Another Starlo rant + there's some stuff to clarify
this is my reply to the latest post from @a-legacy-not-to-be-forgotten bc i feel like he mainly had me in mind when he wrote it, which I don't mind, really. After all, we're both apologists of different characters and i DO respect your opinion. Just wanted to throw my two cents in and clarify some stuff (please read till the end)
Exhibit A (having Moray walk around with a snake in their boot and giving them rashes): I always thought this was some kind of job policy, all bc Star's so ambitious and expected his (future) employees to be the same. He wanted everyone to prove they were "real" cowboys. That's also why everyone had lassons for 8 weeks and he had that kangaroo locked in a cell for sneaking a phone in (although it IS hypocritical that Star himself is allowed to own a TV).
Star expects a lot from everyone because he himself gives it his all to make this town as realistic as possible and makes everybody behave like real cowboys (and imo he thought Moray was fine with having a snake in their boot for a week since they probably didn't complain. Star most likely didn't even know the snake gave them rashes/apologized if Moray had told him this). Honestly he's too obsessed and passionate and can be too much without realizing it, that I can't deny
Exhibit B (The Boulder Droppers): No matter how severe (It IS severe), I still see this as super careless (and super forgetful of Starlo), rather than reckless. Again, another instance where he screws up but there's no ill intent. Also he apologized for this to Gilbert
Exhibit C (blaming Clover for everything that happened and shooting them over it): TRUE 100%
...now, Ceroba was doing her best to understand Starlo and he needed her to get back on the right track, but I still think she views him more as a manchild than someone worthy of respect. I don't hate Ceroba or see her as a heartless bitch and a terrible friend (there's that post of mine where I explained everyone's flaws, and it turns out Starlo is the most flawed of them all, which I admitted). I just think her and Star aren't on the same wavelength.
She WAS on the same wavelength as Chujin and that's why I ship them. Ceroba deeply admired him (still does) and honesty she has the right to love whoever she wants. Still, I can't get out of my head how she thought that her wanting to date Starlo in the past must have had to do with the fact "her brain was still developing," or how she lied to him about the sheriff stuff just to spare his feelings. I get the intentions but she should have told him how she really felt (based on her many annoyed faces I got the message Roba never liked any of this + she says she doesn't understand it). I genuinely saw it as her babysitting/pitying him for his childish fantasies instead of actually enjoying participating in the antics (she does like observing the five tho)
And yeah, everyone (Ed, Ace, Mooch, Moray, Ceroba) knew Starlo ADORED westerns, obviously, but what they DIDN'T know or try to figure out is the deeper meaning as to WHY. I feel like everybody thought it was simply a childish fantasy and didn't stem from any deeper insecurities (the FF, just like Starlo, aren't very good with communicating their feelings; why else would they criticise Starlo right in the middle of town where everyone could hear them instead of going someplace private to have the talk)
HOWEVER!
List of Starlo's character flaws I believe he has: insecure, overly enthusiastic, careless (not reckless bc he doesn't intent to cause chaos), cocky, too obsessed with his status & social image, arrogant, mischievous (particularly with Blackjack), childish, needs too much external validation, uses escapism too much, people pleaser, wants to be everyone's "hero," ignorant, naive, too optimistic, overbearing, too ambitious, stubborn, emotional & sensitive to criticism, too obsessed to the point he ignores everyone and everything else, actually IS selfish (I wanna take this opportunity to correct myself. Starlo should have listened to his posse and not have snapped like that & dismissed what they had to say, but they should have also let him know how they felt way earlier and tried to understand Star's pov & deeper insecurities he has & should have not publicly lectured him since they SHOULD know how much he wants to protect the reputation he worked hard to earn. Everyone should have reacted differently)
We don't know what Starlo was like before Clover but based on the way none of his posse ever talked smack about him, gave him dirty looks, or overall acted like they didn't wanna be part of the team, I assumed they either didn't mind his enthusiasm before he got obsessed with Clover, or kept their frustrations with his passion hidden well and didn't choose to communicate at all with him about how they really feel.
As for Star himself, I just don't see him as having been a bad boss. Ed even said how he would always ask him nicely to do stuff, and Dina explains how the only arguments the five of them had were about trivial matters, and how things were pretty predictable before Clover. So I don't think he had made any huge fuck ups. The five were always together in all their shenanigans (Dina says they're like siblings) and Ceroba mentions how she hasn't seen Star "this ecstatic in some time". Which is why I think he didn't step outta line or mistreat others before his dream of meeting a human came true.
HOWEVER #2!
I just remembered a single line of dialogue from Ed, which suggests that Star might have been more bossy than I thought and didn't actually ever ask his posse about their opinions. If this is the case, and probably is because Ceroba says he had changed a lot, scratch that stuff I said before about him not being a bad boss
He acts selfish because he's insecure, but I still shouldn't have used that as an excuse. It's interesting how he's got both selfishness and selflessness inside him at the same time, but yeah, bc of his undeniable charm I overlooked the selfishness part. guilty as charged
time to add that and his bossiness as another one of star's many flaws
Another thing: while all of Ceroba's flaws seem to come from the tragedy that had struck her (besides being stubborn), every single one of Starlo's flaws stem from him and how he feels about himself. He had a normal family, a best friend, and his own friend group, with whom he could discuss his nerdy interests. I think THIS is what makes him so loveable. He techincally doesn't have a real REASON to feel unhappy, but he did, before he became 'North Star' But that persona was exactly WHAT he needed to let go of to be himself and be truly happy
I once jokingly mentioned how Starlo's name could mean "Star + loser" and the more I think about it, the more it makes sense for his arc. He wants to be 'North Star' (all cool and badass and important), but in reality, the real him is just a nice guy who loves his friends. And even if that doesn't make him popular and a loser farmer instead, at least that is the real him who he shouldn't have been running away from
I do love when my fave character ain't perfect and has inner conflicts to work on
To conclude this rant, I want to apologize to the Four and Ceroba for not taking into consideration their pov more and being way too obsessed with this charming nerd

