one of the most least-important, yet favorite things about the witcher for me is that i initially felt the usage of latin to add emphasize in the characters' dialogue was, if you'll forgive me, pretentious, in a word, and strange outside of the mouths of characters who were intellectuals and scholars.
until i began to read interviews with sapkowski, and a little bit of his other writing, during which i realized, no, he just talks like that, peppering in aphorisms, sayings, and phrases in latin and other languages. and then the habit became less pretentious to me and, instead, endearing, as it made me realize that the characters, in fact speaking in the altered voice of their author, haven't been altered, but rather are the result of a natural flow of thought and storywriting...

Chaotic Even in Literary Preferences
The house was quiet and undisturbed as Sam came through their front door. Their front door. Every time he thought about those little changes he and Darlin' would make in their words as they spoke about their home, Sam could feel his heart flutter in his chest. Toeing off his boots, he took a look around as he always did now that Darlin' lived here. He never seemed to miss the minuscule trinkets littered about as minimalistic decor; soaked in everything from stray, lone sock that would remain on the floor when the Shifter would mumble something of their feet feeling trapped in prisons of fabric until they'd realize they were missing one from their laundry and search around for it, to the rubber duck that had apparently taken its respectful post inside the fridge.
Sam still wasn't certain of the story behind it, but thought from time to time about whether or not he should ask. Only to get very slightly distracted by deciding on a name. He'd been pondering on "Bill" for a while, a name that was both simple and strong, but also showed a little more of that playful side of himself that only so many people had the pleasure of seeing.
He had shrugged off his jacket and hung it on the coat rack to his left, catching a glimpse at the coffee table in the livingroom. A curious crease found its way between dark brows as his gaze meandered across the array of books scattered across the tabletop. From Moore's 'Bark' to Tolkien's 'The Fellowship of The Ring,' Jones's 'Howl's Moving Castle' to Christie's 'And Then There Were None.' There was quite the collection strewn about before him—including an extremely well-loved copy of 'The Last Wish,' the first book in Andrzej Sapkowski's book series 'The Witcher.' One of Darlin's favorites, Sam recalled, barely needing the visual proof given the insight he'd received from Asher. He smiled at the chaos, admiring for a little bit longer just how it wound up there, before he made his way to the kitchen to check the mail.
Just as always, he plucked an obnoxiously bright colored envelope from the small pile and didn't even need to strain his eyes to find the sender's name, already knowing full well that it was from Angel. Even though he was in the mates group chat, Angel had declared to "spare his old fingies" and send him memes and screenshots from the group chat he was in, by mail. He had to give them credit: it's been months since Angel had taken this task upon themself. It seemed this whole Shaw pack was filled with members whose names could easily be synonyms of the word 'dedication.'
Had he not been a vampire, Sam never would have heard the near-silent footsteps growing nearer from their bedroom. He'd fully expected to be met with the classic "Howdy, Cowboy," or a "How'd the meetin' at 'Wonder-Ranch' fare today?" What he didn't expect and, frankly, wasn't prepared for, was to watch his Darlin' wander out into the kitchen, grab a quick snack of pretzels, and pivot towards the livingroom to have a seat on their bloodstain-free couch—all with their nose and attention buried between the pages of a book. For a few minutes, Sam said nothing as he only watched them curl up in their corner with their small bowl of pretzels and those gorgeous eyes completely lost in each word.
He caught brief sight of the cover wondering if he'd recognize a familiar title or design. He didn't.
"What'cha got there?" Sam asked softly with a gentle smile tugging at his lips. He chuckled and apologized when he saw them start at his sudden words, like he hadn't been here since they migrated.
"'Ts a book," they replied, pressing a pretzel to their smirking lips as they waited for his estimated response:
"Obviously, you wise-ass," Sam smiled a little wider and rolled his red-flecked silver eyes, making his way to join them. "I mean what type of book?" They exhaled through their nose, peering mischievously over the top of their novel.
"A hardcover," already knowing the outcome they had instigated, Darlin' preemptively slid their bookmark between the pages and snapped it shut as they used it as a shield from the pillow their mate had grabbed and thrown at them. They laughed at his reaction—something that still felt a bit foreign to them, but they were starting to get used to feeling so happy they'd let it show. They readjusted the pillow to use it as a table nestled between their crisscrossed legs, pulling the book away from their face and idly brushing a callused thumb over the lightly textured cover.
"It's 'I Am The Messenger' by Markus Zusak," Darlin' finally shared. "I wanted to finish reading at least one of the books I forgot I owned before moving in." Sam leaned forward with a chuckle and began straightening up the mess of books, putting them into small stacks.
"It was nice of David to swing them by," he said. Darlin' had expected their hardass Alpha would come around to check up on them at some point, but with an old box full of books they'd had before everything in their life turned into a shitstorm that hit the fan in a single night? If they had a penny for every time they guessed David would deliver to them a piece of who they were when things were okay, they would have a penny.
"Yeah..," they trailed off, their mind still humming with memories of Gabe taking them to the book store when they had gotten suspended for defending themself. A bittersweet smile settled on their lips. That was a good day.
They could just barely still hear his voice saying "go wild, kiddo! You won't find out what genre you like best just standing around,"
Almost, they could see the image of his goofy grin. The one he gave when he saw a flicker of a sparkle dance through their young eyes. Sam hummed, grasping Darlin's attention once more:
"Never heard of it," they were thankful he spoke before their thoughts could sour. With a smirk, they replied:
"Prob'ly 'cause yer too busy readin' li'l diddies like'Heartland'," Darlin mocked, not missing that smile and the eye roll that wasn't far behind as he shook his head.
"Okay, I'll give it to you," Sam chuckled, "that was a good one." His mate made a motion of tipping their imaginary hat and quirked their brow.
"Much obliged,"

