so im gonna be dming a pathfinder 2e group soon and i thought it would be fun to write a short introduction for every characters which justifies where they start and why they are there, while keeping their backstories intact.
hopefully they will like it lol starting with... zombie guts! yay!
@the-faramir i did the thing!
It was like a dreamless sleep. You awake in the darkness, of heavy body and dazed mind. You try to move, but there is no room, you are not in your bed, but in what appears to be a wooden container. Your mind rejects the obvious, words would make it real, so you panic and pound the lid directly above you with all your might as a stream of disjointed images flood you. You remember a teasing smile, a “know-it-all”, and the screams. Digging your way out with your bare hands, swallowing tears and dirt until you finally see light, there is a faint hope that you will wake up once you reach the surface. But a moment after, you are freed from the coffin, but not from terror.
The cemetery you find yourself in is empty and does not seem familiar. The survivor in you knows you have to move and seek aid, but staying upright, flexing a knee or closing your fist entail conscious and arduous work. You blame your previous comatose state, after all, how long had you been kept down there? Then, you blame your armor, cumbersome even on the best of days. You blame the cold, running as deep as the very marrow of your bones, unlike anything you have ever felt before, and clearly inappropriate for the season outside. You furiously look for culprits until you are left alone with the fact that you are dead.
Perhaps what feels worse than being the recipient of a poor necromantic ritual is that your gravestone doesn’t even have a name. Whoever buried you went through all the trouble of a proper Iomedaean burial, but skipped over the most basic step. As if you were meant to be forgotten, but not disrespected. But you do not need a gravestone to remember your name, Faraam.
After what could be hours or minutes, you compose yourself enough to get up and try to simulate a natural gait. The incessant clank of your armor breaks the silence of the night as you wander, unsure. Know-It-All. It must have meant something to someone, once. You spook what seems to be a drunk farmhand on a night stroll and realize that, perhaps, the first step of finding Know-It-All is to groom yourself enough not to be chased away from civilized society with pitchforks and torches. You deem that the local inn will do the trick, but the owner laughs at you, at how dirty your armor is, at how men-at-arms aren’t worth shite nowadays, at how back in the Fifth Mendevian Crusade even the sleaziest bandits understood dignity.
“Friend, if that’s how you show yourself -he adds, voice filled with mockery and judgement- I don’t even want to think how the man under the armor looks!”
Neither do you.

sometimes I think about that guy on amazon who reviewed pride and prejudice and did an entire angry, weirdly math focused rant about how awful darcy is and then ends it all with "I could carve a better man out of a banana"

It’s kinda funny that Jason is, in every sense of the word, the most normal Robin. Unironically, there wasn’t anything uniquely special about him before he was Robin. He was a street kid. His dad was a goon (which makes sense for Gotham. It’s a goon breeding ground) and his adoptive mom was a girl who fell in love with the bad boy, got disowned by her upper middle class parents and adopted her boyfriend’s infant son. Even his biological mother isn’t anything special! She was just a doctor who ended up becoming corrupt.
Jason Todd was no circus kid who could do an impossible signature trick. He wasn’t being scouted by some evil hidden organization.
He wasn’t the rich boy genius who lived next door.
He’s not the son of a supervillain (as lame as cluemaster is, he still *counts*).
He’s not the secret son of Bruce Wayne.
And he’s not a metahuman, nor did he led a whole organization of teens to fight when Batman couldn’t.
He’s the most regular boy to ever enter become a hero in Gotham. He wanted to do good things for the sake of doing good. He grew up poor with regular parents, where bad things happened to them. The kinds of things that could happen to *any* person living in Gotham.
There is nothing about him, pre-Robin and as Robin, that makes him Not Like Regular Kids.
His dad was a goon (who, depending on the run, was either killed by Two-Face OR. Just sent to prison and killed in prison! Which makes his backstory even PLAINER-) and his mother was a drug addict with cancer. Jason ends up homeless, and almost steals the bat mobile tires. The only thing that makes him stand out from any other tragedy befallen kid in Gotham is the fact he was bold enough to do that, get Batman’s attention, and continue to be bold enough to go against a crime lord (who was apparently his grandmother, the most interesting person in his family, but since she’s almost never brought up, she’s likely no more significant than a one-issue villain in the crime lord power hierarchy). Batman realized that Jason wasn’t going to really stop, and honestly he kinda grew on him, so he decided to adopt Jason, and eventually allow him to become Robin.
There just isn’t anything amazingly special about his backstory. The few moments where something could have been done to make it more interesting (like his biological mother) but ended up taking the most boring option. You can’t do much of anything now to enhance his past without upsetting much more well established canon, and not without making people wonder “well if his grandmother was such a big name in crime, why hasn’t she been brought up before?”
Jason Todd was a wonderful Robin (providing that he actually has a writer who likes him). He has a golden heart, he’s the voice of reason. He’s everything that a Robin needs to be for Batman. But compared to everyone else, he was nothing special. In a way, his lack of Not Like Regular Kids makes him stand out in a much more subtle way.
As if someone asked the question “Do I need to be someone special to be Robin?” And the answer was “You don’t need to be someone special, you just need to be brave, like Jason Todd was.”

personally I hope that Mentopolis ends with the Fix and Pasha spending all of their time at the library together where they annoy the other patrons by ignoring the books in favor of reciting fun facts in incongruously sensual tones while holding intense eye contact and then eventually adopting Conrad, who spends library outings reminding people not to talk too loudly or damage the books, as their beloved son

obviously the fact that pib is a trickster spirit is great and i loved his whole coming back from the dead thing but it would have been hilarious if brennan had gone through everyone with their long explanations for how they came back and then when zac sat down he just went
"You have Eight Lives Left. Could you please call everyone back? :)"

it’s way more fun to me to think of the rat grinders as a different dnd table rather than a real life friend group. like don’t get me wrong it’s still a nightmare table we’d hear about on d&d court but shit like rueben voting to change the name just to upset kipperlilly? oh you cannot tell me it’s not so fun to razz your friend’s pc for the sole purpose of being a bitch

Jesper: Anyone else still traumatised from doing maths homework at the kitchen table with their parents?
Jesper: My Da flicked me on the forehead once cause he was so frustrated. He is the least violent person I know but he was sooo mad at me
