I'm still confused about Verna.. I thought she was a demon?? Because why would Death be going around making a bunch of deals with people? After Verna told Pym she decided to go "topside" I thought she was some kind of crossroads demon since it implies she came from below (hell)
Oh! I feel you, and I struggled with that a lot too. She does seem a lot like a demon. I'm not saying I'm 100% correct in my thinking either, but here's why I personally think she's Death. Kind of a long post, sorry. I hope I make myself clear, but feel free to follow up!
So, Verna. An anagram for Raven, that much is established. Ravens are wonderful - symmetrical even - creatures. Bringers of death in a wide understanding. Bringers of good luck in many cultures. The duality is amazing. To me, that also leans majorly into the theme of death being a concept of duality: an enemy for some, a friend for others. Each greets her differently. I'm not talking about the characters here, but people in general.
There's a proverb I came across a while ago that reads 'Death is a great leveller'. Meaning, everyone's equal before her. You have no leverage or buffer against death, and it doesn't matter if you're poor or blindly, feverishly, grotesquely rich (like our folks here). Everyone pays the last bill. For everyone, there's a day of reckoning. It's a major theme with the show, at least. Verna also says 'Buy now, pay the bill later' - although it can still read very demonic, I agree.
She's obviously ancient, and I was leaning toward the demon theory based on all of her talking. Yet - she also keeps ranting about Egypt and pyramids and Cleopatras and such. What's the one thing with Egyptians everyone knows of? They honored death. Death may have been a bigger part of their lives than life itself. The Usher Twins' obssession with all things Egyptian, antiquities, jewelry, swords and such, plays a nice parallel here too, because they're just collectors. They have no grain of honor for the real thing, for what these things are tied to. Kind of a nice thought, I guess.
Anyway, back to Verna. She says on multiple occasions how intrigued she is with us, 'adorable little things'. She saw the pyramids, the expeditions, and she wanted to see what else we do, she wanted to see what Roderick and Madeline will do (in her own words). It's all an experiment to her. She makes an offer just to see what we, people, do.
Here's where my beef with a demon theory comes in. No demonic creature I could think of, be it an actual demon, a trickster, or something else, is that sincerely intrigued. Something something death loving life something something.
Demons, in my understanding, are most interested in winning the deal. They come up with incredible challenges, they enjoy torture, emotional or physical, they never let anyone win. Verna has never once expressed this. Quite the opposite. She gives everyone a chance to step back. Even when the ink has dried and everything's decided, each Usher sibling is conditioned to make a choice: push forward, or step back. Neither of them steps back. Neither of them takes a long hard look at themselves (except Tamerlane, both literally haha and figuratively, as she's the only one to have realized how lost she was in her way - just at the end, when it didn't really matter anymore, but still). Verna is kind to those she takes (sincere pet names, regrets of having to do it this way, making sure they know it's not personal, etc). She grieves with them, just before. Grieving - 'The Raven' being about an expression of grief and trauma - ravens as synonyms for death... you get the gist. Oh! Except Freddie - cause Freddie struck a cord. Infuriated her. So he doesn't get an expressed choice. And he would've blown it like coke anyway, so meh.
And then Arthur Pym. Oh, Arthur Pym. I honestly couldn't imagine a demon kneeling and thanking someone who's refused them.
About Arthur Pym, by the way. It's the one story I hadn't reread, and I should have, it turns out! haha Anyway, a few notes about his travels:
In the story, Arthur Pym is expressedly afraid of white color (North Pole, yada yada, white being the absense of colors/life, and the absense of life is death).
Verna enumerates the moments she witnessed of his travels. Someone getting left in Sahara. Someone getting shot in the Arctic. Something bad that was done to an Inuit woman. Why would she follow Arthur so closely? She didn't know him, he wasn't her favorite. I think it's because she came to collect those deaths. If she is death, she would've been exactly there, where people died. She would have also seen Arthur not partaking.
Aaaaaaaand it makes her 'You saw me' line sound better, because he had sure seen death along his travels.
