11 Things You Should Never Say on Cozumel
Tumblr media
Cozumelenos are an accepting bunch, but there are a few points you should avoid saying as a foreign guest. As with any community, it is important to be aware of cultural etiquette and prohibited subjects during a vacation on Cozumel. Here is a list of 11 things you should never say on Cozumel.
This is my first time out of North America
Geography observation is of considerable benefit in Mexico, a region that many foreigners believe is in Central or even South America. Mexico is a part of North America, which is why it was included in the North American Free Trade Agreement along with Canada and the United States.
Mexican is a beautiful language
There are 289 individual languages expressed in Mexico. However, none of these languages are designated, Mexican. The term Mexican relates to nationality, not to any language. Spanish is the declared language in the country, with over 99 percent of people speaking it.
How much money do you make
With wealth, Cozumelenos are private, so asking about personal finances is an unthinkable subject. Although this information may be shared between close companions, asking strangers about their salary is a definite no-no.
Chilango
You might hear this word adopted to describe a Mexico City resident, but avoid employing it yourself. The expression has pejorative overtones, and you’re likely to lose friends in Cozumel if you start using it.
I don’t like Mexican food
Cozumelenos are proud of their culinary culture, and they are not the only individuals to recognize that their cuisine was delicious. Avoid generalizing about Mexican cuisine, which is very diverse, with each province using original ingredients and techniques. There is a lot more to Mexican cuisine than Taco Bell, so it is best to leave narrow-minded opinions of melted cheese and burritos at home.
Estupido
I’m certain you can think of many more offensive expressions in English than stupid. But the Spanish equivalent, estupido, is much more powerful and shouldn’t be applied. Call no one else estupido and avoid employing it in any context, even when referring to yourself and those stupid little mistakes we all make from time to time.
Coger
This verb, which means to take, is used in Spain all the time, in taking the bus or taking the metro. In Mexico and throughout Latin America, the word is certain to trigger giggling, because coger is a synonym for a certain four-letter word in English. Suggest no one coger a taxi.
Blasphemous curse words
Those fun curse words you picked up in Barcelona will not thrill people in Cozumel. Cozumelenos would consider certain blasphemous phrases (that are common and used in Spain) as shameful and offensive. Cozumel remains a religious society. Although Cozumel possesses its own impressive pantheon of swear words, they treat the Virgin Mary with admiration.
Happy Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo, or May 5, observes the Mexican Army’s victory over the French during the Battle of Puebla in 1862 (Mexico lost this war). In the United States, the day is a ceremony of Mexican-American culture, but it carries no such importance in Cozumel. Instead, Independence Day on September 16 is the day observed to the celebration of all things Mexican.
Tu to an older stranger
The formal usted, the civil version of you, is still practiced in Cozumel for communications with a boss, an older stranger, or anyone else you would like to present respect to, rather than suggest familiarity. Mexican society is sensitive to position, and the use of usted is more prevalent than in Spain. As a general rule, tu, the informal form of you, is retained for friends, children, and family.
Hurry up
Patience is a virtue in Cozumel. Don’t take it personally if individuals are late for appointments or visitors appear two to three hours after the party was expected to start. There are many reasons for the lateness: a delayed bus, heaving traffic, but you’ll soon understand that the primary reason is cultural. Time in Cozumel is flexible, and struggling to impose foreign standards of punctuality is a certain path to annoyance.
We can help you make your vacation plans a reality here at Stingray Villa Cozumel.

Our Top 6 Weekend Trips from Cozumel
Tumblr media
Cozumel has countless diversity of effervescent drinks, great beach views, and sun-kissed tourists. But what makes this island town even more appealing is the province in which it stands. Rich culture, special food, Mayan origins, and magnificent tropical landscapes form the area around Quintana Roo and the Yucatan Peninsula, an unparalleled spot for any tourist. Here are the top 6 weekend trips from Cozumel. Hop over to these locations for another view of the lush eastern region of Mexico.
Xcaret
This eco-archaeological park along the Riviera Maya is loaded with attractions, natural sites, and cultural experiences that submerge travelers in the jungle backdrops. Nature enthusiasts can rejoice in bird aviaries and confrontations with America’s largest cat, the jaguar. With water slides, interactive animal displays, and maritime adventures, this park offers something special for any traveler. Spend a few days in this park and absorb the thrilling ambiance that contrasts the relaxed atmosphere on Cozumel’s beaches.
