random TEG funfact
for a very long time I had planned for Rodimus & Soundwave to have an "I can't lose you" moment centered around Trailbreaker getting seriously injured in an accident. The scene is written and intensely emotional, and I still really like it. I wish I could've cannibalized it.
But after I started getting Trailbreaker's backstory down, I felt bad for him. He had already been through enough. He, an innocent side character, shouldn't be injured just so our MCs could have a dramatic moment. And that's good writing advice imho.
injure the MCs instead! bahaha

10 Strategies to Writing the Perfect College Essay
As a high school student, one of the most crucial tasks you'll face in your college application process is writing your college essay. This is your opportunity to showcase your unique personality, experiences, and aspirations to the admissions committee. Writing a compelling and memorable essay can significantly impact your chances of getting accepted into your dream college. To help you craft a standout college essay writers,
Here are 10 strategies to follow.
Understand the Prompt: Before you start writing, carefully read and understand the essay prompt. Take note of the key themes or questions that the prompt is asking you to address. Make sure you fully comprehend the topic and any specific requirements or constraints.
Brainstorm Ideas: Once you understand the prompt, brainstorm ideas for your essay. Reflect on your life experiences, accomplishments, challenges, and goals. Think about what makes you unique and what you can bring to the college community. Write down all your ideas without filtering them at this stage.
Choose a Compelling Topic: Based on your brainstorming, select a topic that is meaningful to you and will allow you to showcase your personality and character. Avoid cliché topics and choose something that will make your essay stand out from the rest.
Create an Outline: Organize your ideas into a coherent outline. A well-structured essay typically includes an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Your outline will serve as a roadmap for your essay and help you maintain a clear and logical flow of ideas.
Show, Don't Tell: Instead of simply stating facts, show your story through vivid and descriptive language. Use sensory details, anecdotes, and specific examples to paint a picture and engage the reader's imagination. This will make your essay more memorable and impactful.
Be Authentic: Be true to yourself and write in your own voice. Avoid using overly formal language or using words and phrases that you wouldn't normally use. Admissions officers are looking for genuine and authentic essays that reflect your true personality and character.
Be Concise: Admissions officers read hundreds, if not thousands, of essays, so it's important to be concise and get to the point. Avoid rambling or repeating information. Use clear and concise language to convey your ideas effectively.
Edit and Revise: After writing your first draft, take the time to edit and revise your essay. Check for grammar and spelling errors, awkward sentences, and inconsistencies. Ask for feedback from teachers, counselors, or trusted friends and make necessary revisions to improve your essay.
Follow the Common Application Guidelines: If you are using the Common Application, make sure to follow the guidelines and word limit provided. Be mindful of any specific requirements or prompts set by the colleges you are applying to. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in your essay being disqualified.
Proofread: Finally, thoroughly proofread your essay to catch any remaining errors. Pay attention to grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting. A well-polished essay reflects your attention to detail and shows your commitment to excellence.
In conclusion, writing a college essay requires careful planning, thoughtful reflection, and strong writing skills. By following these strategies, you can craft a compelling and memorable essay that will help you stand out from the competition and increase your chances of getting accepted into your dream college. Remember to be authentic, show, don't tell, and edit and revise your essay thoroughly. Good luck in your common application writers!

10 things a WRITER SHOULD NEVER DO!
You hear a lot of advice on what you need to do as a writer... but what about things you shouldn’t do? These are all subjective tips I’ve found online— take as much info as you want from them, and disregard the things you don’t agree with!
1) Never disregard story structure. Even if you’re a pantser or love creative writing without constraints, always keep a basic structure in mind. This doesn’t mean to follow it religiously, but instead... keep it in the back of your brain so that your story can build towards important plot points, the climax and properly develop your characters. Write freely, but never forget the foundation of what makes a successful story.
2) Never abandon your first novel. To become an experienced and proficient writer, it takes time and practice. If your first novel isn’t working out, never trash it completely. After all, first-time projects usually are never going to be as good as later pieces.
Either set it aside for a later time, or use it to practice on. It’s in the editing and rewriting where you can fix it, or decide that it’s not as strong as you’d hoped. In that case, you can take bits and pieces of it and transform it into an entirely new story.
3) Never worry about how you “should” be writing. Not only does this take the fun out of the process, but it can make your writing choppy and unnatural. Everyone writes differently, there is no “one size fits all”. Take time to learn the rules of the craft, the structures, the patterns— but when it comes to the act of writing, don’t restrict yourself.
