Power washing can be an efficient way to get rid of dust from surfaces, but it also can carry dangerous chemical substances that would trigger damage if they enter an open wound. 5 Dangerous Misconceptions Architects Have About Starting Their Own Practice
was originally published on: https://sdaarchitect.net
The harsh reality of practicing architecture – – and how you can avoid making the biggest mistakes of your architect career.
There are many good reasons for starting your own architectural practice – – and I’ve written about many of the benefits at length, in previous posts.
But its equally important to learn to begin to recognize when your reasons for being self-employed aren’t supported by the reality of architectural practice.
So I felt that it would be the responsible thing to do to caution young architects, in the prime of their career, against mistakes and misconceptions that may lead to you making a decision you later regret.
So why do you want to start your own architectural practice?
REASON 1
I want freedom in how I work. I want to live and work on my own terms, and keep my own hours. I don’t want to have to ask my boss for permission every time I want a day off, or if I need to leave office early. I don’t want someone to dictate my daily schedule to me.
WHY THIS HURTS YOU
There’s an old joke in architectural business circles – “quit your job – – be your own boss – – work your own hours – – any 18 hours a day you like!”
If you want to start your own architectural practice because you think you’ll have to work LESS or because you think you’ll be able to live by your own preferred work hours and schedule, you’re sadly mistaken.
Because when you’re a self-employed architect, running your own company, you still have a boss. In fact, you have several – – every single client of yours is your boss – – and I’m not saying that lightly.
In fact, if you’re an employee in an architectural studio, and you fail to deliver results, you’re largely shielded from negative consequences, because your employer takes the blame, and has to ultimately deal with the client end repurcussions.
If you’re an employee, as long as you’re abiding by the schedule set by the firm, your employer is responsible for making sure the company is cash flow positive and you can get your salary paid on time (or get paid at all).
That’s another schedule the practicing architect has to stick to – – the payment schedules of his/her employees.
So, if you want to start a practice, realize that it means that you’ll have to commit to the schedules of your clients, your employees, the consultants you work with, rental payments of office space, infrastructure and maintenance costs.
All of these have unforgiving schedules, and you’re going to be responsible for maintaining them.
You have to be willing to take responsibility and be willing to deal with everything that can go wrong in the architectural projects you tackle whilst still paying your employees on time, whilst meeting and communicating with your clients when they find it convenient.
So its not an escape from some sense of restraint, its not any idealistic sense of “freedom” – – whilst you do get to “keep your own hours” superficially, remember that you also have to accept and commit to multiple schedules, schedules where any deviation may tank the company or damage a client relationship, or delay a projects completion.
REASON 2
I want to design and be the author and creator of my work. I want to be in complete control of the creative process and the direction I take it in.
WHY THIS HURTS YOU
This is actually a good reason and legitimate to an extent – – so it’s unfair to say its completely fallacious.
But the way this kind of thinking hurts you as a practicing architect is in its incompleteness.
Yes, to be in control of the design process is extremely important to us architects, and as the sole proprietor of an architectural practice, you will effectively “be in charge” – – but ONLY as long as you realize and respect the fact that you’re not the only one who has that privilege. You’re sharing that top spot with your clients. And since they’re investing the most into the project, it makes sense that they deserve to have a say in the process.
This is something that many young architects really find themselves struggling with, because they would ideally love to have a Howard Roarkian career, the stereotype of the architect as a righteous “lone wolf” who succeeds in spite of his/her clients’ mediocrity.
And yes, although you are technically the expert consultant, you are the primary decision maker – – you still have to remember that its your responsibility to strike a happy balance between your creative goals and what your clients need from you.
As much as architecture is art, its also a service industry founded on win win collaboration. So if you want to start an architectural practice because you just want to be in a position where you can design whatever you want, then you’ll end up limiting yourself to projects where you’re able to successfully bludgeon your clients into agreement.
REASON 3
I don’t like being an employee – – and I hate office politics.
WHY THIS HURTS YOU
Because its another half-truth. To an extent, its an excellent reason to be self-employed – – in fact, many self-employed architects started their own practice because they repeatedly had experiences where they were in jobs where they hated the inefficiency, poor design decisions made due to undue influence, nepotism, favoritism etc.
And if you start your own architectural practice, and you just focus on small projects, you can avoid dealing with ‘politics’. But that leads again, to that issue of scale – – beyond a certain scale of project, you’re going to have to deal with multiple decision makers, boards of directors, committees, chains of command where decisions are endlessly delayed – – and in these situations, you’ll have to learn how to be socially calibrated. Office politics are going to seem laughable in comparison to the politics you’re going to have to acquaint yourself with as a practicing architect.
So if you think that by starting a design practice, you’ll be spared the annoyance of having to negotiate social and professional hierarchies, the complexities of group management and appeasement, and learning to deal with powerful people at different levels of seniority – – – you’re most likely going to end up only doing small projects. If that’s what you want, that’s great. But don’t paint yourself into a corner by thinking you can avoid politics.
REASON 4
I’m underpaid as an employee. As an employer (and captain of my own ship) I’ll be able to pocket a lot more money per hour of my time. My hourly rate as an architect employee is scandalously low, and unsustainable.
WHY THIS HURTS YOU
This isn’t a phenomenon specific to architecture – – I can’t remember the last time I met an employee (in any industry) who complained that their company overpaid them, and they wish they weren’t getting such a high salary.
This happens because architect employees are often not aware of how salaries get determined in industries. They feel that their paycheck or hourly rate is calculated on the basis of how good their work is, and the expertise they bring to the table. That’s true to an extent, but not the determining factor. In reality, if you’re an employee in an architectural company, your architects salary is a reflection of the exchange value of the service you’re providing, compounded with the relative abundance or scarcity of the availability of that service.
In recent decades, opportunities for architectural education have expanded rapidly, resulting in a large workforce of young architects eager to embark on their careers as design professionals. In comparison, the demand for architectural employees has been somewhat relatively “inflexible”, exacerbated by economic fluctuations that have affected the progress of construction projects.
The market resolves this dissonance by adjusting the average salary of an architect – – and this may be lower than what you feel you deserve, and you may be right in thinking that your expertise should be worth more. But that’s just how the market works. At SDAARCHITECT, we get far more job applications than we’d ever be able to even interview – – and I don’t say that to impress you, but to impress upon you that the market is extremely competitive right now.
Now, if you think you’re going to immediately start earning more money by starting your own practice, that may not work out the way you imagined. Because you have to remember that, as a business owner, you’re often rewarded for your risk tolerance and your ability to manage cash flow in times of crisis.