Tulum
Leaving behind its notoriety as a sleepy town, Tulum is turning into a regarded destination in the region. Look up and down the coastline of Tulum and there’s not a mega-resort insight. Boutique hotels and shops line the narrow streets of Tulum, giving the entire town a charming and intimate feel. Restaurants serve patrons delicious fare ranging from perfect al dente pasta to popular street tacos. Though the city may go to sleep early, the beachfront Mayan ruins and gorgeous jungle skyline keep a lively outpouring of visitors around for Instagram photo-ops.
Swim in the stunning Lagoon Kaan Luum
This stunning lagoon just south of Tulum is the ideal place for a swim. The gorgeous destination possesses clear, tranquil waters and is generally isolated. Show up in the early morning if you need to make sure you are the only person in wonderland. The lagoon consists of at least two unique shades of blue because its center incorporates a cenote, or sinkhole, reaching a depth of around 260 feet (79 meters). You can find food vendors in the immediate area, and eat next to the lagoon.
Merida
Merida is a colonial capital in the center of Yucatan. Often missed by Cozumel’s diving crowd, Merida is the ideal stop for any adventurer who wants to know more than Top 40 DJs along the Caribbean Sea’s bustling beach bars. Pedestrians squeeze down tight avenues adorned with buildings pasted in colored tattered paint. Colonial structures stand preserved as if showing an accurate snapshot of another era. In Northern Merida, planned neighborhoods and golf courses are patronized by the citizens of this capital city.
Cenote Dos Ojos
Cenotes are natural sinkholes. Mexico is home to three of the greatest underwater systems. This establishes the Yucatan Peninsula region a sanctuary for adventurists who want to play in the local cenotes. Cenote Dos Ojos offers a tiny jungle hike before arriving into the clear underground waters. Snorkeling on the colorful coral reefs in Cozumel is something extraordinary, but this provides a unique experience. Divers looking for exciting thrills come here to confront the cool waters and gaze at the great stalactite and stalagmite formations.
Chichen Itza
Yucatan and Quintana Roo are teeming with ancient Mayan archaeological sites, museums, and ruins. One of the most exemplary of all the ruins is Chichen Itza. Meaning “At the mouth of the well of the Itza people,” the myths and history that envelop these protected ruins are embraced by visitors and Mayans who even reside on this land. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was previously the greatest city in the Mayan civilization. As one of the new seven wonders of the world, Chichen Itza has inserted itself as an exemplary part of any trip to this valuable territory.
We love to advise on our beautiful island and the surrounding area (as the many guests of Stingray Villa can attest to).

Staycation in a Cabin Near My Home
Tumblr media
Looking for a Staycation Near You?
2020 has turned into a REALLY weird year for everyone!  It has affected all of us.  I have had to cancel all reservations from the first week in March through August, and I gave full refunds to all guests.  I have totally missed having guests at Scurlock Farms and the animals have missed the kiddos playing with them.  Many folks are weary of being cooped up for so long, but are not sure about staying in a hotel and coming into contact with people from all over.  They still want to travel, but are leary of flying on airplanes.  Statistics show that many have been looking for staycations where they can rent an entire cabin or home within a two to three-hour drive of their home.  Have you been looking for a staycation near you?  Scurlock Farms offers the perfect solution!
Rocky Overlook is a 2500 square foot home on Scurlock Farms that is perfect for families or couples looking to safely getaway.  Check it out for a staycation with the children.  They will enjoy gathering eggs, riding in a tractor, looking for fossils in the wide white limestone banks of the San Gabriel River, or playing in the large yard.
Palette Pad cabin at Scurlock Farms
Rural Cabin on Riverfront Property
If you have been looking for a staycation near you, look no further!  Scurlock Farms is located in central Texas in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, less than a three-hour drive from Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.  The Palette Pad cabin sits in the middle of the 172-acre farm.  The beautiful San Gabriel River forms the north border of Scurlock Farms, a little over one mile.  You will have access to the river, hiking trails about the farm, access to visit and interact with the farm animals - horses, goats, and cattle.  You can even gather eggs from our free-range hens for your breakfast.
The river is a five-minute walk from the cabin or a short drive down through the pasture.  Bring your fishing poles and wet a hook.