4) Don’t edit alone. Do the first rounds of editing on your own, but when it comes to a point where you can’t find anything else to fix— consider handing your draft over to trusted friends and family, beta readers and even professional editors if you have the money to do so!
5) Don’t be on the computer too long/neglect exercise. When you work out the body, you’re also working out the mind. If you feel sluggish or sore from sitting all day, your writing will most likely suffer as well! No matter how little, try to fit some kind of physical movement into your days.
6) Never skip the fundamentals. Grammar, good sentence structure, strong vocabulary... don’t ever forget the small, simple things that build healthy stories. You could have an amazing plot, but if your fundamentals suffer, it could drag everything down with it!
7) Never try to write like your idols. If you’re trying hard to copy a certain writing style, you aren’t in the “flow” of things. It’s when we try too hard that we lose the sheer joy of the process. Read and study your favorite authors and naturally you’ll pick up certain habits from them— but never try to force your writing to be similar to theirs. Your own style and voice will come within time.
8) Never write something because the market says so. If horror is the best-selling category but you hate it— don’t feel like you have to write that specific genre to be successful. There are niches and fanbases for every genre and if you truly love what you are writing, it will show in the work that you do!
9) Never let others determine your story’s worth. Not everyone will like your story, but that doesn’t determine if it’s good or not. Harry Potter was rejected 12 times... but look at it now. Never falter because someone might not like your story and never let their opinion dictate if you should be writing or not. At the end of the day, we write because we love to.
10) Never follow the rules too strictly. Yes, that includes this post, haha! In writing, rules are guidelines, and when you pave your own path— that’s when your style and creativity begin to bubble. You still need to learn the rules of course— but if every writer stuck to the same formula... all the novels in the world would be predictable and lacking uniqueness.

Giving Quality, Motivating Feedback
A guest post by @shealynn88!
The new writer in your writing group just sent out their latest story and it’s...not exciting. You know it needs work, but you’re not sure why, or where they should focus.
This is the blog post for you!
Before we get started, it’s important to note that this post isn’t aimed at people doing paid editing work. In the professional world, there are developmental editors, line editors, and copy editors, who all have a different focus. That is not what we’re covering here. Today, we want to help you informally give quality, detailed, encouraging feedback to your fellow writers.
The Unwritten Rules
Everyone seems to have a different understanding of what it means to beta, edit, or give feedback on a piece, so it’s best to be on the same page with your writer before you get started.
Think about what type of work you’re willing and able to do, how much time you have, and how much emotional labor you’re willing to take on. Then talk to your writer about their expectations.
Responsibilities as an editor/beta may include:
Know what the author’s expectation is and don’t overstep. Different people in different stages of writing are looking for, and will need, different types of support. It’s important to know what pieces of the story they want feedback on. If they tell you they don’t want feedback on dialogue, don’t give them feedback on dialogue. Since many terms are ambiguous or misunderstood, it may help you to use the list of story components in the next section to come to an agreement with your writer on what you’ll review.
Don’t offer expertise you don’t have. If your friend needs advice on their horse book and you know nothing about horses, be clear that your read through will not include any horse fact checking. Don’t offer grammar advice if you’re not good at grammar. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give feedback on things you do notice, but don’t misrepresent yourself, and understand your own limits.
Give positive and constructive feedback. It is important for a writer to know when something is working well. Don’t skimp on specific positive feedback — this is how you keep writers motivated. On the other hand, giving constructive feedback indicates where there are issues. Be specific on what you’re seeing and why it’s an issue. It can be hard for someone to improve if they don’t understand what’s wrong.
Be clear about your timing and availability, and provide updates if either changes. Typically, you’ll be doing this for free, as you’re able to fit it in your schedule. But it can be nerve wracking to hand your writing over for feedback and then hear nothing. For everyone’s sanity, keep the writer up to date on your expected timeline and let them know if you’re delayed for some reason. If you cannot complete the project for them, let them know. This could be for any reason — needing to withdraw, whatever the cause, is valid! It could be because working with the writer is tough, you don’t enjoy the story, life got tough, you got tired, etc. All of that is fine; just let them know that you won’t be able to continue working on the project.
Be honest if there are story aspects you can’t be objective about. Nearly all of your feedback is going to be personal opinion. There are some story elements that will evoke strong personal feelings. They can be tropes, styles, specific characterizations, or squicks. In these cases, ask the writer to get another opinion on that particular aspect, or, if you really want to continue, find similar published content to review and see if you can get a better sense of how other writers have handled it.