In fact, if you’re an employee at an architecture firm, you’re atleast consistently assured a monthly paycheck – – your employer protects you from the uncertainty that all businesses deal with – – delays in payment at the client end, sudden infrastructure or operational expenses, time periods when the company participates in design competitions where success isn’t guaranteed.
Architects who succeed in running a practice are able to do so by being extremely tolerant of financial ups and downs. So if you want to start a practice, do it if you want to challenge yourself and increase your ability to manage risk, at the same time ensuring job security for your employees – – don’t do it just because you think you should get paid more.
REASON 5
I’m better at my work than my boss is. I’m more organised. I’m a better designer. I hate having to work with/under people who aren’t as competent as I am. If I was in my boss’s position, I’d streamline this company so well. I think I should just start my own practice, I’m tired of being held back by the limitations of my work environment/colleagues/superiors.
WHY THIS HURTS YOU
Over the years, I’ve heard this argument so many times that I’ve labelled it the “Wizard Of Oz” fallacy – – a reference to the classic book/movie where the protagonists are initially aware of all the work that’s done “behind the curtain” ie behind the scenes.
The thing is, you may be right. You might be a better designer or project co-ordinator than your boss. You may be more creative, more original, more daring with your design ideas. You may be quicker on your feet and excellent at implementation.
But are you as good at getting clients as your boss is?
Are you better at managing payroll?
Are you better at negotiating with clients, presenting projects to committees, being able to balance the concerns of all the stakeholders of a project – – at the same time ensuring that your office runs smoothly when you’re running around putting out multiple fires.
Are you better at spending all your weekends finding ways to improve how the practice is run, making infrastructural decisions, employee training and delegation, hiring and firing.
Are you better at taking full responsibility for any mistakes your employees may make that may result in delays, increased project cost, building structure or performance issues, or litigation.
Are you better at accepting the fact that you’re the linchpin of this operation, that, if you fall sick for a month, multiple projects may fall apart and your employees may not get paid.
Being a practicing architect means you’re willing to take all those concerns on board. I’ts not just about being better at making a design concept than your boss is. Be careful and aware of the scope of your responsibilities when you decide to start your own architectural practice.
CONCLUSION
This isn’t an article meant to dissuade you from starting your own firm. I made the decision to be self employed decades ago, so it would be very hypocritical to advise against it.
By the same token, over the years I’ve mentored many young architects and seen similar patterns, similar misconceptions.
And I found myself realizing that many young architects – – although extremely talented and hardworking and with the best of intentions – – have an incomplete perspective when it comes to the reality of architectural entrepreneurship.
I hope that this will help you make more informed decisions about what you feel is the right choice for you – – and if you do decide to start your own firm, you can do so strategically, ultimately ensuring that you can have lasting success in your career as a practicing architect.

TOP TECH TRENDS TO SHAPE YOUR CAREER IN 2022
Tumblr media
2022 Top technologies to shape your career
Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
Artificial Intelligence (AI) , although started gaining popularity a decade ago, still continues to be one of the new technologies today because its remarkable effects on how we live, work, and play are still in the early stages. AI is already popular for its use in applications for image and speech recognition, navigation programs, smartphone personal assistants, voice assistants, and much more.
A B2B research firm “Markets and Markets” suggested that the AI market is expected to grow to a $190 billion industry by 2025. So, with AI spreading its wings across sectors, new jobs will be created in development, programming, testing, support, and maintenance. Even the salaries provided for these jobs will be quite high, thus, AI technology is the trend to watch out for.
Robotic Process Automation
Just like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is another trending technology that is automating jobs. RPA in general is the use of multiple software and applications used for automating business processes such as data collection and analysis, customer service, and other repetitive tasks, which were managed previously through manual processes.
RPA is a rapidly advancing technology that generates many jobs across different industries. It offers several new career options and trajectories such as a programmer, project manager, business analyst, or consultant.
Edge Computing Cloud computing previously was a new technology trend to watch, however, with major players like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform dominating the market, Cloud computing has become mainstream.
Although organizations are adopting Cloud solutions today, they have found several limitations in this technology. And thus, it is not an emerging technology trend. Edge is.
Edge computing is designed to help bypass the latency that Cloud Computing causes and helps organizations to get data into a data center for processing.

No slacking allowed: Companies keep careful eye on work-from-home productivity during COVID-19 | CBC News
Tumblr media
Heads up, Canadians who are working from home. If you thought your new arrangement was a licence to slack off, or make a little less effort — think again.
The boom in people doing their jobs off site during the COVID-19 lockdown has led to rising interest in services that help employers remotely monitor their workers' productivity.
ActivTrak, Teramind, Hubstaff and Time Doctor are some of the U.S.-based companies that provide employee monitoring software.
Bosses can use a "dashboard" that shows data about individual workers, including their screen time, the activity of their computer mouse, shots of what's on an employee's screen at any given time, and in some cases, even their physical location via GPS.
Austin, Texas-based ActivTrak says the company has seen a spike in customer inquiries. A spokesperson said there's been a 35 per cent increase in demand for information and product demos from Canada since the pandemic began but wouldn't cite specific sales figures.
Miami-based Teramind said "customer interest" globally is three times normal levels but didn't have Canadian figures available. The company said it's unable to release sales figures or identify customers, citing non-disclosure agreements.
And in Indianapolis, Hubstaff co-founder Dave Nevogt said his company's website has had 7,000 visitors from Canada since the start of March, according to Google Analytics — a 15 per cent increase from before the pandemic.
Nevogt said 550 Canadian firms have signed up for a free trial in that time, and 79 have already purchased Hubstaff software.
Productivity measures changing
Demand remains high from new customers all over the world, Nevogt said.
"In a normal month, we might have 5,000 trials starting; now, we're around 15,000," he said.
"If you're managing projects and you're used to managing somebody by looking over their shoulder and that person is right there, and then all of the sudden they're not, how do you get that control in place?"
Companies pay between $7 and $10 US per month for each employee on the system.
Revenue Accelerator of Vancouver is a company that uses Hubstaff's services. Its team of 25 employees helps other companies, mostly in the technology field, find and develop sales leads.
The company's chief operating officer, Jackson Fregeau, says Revenue Accelerator signed with Hubstaff close to a year ago but has found it to be even more valuable during the pandemic.