I think the part about a place of out-of-time, out-of-space creatures and hollow Earth was a bit unnecessary, BUT I can try and tie it in this way:
It showed us how Arthur might have coped with what he saw, and he 'saw a lot', even in his 70s it's difficult for him to recall, and it made him think of humanity as a virus, literally;
He might have thought up that ethereal realm simply because he was in an expedition? Exhaustive conditions for both body and spirit? Traumatic experiences? If he saw Death, he might have cloaked it in his mind to cope with it, thus came his stories;
Verna going 'topside' may just mean that she had to go take a look herself, actually be willingly present for the events - to see the brave little humans conquer the earth. 'Topside', as in, 'visible, present, participating'. If Death exists, I doubt it bothers with our boring human realm but lives downunder, among all threads that weave the world.
So that's that on Arthur Pym.
A few other references my mind is too exhausted to tie in nicely:
Death takes Lenore. THE Lenore from 'The Raven' (mostly) and 'Lenore' (secondary). That happened. Also, death talking to a child of life? Regretting having to take her? Not very demonic of dear ol' Verna, in my opinion.
Her mourning veil, her last toasts to the Ushers at the cemetery? Demons don't tend to grieve their players. Demons don't respect and love them enough, and 'what is grief, if not love persevering'?
Death is the last threshold. Before death, we look upon our legacy (major theme with the show), we remember our losses and loves (Annabel Lee!!!!! love the poem, brilliantly done), we get heavy with regrets. We face death as an enemy & fight, like Madeline did. As a friend, like Arthur did. We confess, like Roderick did. All that is too significant to me overall.
And the last thing. It's Edgar Allan Poe. The whole Death tribute is a giant, incredible, thought-through-to-the-bits hommage to his literature where Death, figuratively and literally, takes the throne.
I hope I managed to express myself alright there. Thanks if you read it through, and as I said before, feel free to follow up or elaborate on some ideas. There are oceans to discuss. <3

Gods and Men || Jake Lockley
Summary: You are an avatar and find yourself pulled towards a man who shares the same power as you do.  Warnings: 18+ only, violence, unprotected sex, sassy reader WC: 2.6k
Tumblr media
To some Konshu is ancient but to others, like Iah, he is still an infant. Iah was the god of the moon long before Konshu was given life and his power infinitely greater, until he decided to retire with the other old gods of Egypt and let the next generation take reign. His spirit would still be resting in the dark side of the moon if it weren’t for the terrible tour guide letting you wander off from the group. You had stumbled across Iah’s physical body’s resting place and accidentally became his avatar when you touched his amulet.
“Find Konshu. He can put me back to sleep.”
“That’s all well and good but there’s 7 billion people on this planet now, how am I meant to find his avatar?” You groaned as you looked at Iah for answers.
“He may be weaker but he still holds the power of the moon. Feel its pull, like the tide, let it carry you to him.”
You rolled your eyes before closing them and spreading your arms wide, feeling Iah’s power rush through you. You could feel the oceans and seas, the rise and the fall of the tides. You could feel the moon itself waning in its cycle, the sun’s shadow cooling its surface as the earth eclipsed it. Then you felt it, a sensation of magnetism that was neither tide nor moon but something else entirely.
“Holy shit.” You laughed as you turned slowly around, the pull getting stronger until it eased off and you went back to its strongest point. “He’s that way, where is that? Cairo?”
“These lands used to be beautiful green fields, fools who chose to turn it to dust.” Iah grumbled as he wiped away the sand that had blown onto his postiche. “Start walking, the pull will get stronger the closer you get.”
“Do I really have to walk, can’t we fly or moonwalk?”
“Moonwalk?” Iah sighed with exasperation. “It’s called shadow walking. Do you listen to nothing I say?”
You shrugged and started walking in the direction your gut was telling you to go, ignoring his overbearing presence as he followed close behind. In all honesty you did listen to the god, at least most of the time, but he was just so easy to rile up that you couldn’t help teasing him. You liked to think it built rapport between you, even if he didn’t.
“What happens to me when you go back to sleep?” You asked as you felt the burn in your calves from hours of walking across sand dunes.
“You go back to your life, free of this burden.”
You didn’t like the sound of that. This was the most fun you had ever had and you couldn't deny that you liked the rush of power that came with being his avatar.
