Song of the Day - “Just One of Those Things”

Today is the 70th anniversary of a recording session at Hollywood Studios in LA … April 7th, 1954...

for Frank Sinatra’s 8th studio album “Swing Easy”…which would get released in August.

But today was the first of two recording sessions, and is particularly notable for being the birth of one of the great pairings in music - Sinatra with arranger Nelson Riddle... a marriage made in swing heaven … this was their first collaboration with Riddle as the arranger...

The band was Harry Edison on trumpet, Tommy Pederson, Ray Sims, and George Roberts on trombones, Skeets Herfurt, Mahlon Clark, Babe Russin, Eddie Miller, and Joe Koch on saxes, Bill Miller on piano, Allan Reuss on guitar, Joe Comfort on bass, Alvin Stoller on drums, and Frank Flynn on the vibes…

Of the handful of songs recorded today, this one, Cole Porter’s “Just One of Those Things” is the perfect slice of this new duo’s magic.

The whole album is delicious, but this is the sweetest of the cuts… truly a trip to the moon on gossamer wings…

Headcanon that The Butcher and Chuck the Evil Sandwich Making Guy are the go to catering guys for any Villains Society social event. Everybody loves a good barbecue and people would kill for Chuck's sandwiches. (Plus the sandwiches provide a vegan option for Ms Question)

Once Rhyme joins, she gets roped in to provide chilled drinks. She has way too much fun creating a menu and giving every drink a rhyming name. Highlights include Robbery Strawberry, Felony Melon-y and Crime Lime. (There are no orange drinks, for obvious reasons) For some strange reason, the villains can't keep a straight face when they read the menu out loud.

Tommy Tucker assured his place in American Music’s tapestry when he released the Top Twenty Hit, “Hi-Heel Sneakers” in 1964. Recorded in New York City and leased to Chess Record’s rocker & roll subsidiary, Checker. Funkier than a fashion abortion should be, it’s got a Jimmy Reed-esque loping rhythm that’s damn infectious. It’s been covered by everyone, ripped off by everyone else, and a response song from Chicago Soul Queen Sugar Pie DeSanto, “Slip-In Mules (No Hi-Heel Sneakers) reached 48 on the Billboard charts.

This song has nothing to do with that. A heavy-duty dose of bluesy soul, Tucker sounds like an entirely different singer. His voice booms and the song’s almost a gospel number as it looks in desperation at every way the world can run one down. This can’t be the best of all possible worlds, in other words, so it might as well be a solid jam.

that feeling when you meet someone new, for any reason, and they first see your scars. and even if you’re lucky and they don’t explicitly say anything or make any big deal over it you notice. you see that little flick of their eyes to your wrist(or where ever) and then away for a minute, almost embarrassed, and a quick shift in their look that’s so quick you’d think you were imagining it if you didn’t see it every time this happens. pity? fear? disgust? confusion? regret they’re talking to you at all? something there just for a heartbeat and then it goes away and they seem to act like nothing happened but you know from that moment on they won’t ever look at you quite the same

Not sure why but all of a sudden I’ve been hit with a wave of depression out of no where! Don’t get me wrong, my moods up and down a lot lately but felt fine all day and within the last 30 or so mins I’ve just felt all flat and blah mentally. Maybe it’s the thought of getting up at 5am for work in the office tomorrow, perhaps it’s my ever failing art business and the lack of vision and motivation to turn it round recently or maybe I’m just tired and lonely. Who knows because I sure as fuck don’t! Got 1 hour of work left to go, then maybe it’s food, blanket and hibernate on the sofa till time to go bed! Ugh!