Favorite 2022 First-Watches 🎬
this year, i've only managed to watch 173 films according to my letterboxd logs - that's already including rewatches. 2022 certainly fucked me in many ways i couldn't even imagine at the first place, which is part of the reason why i couldn't spare more time to watch more. 🥲
regardless, it's suffice to say that i've managed to broaden my horizon for a bit, discovering and finding unique films from many corners of the world, unrestrained by release dates or its mood and nature - highbrow, classy, unhinged, you name it; some of them eventually latched onto my mind and soul ❤
now i wouldn't be ranking these films in a particular order, but i will start with the ones that completely won me over and went straight into my all-time favorites!
these are the films i'd probably rate a perfect 10 if i had used the traditional metric score, but i don't review movies that way anymore 👇
Mikey and Nicky (1976), dir. Elaine May 🇺🇸
John Cassavetes and Peter Falk were best friends in real life - and simultaneously two of the best actors of their generation, so there's no doubt they were enthralling to watch in here. indeed, the film's power lies on their dynamite improvisational chops that chronicled the breakdown of their relationship over a night, fights and conversations filled up with intense emotions coupled together with May's minimal direction helped this film shined through and through. i'm definitely a sucker for character-driven movies, so hurrah 🙌
Love Letter (1995) dir. Shunji Iwai 🇯🇵
coincidences and memories of a deceased one can lead you to unexpected findings you took for granted at first, changing how you view that particular person in a different light. perhaps the 'contrived coincidence' trope has been done to death in every type of media imaginable - but due to the naturally-progressing plot that always keeps you interested and Shunji Iwai's directing, it feels very much fresh, not generic, and hits all the beats it's supposed to! Love Letter is blissful and warm, yet it's also a terribly sad tale about a love story that's almost meant to be. 💔
The Devils (1971) dir. Ken Russell 🇬🇧
god, if it isn't an over-indulgent picture (in a good way). to be more exact, it's about overzealous hypocrites indulging themselves in shameless immorality, shielding behind the tenets of Christianity to justify their actions. and they all went down in glorious flames, as depicted mercilessly by Ken Russell with the incredibly eye-catching set designs by Derek Jarman. while it's set in the Middle Ages when those deemed dark witches were guaranteed death sentences, I still think it functions effectively as a critique of the current state of 'religious' conservatives who are so blinded with hate for anyone but themselves. it's a lot of fun to watch, too, even if it does seem too cartoonish at times. (Oliver Reed, sexy and marvelous 💪)
A Snake of June (2002) dir. Shinya Tsukamoto 🇯🇵
Shinya Tsukamoto's films are basically when you combine Lynch's affinity for industrial-themed surrealness and Cronenberg's exploration of the human body transformation, only for their presentation and energy to be cranked up to 11. out of many Tsukamotos i've watched this year, A Snake of June fascinated me the most. i think this is when Tsukamoto's themes and trademarks really worked for me, because they synergize so much this time around; it's relentless in its exploration of self-destructive eroticism, creating a haunting yet sexually-charged atmosphere. it also left quite a lot to be analyzed due to its ambiguous nature (especially toward the end). endlessly rewatchable 👍
On the Silver Globe (1988) dir. Andrzej Zulawski 🇵🇱
a bit unfair to include this since it technically is an unfinished film, but this certainly was one of the most intense movies i've seen in a long time. the bleakness of the material is the foundation of the cinematic earthquake that would've been had it been completed, added with colorful costumes and dystopic set designs that contributes to the mystiqueness of the picture. the most prominent aspect, of course, is Zulawski's direction - while it may seem exhausting and annoying for some, in my honest opinion it certainly worked the way it's heading for. if i had to remake an existing film, it would be this one.

