if wriothesley doesn't appear in any quest once we get to remuria, what even is the point?
the parallels between wrio and king remus are crystal clear. remus who descended upon meropis (a name very familiar to anyone who knows of the fortress of meropide) in his golden fortuna, the legendary ship of remus that is also called the bringer of civilization and glory (wrio who built a ship to deal with the misfortune upon fontaine) is an example of it.
wrio also has connections to hades with the cerberus motif as guardian of the underworld. it's curious that the tower in remuria is described not only as not built to receive heavenly oracles, serving as a guide to ships traveling between islands, but also as a border of reality and dreams. if this is not necessarily literal but a metaphor or allegory, it could fit very well with the idea of a portal between domains or realms, like life and death.
wriothesley also parallels another character in the genshin universe and that person is arlecchino. they were brought up as orphans, taken in by an institution with corrupted leaders, which they reformed and achieved a leading position of. and funnily enough, she has ties to purgatory (a place for punishment, much like the fortress). as i have said in another post, purgatory has been described by dante as a tower leading to heaven. but we also know that celestia in the genshin world is associated with the demon realm - archons being named after ars goetia, an anonymous grimoire on demonology. although the concepts aren't the same in theory, is it impossible that the game has used elements of both? wriothesley and arlecchino's themes are similar enough to overlap. even though i don't expect wriothesley to be lore revelant anymore, i do think his ties to remuria and his role as someone who punishes others for their sins, much like arlecchino, is very much purposeful.

Poll adventure (paventure? lol) Day 16: read the small story tidbit below the poll for more details, OR just vote based on initial impression
(✦ see past poll results + further information HERE (link) ✦)
Yesterday's poll decided that The Adventurer should offer to help the travelers with their broken wagon.....
~
After much internal deliberation (and some zoning out staring at butterflies), The Adventurer decides it would be best to offer his assistance. Technically, he IS still following his goal of not getting distracted, because theoretically it would make his journey much faster if he were able to catch a ride on a carriage. So really, this is all an ultimate big brain genius strategy for maximizing efficient travel.. Or, at least that sounds like a good enough justification to him.
Gathering up all of his social courage, he approaches one of the travelers fiddling with a broken wheel near the far end of the carriage and meekly asks if there's anything he could do to help.
The man was so focused on his task, he seems initially startled to look up and find someone near him. "OH..! Oh, uhh.. help? With the wagon?", he smiles pleasantly, gesturing towards a few wooden boards that are just out of his reach, "Sure, kid. If you could just hand me th-"
"Apologies, but we actually won't be needing your assistance, stranger." A taller man, surprisingly almost matching the stature of the Adventurer, suddenly slinks out from somewhere behind the carriage, sternly placing himself like a barrier in front of the man working on the wheel. Wheel Guy nervously averts his eyes, making himself smaller, silently resuming his work.
The Adventurer tries his best to maintain composure against the weight of the tall man's bitter gaze, but can't seem to muster much of a response "Aeughh,,, uh… b-but, h- Bu--HHHh,,?.."
"Look, disregard whatever my father told you, he's old, never has any clue what he's talking about. It'd be best for you to simply move along." ('Father'? They don't look alike at all, and seem to be nearly the same age..)
"W-well.. he.. he didn't really tell me anything, I me-hhH,,.. I mean, I literally just got here, s-so...."
"Good. Even more reason to be on your way."
Placing a gloved hand firmly on his shoulder, the tall man begins to motion the Adventurer away from the wagon, but a strange noise interrupts, echoing from inside. Perhaps some sort of animal sound? Or a person faintly yelling about something? Or… both?
"WH-wHggg… whAT was t-that???!!" The Adventurer immediately stops in place, pausing to listen as the tall man keeps trying to push him ahead.
"I didn't hear anything, stranger."
"No, t-there.. was dEFinitely, UHH, a-"
"Likely something in the forest."
"Wh--aah... d.. do you think it was an animal?"
The tall man continues a dramatic struggle to 'subtly' drag him further down the road, whilst the Adventurer mindlessly digs in his heels, too distracted to even notice he's being so strongly prompted to leave.
"Many animals do, indeed, exist within forests. This should not be suprising."
"...It's just.. ..eughh… s… so weird…"
"I assure you, it is not."
"I-it really sounded like.. like it came f-from insid-"
"Yes, from inside the forest. Now, please, if you would.."
The noise interrupts again. It's definitely someone, or something, in some sort of distress.. And definitely from inside of the cart.
"wHoAAGH, aa!!! T-tHat's NOT from the f-forest, that-"
The tall man fully just shoves him now, sending the Adventurer toppling across the dirt, clumsily rolling and landing just past the other side of the carriage. A mother and young child who seem to be part of the traveling group simply stare down at him with empty blank gazes, wholly unconcerned about helping him up.
As the Adventurer fumbles back to his feet (still confused as to why he was even pushed in the first place), the tall man looms by the carriage, diligently watching to ensure that he leaves.
"Travel safe, stranger."
Despite his initial obliviousness, the Adventurer begins to piece the situation together as he stares back at the man, now fully convinced something suspicious might be going on...
…What should he do next??

