Braime fic rec list part 2 (once again in the order I read them)

Alright, let’s start right away...

I don’t think I need to say much about @sigilbroken’s amazing stories. But I do need to tell you that my absolute favorite is the “In This Light” series. I love everything in these stories, but especially the Jaime-characterization. He’s so ‘raw’ for lack of a better word, as if his soul was laid bare for us. A perfect example of how beautiful writing meets a great plot.

@ladyinredfics has written so many great fics and I must mention at least four of them here, starting with the epic “Battle is the Great Redeemer”, which should be included in all Braime fic rec lists. Because it’s a genius way to fix the eighth season, because we get an amazing Arya/Jaime friendship in it (I especially love how Arya takes so much joy in killing Jaime over and over again. Lol) and because it is that good. Then there’s the fic “The Gift”, which is a truly magical story and a wonderful gift for any Braime fan. But my absolute favorite story is “Little Lion Man”. This one is so precious and adorable and simply purrfect! I love a great ‘Brienne or Jaime is turned into an animal for a time’ plot and this one is at the top of its game!

The third author is @angel-deux-writes whose writing is out of this world because she combines creative plots, perfect characterizations and great pacing with pure talent. We need to talk about quite a few of her stories here. First her series: “two halves of a sword” is a two-part series with the same story written both from Brienne’s and from Jaime’s POV. And this is done utterly brilliantly because the two fics complement and add so much depth to each other. It is writing ability at its best! Then there’s the five fics in her series “we should kind of forget about season 8”, each one of them proving that angel-deux should have written the damn eighth season and we would have all loved it! Also, don’t even ask me which of these five is my favorite as I couldn’t tell you. Because married Braime pining for each other! Because Jaime as king! Because bloody amazing Jaime/Sansa friendships (even though I’m not normally a big Sansa-fan). *chef’s kiss* Her third series is “Deliverer”, in which Brienne and Jaime have a daughter. This one will hurt, but then it will also mend your heart, and you’ll be left smiling at the adorableness that is Jaime with Cat and Brienne with Cat and Jaime with Brienne and all three of them together. As for her single stories, I definitely need to mention “for beauty is found within” because it’s the most perfect Braime/Beauty and the Beast mash-up with everyone being completely in-character. As well as her epic “Honor Compels Me”, which is not only one of the longest Braime fics in existence, but also one of the very best - holy heck, what a journey and emotional ride she’s taking us all on here! Sigh, I could go on and on, as there are so many more: You’ll find everything from Brienne being a spy over Braime accidentally getting married to Jaime temporarily being de-aged. Just make sure to read them all…

For these rec lists, I mostly choose authors who have stopped writing or are on a break (I really do hope that most of them are just on a break), but this time I needed to make one exception and mention Ealisaid as my last rec for today. Not only because “Valiant” was the gift I received for the Braime fic exchange this year, but also because it was a pawfect story! The characterization of Jaime and Brienne was on point and, on top of that, it’s all shown through a dog’s POV, whom you’ll all fall in love with on the spot.

Saying all that, just head over and read all the stories of these authors because my rec lists are too small to include all the magic they create.

2023 Fic Stats

February 2023, I decided to start tracking the amount of fic I read. I travelled a lot last year, quite a bit more than normal. I read a lot of fic when I travel.

I did a half year update at the end of June 2023. Between February and June, I read just under 13 million words.

February through December, I read just over 30 million words and 2,049 individual fic (though several are the same fic on a reread).

Christmas Season starts after Halloween I think, so I was in the mood for nice Christmas stories and made a list for everyone feeling the same!

As the popular saying goes I suck at summaries, so they are straight from the author on AO3.

Jaime Lannister: Christmas Miracle by LeoSapphirus Brienne breaks her leg before the holidays and is forced to cancel her plans. She expects to spend Christmas alone. Jaime isn't having any of that.

Office Christmas Party by LSquaredSTL Brienne is frustrated - her job is keeping her from going home for the holidays and she can't stand her co-worker, Jaime. The office Christmas party changes everything.

ugh I'm simply too nosy for this game because so many I wanna know about 👀 but what about live, die, repeat for the WIP game, that sounds intriguing

omg sissi i know exactly what you mean-- i am so nosy and also impatient so it's a bad combo for this game lol.