Liveblog: Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski

Context: I caught bits and pieces of several scattered episodes of the Netflix Witcher series while at my parent’s place, and have had my curiosity piqued! I’ve already read The Last Wish since then; you can find my thoughts here.
Further context: I don’t actually know anything about storytelling techniques. High school English classes were a long time ago, hah. But… I am currently actively trying to learn via observation. So! A lot of my comments are going to be on that topic: what I’m seeing, why I think it’s been done that way, how well I think it’s working, etc
Disclaimer: Names might be misspelled, and most quotes will be paraphrased. I’m reading via audiobook at work. That said… there should be a bit more cohesion this time, since I’ve decided to actively comment as I go rather than dump all the thoughts I’ve had after already getting 2/3rds of the way through the book, hah.

The Bounds of Reason
Getting a bit more insight into how Geralt generally expects to be treated (badly) and how he responds to a random friendly overture (positively), which is neat!
Sapkowski continues to write about women in ways that make me wince. Is it the end of the world? No. Is it rife within fiction? Yes. Do I have to appreciate it? Also no. Am I going to largely ignore it because it isn't a conversation I'm interested in carrying, and has been carried out much better by other folk? Also yes.
Oh hey! This is a storyline from an episode that I did catch snatches of. Wasn’t paying the closest attention though, not sure how well I followed the plot. The one guy is the gold dragon, and Yennefer wants her own biological baby? And everyone is very upset and argumentative at the end.
Good grief, what the hell did Geralt do to Yennefer? They seemed to be on genuinely positive terms at the end of The Last Wish, even if in the framing narrative (Voice of Reason) it was pretty clear they weren’t anymore… guess I was just expecting to see the cause of the falling out more directly than this?
Unless I genuinely did just miss it because it was a sentence or two of “and after they were very sweet and Yennefer claimed to be touched, Geralt snuck off in the night without a word,” in which case. Mm. Well. There are drawbacks to reading via audiobook while at work, and brief lapses of attention when something that major is written that briefly is one of the biggest. :’)
If that is it, then good grief their positive interactions did not last long. 😂
Anyway!
…oh okay yeah we’re still somewhat touching on the theme of Geralt’s social life and the lack thereof.
Geralt’s here like ‘yeah half of them don’t like me, but at least they interact with me normally about it, so yes, I’m sticking around’ and that’s just. Oof. :(
Let’s see… Nenneke, Jaskier, those are both positive relationships, even if Nenneke fusses and annoys Geralt. He seemed pretty friendly with the Alderman in Blaviken but, well, that went down in flames. He calls Vesemir his father. He may or may not have kept in touch with that Not!Beauty and the Beast guy. Yennefer is complicated. That’s… about all we know of, so far?
And look, having only a few friendships isn’t necessarily a bad thing when those relationships are strong.
But it is pretty rough when nearly every other interaction in your life is fraught with tension and when you don’t so much as see those friends for semi-long stretches of time. :/
And then obvs. the hostility of the world is upsetting in its own right as well
Holy fuck. Uh. Yennefer does definitely have opinions about childbearing, doesn’t she. >_>; Ma’am you are… a bit tangled up inside.
I still… hm. I still don’t always quite follow Geralt’s reasoning, I’ll be perfectly honest. And not in the ‘why do you feel like this’ way that I grumbled about with Yennefer, that’s a perfectly common experience for me, but a rather more literal ‘genuinely what the fuck is motivating this I haven’t the faintest idea.’
Not sure if it’s a reading comprehension issue on my part… maybe I’ve just gotten too used to books that are a little more inside their POV character’s head?
Or it could be a translation issue with some nuances lost.
Or it could genuinely be an issue with & shortcoming of the writing. Idk.
Anyway in this case… why in the world was Geralt gearing up to go fight the dragon?
He’s spent the entire past book and the beginning of this book insisting that he doesn’t hunt dragons. He turned Yennefer down. Even if he hadn’t, he vaguely agreed with Dandelion’s request to try not to kill the dragon, so… that’s not going to get Yennefer what she wants? What is he hoping to accomplish?
Seriously I am lost. He says it’s because there are “limits to the possibilities I will accept” (murdered that paraphrasing but listen you know what I mean) and I’m just. What the fuck is that supposed to mean in this context???
Truly if any of you have thoughts I would be happy to hear them, hah