Don’t get personal. Your feedback should talk about the characters, the narrator, the plotline, the sentence structure, or other aspects of the story. Avoid making ‘you’ statements or judgements, suggested or explicit, in your feedback. Unless you’re looking at grammar or spelling, most of the feedback you’ll have will be your opinion. Don’t present it as fact.
Your expectations of the writer/friend/group member you are working with may include:
Being gracious in accepting feedback. A writer may provide explanations for an issue you noticed or seek to discuss your suggestions. However, if they constantly argue with you, that may be an indicator to step back.
Being responsible for emotional reactions to getting feedback. While getting feedback can be hard on the ego and self esteem, that is something the writer needs to work on themselves. While you can provide reassurance and do emotional labor if you’re comfortable, it is also very reasonable to step back if the writer isn’t ready to do that work.
Making the final choice regarding changes to the work. The writer should have a degree of confidence in accepting or rejecting your feedback based on their own sense of the story. While they may consult you on this, the onus is on them to make changes that preserve the core of the story they want to tell.
Some people aren’t ready for feedback, even though they’re seeking it. You’re not signing up to be a psychologist, a best friend, or an emotional support editor. You can let people know in advance that these are your expectations, or you can just keep them in mind for your own mental health. As stated above, you can always step back from a project, and if writers aren’t able to follow these few guidelines, it might be a good time to do that. (It’s also worth making sure that, as a writer, you’re able to give these things to your beta/editor.)
Specificity is Key
One of the hardest things in editing is pinning down the ‘whys’ of unexciting work, so let’s split the writing into several components and talk about evaluations you can make for each one.
You can also give this list to your writer ahead of time as a checklist, to see which things they want your feedback on.
Generally, your goal is going to be to help people improve incrementally. Each story they write should be better than the previous one, so you don’t need to go through every component for every story you edit. Generally, I wouldn’t suggest more than 3 editing rounds on any single story that isn’t intended for publication. Think of the ‘many pots’ theory — people who are honing their craft will improve more quickly by writing a lot of stories instead of incessantly polishing one.
With this in mind, try addressing issues in the order below, from general to precise. It doesn’t make sense to critique grammar and sentence structure if the plot isn’t solid, and it can be very hard on a writer to get feedback on all these components at once. If a piece is an early or rough draft, try evaluating no more than four components at a time, and give specific feedback on what does and doesn’t work, and why.
High Level Components
Character arc/motivation:
Does each character have a unique voice, or do they all sound the same?
In dialogue, are character voices preserved? Do they make vocabulary and sentence-structure choices that fit with how they’re being portrayed?
Does each character have specific motivations and focuses that are theirs alone?
Does each character move through the plot naturally, or do they seem to be shoehorned/railroaded into situations or decisions for the sake of the plot? Be specific about which character actions work and which don’t. Tell the writer what you see as their motivation/arc and why—and point out specific lines that indicate that motivation to you.
Does each character's motivation seem to come naturally from your knowledge of them?
Are you invested (either positively or negatively) in the characters? If not, why not? Is it that they have nothing in common with you? Do you not understand where they’re coming from? Are they too perfect or too unsympathetic?
Theme:
It’s a good idea to summarize the story and its moral from your point of view and provide that insight to the writer. This can help them understand if the points they were trying to make come through. The theme should tie in closely with the character arcs. If not, provide detailed feedback on where it does and doesn’t tie in.
Plot Structure:
For most issues with plot structure, you can narrow them down to pacing, characterization, logical progression, or unsatisfying resolution. Be specific about the issues you see and, when things are working well, point that out, too.
Is there conflict that interests you? Does it feel real?
Is there a climax? Do you feel drawn into it?
Do the plot points feel like logical steps within the story?
Is the resolution tied to the characters and their growth? Typically this will feel more real and relevant and satisfying than something you could never have seen coming.
Is the end satisfying? If not, is it because you felt the end sooner and the story kept going? Is it because too many threads were left unresolved? Is it just a matter of that last sentence or two being lackluster?
Point Of View:
Is the point of view clear and consistent?
Is the writing style and structure consistent with that point of view? For example, if a writer is working in first person or close third person, the style of the writing should reflect the way the character thinks. This extends to grammar, sentence structure, general vocabulary and profanity outside of the dialogue.