“Couldn’t you like…stay?” You asked pensively. “Would that really be so bad? We could totally just kick ass and become a hero. That’s an actual job nowadays, something I don’t have in this ‘life’ you speak of.”
“I am over 4000 years old. I retired so I do not have to work.”
“Alright Grandpa, but you wouldn’t have to do anything. You would just relax, sipping mai tais on the beach and I’ll do all the work.”
You were exhausted from walking and ready to collapse as the sun went down, grateful that the air was cooling quickly. Every piece of clothing clung to your skin that was drenched in sweat and you would have killed to have a drink of water but you were still miles from civilization. You had just taken a seat in the sand at the top of a dune when Iah looked up to the moon and raised his staff.
“Ready to moonwalk?”
“Are you telling me I could have just stayed exactly where we were and just waited until dark!” You hissed as you leapt to your feet and watched a veil of darkness erupt from his staff.
“I suppose we could have, but moving forward no matter how slowly is still progress.”
“Save the proverbs for someone who cares.” You growled as you stepped into the shadow wall and found yourself at the top of the great pyramid.
The scene unfolding was something you were not prepared for and you stared in awe at the giant Ammit and Khonshu fighting before you. You looked at Iah who was taking a seat on one of the huge bricks that made up the pyramid and waved your hand towards the fight he seemed to have no interest in.
“Um, hello, are we just going to ignore the dead bird losing to the crocodile?”
“Eh, he’ll be fine.” Iah chuckled and leant back leisurely to watch the young gods fight like it was a spectator sport. “I’d hate to think I chose a weakling to be my successor.”
Khonshu’s great grey beak turned in your direction and you felt the abyss of his eyes calling to you like the pull that drew you there before he turned to look at Iah. “I heard that old man.”
“Behind you!” You called out as Ammit opened her jaws wide and dove at Khonshu. “Come on, Iah, can I at least jump in?”
Iah dismissed you with a wave of his hand. “Do as you please, but remember you are only a meat suit and not invincible.”
“Wow, you should write for Hallmark.” You shot back as you leapt out from the pyramid, grabbing the material draping over Khonshu’s shoulder and sliding gracefully to the ground.
“These are my ceremonial robes, get your avatar under control, Iah.” Khonshu complained as you made your way towards Ammit.
Iah barked a laugh as he threw his staff like a spear, your fingers gripping it tightly before it carried you into the air. “I have accepted that she is beyond my control, much like yours I hear.”
The staff carried you towards its source of power and your skin began to glow as Iah’s force flowed through you, a white and gold threaded kaftan wrapping around you as it did. You looked down at the city below and released the staff, your cloak billowing out and letting you glide towards Ammit’s head. Just before you landed on her, you grabbed the khopesh hanging at your hip and used the force of your landing to bury the blade beneath her skin.
“Oh shit.” You cursed as the hard leathery crocodile skin snapped your sword and she snapped her head back, tossing you back up in the air as she opened her mouth ready to consume you.
Khonshu leapt forward and risked losing his own arm as he swiped you from her clutches, close enough that you saw your own reflection in her teeth before the slammed shut. He just managed to settle you on his shoulder before blocking Ammit’s attack and you gripped his robe tightly as they grappled.
“Hold tight, little one.” Khonshu warned before he surged forward on the offensive.
You could see Ammit’s power growing as her avatar gathered souls for her and soon she would over power Khonshu, she had already torn his staff from his grasp. You closed your eyes as you felt the strength of the moon above, moving it across the sky so that it was no longer waning but at its fullest and bathing you in its glow. Khonshu turned his beak to the sky as he felt his strength return only for Ammit to take the distraction and spear him in the chest with his own forked staff.
You winced as Khonshu growled in pain, his god form falling backwards as he tried to keep the staff from piercing through completely. There was no time to think as you slid down his chest and wedged yourself between the juncture of the staff, stopping it from going any further. You could barely breathe from the pressure but you knew it had saved the god as you felt his giant heart beat like a bass drum against you.
Your vision was dimming as Ammit began to drag Khonshu towards the pyramid, no doubt intending to end him, but just before it went dark you felt a tug on your ankle. Khonshu protected you as his arm fell to his side, your body tumbling across the dirt to rest in the shadows - darkness taking over.