Guest snagged large carp
  Bring Your Fur-Baby With You!
All well-behaved and non-aggressive dogs are welcome at Scurlock Farms.  We have two farm dogs, Jack and Jill.  Other guests at the farm may also bring their pets and we need everyone to get along.  Dogs love exploring the farm and swimming in the river as much as their owners do!  They especially enjoy running off-leash, something some dogs have never been able to do before.  There are furniture covers in the cabin to put on any furniture your pet might like to relax on.
Jack, Great Pyrenees and Jill, Italian Sheepdog
Cleanliness is Next to Godliness in These Times
I understand that people are more concerned with cleanliness now more than ever!  Connie is my housekeeper and she has always started at the top of the ceiling fans and cleaned her way to the floor.  So many of the hundreds of reviews I have received have mentioned how clean the cabin has been.
In the current climate, we are doing even more towards keeping ourselves and our guests safe.  Everything is cleaned, then disinfected.  The final step we take is to sanitize all frequently touched areas and items - doorknobs, light switches, handles, faucets, etc.  We are also leaving a 48 to 72 window between bookings to give the cabin time to air out before Connie cleans it from top to bottom to get it ready for the next guests.
  Kayak Anyone?
Every summer, except when we are on a drought situation, many kayakers kayak past Scurlock Farms.  Many of our guests have rented kayaks and enjoyed kayaking on Lake Georgetown.  If you are interested in doing this, check out San Gabriel Paddle Sports.  They will meet you at a prearranged location on the lake with the kayaks, life jackets, and a cooler that can be a dry box and/or childrens' seat.
Kayak rentals from San Gabriel Paddle Sports
Some guests want to do nothing but stay on the farm and away from everyone, while enjoying the hammock, listening to the bird songs and spotting the Great Horned Owl that visits most evenings, hiking to the river, or just reading a book while staying safe.
Other guests want to get out and see some of the sites while socially distancing and wearing their masks.  Whatever you are looking for, the cabin at Scurlock Farms will make a great staycation for you!

Famous Cozumel Snacks
Tumblr media
Something that is never missing in the constant coming and going in the world of a Mexican is the food stalls in the street. If you visit Cozumel and choose to feel like a resident, I encourage you to leave your vacation rental and browse the streets of downtown Cozumel to investigate some of these delights.
Marquesitas
Originating in the Yucatan, they make marquesitas from the same dough needed to make ice-cream wafers and their filling is sweet: caramel, strawberry jam, dulce de leche, Nutella, honey or Cream cheese with blackberry. The ingredient that is most used is the Mexican ball cheese. They serve them fresh by distributing the batter over the skillet, the same way crepes are prepared, and then roll it up like a taquito. The best place to encounter Marquesitas stands is in the main park in downtown Cozumel.
Esquites and Elotes
Corn has been present in Mexican gastronomy for centuries, so it is consumed in the most diverse and appetizing forms. If you wander the streets you will meet gentlemen with their carts. On these carts are huge steamers full of esquites or elotes. Steamed, the elote is prepared on a stick and dressed in lime, mayonnaise, and then sprinkled with cheese and chile powered. The esquites are made only with corn kernels that are served in a cup with the same ingredients as the elotes. They are super healthy, nutritious, and flavorful. You can locate them along Melgar in downtown Cozumel and in the main park.
Chamoyadas
This famous snack is something extreme, I suggest it for individuals with a bittersweet palate since its ingredients are both spicy and salty. They blend the base ice with the fruit of your preference: mango, lemon, tamarind, or many others. They then add chamoy. Chamoy is a sauce made of dehydrated fruits with chile. They finish the chamoyada off according to the taste of the client; You can put a tamarind stick or sweet gummy candies to get that bittersweet flavor. Once again, these delights will be found at the place where Cozumelenos gather to take a walk (the main downtown park).
Besides the beauty of Cozumel’s beaches, reefs, and nightlife, this tourist destination of natural excellence includes gastronomy that forces you to fall in love with Mexican cuisine. Are you ready? Make your Stingray Villa reservation, here.