"We had half of our company working remotely before this, and since COVID, now everybody is remote," he said. "We need to be holding people accountable. We need to know what people are working on. And I think it helps people stay more focused as well."
Fregeau said the software provides an alternate way to measure productivity.
"We used to measure their performance by results — the number of meetings booked — but now, potential customers aren't responding the way they used to, and we have to measure against the time the team is putting in, even if it's not producing a result."
Workers limited in what they can reject
Andrew Monkhouse, an employment lawyer in Toronto, works with small- and medium-sized businesses and often represents employees in disputes.
"Unionized workers have more control over the privacy aspects of their workplaces," he said. "The non-unionized workplace has less control, because generally, the employer is able to institute policies that they think are appropriate, and employees have limited ability to refuse reasonable practices."
He says there are no Canadian laws against an employer instituting such a system, as long as employees are fully informed about how the system works. But there's also no law requiring employees to agree to having their work monitored at home.
"If the employee says no, however, what happens then?" Monkhouse said. "Because the employer is allowed to say, 'We're going to let you go.' Then that person would need to be paid compensation, which could be as low as three months salary."
Not everyone needs monitoring
Some employers, however, say that their experience during the COVID-19 crisis has shown that working from home can be a great success — even without a monitoring service such as Hubstaff or Teramind.
"We're very proud of how our teams have adjusted," said Tanya Mushynski, vice-president of customer care for the Ontario division of Enbridge Gas.
Of the company's 3,600 employees in Ontario, close to 2,400 are working from home. While maintenance, emergency response and construction teams continue to work in the field, those with desk jobs in billing, regulatory affairs, engineering and other departments have shifted to their homes.
"In terms of the contact centre employees, we have a number of metrics that we track on the work they do, the number of calls they handle, etc.," said Mushynski. "So, we can very easily say they are as productive as they have been previously."
Would Enbridge consider more closely monitoring employees? "I don't know that we've seen a need for it," said Mushynski. "Productivity is good."
'Breaking all the rules'
But not everyone is a fan of pandemic productivity. Even longtime proponents of work-from-home arrangements say current conditions are far from ideal.
A number of factors are important for optimum performance at home, says Nicholas Bloom, a professor at Stanford University in California whose research has shown productivity can improve when workers aren't in the office. Child care is needed, along with a separate room for working. And the decision to work at home should be a choice.
"We're breaking all the rules with COVID," he said, working from a bedroom in his California home.
"I had a call recently with one of my co-workers, and I could see her toothbrush in the background in the corner. She was making the call from her bathroom."
Bloom has had his own mishaps, as well. One of his four children burst into the room where he was on a conference call, shouting their nickname for him, Doodoo.
"The kids thing is really hard," he said.
He says trying to work with young children around is a "productivity disaster." But longer term, with proper conditions, he sees the trend rising.
"The stigma of working at home — sometimes called shirking from home — will be gone, post-COVID," he said. "That has disappeared in just two months."
Can help with billing
Dave Nevogt of Hubstaff says most of his clients are business owners with between 10 and 100 employees, and they're not always focused on snooping.
"It's typically those customers that bill by the hour, and they need the justification of how many hours are actually being worked, so how many hours spent on Client A versus Client B, for invoicing," he said.
He sees the work-from-home trend exploding in the years ahead. "I think the world has become aware that when you work from home, you can be productive, and the workforce is going to want that," he said.
"And the owner is more likely to say I can save costs on my office building with fewer employees there."
Bank of Montreal has announced it intends to allow 30 to 80 per cent of its 45,000 staff members to consider a blend of work from home and time in the office once the lockdown ends.
Twitter said Tuesday it will allow its employees to keep working from home indefinitely, and Waterloo, Ont.-based OpenText Corp., the largest software company in Canada, said it was permanently closing half of its offices and would have some staff continue to work from home after the lockdown lifts.
Lawyer Andrew Monkhouse says there could be tough choices ahead, though, at workplaces that do opt for increased observation of work habits. "Some people would prefer to be monitored than face a layoff," he said.
Even Stanford's Bloom says he sees an upside to monitoring services for some employees.
"On the one hand, it feels spooky and creepy that we're being monitored, but oddly enough, it may be liberating," he said. "If you want to be home and your boss is quite skeptical that you're goofing off, you may want to show that you're doing well."

What it Takes to Be a Physician Assistant
Tumblr media
Reflection
In the article, “7 Powerful Questions to Find Out What You Want to Do With Your Life,” I was made to think about the future I want by answering the seven questions presented to me. My goal is to be a mental health physician assistant, which will require a lot of hard work and sacrifice, but it will bring much happiness. I am extremely passionate about helping people, making them feel better, and changing their outlook on life. This job would allow me to help people every day, I would be able to make their mental state better, which would lead to a happier and better quality of life for my patients while helping me feel like I made a change in someone's life for the better. This job comes with so many more benefits from financial to mental health benefits from helping others.
This job would give me financial independence to succeed in my life goals and maintain the lifestyle I prefer to have. Physician assistants make a decent salary which would allow me to pay off my student loan debt in a timely manner and then continue on to build the life that I see for myself. The salary would allow me to have the future I see for myself that includes a small cottage and forested land, and I would also be able to maintain my slightly more high maintenance lifestyle.
I would have the ability to travel somewhat with vacation time and the ability to move around with my job as long as I can get licensing in the states I choose to practice in. The ability to travel would allow me to fulfill my dreams of vacationing often in the Caribbean with my family and friends. Also, I could move around with my job which would be ideal as I would like to live in the pacific northwest as well as many other places around the United States, but this job also would require a lot of work input to get to the point where I have free time and financial independence.
Physician assistant jobs require quite a bit of schooling including undergraduate school followed by physician assistant school and then perhaps a residency if you are specializing, so it will require quite a bit of hard work and mental fervor. I am a very hard-working individual which I attribute to all the strong, hard-working, female figures in my life. Women like my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother all showed me just how powerful women can be especially when it comes to working and supporting yourself and your family. Overall they taught me how to succeed and work hard for what I want in life. In order to find more information on this job, I consulted the Occupational Outlook Handbook.
Occupational Outlook Handbook
According to the “Physician Assistants,” article in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the job outlook of physician assistants is very high as is the median pay and the education required is only a master's degree. This is a good field to get into as the pay and projected growth of the field is extremely high considering the rather short schooling time.