So I wrote an entire essay explaining this character but Tumblr was a bitch and erased it so now I have to start over (whatever I'm not mad I'm not mad I'm not mad)
Some of you will remember that a while ago (like in May-) I made something called a "character theme challenge", where I posted a character theme from their series ost and asked people to reconstruct the character based on the theme. I posted this in like. June. And then didn't write the post revealing it. Oopsies. But since it's the last day of the year I figured some closure is in order. (Better late than never, right?)
Here is the post in question.
The character this theme is for is:
Norman from The Promised Neverland!!
How do I begin to describe Norman? The 14 year old sacrificial lamb who carried himself to the altar. Something the main trio in The Promised Neverland has in common is their tendency to sacrifice themselves for the sake of their siblings, but what makes Norman stand out is that well. He's good at hiding it. He hides his emotions and pretends all is fine when in reality he's dying inside. As soon as he's away from earshot of the other characters he breaks down. Which can be heard in this song in the form of the calm, melancholy melody that slowly builds up and explodes with emotion. Its bittersweet, because while Norman himself believes he can't be saved, all he needs is one single lifeline to keep him going. He truly wants to live. The violin and piano also add a feeling of grace, which is perfect for his M.O. He does things with careful planning, always thinking five steps ahead and taking the safest route, which is a contrast to Emma and Ray who do things a bit more impulsively.
@demon-sterrr participated in this challenge, and they were able to identify the tragedy in the theme, as well as the underlying hope present. They also mentioned the song reminded them of water, and gave their character a lotus theme :3 (which although it doesn't have a lot to do with Norman, it is similar to his blue-white color palette, which is interesting):
This was closer to the character than the other character theme art trade I'd made, and I think that has to do with the fact 22194 uses more traditional instruments, so it's closer to what you'd expect.
Thanks again to demon-sterrr for participating in this!!! (I know I took ages to post this haha. But it really was super interesting!) And happy New Year, everyone!

🔥 on malazan, if you don't mind!
[I'm ~1/3 done reading HoC for context]
oh hmm what's an actual unpopular malazan opinion? pretty sure "I would defend Felisin with my goddamn life" is at least a contested opinion on the subreddit, but most folks agree on that here uhhh. here's a few scattershot opinions, hope at least one of them are unpopular:
I do rather like the opening to House of Chains? I saw several people say they didn't like it/that Karsa wasn't interesting enough to carry it, and I don't know if that's the general opinion or an outlier that I stumbled upon but yk. disagree it was fun watching him fuck around and find out + the Silanda reveal (and the other worldbuilding stuff) was really goddamn cool. I wouldn't say it's in my list of favourite malazan parts but it's nowhere near the bottom
Siege of Capustan was a really compelling sequence, but between it and Toc's PoV, somewhere along the line the Pannions(' brutality) broke my suspension of disbelief a little? I've never really liked gorey evil empires though lol tbf
the malazan marine POVs are generally pretty solidly mid-tier for me? they're still good, just outclassed by the other POVs (so say Felisin in DG and Itkovian/the Envy entourage in MoI)
I get that this is more a "we didn't really have the opportunity to see it" thing than anything else bc clearly it does happen (Felisin on the transport ship to the otataral mines) but I wish it wasn't mostly non-Malazans perpetrating (onscreen) sexual violence not sure on the implications on that one. ...although I have seen something to the implication that these books are in part in-universe propaganda? nvm going to reserve judgment on this one

this one’s about a single father who likes baking and a coworker who gets Obsessed With Him (the sweets he bakes). I really like it because it’s like… standard but weird. the love interest has such strong arospec vibes. like this goes into spoilers, but in ch 2 he makes a business presentation about why they should get married. and most of the romantic development happens after that because he actually proposes in chapter 1 (the love interest really likes sweets). as a warning, weight doesn’t come up with the main characters much but there’s a fair amount of talk about weight and dieting with secondary and tertiary characters (the daughter in particular). other than that, it’s been one of my favorites