Great Getaway for Groups on Cozumel
Tumblr media
It’s practically inevitable. Traveling with a group of friends, even your dearest ones, can be imposing. And we’re not talking about the coordination of organizing multiple flights or jamming all your baggage into one compact car. Finding a great getaway for groups on Cozumel can be a hard step since every group seems to have one friend who can make organizing a little more of an inconvenience. You recognize that friend, the one who has to visit somewhere that’s popular and filled with picturesque photo ops. Or the friend who neglected to renew his passport in time for the international trip you had debated. Or maybe you’re the tough one. Everybody recognizes that places like Venice and Paris are great destinations for couples and that Washington D.C. and Rome are perfect trips for families, but where in the world should you vacation with your BFFs? People ask that specific question now more than ever on Pinterest, where the research for “group travel” is up 367% from last year.  Regardless of the challenge that occurs with struggling to satisfy multiple personalities, you need to travel somewhere that everyone will appreciate, even the most-hard-to-please of the bunch.

Farm Stands and Markets on Whidbey
Many of our neighbors on Whidbey Island are farmers. Nothing is finer than stopping by their farm to get the freshest produce for your island stay!
Whidbey Island is home to many kinds of farms from the reddest strawberries to award winning sheeps milk cheese to golden honey. Here are our tips to find your way to all of them.
When you plan your trip to Whidbey Island, a good place to start is with Whidbey Island Grown. This cooperative has links to all the farmers markets and farm stands in their island wide co-op. In a time of physical distancing you can even plan ahead and shop online to pick up your local produce, as you can see below in a portion of their menu for July.
In Freeland, I highly recommend you stop by Mutiny Bay Blues with the most perfectly delicious blueberries in mid to late July. Their blueberries are the star of Mutiny Bay Distillerie's Blueberry liquor —another great local shop to visit nearby. You can also find their berries at our neighborhood Payless Grocery store.
Nearby Orchard Kitchen is a fabulous restaurant that is a must visit, but did you know it also has a great farm stand? Check out their take out meals too.
I have fond memories of enjoying the crispiest lettuce fresh from the Foxtail Farm stand. They are open in the summer season during daylight hours and at the Bayview Farmers Market on Saturday.
Bayview Farmers Market is a seasonal Saturday experience from 10-2. Look for the white tents from the highway at Bayview Corner—you can't miss it. Now offering pre-order online for curbside pick-up.
Follow their Instagram to see the amazing abundance of Whidbey Island.
Take a journey down a long and winding drive—through the woods—and you will arrive at Glendale Shepherd, in Clinton, a sheep farm with an ocean view. You can visit their farm store on Saturdays and Sundays and purchase their award winning cheese for your picnic. You can also find them at the Bayview Farmers Market. The sheeps milk yogurt is amazing with island berries and honey, and the little sheep soaps make a great island gift. You may even get to see their piglets during your visit.
One last favorite of mine is Bells Strawberry Farm up in Coupeville. It is a delight to visit the year-round farm stand, and meet the donkeys and the sheep. Their strawberries are delicious, so plan your visit at the end of June to celebrate Strawberry Daze on the farm.
Maybe in another post I can share more farm stands with you, but I encourage you to take a slow day on Whidbey, and explore the farms for yourself. The treasures await you. Enjoy!

The Best Day Trips from Cozumel
Tumblr media
When organizing your holiday to Cozumel, keep in mind the alternative vacation destinations that envelop it. Carve out some space in your schedule to give a few days to exploring beyond Cozumel’s reefs. From theme parks to cenotes, there’s a day trip for all tastes. Take a gander at the succeeding list of the finest day trips you can select from Cozumel.
Cancun
This is a day trip you just can’t miss. Cancun is the landmark of the Riviera Maya and a prerequisite when visiting Cozumel. Take a bus from the terminal on 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen and you’ll be there in 40 minutes. In Cancun, make your approach to Playa Delfines beach to shoot a selfie, and then consume a refreshing pina colada on the waterfront or promenade. There’s so much to do: pick a boat cruise through the mangroves of the Nichupte lagoon, experience the downtown, and have lunch in a market to absorb the local customs. In the afternoon enjoy an amazing view of Cancun from the sky in the Scenic Tower at El Embarcadero. Visit the Island Mall for a supper at the bank of the Nichupte lagoon. At night try to hit the bars along Kukulcan Avenue.