If there is head hopping (where the point of view changes from chapter to chapter or section to section), is it clear in the first few sentences whose point of view you’re now in? Chapter headers can be helpful, but it should be clear using structural, emotional, and stylistic changes that you’re with a new character now.
Are all five senses engaged? Does the character in question interact with their environment in realistic, consistent ways that reflect how people actually interact with the world?
Sometimes the point of view can feel odd if it’s too consistent. Humans don’t typically think logically and linearly all the time, so being in someone’s head may sometimes be contradictory or illogical. If it’s too straightforward, it might not ‘feel’ real.
Be specific about the areas that don’t work and break them down based on the questions above.
Pacing:
Does the story jump around, leaving you confused about what took place when?
Do some scenes move quickly where others drag, and does that make sense within the story?
If pacing isn’t working, often it’s about the level of detail or the sentence structure. Provide detailed feedback about what you care about in a given scene to help a writer focus in.
Setting:
Is the setting clear and specific? Writing with specific place details is typically more rooted, interesting, and unique. If you find the setting vague and/or uninteresting and/or irrelevant, you might suggest replacing vague references — ‘favorite band’, ‘coffee shop on the corner’, ‘the office building’ — with specific names to ground the setting and make it feel more real.
It might also be a lack of specific detail in a scene that provides context beyond the characters themselves. Provide specific suggestions of what you feel like you’re missing. Is it in a specific scene, or throughout the story? Are there scenes that work well within the story, where others feel less grounded? Why?
Low Level Components
Flow/Sentence Structure:
Sentence length and paragraph length should vary. The flow should feel natural.
When finding yourself ‘sticking’ on certain sentences, provide specific feedback on why they aren’t working. Examples are rhythm, vocabulary, subject matter (maybe something is off topic), ‘action’ vs ‘explanation’, passive vs. active voice.
Style/Vocabulary:
Writing style should be consistent with the story — flowery prose works well for mythic or historical pieces and stories that use that type of language are typically slower moving. Quick action and short sentences are a better fit for murder mysteries, suspense, or modern, lighter fiction.
Style should be consistent within the story — it may vary slightly to show how quickly action is happening, but you shouldn’t feel like you’re reading two different stories.
SPAG (Spelling and Grammar):
Consider spelling and grammar in the context of the point of view, style and location of the story (eg, England vs. America vs. Australia).
If a point of view typically uses incorrect grammar, a SPAG check will include making sure that it doesn’t suddenly fall into perfect grammar for a while. In this case, consistency is going to be important to the story feeling authentic.
Word Count Requirements:
If the story has been written for a project, bang, anthology, zine, or other format that involves a required word count minimum or maximum, and the story is significantly over or under the aimed-for word count (30% or more/less), it may not make sense to go through larger edits until the sizing is closer to requirements. But, as a general rule, I’d say word count is one of the last things to worry about.
*
The best thing we can do for another writer is to keep them writing. Every single person will improve if they keep going. Encouragement is the most important feedback of all.
I hope this has helped you think about how you provide feedback. Let us know if you have other tips or tricks! This works best as a collaborative process where we all can support one another!

Writing Tip!
An easy way to tell if you’re showing instead of telling is how much you’re using is/was. My English professor explained this to me a few semesters ago, and while he just wanted varied sentence structure in my papers, it also works very well for creative writing.
This isn’t to say that is and was are bad verbs, but rather that they are very basic and do not express anything beyond the fact that something exists. Sometimes, that’s all you need to know in a sentence, but often, the writer can make the story or the characters more engaging by explaining who someone is, what something is, where something is, when something is, why something is, or how something or someone is more powerfully by using one of a few tactics.
The first method is to use strong verbs. “Strong verbs” is a term that gets thrown around a lot, but a strong verb is simply a verb that explains what action is happening as clearly as possibly. For instance, when one “jumps” off the diving board, the reader doesn’t know how the person jumped, but the reader will be able to more clearly see the action if you write “she dove” or “he cannonballed” or “she belly-flopped.” Be aware of who is reading your writing and who the narrator is. In general, if your target demographic probably doesn’t know the word or if your narrator wouldn’t know the word, use a simpler, less precise verb and use adverbs to make it specific.