god people really will say the most fucked up stuff to people who are not palatable in their mental illness!
#i’m feeling really really bad tonight!#like lightheaded from sobbing unwell! happy almost father’s day everyone#they weren’t kidding when they said trauma therapy can make you feel worse before you feel better#have been replaying a conversation in my head where someone i loved tore my guts to pieces and i apologized for being a problem at the end#i keep going back to those text messages and seeing ruthless she was and how i said i was sorry for being this way and she accepted the apol#apology#was talking about my decade long series of complex trauma bc a trauma anniversary was coming up and i was struggling#and she told me how i put the trauma before her and she was more important and i shouldn’t care that much about it#i told her she was perfect and right and i was sorry i wasn’t being better and more grateful#i was telling her how scared i was for my dad to inevitably die from alcoholism and am how i’ll carry that grief always#and that was so selfish of me bc why does he even matter when she was there. he was dying and i was wrong to be upset about it.#she also said some things after that that genuinely make me too nauseous to type out. and i agreed because i had to make it up to her#and now we don’t speak and i just have to keep living with that. i just have to keep holding that sickening shit she said in my head#it was the way she talked about me when she was mad that she wasn’t enough to fix all my problems#mad that i still had trauma even though she existed#and the way she talked about my dad and generally substance abuse disorders#and i apologized to her for it. i want to throw up#vent post#j.

a/n: mm hii!! first fic here! I hope you enjoy it I kind of wrote it in twenty minutes and I’m just publishing it without beta reading bc (we die like men) I’m just too in love with neuv and I want to share it with the world lolol
Neuvillette couldn’t bring himself to even think about making a move.
He kept many secrets, and every time he faced your bright smile he would remember it was not his place to disturb your peace. After all, how could a young woman like you endure the dangerous claws of a dragon?
You had stopped by his house to discuss the latest trial and his emotions got the best of him, causing a rain to start pouring.
A storm was approaching; lighting was seen through the window and low thunders could be heard. Neuvillette plagued himself under his breath, hoping there would be a day where he could better control his feelings.
“Here,” he said as he handed you the cup of tea. You watched the lighting curiously, “I do not think the storm will pass for a few hours. You should stay. For the night, I mean.”
You took the cup of tea and averted your eyes from the window to Neuvillette’s face. You studied him with caution, as if it was the first time you ever saw the man — even though you worked together for many months.
“Are you okay?” you asked, ignoring completely his offer.
The words got stuck in his throat and, for a few seconds, he really thought he wouldn’t answer. The man sipped on his tea, his mind racing while trying to figure out why you would ask that all of the sudden. “May I ask why are you asking me such a question?”
It was a small gesture, but he saw it all the same; the way you flexed your hand. There was something you wanted to grab?
Something you wanted to hold?
“They say… It rains when the Hydro Dragon weeps. Yeah, that's what they say,” you murmured and once again looked out the window. To the storm. “The Hydro Dragon. That would be you, right?”
Neuvillette almost choked on his tea, every part of his body malfunctioning and leaving him with only one thing for sure: in his entire existence, this was the first time he was left completely and utterly speechless.
Your warm and comforting eyes turned to him, and you grabbed his cup of tea to put it alongside yours on the coffee table. “Neuvillette,” you spoke his name as if it was a piece of poetry you were yet to learn — eager to do so, “Talk to me.”
And then— your hands, so small and fragile if compared to his, touched him. Your fingers traced his, and you embraced his hand between yours. He could feel the warmth of your skin contrasting against his cold one, pulling him closer, closer, closer.
“When did you figure it out?” was the first thing he said, scared it may be recent. If so, there still is time for you to run, for you to escape. To turn your back and never see him again. It’s probably the best for you, he knows, but this little selfish part in him can’t stand the thought of seeing you gone.
“A month ago or so, it doesn't matter,” you’re quick to cut the subject. “I didn't mention it because I knew you didn't want me to. I’m just worried, that's all.”
Worried.
She is worried.
The realization clicks in Neuvillette’s mind, for the first time in so long acknowledging that maybe, just maybe, he was too, deserving of someone’s concern and care.
“You are saying it does not matter,” he repeats as if to confirm what he just heard.
I pushed you because I cared about you. I pushed you because you made me feel good and comfortable. I pushed you because I thought my true self would frighten you.
Yet, you’re here. And you’re telling me it doesn’t matter.
“It doesn’t. Never did,” you frown. “I just wanna know, no— I need to know why it is raining, Neuvillette. Why would you weep? I’m here with you, talk to me.”
Without giving it a second thought, Neuvillette’s right hand finds your lower back and in a split second you're pressed against his chest, the tightest hug you have ever been given. He’s much taller than you, and you can feel perfectly as he inhales your scent and hugs you tightly.
“Neuv—”
“I thought I had to restrain myself from you. I thought I was no good,” he finally speaks his mind, distancing himself enough for you to see his face; the weeping Dragon. Oh, the melancholy in his eyes.
The eyes of someone who almost lost something precious.
“Neuvillette,” you whispered. “There’s nothing better for me than you.”
And it was true; so you pulled on his hair just enough to have him connecting your lips, a sigh of relief escaping him as if there was nothing in this world he had anticipated more.

