Commenting 101
Lesson 3: Quote. Or paraphrase
Sorry about going MIA last weekend, but I'm back with Lesson 3 💪 But before we get into it, how are we doing with describing the indescribable and commenting in general?
Alright. So let's talk about quoting bits of the fics and commenting on them in a comment. Personally, it's one of my favourite ways to comment because I find it easier to focus on a specific thing/sentence/paragraph/turn of phrase that I really like and gush about it to an author. By doing this, I can also focus on the bits of the story that I really really liked, and not worry about the parts that I didn't like so much. Win-win for everyone!
The one downside of this particular commenting technique is that it does take a relatively high amount of effort and is not as easy as a keyboard smash or entering a bunch of smileys and a catchphrase into the comment box. But hey. Some fics are worth it :)
So, here are some tips on how to quote while commenting:
Keep 2 tabs open.
Use a third party browser script that gives you a floating review box.
Paraphrase.
1. Keep 2 tabs open
Easier on a computer, but I've done it on mobile before. This is literally having two tabs open to the same chapter/fic as I read. When I get to a sentence or phrase that I really like, I'll copy it from my reading tab and paste it into my second tab which has the comment box open.
Sometimes I'll notate what I am thinking in the moment for that quote, and sometimes I'll leave it for the end and experience all the bits I loved again 😍. My comment at the end usually looks something like this:
"Sentence I really like" ~~ I really love how you described this character!
Everything from "Start of a paragraph/section..." to "...end of paragraph/section" is giving me life!!
"Paragraph I really like" ~~ This was perfection and made me cry 😭
and so on and so forth.
It's nice when I notate as I go, because when I'm done reading, I've got quite the comment already written and I usually just round off the comment with a catchphrase like "This was all wonderful! Thank you for writing and sharing!" and hit post, easy-peasy.
2. Use a third party browser script that gives you a floating review box.
This is not something I personally use, but the people who do have really loved it and I love the concept of it so here it is for you to try and see if it works for you!
There are a couple of scripts:
AO3 Floating Comment Box by ScriptMouse. This is a script to create a floating comment box at the bottom of the page for works on AO3. Box will be closed by default, and can be open/closed using the button in the top left corner of the window. Thanks to @memorizingthedigitsofpi for the link!
AO3 Review + Last Chapter Shortcut + Kudos-sortable Bookmarks Tampermonkey script by @ravenel. Click on the link to take you to the original post describing the tool and here's a follow up tutorial post by @bourbon-ontherocks on how to install the script. Credits to @altschmerzes and @castillon02 for the links!
I think these are only for browser on computers (so no mobile?) but please feel free to correct me in the notes if anyone knows.
3. Paraphrase
Let's be real. While Tips 1 and 2 are really just giving you tools to make commenting easier, when it gets down to it, commenting really requires you to, well, comment on something.
So what to do if you forgot to take notes as you read, didn't feel like doing it as you were reading, or found it just too hard to wrangle on mobile?
Paraphrase.
Just refer back to that one thing that caught your attention ala:
"I really love how you described this character in that part!"
"That part where you wrote about that thing that happened to that character is giving me life!!"
"That part where you that happened was perfection and made me cry 😭"
Yes, this does require you to remember and be able to point out and talk about certain parts of the fic. It can be a lot to remember particularly if it's a long chapter. So, as I've stressed in previous lessons, don't let it paralyze you. Just pick one thing you can remember and have the ability to comment on.
Remember:
Just quoting and commenting on one thing is better than nothing.
When you cannot quote, paraphrase!
And as always, when in doubt, comment your catchphrase.
If you want more help constructing a comment or validation that you're writing good comments, please send in an ask or submit a screenshot!
Lessons masterpost.

In regards to your posts about ao3 and how vile it is in actuality, I wanna say thank you. I've not put much thought into the website I've been using but this has put things into perspective. I no longer want my work (work that I am proud of) on a website like that. Ao3 doesn't align with my values and I'm assuming many other people's who use the site.
Do you have any suggestions on a better site everyone can use?
(Side note: I absolutely adore your work!)
sure thing!
while there are no websites quite like ao3 in terms of filtering, curation, bookmarks, likes/comments etc there are a few alternatives out there!
Wattpad - I know people make fun of this one because it's where all the rpf for bands went back in the day but it is still operating and many people use it so you'll likely just switch viewers from ao3 to wattpad pretty seamlessly
Tumblr - you can always post directly on here! there is a character limit i believe of 4k so it's great for showing previews or even cutting up a small fic into parts 1, 2, 3, etc. a little clunky but it's an option if you only write short stuff! (Twitter threads can even be an option for this though again, a lil restrictive and works better for super short works!)
Google Docs + Linktree - if you have a linktree account you can always just link a view only (make sure people can't edit!) google doc of the fic! having the fics on a linktree still give people the ability to see all of your work in one place, and you can even see on linktree the click statistics for each fic! while it doesn't give the reader the ability to like/comment, you can always encourage those who do like it to leave a message on your tumblr!
Discord (or any groupchat tbh!) - similar to above you can always set up a discord server and post your fics view docs links there! it gives a curated experience and you can see the comments of people directly in the server
AO3 has seemingly made people believe that each and everyone one of their fan creations must be thrown out into the void where you hope everyone sees it and loves it. I think this has really stifled people's abilities to truly be creative in terms of making content of their favourite medias (and even with transitioning to making original work!) because you may subconsciously be adhering the current trends and whatnot of everyone else, even if you don't really like it yourself! I mean look at how common modern/high school aus still are today when I have yet to meet anyone who actually likes them. Look at how many books that have been published lately that painfully follow AO3 tag systems, where they don't even havea blurb anymore and instead just have "friends to lovers meet blah blah blah! read it now!". (Not to mention the quality of the books being published is fucking atrocious)
AO3 has ruined publishing and I am being entirely serious about that.
But back to where you wanna go with your fics now. Don't be afraid to restructure how you interact with your hobbies! It doesn't have to be so exposed and vulnerable to anyone and everyone having their say on it. I used to participate massively in fandom and I'll be honest, it made me miserable. I constantly felt like I couldn't keep up, that my ideas were wrong because another idea was more popular, and I really struggled. So I took about a hundred steps back and only interact with the media I like through my friends who also like it! And it's a lot better! You may not get hundreds and thousands of likes on fics from here on out if that's what you're used to, but I guarantee you'll have more meaningful interactions that you actually hold dear to you far more than any "a guest has left a kudos on your work" notification.
(Also just a pre-emptive thing of anyone who wants to defend AO3 on this post because "it's an integral part of fandom!" or "they need that much money because they run a site with no ads!", or you want to try and tell me that the fics on there are fine because it's fiction regardless of what the fics is (including literal fucking CSAM), just know you are completely unserious and I don't value a single thing you say. So don't even try it. How about you donate to a marginalised person's mutual aid for the first time in your life and you'll calm down.)

Hi! I’ve been following your Steve fics for a while and just wanted to say I really really love everything you’ve written, especially the Alternatively series.
Idk if you give writing advice and sorry if this comes out of the blue, but do you ever struggle comparing yourself to other writers on Ao3? I’ve been posting on and off lately but get so discouraged when I see fics with hundreds of thousands of hits and thousands of kudos and comments. I just don’t feel like I’ll ever compete with that, you know?
Hello! Thank you for your kind words! It always lifts me up to hear things like that :D
I've been thinking about this ask a lot to think of how I handle that feeling. Because it might surprise you considering how many people read my fics, but I also feel discouraged sometimes when fics don't get the engagement I'd love sometimes.
Here's some things I've done to help myself:
First, I added a skin to my AO3 to turn off numbers on fics. This blocks comment numbers, hit counts, kudos, that sort of thing. @ao3commentoftheday has good tutorials for ao3 skins. I made a google docs with the coding for the skins I use if you're interested.
I find hiding the numbers really helps me, because I found I was beginning to focus a lot on the numbers of my fics. These skins block the numbers on your fics and other people's. Doing this helps me not fixate on the numbers and take more happiness in the fics themselves.
When I first changed my ao3 skin I didn't turn it off for several weeks, to wean myself off of it, but now I turn it off on Sundays and give myself the day to enjoy looking at the bookmark numbers and stuff like that, because now it sparks joy more than discouragement, which is the goal.
Second, I try to treasure the good stuff. When creating things I find it very very important to remind yourself of the good things. Our brains are kind of wired to forget the positive reception we've gotten for things and we keep chasing more, which can leave us discouraged.
So find ways to treasure whatever happy things you've gotten from your fics or fandom experience online.
For example, I have a personal discord serve with just me where I save screenshots of amazing comments, touching notes, tags, bookmarks, asks etc that people have left on my fics and posts. This way I can go back and look at them anytime.
I also save my favourite comments in my ao3 inbox instead of deleting them.
And I've also started a scrapbook with my favourite comments so I can hopefully really remember them and imprint them into my brain.
Train yourself to truly appreciate the interactions you get. That's a whole person there! And that's pretty amazing.
Third, often what fandom people are truly looking for is community. That's why we want people to comment on our fics and art because we want to share this amazing idea we had and we want to talk about this thing we love!
So find a community that will listen to you. On tumblr or on discord or with a mutual. Find people who will be excited when you share a headcanon with them or a meme or an in depth analysis of a character.
I find that helps me feel appreciated and excited for what I'm working on and that really really helps.
Fourth, Don't compare your fics to someone's fics that have been posted for a year of more!! This is really easy to do, I do it with my own fics all the time.
But we forget that numbers accumulate over time! Of course your new fic doesn't have as many hits or kudos or whatever as a fic you posted three years ago!
Comparing the two is like getting to the party, putting your cake down and feeling bad because no one's taken a bite, while Brenda's cake, which has been here for two hours is mostly crumbs. These things take time sometimes!
Anyways, I hope this helps. Thanks for the ask!