Physician assistants have many duties that require practicing medicine with other healthcare professionals. They specifically examine, diagnose, treat, and educate patients as well as research treatments and assess patient progress. Since physician assistants work alongside other healthcare workers like surgeons and physicians, their duties differ state to state and institution to institution depending on what the supervising attendant physician allows them to do as well as the state. Physician assistants can work as primary care physicians especially in rural areas with a lack of physicians, or they can work in specialties like emergency medicine, surgery, and mental health. They also can work with different ages of patients.
The work schedule of physician assistants varies greatly, however, across all environments they are often on their feet and making rounds constantly. They also work 40 or more hours a week and they can work nights, weekends, holidays, or be on call.
In order to become a physician assistant, it requires between two and four years of undergraduate school and two years or more of physician assistant school. Also, students can advance by gaining more clinical knowledge in postgraduate programs for specialties. Many students work in related occupations while studying and they need to be licensed by passing the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination. They take the recertification exam every 10 years as well. They must be proficient in communication, compassion, and problem-solving.
Physician assistants make $108,610 median pay with many earning more than that but none earning less than $69,000. The projected growth of the job outlook is 31% between 2018 and 2028. This is significantly higher than most other professions due to the fact that there is a high demand for healthcare providers for the aging population. Also, the pacific northwest and northeast have high employment rates for physician assistants due to the accumulation of grey state statuses.
Although the statistics and data on projected job growth, salary, and other data are important, it is also important to understand what someone in the field actually experiences. In order to get more information about what the job actually entails I contacted Michele Dugan, a retired psychologist.
The Interview
Have you ever been gripped by the feeling that you could do more or that you could be more? This is a common feeling of many people who are in the field of helping others, much like Michele Dugan who saw all the good she did as a social worker and strived to do more by becoming a psychologist. Dugan was married and had children already when she decided to go back to school to study clinical counseling at Kutztown University in order to pursue her newfound higher purpose. Much like Dugan, I feel the call to help people on a more person-to-person, objective, and psychological basis. I always felt a pull towards the realm of medicine, however, I never really considered psychiatric medicine until I started working on an acute care behavioral health unit. Through working with my patients and coworkers I noticed that I truly enjoy the environment and in life, I want to pursue something that allows me to help those who are psychologically ill.
During our conversation, Dugan began by telling me about her life, the paths she took, and what led her to the very position she is in today as an accomplished, retired psychologist. Dugan moved to Kutztown in 1977 from New Jersey with her husband and children. At this point, Dugan already had secured a bachelors degree at Rowan University and had worked as a social worker. Once Dugan got her degree in counseling psychology she started to gather specialties, in fact, in 1995 she went to San Diego and got certified in clinical hypnosis. She said with much excitement, “Clinical Hypnosis sets me apart from other psychologists. That would be my biggest piece of advice to you. Find something you are passionate about and find ways to make your treatment different and special to broaden your specialty.”
In Dugan’s time as a social worker, she worked with many different types of people and she was able to explain to me what personality characteristics were most important as well as what she struggled with. Dugan recalled about being a social worker, “It is hard to know that you are sending home a parent who may abuse their child again or a child who may kill themselves. You have no control over what they do when they leave, and they are in severely bad situations.” She then went on to tell me that she turned to psychology for that very reason, she worked with more minor mental illness and relationship issues. Dugan explained to me that in order to be successful in this particular field it is beneficial to be understanding, compassionate and empathetic. She went onto describe that even with all of those traits there are a few cases that you know in your own heart that you could not handle whether the patient is a child molester, rapist, or anything that you do not feel you can handle. This is the point where I really started to connect with her story as I currently work on an adult behavioral health unit and nearly everyday I meet someone who has done acts that I cannot even begin to describe, but even so I hold enough understanding and empathy in my heart to give them proper treatment and respect. Although, hearing her own struggle with this particular issue allowed me to see that I am not alone in this feeling of could I really manage to set my own beliefs aside.
Dugan is now retired but she still holds onto the lessons she learned and manages to keep up with the issues of being a psychologist in the United States. One of the biggest issues she recognizes in the news is the lack of coverage for mental health by insurance policies. She explained to me that it is extremely difficult to turn down a patient just because they do not have the required insurance, which is why she went private practice so that patients could pay out of pocket if they had the means. I never really thought about the insurance side of seeking mental health treatment, which is why I appreciated the chance to talk to Dugan, a private practice psychologist.  She also recognized the lack of long term health care for psychiatric patients as well as the lack of mental health care in general especially in college towns like Kutztown. This led her to focus on patients that were not receiving proper mental health services at the university as well as providing outpatient services for patients who showed a desire to get better. I really enjoyed seeing this as she was drawing on her own strengths, I would also like to focus on patients who actually want to get better as it makes treatment easier. I also would like to work with patients long term to see how they improve and just be able to feel good about what I have done.
Dugan has shown me what it truly means to work in the field of psychology. Even Though, we only met one day for roughly an hour she really opened my eyes to the difference between being a private practice psychologist and a mental health physician assistant. She encouraged me to really focus on developing my level of understanding and empathy as well as continue expanding my horizons by learning specialties like hypnosis that could be beneficial in the field and would set me apart from others. Hearing about how she acted based on emotion and her need to do more reminded me to never give up and to continue working towards what I feel I need to do for others and for myself. Even though the path of mental health is very difficult and many people do not understand your choice to get involved, I know that this is where my mind and heart are leading me. I have a strong desire to help people secure a better state of mental health and I know that this is the area of medicine that calls to me. I feel that everyone feels a pull to some sort of purpose or calling, all that you have to do is become in tune with your own desires, be brave enough to see your desires, and listen to your desires.
Current Event
The Marshall Project, a nonpartisan news organization that specializes in news about the U.S. criminal justice system published an article written by Christie Thompson and Taylor Eldridge, “Treatment Denied: The Mental Health Crisis in Federal Prisons,” in 2018 regarding the lack of mental health programs in the United State and the effect it has had on the prison system and it’s intake of psychiatrically compromised inmates.
According to the article, the Federal Bureau of Prisons instituted a new policy that would get mentally ill inmates better psychiatric care while in prison. However, data directly from the prison garnered by a Freedom of Information Act request showed that the prisons were determining that mentally ill prisoners had no true psychiatric problems even with data showing that they have had psychiatric issues in the past. Essentially, this shows that they are decreasing their number of patients in prison that require psychiatric care and increasing care for very few prisoners rather than providing psychiatric care for the larger majority of prisoners that have had psychiatric problems in the past.