Slow day at the Bau means, that everyone is trying not to fall asleep at their desks.
Hotch is in his office, hard-working as always. Spencer dissappeared somewhere. Rossi is pretending to be working, but he is in fact badly hiding a book in his lap. Emily and Derek aren't even trying to pretend to work, they find you more interesting than their reports.
You are munching on your cookies, while you frown at your paperwork.
Well, they aren't particularly staring at you as they are at the cookies on your table.
They are contemplating wether they should go ask for one or if they want to live.
Everyone knows, that you aren't the most optimistic person on your good days and you are even grumpier on the worse days.
Today is the latter. Your day didn't start well and it just kept getting worse. Yeah, so you are now just frowning at your papers, willing them to go away in your mind.
"I'm going to ask her for one," Derek says bravely, Emily eyes widen and she laughs, "good one, Derek."
"What? I'm being serious..."
"Right, well I want to see that," she dares him, she literally saw you curse the hell out of the coffee maker, so she bet, that it won't go well," grap one for me too, then."
"Watch me," Derek gets up, but before he even takes one step, Spencer appears next to them
"Why are you guys staring at y/n?" Spencer asks, looking confused at them.
"Better question is where were you?" Derek eyes the coffee in his hands.
"Ah you know, around" he says quickly, sipping on the brown liquid, that is clearly not from the office.
"But why are you staring at her?" he raises his eyebrows at them.
"She isn't in a very good mood today and her cookies look tasty" Emily answers.
"Oh, really?" Spencer asks, eyes softening immediately at the mention of you, as always.
Emily and Derek exchange a knowing look. It's clear to them and everybody else, that Spencer likes you and that you like Spencer, too. Well almost everybody, you two are as oblivious as one can be.
"What's up with that look?" Spencer frowns at them, when he sees their weird faces.
"Oh come on, like you don't know" Emily scoffs, Spencer just frowns more, not knowing what she is talking about, " you couldn't be more obvious about y/n," she chuckles and Derek laughs, too.
"Yeah, pretty boy. And it's obvious, she likes you, too. " You always become such a uncharacteristic rambling mess, that even a blind person could see, that you like Spencer.
"She doesn't," Spencer quickly shuts Derek down. There is just no way, that you like him back, no way.
"She really does. She likes you so much, that I bet she'd give you one of her cookies right now. " You don't like to share, it's not that you are selfish, not at all, but you never ever share your food with anybody, no matter what.
"Not funny, guys" Spencers says, he's been teased about hs love life enough by Derek, but including you in the teasing just stings.
"But it's true! She's always all shy and blushy around you" Derek defends," if you don't believe us, you should see for yourself. Go ask her for the cookie."
"What?"
"Just go ask her and you'll see we are telling you the truth," Emily adds, Spencer looks uncertainly at her. He doesn't want to make a fool out of himself, especiallynot in front of you.
But before he can object, Emily pushes him in your direction. So he goes.
You don't notice him approaching at first, but when you do, your cheeks, that are full of cookies heat up.
"Hi" he greets you, you clumsily wave at him and the cookie you have in your hand falls on the floor.
"H-hi Spencer" you shyly greet him, cheeks even redder as you pick the cookie up from the ground.
"How are you doing? Are you bored, too?" Spencer chuckles.
"So bored, the paperwork is so boring," you sigh,your eyes are basically burning holes into the paper. Spencer chuckles at your exasperation and you go all blushy again.
Spencer only now notices, how much your cheeks go red and how shyly you smile around him.
He thought, you are like that with everyone, but now he realises you aren't. He's never seen you blush at anything, that the other team members had said, ever. He thinks about that one time, when Emily complimented you on your new hair and you just said 'I know' and walked away.
"I'm bored, too. Also a little hungry" Spencer's stomach growls to support the statement.
"D-do you want some cookies?" you immediately offer him some with a soft smile. Spencer thinks he might die.
Emily and Derek were right. Or maybe he is just thinking too much into this little gesture. Or maybe you do in fact like him.
"You are offering me your cookies?" he asks, bewildered.
"Umm yes? Shouldn't i be?" you puzzle.
"It's just that you never share your food" Spencer explains and your eyes go wide, the blush at this point isn't leaving your cheeks .
"No that it's bad or anything. I totally understand, I don't really like sharing food either" he adds, so you know, he isn't judging you.
"Well yeah, but I w-want to share with you now, so do you want some?" you sheepishly ask again, averting your eyes from him.
"No." Your eyes widen after his answer.
"O-oh , okay, " you look almost heart broken, after he says it. So Spencer quickly adds.
"No, because I think we should get some proper meal," he smiles at you.
"We?"
"Yeah, we. Do you want to grab something? I know this great place not far from here."
"Really?" You question, hopeful small smile on your face.
"Yes, really."
"Okay, I'd like that."
As Spencer patiently waits for you to get your thing, he looks over his shoulder and sees Emily and Derek with the biggest grins on their faces.
"Assholes" he says under his breath.
"What?" You think, he said something.
"Oh nothing. Ready to go?" You nod almost giddily and start to walk to the door. Spencer has a big grin on his face, too as he walks next to you. Maybe, he will thank Derek and Emily for being too hungry for your cookies later.

what if dottore had to create a new segment for a very specific experimental project (dunno what it is but for the sake of this ask just hear me out xddd) and its the female version of prime ! fragile reader has always been nosey as to what dottore's new project is ab and would even snoop around eventhough prime or the segments would eventually rant ab it sooner or later . so when reader found out that theres been a newcomer at the lab their curiousity peaked yet the lab is very restricted whenever its being operated and can only hear their voice which is somewhat familiar w their figure of speech so reader is left quite frustrated . ladyttore has all the memories of prime so whenever reader's presence can be sensed outside of the lab she just smiles to herself and felt giddy at reader's antics for being curious yet clueless ab her . after the project has been completed she just ... kind of almost nothing to do since prime and all of the segments had already been assigned onto a new project w all the roles taken and shes left to standby if there happens to be any emergency . she met reader for the first time when she strolls along the halls to study the area then suddenly reader appeared in different direction as they were ab to go to their room . reader immediately froze as their mind went , " WHO IS THIS PRETTY LADY AND WHY DOES SHE LOOK LIKE DOTTORE ?!?!?!? " . ladyttore just simply chuckles at this then holds one of their hand on hers to bring it to her lips and said , " its a pleasure to finally meet you " and u just burst into million shades . i have a feeling ladyttore is more suave than most segments so when prime and the other segments were left busy both of u went along quite well and when they got back they lowkey feels jealous LOL . zandi is prob quite fond of ladyttore since shes very attentive and he likes adults that are somewhat similar to reader .