Get to know the fic writer asks!
1. Do you prefer writing one-shots or multi-chaptered fics?
2. Do you plan each chapter ahead or write as you go?
9. Do you comment on stories you read?
11. Link your three favorite fics right now (can be yours or someone else’s).
12. how does receiving or not receiving feedback/support impact you?
25. What fic do you wish you got more of a response on?
26. Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?
And, free choice! If you want to do an extra one.
Thank you very much for the asks!
1. Do you prefer writing one-shots or multi-chaptered fics?
I prefer one-shots by a wide margin as I do not have the patience, imagination or self-discipline necessary to write multi-chaps (as evidenced by the vert slow going on the multi-chaps I have going on). It's also nice to just focus on one thing and make the whole fic about just that without worrying about plots or character arcs or other pesky details; how someone sees the summer, hidden fears and joys, the meaning of life.
2. Do you plan each chapter ahead or write as you go?
Pants! Pants! Pants!
I'm a pantser through and through. And as previously stated, I usually write one-shots, not multi-chaps, so I usually just write wherever my inspiration takes me.
9. Do you comment on stories you read?
For the most part! If I'm very, very tired I might not do it (or if the story isn't in my main fandoms) since I feel like I don't find the right words in the soup of my brain. But I do comment on all multi-chaps' chapters I follow when they update, and most of the one-shots I read. Be the change you want to see in the world.
11. Link your three favorite fics right now (can be yours or someone else’s).
Losing Time (You Can't Go Home Again) by @hyperbolicreverie which is just full of heart-breaking catharsis and time-travelling schenanigans.
trouble is a friend of mine by taizi where Sanji finds some new friends in the most unlikely of places
The Many Marriages of the Straw Hat Pirates by @ladycrimsonandblack where you have all the weddings.
12. how does receiving or not receiving feedback/support impact you?
I write mainly for myself, so whatever I put out there, I am happy with. However, feedback does make a huge impact on my motivation and might fuel the next piece I write. I have fics (and WIPs) that wouldn't exist without an innocent "wouldn't it be fun if…" comment left on my earlier work.
Receiving: You are my favourite person in the world. I will treasure your comment (gushing/constructive criticism/meanderings on what will happen next/whatever) and most probably will print it out and add it to my wall of People Who Keep Me Going. You liked my fic enough to leave kudos? took the time to comment on it? I love you. I love you. I love you.
When a fic doesn't get much engagement… well, depends on the fic. If it's a gen!fic I'm a bit miffed – but I still write these for myself so as long as it's out there, I'm mainly happy with myself (although I do stress like hell for the first week or so after posting and keep updating, looking for those sweet sweet dopamine-fuelling likes). And I know smut is less likely to get comments but when I see those hidden bookmarks, I do get a lovely fuzzy feeling. I see you and your horny ways. I wrote this for you.
25. What fic do you wish you got more of a response on?
I am repeating myself from an earlier ask game, but it's still Where swallows fly (the sky is burning). It's one of my favourite pieces and it was so much fun thinking about Sugar's time with the Family.
And of course, since Statistically Significant is a multi-chap (and I am bad at long-term motivation) and kudos can be left only once, every comment I get on updates fuels the fires for the next chapter…
26. Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?
What an interesting question. On one hand, I have to say Where swallows fly again, since it's such a multi-layered work. On the other hand, the prompt-fics I do (Heart Pirates Week, Kinktober, Writers' Month…) jump around a lot, so you (and I) never know what happens next. Also, Coffee. Black. Please. started as a silly little coffee shop !AU one-shot that developed a life of its own.
And, free choice! If you want to do an extra one.
65. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project
Currently I'm mostly looking forward to writing. I'm stuck in thesis hell (again) for the coming months so I won't have time to focus on fanfic.
But that said, I am very much looking forward to introducing some New Characters when Nami gets to her study exchange in Münich in the next chapter of StatSig. Any guesses as to whom that might be? ;)
Also, I have way too many ideas for fics that get dumped in my WIP-documents (one for each ship/fandom), growing them ever longer. Pls send help.
I'm still accepting (and hoping for) more asks as I try to procrastinate working on my thesis, so anyone reading this; feel very free to ask away!
Asks can be found here.

What’s your favorite watermour fic on ao3? In addition to your works, I love Red but I struggle to read it because of how intense the angst is :,( I usually follow it up with Touch, Stars Above Mountains, Broken Pieces and Black and White.
There was also another cute fic with Rog and Dave spending time inside together while it rains but it seems to have been deleted and I can’t recall the title or author, sadly. I believe it was rated E, but the dynamic was adorable nevertheless!
But anyways, sorry about this long ask! I just had to share, but I want to hear from you since you’re an amazing writer and we are blessed to have you here <3
Hello! Thanks for taking the time to write this message. I love receiving questions.
Of those you mentioned, I've read all except the rainy one. Red and Black and White are especially excellent. In fact, if you look at the comments of any Watermour fic on AO3, there's a good chance you'll find me there. And if I haven't written anything, it's also very possible I've left kudos. I've got many fics that I love, don't know if I could choose a single one or even make an orderly list... but here are some of my favourites:
The one I come back to the most is probably If I Were a Rule, I Would Bend for You. There's something about it, you know? The author creates this calm and laid-back post-gig atmosphere and it feels so natural, like a glimpse into a relationship that's much more complex than it shows.
That One Brick Down is so creative. I love the setting, the idea behind it. I myself tend to write "realistic" stuff, so this work is an exploration, a tread through terrain that's fairly unknown to me, and it's fascinating! Also, the person who wrote it used to comment on my works a few years ago, so seeing their name makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
We're Forever, You and I is, of course, another one of my favourites. It ended up inspiring Echoes of a Distant Time, so I think one can tell just how much I liked it by seeing that it prompted me to write that one-shot.
Giving is so, so sweet. Someone commented that it makes you feel like it's winter, and that's just the most perfect description ever. Roger's characterisation feels so genuine and everything's so loving.
The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking is a work in progress at the time I'm writing this response, but I felt compelled to add it because it's just that good. The writing style, man. Truly one of my favourite authors.
Oh, you made me notice something! I typically use my bookmarks as a list of my favourites, and I've forgotten to add most of these there! Going to do that right now.
Aww, thank you so much. I try my best to share my love for these lads, good to know you're not bothered by me flooding the David Gilmour/Roger Waters tag with my fics, haha. It's nice to see people like my humble contributions.
Thanks again for taking the time to message me! 🥺❤️

Fanfic Tag Game
Thanks for the tag @lokibus! <3 <3 <3
How many works do you have on Ao3?
54. I've written quite a bit more, but I just can't be bothered to carry over most of the fics from my LJ days. Also, once upon a time I had a super insecure streak and I went on an orphaning spree, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What’s your total Ao3 word count?
Apparently 457,241! Kinda same as above.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Though I Try Not To (The Witcher)
I'm so weirdly pleased about this. I fell into Witcher fandom totally by accident. I don't usually do fixit fics, but I couldn't help myself. This is, I think, the only fic to date where I've started posting as a WIP and actually followed through and finished.
Where All Roads Lead (MCU)
If there is one plot device I'm just eternally a sucker for, it's time travel shenanigans. This was one of the two time travely fics I wrote for Stucky fandom.
For The Space of a Heartbeat (The Witcher)
I'm honestly really surprised by this? This was totally just a self indulgent spur of the moment kinda thing, and it's only a couple thousand words.
Even in the Dark I Know You (The Witcher)
Okay, I lied. There were two WIPs I actually followed through and finished. This started as a random oneshot for a whump week thing, and then the prompt for the next day fit so well with a follow up chapter that this just turned into a whole story. I really enjoy subverting tropes and with witcher biology I see a lot of sensory overload kinds of fics, so I decided to play with the idea in reverse.
Even if it Hurts (Even if it Makes Me Bleed) (The Witcher)
So, most of the time when I settle into a fandom, there's one fic idea that I feel like I cannot leave without writing. For Witcher fandom, this was that fic. I have a lot of complicated thoughts about soulmates as a romantic concept, even more so when you're involving characters like Geralt, for whom fate is so often a double edged sword. This story was very much an excuse to dig into what soulmates mean for personal agency under the guise of a narrative. XD
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Admittedly, I do this with embarrassing inconsistency. Basically, what happens is: * Something gets a good response. * I respond to a few comments and then find myself overwhelmed (mentally, not as in there are a truly overwhelming number of comments). * I step away for a bit. * A month later I realize I still haven't replied. Cue paralyzing indecision about whether it's too late to reply. * Rinse and repeat.
I do want to! And I'm working on it. I've gotten a little better about it, but my apologies to anyone who I haven't responded to. Please know I'm not intentionally ignoring you. ;_;
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Oh hmm. I had a reputation for a really long time as primarily an angst writer, but pretty much all my stories have a happy ending for some given quantity of happy. I guess it kind of depends on how one qualifies that.
Noonwraiths and Other Woodland Forest Creatures maybe. It's got a got a pretty fluffy ending.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
It's a tossup.
I, The Paradox, which is my other time travel fic from my Stucky fandom days, with a paradox (shocking) that lands Steve with two versions of Bucky. For plot purposes even! It's not a particularly smutty story. It ends sort of ambiguously. There's a sequel outlined that was meant to resolve said ambiguity, but alas, it's still sitting in my WIP folder.
Truth in the Periphery. It's a psychological horror story I wrote for an event. I think it's the only fanfic I've ever written that was really intended as a hurt/no comfort kind of story.
Do you write crossovers?
I haven't, but not because I specifically don't. I've just never had an idea that felt compelling enough to follow through on.
have you ever received hate on a fic?
Maaaaybe once or twice a long, long, long time ago, back when FFN was still the best option for posting outside of LiveJournal. I don't think it was even about the writing. I think it was someone was mad that my much younger self tried to sneak smut onto FFN.
Do you write smut? if so, what kind?
I have such a love/hate relationship with smut in my own work. I used to write it a lot because I felt like I had to. It was until I came to terms with being more or less ace irl that it occurred to me why I didn't enjoy writing it. Weirdly, I like reading it just fine.
The thing is, while I don't really care for the physical aspect of it, I like the emotional touchpoints of it, so I do still write smut sometimes. It just tends to be a little cursory in terms of action details and heavy on character dynamics.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No. But I used to RP a lot, and it's always been a lot of fun, so I wouldn't be opposed to the idea!
What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Oh shoot. From a romantic standpoint that varies so much depending on what fandom I'm currently feeling enthusiastic about. It's pretty much always a specific character that draws me to a fandom, so I think the most consistent ship I have is favorite character/unconditional love and support. XD
What’s a wip that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
The sequel to I, The Paradox I mentioned earlier.
What are your writing strengths?
If there's one thing I feel like I have a consistently good handle on, it's emotional impact. I put a lot of thought into why people make the choices they do and how they relate to each other, and I would like to think I'm reasonably adept at leading readers to the emotional response I'm going for.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Descriptions. I'm just forever in awe of people who can just write settings/action naturally. It's a constant effort for me, and it's the thing I always feel like I fall short on. I can write navel gazing in my sleep, but an action scene? Pfftttt.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Very situational. Kind of like in movies and television. I don't have any kind of always x or y opinion on it though.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Inuyasha. It was back when I didn't have a computer of my own and would write at the library, so the only record of it was the site I used to draft and post to that is now defunct. No one is happier about this than I am. 😂
What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
I think I'm genuinely pretty proud of everything I've written in the last couple of years, but if I had to pick right now, it'd be It Doesn't Break But it Bends. It's a time loop fic. Someone left "Recommended but you will sob." as their bookmark note for it and I think that might be my crowning achievement in fandom.
Tagging (if you want!): @mikkeneko @goodheavensgwen @writinglizards @plotdesigner And anyone else who wants to <3