Another way is to show why the narrator was saying “it is/she was/there is” in the first place. Think of the is/was statement as the disease. You want your reader to guess the disease, so you start describing symptoms. For instance, “She is mourning her husband.” vs. “She stared at the empty seat at the table, unfazed by her mother’s repeated attempts to get her attention.” This way is more rambly than just swapping boring verbs for strong verbs, but it is a good way to show the narrator’s experience in life, the narrator’s biases, the narrator’s emotional state, etc.
One other way is to make the object of the sentence the subject instead. This just means that whatever “is/was” is now what the sentence is about. This is a simple fix in cases when the object is doing something in the sentence. Instead of “There was a ball rolling past her feet.” write “A ball rolled past her feet.”
Let me illustrate:
How you can use varied word choice to show who is being talked about:
Bland: Jason’s dad was standing in front of Jason.
Engaging: His dad loomed over him.
By using a stronger verb, the more hostile loomed, the reader gets a better idea of who Jason’s dad is and how Jason feels about him.
How you can use varied word choice to show who is talking:
Bland: Macy was sitting at the edge of her seat.
Engaging: Macy balanced very carefully at the very edge of the seat so her feet could touch the floor, because Macy was a very big girl now.
The POV character is a young girl at an age where she wants to be perceived as older than the height of chair legs and the lack of height of her own legs will let her be. She also refers unironically to herself as a big girl in her own thoughts, something grownups generally do not do. By expanding on the reason for the action instead of the action itself and with careful word choice, you can set the tone of the character and of the story.
How you can use varied word choice to show what something is:
Bland: That is a tree branch blowing against the window.
Still bland but better: A tree branch blew against the window.
Engaging: The branch smacked against the window.
This is an example of taking the object (the thing in the sentence that the verb is happening to) in this case “branch” and make it the subject. In the still bland but better version of the sentence, the fact that the tree branch is blowing against the window is obvious, but that doesn’t tell us anything about how the narrator feels about what the tree branch is doing. That tells us what, but it does not tell us what the character feels about this thing. Smacked is a more violent, sudden, startling verb that communicates suddenness, surprise, and unease.
How you can use varied word choice to show where something is:
Bland: The phone was on the far side of the nightstand.
Engaging: She flopped an arm blindly across the nightstand, but her fingers hit empty air just shy of the faint glow of her phone.
The engaging version of this sentence tells you more about the character’s mental state, fatigued, while also communicating where the phone is. Also, using a more descriptive word like flopped gives the reader a clearer mental image of what is physically happening in the scene.
How you can use varied word choice to show when something is set:
Bland: It was the early two thousands.
Engaging: Jana looked around the room and saw many a teenage male heinie, but not a belt among them.
Noting fashion trends, like sagging pants or hoop skirts, can reinforce the time period that you’re writing in and how the narrator fits or does not fit into that time period.
How you can use varied word choice to show when (what time) something is:
Bland: It was seven P.M. on a summer night.
Engaging: He watched the sun dip below the far reaches of the ocean as he wiped the sweat from his brow.
The engaging version of this sentence uses a few details to show about what time and when in the year this sentence takes place: it is sunset, so the exact time isn’t stated, but the rough time is implied; the ocean does exist at times of the year when humans aren’t on it as much (and here I though the entire state of Hawaii disappeared between September and April) but most readers will associate the beach with summer; and if the reader didn’t get the clue about the traditionally seasonal location, it is hot enough to make the main character sweat.
How you can use varied word choice to show why the narrator believes something:
Bland: Kai is a good friend.
Engaging: Kai held her hair away from her face as she threw up into the toilet bowl for the fourth time that night.
Anyone can say anything about anyone else, but the best way to get a reader to like a character, an idea, or a thing is to show them why they should like that thing. Instead of making bland moral claims like “Love is stronger than hate.” tell me how the Samaritan stopped to save the Jew, or how the enemies put aside their differences to protect what they care about. Instead of saying “He was scared of his dad.” show me the beer cans and the slurred speech, show me the belt falling and the voice yelling. Show the reader why.
How you can use varied word choice to show how something is:
Bland: The woman was looking at him.
Engaging: The woman ogled him.
Strong verbs again! Use strong verbs that are emotionally charged when you’re talking about emotionally charged situations! Being ogled is an uncomfortable sensation for the person being ogled, and it also shows disrespect on the part of the person ogling.
Keep in mind that these are guidelines! Sometimes is is the best word for the job, and don’t stress if you have a lot of is/was in your stories. Just because they’re bland doesn’t mean that sometimes you need bland verbs to communicate what you want to communicate. Still, you don’t want vagueness to be your crutch, either. Practice showing instead of telling when showing is more important, but have fun with it! Besides, you can always edit whatever you hate or are unsure of now sometime later.
