hi, amy! how are you? i admire a lot your writing and i wanted to ask if you have any tips to write powerful and creative metaphors, please

I just reblogged two of my favorite writing related posts, one of which directly deals with the topic of imagery. As an addition, it always helps me to think about what I want to convey with a specific image. The "the road is cuved like a cat's tail" example Ocean Vuong is not a fan of, for example, could work for me if we connect it to a description of headlights as yellow eyes and thus create the image of a WHOLE cat, a predatory animal able to pounce at any moment. Which conveys a sense of anxiety, of slumbering danger, perhaps of false peace. Take all what I say here with a grain of salt because I tend to get overly stuck on imagery to a point that maybe is overbearing. Ocean Vuong and Chuck Palahniuk most likely are better teachers, but oh well. To illustrate my point about thinking what exactly you want to say, I translated and explained some of the images I have written (all from my bigger writing project because I was too lazy to search somewhere else lmao) to showcase my thought process and aims with creating them.

“She wonders which parts of her people have chosen and savoured like a rich piece of meat.” – The main idea here revolves around consumption. I link the consumption of revenge p*rn to a slight steakhouse atmosphere, where people explicitly choose which parts of an animal they want to eat. The woman’s body thus is reduced to its parts (dissolving of the body is a bigger theme in general) and what these parts can do for the “customer”. There is also an element of sensuality, as well as a slight cannibalism edge if you want to look for it.

“Her mother once told Alison that talking to her was like pulling teeth. Now her teeth are pebbles in her hand.” – (Let’s ignore the doubling of “teeth” that I still don’t know what to do with.) Here, I wanted to connect being vulnerable and revealing yourself to actual physical harm and a feeling of loss upon discovering that you just opened yourself up to somebody else. It’s also just a nice turn of phrase.

“Her body is a frayed rope, and so she remains like this, coiled up into him.” – Frayed rope = being worn out, maybe having pulled a muscle, fatigue, anxiety, being overwhelmed. The “coiled up” expands on this idea and really gives a sense of physical closeness.

“His hug yanks her back into her body the way a fish is pulled out of water.” – This one is focused on movement and a certain harshness and violence. It’s also implied that resting within her body is the unnatural state.

“Much of it is food she recognizes from childhood, but her parents’ fridge is a loved, worn-down apartment, while hers resembles a storage room.” – This one is meant to point out emotional connection to food, or a lack thereof. I like the idea of the fridge as a space akin to a building.

“The night in November is a tear in her veil of virtue, her thoughts are manic fingers widening the hole.” – Again, I was thinking about movement: How do I convey frantic thoughts? I like the image of the manic fingers because it reminds me of depictions of addiction and withdrawal, as well as the way people pick at their skin. It also makes me think of freeing yourself from something that is suffocating you, hence the hole idea. Love a good hole moment too (absence!).

“Her tongue is strange and heavy in her mouth, a leech stuck to her throat." – Slimy! I think this one most appropriately ticks Ocean Vuong’s “connection of sensuality” box. I like that it’s disgusting and, like the teeth phrase earlier, shows a disconnect between thought and speech, an inability to communicate. Very gothic in a way.

“Shame grows within her, heavy and [soft/furred]; her body turns into a rotten fruit.” – Apart from the fact that it’s a little biblical, it also is reminiscent of a peach, giving it all a sexual edge.

“She cannot look at his handwriting, the sharp curve of his C [gouges/drills] itself into her abdomen.” – Sex! Pain! Grief! The intimacy of somebody’s handwriting! The C as a dagger!

I feel like the slowest runner would be Robin, imo (if this surprises yall then so be it 😞) he just. doesnt seem like the type of kid would be fast, plus he doesn’t do sports. he may be strong and can throw a punch but he’s not a runner

Amy doesn’t seem like a fast runner either, she doesn’t seem like a sporty person, but she’d probably do gymnastics. Running is probably one of her least favorite things 😭

Donna wouldn’t really be that fast at running. She does good in like gym class when it’s time for the mile but besides that running is something she would not enjoy

Vance doesn’t give fast runner vibes. He speedwalks guys it’s just canon /hj But like genuinely he just doesn’t seem fast. Like Robin, he’s strong, not fast

Gwen is a somewhat fast kid and that’s practically canon. I think she would do sports and would be a fast runner

Billy is a fast kid also. He seems like the kid that would go on runs with his dog :') I think he’d like being fast and he seems like he was an energetic kid

Bruce is also fast. I don’t think he’d be a HUGE fan of running but he uses it to his advantage. He only runs when he doesn’t hit a home-run since getting to home base isn’t guaranteed!! But he only tries when he HAS to

Finney is like second fastest. In my au mf had to run from the grabber AGAIN so he’s gotta GO GO GO he may have asthma but he’d be fast as fuck

Q: Who did Vaklorvek murder? Also do T'Rahni'hk and Kirinnin have a good relationship?

A: Vaklorvek was a passenger on a transport ship which was caught up in some typical star trek alien bullshit because a Starfleet ship was involved in helping it through what seemed to be engine trouble. A powerful entity soon destroyed the transport ship, killed most of the passengers and he was part of the few that were alive (Moved along with a few others to the Starfleet vessel for safety). The entity informed them all that it would stop and leave the rest alive if they chose one person to sacrifice. No one on board was willing to sacrifice anyone or be sacrificed. They would all stick together until the bitter end to find a way to defeat this thing! While this was happening Vaklorvek tricked one of the crewmen onto an escape pod which he then trapped them in. He'd programmed it to leave the ship then encrypted it so the crewman couldn't escape in time. The entity 'ate' the pod and the crewman inside it and, satisfied, left the rest of them alive as promised. Vaklorvek didn't hide what he'd done and once they reached Federation space he was immediately placed under arrest. To this day he expresses no remorse for his actions and T'Rahni'hk is unsure how exactly to interact with him as he's stated before that he did what he did to ensure that she lived. T'Rahni'hk and Kirinnin get along very well! Kiri holds his sister in very high regard, thinking she's very intelligent - if only she would stand up for herself. T'Rahni'hk meanwhile finds her brother a bit unruly and difficult to understand but she tries her best to remain close with him and is relieved that he seems to be responding well to her efforts. He's very brash in contrast to her so she can get overwhelmed or roped into what he wants to do very easily. Her mother often scolds her for letting him get away with too much and sneaking him candy. He doesn't need candy! The only thing she really chastises him for is speaking too emotionally and being rude to others. (He's still learning how to fully control his emotions). When she's home he makes her play one million games with him.

I don't have a link, but the "Tong Incident" refers to a poll that got a LOT of notes for a very specific reason a few months ago, entirely centered around this

Yup. A pair of tongs. The problem is, they had EVERY name for this, EXCEPT tongs! And people LOST IT over that! I think it has somewhere between 150k and 200k notes by now?

Now I'm not sure if everyone else refers to things like this, but to me "Tong Incident" type polls means when people make polls that intentionally make people feel negative emotions just to get notes!

I have a personal rule, when it comes to having an online presence (I may not be a big blog, but it makes a difference!). I want to make something that people can be happy browsing, no matter what. Everything I post, I do everything I can to avoid making things more unfriendly. Not every opinion has to be put on the internet! Not every take must be talked about! Not every upsetting thing is a 'problem'!

I'm ranting.

The point is, the Tong poll made me realise that a lot of polls are made to upset people into giving them more notes. I love to get notes; reblogs feel amazing. But I refuse to get those at the expense of upsetting people! I would rather get my following the right way, rather than exploiting the system of tumblr.