YESSS WBDWQKDWQD FEMTTORE WOULD BE... SO SUAVE AND CHARMING AND TALL AND PRETTY,, Dottore, as someone who is constantly seeking new perspectives, well it wouldn't be too surprising for him to make a female segment!! (We know he's done much crazier things anyway.) Although you've been told many many times to stop wandering around certain off-limits areas of the lab... you can't help it. You're still a scholar, after all! (Interpret "scholar" that how one would like.) Though many times, you end up being caught before you can get any of the juicy details... which happens yet again, and all you can hear is a familiar yet unfamiliar voice at the same time...
Although Femttore thinks you are the cutest little thing that she would love to gobble up, she doesn't force the meeting, rather, she wants it to happen naturally. Oh, of course she'd love to wrap her hands around your shoulders and purr into your ear, have you lay on her lap as you glance nervously at her but, she's not impatient. Yes, seeing all the other segments hog your attention is rather annoying but her chance will come. And it is worth every second of waiting.
You have to do a double take when you see such a lovely, well-dressed lady with... a familiar mask and... long, blue hair?? You nearly trip over your feet as you try to understand when she just strolls up and kisses your hand so romantically,, And her voice? OH DEAR..... yk i'm trying really hard to not sound deranged and delusional but i feel like there are so many skewed interpretations of damen even though the books are literally from his pov. here are some of them:
a. "damen is an unreliable narrator" i've literally gone to battle with people over this take cause NO HE'S FUCKING NOT?? you say 'damen didn't see laurent's good qualities and was overly judgemental of veretians' i say damen not fucking with his captors who's been nothing but awful to him doesn't mean he was unreliable!! it wasn't like laurent was a golden angel and damen willingly hated on him for nothing. book 1 laurent treated him horribly and damen had every reason and right to not trust him or find him honorable.
b. "damen was a fuckboy who discarded the people he slept with the second he was done with them before laurent" breaking news: if someone sleeps with a lot of people that means he has no respect for them and is bound to treat them like shit! the lack of canon evindence doesn't matter!
(if the take is about damen not being in love with his partners before laurent then i'm on board!! it's the implication that damen was an inconsiderate sex partner that boggles my mind cause... did we read the same books?)
c. "damen is actually bad at sex" is a take/joke(?) i've seen MULTIPLE times and it never fails to make me think what a fucking stupid thing it is to say ❤️
d. "damen learned empathy from laurent" ????? lmao. anyways...
e. "damen was lazy and kastor picked up his slack" is everything ok with your eyes? when's the last time you've seen an ophthalmologist?
f. "theomedes neglected damen" damen literally spends page after page reminiscing about his father's words, advices and their last days together. he also says theo was the only parent he knew all his life and since someone needed to raise him to be this fascinating gentle giant... 1+1=3???
g. any interpretation where damen is some sort of neanderthal who is a selfish spoiled and clueless oaf who needs to be educated by girlypopboss laurent OR where he lets laurent walk all over him and has no agenda of his own. just... no.
16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing
any setting where laurent is downright cold and rude towards damen FOR NO APPARENT REASON and yet damen is still obsessed with him, again for some mysterious reason??? not to sound like some know-it-all condescending bitch (tho i suspect to some degree i'm already infamous and some ppl dislike me bc of it 🥺 oh well...) but i think most people forget damen only started giving laurent the time of his day once laurent started showing him basic deceny during pg. i really don't think he'd be interested in someone who rebuked him at every chance and showed no interest at him.

To me Rhaenyra would’ve been such an enjoyable character if she wasn’t perpetually framed as the hero (which is the intent, so that’d be a different show), If she could’ve been as sheltered, entitled, and even cruel as she actually is without always being presented as the flawless chosen one… she’d been great to watch ngl. She happens to be portrayed by two strong performers, and Emma in particular plays the “entitled” and “manipulative”part very well.
I’m definitely Team Green, as in, i do think Aegon is the heir over Rhaenyra from the moment he’s born, but my issues with Rhaenyra aren’t about her thinking the throne is hers, or fighting for it. She’s the firstborn and it was promised to her. I get that and do sympathise with her because of that.
The obvious comparison is Shiv Roy (the circumstances are very different, i’m talking framing/writing) who many might say is the best Roy (and this could’ve been said about Rhaenyra even without the hero framing) because she is the most left-leaning, and she also says pretty things like “when I’m queen I’ll create a new order”. It’s when it comes to actions, neither can truly back it up, because the quest for power is what matters the most, and Shiv wasn’t patted on the head during hers. It was also acknowledged a few times that she does believe in the things her brothers don’t care for. Why was it impossible for Rhaenyra to be written like this? Cause she’s supposed to be Daenerys 2.0 and that’s a shame
rhaenyra would have benefited tremendously from shiv's writing. for example, shiv's storyline during "america decides" is so well-executed & elaborate - hotd could never. she wants the democrat candidate to win bc she does believe in more left-leaning ideals, but, at the same time, her selfishness and self-preservation and desire for power come into play as she wants to lead her father's company via the arrangement she has with matsson. so she finds herself in a situation where she wants to eat her cake and have it too - have jimenez win but NOT if he agrees to block the deal to sell off waystar.
in the end, her desire for power wins over and she refuses to even try to (indirectly) convince jimenez' team to accept to block the deal like her brothers want - she never makes the phone call. if waystar gets sold off, she can't "win" and she wants to win no matter what. and she gets called out for this. explicitly and dramatically. kendall catches her red-handed and her hypocrisy is exposed for all to see. shiv doesn't care enough for her principles to make a personal sacrifice, even if it's for the good of the entire country. it's sympathetic because she is trying as a woman to react to being excluded from the high echelons of power, but, at the same time, it's utterly meaningless, because she is/will be rich af no matter what, so being CEO is just child's play. just that other people will get hurt if the fascist mencken becomes president, but who cares about that, right? shiv is a privileged woman who will be ok no matter what, the suffering will always be reserved for other people.
poignant parallel to the targaryens fighting over the throne and never choosing the welfare of the people over their own consolidation of power. rhaenyra could have been a rich woman living her comfortable housewife life, but she feels so entitled to a position she doesn't even care to fulfill properly that she plunges the entire continent in a pointless civil war. she doesn't have a political bone in her body, is diplomatically inept and her administration skills are lacking, but viserys promised she'd be queen, so that's that. just like shiv doesn't have any true qualifications or experience to be CEO, but she pursues that goal to the detriment of her personal relationships and morality.
as you said, shiv is not patted on the back for holding the "right" political beliefs, she is not given chosen-one white-hart framing, she is presented with all her complexity and flaws and contradictions. like rhaenyra, she is not shown to do an altruistic gesture if it doesn't benefit her in some way, so the narrative doesn't treat her like the second coming of christ. rhaenyra could have similarly been a groundbreaking female character - not necessarily likable, but sympathetic and complex and ultimately interesting.