Don’t sweat! Go write awesome papers and stories!

Tips for Writing in First Person
Source: https://writersedit.com/fiction-writing/7-essential-guidelines-for-writing-in-first-person/
Post by @writingwithacutlass on instagram
good morning/evening loves! today i've compiled a list of tips to help you write in first person! i hope it's helpful to you, have a lovely day/night <3
Decide if first person is right for your story
Before you start writing, you should be sure that you know which pov you’re writing in. First person is great for getting in your character’s head more, and it feels a little more authentic and close. Both as a reader and writer I’ve always preferred first person, but third person is great too; especially when you want to expose the readers to things that the characters aren’t exposed to, or to provide multiple perspectives without head-hopping. It’s up to you, whatever fits your story best.
Pick a tense and stick with it
Take some time to decide if you want to write your story in past-tense or present-tense. If you constantly switch up tense, your story will be an absolute mess and it will take a lot of rewriting to get out a legible first draft. Trust me, you’d rather spend some extra time figuring it out before you write than have to fix an entire draft when you’re done. I have some experience with changing my story’s pov and tense about five times in the first draft and let me tell you it was not a fun experience.
Develop a strong voice
Voice is always an important aspect in storytelling, but even more so when you’re telling the story in first person. Your story isn’t told by you, the author; it’s being told by the character. Make sure you know your character thoroughly; get inside their head. Your readers should be able to tell your character’s voice apart from others. You can develop character voice through language, emotion, worldview… Be careful you don’t start letting your own voice slip into their voice. Characters are not meant to be a mouthpiece for the author. Let them be their own person.
Avoid too much introspection
Although a first-person narrative does a great job of getting inside a character’s head, readers don’t want to spend all their time there. Be aware of long paragraphs of inner monologue and introspection. The story isn’t only about the character’s thoughts and feelings. I myself am guilty of doing this, and I need to step back more often and focus on action, surroundings, and other characters more.
Vary your phrasing
Although your first draft will likely be full of it (and that’s okay!) try to avoid starting every sentence with “I did this, I did that”. It gets boring and antagonizing to read. Keep an eye on repetitive phrasing. Making this a habit is really helpful for your sentence structure and writing style in general, but it can always be fixed in rewriting/editing stages so don’t spend too long overthinking it. One way you can do this is by eliminating “I” when it comes to the five senses. Instead of saying “I saw a butterfly in the garden”, you can say “a butterfly fluttered around the garden”. Remember your readers should be reading the story as if living inside the character’s head.
Show don’t tell
This is a common piece of writing advice (which is not always applicable) but it’s more important in first person because people don’t “tell” themselves things. They are “shown” to us, as real-life experiences rather than our own thoughts telling ourselves what’s happening. In first person, it’s easy to accidentally tell instead of show. When it comes to emotions, you need to be especially intentional with showing. However, mundane actions such as brushing your hair do not need to be described in full detail. Another note to add...please do not have your character look in the mirror and describe their looks to themselves as a “tactic” to describe the character to the readers. This comes off as forced and unnatural, and besides; no one does that in real life.
Remember the limits of first-person narrative
In first person storytelling, you’re committing to telling the story solely through that character and what they know, feel and experience. Your narrator should be in every single scene, you can’t include details they don’t know, and you need to write the entire story as seen through their eyes (think of it as a lens). These limitations aren’t necessarily a bad thing! When it’s done correctly, first person storytelling is an incredibly effective, intimate, and in-depth way of telling the story and is sure to captivate the readers.

Note
how exactly do you write the show? what techniques do you use to write certain scenes?
Storytelling a character-work matters to me above anything else. As a result, I’m always taking notes on ideas. In my spare time, with another writer, there is constantly action. I wouldn’t spend so much time on a project that didn’t engage me in critical thought and analysis in and of itself.
Everything is 100% of the time thoroughly outlined. The remainder of the series is loosely outlined, and we know where we want each and every character to end up. Granted, some more specifically than others, but we are constantly working out the fine details. I feel that in storytelling you need to be able to maintain a balance at all times of having a close-to-vivid picture of the end-goal while leaving that mental wiggle-room to readjust ideas as new ones come up. If you lock yourself down entirely, you block off the better potential routes. If you don’t know the end goal, you’re bound to meander and not build up to something meaningful unless you get lucky. If you put all of your time into something, you CANNOT leave it to chance.