“Thank you.”
Tumblr media
A curtain billowed in the breeze, the pyramids peeking through with every sway, and you sat up wondering how you got there. The ache in your head barely registered as you caught sight of an avatar coming out of the bathroom, his jeans hanging low on his hips and his shirt missing.
“Buenos días, querida.”
“Good morning.” You cleared your throat and looked around the room for any sign of Iah or the god this man represented but found neither.
He poured two cups of coffee from the pot that was resting on a service tray and carried one over to you, holding it out in offering.
“Gracias.” You murmured as you took it, sniffing to see if there was any obvious sign of poison but it just smelt like coffee and seemed to amuse him. “No offence but when I wake up to a half naked man I normally know their name. Who are you?”
“Jake Lockley.” He smiled with a dark and dangerous glint behind his eyes before he held his hand out.
“Y/n y/l/n.” You said as you went to shake his hand but he caught yours and lifted it to his lips. You felt the same pull as you had the night before and gasped. “You’re Khonshu’s avatar.”
“Sí.” He nodded and took a seat at the edge of the bed. “He was impressed with your espíritu, your fire.”
“Do you feel that?” You asked as you failed to concentrate on anything but the gravitational pull begging you to move closer to him.
“Sí, our power draws us together.” He nodded, holding his hand up, your own quickly meeting his palm to palm. “Like two flames burn brighter when joined.”
“That’s a terrible analogy.” Your laughter died out as he took the coffee cup back and your breath caught in your chest. “The fire burns out faster that way.”
Your mug was placed next to his beside the bed and you caught that look in his eyes once again, a cold chill that should have been a warning to run but instead it heated your core. Your fingers laced into his dark hair, tugging the short curls and bringing him closer as the magnetism left you at its whim.
He let himself fall over you, his hands catching his weight beside your head and his dark eyes were pools to a starry night. “Sigue siendo hermosa mientras dura.”
His suave voice melted your insides and you swore you could feel his breath igniting your skin as his lips scorched your neck.
“My Spanish isn’t that good.”
You sighed as your hands ran down his neck and across his chest. His skin was soft and warm but you could feel the strong muscles moving beneath the deceptive surface.
“The fire is still beautiful, no matter how long it burns.”
You were willing to let this fire consume you, even if it were only for a moment - you couldn’t even think about the recklessness, there was just an insatiable need. Your hands were already working at his jeans, popping the button as he tugged your shirt over your head. The rest of your clothes disappeared with hastily placed kisses and your back arched as he roughly kissed the length of your body, grazing his teeth over your skin to leave goosebumps in their wake.
You were so caught in the whirlwind of the moment you realised you didn’t even know what happened after you blacked out and you gasped as he nipped your thigh. “Did you kill Ammit?”
He rolled his eyes up to look at you, barely clinging to your sanity long enough to ask the question. “No, but I’ll take care of it after I take care of you.”
He pushed you back against the cool cotton sheets as he crawled up your body and you felt an innate trust in him, knowing he wouldn’t let Ammit plague this world again. Relaxing in his embrace, you submitted yourself to the pull and let him distract you from the chaos of avatar life.
Your skin flushed with more than the heat of the Egyptian air as he rolled over and pulled you on top, his hands falling to your hips as you rocked against him and elicited a string of Spanish you couldn’t comprehend. Your walls fluttered as his fingers dug into your hips and his eyes began to glow, the power rush flooding through you until your head tipped back with a cry of pleasure.
“That’s it, ven por papi.” Jake moaned as he felt your body tremble around him and your pussy clenched as you recognised the word for ‘daddy’.
“Oh fuck…” You cried when he almost lifted you off the bed as he thrust up and hit the depth that sent you over the edge.
You didn’t even have time to come down from your high before he rolled over and pulled your leg higher over his hip. His silvery, glowing eyes drank in the sight of your blissed out face until he buried himself and shuddered, his eyes slamming shut as he reached his own release and collapsed beside you. His eyes faded back to the dark brown that was almost the perfect match for his hair and he rested only a moment before sliding off the bed.
“Where are you going?” You asked as he grabbed his clothes and started to tug them on.