The bureau is not only neglecting inmates who have severe mental illnesses by disregarding their existence, but they also are not providing the resources or incentives to employees to actually care for the mentally ill inmates. They increased the workload of many mental health employees in the prison system but they did not increase the number of employees which leads to overworked employees who feel they are undervalued. Prisoners are often neglected and left with not enough mental health care leading to prison violence and overall destruction of the prisoner's mental state.
This article relates to my career path because these people in the prison system are mentally ill and are not receiving proper care, and the job I intend to have would have me working with these patients. Long term psychiatric care is something that is very lacking in the United States specifically because the funding has been cut to a lot of long term psychiatric hospitals because it is an easy way for the state prisons to save money. However, what they do not see is how much they actually are spending to make up for the lack of care. These people who belong in long term care end up causing public nuisances and then end up in either prison or acute rehabilitation and end up costing the same amount it would have cost them to be in a long term care unit, and they still do not have access to proper psychiatric care in the prison. The mentally ill in prison are often there for minor crimes like robbery or just being a public nuisance but instead of being released with a care plan they are often released with a few more doses of their antipsychotics and no plan. This directly relates to me because I will most definitely have to deal with these patients once I actually get into the field as they typically have nowhere to go. This can be worrisome as some of the mentally ill inmates are actually in prison for harsh offenses like murder and rape, and the likelihood of me having to deal with these patients is rather high as they are often given lenient sentences due to insanity. They then would eventually end up in my care.
This article showed me that even though prisons are claiming that they are advancing the psychiatric care specialties, they are in fact doing so but then cutting care off of patients that need it because they do not have proper resources to staff this new demand. It can be hard to find the staff to work in a high-stress environment like a prison with psychiatric patients, but with enough education and proper training, I feel that it is a field that could really take off and provide a lot of job opportunities. Although the prisons are trying to advance themselves to better care for these patients they should not have to because there should be long term psychiatric care units outside of prison care for the inmates in there for petty crimes. I still want to learn what could be done to increase the amount of long term psychiatric care units or if they could find money in the federal or state budget to support more long term psychiatric units. Overall, I feel this article really connected to me because it showed me that I really will need to be the voice for my patients no matter who they are, and I will have to fight for them to have a proper care plan. After all that is what it means to be a health care worker, you work hard to care for your patient's success and you do not give up on them.

The familiar clatter of shopping carts breaking free from their corral made her flinch inwardly and clutch her bag closer to herself as she walked through the sliding glass doors of her own personal purgatory. The day had yet to begin and with that old bone tired ache drumming a steady beat against her ribcage while financial necessity loped and braided itself around her neck like a hangman’s noose, she knew deep in her soul that today was not going to be a good day. She wanted to go home. Heck, she regretted getting out of bed this morning. Still... it was better for her future to be employed in a job she disliked than to try to get by on what little the state would willingly provide an unemployed student. That being said, the day she finally walked out the front door for that final time, she'd be resisting the urge to moon dance all the way to the parking lot. It would be a long time until that was possible but the distant dream still made a path for the tiny ghost of a genuine smile to cross her lips. Pausing a moment to take a small glance around to judge if today would be busy or not, she was glad to note that it didn’t look like the lines to check-out were overcrowded. The customer service area looked packed, but it was rare to see less than twelve people waiting in line at any given time before 9:00. She started walking once more and smelled a whiff of the faint earthiness from the brightly colored cactus plants that were sold by the anti theft detention system near the greeter’s station. The familiar face of an employee who’s name she couldn’t quite recall… (Greg? Grant?) waved airily at her with all the artificial cheer of a painted clown doll. She waved back, still trying to place his name (the distance between them made it impossible to make out what was displayed on his name tag), the practiced motion having been thoroughly ingrained into her over countless wasted hours devoted to workplace integration videos. The moment of timed obeisance to their company ended and Gabe or Gary(she was fairly certain that it began with a ‘G’) quickly set himself to welcoming the next few people to enter through the doors as she continued on, still idly wondering who it was that manned the door. It probably didn’t matter if his name was Gino or Griff. She wasn’t especially outgoing and the thought of interacting with others made the nervous little butterflies that lived forever in her gut flitter and furl their figurative wings as if pursued by a particularly rambunctious kitten. She had hoped that the time she’d spent completing her training and interacting with others on the job would make that interaction easier but sadly that hadn’t proven the case. Worse still, it had seemed like the gulf between herself and other people had seemed to only widen and she often felt more alone than she had before she’d been hired. A shucked ear of corn slid out of a customer’s overflowing vegtible bag and rolled across her path, causing her to sigh as she bent over to pick it up, and return it to the man. “Thanks.” He’d said, not even bothering to look at her before he’d placed it back with the others in the crate. She frowned and had started to make her way towards the abandoned corn when she’d caught sight of the produce department worker waving her off, pointing to himself then the corn, his unspoken “I got this” was clear as day on his face.  She nodded to indicate her understanding, before she caught sight of the vaguely unnerving gaze of an abandoned plush toy surrounded by a a well-stacked fortress of freshly made marketplace salsa and stone-fired naan chips. One thing that she had become used to seeing while working retail was the various oddities that the customers tended to leave in the most improbable places. At least this time, she thought as she picked up the toy to drop off at the lost and found at customer service, the item left wasn't living. She would never forget how guilty she had felt when she'd discovered one of the store's Betas with the seasonal Valentine's day supplies. The fact that someone had callously abandoned a helpless creature that had never harmed anyone to die among mass produced greeting cards and overpriced chocolates pressed in the form of hearts probably said something mildly phylisophical about people in general but whatever one might have decided called it, she'd taken it as a sign that the fish needed an extra pair of eyes to look after them. The pets area wasn't exactly her section, but checking in on the little guys to make sure they were all present and accounted for was never any trouble. It relieved her to know that they were ok. What would happen to them after she'd finally graduated and left her current job was something she didn't really like to think about so she did her best to put it out of her mind. Shaking the depressing thought from her head as she crossed the double doors that led to the back. Compared to the relative calmness on the sales floor, the receiving area was a flurry of activity as usual, the employees moving crates and pallettes in place as they unloaded the supplies from the food trucks. Without giving much concious thought to the action, her eyes sought out a familiar mop of