Theme Parks
Make some space on the schedule for a complete day at one of the theme parks near Cozumel. There’s an extensive selection of alternatives from natural aquariums to zoos and jungle experiences. Xel Ha and Xcaret are excellent options for swimming in rivers, sinkholes, and beaches. Xplor and Selvática offer thrilling adventures in the Mayan jungle. If you immerse yourself in natural scenery, Xenotes Park is a magnificent spot. As a versatile destination, even zoos have places where you can swim. If that resonates like something you might appreciate, try Bel Air Animal Park. For the few rainy days you may encounter, Xenses is the place to go.
Tulum
This is another must-visit place during your holidays on Cozumel. Tulum, a prominent merchant harbor and worship center, is on the shores of a beautiful beach. You’ll love the encounter with the Mayan culture while enjoying the crisp breeze of the sea. Admire the rock paintings, study the temples, and pause for a minute to appreciate the breathtaking view. When you visit Tulum, take a picnic box, grab two towels, suntan lotion, and get ready for a beach day beneath the archaeological area. Paradise, as it’s announced, illustrates what you’ll discover in the clean crystal waters of this city.
Cenotes and Underground Rivers
There are over 2,500 cenotes in Mexico’s Yucatan. Close to Cozumel, you’ll encounter both underground and open-air cenotes where you can swim, snorkel, and dive. Though they’re in the jungle, they’re safe places that include zip lines and even rappelling. Some of them also include facilities. The cenotes closer to Cozumel are Cenote Azul and Dos Ojos. The underground river, Río Secreto, is an exceptional experience where you must descend 25 km in caves to see to the secret amazing river.
Coba Mayan villages
The tours to the archaeological site Coba allow for a closer understanding of Mayan culture. You can visit the archaeological site on a guided tour and see the trail to a Mayan village, where they offer Mayan gastronomy, theatrical presentations, and a professional workshop. And if you want adventure, select to do some rappelling or swim in a cenote.
Isla Holbox
Holbox is a serene island only 42 km long and 2 km wide. Because of its obscure location, limited groups of tourists visit it. This scarcity of tourism presents a tranquil atmosphere. To relate with the environment and de-stress, this is the day trip for you. Holbox is home to flamingos, pelicans, and other unusual birds. If you go by yourself, choose a bus to Chiquila and then take the ferry. What type of activities can you expect? There’s an island called Isla Pajaros, which is a bird refuge, 30 min. by boat. Visit the sinkhole Yalahau and continue downtown to dine. You still need to go through the workshops of the mandolin and the hammock factory. End your day with a delectable drink, chilling out on the sandy shore under the Caribbean sunlight.
If you find this all amazing we can help you organize all this here at Stingray Villa.

Sedona Hiking Fay Canyon Trail
Tumblr media
Fay Canyon is a great trail for the whole family. Unlike many trails that require you to go “down, across and up” numerous arroyos (dry creeks), Fay Canyon is actually relatively flat. It is one of those trails that starts out good and keeps getter better that further you make your way back into this box canyon. The high red rock cliff walls coupled with the large oak and juniper trees make this a great trail year-round.
Fay Canyon is a favorite hike for many who prefer a shorter hike with minimal elevation gain or who enjoy the grandeur of red sandstone walls towering overhead. Some people visit Fay Canyon to see the natural arch located just under a half mile up the trail. Those who don't know about it usually walk right past. Though the Fay Canyon Arch is by no means small, it looks so much like an ordinary rock overhang, it's easy to glance right at it and not realize what you've seen. If you keep watching the rock wall to the north (right) side of the trail sooner or later you'll spot it.
This small, hidden canyon supports a diverse community of desert plants and provides good views of the surrounding cliffs. It dead ends at a red Supai sandstone cliff. Throughout Fay Canyon you can marvel at the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you.

New Post has been published on https://vacationsoup.com/the-actual-truth-is-cozumel-safe/
The Actual TRUTH - Is Cozumel Safe?
Tumblr media
It’s only reasonable that you demand to be aware of the threats and risks when traveling to an unknown place. The news media does not paint an actual picture of Cozumel. I will not start saying "fake news" but let us show you the data!
Is it safe to travel to Cozumel?
Thousands of people visit sunny Cozumel each year and return home from a trouble-free trip. With a dose of common sense and some inside intel, you can too! I will examine everything you need to recognize. Despite the media headlines painting Mexico as a place rampant with corruption and drug disorder, my experience has been different. By choosing the same basic safeguards as you would travel anywhere (including metropolitan cities in the US), Cozumel is safe for you and your household. The Mexican government will not let millions of dollars slip through their network because the most prominent spots aren’t secure.
