered it though, whew..
Billy almost gets Vecna'd. And he almost gives in because seeing everything all over again is too much? Esp after having been flayed and maybe being flayed is what makes him more susceptible to it. Tommy remembers them driving around with Rebel Yell on full blast and on a whim gets someone to find the tape. Brings him out after three times playing it. Tommy then gets Vecna'd and Carol and Steve have to hum Dreams by Fleetwood Mac to him because it's the song his mom always sings to him when he's having a bad day or he's sick (Tommy and his mom are best friends, kay? fight me.) Steve is the last to get it and they almost never figure out his song til Nancy mentions that when he heard Stairway to Heaven on the radio one night when they were driving around, he hummed it and he kind of hinted that this reminded him of a time when his parents gave a shit... So they use this, bring him back around.
Now all of them are DONE. D O N E. with Vecna and his bullshit. They all try to stop Max from what she's planned. Carol even threatens to lock her up so she can't. But in the end, Max does it anyway. And the boat scene, oh god. They nearly tip the goddamn boat over at least six times arguing over who is going down and who isn't going down. Like I said before. Steve goes, then Tommy, then finally, dead last, Eddie jumps in but he is NOT happy about this shit.
i am IGNORING Eddie's death. We don't talk about brunoooo. So instead of that, when this is all done, everyone is back at Steve's place, patching each other and the kids up. The kids are trying to figure out a way to clear Eddie. Billy suggests somebody pretending to give an anon tip at the station about Jason. Then they look at him and he shrugs. "Guy's gonna be the next fuckin Manson anyway, it's not like we won't be savin lives." and Tommy tells them real quick that Billy's first suggestion was just to off Jason days ago when he first went after Eddie to start with he just never got a chance to catch the little shit alone.
I feel like Billy and Eddie become friends a little better.
Then the others show up. And the FINAL THING WE SEE is a huge circle in the woods, with all of these teenagers getting shitfaced and smoking a much needed joint together. as they should.
BONUS: Since I'm ignoring the fuckin dumb decision to kill Eddie -and kill Billy when they could have given him a damn good redemption arc, when Eddie finds out what they did to Gareth, Jeff and the other guy in Gareth's garage, Eddie, Steve, Tommy and Billy all roll up to Jason and the boys at the basketball court and they beat the unholy hell out of them.
i'm ignoring nearly all of the deaths and I realize this but honestly, it makes things inchresting for me? Annnyway.... this is just some of the stuff that could've been. I hope you enjoyed this novel length ramble from me, an actual idiot. THANK YOU SO SO SO SO MUCH FOR ASKING ME THESE QUESTIONS I HAVE BEEN BURSTING TO ANSWER THEM BUT I DIDN"T THINK ANYBODY WOULD WANNA HEAR.... <3

Not sure how things worked back in the 80s but in high school I took some core classes with students in the grade above me (I’m also in the US) I can’t remember exactly why but I know it had to do with the classes we took in middle school. I think we were able to jump ahead with the older kids if we were exceeding expectations while the rest took the class that was meant for that specific year? Something to that extent. In my HS algebra class, about half the students were in my graduating year and the other half were in the year above me, so maybe that’s how Hawkins was? Idk, the whole school timeline is so confusing. Tbh I don’t think the duffer bros planned out the kids’ ages/graduation years very well; it seems like they just made things up as they went along LOL
Yeah, I’m not sure how things worked in the 80s either, but I agree with you on the duffers not planning the kids’ ages/graduation years well. Honestly with some of the things I’ve seen, it wouldn’t surprise me if they just gave up on the details halfway through 😂 Truthfully I don’t even blame them from a writing standpoint as this stuff gets extraordinarily difficult/frustrating at times to plan out & keep up with, but as a consumer of the show I want to know these things so it’s a little like a double edge sword you know? Anyways, I digress.
Thank you for explaining your high school set up though! I can see it making sense, especially in a bigger school, but it’s still odd to me because that would hardly ever happen in my highschool. I’m sure it’s all just dependent on the size of the school & the classes, but like I mentioned in a previous ask/reblog, my classes were kind of like a ladder regardless of what you took in middle school. For example, freshman year you either went into a 1yr algebra class or a 2yr algebra class, but it was still algebra. After passing that class, then you’d go on to trig - which could be with people in the grade above you depending on which algebra you were in. From there you could go on to calc, but I never took that so I’m not sure if that was mixed or not. But with science, you were with your own grade all the way through unless you took an AP class. English was done with your grade and your grade only.