A little guide on ao3 (by an ao3 user and writer)
Friendly reminder for mobile users! Ao3 is a website. It doesn't have (as far as im concerned) an official app for mobile, so better get comfy with using crome on your phone.
Some video links ill leave for people who prefer video and audio:
- navigating the fanfiction sites
- popular fandom terminology part 1 and part 2
- shipping etiquette
i really reccomend coley's videos if you want to get to know more fandoms, or get an inside look to how some stuff works. There also might be more vids about fandom's and fan works, so don't hesitate to look through some of her stuff!
the explaining under the 'read more' ao mutuals wont kill me :)
(also tagging @ethanesimp since they asked for this advice )
So, what is Ao3 really?
Ao3 is a website made by fans for fans. There are no ads, and all content is free on Ao3. Anyone can post (with some age restrictions) and they can post anything.
How can I browse Ao3?
Ao3 does not require an account to view stories. You can easily browse as an anonymous user. You just are not able to view certain works, as creators have the ability to show their works to registered users only. Some cases, commenting is possible while anonymous, but again, it's up to the creator of the work.
If you want to be a creator and share works, you need an account.
An account also gives you the ability to bookmark works, so you can re-visit them, mark works for later, keeps a history of the works you've visited and allows you to favourite tags.
How do I get an Ao3 account?
When you first open the site, it gives you the option to "Get Invited". An invitation will be sent to your email anywhere from 24hrs later to a week later, depending on the amount of people in the automated queue.
After the invitation, you are able to set up your account like any other social media account. Pick a username, pseuds (name), description and bio. You can have a profile picture as well.
How do I navigate the site?
There are few ways to do so efficiently, but there's countless of ways you can experiment with to find which is more comfortable.
1st option: As the website loads, you can go to the 'Fandoms' tag.
Tumblr media
Then, after clicking on it, this column appears. Through there, you can pick which media your fandom is from and from there, browse the huge list of different fandoms until you spot your own.
The list is in alphabetical order, so if your fandom begins with an "C", it shouldn't be too far down.
2nd option: At the top right, under your profile, and the options 'Post' and 'Log Out' should be a white oval search bar.
Tumblr media
(im using my own account for demonstration)
When searching, there are many ways to work around it.
Personally, I press search as it is. It will lead you to a page where all the fanworks of the site are listed. (i believe its easiest, but always feel free to experiment)
Tumblr media
From there, you press the 'Edit Your Search' button, located near the top right.
It will then lead you to a page with multiple fields.
Don't panic when you see all the fields. Only half those are of interest when you want to browse works for a fandom.
The most important ones are those under the Field name 'Work Tags'
Tumblr media
Whatever you select under this field will be included in the works the site presents you with.
What are the work tags? What do they do?
Lets go through the options.
Fandom(s): when typing on this option, multiple fandom names will autofill in a list under the white space. If your fandom shows up, you can just click on it.
example:
Tumblr media
From there, you can select the fandom you want to see works from. If your fandom doesn't show up, it can mean one of two things:
-there are no works for it
-it isn't popular enough to be picked up by the algorithm
After selecting one fandom, you can select another fandom, or more, to see works that are crossovers over universes.
Ratings: Ratings are selected by author. It defines the level of maturity it has in the work
- General audiences is the tag you want to use when nothing bad happens in the work. No swearing, no sexual activities, no violence or gore. It wont contain scenes that minors are not allowed to see.
- Teen and up audiences is the tag used for most works on the site. It is what would be used when you have mentions of/vague sexual content or violence. Normally, the most extreme stuff on there is excessive swearing, heavy angst and hurt/comfort with no excessive details
- Mature is the tag that is for 18+. It is mostly filled with one of following : Violence, Sexual Content, Ab*se, R@pe, Death and SH.
Reader descretion is advised by looking at the additional tags the author has provided, especially for those with triggers.
- Explicit is like Mature, but contains more graphic content. Works rated explicit mostly fall under the 'Graphic depictions of sexual content', 'Graphic depictions of Violence and Gore' or 'Graphic depictions of Ab*se, R@pe, or Self H*rm
Reader descretion is advised, stronger than mature, since it can be much more triggering. The works are scarily detailed sometimes.
- Not rated: the author has not given this work a rating because none of the other ratings fit the work. Pay special attention to the tags.
Warnings: Also known as Archive warnings by older users. The trigger warnings of Ao3. There are 6 archive warnings:
-Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings: The author didn't use the warnings, either because none of them fit the work's theme and warnings, or to avoid spoiling the story. Pay attention to the tags for any warnings.
-Graphic Depictions Of Violence: It is pretty self explanatory. Can contain any sort of violence, from wars, to simple fights, to ab*se of any kind. Can and often contain death. The type of violence is in the tags.
-Major Character Death: A main character in the story will die in this work. Pay attention to the tags always. The name of the character will be mentioned, as well as the way they die.
-No Archive Warnings Apply: None of the warnings apply. It is most times a perfectly safe work. Check the tags to make sure though!
-R@pe/Non-Con: The work contains non-consensual activities. Ranges from non-consensua sex to non-consensual use and ab*se of substances. Very close attention to the tags!
-Underage: The main character(s) in this work are underage/minors. This is normally tagged along sexual content so be aware and pay close attention to the tags!
Categories: This regards the relationships in the work:
- M/M, or better known as mlm or a relationship between two non-woment (men mostly, can include characters under the non-binary umbrella)
- M/F, a heterosexual relationship (is inclusive of trans characters too!)
- F/F, or wlw, or a relationship between two non-men (women mostly, can include characters under the non-binary umbrella)
- Gen, no sexual or romantic relationships are in this work, or if there are any, they arent of main focus.
- Multi: Polyamorous relationships, or multiple relationships are included in this work (this is also where threesomes+ are tagged in sometimes)
- Other relationships: One of the two people in the relationship is non-human (mostly), or the relationships are platonic/family.
Characters: The characters you want to be included in the story. This works just like the 'Fandom' filter, so the same things apply. You can tag as many characters as desirable.
Relationships: The relationships that you want present in the work. This includes both major and minor relationships. It can also include ended relationships (tagged Past x/y) and implied/referenced relationships. This works just like the Characters and Fandom filter.
Additional Tags: These are things the author has included to give potential readers an insight to the story. 'Angst', 'Fluff' and 'Smut' are additional tags. Works like the Relationships filter, so all same applies.
Is there anything I have to avoid/ I should avoid?
There is this very infamous tag, 'Dead Dove: Do not eat.' This tag is a warining to readers that the things in the work are really messed up, and can include anything illegal in it. PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE REST OF THE TAGS IF YOU STILL ARE INTERESTED.
How else can I filter works?
You can choose how they are:
sorted (Titles, Authors, Hits, Kudos, Comments, Bookmarks, and Best Match)
the word count (from 1 word to millions)
the language (most are on there)
the amount of chapters
if the work is complete of not
when it last updated/when was posted
and if there are crossovers.
These are all options that author has to include, and therefore you can sort freely. Most are bulletin options you can click on.
What if I want to find a specific work?
If you happen to know one of these: Author, Title, Fandom or Rating, you will find it. If you were reccomended one, it's better to ask for the author or the title, to make looking for it easier.
Can I find a specific author/ user?
Tumblr media
People search is for finding users on the site
Bookmark search helps you look through other people's public bookmarks. Not really used.
Tag search finds works that include this specific tag you searched. Also not used a lot.
People can see my bookmarks?
When bookmarking a work, you are able to do a lot.
Tumblr media
if you do not want your bookmarks to be visible to the public, make sure to check off the Private bookmark box at the bottom left.
Common terms thrown around by Ao3 users:
-tags: the additional tags of the work
-kudos: liking a story
-bookmarks: saving/saved stories. makes it easy to revist. you can see your bookmarks from your profile
-hits: the amount of people that have clicked on a story. Isn't necessary they liked it, but they did click on it.
And those are the basics! If you had to take one thing only, its ALWAYS READ TAGS
I hope this helped the clueless souls even a bit :)
Im open to reply to any other questions, and you can send me them in my asks, messages or comments of this post

