Ancient Tidings - Page 58
"Under your guidance have the 4 regions been pushed back from the brink of another bloody war, of indifference to their fellow changeling, of apathy towards rival hives. And under you, Erios believes, will they continue to live and nurture this harmony."
Sapphire, Lycormo, Autumna. Their hives benefitted directly or indirectly from Flux's leadership as king of the East.

the photo you took of the detail of the golden reflection of the sun on the wet sand, with a wave rolling on in, is really beautiful and thoughtful. it moved me a little bit; i got a warm feeling in my chest looking at it. thank you for sharing it with us!
One of the mornings, my sister and my mother joined me for a dawn walk down the beach. At one point, my mother asked how the whole scene made us feel---the rush of the ocean, the sky paling, the quiet even of the other people gathered on the beach to watch the sunrise with us. Thoughtful? she asked. Does it make you think about the future?
And I answered very honestly that I couldn't stop thinking about how---this has been happening for so much longer than any of us could fathom. It was a deeply ancient thing, the sun rising over the sea; there had to have been thousands upon millions of mornings where where it happened just like this, whether anyone was there to witness it or not.
(This prompted a brief digression into how old the ocean actually was---after some back and forth, we decided that the ocean became the ocean when it was oxygenated, which according to my scientist sister is approximately 500 million years ago. On the timescale of the universe, the ocean is a baby. Humanity, though, has never existed without it.)
My sister added that when she looked at the sky and the waves, she was struck by how it would keep happening, long after we were gone---not just the three of us, but the whole human race. The vacation homes and the carefully-cultivated white sand beach might drown, collapse, or return to wilderness, but nothing else would change, because the sea and the sky were indifferent to our existence.
My mother, who clearly had not been expecting 6:55am meditations on humanity’s smallness and insignificance in the face of the universe, gave up.
All this to say...we have an almost embarrassingly short period of time in which to notice how beautiful the world is. And the awareness of that beauty, unlike the rest, will not outlast us. So we might as well cling to what we can.

(Start) (Previously) (Next)
After fully repairing the net, Merry tells an unusually quiet Tide to consider their offer until next meeting. He gives them a small wave before parting ways.
They decide not to talk to the Elders on the matter until they get an answer from Tide; it'd be a bad idea to spill the shells unnecessarily.
---
Next day, Merry is getting ready in their little cave. After braiding their hair, they swim out to the communal gathering for a morning meal where some families and the Elders are already seated. A few mers are flitting around, setting out dishes of food. Looking around, Merry doesn't see any of the Open ocean mers. Have they already left?
They greet mers in passing on their way to one of the lone Elders in the back.
"Good morning, Elder Jewel!" Merry chirps.
"Oh good morning little Seastar!" The old mer chirps back.
"Did our guests leave before morning meal?"
Elder Jewel smiles, it feels strained for some reason. Merry shrugs it off.
"Yes, they have business elsewhere but they will return tomorrow. Come, have something to eat. You need the energy for the day ahead."
And she meant it.
The Elders keeps giving Merry tasks over their usual ones; coral pruning, weaving bags, gathering scallops. Merry huffs as they place another scallop inside their bag, they won't be able to gather anything for Tide at this rate!
Coral is nowhere to be seen either. They'd ask her to hand in the bag, allowing them to avoid recieving any more tasks.
Merry inspects the scallop in their hand. What if they keep collecting a ton of them and give a portion of it to Tide? It's probably a too high shell-to-meat ratio as he shoves them in whole. They groan.
A few hours after high sun, Merry manages to finish a chore without getting another thanks to a Moonsent distraction (kids fighting over a rock)! They hurriedly leave the reef with their trusty harvest bag.
The sun is setting when they return. Merry tiredly places the bag inside their storage to keep it safe from any hungry creatures. Taking a short moment to collect their breath, they turn to swim home.
Only to almost bump into Elder Jewel; Merry barely manages to stifle their surprised trill.
"El- Elder Jewel!" Merry nervously squeaks, willing their fins to relax again. "What brings you here at this late hour? You need something from the storage?"
"No, I'm here for you."
Not another chore pleas-
"I wanted to let you know our appreciation for everything you do for this community. That I am so proud of you." The Elder mer places a hand on Merry's cheek. "But even the strongest of mers can't make it in the ocean alone. We'll make it through this current together." She pats their cheek a few times before retiring for the night.
Merry stares at her retreating form, bewildered.
What was that? Feeling uneasy, they decide to try and meet Tide earlier tomorrow.

A king can normally feel out his subjects and other changelings, though usually other changelings outside of a hive have a much weaker link.