…Yennefer has both decided against dragon slaughter after all, and somewhat forgiven Geralt, and I don’t know the cause for either change of heart :’D
Well okay no she did seem touched by baby dragon. That bit makes sense. Still not sure abt Geralt though.
Much friendlier parting terms than I expected! That must have been a plotline invented for the show, or at least accelerated and included earlier than it might otherwise have been.

The nice thing about TopTracker for me is that it integrates with my iPhone to display and track my schedule, expenses, tasks, and goals. If you are looking for a Mac based task management solution, you should definitely take a look at TopTracker. TopTracker had been one of my favorite tracking software tools for a while now.

I Took You Home - Mutual Admiration
Summary: Reba has just found out she’s entertaining Charles Brandon her favorite TV Character
Word count: 1400
A/N Ok so this is fiction, and all that jazz but I wanted him to be a fan of Reba's too so they could be mutually invested rather than it just being her lol.

Reba was amazed and horrified all in the same breath, how had she not recognized him. For most of her young adult life, she had fantasized about Charles Brandon but never really looked into who the actor was. As a writer, she was more interested in the characters of the stories rather than the people who played them. She looked at Henry now and with the day-old stubble growing on his face she could plainly see it was him. Catching herself staring she blushed as she saw Henry's face break out into a smile. He chuckled at her and said "Well at least you have seen one of my projects" It's true that Reba didn't get to watch much tv she read a lot of books and if she wasn't reading she was typing her own books, more so now than ever.
His shoulders seemed to relax more as he rested into the couch, it must have been annoying her not knowing his work. Thinking back to his statement about his tv projects the last one caught her attention; an excitement began bubbling in the pit of her stomach as she asked "Did you just say The Witcher was a project? Not the same Witcher that was written by 'The Andrzej Sapkowski'?" Surprise registered in Henry's eyes at her comment as she continued "He's one of my favourite fantasy fiction writers along with CS Lewis and Tolkien." Henry nodded with approval as he said "Yes, the one and only. If you have Netflix maybe we can watch the first episode while my, ummmm clothes dry, would love to see what you think"
Blushing at the reference to his boxers Reba looked for her remote as she hummed her agreement. While she was looking through her Netflix for the Witcher Henry queried "So Reba what do you do?" finding the series she set it up to start but before she hit play she looked back at Henry replying to his question "I'm a writer" this made Henry sit up, curiosity crossing his face "do you write under your name or a pseudonym?" now feeling self-conscious Reba started to fidget with the control, she looked down and said into her lap "I use a pseudonym I don't like people to know who I am." Looking back to Henry to gauge his reaction she was pleased to see understanding on his face as he responded "I get that, sometimes I wish I could be anonymous too. Can I ask what your pen name Is?"
Unsure, but willing to be open with another fellow creative Reba said ruefully "Thomas Magi" she figured that Henry would laugh at her using a male name, but instead she saw the shock on his face followed but a blush that crept from his neck up to his cheekbones, stuttering "N..No way, you're my favourite author" He said nothing more after that, it was almost like he was stunned into silence. Reba could not believe he had even read her work let alone that she was his favourite author. Seeming to recover Henry asked in a whispered awe "Can I possibly read something your working on? Just a chapter?" laughing to herself she stood and walked to her desk and grabbed her laptop which was open to an opening chapter of the third book of a trilogy. She figured he might need proof that she was who she said she was so this was the best way to prove it.