Fic Tag Game
Grabbed from @hils79, because it looked like fun.
Name: Merinnan, which I’ve gone by for... fifteen years now, I think? Prior to that, I mostly used Calicia (and sometimes Zoi).
Fandoms: Like Hils, I’m only going to list the fandoms I’ve actually written fic for.
Star Trek: My very first fandom, and the one I’ve written the most fics for (so far - I suspect that DMBJ will overtake it. It certainly already has in terms of word count). I was (and am still) primarily a DS9 fan, and was a huge Kira/Dukat and Garak/Bashir shipper back in the day. Most of my Trekfics are DS9 fics, but I also dabbled a little bit in TOS and TNG, and had one or two crackfic crossovers that involved Voyager characters. Discovery has tempted me with a few fic ideas, but I haven’t written anything for it yet.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon: aka, the show that first had me seriously questioning my sexuality. Look, Haruka and Michiru are #goals, don’t judge me. This is also where my Zoi name came from, after the first season villain Zoisite, whom I cosplayed several times. Unsurprisingly, my main ships are HaruMichi and KunZoi. Despite this fact, neither of my published Sailormoon fics are HaruMichi.
Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040: A short-lived fandom, but one I still liked enough to write a fic for and get the OST CD.
World of Warcraft: I wouldn’t say I’m really part of the fandom, per se, but I’ve been playing since the dying days of Burning Crusade, am a huge lore nerd, and started writing a crossover fic that is currently on indefinite hiatus. I do plan to come back and finish it, but first RL got in the way, and now I have to try and remember where I’d actually been planning to go with it.
A Court of Thorns and Roses: That crossover fic I just mentioned? Yeah, this is what it’s a crossover with. ACoTaR fandom went sleepy for awhile, but it’s back up and kicking now that A Court of Silver Flames is out - if any of you are still following me, it’s great to see everyone active again! To the surprise of no-one who knows me, I’m a big Nessian shipper.
Mo Dao Zu Shi / Chen Qing Ling / The Untamed: I came to this fandom via ACoTaR, actually, after a certain person (hi, @rhysand-vs-fenrys!) wouldn’t stop gushing about it :-) This is the fandom that really and seriously got me back into regular fic writing again after 15-ish years. I’m a multishipper here, and have written / am writing WangXian, NieLan, XiCheng, XuanLi, and XiSang.
Guardian / Zhen Hun: MDZS fandom led me to Guardian, which, along with DMBJ, has devoured my life in a way that hasn’t happened since my Star Trek days, and I love it! WeiLan is my major ship, but I’m also quite fond of the DaMian life raft.
Zhu Yilong: Yes, I’m going to list a person as a fandom. Zhu Yilong is one of the stars of Guardian, and is both incredibly pretty and an incredibly talented actor. So much so that I have suffered through some truly terrible dramas just to watch him in them. I do not write Z1L-fic, since RPF of living people is a personal squick of mine, but I am working on a massive crossover fic of most of his characters.
Mo Du: Guardian led me along to more of Priest’s works, such as Mo Du, which is now officially my favourite book, and I adore the main WenZhou ship. The Mo Du fandom right now is pretty tiny, and I’m still working on my first fic for it, but I hope that it will grow with the donghua due out this year, and the drama having just started filming.
Daomu Biji / The Lost Tomb: I initially came into this fandom because of Zhu Yilong, who played Wu Xie in the Reboot / Reunion / Chongqi drama, and then I got sucked into the fandom pit of all of the books and dramas and spinoffs, and it’s wonderful and fantastic. I have written so much for it, and have so much more planned. PingXie and PingXieSang are my main ships here, but I’m also a HeiHua fan, and very much enjoying the RiSang pool noodle that @kholran created.
Tropes: Hurt/Comfort and crack are my major ones.
Fic I spent most time on: A toss-up between Endings and Beginnings and Reunion, both DS9 fics. Endings and Beginnings is an alternate ending to the show, while Reunion is a Gul Dukat-centric fic set around, oh, season 5ish? Both were written for and initially published in print fanzines, so in addition to time spent writing, there was a lot of back and forth for editing, etc.
Favourite fic(s) you’ve written: Look, I honestly couldn’t say. I like most of the fics I’ve written, and there are several that I’m really proud of and really like.
Fic I spent least time on: Silent Graves, a super angsty DMBJ/Lost Tomb Xiaoge fic. I think I wrote it in like 15 minutes.
Longest fic: Cat’s Paw, a DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXieSang canon rewrite fic I co-wrote with @xantissa, at  247 826 words. For fics written by just me, not with a co-writer, then that would be Nevermore, my WIP MDZS/CQL XiCheng Pacific Rim AU, at 22 276 words and counting.
Shortest fic: Every entry in my DS9 Drabbles series, with each one at exactly 100 words. Although if you count them as a quintdrabble, then Indiscretion (a DS9 missing scene vignette about Gul Dukat, set during the episode of the same name) at 169 words.
Most hits/kudos/comments/bookmarks/subscriptions: The answer to all of these is either Cat’s Paw or Nevermore, so I’m going to give the next highest.
Hits:  Those who fear darkness have never seen what light can do, a DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXie supernatural AU fic co-written with xantissa.
Since this fic also takes the highest kudos, bookmarks, and subscriptions after Cat’s Paw/Nevermore, I’ll skip to the next fic along on each of those.
Kudos: Stars fall like diamonds, a DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXie missing scene fic from Reboot/Reunion/Chongqi.
Bookmarks: A Knight in Bloody Armour, another DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXieSang supernatural AU fic (but a different supernatural AU) co-written with xantissa.
Comments: Ears and Other Related Calamities, yet another DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXieSang supernatural AU fic (of a different again supernatural AU) co-written with xantissa.
Subscriptions: The Rescue Job, a Guardian WeiLan Leverage AU, currently at one chapter complete and posted out of a planned five chapters.
Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: We have plans for a prequel and a sequel to A Knight in Bloody Armour, and a spinoff fic for The Zhang Identity (a DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXie AU that is complete but not yet posted. It will be posted in April as part of the Small Fandoms Big Bang).
Share a bit of a WIP: This is from an as-yet-unnamed post-canon fix-it fic for the Guardian drama:
It was hurting again. Zhao Yunlan curled up into a tight ball under the hospital blankets, trying to ignore it enough to try to get back to sleep. He knew it wouldn't work, because he couldn't remember a time when it ever did, but it was always worth a shot, right? He squeezed his eyes shut and held himself tightly for a few...moments? Minutes?...before grabbing his stuffed cat and clutching it while he forced himself to breathe deep, slow breaths the way the doctors back in Spring City had taught him.
Eventually, the pain died back down to its usual dull ache, the one that was bearable and let him play, and watch TV, and do school lessons with his mother. One day, she said, they'd find a doctor who knew what was wrong, why he hurt all the time, and the doctor would give him medicine that would keep the worst pain away so that he could go to an actual school and meet more kids than the ones who lived in their apartment block or who frequented the same playground that he liked to go to.
Zhao Yunlan tried closing his eyes again, seeing if he could go back to sleep, but he was far too awake now. He sighed, sitting up in bed and looking around the room. Again. It was just like the hospital rooms in Spring City, and in Kiyota City. He figured that if the doctors here in Tomorrow Mountains couldn't help, his parents would take him to yet another city, and the hospital rooms there would probably look the same, too.
Then, over the faint beeping of hospital equipment, and the quiet murmurs further down the corridor of nurses at the nurse station or seeing to other patients, he heard a soft sniffling sound, like someone was trying not to cry too loudly. He picked up his stuffed cat and looked at it.
"What do you think, Dead Cat?" he asked it. "Should we go and find them?"
Dead Cat didn't answer, of course, but that didn't stop Zhao Yunlan from assuming that it agreed with him, and slipping out of bed. His feet touched the cold tile floor with barely a sound, and, still holding Dead Cat tightly, Zhao Yunlan padded over to the door. He looked up and down the corridor, then left his room to track down the sniffling noise.
He wasn't surprised that it came from the next room. He was surprised that it came from another kid, a boy who looked to be about his age, huddled in bed and wiping his eyes.
"Hi," Zhao Yunlan whispered. The other boy looked up in surprise, then stopped to clutch his chest as he began to cough. Once he'd finished coughing, Zhao Yunlan and Dead Cat were perched on the end of his bed.
"I'm Zhao Yunlan, and this is Dead Cat." He held up Dead Cat, moving one of the paws to wave hello. "What's your name?"
The boy wiped his eyes again. "Shen Ye."
I tag: ALL OF YOU! Are you a writer who hasn’t done this yet? Consider yourself tagged if you want to be.

Fic Tag Game
Tagged by these lovely humans: @milficwriter, @wonderofasunrise, and @useless-fangirl-does-fan-art
AO3 name: pgk
Fandoms: ER
Tropes: Coming out, Grief, Tragedy... Lesbianism lol
Number of fics: 3
Fic I spent the most time on: Home by far... going on nine months of writing that fic (ironically)
Fic I spent the least time on: I think Maybe would be the least amount of time, just because my other one shot went through many many rounds of editing to ensure it was as perfect as I was capable of making it (because it was a gift)
Longest fic: Home. 150k+ currently
Shortest fic: Well Worth Waiting at just a little over 4k
Most hits: Home
Most kudos: Home
Most comments: Home
Most bookmarks: Home
Favourite fic you've written: Home... I have poured my heart and soul into this fic that I didn’t think would be more than a fun way to spend my summer in quarantine. Now there is a fictional child involved who only lives in this universe who I might actually miss when I am done writing. I truly feel I’ve peaked with this fic, which is at once exciting and depressing haha
Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: I want to expand on both of my one shots! I have a prequel to WWW heavily plotted, as well as an idea for a sequel. And I’d love to write a follow up for Maybe exploring what might happen down the line when the timing works out a little better for them...
Share a bit of a WIP or story idea you're working on: I haven’t talked about this one at all and have wanted to keep it a bit of a surprise, so won’t say much more about it than this is still at the brain-dump stage and not editing or fleshed out at all, but I am getting excited about potentially writing the whole thing. This is truly all I have so far.
“Hey, Kerry.” Jeanie looked up from her coffee when Kerry entered the lounge. Kerry paused slightly at the door, desperate to turn back and find somewhere that was secluded, where she could be alone, but leaving would be too obvious now so she pushed herself further into the room.
“Hi,” she managed the briefest of smiles before crossing to her locker. She truly had no reason to go into it but she fumbled through it regardless, making a show of her fictitious reason for entering the lounge in the first place.
“Are you alright?” The woman at the table turned to face her, keeping her coffee mug in her hands. She took a sip and then continued when Kerry didn’t respond. “I heard about what happened upstairs.”
Kerry spun to face her, her eyes wide. “What do you mean you heard, what did you hear?”
Jeanie recoiled slightly, shaking her head in assurance. “Nothing really, Carol just said you left the meeting pretty abruptly, she wanted to know if you were okay.”
Her heart had already resumed its rapid pace at the mere mention of the events upstairs but Kerry did her best to keep the panic off of her face.
“I’m fine.”
Jeanie didn’t look convinced, but slightly turned back to the table anyway. Kerry turned back to her locker, fussing with her hanging jacket, as if she was retrieving something from the pockets when in reality she was just trying to decide if she’d been in her locker long enough for it to seem like she’d actually been doing something.
“Carol said they’d just brought up the Benzene spill…” Jeanie began carefully.
“Yeah,” Kerry cut her off quickly, turning her head to face her. “You know, I think that I’m just having a hard time talking about it.” She said dismissively before realizing exactly how vulnerable that confession made her feel.
“I don’t blame you… that was a scary day.” Jeanie lifted her spoon to stir her now lukewarm coffee. Kerry turned back to her locker and shut it slowly, her eyes tracking back and forth in front of her while she debated whether to say what her brain was telling her to or run out the door without looking back.
“Yeah, it was.” She began, turning and leaning slightly back against her locker, holding her hands clasped in front of herself awkwardly, her crutch leaning at her side. “I appreciate what you did for me that day.” She said abruptly, and Jeanie turned in her chair to face her again. “The memories are… spotty, at best. But you were a constant.” Her heart was pounding in her chest and her fingers had turned cold again. Was the topic of the chemical spill really going to plague her for the rest of her life?
“Of course.” Jeanie smiled lightly, and Kerry realized this was the lightest, most genuine conversation they’d had since she’d laid her off… or attempted to, anyway.
As their eyes met, they held the eye contact just long enough for Kerry to be suddenly unable to keep from tearing herself away, her whole body springing instantly into desperate action to get herself as far from the lounge as possible, her hand fumbling for her crutch. Her hands were trembling so intensely, however, that as she reached for the crutch instead of grabbing it, she all but slapped it over and it clattered loudly on the floor. Jeanie rose out of her chair to retrieve it but Kerry was faster, leaning down and securing it around her arm again before Jeanie could even return to her chair. The room was stifling, Kerry suddenly unable to get a full breath again, and she waved very briefly before bounding back out the door, never so grateful to be greeted by an incoming trauma.
“What have we got?”
A lot of the people who I would normally tag have already completed this, but I’m having a blast reading everyone’s answers so if you haven’t been tagged, please play anyway!

