What Jurassic World: Dominion should have been about

(Because I’ve watched not only Dominion but also a Jurassic movies marathon last weekend on TV. So I got dinosaurs on the brain lol. And while I enjoyed Dominion in theaters, the more I think about it, the less the story makes sense, and didn’t deliver on the DINOSAURS IN OUR WORLD plotline we deserved).

Here we go!

Prologue. 65 million years ago, dinosaurs live their best lives, wild and free. We witness a fight between the T. Rex and Giganotosaurus. Giga wins and kills the T. Rex. 65 million years later, after the events of Fallen Kingdom, the T. Rex attacks a drive-in theatre, causing panic and chaos.

(AKA we keep the Prologue that Universal released on Youtube a few months ago. Because it’s awesome. Seriously, go check it out if you can!)

We see the NowThis segment on TV, with a little more scenes that weren’t already in the Dino Tracker added. Just to keep things fresh.

Ellie Sattler, Alan Grant and Ian Malcolm are all called as dinosaur experts to investigate dinosaur attacks in this new Jurassic World. We see the dinosaurs attack random people (like in the short film Battle at Big Rock that is also on Youtube and that is also awesome). Ellie, Alan and Ian go to investigate.

Meanwhile, Owen Grady, Claire Dearing and Maisie Lockwood are living off the grid in the house Owen built himself during and after the events of Fallen Kingdom. He’s been keeping track of his velociraptor Blue’s whereabouts, especially since she had a baby and he feels responsible for their safety.

When Blue’s baby gets kidnapped by poachers, it’s up to Owen, Claire and Maisie, as a family, to save Beta.

Ellie, Alan and Ian eventually discover that Lewis Dodgson, the man who hired them to investigate the dinosaur attacks, the owner of the company BioSyn, is cooking up a new dino in their lab: the Giga Indotosaur. The genetically-engineered dinosaur can track down dinos in the wild. BioSyn can then swoop in, capture the dinosaurs Giga Indotosaur hunts, and “protect our fragile ecosystems from these new apex predators” as Dodgson puts it.

(Or to sell the dinosaurs. That works too.)

The kicker? Our characters never go to the Biosyn lab. The audience sees some scenes there, including the return of InGen’s Dr. Henry Wu, who is still making genetically-engineered dinosaurs, but the crew never goes to another lab in another park. Been there, done that.

Owen, Claire and Maisie, meanwhile, bust out the poaching / dinosaurfighting ring, and try to save Beta. They fail. The road also leads back to BioSyn, as they learn by sneaking in the poaching ring, since BioSyn needs Blue’s DNA to make Giga Indotosaur more compliant. But again, Owen, Claire and Maisie don’t go to BioSyn. Then they are disturbed by another dino attack. They escape and we see the big action scene in Malta. Which was the best part of Dominion.

Of course, it’s not common knowledge that Blue’s (and by extension, Beta’s) DNA was mixed up with T. Rex DNA during the events of Fallen Kingdom. So when Lewis Dodgson adds her DNA to Giga Indotosaur (and goes behind Dr. Wu’s back, because he refuses to work with Beta), it, ahem, fucks shit up.

The Giga Indotosaur escapes BioSyn and starts to wreak havoc on the dinosaurs in the wild. Many who had been captured by BioSyn, including Beta, are also released, and it’s pure chaos on the streets of New York City (or pick whatever big city that Hollywood loves). It’s up to Ellie, Alan, Ian, Owen, Claire and Maisie to deal with the Giga Indotosaur and save the day.

Of course, Giga Indotosaur is killed, thanks to Beta and the T. Rex who gets her revenge, and everything eventually goes back to this strange, new normal. By the end, Ellie, Alan and Ian are interviewed by the United States Congress about the events with BioSyn and the future of dinosaurs in our world and Owen, Claire and Maisie bring Beta back to her mother.

Sprinkle in old characters, like John Hammond’s grandchildren, Tim and Lex, Ian’s daughter Kelly, Claire’s old friends Zia and Franklin, and Owen’s old friend Barry, and add new characters like Kayla Watts and Ramsey Cole. And Dr. Wu probably gets his comeuppance. Probably.

And that’s it. You got a movie.

this is such a solid show so far, i dont even know what to say. episodes feel long, but they're not boring. they're lingering, they last. it takes everyday emotions and everyday experiences and lets them play out; it confers importance to the small things. the story and overall plot-per-ep is simple yet genuine, and everything and every character feels so lived-in. i like the mix of fun and serious, i like the steady growth and trust between mork and day and the little buds of tension starting to bloom. i love the way the camera brings things to the forefront of the viewer's attention, the way expressions are shot and how long those shots are allowed to last on screen...you really feel the emotion coming through, and it really impresses me from both an acting and directing standpoint.....im just rambling but the jist of it is that i'm really enjoying this

#*gestures wildly* p'aof makes this shit look effortless #he comes up with the most original things and then makes them feel justified and ordinary #like the inflatable dinosaurs - oh yeah those were from a costume party years ago #its all just to show day having a little fun and i love how that...gets attention #like theyre not *trying* to build the romance theyre just telling a story #does that even make sense??? bc obviously the story is building the romance #it just all feels really natural and believable even though its only been 3 eps #it feels like its been longer #the characters are already changing but it doesnt feel like its moving fast #MAN. MAN!#last twilight #jimmy and sea are really selling it and so is everyone in the supporting cast #it all feels very entangled while still giving the most focus to the mains -you really see the story from their perspectives #IM. IM ALMOST MAD ABOUT IT P'AOF MAKES THIS SHIT LOOK EASY

I know I keep posting about Casey and yes I will continue to do so.