He buckled the belt on his jeans and leant over the bed to kiss you, his fingers lightly clutching your neck as he pulled you closer and felt the need to climb back in with you. He growled and fought his own desire, pulling away and taking a deep breath knowing he had already indulged too much.
“To kill Ammit.” He said coldly as he turned to the door and paused. “I have to end this.”
If he was expecting you to argue, he had a lot to learn about you because you had seen her power in the fight, and almost lost your life to her. “Good. Then, Jake, when you’re done you come find me.”
His lip curled up into a devilish smile and he gave you a small nod before disappearing out the door. Falling back to the bed, you felt his absence growing as the distance between you increased and knew if you needed you would be able to follow him across the universe blindfolded.
“You should be happy.” Iah huffed as he appeared in the window overlooking the pyramids. “After the mess with Harrow I have been reinstated to godhood.”
“So you get to stay.” You grinned, covering yourself with a sheet as you hopped off the bed. “That’s great.”
“I feared Khonshu would see two moon gods as a threat and have his avatar kill you. I came here to warn you.” He looked around the room and back at you. “I see that was futile.”
“Yeah, I think we are good, I did save Khonshu’s life too.” You grinned. “Not bad for a meatsuit, huh?”
Iah rolled his eyes, a small twitch at his lip the only sign he was starting to enjoy your attitude. “Not bad, but we still have some work to do before you try that again. Get dressed. We start now.”

Ptah-Hotep & ancient Precepts
Apart from the Book of the Dead, the oldest book of which there is record in the literature of Egypt, and one of the oldest in the known literature of the world, is a collection of Precepts, bearing the name of Ptah-Hotep. Their author was a viceroy or[15]governor of Egypt, and was a younger son of Assa, the seventh king of the 5th dynasty, whose reign began 3366 b.c. The Prisse papyrus, discovered at Thebes in 1856, and now in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, is said by its discoverer, Chabas, to be the oldest papyrus in existence, and to have been written about 2500 b.c.[2] This papyrus contains a copy of these Precepts of Ptah-Hotep, which have apparently retained their interest for Egyptian readers for nearly nine centuries, and which now, more than five thousand years after their first publication, have been issued, for the benefit of modern readers, in French and English versions.
The Precepts are characterized by simplicity, directness, high-mindedness, great refinement of nature, and a keen sense of humor, and they give to the reader a very pleasant impression of their noble author. The great importance laid by Ptah-Hotep upon courtesy of manner and of action recall to mind Lord Chesterfield, but the courtly Egyptian had a heart and convictions. English and American readers are under obligations to the Rev. H. D. Rawnsley not only for placing before them this antique and distinctively interesting production, but also for his excellent metrical versions of some of[16] the representative hymns of Ancient Egypt.[3] The original translation from the papyrus of the Precepts was made by P. Virey for Records of the Past. It is Virey’s impression that the Precepts were in part original with the Viceroy, and in part collected by him from older sources. In reading these pithy words of wise counsel of the shrewd and kindly old Egyptian, one naturally recalls the proverbs ascribed to King Solomon, the sayings of Confucius, and certain of the utterances of Socrates. I do not mean that Ptah-Hotep, on the strength of the fragmentary utterances that have come down to us, is to be ranked with these great teachers, but that it is interesting to note how early in literature favor was found for the form of expressing opinions, or of giving counsel in the form of maxims or proverbs. The proverbs of Solomon are said to have been written about 1000 b.c. The conversations of Confucius were held about 500 years later, and the utterances of Socrates were closed with his death, 399 b.c.

"Man, know yourself…and you shalt know the gods." ~ Ancient Egyptian Proverb
Moved by his father's pleas to the gods, Prince Atem sends up a prayer of his own. In response, a stranger from a mysterious land suddenly appears - a stranger that bears a strong resemblance to the prince and a copy of the Millennium Pendant around his neck. Is this 'Yugi' a harbinger of destruction or a beacon of hope? Could the two of them become allies, friends...or maybe something more?
Yugi had only wanted to help his other self find the answers he had been searching for, to push his selfish fears and insecurities aside and find the spirit's lost memories. He never expected to find himself flung back in time to Ancient Egypt, an honored guest of the Pharaoh Akhenamkhanen and his son, Prince Atem. Why had the Millennium Puzzle sent them here, what were they meant to accomplish, and how in the world were they supposed to get back home?