brown hair. Finding no sight of Amedeus, she purposefully marched up to the card reader next to the computers and swiped her ID. The name 'Marceline' quickly scrolled across the screen and she tapped the 'CLOCK IN' option with more force than what was probably necessary. The system was often finiky and it wouldn't be the first time that it had failed to read a prompt correctly. She’d already sat through the embarrassment of  contacting a salaried manager to help her record the correct hours(she’d tried to take a lunch break and the system had cheerfully alerted her that she couldn’t take a break when she hadn’t yet arrived) and she wasn’t at all eager for an encore performance. The screen informed her that her presence had been noted and she stalked over towards the employees lounge to stow away her perishables in the fridge before beginning her shift. The familiar scent of roasted coffee struck her the minute she entered the room and her face contorted into a sour frown. She hated the sludge her store referred to as coffee but as if eager to worsen her already foul mood, her lack of energy had chosen that moment to smack her in the face and remind her that in order to operate within the required specs of her job, she was going to have to grind up her taste-buds, boil them on the sacrificial pyre of poorly processed coffee seeds, and serve it on a platter of self-castigation. She wasn't particularly picky when it came to coffee, and she could detect  northing in that smell that would indicate that there would be any difference between the brews made in the office and the ones sold in a coffee shop. But,she thought darkly as she picked up one of the small Styrofoam cups, once a person made the mistake of ingesting it, the similarities stopped there. She brought it to her lips and winced, her body seizing up as it tried to process what it was consuming. Marceline had never eaten tobacco products, nor had she ever chosen to smoke, so her thoughts on the matter would be considered anecdotal at best, but that cloyingly bitter smell that wafted out of cheap cigarette butt was the closest analogy she had at her disposal that came to truly describing the abject awfulness that was her store’s coffee. Sadly, while she could openly declare the taste of it to be literally sickening, it didn’t stop her from taking a cup or three when she needed the caffeine. Beggars couldn’t be choosers and free was still free. When the situation called for it, like today, she just had to grin and bear it. The store expected the employees to shroud themselves with a mask of false happiness while working. It made sense that they’d expect the same from them when it came to their coffee too. She tossed the cup in the trash, then rolled her eyes in minor annoyance as the object hit the side of the bin and bounced off, landing a good couple of centimeters away from the intended destination. Secretly glad that no one except the security guard who monitored the cameras could have seen that slightly ego-bruising miss, she pitched it directly in it’s place where it thankfully remained(she might not have considered herself an overly prideful girl, but she did set some standards for herself and tossing cups into cans less than three feet away was one of the more unspoken ones). Having accomplished this, she removed the tarragon chicken salad wraps she’d made for herself and Amadeus for Lunch. Truthfully speaking, it wasn’t exactly a meal worth bragging about, but she‘d been wanting to try the recipe  out since she’d found it in the middle of looking for another meal idea. Inspiration had waited until last night, when her brain knew she would have an exam in the morning to strike and had refused to leave her alone until the wraps were finished. On the plus side, she’d been able to sleep after that. On the other, well... it had been 4 am and after a week of poor sleeping habits, it was difficult to tell the pink of her Iris from the tiny red veins that zigzagged across her sclera. She had liked the results well enough when she’d eaten some of what had remained after she’d made their wraps for breakfast, and with any luck Amadeus would enjoy them too. She hoped he would anyway. With the luck she’d been having lately he might have an allergic reaction to it and she’d be forever apologizing to the kindest person she knew for accidentally poisoning him in her ignorance. Having safely deposited the food she’d kept in her bag in the fridge, marked with a name and a date on the side to inform the maintenance workers who were tasked with cleaning the fridge not to touch it(and supposedly deter thieves), she made her way to the locker room to put her bag inside her little padlocked hidey-hole. It was, like her lockers in both high school, and middle school before it, ordered chaos in physical form. The only thing that differentiated the three was the three was the complexity of the course material they contained but not much else. She still had little doodles on the side of some notes and a series of body parts she’d spent time practicing on another, even a little comic she’d created featuring a tiny stick figure that was carrying a box labeled microeconomics coursework. The box gradually increased in size as the panels went on, weighing down her sweaty and exhausted little character as it tried it’s best to carry it’s progressively cumbersome burden. This continued until it reached the final panel, where all that could be seen of her mini dramatis persona was it’s legs and arms, pinned in place by the massive box it had collapsed beneath after it had gotten too big for her abused person to bear.

The One Thing to Do for USA Health Care Strategy
The standard of health maintenance organizations and managed care also have been criticized by this exact group. All 3 countries have universal, government-run wellness care systems. 1 approach to examine healthcare spending is by state.
Instead, he'd create high risk pools for people with expensive pre-existing conditions, and, in place of premium tax credits, Trump would give a tax deduction for purchasing individual medical insurance. An individual who is uninsured that's hospitalized causes the price of health care to rise even greater. While Nestle cannot independently make an employee healthier, we've focused on engagement to enhance health and decrease costs.

Thieves who create wars to guard their interests. A lot of consumers in other nations want McDonald open precisely the same hotel in their countries. Moreover, toys need to be cared much more with many new intriguing toys along with safety.
Having talked to a lot of entrepreneurs working within this area, it appears that the most typical problems they face often come down to obtaining funding and choosing a business model. For instance, the company has to rent more employees and raise their salary as a way to keep them working for quite a long time. I wish you would write a fic where Techie is an abused pet and he's rescued and taken care of by Matt, his new owner.
I really need to learn how to write short drabbles, because for me, 1.5k is a short fic lol.
So this ficlet is in the same universe as this other drabble, so the same warnings of pets/slavery still stand. Additional warning for mentions of abuse.
___
“Mom, I’m fine, I swear…” Matt ran his hand through his thick blond hair as he held his comm to his ear listening to his mother’s ‘concerned’ voice. He didn’t dare call it nagging, even if that was what she was doing. He valued his life too much. “You’re the one who wanted me to get a pet in the first place, and you know my therapist agrees.”
“But from a shelter, Matthew?” His mother sighed, and Matt could just imagine the way she was shaking her head in disapproval, “Why couldn’t you have gone through a reputable vendor? Your brother–”
“Has a much larger salary than I do, mother.” Matt rolled his eyes, “Ben can afford pedigrees and whatever other bantha shit–”
“Language, Matthew.” His mother hissed, “And you know, if you really wanted, I’m sure Ben could put in a good word for you…” Her implication was more than clear to Matt. As if she hadn’t been implying the same thing ever since Matt had gotten his job.
“Mom, I like being a radar technician. I don’t need to be the Senator’s aide, or whatever title Ben officially has.” Matt sighed, “Look, Mom, I’m going to go inside the shelter, I’ll comm you when I get back.”
“Promise me you won’t get something…dangerous?”
Matt didn’t dignify his mother’s request with an answer, simply shoving his comm into his pocket before walking into the building boasting a sign that read 'Republic Pet Shelter.’