I love to live in the broader conceptual zone. Theming. Thinking through the purpose of characters and the world they live in. How do pieces connect? What matters? How would the actions of the characters reflect on the viewer and the world of the show? Why X? Why Z? Nothing makes sense, life is an illusion, how do characters make sense of that?
But also I am fascinated by character. I love to dig into a characters’ moral code and force them to question. I need to find purpose in every little quirk, whether in origin or in result over time. What pairs make sparks? How do different characters change one another? Who has a story to tell, and in the case of II, when is the best time to tell it? How does that story affect everyone else, does it create a new story? Repeat.
There is so much to say here in regards to episode 12 alone. But, sticking to released episodes, my go-to scene is Suitcase and Knife at the dock, which you better bet started way longer. We take everything that Knife and Suitcase have been through come this point, contrast it with their brief conversation in S2E7, and force a character to question the moral values while shedding light on another. It helps helps that I think they are perfectly-suited to bounce well off of each other. And that I’m a sucker for quiet, contemplative scenes. A dynamic is constructed, we re-establish our characters’ purposes (especially in the eyes of one-another), and it leads to an intense decision- one that triggers strong effects down the line. Repeat.
To start moving into your question more specifically, like I noted earlier we have a ton of concepts going forward, and as one episode nears its end we really dig into the next one and make sure everything is set and understood (I hecking love episode 13). Before Brian and I jump into more thorough outlining, we need to have every general idea sorted out, which if I had to choose one step of the process, I’d call my strong-suit (despite loving every little detail that goes into -pre-production). We need to review:
-What is each characters’ arc (important or not) in the episode, and what events accomplish it? Who needs more focus than others? Who can sit out?
-Who is getting eliminated, and how (which is well-sorted out for the series already, but with wiggle-room)?
-What do we need the characters to be able to do, physically, in the episode- and what are three challenges that can allow that to happen most-properly?
-What themes and messages matter most to us in the episode?
-What are key moments and visuals that we would like to highlight?
-What scenes NEED to happen in order to complete each arc? What scenes would we LIKE to have to strengthen those arcs and the episode?
-How does the world of the show play into the episode? What can we explore? What hints can we leave?
Then we’re onto outlining. This takes all the concepts that we initially had and breaks it down into a general beat-sheet, talking about every single important point we need to hit on, in order, for the episode to be complete- in a lot more detail. This is used as a pitch to show off the workability of the concept and how it, and likely will, play out in structure. Granted, more-so in episode 12 than in episode 11, the story that we pitch through the outline can go through many readjustments between that point and script-completion. That’s a mix between reworking concepts based on Adam and Taylor’s pitch-input and then the natural progression of the four of us (and often plus Ben) coming up with strong concepts over the scripting process that take some details in different directions.
Once we are settled on that story, scripting is on the way! By this point in pre-production I am incredibly comfortable with the characters’ mindsets and feel pretty free to go about writing out what’s in their heads. We work within the general guidelines presented by the outline, and complete scenes often as individual pieces- knowing already how they fit in and need to flow. There is so much to talk about just in terms of writing strategies, I might make separate posts about more specific types of scenes going forward. A lot of it comes down to balancing the puzzle pieces that are constantly juggled throughout my mind and the comedy that comes from the characters and their situation. It’s important to know what is necessary and when, and obviously there’s no one-way about it, but it’s a skill you can certainly build up with enough practice. A tone can sell an emotion, and emotion can sell a beat, a beat can sell an arc, and arcs are everything. Nothing is meaningless, even things about meaningless. If a story is told and a writer is purposefully avoiding making or alluding to a statement, it’s a wasted opportunity… so I see it.
A great deal of writing is rewriting. That’s a good sign. A first draft CAN be the best draft, but chances are it isn’t. Even when I have a good plan for a scene, I’ll keep the major beats at the back of mind and just let characters talk. I’ll see if they naturally hit on the beats I need them to hit on. If it goes on for long enough without meaning, the convo is scrapped, but good ideas from the scene can be retained for the next try. Retry and redirect it. A scene cannot be written so procedurally that it ruins any natural characterization that a character deserves. Again, it’s that dang balance back at-it. In writing it can be tough in the moment to entirely scrap a scene that you just worked hard on, but trust me- when you muster the strength to let go, you won’t miss it. You can always do even better.