Handing the laptop to Henry she watched him tentatively as he read, seeing concentration, then amazement, then she lost him. Not a sound was uttered for 20min as he read, then he looked up at her an odd look on his face "you weren't kidding, this is really yours" Reba laughed out loud at the statement. He must have thought she was joking, at her nod Henry's face broke out into a smile "I can't believe Thomas Magi took me home" laughing out loud now he continued to gush "And I got to read the opening to my favourite trilogy this is turning out to be an awesome weekend." Reba could not believe what she was hearing, surely her favourite character was not just saying that she was his favourite author.
"You really like my books?" Reba asked as if to get confirmation of what he had already said sitting up now leaning forward his face animated Henry confirmed "Yes Reba, these are my favourite books. I have been following your work for years. I have every one of your collection at home." Testing the waters she asked, "so what do you think of the chapter, taking into consideration it has not had an edit yet?" Henry stood up then and Reba blushed as she saw that the towel had slipped below his hips showing off the tops of his beautifully round glutes. He paced around the room for a moment before turning back. A serious face as he gave a serious answer "You have created a beautiful fantasy world, and each character is so well developed that the moment I started to read I knew them. It was like coming home to a familiar environment and even though it was unedited I got lost in their world within the first few paragraphs. Truly Reba, when I need to de-stress it's your books I escape into."
Wanting to take to focus off herself Reba turned back to the tv "well why don't we see what you and your fellow colleagues have done to my favourite book series." Henry must have caught on that she was uncomfortable and returned to the couch, as the opening scene played on the tv she moved to get more comfortable until Henry's gravelly voice interrupted "why don't you come here it will be more comfortable and warmer" there was a smile behind the question as she looked to him his arm open and inviting wondering if she was sane or not but remembering his warmth from last night Reba repeated to her self what could it hurt, nodded and moved over to sit into the crook of his arm. He was right, it was comfortable and warmer plus his scent was heavenly. As she settled into watching the episode his arm settled over her shoulder and she heard though his chest a deep sigh as they began watching The Witcher.
"The Girl in the woods is your Destiny" The final scene played out as the credits began to roll Reba paused it knowing that it would just roll into the next episode and really she wanted to continue but Henry had only said one. Knowing what she was like rereading her work she wondered if Henry felt the same. Not wanting to leave her now warm cocoon she heard rather than saw his question as he asked "so...... what did you think?" She shut her eyes for a moment and hummed to show she was thinking then sat up so she could face him. "Well, I can say I liked what you did with Geralt. I would have liked a bit more dialogue but for the moment I think its building his character well." This bought a smile to his face which she had to admit she was really liking. Knowing the next comment might remove the smile she hesitated.
"But..... don't try to hide it, Reba, I can see them, the but's written all over your face" she chuckled was she so easy to read. "But the story writer has butchered all the short stories. It's like she's taken some lines from one story and spliced them into another, and not just once she's done it over and over again." Quietly laughing to himself he pulled her back into his side and reached for the remote "Yes but she had to put two books into the first series otherwise it would not flow" allowing herself to be comfortable in his arms she replied "and what's with all the jumping backwards and forwards. If you missed the conversational cues as to the timeline you would be lost" she felt his laughter rumble through his chest "they had to do that so the three main characters could link up by season two. Lauren has really developed Yennefer and Cirilla's backstories. Why don't we watch the rest I know you'll love it." Snuggling deeper into his side she agreed as the next episode started playing.