Pt. 4 Salamander Hunting (finale?)
Charles fixes each boy with a blanket in the den while Ollie doles out teas and hot cocoa. Once everyone is settled around the fireplace, Saige opens his arms for Ollie to join him in his blanket. "Saige," Riley hisses. "Boundaries," he mouths. He closes his blanket around him with an apologetic look.
"So what do you boys get up to when you're not terrorizing the local amphibians?" Charles smiled politely, starting with Riley.
"I've been taking classes online. Film Studies and Cinematography mostly." Charles nods and moves onto Saige. "I'm learning to cook! I used to burn water but now I can make pasta carbonara."
"I might bother you for your recipe. And Ardrian? How about you?"
The grand room all of a sudden feels to warm for Adrian. He runs his hands through his stupid haircut and stares down at his mud speckled ankles, trying to think of what to say. He didn't want to tell Mr. Charles about the tv show. Someone like Mr. Charles wouldn't stoop as low to watch such mindless drivel. He wishes hed been placed with a master half as elegant and poised as Mr. Charles rather than the troupe of hooligans he was stuck with. His jealousy towards Ollie is so overpowered by embarrassment and shame that he excuses himself before the tears can leave his eyes.
"Ollie darling, why don't you go check on your friend while I keep our guests entertained."
Ollie nodded and followed Adrian, grateful that he was allowed to make sure his friend was okay. Master Charles was so nice. Most people didn’t care about the feelings of a slave.
He found Adrian in a hallway, crying.
“What’s wrong? Is there anything I can do?”
Adrian sniffled. “’m fine. Just go back to your master.”
Ollie sat down next to the other pet. When Adrian scooted away, Ollie scooted closer.
“You aren’t fine. I just- I just want to help you. What happen? Was it something he said?”
Adrian shook his head.
“Then what? What happened?” When Ollie didn’t get a reply, he began to tear up. “Is it me? I know I’m annoying. I’m sorry. You must hate me. Please, I’m sorry! I can be quiet from now on. I can be less… less… I don’t know. Just tell me what you want me to do!”
“Jesus, Ollie, I don’t want you to do anything. You’re fine, I’m not mad at you. I promise. You aren’t annoying. I just…” Adrian sighed and gestured around the room. “You live in a place like this! And you look like that! I’m not mad at you, I’m… jealous, I think.”
“Jealous?”
“Hmm. I guess not. More like, not happy with my station. My owner and his crew aren’t exactly proper. They act… not how I expected. What I’d give to have a life even half as good and perfect as yours. An owner like Mr. Charles. Nice clothes. Good hobbies, not just working on the show.”
“Ooh, a show? That can’t be bad.”
Adrian rolled his eyes and Ollie shrank back.
“It’s not the kind of thing Mr. Charles would approve of. If he knew what I did with my time… I don’t know. I want him to like me. I want to stay as long as I can hear, in a warm, comfy house.” Adrian shot Ollie a glance and quickly added, “Not that I’m trying to take away your master’s attention or anything! I promise, I wouldn’t do that to you. I only meant that I don’t want to be thrown back out into the creek. I like being his guest, but I won’t take your place.”
Ollie’s face eased. “Thank you. I’m glad that you don’t want that.” Then, in the quieter voice, Ollie added, “It’d be really easy if you did.”
Adrian frowned. “Hey, no. I’ve seen the way he looks at you. You aren’t as hatable or replaceable as you think.”
Ollie gives Adrian a smile, but it doesn’t reach his eyes.
“Thanks. That’s very nice of you to say. Now, do you want to come back and face everyone? Mr. Charles was planning on having cookies for dessert tonight.”
Adrian smiles brightly. “That sounds wonderful, Ollie. Thank you for being a good friend.”
Adrian watched how his words made Ollie glow. This time, his smile wasn’t fake. In fact, Ollie was grinning from ear to ear as he tackled Adrian into a hug.
“Thank you!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. And you’re great too!”
Adrian grins back, and they walk together back to the warm room where there’s cookies and friends waiting for them.