So like I said it’s not as normal in my experience to have mixed classes with other grades, but I put heavy emphasis on the fact that the difference could solely be due to school/class size. I do so bc I know my school was tiny as fuck. People talk about their schools being small with graduating classes being around 100…guys my graduating class was 13. The entire school - which housed pre-k through 12th grade - was maybe 500-600 kids.
We were TINY & I’m not joking in the slightest. I’m not going to give pictures of my yearbook, but pls believe me when I say it’s hilarious just how small my class was. & surrounding classes weren’t that much bigger. So yeah, while mixed classes aren’t normal from my perspective, my school also isn’t quite a typical high school.

Let’s discuss the Finn & Millie interviews.
If you are vouching for the interviews to be straight up bullshit, please read this. If you don’t, great, read it anyway. I’m hoping for discussion tho, so drop some asks if you have questions or disagreements. 👁👁
Okay, so in case you were unaware, very recently there were interviews that came out of finn and Millie gushing over how much m!leven there is this season. Like, a LOT of gushing.
So here’s the thing, I believe them! At least to some degree. There, I said it. Hopefully you guys don’t hate me over this. I’m just trying to be frank. Here, I will express my confusion over the duffers’ writing choices, present common writing choices in other stories, and PLEASE HELP ME I JUST DONT GET IT-
There’s no way they’d straight up lie to our faces about an important plot relationship like theirs, and as much as I believe some of the cast have to be told what to say when they have to steer around questions that give away too much, this just doesn’t seem like something they would have to lie about.
Something I’ve sensed since the beginning of the show was how obvious it was that M¡leven wasn’t going to be canon. And not even in a mean way. Without all the subtext and clues hinting at their romantic decline, I could really tell that they weren’t going to end up together because that’s just how show’s work. Tell me ONE fairly long-lasting show in which two characters got together in the first or second season and then STAYED together for the rest of forever. Come on, it’s just not plausible for a story to go on like that. It gets boring. And even if there’s ‘real life issues’ involved, it gets boring to watch them try to work it out! That’s why I’m so baffled right now that the duffers are still dragging out their relationship. I thought they might’ve known better than this.
For example, take enola holmes and Tewksbury. HELL YEAH THEYRE GONNA DRAG THAT SHIT OUT! It’s the relationship dynamics that get people to keep watching. Whether it be slow burn, or forbidden love, or friends with benefits or whatever the fuck! All of these dynamics exist because it gives the story stretch room to grow and develop the feelings and relationship. Room to make you want them to be together. For ST, you can argue that m!leven did have a dynamic that made us want them to be together, something along the lines of lost love (and then found), but the duffers seemed to write it in a way that really confuses me. I identified m!leven with the dynamic of young love, something that everyone knows doesn’t, or shouldn’t, last very long. Sorry to bring this up again, but they knew each other for a week, lost touch for a year, and boom. Relationship. How does that work when they know virtually nothing about each other?
I mean, sure, apparently m¡leven is working through ‘real issues’ in their relationship this season, which I’m excited for because it allows them to dive deeper into these mentioned plot holes in their love story, but come on. in s3 we SAW WITH OUR OWN EYEBALLS that they basically don’t get along unless they’re sucking face or are in mortal danger. (That’s an exaggeration, but you get what I mean. They just aren’t compatible and if anything, I liked the friends stage, or the yearning stage in which they THOUGHT they wanted each other instead of what’s happened in s3 and now :( bring them back.) as for the ‘married couple’ quote. Bro they are literally teenagers and it pAINS me to see the suffer brothers milk this relationship so hard. If what they say in these interviews is true, then either the subtext such as “The First I love You” song in the soundtrack, was all thrown out the window. Or it was just hinting at their “bumpy road of a relationship” this season. Which- ????GOD I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND.
And I don’t mean to undermine any of y’all’s theories on why finn and Millie said what they said. I just think we can’t let our preferences blind us from seeing what they’re telling us straight up. In case y’all didn’t know, I have a spider-man MJ mindset where if you don’t get too excited or raise your standards, you won’t be disappointed. Seriously, as much as I want to believe in byler and DO believe it, we can’t dismiss the facts just because we don’t like them.
BTW none of this means that the byler hints we expect won’t happen. Perhaps one of the ‘issues’ in the relationship is Mike being conflicted between his girlfriend and her fREAKING brother :o