The shelter was a far cry from the more high-scale vendors of the pet market, filled with rows and rows of Alphas and Omegas who, for a variety of reasons, were surrendered by their previous owners. Some were seized during criminal investigations, other were simply abandoned, others still were deemed 'too much’ by their owners when they were surrendered. It wasn’t a happy place, but adopting a rescue pet was much cheaper than purchasing a pet from a breeder. And considering that Matt’s current salary meant that he wasn’t exactly swimming with credits, it was his best option.
He spent several minutes wandering up and down the rows of kennels to see Alphas and Omegas of various species looking back up at him. This was going to be harder than he thought.
“Hello there!” Called one of the shelter’s many volunteers, a bubbly Twi'lek Omega, as she walked up to him, “Need help with anything?”
Matt rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, “I guess I just need to find which pet I want to take home.
She nodded, her lekku swaying gently, "And do you have anything in mind when it comes to your pet? Alpha, Omega? Human or otherwise?”
Thinking back to all his hours spent in anger management therapy, and his diagnosis with Overactive Alpha Aggression. HIs therapist had specifically said he needed an Omega pet.
“It will help keep your Alpha hormones in check, taking care of an Omega.”
Matt cleared his throat, “I’ll need an Omega…I can’t live with another Alpha…”
“That’s quite normal, actually. Most pet owners have pets of the opposite orientation as them.” She nodded in understanding, “And do you have a preference in species?”
“Not that I know of…” He shrugged, “But…maybe something on the smaller side?” He murmured weakly. He definitely needed a pet he could hold on his lap while watching a holo, or be able to carry if need be.
The volunteer led Matt past several kennels holding omegas, and Matt would give a small shug, not feeling much either way. Matt wasn’t sure exactly what he was expecting when it came to finding a pet, but to hear Ben talk about him finding Armitage, it made it sound like it was just a natural connection. Then again, Ben was the scion of the family legacy- Force-user and rising star of the Republic. Everything was different for Ben.
A small flash of red caught Matt’s attention, causing him to look into one of the kennels he and his guide were passing.
The reddish-orange mop of hair briefly reminded Matt of his brother’s pampered hound, though that seemed to be the only similarity the cowering Omega in the kennel had from Armitage.
The pet was hugging his knees tightly to his chest, leaning against the side of the kennel and keeping his head down. His limbs were long and gangly, though it seemed more from lack of nutrition than from natural litheness. If Matt looked hard enough, he swore he could count the poor thing’s ribs.
“Oh…I see you’ve met Techie.”
Matt looked over at the Twi'lek, “Techie?”
She nodded, looking into the kennel with a sad smile, “He came in last week after a Judge raid on a drug-lord’s den.” At Matt’s raised eyebrow, she continued, her voice lowered, “His owner was the drug-lord. She’s dead now, but not before doing a number on him.”
Matt nodded in sympathy, remembering the years of therapy Ben had to go through after their parents learned that Ben was being preyed upon by an old Force-user. Those kinds of wounds were hard to heal.
A small pink slip hanging on the kennel’s door caught Matt’s attention, “What’s this?” He asked.
“That’s our tag to identify our special needs pets.” The Twi'lek nodded, “Techie’s eyes were gouged out by his old owner. They had been replaced with cybernetics but…well, the shelter hasn’t been able to afford the upkeep on them.”
“I’m a technician.” Matt blurted before he could stop himself, “I could easily maintain their upkeep.”
And he could, he realized. He had more than enough parts and wires and tinkering doo-dads littered around his place. At least with Techie’s cybernetics, he’d be doing something useful with those items.
The Twi'lek looked surprised, then her face became very seriously, “Sir, I appreciate your willingness, but I do want you to understand that a pet is a very big responsibility. It’s a lifetime commitment, not a hobby.”
Matt blushed at her gentle reprimand. “I understand. It’s just…well, I can take care of him.”
She crossed her arms, “Techie is very skittish, especially around Alpha who have temper issues.”
Was he really that obvious? He was doing infinitely better than he had been before therapy, it had been weeks since his last…episode. He cleared his throat, “I’ll admit, I do have OAA, but…I’ve been attending therapy and I’m taking medication. My therapist says that having an Omega pet would curb my urges even more.”
“Yeah, he may be good for you.” She nodded, “But will you be good for him?”
Matt took a deep breath, counting to ten in all the languages he could in his head before speaking again, “I have every intention of giving Techie a caring home, and providing for his needs, special or otherwise.”
The Twi'lek gave him a hard stare before the hard line of her shoulders relaxed, “I better not see him at this shelter again because you were too much of a limp-knot alpha to actually take care of him.”
Matt had to resist the urge to grin (he was sure she wouldn’t appreciate the gesture). Instead, he simply nodded, “Of course.”
It wasn’t until after all the paperwork was filled out, and the volunteer had managed to get Techie into a soft collar and leash before handing the lead to Matt that he realized with a sense of sudden dread that he had officially become a pet owner. As if that wasn’t hard enough, he had custody of a pet that had suffered abuse and maiming that would require intensive maintenance for the rest of his life.
His life that he would now spend with Matt.
Well, too late now to change his mind. He could only make the best of it. Starting by getting to know his new pet.
“Um…” Matt started, looking at the young Omega at the other end of his leash.
Techie flinched at the sound of his voice, stepping back as far as his leash would allow.
“Hey, hey there. You don’t need to be scared.” The words sounded stupid, even as Matt said them. He couldn’t berate himself, though, it would only scare Techie more, “I know things seem scary right now, especially if your eyes aren’t working… But I’m your new owner, and even though I don’t know everything your old owner did to you, I promise I won’t hurt you.”
He knew words were cheap when it came to abuse victims. He could promise Techie the world, and it wouldn’t make him any less scared. Only time and actions could win Techie over.
“Techie…I’m going to reach out and take your hand, and I’m going to lead you back to my speeder, alright?” He began awkwardly, before slowly reaching for Techie’s hand.
When his large, rough hand touched Techie’s, the Omega flinched back slightly. Matt didn’t move, instead waiting for Techie to slowly relax, the back of his hand touching Matt’s fingers. Matt gently took Techie’s hand in his own before leading him away from the shelter. “When we get back to my place, I’ll see what I can do to fix the wiring in your eyes so you can see for yourself.”
Several awkward moments passed as Matt gingerly secured Techie in his seat in the speeder. Then,
“…really?”