Your points about Salem and Cinder possibly being a fucked up mother/daughter relationship also puts her constant parallels with Ironwood and Winter in V8 into a very different light as well.
Ironwood and Salem, in their own dark and twisted way as a result of their culture/their circumstances loving the one person they consider to be their daughter, but differing ultimately in regards to what they chose to do about it.
Ironwood deciding that his own selfish desires and ideology mattered more than even the one woman he cared for more than most, while Salem basically dropping and twisting her ideals into a pretzel to help the one person she considers the closest thing to a replacement daughter for her dead daughters with Ozma.
Winter, thinking the world of Ironwood only to ultimately have to oppose him due to his betrayal of her and everyone else, vs Cinder thinking Salem is just Madame 2.0 due to Salem constantly stamping all over her trauma buttons by poor decisions and abusive actions born of her own trauma even as Salem, in her own fucked up way, is willing to do anything for Cinder if she truly asks for it.
It also frankly explains rather well why Cinder is so important in Salem's plan in a way that I haven't been able to pin down without that as a consideration. Cinder thinks it's because she's got some fancy storybook destiny that she needs to prove that she "deserves", and the audience being led on a red herring to think that it's only going to lead to her being discarded once Salem has no more use for her. When in reality it's because (again in her own fucked up way) Salem wants her surrogate daughter to get what she wants in her life (mixed with fighting a rebellion against the gods) because Salem knows exactly how Cinder feels about having her trust broken beyond repair and demonized by others.
And all of this occurring in the story arc where an overarching theme is of multiple parents (Dr. Polendina and Penny, Tai and Summer and Ruby Rose/Yang, etc.) being deeply flawed people who are willing to do anything and everything for the sake of their daughters.
Cinder.exe will just end up suffering a mental bluescreen when Salem ends up showing this in the most undeniable way possible, because it's so opposite to everything she understands about the world.

give 8.4-5 (<- fault + amity) a watch with this reading in mind sometime. bc cinder’s relationship with salem and penny’s with pietro are directly compared, in a really interesting way:
PENNY: Why are you doing this? Why serve someone like Salem?
CINDER: I don’t serve anyone—and neither would you, if you weren’t built that way!
PENNY: …That is not… [She glances down, making eye contact with Pietro.] I choose to fight, for people who care about me.
<- amity is a really fraught place for penny to be confronted with this, both because it’s where cinder orchestrated her being ripped to shreds a year ago and because in order to get the comms satellite launched, penny had to let her dad remote into her system and literally use her body like a puppet and it is painfully obvious that she did not feel comfortable with that.
so… for cinder to come here and draw an implicit equivalence between salem and pietro and insinuate that penny is not free, that truly does get under penny’s skin. which i think is something that often gets overlooked, because it’s layered under the more obvious fact that cinder really doesn’t understand who or what penny is at all; but like, penny hesitates. it takes her a moment to figure out how to articulate that’s not true because there is a kernel of truth to cinder’s point.
penny was built to be ironwood’s weapon. his perfect super-soldier. and now she that she’s defied him to do what she thinks is right, half the people she cares about have told her that she’s being evil and selfish and it’s her fault if everyone dies. and the other half told her she needs to go to amity and stay there and not help anybody, and she feels like a tool, she feels like she has a million things she’s supposed to do and none of them are what she wants to do. so she has all these mixed-up feelings about… what she was built for and what she chooses to be.
and like. in 8.4:
CINDER: I… I want to search for the winter maiden. I think that—
SALEM: Did you hear that, my pet? She thinks; she wants. As if she’s done something to warrant me caring about either of those things.
CINDER: We’re just sitting and waiting. Without the maiden, the vault means nothing. Let me claim it for you.
SALEM: I will tell you when and where you are needed.
CINDER: But your grace—
[The Hound lunges around to snarl at her.]
SALEM: I would like to think I have shown a great deal of patience over my many years walking Remnant, but I do hate repeating myself. You will remain here. Is that clear?
CINDER: [lying] …Yes. Yes, of course. Without you. I am nothing.
vs 8.5:
PENNY: I can fix this. […] Our message is only a few minutes long. I can try to hold Amity in place for—
PIETRO: Absolutely not! You’re in no condition to do something like this. Even just the temperature out there could…
PENNY: It is our only option.
MARIA: She’s right, Pietro. We have to remember the big picture—
PIETRO: I don’t care about the big picture! I care about my daughter! I lost you before; are you asking me to go through that again? No. No, I want the chance to watch you live your life.
PENNY: But, dad, I am trying to.
PIETRO: …Right.
<- literally. literally the exact same argument. not just in terms of what the conflict is but the structure of the dialogue is identical. the interrupted statement of intention; the practical reasoning shot down; “but, your grace” vs “but, dad”—the difference is that where salem is masking, pietro wears his heart on his sleeve, and that allows him and penny to come to an understanding that she is going to do this and he’s going to sit in his fear and support her. whereas salem gets the false capitulation and false security.
it’s pretty in-your-face (<- which i think supports the interpretation of salem’s motive being protectiveness twisting through her emotional walls) and it’s an interesting parallel to set up given that salem does, in the end, come to a similar resolution to step back and let cinder take risks. it telegraphs the possibility of constructive change, a choice to accept the fear instead of trying to force cinder into a position where the fear doesn’t exist.
it’s also just darkly funny in a way. cinder kills penny twice and is directly the culprit for pietro’s intense terror of losing penny, and salem feels that same terror for cinder. mirrors.
but yeah with ironwood and winter too, “i’ve chased a lot of shadows over the years, always expecting betrayal, but never once did i think it would ever come from you” vs “you chose to disobey my specific instructions, just to fail again. and… i’ve realized it’s all my fault.” and, “consider this my last order: step aside” vs “here i am holding you back, instead of lifting you up.”
salem if nothing else takes cinder’s betrayal as a reason to reevaluate her own actions and consider what she did that gave cinder cause to disobey her, where ironwood is by this point completely disconnected from the reality that loyalty is a two-way street.
and there’s something too in salem choosing not to stop at “it’s my fault” but fully articulate that she understands why cinder did what she did; it’s of a piece with the way she responds to cinder in 8.14, a conscious reversal of “she thinks, she wants, as if she’s done something to warrant me caring”—she does care, and she has always cared, and it shows in how she speaks to cinder when she’s not trying to prove she doesn’t care.
like. salem chose to put her trust in cinder—an enormous degree of trust, over and over again—without having any illusions about what sort of person cinder is. she knows cinder is singularly focused on what cinder wants. she’s unfazed by the disobedience because she knows she prevented cinder from getting what she wanted. whereas ironwood trusted winter because he molded her so well into the perfect lieutenant that he never imagined she could break from him, because he never understood there was more to her than the surface he sculpted.
#salem is either going to save cinder’s life to the detriment of her own agenda#or let cinder go free before the beacon vault is found or opened#and it’s going to absolutely shatter cinder’s concept of herself and the world#long blue screen of death moment#THAT’S not how it works how did SALEM of all people miss the memo