Live, Die, Repeat is the working title for a theoretical Edge of Tomorrow AU that is sitting on the furthers of back burners currently. hopefully it will be coming closer to the forefront in the new year, though. so far, i only have a list of characters and the roughest fucking sketch of a premise imaginable so i unfortunately do not have much to share-- although, cassian would be Emily Blunt's character (at least i think.... it could change, but it makes sense in my head). one of her character's nick-names is the Angel of Verdun and then the other on is Full Metal Bitch, so i was considering having one of Cass' nick-names be like 'the Demon of Dantooine' and 'Full Metal Bastard' lol. Jyn would be Tom Cruise's character. Bodhi is obviously the scientist who is helping Emily Blunt out, etc etc.

it's funny because a similar concept has been explored in the amazing, amazing fic We've Been Here Before by angel_deux. absolutely phenomenal and painful and beautiful, but i just want to put a possibly more fun, corny sci-fi spin on it lol.

here is literally all i have written for it so far:

Cassian gives her an impatient look, throws his hand out to the side in question. “Do I have something on my face?” She swallows, shakes her head. I’ve seen you die 64 times. “No,” she whispers. April recs

In a shocking turn of events, I'm posting my recs EARLY this month instead of procrastinating! May the Fourth be with you!

About half the stories in this set are Star Wars, because I finally watched Andor and it was AMAZING; the other half are DCU, because I am predictable when sick (Tim + Batfamily h/c my beloved). Plus a Leverage/Old Guard crossover!

STAR WARS

To Climb by Nock_and_Bolt

“Climb,” Kino urged others to escape a prison he never would.

“Climb!” Nemik screamed past multicolored explosions and his own crushed spine.

“Climb!” K-2SO’s voice juddered out over the intercom, punched from mechanical lungs by blaster fire.

And what else could Cassian do but be borne up by the bodies of those that had gone before him?

Brutally good, full of the parallels and motifs in from Andor, all woven into Cassian's final climb in the tower at Scarif. It WILL make you cry in the best way.

Coping Mechanisms by mosylu (Cassian/Jyn)

It takes a heat wave for Jyn to notice that Cassian never, ever goes barefoot.

Intimate and sweet if-they-had-lived look at Cassian's trauma from the Narkina 5 prison.

Kino Lives by ad_asterism

Set at the end of Andor Episode 10: "One Way Out". Kino fucking gets to live.

Look, a girl has needs, and those needs include reading every single Kino fix-it for Episode 10 on AO3. This was my favorite by far, I think maybe because it *doesn't* involve Cassian? The episode ending was the right ending for that arc in Cassian's story, but this fic picks up the thematic threads and weaves them into off a very Star Wars escape for Kino. It could use some more love - possibly the very basic title and summary kept people away - so don't forget to comment!

No Survivors by elwenyere (Cassian/Melshi)

It had been three standard years, two months, and twenty-five days since Melshi had made himself walk away from the man he’d known as Keef Girgo.

Great mid-mission reunion for Cassian and Melshi, their slowly growing attachment and exploration of Cassian's trauma are beautifully written, and the plot starts to poke at the roots of Rogue One.

Personal Effects by mosylu

Spies travel light. Even so, Cassian Andor left things behind.

A neatly drawn outsider-POV character study, as the Rebels clear out the belongings of the Death Star's dead. This fic's older, but felt very matched in tone with Andor.

A Proud, Unpleasant Sort of Man by angel_deux (Han/Leia, Cassian/Jyn)

It takes Cassian Andor and Han Solo an embarrassingly long time to realize that they aren't each other's rivals.

Funny and sweet post-Rogue One everybody-lives AU.

DCU

Inscribed on Body & Soul by drowningfire

Jason Todd died knowing he was loved. His resurrection took even that from him. Turns out he came back to life needing saving just as much as he did when he left it. Thankfully the Bats and Birds have always specialised in impossible rescues. And while love can't fix everything having proof of it can't hurt.

AKA In a world where the names of those who love you inscribe themselves upon your skin, Jason's resurrection plays out a little differently.

Lovely platonic soulmates AU with lots of feelings and angst for everyone in the family, just the way I like it.