I'm so used to my favorites only being in a limited number of episodes and only showing up when the plot called for it. It's so fun for Case to just show up and have a good time without the story absolutely dictating it. I think she was in every single episode in Season 1.

Like, she'll just pop up to give Lunella a good friendly chat. Or maybe they hang out together. Or maybe she'll use her talents to try to help Lu through her problems. Or maybe they work together to beat up the bad guys. She's not really limited to a role or narrative and that's pretty cool.

#still posting about #moon girl and devil dinosaur #and especially #casey calderon #idk maybe i just need to have more main characters as my fave #i just keep expecting the libby treatment where eventually she will be sidelined for a few episodes to focus on something else #but that hasn't happened yet like they're putting a conscious effort into including her as much as possible

back from the barbie movie and I certainly have Thoughts on what the movie was doing but overall I do think it's worth seeing! it's fun

#☢️.txt #spoilers in tags!#i think what they did with ken is actually really fascinating and while i do get why the movie doesnt focus on his motivations #or the fantasy politics of barbieland #i AM personally interested in them #like his frustration is coming from a legitimate place and the movie does acknowledge that both barbie (margot) and the barbies overall were #Not In The Right and its not the actual solution to the issue of feminism #in the same way that the movie acknowledged that barbie didnt solve feminism and in many cases ended up playing into #the very ideas that prevent women from pursuing the jobs barbie is often shown in #im sure ppl will critique the movie for not going far enough but like. i dont think their point was to make a massive statement?#so much as it was to make a campy blockbuster that gently acknowledges the ways people can so often feel left out #its not the feminist piece of a generation so much as it is a love letter to barbie that acknowledges how shes #an inherently flawed consumerist brand. but one thats deeply cherished by generations and has left a massive pink stamp on our culture #(its probably worth noting that i have generally positive memories of barbie)#(despite being a weird fat kid i never personally felt alienated by barbie and my memories are extremely fond)#(i didnt like baby dolls bc. i never have liked kids but barbie was a fantasy in sparkly dresses)#(she was married to my dinosaur toys. ive always known what im about yes)#my favorite barbies were swan lake a halloween witch barbie and a halloween ghost barbie #(also idk is this an autistic thing for me to only learn most young girls compared their bodies to barbie at like 14?)#(like it just never dawned on me to compare my looks to a toy tbqh. i was more upset by the actual lack of clothing in my size)

Yeah uhh I feel like the major problem with Tubehell Challenge 'The Mimic' story is uhh fitting it in a small space. I can make The Storyteller more interesting, but because Andrea couldn't fill the space of a 19-20k story, I have only 16570 to work with, a lot of which can be cut out given it's mostly guff about nothing and Burrows talking about scuba diving with pretty models. There's 19207 words in The Mimic, a lot of which is loading chekov's gun they never fire and scrambling to make it 'scary' so... hm...

I can do it for sure, it's just a case of building Edwin, David and Mimic's relationships properly in a short time frame. I have some structure ideas that will help with that, and also gonna shimmy around which important parts are revealed in which story, so that should give me a lot more room to work in The Mimic, but also further limits The Storyteller so... hmmm... I'll know for sure how clever I'm going to have to be with screentime when I actually start it I think.

This post is just to say that this is going to be interesting to figure out lmao in case you were wondering how it was going

There needs to be a unified tag for fantasy pirate/nautical aesthetic stuff bc "pirates" is bombarded with specific media franchises, "piracy" is all memes about digital piracy, and "piratecore" is about what you'd expect.

I’ve been offered the internship I really wanted <3

I moved to North Dakota kind of on a whim with the dream of being a paleontologist, but this position puts me actually in the paleontology collections (literally my dream job long term) so like. Damn. I guess I’m doing this. I might be able to actually become a paleontologist for real.

#I’m so excited I honestly didn’t dare anticipate getting this position but I really wanted it #I moved to North Dakota so I could work with the dinosaurs and I’m fucking doing it y’all #well. okay. technically I get to work with them to decide what formation and type of fossil I will work with #and if it’s an option I will probably choose Pierre shale marine invertebrates #because god i fucking love ammonites #but in theory I could choose to do dinosaurs #I just. don’t know shit about vertebrate skeletons #but invertebrates are so cool and I love them but other people don’t love them as much #so it might be useful for them to have somebody who wants to focus on them #I’m just very excited because this feels like a step in the right direction and if this goes well my chances of getting into grad school go #way up as well #except I think I want to focus on the actual history part of museum studies in grad #more diverse education background would set me up for more diverse plausible hiring options right out of school #also I love history I would totally be a history major if I didn’t also love geology and want the stability