Matt smiled softly, “Yeah, really. I’m Matt, by the way. I’m a radar technician.”

The story behind Mill Farm Eco Barn
People often ask how we have ended up running Mill Farm. Here I describe my decision to give up a career in Bristol to set up Mill Farm Eco Barn with my husband Neil. Find out what running a holiday business involves and how finding work that works has been the secret to her success.
How did you set up Mill Farm?
Mill Farm began in 2012, Neil had a crazy plan to set up a holiday business in Norfolk. I was pregnant with our second child and on a good salary working as a Director at the environmental charity, the Soil Association in Bristol. Like many changes in my life, it started as an off the cuff remark “if we ever want to do anything different, we need to do it soon” I remember saying to Neil. “At the moment we can get a mortgage, but we won’t if we go down to one income” this conversation set something in motion. After that Neil kept disappearing, spending evenings on Rightmove and I hadn’t quite realised what I’d done!
A year later, we’d purchased Mill Farm, which back then was a ramshackle house where we live now, the shell of an old barn (with planning permission for residential conversion) and a collection of old sheds and outbuildings. Whilst on maternity leave, I’d also managed to get some Rural Development Funding from the European Union to develop the barn as a high end self-catering holiday home and a centre of excellence for sustainable tourism. The grant had to be spent quickly so we sold up in Bristol, I took redundancy and we moved to Norfolk. Or at least the kids and I did - Neil commuted to work in Bristol for the first 3 months!
Looking back, knowing what it is like to have a 6 month old and a 2 year old and managing a self-build project,  I probably would have said no way but I went along with it and I’m pretty glad I did. I cruised play groups trying to make friends and in doing so radically improved my driving skills – I’d only ever travelled by bike before. Once the kids were finally in bed we spent the evenings, filling in grant claim forms, researching building materials and with the help of a good friend we developed the marketing plan for the business.
It was a crazy time. Neil moved up permanently in March 2013, the build was complete in September. The trips around the play groups became very useful as I shamelessly called the Mum’s up and asked if they or their handy partners could construct and move furniture in the hours before we opened and they came, thank goodness. Since then we have hosted over 600 groups, couples, families and friends in our barns. We have made friends, at least 3 couples have moved to the area since staying with us and we are going to a guests wedding in December. We feel we have contributed to the local village by spearheading a campaign to improve the children’s play area (we raised over £35,000), we have put a path on our land so guests and locals can walk the route more easily and planted over 2000 hedge plants and trees. I even joined the parish council. I have to admit though, I don’t really remember my youngest’s first two years!
What’s it like running Mill Farm now?
It surprises me, still, how much effort it takes. Firstly, there is the constant development of the site and what we offer. Neil has a very clear vision for the site and he won’t stop until it is complete. Last September he added a wildlife pond and is managing the paddocks for wildlife . This year we are revamping our games barns as well as bringing back chickens.
It has also been a real family affair. Neil’s parents are local, anyone who has stayed with us will have met Terry who looks after the grounds and the guest allotment and Shona who does all the linen for the barns. My folks, albeit further away, have been a huge help to – editing websites, making furniture and much more.
I’m the main point of contact for bookings and enquiries. At Mill Farm we're passionate about providing great service and a beautiful destination for group get-togethers.  We've focused on every detail to make the barns feel like home rather than formulaic holiday lets, so we're well-equipped from the kitchen to baby equipment to books, games and DVDs. Our aim is to ensure guests have a memorable holiday - we want them to fall in love with the barns and the area as much as we have.
Part of my job is going the extra mile for guests. If they're coming for a family celebration, I can help them organise a cake, caterers and even a photographer. We also provide a huge amount of advice to guests in the lead up to and during their stay. I've also started writing blog posts to give guests more insider details that might be helpful for their stay.
Fridays are my craziest day. This is the day we say goodbye to guests and welcome new ones. I usually bake a loaf of sourdough bread for our Eco Barn guests which goes in their welcome basket, together with other homemade goodies such as fresh eggs, organic produce from our allotment, locally-made jam and a freshly baked cake by our baker friend Andrew. My day revolves around supporting our team of cleaners and responding to any maintenance issues.
Sometimes I work in the Eco Barn
By far most of my time though is taken up by marketing. I’m not a marketing person by background so this hasn’t come easily to me. Things have changed so much, just in the five years we have been operating that it feels that this is becoming a bigger job, not a smaller job.  The main issue is visibility. I know we have a great product but getting the message out and sustaining our on-line presence is really hard. Whilst Google and Facebook are constantly changing, making it hard to keep up as a sole operator,  online travel agents are having a bigger and bigger impact on the market making it harder for small businesses to be found.  I try hard to get direct bookings as it benefits both the guests (you have a more personal experience and it's cheaper) and us as a smaller business.
Managing Kids and work
Hands downs this has been the hardest issue for me. I still think I’d like to return back to work someday, I spend a lot of time ruminating over this. Do I actually have the time? What would I even do? Do I really want to give up the flexibility?  In so many ways I am so very lucky, yes my work is very fluid (so I do feel like I am constantly at work) but I have 100% flexibility. I pick my kids up from school most days and can cover their holidays. That stress of who is picking them up today, isn’t generally part of our lives.
Recently I have become much stricter about how I work too – I am not sure why it took me so long to figure this out but the following measures have really made a massive difference (but I am only 2 weeks in).
a)I have dedicated hours in the week, which I plan a week in advance
b)I sit down to complete tasks – rather than just ‘be’ at my desk
c)I sort the tasks out around weekly themes – to avoid fliting from one thing to another
d)I have joined Facebook groups and such as the Boostly Academy and Vacation Soup – these international groups are made up of people in the same business as me, we exchange ideas, take part in group activity and learning and this has 100% reduced the feeling of isolation and helps give me focus and a sense of how my marketing needs to change.
e)I turn off my phone syncs when I am with the kids at the weekend - so distractions are at a minimum. I have muted most of my notifications permanently but guests can still call.
f)I have said no to any further building project until we have had a really ‘big’ family holiday!
g) And yes I need to produce a bi-weekly menu – I hate planning family meals.
On a deeper level I worry that I should still do more. My life is very domestic because we are in hospitality. I work from home, bake bread for guests and sometimes make jam, chutney or home grown apple juice. I do wonder what kind of role model I am for my two girls but I’m hopeful that I’ll find the balance and find a way to contribute more. I guess the next challenge is going to be to find the right part time role, or voluntary post where I can put my background in Environmental campaigning to more use.