Street Safety
To be safe anywhere in the world, you must apply your common sense, be attentive to your surroundings, don’t wander down dark unlit streets alone, and place your treasures out of sight. You wouldn’t spot me strolling down a dark alley in Saint Louis MO, alone at night. Again, apply common sense. Street safety is an essential subject to cover if you enjoy exploring on foot. Compared to other places I’ve visited, Cozumel is nowhere near as high risk with street safety. That said, just always be mindful of what’s going on around you and act accordingly.
Scams in Mexico
Scams are a world-wide issue. I’ve had credit card fraud in the United States on more occasions than anywhere else in the world. Here are the scams to look out for in Cozumel:
CASH MACHINES - This one is at the top of my list and by far the most prevalent. It’s never happened to me, but some tourists have fallen to this scam. Do not utilize random cash machines on the boulevard. Although they are accessible, they aren’t protected and observed by officials. Use cash machines at a bank to be extra secure. In Cozumel, there is no scarcity of banks to choose from, just be certain to notify your branch before leaving your home country so the card isn’t rejected or blocked.
TAXIS - Many people worry about getting into taxis in an unfamiliar country. Once you learn the ins and outs of how taxis work in Cozumel your fears will be alleviated. Always agree on a cost before you get in the taxi this way both you and the driver are clear on how much it will cost before the trip commences. Most residents aren’t out to defraud you, but with a little care and being aware of who is around you will be secure.
CURRENCY EXCHANGE - If you will bring cash along with you, just do your homework before you get here. Research the strongest exchange rates before you go to evade being ripped off. Many places accept USD, but if you go in a taxi or shopping in Cozumel, it’s suggested that you utilize the local currency (Mexican Pesos).
Is drinking alcohol in Mexico safe
A few years ago the US State Department warned travelers about possible tainted alcohol in Mexico, because a girl found deceased in a pool at a resort after a night of drinking. We’ve dealt with a lot of guests wondering how safe it is to indulge in their vacation margaritas. It’s justifiable to be concerned. Rule number one, drink responsibly! You should not avoid consuming alcohol in Mexico, but you should be cautious. As you will stay with us, pick a beach club with a great drinks selection boasting brands that you know and trust. I’ve encountered nothing evil but here are 9 top tips to remain safe on a night out:
Insist on observing your drinks being made
Consider bottled or canned drinks
Buy your alcohol at a liquor store
Never leave your drink unattended
Don’t drink in the sun
Drink enough water in between drinks
Observe your surroundings
If you feel ill seek medical attention
Take out travel insurance
Drugs and Cartels
Mexico has a position for drug-related cases. None of us are alien to drug culture, specifically if you live in a big city. It’s just part of life. It’s an issue, but it appears everywhere. Whether you choose to call it gangs or cartels, it’s all the same. You don’t want to get tied up with these sketchy people. Avoid them at all costs and you will be fine. Back home if someone ran up to you on the highway and offered drugs you would say no. The same applies here.
Transportation Crime
Mexico is an amazing place where you can travel almost anywhere in the country via bus. It’s society’s main transport service. The ADO service is the finest one to use. The site is super simple to work and you can book your tickets in advance. There is a problem that has been going on now for some time. Do not use the overhead bin for your backpacks, purses, or luggage. At a stop, someone may “accidentally” take your bag from the overhead bin and others will not allow you to go forward by standing in your way. Keep your belongings by your feet while seated. It is a little uncomfortable, but you will prevent your bags from growing legs.
Night Safety
From sundown to sunrise it’s essential to look after yourself. If you are out with your companions or family just watch out for each other the same as you would at home. If you’re headed back to your hotel in a taxi try to do so in groups or at least pairs just in case one of you has had too much alcohol and requires a little extra support. Be mindful of your surroundings, keep your eyes peeled, and be sure to mention anything questionable. Don’t wander off alone at night and always go in well-lit areas.
LGBT Safety
It will please you to recognize that Cozumel is very LGBTQ friendly. Cozumel has developed into a sanctuary for gay couples who choose to get married and require an ultimate wedding destination.
Natural Hazards
Nature is a force in the Caribbean. Things have been quiet on Cozumel for over a decade with no major hurricanes in the state. After previous catastrophes, the island is now fully prepared to handle natural disasters and possesses the best hurricane shelters and state-of-the-art hospitals.