hi chel! i hope this is ok to ask but if it isnt, you dont have to answer. lately, ive been struggling with my writing. i do still enjoy writing, but i find myself doubting myself more often. i sometimes wonder if what im writing is realistic to how the characters would act, or if my writing is embarrassing. i started posting my works on ao 3 more recently and... while my writing gets a somewhat decent? amount of attention, ill see other works with a lot of engagement and wonder if im doing
Tumblr media
heyy nonny! ofc this was okay to ask!! firstly, i totally feel you. it’s completely natural to have moments when you’re unsure and dissatisfied with your writing. if you still enjoy the process of writing, then that’s great! i want to make it clear that your feelings may linger but they will pass!!
i talked about this in an ask on my writing blog once but my three biggest writing tips are: “a first draft is a first draft”, “if you’re writing is indulging you then it’s met your target audience” and “as long as your characterisation is consistent to how you feel about the character everything is fine”.
i think, especially, when you’re writing fanfiction that these are things that you keep in mind! when characterising characters, i can’t personally tell you whether how you feel and thus write about them is ‘correct’ or not! no one can, because the lens of which you read and write them is dependent on your whole life worth of experiences!! and this is fine!! you don’t have to write characters exactly as they are in canon, and in all honestly no one truly expects you too. people read fanfiction because they want other interpretations of a story/characters that they love!! as long your characterisation is consistent to you, rather than realistic to someone else’s standards i think you’ll be okay!
now, posting on ao3 is always a double edged sword, and once again, i totally get where you’re coming from. i think everyone who posts semi frequently has a work that they love, which gets barely any attention, and other works that maybe are more of a joke or a quick thing that do surprisingly well. sadly, you can’t force readers or engagement, you can only put your stuff out and hope. if your numbers seem small and the engagement does seem low in comparison to other people, this doesn’t necessarily mean you’re doing something wrong and as hard as that is to internalise or believe, please trust me on this!! i’ve read many a fic with barely any interaction and they’ve been brilliant, likewise i’ve read a lot of fic with a whole bunch of engagement that i personally didn’t enjoy.
a quick initial solution that helped me when seeing numbers really started to bog me down was using the site skin that removed all statistics from every work, my own included. this meant that i could still read fics, but i wouldn’t see anyones numbers, and it also meant when i went on my own page i was forced to look at my works for what they’re about rather than how “well or not” they did by numbers.
another thing that really helped me was advice from a tiktok i can’t currently find which basically said: “30, 60, 100 views might not seem like a lot on the internet, but imagine if that many people walked into your room and saw what you’ve created. they chose to come and see what you’ve created. 15, 40, 60 likes may not feel like a lot but imagine if that many people who had walked into your room to see what you’ve created and told you they liked your work. it would be pretty overwhelming.” i think there’s a really important message in that tiktok. every view, every kudo, comment and bookmark — even if it’s few — is an individual who chose to take a look at your work! they wanted to read it! some of them felt brave enough to kudo and tell you they enjoyed it! some of them were even braver and left a comment saying what they enjoyed! sure, it can feel underwhelming in comparison, but people are engaging, people do care and like your work!
the only person your writing has to be ‘good enough’ for is yourself! and if you enjoyed writing it then external numbers are just a bonus, no matter how big or small!! dissatisfaction is natural and expected from time to time, like i said earlier it will pass. sometimes it’s even a good thing, because if you finish something but feel dissatisfied, that might motivate you to write another draft, or redo a section or take a section out or add a section in! as long as this process is because you want to and it’ll make you happier with your work that’s good. if it’s draining it might be a hint that you should take a break from that project and try something else that you enjoy. you can always comeback. and on that note your ao3 and the fics you post there are not set in stone. if one day you decide you want to revamp a fic, do it! that’s allowed! it’s not a printed published fic! just hit that edit button and change at your hearts content. no one will mind! if anything those few people who might love you fic may be super happy that when they reread it, there’s something new or things have changed a bit!!
i’m really lucky that i have a friend that is not only is doing an english degree but writes fanfic herself, and other friends who frequently read fics and hc stuff over shared fandoms, so there’s always someone there to read my stuff — if you’ve got irl friends that are in your fandom spaces that you trust, i say subject yourself to the mortifying ordeal of being known and talk to them about it!! writing fics in isolation can be pretty hard!! online, i think if you’ve got the nerves to handle it (i do not OTL), twitter is a great place to interact with other writers!! my tips are maybe follow some of your fave writers and try and strike up a conversation?? be wary of the numbers again on twitter!!! similarly, if you do have a tumblr, talk to some of your favourite writers on here, and follow some writing/ao3 based blogs to see whose in the community! apparently there’s even discords for writers these days, so if you’re up to it that’s a great shout. if we’re in overlapping fandoms i love hearing people’s hcs so you can always throw them at me here or on my writing blog!!
i’m sorry that my reply got so long!! i hope that in some way it helps you even a little!! i’m sure you’re writing is pretty amazing and that it’s only going to get better the more you read and write!! have a great day nonny, and good luck, you can push through this!! 💗

Fiction Writer Meme
Courtesy of @wspaceblog tagging me.
Fandoms: Marvel (IronStrangeFrost and variations of it), FFXIV (I have stuff on the backburner for this)
Number of fics: 36
Fic I spent the most time on: Arcane Meridian
Fic I spent the least time on: Scribbles on Our Souls
Longest fic: Time-Lost (170,078 words, not including the outtakes)
Shortest fic: The Bed Grinch (868 words)
Most hits: Time-Lost (17,294 hits)
Most kudos: Time-Lost (541 kudos)
Most comment threads: Heart of Gold (158 comment threads)
Most bookmarks: Time-Lost  (210 bookmarks)
Total word count: 924,704 words (on AO3)
Favorite fic I wrote: This is really hard? I have four top contenders and it’s complicated! Time-Lost is always going to be nostalgic and special to me in a lot of ways, I often reread it. Arcane Meridian had a lot of struggles, but also wound up being a world I just really loved, and I think of dragon Stephen a lot! Fathomless, like Arcane Meridian, is a world I loved and the story that always felt the most complete to me. And Dreams & Fantasies has some of my favourite individual scenes in all of the stories we’ve done.
Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: Beyond the Mirror - Since writing it I had a bit of backstory for other!Stephen here that I always kinda meant to expand on. I most likely never will, since stories like Time-Lost have planned expansions that are waiting in the wings, but it was always a thought to write about how things went wrong in other!Stephen’s universe.
Share a bit of a WIP or a story idea you’re planning on: Coming up, sometime in the future, we will be bringing to you guys “Dulcinea”! Here’s a (currently uneditted) snippet below the cut:
It was either a parade or an execution, judging by the way people were reacting.
He didn't see the carriage pull up, he didn't see the four Magi heirs exit, or hear more than the clamour outside the doors that signalled their arrival. Instead, Anthony Edward Stark the Emperor of Iron, sat on his throne atop the dais quietly as the throne room doors opened and those within descended into silence.
The heirs walked single file in silence as they entered, led by a short, stout bald man with a serious expression - the only one among them without irons on, and thus the one Tony's guards reacted to most strongly. He bowed respectfully as he reached the end of the walkway before stepping aside.
Behind him followed an older man - in his sixties, if Tony had to guess - with curly hair and a salt and pepper beard. His green robes were elegant and sophisticated, accented with an abundance of silver and stunning sapphires that caught the light in a way that left Tony wondering if they'd been enchanted. Brown eyes met brown and the man bowed.
"Master Sol Rama, heir to the throne of Vishan," the attendant introduced simply, and Tony inclined his head to the man briefly, watching him adjust the irons on his wrists before moving to the left.
The man who followed him wore rather practical looking tan robes, and the silver and rubies stood in stark contrast to the man's dark skin and sharp eyes. He was no less adorned than the previous man, though Tony took a moment to admire the clear fitness of the man with his bared biceps on display. Not unlike the man before him, the man bowed politely, though a little lower than the first - Tony assumed that was a product of age and fitness.
"Master Daniel Drumm, heir to the throne of Vishan," the attendant stated again, and with Tony's nod of understanding, he took his place on the opposite side of the aisle from Master Rama.
Behind him, previously entirely concealed behind the broad form of Master Drumm, came a small, willowy woman, with eyes the shape and colour of almonds. Her robes appeared longer and more dress-like than the former heirs, in a rich magenta colour that was accented by the gold and diamond-studded jewellery she wore. The irons were much more obvious on her as Tony found he couldn't simply pretend they were part of her jewellery.
She smiled politely at him and gave a graceful bow as the attendant announced her, "Master Tina Minoru, heir to the throne of Vishan."
Tony offered a nod and the woman stepped to the left leaving the last of the heirs to step forward.
Though not as tall as Master Drumm, there was a particular elegance - a haughtiness, perhaps - in the way the last of the heirs carried himself. Black hair greyed at his temples, and bright eyes watched him, flickering in colour not unlike Master Rama’s sapphires, as the man in dark blue robes adorned with gold and emeralds approached the dais, bowing quietly and with a certain detachment.
"Master Stephen Strange," the attendant announced, "heir to the throne of Vishan. With that, all of the heirs of Vishan are present for your choosing."
Tony had barely nodded when the man in blue straightened, tucking his arms behind his back and looking around the room absently. The Emperor raised an eyebrow at that briefly before clearing his throat and getting to his feet.
"Thank you all for making such an arduous journey during these challenging times. The efforts that have gone into securing this peace have been seen and acknowledged, and I hope those of you who return to your home tomorrow will do so satisfied that we will uphold our agreement."
~~
We hope you’re looking forward to it!

By kudos, most popular multi-chap: Still Damnatio Memoriae  in the Lucifer fandom. I have got to find a way to end that story - three years later, 4000 words in the final chapter and I am so lost on what to do with it I just stare at it and close the document out again.
Personal favourite (fic): Despite being my mortal enemy,  Damnatio Memoriae ranks pretty high up there, though it’s tied evenly with in-progress  Wrong Side of Heaven for Magnum and  Left Behind  for the 100 and completed  Running Up That Hill for Agents of SHIELD.
Method for titling fics:....usually whatever phrase comes to mind when I stare at that empty block before posting
Work I am nervous about posting: Possibly the one I have planned for Haunting of Hill House, because it’s a wildly divergent opinion from most of the fandom, which is that Steven isn’t that bad a brother.
Do you outline your work or just wing it? Out...line? What is this...out...line? Never heard of her. In all seriousness, every time I outline something, I never follow it or it causes such a writer’s block that I wind up screaming at the computer, so I stopped doing it.
AO3 Stats (some info can be found on your Dashboard):

But look...I’m going to share the ones from FFN, because I want to, and I still have an account there, and there were some really lovely people who basically made Damnatio into a Choose Your Own Adventure:
This is just for Damnatio:  Reviews:  1,129 Views:  401,934 Favs:  1,399 Alerts:  1,756 I am having heart palpitations about letting down that many people send help
Tagging anyone who wants to play, because I think most writers I know are pretty shy about sharing stats like this, but if you want to play and just don’t want to answer everything, that’s fine too.