Gloved fingers close over Tim’s throat and slowly begin to squeeze.

“Jason!” he gasps, choking. “Have you ever read Macbeth?”

The Red Hood stares at him like Tim just slapped him with a fish.

With his grades slipping, Tim worries Bruce will take Robin away. So when the Red Hood breaks into his room with the intent to kill him, Tim decides it's a good idea to ask him for help on his English homework. It works. And then it doesn't. And then Tim solves a mystery and almost dies anyway.

The summary makes this sound kinda cracky but I actually loved the plot. (Tim, how is your life just SO disaster? It's really a talent.)

Little Red and the Big Bad Hood by CrzyFun

Olivia Draper had been a good idea at first. She could pass for older than Tim could pull off while masculine and women really could get into places easier if they had a pretty face. With makeup and some stylish-yet-inexpensive clothes, Olivia could pull off most undercover ops. She was Tim’s Matches Malone.

Then Hood had shown up on the scene.

Charming AU with tons of identity porn as Jason grudgingly big-brother-adopts genderfluid Tim while he's undercover.

For the Sick and Dying by GoAwayOlivia

It’s been a while since Jason has felt this bad. He’s used to being bruised and aching, used to broken bones and lacerations of all sizes and depths, but it’s been a hell of a long time since he’s been sick, and he’d honestly forgotten how much it sucks. His family isn't exactly helping matters.

In which Jason is hilariously dramatic about being sick. I enjoyed the hell out of this while actually sick, but I think the appeal is universal.

The last (but certainly not least) story I have for you is a delightful Leverage/The Old Guard crossover, which was the funniest thing I read all month.

The Fountain of Youth Job by BazinMousqueton

The Leverage: Redemption team are hired to investigate Merrick Pharmaceuticals following a suspicious death in South Sudan. They embark on a con, infiltrate Merrick’s HQ… and find some unexpected prisoners in his research lab.

This one is more accessible for Leverage-only fans than TOG-only fans, I think, but it has a pitch-perfect grasp on the Leverage crew (Redemption era) and a great con setup - which gets partially and hilariously derailed when they find Joe and Nicky.

One of the reasons I’ve had so much fun with maybe everything that dies someday comes back is that I’ve been trying to write a zombie apocalypse AU since I was fifteen - attempted it in at least five fandoms - and this is the first time I’ve actually come close to pulling it off! and in The English, a fandom I never expected. (I’m not counting my Kingdom fic, because zombies are just canon there.) It did get me thinking about my other favourite zombie apocalypse AUs out there (no Marvel Zombies for me thank you) and so I made a list:

Better Natures by etirabys (Daredevil | Frank/Karen | E | 37,582 words)

This happens to be both my favourite zombie apocalypse AU and favourite Kastle fic out there. When a zombie outbreak spreads in New York, Frank asks Karen to come with him. They both turn out to be incredibly good at surviving the apocalypse. Not just about the zombies but also the rebuilding and sustaining of community in the aftermath - also, just, fake-married couple with electric chemistry, we love to see it.

for the darkness, she will come by angel_deux (Game Of Thrones | Jaime/Brienne | T | 23,057 words)

Technically GOT already has zombies in it but this is a modern Walking Dead-esque AU in which Brienne is similarly tasked to transport Jaime so he can be exchanged for Sansa and Arya and the four of them end up travelling together. Jaime loses his hand because it got bitten by a zombie and Brienne has to cut it off.

Many Forms of Resistance by amalnahurriyeh (Sociology RPF | Gen | T | 2,323 words)

When their conference is crashed by zombies, C. Wright Mills and Michel Foucault end up on a cross-country motorcycle road trip from New York to Berkeley. Mills rides, Foucault shoots. In between they argue about the theoretical outlook of the zombie apocalypse. “But this story you tell, Wright, it is totalizing, no? Is not the zombie an act of resistance against the anomie you describe? For the zombie is himself a proactive being, who goes out, joins collectively with others, and seeks to capture what he does not have - that is, the brain.” I hope this author got their PhD.

in famine, in feast by bysine (GOT7 RPF | Jaebeom/Jinyoung | T | 38,362 words)

Full disclosure: bysine is my old zombie AU writing buddy (she came up with the Pulser technology that I’m using in maybe everything that dies someday comes back) so naturally I’d rec anything by her, but. This is a spectacular AU based on the period zombie K-drama Kingdom, in which Jinyoung is the exiled crown prince and Jaebeom his mysterious bodyguard and they must both thwart the zombie threat as well as court intrigue. I don’t even know anything about GOT7 but I loved this fic - think Regency vibes but it’s set in the Joseon era and also there are zombies.