Travel Health
Because of Cozumel has a tropical climate mosquito-borne infections such as dengue fever and chikungunya are a risk. Speak to your doctor well in advance to prepare and have the correct precautions before your trip. Avoid getting bitten altogether by bringing bug spray with you. Cozumel can become hot, so preserve your skin with sunscreen. Try to use biodegradable bug spray and sunscreen as it undermines the coral reef systems when you go in the sea, plus it’s better for your body. Drink bottled water and make sure you drink plenty of it to stay hydrated in the heat.

Surprise Fishing Adventure in New Smyrna Beach Florida
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everytime we travel to New Smyrna Beach, there is a new adventure. This July, we had a surprise fishing adventure in New Smyrna Beach.
We're snowbirds, so we don't often travel to New Smyrna Beach in the summer. But last week, we hopped on Interstate 95 from Virginia to Florida, and hit the fishing jackpot totally by accident! We arrived there to find that Red Snapper season was underway on Florida's Atlantic coast.
Impressed? This didn't impress me too much either at first, until I experienced it.
No beer the night before fishing trip
My husband was beyond excited to be invited to go red snapper fishing out in the ocean. I am not sure he slept the night before. He didn't even drink one beer the night beforehand so he would be hydrated and ready for a whole day of fishing. I was duly impressed, but still not excited yet.

We were told to meet our friend and the boat at 0530 am at the Port Orange boat ramp, 15 minutes away. Yes 0530. He said "If we don't get there by then, there won't be any parking places left for the truck/trailer. What? 0530? As it turned out, even Black Friday shopping center parking lots aren't this full at 0530
The adventure began when we arrived at 0515 am. In the dark. There was a line of 7 trucks with their trailers lined up to drop their boats in the water in one of two side by side concrete ramps. I thought at first, "Oh no, this is going to take all day..." . By the time I walked up to the ramp to check it out and back to our vehicle to gather our gear, about 300 feet each way, those 7 boats had all been put in the water with mind-boggling precision. Strangers in the dark, all working in perfect unison, like seasoned NASCAR "pit crews" - getting the boats' lights on and loose, pulling up and backing down the ramp in almost one seamless motion, dropping the boat off the trailer into the water, and taking off. One little bobble or trouble with backing those trailers, and the whole operation would have ground to a chaotic halt. Calm, businesslike, teamwork. No playing around.Impressive.

The line of trucks with their trailers/boats kept moving and refilling. The huge parking lot - bigger than a large Walmart parking lot - was full by 0545. After our friend and his boat took off with my husband, I sat there on a picnic table, in the dark, with strangers, watching the action as boat after boat was unloaded. I should have timed them or counted them! I was so amazed and entertained. I asked this one guy and his 3 friends who were waiting on their boat, why on earth there were so many fishermen there before the crack of dawn? He said red snapper season consisted of only 4 days this year on the Atlantic coast of Florida - and this was the last day. A Friday morning where employers up and down the Florida Atlantic coast must have shut down their businesses for the day. Reminded me of deer hunting season in Virginia, where many businesses close for 1-2 weeks each November.

Fun on the boat
The next treat was hearing about all the adventures out on the water. Most importantly they caught their limit - one red snapper per person. These fish were 10-20 lbs so they easily filled their large coolers. They also caught a large sheephead and a cobia. They cut loose a moray eel and an angelfish shark that looked to be about 6 feet or more long, and caught crab and used them for bait. Who knew crab swim about 30 minutes from shore? They saw lots of dolphin up close and personal as well as jellyfish, a sea tortoise, and a stingray. They swam in the ocean water to cool off. I learned that females shouldn't swim with dolphin because the male dolphin will get too sexually aggressive. I learned that deep water fish have "bladders" that help them dive or surface. I am becoming something of an expert! Well, no but sounds good.

I also learned that red snapper is really good eating! Our friend filleted up everyones' fish expertly with sharp- as -razor- blade knives. The next evening we feasted on it! Red snapper has the consistency of chicken breast, lean and moist, slightly sweet, and is very flavorful. I have been totally ruined by my friend's fresh deep fried fish, homemade seasoned breading, and secret tartar sauce handed down from generations. Nothing in a restaurant comes close.
Red Snapper
Red Snapper 101
Red snapper is one of the most popular of all white fish.