An update
Normally I keep this blog purely for my writing and I do plan to keep it this way, but, this one time, I’m making an exception to write something a bit personal.
I finished my bachelors degree in May 2019 and after four years of being stressed, reading textbooks and finishing assignments at 11pm, I found I no longer had an excuse not to write. Naturally, I procrastinated and didn’t end up publishing anything until December 2019. Soon after though, I’d found my joy again, I loved writing, something I hadn’t enjoyed since 2010.
From there, I’ve taken part in events, written pieces that are huge and really challenged me and some relatively small (that still challenged me) for ZoNami, SaNami and LuNami.
When I started this blog, I wasn’t expecting anyone to follow this blog because I’m a multi-shipper or people wouldn’t be interested in my writing. I started writing for myself, so my brain would finally leave me alone and to put out pieces that I would love to read, but along the way, it’s morphed. I still write for myself, but I also find myself thinking of all you lovely people. The people who leave likes, reblogs, comments, kudos, bookmarks, reviews, favourites, follows and share my work across Tumblr, FFN and AO3. The One Piece community is tiny and there’s only a handful of us between each pairing I write for but I’ve never felt more appreciated. So, really, my previous expectations have been blown away. Along the way, I’ve made friends who I talk to frequently or there’s familiar people I see in my reviews, that leave lovely words and we talk and they spur me on, give me motivation/ideas to write. It’s been wonderful.
So really, what I’m trying to say so far, is thank you. It’s lifted my spirits in uncertain times and hopefully I’ve been able to do the same for you. I always want to thank you in every story I publish but that gets a bit repetitive, doesn’t it? (and I talk enough as it is in my author notes). So, I figured now that I have the chance, I’m running with it.
But I’ve digressed. Finally, I’m getting to the point of this post. In a few weeks time, at the end of September 2020, I will be embarking on my masters degree. I’m absolutely terrified but I couldn’t be more excited. However, it leaves me wondering how much time I’ll actually have to write. When I started writing properly and consistently from March 2020, it was because of the pandemic and I’ve been on furlough ever since. I’ve used that time to write because I’d never have this opportunity again to be so selfish and coming out the other side, I regret nothing. I enjoyed every moment of it and I’d do it again if I could. I’m only sad that I can’t do it forever, but I’ve digressed again. What I’m trying to say is, this is not a goodbye. I have zero plans to stop writing, in fact, my notes on my phone are filled with story ideas and WIPS. Instead, it’s a ‘see you as soon as I can’. My plan for the moment is to devote myself to my masters but, hopefully, I should have some down time and it’s only for a year. I’m hoping during this time I will still be writing and posting but just at a slower rate.
I still have 2-3 weeks left before I start and there’s one piece that I’m adamant about getting out before I go and another piece (that has haunted me for over a year! It’s huge!) that I want to write the bulk of so it’s almost complete and I can finish it off along the way.
So yeah, that’s my announcement and plan. I don’t want you all to think I’m not active anymore or I’ve fallen into the abyss. I’ll still be around and writing, just not as quickly as I have been.
As always, please excuse any errors (I wrote this on my phone).
Until next time.

Writing Tag Game
I've never done this and it looks like fun! Thanks for the tag, @visionarygalaxy 💖
No tags, but please do this, it is a fun fic retrospective thing.
(I apologize if I missed any tags for previous memes - this has been a terribly busy seven days. Please ping me via PM if I missed anything 💖)

Share a bit of WIP or story you are planning: okay! tagging @wspaceblog for this because it's a WIP of something we've been talking about 😺
Tony grew up in his father's tailoring shop. In his three decades there, he had witnessed a lot of people coming and going - but few truly made an impression on him.
Off the top of his head, in fact, he could think of only two:
One was someone who never set foot in the shop at all. It was a boy about twelve (Tony's age), bone-thin and pale, with dirty blonde hair.
He always looked like he had come out of a fight - there was sometimes a bruise on his face, or a torn sleeve, or a ripped shirt collar. But always, he entered Tony's line of sight with a sort of rage burning in his baby blue eyes.
He would stand in front of the shop and look up at the display mannequins, which changed clothes every Wednesday - and, slowly but surely, the anger on his face would fade.
It would take on a serene look - as if he were staring not at clothes, but at works of art.
And sometimes the boy would look beyond the mannequins, and set those baby blues on Tony's face. And when he saw that Tony noticed, he became flustered. A touch of color graced those gaunt cheekbones.
More than once, Tony opened the door to the shop, hoping to invite the boy in. But the boy always fled whenever he heard the knob turn.
- and in the end, it was all right, because Tony's dad hated letting "the rabble" into his exclusive shop. That boy neatly fit into his father's definition of "the rabble."
One day, the boy just stopped standing in front of the shop. Tony always wondered where he'd gone.
The other was someone who arrived way later: a boy about nineteen (Tony's age). He strode in with the confidence of someone who could afford the goods.
Tony never actually knew if the boy had money. He only knew that the boy was good at looking like he did.
And he only knew that the boy liked running his fingers over the finest cloth they had.
His dad didn't like this, of course, but didn't see any cause to throw him out. The boy wasn't damaging the merchandise.
He just sent Tony out to deal with the kid. And Tony had to deal with the kid a lot. The kid visited the shop several times, just looking and touching for a few minutes, and just letting Tony talk about the selections on which he lingered.
The kid had a self-important air about him that unsettled Tony somewhat, but at the same time, drew him in.
Tony's dad didn't like him.
That might have been part of what made it so much fun for Tony to escort him all over the shop, telling him anything and everything that came to mind - all but spilling his most precious trade secrets and sewing tips.
Tony didn't mind if the kid just came to waste time; his quiet, yet intense presence was welcome.
One day, the kid found it: the cloth with the exact pattern and texture that he wanted. His holy grail.
It was a good choice, too - one of their most tasteful, most expensive velvets.
"How much to make a fully bespoke suit out of this?" the kid asked him.
And Tony was taken aback, first by how soft and sultry the boy's voice was - exquisite, like mulberry silk.
And then, by how clear and brilliant his eyes were. Like subtly colored glass.
No choice, really, but for Tony to turn on the charm.
"For you," Tony said, all saccharine, "just six thousand."
(What? The kid was hot, but Tony wasn't about to go too low on a suit made of one of the best fabrics in the house.)
The kid didn't dispute the figure. He fell silent for a moment, feeling the scrap of cloth between his fingers in a light, almost reverent manner.
"I'll need a fully bespoke suit in a few years," the kid eventually said. "That fabric had better be ready for me."
"Years?" Tony echoed with unflagging sweetness. "We don't reserve for that long, especially not without a deposit. And especially not when people can still grow out of the cut." He gently took the fabric from the boy's hand. Their fingers briefly touched, and Tony brushed aside the light tingle that crept up his spine on contact. "Come back a few months before you actually need the suit, okay? And I'll personally see what we can do for you."
The boy just stood, staring into Tony's eyes as if determining his sincerity.
Then, the boy nodded, and wordlessly left the store.
He didn't come back in the following days. Or months. Or years, even, as initially stated.
The boy hadn't even left his name. By all accounts, this told Tony that he wasn't actually serious about the reservation.
But Tony still kept a few yards of the velvet material he had chosen stored away. He wasn't sure why.

‘All that’s best of dark and bright’ - a Draco x Hermione x Theo story - Chapter Two
Chapter One here: Tumblr | Ao3
Tumblr media
Chapter Two Summary:
As Hermione settles into her (predictably) monstrous workload this term, she finds herself torn between memories from 'before' and the way things are now, and it leaves her drifting and anxious. Her tentative friendship with a certain Slytherin prefect isn't quite as helpful as it might be, and after a slight misunderstanding with Malfoy in a Potions class, she finds her way out into the grounds to Hagrid's hut for a cup of tea and a cuddle with the now rather aged Fang...
___
Huge huge huge thank you to everyone who read this and left kudos, bookmarked it, or commented! You're the reason I'm posting this second chapter so soon! It was mostly written, and just needed an edit this morning. Thank you so much! I hope you like this one - there's a mix of fluff and a touch of angst.
I also don't intend to update every day, and this chapter is nearly 4k words long.
And remember when I said this was slow burn? Just... reminding you of that. :)