SUBLIME FREQUENCIES is a collective of explorers dedicated to exposing obscure sights and sounds from modern and traditional urban and rural frontiers via film and video, field recordings, radio and short wave transmissions, international folk and pop music, sound anomalies, other forms of human and natural natural expression not documented sufficiently enough by various communication channels.
BABA COMMANDANT AND THE MANDINGO BAND
Burkina Faso has always marched to its own drummer. The small West African nation has sometimes been overshadowed by its more populous northern neighbor Mali, and was once the southeastern frontier of the sprawling medieval Malian Empire. This empire spanned 10 modern nations and dozens of ethnic groups, and was knit together by the Mandé or Mandinka language and cultural complex—a language of kings, scholars, and epic poetry still spoken today. But “The Land of Upright Men” is a cultural powerhouse in its own right, and few artists embody the creative, independent spirit of Burkina Faso as Baba Commandant & the Mandingo Band, a four-piece ensemble that reimagines ancient Mandé musical traditions for the 21st century.
The group is led by the charismatic, enigmatic singer Baba Commandant (aka, Mamadou Sanou), an activist for traditional Mandinka music who began his career as a dancer with the Koule Dafourou troupe, before making his mark as a singer—or shouter—with various local bands. Baba originally hails from Burkina Faso’s second city, Bobo-Dioulasso—a bustling railway town with deep Mandinka roots. There he grew up immersed in Mandé traditions, and attended initiation rites for the Donso hunter society, from whom Baba learned his signature instrument, the donso n’goni.
A traditional, six-stringed harp with a gourd resonator, the donso n’goni conjures up earthy tones that create hypnotic, trance-like patterns. The instrument’s name translates as “hunter’s harp” and originated among the Senufo hunters of Burkina Faso, one of the regional Donso hunter societies of Mandinka culture. These semi-secret fraternities are spread across the historic Wassoulou region of Mali, Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso, and its members are highly respected as traditional healers, mystics, seers, and storytellers. The Donso accompany their storytelling and songs with the n’goni, preserving genealogies, proverbs, esoterica, and generational knowledge.
Today Baba Commandant & the Mandingo Band make their home in the capital, Ouagadougou, and are a fixture on the city’s burgeoning music scene. Their debut album, Juguya, caused a stir in 2015—winning critical acclaim for its unique fusion of traditional Burkinabé instruments; propulsive, Afrobeat-inspired horns; and raw guitar power that created an unstoppable groove. Their sound is anchored by Baba’s donso n’goniand gravelly vocals, as well as by the electric guitar heroics of Issouf Diabate, and a battery of traditional and modern percussion, including the balafon (the West African predecessor of the xylophone), which adds a piquant, rhythmic punch to so much Mandinka traditional and pop music.
Baba Commandant draws on his intimate knowledge of Donso traditions whenever he takes up his n’goni; alternately growling, whispering, and chanting his way through the group’s repertoire. Their sound has evolved over time, jettisoning the horns in favor of a tighter focus on the interplay between Diabate’s sparkling guitar and the n’goni’s gutbucket funk. The result is a leaner, meaner, four-piece touring outfit who are bringing their road-tested sound to North America for the first time in 2023.
DWARFS OF EAST AGOUZA
Dwarfs Of East Agouza are a leading force of improvised musical excitement and stand apart from wider parts of a post-punk underground scene that doesn’t fit neatly into any post-punk genre of the last twenty years. Founded in Cairo circa 2015 by Alan Bishop (ex-Sun City Girls and co-founder of Sublime Frequencies) with Sam Shalabi (Land Of Kush, Karkhana) and Maurice Louca (Karkhana) the trio developed a unique and always recognizable sound, but with many faces to show. The group started playing together in Cairo’s Agouza district in 2012 to explore hypnotic local traditions, as heard on their excellent debut album “Bes.” Improvisation on the highest level. Organic, never arty. On their latest recording, The Green Dogs of Dashur, the band breaks off all constraints and reveals a resolutely free album offering the listener variations of seductive melodies and unhinged improvised trance.