Pudding is such a complex character! I love her so so much! She really means the world to me. Honestly, her whole story is completely relatable and the fact that it's basically used to parallel Sanji's doesn't help. It just makes everything hurt more. I could talk about her for hours and how misinterpreted her character is due to fandom discourse and the recent wave of "puritanism" within the internet.
I'm not gonna get too into fandom discourse because I hate it and I already have horrible experiences about it in this fandom (with Lawlu, specifically), but... I find it stupid. Her character has so many layers. She's just as complex and traumatized as Sanji. That's... That's quite the whole point? She made mistakes and has mixed feelings and different types of personalities due to her past and trauma responses. She made mistakes. Sanji made mistakes too. The only damn reason why people don't forgive her is because "she hurt our little meow meow <//3 She's so evil!!! Evil woman!!!" as if they wouldn't forgive her character right away if she were a MAN. Like. Misogyny who??
Anyway, I think it's pretty obvious people don't like Pudding because of obvious misogyny and overprotection of Sanji. Which is understandable because I'm also very intense when it comes to him, but damn... He would not like it if he knew y'all hate her for her mistakes.
Also, people only talk about her to say "she's a great character but her age gap with Sanj-" why does it always have to be about Sanji? Let the girl be her own character. Have you hear of the Bechdel test? No? Perhaps you could try it? Her character is obviously created for Sanji, but she's so much more! Let her escape!!! From the hands of patriarchy and men!! That being said, the whole discourse about their age gap is... Just... So fucking stupid.
Don't go cancelling me right away. I'm just saying that when it comes to stuff like age Oda doesn't seem to be very... Consistent? He's made mistakes before. And the Charlottes are a very huge family. I'm sure not even Oda knows the order of these children, lmfao. I think he would only say shit like "Katakuri is one of the oldest and Pudding is one of the youngest idk. Just made her one of the youngest to match Sanji's backstory of being one of the youngest". But leaving that aside-- Maturity never equals age in a show that's... About pirates... Where everyone has different experiences with different social surroundings... It's just like the Lawlu discourse, damn. You have to know the characters before saying crazy stuff like "Law would groom Luffy" because HOW??? HOW WOULD HE DO THAT??? That's basically impossible. And you need to think about the characters before assuming things. And Sanji and Pudding? Leaving aside the age difference, Pudding has more power over Sanji and that's noticeable. Does that even matter tho? They understand each other on the same level after all in the end. Tbh I couldn't tell about the age difference. I thought they were the same age ngl. Only found out bc I saw the discourse going on and my first reaction was "This is fucking dumb". Tbh their relationship is one of the healthiest I've ever seen for Sanji. We see him being himself for once without being extremely creepy. The whole arc about him losing himself is about a girl loving him for who he truly is. And the whole arc about a girl being judged for being different is about a boy loving her for who she truly is. It's so beautiful!!!
Anyway. Not the point. The thing is that people hate Pudding for... Absolutely nothing? Not knowing how to read complex characters? I still don't get it. Perhaps it's just that my mommy issues are too harsh and I can see through her but damn.
Ana also the whole thing about erasing Sanji's memories? People hate her for that and calling her... Selfish??? Did you not... Watch the scene... Of her crying because she lost the only person she has ever truly loved. But whatever. Call her selfish.

the conversation between homura and sayaka in this ep makes me feral. also the way we see homura expressing emotion and breaking down after madoka in a way kind of rejects her... literally stabbing me would hurt less.
Sayaka keeps hitting the witch even after it’s dead until the labyrinth disappears
As they leave the labyrinth she has a hollow empty look on her face
She gives the grief seed to kyoko bc she thinks that if she refuses the rewards she is making up for the fact that she isn’t being totally selfless / she wants to punish herself

Sayaka sees herself now as only a weapon for killing witches

And it has to be kyoko in that moment bc kyoko understands she has also been stupid in this way and faced the consequences and even tried to warn sayaka but she was too blind and stubborn to see it

i cant stop thinking abt the official aot highschool au.. usually i am So disinterested in irl and school aus but in this case it is a bit fun because isyama himself came up w it and he made it so stereotypically 2000s american highschool movie themed in a somehow not annoying or bad way

i literally. do not even like those types of movies. but to imagine the very tragic aot cast in such a light hearted setting is fun and interesting
especially because the characters are every so slightly different and ngl i still want isayama to kill himself bc of the ending but he cooked with that AU
Eren in that au is soooo painfully average but has a bit of edge to him. it is Still Small but its There and i so badly want to draw him going through character development and amping up that edge to 999
And. Also. Itll be a ship comic IF i make it but i dont want to bc i don't rlly like drawing ships

So. That made me think of me continuing the story aa a fanfic ( drawn doujin ) where eren !! eren :3 :) pays a bit more attention to her because it made me sad how he fr moved on while she still has her dedicated fake simp circle
IN CANON. she loses her beloved gf and gets depressed and it is eren who cheers her up and says she doesnt have to act bubbly or cute or a good girl that he likes her better as her true self :) this cheers her up and makes her gain confidence and. then. eren discovers he kinda chomped his dad and gets depressed and it is historia who says fuck his dad useless bastard anyways & it is better to be selfish and move on for one's own sake. and says theyre the enemies of Humanities and despite the many crimes their families did it doesn't matter and theyll be different ( THEN EREN BECOMES 1000X WORSE LMAO LETS GOO 80% GENOCIDE 💯💯 ) this cheers eren up and makes him Stop being suicidal and actually move forward ( based historia i wish she went on with the 100% seflish personality before isayama ruined her )

Here's the thing, Enid is a professional. She has taken up being a bodyguard because it means she can protect and Joel? He protects well. He's practically perfect! and Enid can't hate him, no matter how hard she wants too. He's a good guy and it makes the churning of distaste in her stomach all the more suffocating because he's so obviously the better choice.