Chapter Two
To say that Hermione was busy this year was… a tiny bit of an understatement. Like saying a nundu had morning breath, or an acromantula could be contained in a water glass like a house spider.
Sure, she’d pushed the definition of ‘busy’ in her third year, but now, even without a time turner, she was still cramming in as many N.E.W.T’s as she possibly could. It didn’t matter that she’d actually already taken one of them before term started, under the supervision of the headmistress. It didn’t excuse her from attending Advanced Arithmancy Studies, Potions, Ancient Runes, Charms, Transfiguration, Herbology, and even an Ancient Studies elective. When she wasn’t holed up in her favourite corner of the library - where she, Ron, and Harry had all gathered over the years to do research both academic and illicit - she managed to find time to tutor some of the younger students, while also acting as a teaching assistant in Muggle Studies three times a week, and patrolling with Nott on their rota nights.
Three weeks into term, she closed up her books and paused on the cusp of leaving that hallowed library corner, and stared at it. Her eyes prickled with exhaustion, and she blinked and fought off a yawn. Dust motes danced in the dim dusk that gathered and pooled in the darkness between the shelves, like a cat arching its back and begging her for just one more stroke before she left.
So many memories had crystallised there over the years, each one so breathtakingly tangible, that all it would take was the brush of a fingertip on a book’s spine here or the scratchy rhythm of a quill on parchment there to bring every single one of them rushing back, vivid and sacred as a pensieve’s collection. She could trace her fingers over the wonky ‘R.W’ that Ron had idly carved into the table in their first year, and even see the faint shadow of an ink stain where Harry had upset an entire bottle of unsmudgeable ink when Cho had smiled at him once in fourth year. Memories had been etched into this corner of the castle like none other, and just breathing in the musty smell of dust and parchment eased her racing heart when things got a little… frantic. Which, she was loathe to admit, was beginning to happen more and more often as the weeks ticked by.
Her hair was looking a touch frantic and frazzled now too. Perhaps she could nip into Hogsmeade and pick up a few potions to help with that at least, and she made a mental note to slot it into her timetable that she’d devised for the weekend.
On patrol that night, as she bit back her umpteenth yawn, Nott looked down at her and said, “We’re only three weeks into term, Granger. You shouldn’t be this exhausted already.”
“I’m fine,” she snapped, leading the way down a corridor lined with severe suits of armour. She half expected them to salute or start filing out into the courtyard again, and it make the hairs on the back of her neck rise. Nott hadn’t been here for the Battle, having been evacuated at the last moment with a load of other students, and she wondered how he felt about that, and how he would have acted had he been there. Had he defended their ranks or had he fled at the fore?
Nott’s smooth, rich voice recalled her attention to the present. “… taking about a million classes, Granger,” he chuckled. “Plus everything else on your timetable.”
She ground to a halt with a scowl and glared up at him. “And how would you know what’s on my timetable?” she asked, prickling further. Her hair had probably just swelled in volume too, as if it had gained sentience, but she resisted the urge to smooth it down. About half of it had already sprung out of the plait she’d woven it into earlier, and she didn’t feel like stopping to fix her hair in front of the smarmy Slytherin. This was the longest she’d ever worn it, not having bothered to cut it since… she couldn’t even remember the last time she’d had a haircut. Two years, perhaps?
Nott just rolled his eyes and tucked his hands into his pockets. “I don’t know exactly what’s on your timetable, of course. I just know you’re always scuttling around the place like one of McGonagall’s transfiguration beetles.”
“Oh. Well, yes, I am… busy,” she admitted with a rather unsatisfactory huff. “How many subjects are you taking?”
“Four,” he said. That was more than most took for N.E.W.T.’s, she knew. “Potions, Arithmancy, Charms, and Ancient Runes.”
“Oh.”
Pausing at the statue of the Hogwarts Architect, he cocked his head and raised one eyebrow. “Don’t tell me, five?”
She rolled her eyes and looked away, embarrassed. “Six, with Ancient Studies as an elective.”
Nott froze. “Slytherin’s Shitsticks, Granger,” he gawped, losing his usual quiet calm for a moment. “You’re aware that’s completely nuts, right?”
If he made her roll her eyes one more time she was going to get vertigo. “I’m aware that taking this many is… unconventional… but… McGonagall thinks I can do it. Besides, I already took my Transfiguration exam before term started. I just have to attend the classes as a formality, but I don’t actually have to do any of the assignments. I passed, by the way.”
“Right,” he said slowly. “Which is why you were in the library yesterday, surrounded by a veritable fortress of Transfiguration textbooks.”
Her shoulders dropped and she felt her eyes stinging. I didn’t go through the entire Second bloody Wizarding War to let some pureblood Slytherin arsehole bully me about how many classes I’m taking, she thought, grinding her teeth. She was the next thing to stamping her foot in frustration when the wall beside them in the Entrance Hall rippled and revealed the passageway to the Slytherin dungeons, and Malfoy of all people stepped out with a face like a thunderhead.
“Draco?” Nott murmured, leaving Hermione immediately and going over to him. He touched him on the upper arm in a very familiar, and oddly tender, gesture and Malfoy’s silver eyes dropped to the point of contact before darting up to his face. “What’s up? Why are you out at this time of night?”
“I…” Malfoy began but his eyes drifted to Hermione and his gaze hardened to steel instantly. “Nothing. Forget it.” And he turned on his heel and disappeared back the way he’d come.
Nott watched him go until the wall closed up behind him, and he turned with a serious expression on his handsome face. “Suppose you’ll want to dock some points for his being out and about after dark,” he grumbled like a child caught with his hand in the sweetie jar.
With a flat look, Hermione snorted. “You really think I’m petty enough to dock points from someone who looks like he hasn’t had a full night’s sleep in two years? Come on, I’m not that heartless.”
Nott stood there and stared at her for a moment before a shy, small smile graced his lips. “Never thought I’d see the day when you covered for a Slytherin, let alone Draco.”
Any comeback she might have had died in her throat. Wordlessly, she shook her head. Then, feeling her shoulders drop a little as she recalled the exact expression on Malfoy’s face, she said gently, “I’ll finish up. You should go and check on him.”
“Granger, you don’t have to -” he began but she was already walking away. Nott didn’t follow her, and when she reappeared after checking that the Great Hall was empty and still, the Entrance Hall was deserted too. With a quick glance at the now blank wall, she smiled privately and headed off to climb into bed and fall asleep almost before her head even hit the pillow.
Waking even earlier than usual, Hermione lay in her red-draped four-poster and stared up at the canopy. It was one of those mornings where she hardly dared breathe in case everything shattered around her. If she blinked, she might wake up in a frozen tent in the Forest of Dean. “Stop it,” she scolded herself, forcing her body to move and sit upright. The covers pooled around her waist as she did, and she reached for a book on her bedside table. It was a muggle novel, and one she’d read countless times. She had Potions first, but there was nothing to prepare for it, so she had an hour and a half between the start of breakfast and the start of classes to fill.
Eventually swinging her feet out of bed after re-reading her favourite passages, she drew back the drapes of her four-poster and glanced out of the window.
Perhaps it was the months spent living in a tent under constant vigilance that made her look out, but whatever it was, she saw a lone figure flying over the quidditch pitch in wild, daring loops, climbing ever higher and higher until she lost them in the clouds, only for them to come rocketing out in a breakneck, plunging dive that brought her hand to her mouth and her heart to her throat as she stared, transfixed. They disappeared behind the walls of the arena, and for a heart-stopping few seconds, she thought they’d crashed, but to her relief, the figure shot back up and wove between the goalposts at an astonishing speed. They moved like a snitch - quick and unpredictable, as though following a flight of whimsy rather than directing a broomstick.
Flying had never been one of her fortes, but a lack of interest in the sport of quidditch - something of a sore point between her and Ron - did not mean she didn’t admire those who could fly like Harry and Ginny did; all raw instinct and untethered speed. She shuddered at the thought of straddling a broomstick. The last time she’d been on one had been escaping the Room of Requirement and the snapping, burning jaws of a fiendfyre curse. No, there was no way she’d ever get back on a broom again.
She turned away from the window with a shudder and got dressed to go down to the Great Hall early. There would hardly be anyone there at that time of the morning, and she always enjoyed the bacon and eggs when it was absolutely fresh from the pan. The stasis charms worked fine, but there was something about having it straight away that just tasted so much better. It reminded her of mornings with her parents that she would never get to experience again. Besides, the coffee wouldn’t be over-brewed now either.
Entering and making her way habitually to the Gryffindor table, she saw that all was as she’d expected - almost completely empty. With a smile, she settled down in their - hers, Harry’s and Ron’s - usual place about halfway down, and reached for a nearby plate of fresh fruit, ladling some into the little bowl that appeared in front of her just in time.
A prickling on the back of her neck made her freeze and she turned to find Theodore Nott standing a little way off, a copy of the Daily Prophet in his hands. The ink stains from the day before hadn’t faded completely, and in his top pocket she could just glimpse a pair of dark rimmed glasses. He looked more like an absent-minded professor than a student and the sight of him made her insides heat unexpectedly. “Morning,” he said, apparently unaware of the effect he’d had on her. His voice was still gruff and deeper, the rough edges of sleep still lingering. “I was just leaving. Prophet?”
She regarded him carefully for a second or two and then smiled. “Sure. Thank you.”
He approached, set it down beside her bowl, and smiled. “See you in Potions.”
Hermione glanced at the front page, but her curious gaze wandered back down the hall and watched Nott retreat. He was all long, lean lines and he moved with the grace of a doe. He’d have made a good dancer, she thought, surprising herself again and scowling. If she’d had time to think about these things before - instead of haring around the country in a constant state of terror - perhaps she might not be so terrible at dealing with these kinds of intrusive thoughts about how pretty Theodore Nott’s freckles looked or how good his hair looked still slightly ruffled from sleep. Good Godric, even his scratchy voice had sounded attractive.
This would not do.
With a little flurry and a stern talking to, she picked up the paper and turned her attentions to current affairs.
The headlines were full of the Ministry’s efforts at rebuilding everything again, but there was a small feature on Harry that was mostly fiction. She read it with a rueful smile on her lips while she finished her breakfast off, and then folded it up and left it on the table for someone else. At least, the article had sounded like fiction. She’d not actually heard back from either Harry or Ron since the start of term. As she stalked out of the hall she tried to ignore the twinge in her chest at the sight of a group of three first years - yes, two boys and a girl - animatedly nattering on about the staircases and the portraits and all the marvellous wonders of Hogwarts that now seemed so terribly ordinary to her. She reminded herself to open her eyes a bit more and try to recall a little of that awe she’d felt for at least the first four years of her time there.
Where had it all gone? When had she stopped being amazed at everything? The inside of her left forearm throbbed and she rubbed it absentmindedly with her right thumb.
Potions saw them all paired up this time, each placed in front of brass cauldrons. Hermione found herself paired with Malfoy, since Theo had arrived late and was seated next to Padma and no one else had wanted to go near Malfoy with his brooding glower and his chequered past. Nott’s time keeping was probably one of the few things he actually had to work on with any real effort.
They looked down the ingredients list as Slughorn bumbled about, and she shot Malfoy a quick look. He had already worked out what it was they were brewing, if the smirk lingering at the corner of his surprisingly full lips was anything to go by.
“I’ll grind up the dried leaping toadstools if you strip the gillyweed,” she ventured and Malfoy looked up at her, that smirk still there and growing slightly under her gaze. He raised one icy blond eyebrow at her. “What?” she chirped, feeling her face heat. Had she said something stupid? Offensive? Godric-forbid… incorrect?
“‘Strip the gillyweed’ sounds like a euphemism,” he muttered, still smiling, but he picked up the little rat’s tail of a plant and placed it on his chopping board. As his long fingers closed around the handle of the pairing knife and he steadied the gillyweed with his right hand, she caught a glimpse of the signet ring he wore on the little finger of - unconventionally - his right hand. Of course; he was left handed. Something about that fact made her throat go dry, though she couldn’t articulate why not. Neville was also left handed, and that didn’t send her cardiovascular system into overdrive. Draco did have beautiful hands, she thought, all pale skin and long, slender fingers, and immediately bit her lips together in shocked horror, eyes widening a little.
What?!
The blush she’d been holding back through sheer force of will burst across her cheeks like a broken dam as his words crashed though her mind, and she reached for the little bowl of dried toadstools and began to grind them to a fine powder with the pestle and mortar. The thought of Draco Malfoy making an innuendo based joke - and a sexual innuendo joke too - in her presence was actually quite funny upon reflection and it was ridiculous to be embarrassed about it. “You know,” she said without looking up, still blushing and still mashing the dessicated toadstools with the pestle, “There’s a muggle country dance called ‘strip the willow’. Wonder if they… stem from the same place.”
He paused, his delicate fingers having stripped the outer layer of the gillyweed off to reveal the jelly-like substance inside which would then be scraped out, rather like the insides of a vanilla pod. “Really, Granger?” he drawled with sarcastic, affected interest that made her stomach churn a little. He wasn’t being cruel, but it was obvious that he thought her comments inane. “What a mine of useless information you are.”
Her shoulders dropped with - relief? Surely not disappointment? - and she looked away and continued to crush the toadstools to a fine powder without speaking.
The tension between them grew like acrid potion fumes until after the end of the class, when Slughorn had awarded ten points each to Gryffindor and Slytherin for their combined efforts.
Malfoy looked up as she gathered her belongings into her bag, sliding off the stool, straightening her skirt and blouse, and preparing to head to the library for her free period. She had some last minute Charms homework to finish. “Granger,” he called quietly. She stilled at the sound of her name on his lips and looked up at him through thick, dark lashes. He swallowed visibly. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine, Malfoy,” she said and turned to go.
“No, it’s not. It was inappropriate, and…” a slight blush dusted his high, snowy cheekbones. “…And it was… insensitive of me to imply that… that a knowledge of muggle information is useless.”
“Oh,” she said. Oh indeed. “I… I actually hadn’t even thought of it that way. Don’t worry about it anyway, Malfoy. I’ll see you in Charms this afternoon.”
Nott actually tossed her a crooked smile as he moved over to join Draco, and she heard a soft thump and a winded ‘oof’ as one of them presumably punched the other in the shoulder. She had no idea who had done the hitting, but she thought it best not to turn it into a spectacle and look.
With no classes until Charms that afternoon, she had fully intended to go to the library but now as she emerged from the slightly befuddling atmosphere of the Potions dungeons, she couldn't face the thought of being cooped up inside any longer. She could do the homework over lunch. Heck, she could probably do it while taking a nap.
Making up her mind, she hurried up the stairs from the dungeons and then paused on the threshold of the entrance hall, for a moment seeing two courtyards through the open doorway - one in her memory and one with her eyes. Taking a deep, steadying breath, she forced herself to relax and open her eyes. It was over. There were no piles of rubble, no corpses, no… him.
The day was surprisingly warm for late September in Scotland, and the low sun kissed the heather-tipped mountains around the school, painting them a vibrant purple beneath their gilded peaks. The waters of the lake would be glittering invitingly off to the south of the castle. A breeze wafted over the grounds, bringing with it the scent of damp pine and water weed. Everything was peaceful again and she scarcely dared believe it.
Without even returning to Gryffindor tower to ditch her bag, or glancing back to convince herself to go back to the library, she kicked her feet into motion again and headed out through the grounds, taking herself almost unthinkingly to the place where she and Harry and Ron had often gone when feeling wobbly about something.
Hagrid’s hut sat nestled squat as a mushroom on the edge of the Forbidden Forest, its small pumpkin patch guarded by the most fearsome and terrible of guard dogs - the slobbery, and now rather aged, Fang. The moment he saw her, he gave a low, broken bay and came lolloping stiffly over, his ashy-grey coat shimmering in the beautiful sunshine. “Hey there, Fang!” she laughed fondly as he joined her and leapt up onto his hind legs, his giant, muddy paws on her shoulders, trying to lick her face.
“Fang! Get down!” Hagrid bellowed from the doorway of his hut. “For goodness’ sake, mind yer manners, boy,” he added but the dog payed him very little attention.
“Down, Fang,” she said, pushing him gently and scourgifying the mud from her uniform and the slobber from her cheek with a shudder. “Good boy.”
He woofed softly and stalked at her heel like a huge, black lion as she approached Hagrid’s hut and the enormous man stepped outside to greet her. “Hermione!” he boomed, beetle-black eyes shining. “Ah, but it’s good to see yeh. C’mere,” and he opened his enormous arms wide.
Without hesitation, she stepped into his embrace and let him hug her. The touch brought a sea of emotions welling up inside her. With her parents obliviated and Harry and Ron absent, no one had given her so much as a hug in weeks, and the sudden comfort it brought reduced her almost to tears. In the past seven years, Hagrid had become something of an uncle to them all; huge, protective, and fiercely loyal. Now it felt like he was all she had in all the world. She knew it wasn’t true, but as she fought off tears, it certainly felt that way.
“What brings you here?” he asked when he released her.
She shrugged, turning away and swallowing her feelings in favour of kneeling and petting Fang’s floppy ears. “Wanted to get away from the castle for a bit, I suppose,” she said carefully. “I havent had much time to come and see you - and you, Fang,” she said when he barged his big nose into her hand. “How are you both?”
“Oh, we’re fine, we’re fine,” he said, clearly seeing straight through her words, but letting her be for now. “Lots to keep us busy, eh boy?” he asked the dog, who just wagged his bull whip tail a few times and whined quietly. “You wanna sit out here on the logs?” he asked her, indicating a few tree trunks that had been sliced in half to leave a flat top and arranged around an outside fire pit, “Or you wanna come in?”
Hermione’s eyes took in the sky with its fluffy silver clouds, punctuated occasionally with a flash of blue, and said, “Outside for now, I think, thank you.”