13: Oh, my goodness. Listen. I have read and fallen in love with more fics than I can shake a stick at. I've been reading for a very long time, but I will give you as best an answer as I can. If you aren't familiar with @tmnt-tychou When Leo Met Mona, you should start there, since I'm gonna assume since you're asking me you are in the TMNT fandom. - I love her work and the way she writes romances with the turtles, and I know she's impacted my writing because I have a whole fic that has one of her characters in it.

I have really enjoyed @afreakingdork 's work, TMNT fandom as well - they're one of those writers that twists things in interesting ways and withholds information, and I love how I'm always kept on my toes while reading.

Oh, Son of A- by StrivingArtist on AO3, Hobbit fandom (Fili/reader) - I love this story simply because the author took a long break in the middle, and then came back and finished it. It's completed, and the story is funny as all get out. Took that 'modern girl falls into middle earth trope' and knocked it out of the ballpark. I still cackle over it.

Eidolon by Llanval on AO3, Marvel fandom- unfinished, but poetic, the imagery and storytelling is startlingly haunting. I would go out on a limb and say the author was a fan of E.T. Hoffman.

Alabanza by brandyllyn on A03, star wars (Poe/reader) - it's just a romance that really stuck with me, and I thought it had a really interesting take on how Poe actually meets reader.

Lost Valor; Forgotten Stars by rinskiroo on AO3, star wars (Poe/ofc) - this is a fic that I still don't understand fully to this day, but I know it was drawing on lore from multiple points in star wars history. I would read it again, probably will this weekend. Really highlights the difference between the resistance and the rebellion.

Earning my Wings by warqueenfuriosa on AO3, star wars (poe/reader) - I really connected with this reader, and gosh darn this fic is just funny. and believable.

anything shootybangbang on AO3 writes. They were someone I found while deep into red dead, because we both explored the same imagery on the duality of man and beast. The way they write poetry into their stories is just mesmerizing.

We Were Only Ever Stardust by PardonMyManners on AO3, rogue one fandom - oh this one made me cry. I was really into how the RO fandom took star crossed lovers and found family and just drove a knife into everyone's heart with it

Theres a whole rogue one series by angel_deux on A03 that starts with a fic called Hard to be Soft. I found it 6 days after the movie released and read the whole thing whenever I could. Another one I'll have to reread soon.

19: Well, reading fanfic is how I became a fanfic writer, and definitely played a part in how I’ve gotten better at writing. To be very blunt, what I consumed usually found its way into my own writing. There were definitely fics that I read that made me realize what I did and did not like, and there were just as many ideas that captured my imagination as those I shunned. There were writers whose style I admired, who twisted words and withheld information in a way that caught my interest. There were characterizations I had no care for, for sure, and moments where I didn’t fully understand what the writer was trying to get across to their audience, but on a whole I always felt there was something to learn from whatever I had decided to read, and my writing responded like a puzzle picked from many different people over many different years.

I feel like this answer is maybe a bit meandering and not very precise, but please be aware I’ve been reading fanfic for almost two whole decades, across fandoms and platforms, and so I don’t remember things very vividly, but my writing is a timeline of who I was at the time.

We’re starting off with one my favourites. It has everything: Rebelcaptain, angst, humour, it’s long as hell and beautifully written. What’s not to love?

Description: The series is divided into 13 parts: that includes 6 main missions and 7 interludes.

The author describes it as “continued misadventures of Rogue One”, and that summarises it pretty well: the plot is incredibly well-constructed and addictive, and the romance bit is *cheff’s kiss*. Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster, though.

I remember reading the last mission and being absolutely unable to put the story down, there is sooooo much going on, both in terms of action and feelings. But the angst is really well-balanced with some fluff and really good humour.