Enid is selfish, she's needy and she craves for a person that isn't hers in the first place. But as she downs that last drink, she'll close her eyes and remember that in the end, that doesn't matter. What she feels doesn't matter because even if she's jealous, even if she wishes to be by her side-
It doesn't matter, not when Wednesday is happy and that's all Enid has ever wanted.

Halo heloo!! Popping in to say if you have any more Wordgirl hot takes? I'm new to the fandom and I saw your post about the opinion meme. (Btww my favorite character is Lady Redundant Woman and I ship Tobecky-- I wonder if you also have unpopular opinions on those mostly cause im curious)

Kinda funny that I'm asked fandom/character questions considering my activity and obscurity, but I have been in the Wordgirl space for 7 years and observed it back in the early 2010s.
As for hot takes...hmm, I could give some since I was watching through the series again, and I recently had some discussions with a friend about Wordgirl stuff. (The Disclaimer, aside from one of the takes I have, these aren't that serious, or do I want to come across as confrontational, just my thoughts and opinions):
Scoops is not a jerk. Random, I know, but it's also connected to the idea of Scoops being this secretly selfish boy and why he's the least liked kid character in the fandom next to idk Eileen. Yes, Scoops is a bit of dunce and can often say or do stuff because he gets carried away or his ego--but he wouldn't straight up be malicious. He's a kid. And idk, I think it's pretty funny how oblivious or callouse he can be to others. But no Tobecky fans, Scoops wouldn't just straight up hate or stop being Becky's friend if she either confessed to him or started seeing Tobey. (I agree that he's such a dummy at times and could say the wrong things, but come on, look at Scoops and tell me he would treat his friends terribly.)
Granny May is funny. I know a lot of people don't like her or her episodes because they hate the gaslight or turn on Wordgirl schemes, but idc I think it's hilarious that this 75 year old is beefing with a child and gets away with manipulating people for the 100th time. Plus, I think it's interesting that her episodes could bring out a Becky that makes us question if she's doing good deeds bc it's the right thing or doing them because it gives her purpose and adoration. Either way, I'm like the only Wordgirl fan who is interested in Granny May character lore, and what exactly is her relationship to her own kids and grandkids. And that's cause she makes me laugh.
(Oh boy, serious time) Okay, so this is a very recent observation and discussion I had with a friend who is more educated on this matter over the entire fandom perception of Two-brains|squeaky. And I'm gonna say it on mine and on their behalf... I don't like the usage of squeaky as this ultimate evil or an overt metaphor for the difficult/bad side effects of mental illness. Like, okay, I know this is touchy for people since Two-brains is the favorite--but I don't like the constant fandom aesthetic sticking to making Two-brains the ONLY character with either DID or any number of serious mental conditions just because he fused with the brain of a evil mouse, especially when their depiction of it is worse than Detroit Become Human with racism. At worst, it could be ablelist and ignorant to people with those actual diagnoses. What do I mean by this? Well, it's mostly for people who think that Steven is still inside Two-brains or that Two-brains could be fixed. I'm one of the Steven is gone believers, but regardless--it's kinda ehh to try and make Two-brains represent someone with mental illness or addiction and just say "dw he can be cured if we kill this other part of himself". Even worse than when he does get "fixed," it's only squeaky's influence that encourages his bad behavior and that others would care for him more if only he got rid of the "problem" and went back to being "normal". Like...that's not how a mental illness/condition works. I should know. And this idea kinda makes me uncomfortable because idk, it's like the equivalent of when TOH was still airing and some ppl going: "Why doesn't eda just isolate or destroy the owl beast?" Or the audacity to say that she should have been fully healed at the end when no, she was a good example of the metaphor, and it would completely ruin the purpose. (Plus, I don't get the Jekyll and Hyde comparisons if you try to apply the mental illness metaphor).
As for the other parts of your question. Hmm do i have unpopular ideas/takes of Lrw or Tobecky?
For LRW, um, not really? She's one of my favorite villains, so I'm good, not really any complaints with her or how she's done in fandom tropes. All I know is that fandom actually makes her cooler somehow, and I get mad about that bc shes so awesome/lhj
For Tobecky...yeah I know, another discussion about them, lol, can't help it. But for unpopular ideas/takes...I guess one is that I don't think Wordgirl was completely terrible during the Miss Power scene with him. Like obviously it hurted Tobey's feelings and Wordgirl shouldn't be so mean, BUT you can't lie to say that if not then...Wordgirl would have blown up at him one day and it's good that Tobey at least knows what she deep down thought of him. I know a lot of people who like Tobey don't think he should be treated badly ever, but no, the kid kinda needs the humbling (the stuff of his appearance was uncalled for though. Like who cares about his drip Wordgirl--he destroys buildings and belittles others 😭 thats the least of his issues.)
Another one is that I don't think Wordgirl/Becky owes him anything just because he likes her and is secretly lonely. Like you can have Tobey as your favorite and want him to be happy, but, to me, it's like don't just make Tobey the one who only gets Becky because he like deserves it after getting mega sad or he "won" her (im saying this as a tobey fan). What's Becky thoughts? Or make her the one to realize why she would be with Tobey? How does Tobey make her happy? And that it's okay that Becky rejects Tobey in a fic or art. It doesn't make her the bad one in the scene or that she's treating him unfairly. (Something I realized in my own fic).

Doing this again because there are so many of those : Shikamaru and Hinata. Before someone kills me I do like Hinata, I just hate her fans. Like in what way did she surpass Neji when she can't be arsed to run without falling. Bffr Neji's the strongest Hyuuga. And Shikamaru isn't smart when his entire victory hinges on dumbing down and nerfing both Hidan and Kakuzu.