fic writer tag game
tagged by @randomingoftherandomness ty!!!
AO3 name: janie_tangerine
Fandoms: asoiaf/got (currently active regularly), the witcher (sticking to reading/writing fic for now but I’m planning on being somewhat active in that sense), dark tower/iron fist/bastille day/deadwood (not active because there’s no audience at any given time for three of them and with IF I need to be in the mood but like... I can become active in a moment if there’s the need xD), spn/lost/mcu that’s not IF/tvd (probably not going there anymore but it’s been a nice ride and might revisit I MEAN I REVISITED WITH TVD SO), various others I can write for occasionally which are all on the fandoms and ships page
Number of fics: 477 on ao3 but if I crossposted the lost/spn fic I have on lj that I still haven’t managed to import we’d be at 600 at least not counting the stuff I wrote on tumblr that I should crosspost but eh a lot
Fic I spent the most time on: lmao some flowers bloom dead, that’s because I still haven’t finished it
Fic I spent the least time on: anything under 2k was probably written in twenty minutes tops
Longest fic: sticking to ao3, in the darkness on the edge of town (asoiaf, jb, 102k hahahahahahaha)
Shortest fic: in which Robert Baratheon really, really hates pigeons (asoiaf, robert & ned + ned/cat, 568 words)
Most hits: I'll be the frosting to your cupcake, wench (asoiaf, jaimebrienne) which is at 54431 and I’m still in complete awe of it
Most kudos: five people who didn’t believe Ned Stark for one second about Jon’s paternity and one who did (asoiaf, ned + jon + various others) which is at 3437 and I’m honestly flattered that many people found it that funny xD
Most comment threads: and give all the love that you have in your soul (asoiaf, jaimebrienne + jonc/rhaegar & omc) at 216, understandable as it was like eight chapters spread over six months of me agonizing over how much I hate writing timetravel XD
Most bookmarks: more like the man you were meant to be (asoiaf, jb + jaime & cat, jaime & jon, jaime & ned & various others) at 1367 which I’m v. glad about that fic fluff I’m 100% proud of xD.
Total word count:  3806645 (with good peace of everyone who ever told me I was snobbish towards fanfic back in the day xD)
Favourite fic I wrote: I don’t wanna pick favorites because honestly they’re all my children but if I had to pick one it’s in the darkness on the edge of town for various reasons which we can sum up in I wouldn’t change a word of it and that usually doesn’t happen X°D
Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: there’s a few I’ve wanted to sequel and I def. need to finish sfbd (one day) but like atm your best bet is that I’m going to add part three to that series I somehow started where geralt likes wearing dresses and more opera singers au xD rewrite... not really because I don’t have the patience for it, if I don’t like something enough to share/I know I can rewrite it I don’t post it xD
Share a bit of a WIP or a story idea you’re planning on:
I haven’t technically written shit these last two days and I should rectify but for sharing ideas... I need to do part four and five of her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you ie the jaimebrienne witcher fusion as in I need to find a way to rework the last wish so I can have yennefer!catelyn in it with some sense and I also want to have pod being the resident child surprise but I can’t have it like in canon for obvious reasons so I’m still plotting, also AGAIN I SHOULD FINISH SFBD AND THE TARG TELENOVELA NOW IF ONLY MY CRACK MUSE CAME BACK FOR GOOD (but for the targ telenovela it’s all on here under its tag lol) and I could do a bit more of the soulmates hearts thing but I should see, anyway since I want to give you a WIP too let me see ah well have part of the next sfbd chapter that has been in the works since nanowrimo 2018 which one day I’ll hopefully finish kdslg have at it
“Lannister,” Robb interrupts, “I think everyone knows. If you want to say he’s your son —”
“Fair, fair. Well, before I left, he wasn’t… relishing his position, so to speak,” he sighs. “Actually, he was downright hating it. Cersei pretty much always ignored his existence but now she can’t, of course, since she thinks she can rule through him, and as much as she never really let me near him if not for the bare necessary…”
“She didn’t?”
“She figured someone might have asked starting questions if I had any relationship with any of them,” he says, and now he sounds bitter, as if he rues having let her. “I — he really has no stakes in this war and he didn’t even want that position.” He takes in a breath. “The lady and I, we might have discussed what to do after this is over.”
“What’s your plan?”
“Going back to her island for a while, take a well-deserved rest, and other things that you really don’t need to get concerned about. But I was wondering, after we’re done in King’s Landing, would you be amenable to send Tommen there if we come with you to the Wall, until we come back?” He’s staring at Robb with tired green eyes that for once don’t seem to be making fun at him or anyone. “I know it would mean —”
“I don’t think it’s undoable,” Robb tells him, if anything because he can hear that he sounds as if his sister didn’t let him have a relationship with Tommen, maybe he wants to, and if he wants to bring him to Tarth where he’s supposed to go following the woman he loves or so it seems, it’s not hard to imagine why he’s asking this. “He’s young and he hasn’t been anything like Joffrey as far as we know, we can just say that if he gives up any claim on the throne he can go with you, as you would be his closest relative willing to house him, and I highly doubt a Targaryen king would want you in his guard. But you were planning to leave it anyway, weren’t you?”
“His Grace is very perceptive,” Lannister says, sounding relieved. “Very well then. I — thank you,” he says, and then he turns on his back and leaves the room as well.
Robb sure as the seven hells had not foreseen this turn of events, but he’s not going to be the person complaining about it.
“If he is thanking you I guess anything might happen at this point,” Theon says after neither of them speaks for a long moment, and Robb has to laugh at that, some. It was funny, after all.