1. step into the stoplight by phantomphaeton. A modern Jonsa AU with Actor!Jon and Journalist!Sansa (they’re just so cute)

2. A Circlet of Weirwood by Kitkatkailey. It's a sequel to a crown of iron, and it's great. Also it's just wholesome, unapologetically Queer, and has fun with itself.

3. A Caged Songbird by Bikadou. Another Sansa marries Joffrey except it segues into Jonsa (and she murders Joffrey)

4. fighting furies; the starks revenge by @dialux...Time travel, Jonsa, drama, and a fandom staple for this brand.

5. The North Remembers by HalfbloodDragon. Time travel (don’t say i don’t have a brand), Theon/Sansa, dramatic, well written, I screamed at least six times.

6. Servants of the Gods by fvckingaphrodite, our fandom fave. It's not strictly Sansa related, but I feel like anyone with complaints about the show should give it a go so long as you READ THE TAGS, I cannot emphasize this enough, READ THE TAGS.

7. Honor Compels Me by angel_deux. OH MY GOD, like Robb is alive, but he pulled a Lady Stoneheart, Jonsa, Jaime becomes penpals with Sansa. There is Robb/D@ny but it's not apologetic and you do get an Independent North. But The angst? Immaculate.

8. I Am A King, I am a Fraud by thesuspisouslyflyingjellyfish. *screams into pillow* sansa pretends to robb.

9. Girlhood is like Godhood, A Begging to Be Believed by @thesuspiciousflyingjellyfish which by the way WOW! Commoner Sansa! with a mix of gods behind her and minor character appreciation.

10. The Red Queen by bikadoo. HOLY SHIT screaming, crying throwing up, please read this, holy fuck, i'd read it just for the sequel to it too.

Any apostate fugitive power couple fanfic recommendations?

Apologies for the late reply, anon 😅

Unfortunately I don't have that many fanfic recommendations when it comes to apostate fugitive power couple Handers ... however, there are two that come to mind:

for who would lose, though full of pain, this intellectual being by angel_deux

This fic explores the premise of Tranquil!Anders (but don't worry, it's angst with a happy ending!) and although technically it doesn't really explore Hawke and Anders' relationship as an "apostate fugitive power couple", it does happen post-DA2 where Anders and Hawke are on the run together, even though early on Anders gets captured and made Tranquil. I like this fic because of it's approach to Tranquility and what it would be like recovering after being cured of it. The earlier angst also made me legit tear up because it was so heartbreaking. I also really like the author's approach at giving Cullen a "redemption arc" -- I found it much better than the half-assed redemption arc that BioWare wrote for him in DAI.

2. The Hate That's in Your Head by Ember_Keelty

This fic isn't really centered on Hawke and Anders -- the main POV character is the child of Cullen and Amell, however this fic does not try to approach Cullen's character in a positive light (in fact you could argue he is an antagonist, and a very well-written one). The writing in this fic is quite good, it's pro-mage, and Hawke and Anders appear towards the end of the fic as a pretty awesome fugitive power couple hiding from the Chantry.

Sorry if I wasn't really able to recommend anything that really fit the fugitive apostate power couple criteria! 😅 Perhaps other Handers fans can add on to this post with their own recommendations.

Fic Stats Halfway Through 2023

Haven’t had time to do a WIP Wishlist since round 20 in April. Am still reading and slowly commenting. Travelled for work twice as much in the first half of 2023 as I did all of 2021 and 2022 combined. Loads of downloading and reading offline.

In February, I randomly decided to track my fic reading this year. Have some stats as of the end of June. I haven’t read a single fic that doesn’t contain Jaime x Brienne. Sometimes paired with others, too. Haven’t been this monofannish in years.

I read fast, comment slowly, and write rec posts even slower. Not an official rec post, but I recommend everything and everyone in these lists.

Limitations: I know I haven’t written down all the fic I’ve read. I’d say at least 90% of it is in the spreadsheet. None of the lists but one include WIPs or they would dominate everything because I reread with every new chapter. I obsessively reread things. Top authors may appear more times than they have number of fic. Means I’ve reread some of their stories at least twice. I am awful at spreadsheets and manage only the most basic information. Absolutely no pretty charts either.