Everything leading up to it. The way the antagonists (especially Madara) were treated both by the narrative and characters, the way Kaguya came out of nowhere, the way Naruto and Sasuke kept getting unearned power ups. Hell on earth. Then all this culminates into a VOTE2 fight I never wanted to see with a Sasuke who's blabbering nonsense, and then suddenly, skyscrapers and ugly ass kids of ships that got little to no development. None of the questions brought up by the story got resolved

Perpetrator. There could've been an argument for him being a victim, but adult Itachi does say he regrets nothing so clearly he's fine with the massacre and would've made the same decision as an adult aka he's nothing but a shameless genocidal murderer. I'm not very interested in waxing poetry about how hard it was for him to kill his own parents when he had like, so many choices to make, and I think such discussions are stupid when Sasuke (and the Uchiha clan) are the biggest victims of both Itachi and Konoha and yet don't get a fraction of the sympathy that Itachi gets
12. who should've died in war arc?
Gai first of all. Why the hell did he survive 8 gates? What was the point? It cheapened his sacrifice, and made it obvious that the stakes, no matter how high, are never that serious. Frankly I didn't even want him to be the one to open the 8 gates, it should've been Lee's moment (and yes, death) but well. At least one of the Gokage (preferably Onoki and/or Gaara) should've also died. And Hinata or Hiashi should've died to protect Neji, it would've been THE perfect symbolic end to the Hyuuga issue. Oh Shikamaru should've also died, he was useless and it would've made more impact. Probs another death in Konoha 12 would be great (like Kiba maybe?) but Lee's and Shikamaru's deaths (with potentially Hinata also dying) would've been great for tension and emotional impact. Oh also neither Obito nor Madara should've died

He was a good sensei bc he made good child soldiers. He was also a good sensei bc he did try his best to keep them safe. I don't know why people argue he's the worst. Gai, Asuma, and Jiraiya are fucked up, and Kurenai got 0 screentime teaching. Kakashi also trained Sakura, and recommended her to Tsunade. The idea that he completly neglected her is fanon

Tobirama is Japanese. The Uchiha are Japanese. No he was not racist, and he didn't do half the shit people claim he did (he didn't disrespect Madara's body or Uchiha's funeral practices, he didn't segregate them, he didn't force them to be in the Police Force, he didn't focus solely on the Uchiha and no other threats, he didn't call them slurs (cant believe i even need to say that), he didnt hunt them specifically, he didn't kill Izuna for shits and giggles, he didnt seek out Kagami to use him as the "black friend", he didnt spread rumors, he didnt spy on them, he didnt blame them for Madara's actions etc etc etc. He was prejudiced, as was Madara (who even went as far as to cut Tsunade in half just bc she's Senju. That's way more violent than Tobirama calling Sasuke an evil brat). I think it's perfectly understable why he was so cautious about them, and I wish he was given half the understanding the Uchiha get for their own backstories and actions, considering he too was a traumatized child soldiers who watched his siblings die and was abused by his father. He's a product of his times, and even he acknowledges that. That's why he has faith in the younger generations, and why he died for them twice.
17. Is Sakura useless?
Not at all. Naruto would've died in the Waves arc without her, and that's just the first arc. People just hate female characters, and belittle healers.
18. ship wars or power scaling debates?
I prefer ship wars bc I'm not rlly a shipper so I don't get annoyed and can make fun of people who get mad at me for my opinions. Power scaling tho....I'm a great power scalers and when ppl just make shit up (like saying Hinata is stronger than Neji or Itachi than Obito) I get pissed.

I'm gonna say this and I know people aren't going to agree and that's okay
But I really don't like Mikasa's character. I think she had the potential to be really cool af, but the execution fell flat. I know she's written a little bit better in the Manga (still need to finish it) but here's why I don't like her and how I think it could have been changed.
I understand why she's so attached to Eren, but it's almost obsessive, and the way she treats him feels patronizing. She wants to look out for him because she loves him, but it's in a selfish way.
Examples: as a kid injuring him and then asking him if he still wants to join the Scouts, FORCING him to eat, carrying him away from fights, telling him to stop talking (tho indirectly) when talking about his more negative feelings (shown in s1 and s3).
My biggest pet peeve is the scene where he figures out the ODM gear and Mikasa is like "he's happy he doesn't have to leave me" which is NOT AT All what he was thinking but sure girl project your bs onto him
^ seriously none of that was okay. And yeah Eren had moments where he's rude to her or has hit her bc he didn't reciprocate her feelings. He was treating her like he'd treat anyone else.
Worse of all we never see get any real development. (Least not in the anime. Maybe the Manga does it better) she's still over protective to the point it's almost patronizing and outside of protecting him, she has zero ambitions for herself. You can't even say she let him go when she killed him bc even then she didn't move on!
Now what I would have liked to have seen- and I've seen some fan-work creators take this direction- is for them to have more of a sibling relationship.
Imagine this. Everything still happens mostly the same but her motivations are different. It's a found family/sibling sort of love. She wants to protect him bc he's like a little brother to her.
Because Carla begged her to look after him (which is canon)
And so her motivation for protecting him had been to bc of this. Bc Carla begged her, too. Because Eren is the only family she has left.
(And maybe dialing back some of her obsessive tendencies)
And had both gotten growth? Her learning she doesn't have to always look out for him. That he can take care of himself, and him understanding that she was only doing it bc they're the only family they have left and him accepting her as such?
There's also my personal issue that I don't see any build up or reciprocation on Eren's some until the very end so as you can guess I don't ship Eremika. Any defense you could have like him being protective of her or holding her hand he also does for Armin and Historia.
But people act like him not loving her back makes him a bad person or that he treated her bad for not feeling the same? Just because someone loves you doesn't mean you have to feel the same, no matter what they do for you. And I'm saying that as someone who's been on the other end of that! Also personally if someone treated me the way Mikasa treated Eren I'd personally consider her a bad friend. If I can't talk to you about my morbid and depressed thoughts why are we even friends?
Also, I'm not expecting anyone to agree. If you wanna have a calm conversation about it, I'm absolutely down, but don't come in my chats yelling.