This leads to unexpected and wonderful tearful reunions between soulmates discovering each other in waking life, but if your waking selves don’t get along or have emotional constipation (cough, Geralt, cough cough) you and your soulmate can only watch helplessly from your dream meetings as your waking selves make things terrible for both of you without even realizing it.
(Created my own homebrew soulmate!au rules to get myself some solid logical worldbuilding where the characters still have to choose each other in the end, no matter what what destiny says.)

It has been four months. Four months since he brought her to Kaer Morhen. A laundress instantly takes a shine to the little girl, takes her in, feeds her. He visits as often as he can. At least once a day.
She grows so fast. At first little Isobel could fit perfectly in the crook of his arm. Now she is kicking and giggling and waving every time he comes to see her.
When she starts teething, he holds her despite the cries hurting his ears, lets her chew on his fingers, his hands killed hundreds of monsters, some of them humans, some of them not monsters at all.
At nine months old she calls him da-da. He disappears into the mountain and doesn't come down for a week.
One of the Vipers, Letho corners him as soon as he returns.
"You can't disappear like that." He says, "She missed you, and you missed her."
His legs feel like lead, can hardly lift them on his way to the laundress’s room. He missed her ever since he stepped out of the gates, what if she forgot him. What if she doesn't want to see him. Little Isobel, Isa, shrieks and throws herself forward where she's sitting on a heavy quilt.
"Dada, dada, dada." She babbles.
"I'm sorry Isa," he replies, cradling her in his arms, it hits him how much bigger she has gotten since he first took her from her mother's lifeless arms.
"I promise you, for as long as we both shall live, I will never leave you without an explanation." He murmurs into her soft, blond hair.
When Isobel is about one year old, she takes her first steps towards him. Later that night he stands at the battlements and cries quiet tears. Talking to a woman he only knew for a handful of seconds.
When he goes to bed that night, he may or may not be smiling.
At two years old she starts using him as a climbing structure, knowing he will catch her when she falls. She enjoys helping him in the stables and her foster mother in the laundry. She also starts to become stubborn and loud and using bad words Lambert must have taught her. She hits him in for the first time when he won't let her feed the wild, young colt that still needs to be ridden in. He and Aiden share a bottle of the good ale that evening, spiked with white gull.
"She doesn't know that the colt would hurt her," Aiden says, looking far wiser than he actually is, "You were keeping her safe. Also, kids that age, she will probably have forgotten about it tomorrow."
"The fuck do you know about kids?"
Come morning, she has indeed forgotten about it altogether.
At five years old she is finally old enough to understand when he tells her that he is going away for some weeks. Still, she cries and demands to sleep in his bed the night before he leaves.
"I love you, dada," she says when he lifts her up and carries her back to her room.
"Love you too, kitten." He whispers into her hair; it has gotten darker over the years. Sometimes he wonders if it is a sign. When he returns a month later, he can see her on the battlements over the gate, smell her honey and lavender scent in the air. He walks a little faster, Ivy, his horse, the horse that had carried them both to safety, huffs behind him.
When the gate opens, he hardly has time to drop the reigns when she is already sprinting at him.
About seven years after Gerden first held Isobel. A bard rides through the gates. The lad looks and smells terrified. His steed is laden with very little baggage. He takes the horse from Lambert and Isobel rubs it down.
Gerden leaves again two months after that, the journey takes longer than anticipated. He returns home three years later, footsore and without a horse, it had been killed by ghouls in Rinde.
Isobel runs towards him like she does every time he leaves the Kaer. She is taller, grown at least a foot compared to when he last saw her. Isobel hugs him around the chest, gripping tight and not letting go. Dropping his pack in the dirt, Gerden wraps his arms around his daughter, breathing in honey and lavender and hay and saddle oil.
"I missed you papa."
"Missed you too, kitten."

Yennefer catches glimpses, from Jaskier’s mind, of a ballroom lit splendidly with torches and chandeliers. He’s dancing on someone’s feet, only tall enough to see their knees as they spin him around. It’s a warm feeling, like what Yennefer imagines being hugged by your mother is like. She pulls out, back into the ankle-deep water and bitter wind.
“So,” she says faintly, “That’s what happened to Prince Julian.”
Jaskier laughed, his cheeks still tear stained, “Oh haven’t you heard! He was murdered by his sister when he was 6! "