Red snapper is generally found at 30 to 620 feet deep in the Gulf of Mexico and along the eastern coasts of North America, Central America, and northern South America. It is rare to find red snapper north of the Carolinas. Red snappers can grow as large as 35 pounds, but most fish are much smaller. It is often sold whole or in fillets. Whole fish are usually between 2 and 5 pounds.
Red snapper have been protected from harvest in federal waters of the Atlantic since 2010. Recreational anglers have had only 39 days over 10 years to keep them because fishery managers have said the stocks aren't strong enough to support more.
Red snapper feed on fish, shrimp, crab, worms, cephalopods (octopus or squid), and some plankton (tiny floating plants and animals). Young red snapper are food for the large carnivorous fish that share their habitat, such as jacks, groupers, sharks, barracudas, and morays.

KEEP SAFE - Tips for Keeping Safe From Germs At Walt Disney World
With the reopening to visitors of Walt Disney World Resort, the four theme paerks are just waiting for you to rediscover them. How ever there are changes to the rides, with new safety measures designed to protect you and minimise the spread of germs including sanitation measures. There are also lots of other ways you can keep your loved ones safe  after all you don’t want to put yourself at risk but you do want to experience the magic a little more worry free. Hakuna Matata!
picture of timon and puma
Be Prepared
Before you go, keep up to date with all things Disney World - this is vital. Safety measures to be aware of include temperature screening at entry points and mandatory wearing of face covering. All guests ages 2 years and up must wear face coverings at all times except when dining and swimming. The masks should be of at least 2 layers of breathable fabric, fully cover the nose and mouth and not be open at the chin and must be secured by ties or ear loops. Neck gaiters are not allowedAs well as a valid admission ticket,  you now have to make a reservation in advance to enter the parks. Do this using the Disney Park Pass  Reservation System.  It really does help to keep up to date before you go and you won’t feel as if you are entering the unknown
Dont Touch Your Face or Mouth
Touching your mouth or face is a reflex action which comes as second nature if you’ve an itch, or making sure there isn’t any remnant of a delicious snack by licking your fingers.Unfortunately this is also one of the most effective ways of catching germs, so remember oneof the most effective ways of avoiding catching a germ is to reduce or eliminate  the number of times you touch your face. Think of your hand as a transport system to your mouth.
Use the Hand Sanitising Stations
The elimination of germs at their source should be the first line of attack. SO make the most of  the hand sanitising stations in the queueing areas and in fact throughout the parks . Don’t go overboard, just make sure you sanitise thoroughly after touching any thing - and make sure everyone your party does so also. It helps to carry your own sanitiser with you
Remember to Social Distance
Social distancing is the rule throughout Walt Disney World Resort. The measures are still in place but, there will always be people who forget, or  people who might not be paying as much attention to the guidelines as they should be. Remember if its possible to keep your distance from others ( although this isn’t always easy to do while in line). And  while it’s virtually  impossible in certain areas, do try to keep your group as close together as possible
Wash your Hands Before and  After Eating
Obviously, face coverings can be removed while you’re eating and drinking. You’re likely be going on more rides afterwards, so be sure to be careful  whenever you do eat or drink. Always wash your hands before and after – especially if you’re eating foods like burgers or anything else you might touch directly with your hands (delicious cotton candy being one of the riskiest culprits!). You no longer are permitted to eat  or drink on the go , you must be stationary.
If its Not Yours Don’t Touch It!!
you see someone else’s  property that  they’ve dropped getting on off a ride and you want to be sure it gets to its rightful owner. Instead of picking it up inform a Cast Member. Also please don’t touch any contact points  like walls , ropes, handles etc when in line - just don’t give those pesky germs a chance
Follow All Posted Instructions
Posted instructions are  dotted throughout the entire resort, including the queuing systems. They will probably cover everything covered in this article, but, be sure to keep a lookout for them anyway. Now  several months into the CoVid crisis, it’s still all too easy to forget to do certain things at times. Keep reminding your loved ones’ attention to these instructions. In fact, one of the most effective things you can do to keep your family safe is to keep them all in check!
Some rides may have limited availability, and others may even be closed. If so try  not to be too disappointed. I know it’s easier said than done, of course, but these are unprecedented times and Walt Disney World Resort wants nothing more than for all its guests to have a safe and magical experience.