Find a piece of yourself in every character you write. If you have trouble with writing a character, there’s a decent chance that it is because you’re connecting to them. Find qualities in the character that you can understand and empathize with, or relate it to something you’re familiar with in your day-to-day life, and focus in on that. Any character could be a good character if you use them properly and focus on what’s drawing about them.
If a scene accomplishes nothing, it shouldn’t be there. Every scene must establish a motivation, progress the action, or explain something in some manner. Understand what’s necessary, and feed into what makes a scene good.
Write what you like. Thinking about what the audience will get out of things is good when conceptualizing, but your vision should never rely on that. If you find something interesting or funny, others will too. Write what you would enjoy seeing. Occasionally when I come up with something I’ll think “this is amazing, people are gonna hate it” and go with it anyway. This goes more-so for the pre-writing stages, such as deciding character-focus degrees or eliminations, for instance, but it is still important in any step of the process.
When working with a team on a script, chances are there will be arguments. No good ways around that. That-said, embrace discussions and arguments! Every argued idea and concept deserves attention. If you are spending a lot of time on a project and are not willing to dig into what works and what doesn’t thematically, character-wise, or within the rules of the world- there is something wrong there. Be passionate about what you’re writing. Don’t shut down input until it is thoroughly discussed. Fighting does not mean something is wrong. (Although, fighting to the death is a problem).
A lot of the editing in II writing is shortening. We have a budget, we want episodes to come out as quick as possible, there’s no room to meander. Even scenes that we had deemed “perfect” at a point may still have a flaw of being too long for our own good. Although it seemed like a major limit back in the day, it quite honestly is important to learn how and when to keep writing concise. Bring everything down to the essentials. Brevity will allow your work to flow better and come across as neater. An annoyingly tedious two hour movie might be an hour long masterpiece wearing a scary costume. As someone who definitely writes extremely long on every first-go, having more than one pass to check for conciseness is wonderful.
I hope the overview of this process at least shed a little light. There are so many more details to go into, and I’ll gladly dive into them per request. Writing and constructing story for this show is what keeps me going, so I’m glad it has intrigued many of you, as well. :)

Month 12 Journal Reflection
Each Course
Mastery: Personal Development- Month one was the first course that introduced me to APA format and professional writing. In the media design industry, writing is a part of the job even if some of us wished it wasn’t. Sometimes clients might not care what you do or why you do it. But, some want to know a reason for everything. Month one helped me begin to understand how to write professionally in my writing, academically, and on the job. I was by no means perfect, but I started the process, and that is what matters. This month also helped me to understand what it is to be a master in your profession.
Defining Client Needs- The focus on Month two was on a city logo to attract tourism. During this course, I got to learn about promoting tourism through research and sketching logos for Kyoto Japan. Cities are broad topics because they are known for several things. So, I got to dive deep into research to uncover what makes a city like Kyoto so enticing to travelers and locals. As a media designer, these skills will be super helpful to me. I’ve helped clients before, but now I understand how to dissect a city from all angles in order to create a logo fitting for the clients’ needs.
Brand Development- Month three did not teach me anything new but instead helped me to further perfect my craft. Branding and logos are my favorite digital design work, so I knew how to do that. But, this month delved deeper into the concept of what a brand is, and that was so helpful. With that knowledge, it was so much easier to develop ideas for the Kyoto city brand which in turn will make my future designs easier to come by.
Effective Copywriting- This was my first time dealing with copywriting, but this course helped me to understand its importance and made it so much more bearable. I was able to take the copy and apply it to a campaign. Regarding my personal and professional development, I learned how to edit body copy to say what is essential to the advertisement, write headlines and taglines that would stand out and grab someone’s attention, create different types of testimonial ads, and how to write up a campaign idea. All these skills will help me when I need to maintain a client create content or edit their content to fit the parameters of a project and how to advertise for said client.
Design Research- This course taught me how to take the voice and tone of a brand and the vision board theme into the wordage and the look/feel of a design. It also helped me not just to make any decision lightly. Now when I design I know that everything needs to have a purpose so that the client’s brand is an experience for the consumer from beginning to end.
Organizational Structures- While we did work on motion graphics and that is a skill I want to perfect it was the storyboarding and story journal that felt more important to me personally. The more skills I can get down the better. So, storyboarding helped gain the necessary skills to frame scenes and still. The story journal helped me create different story ideas from the world around me.
Design Strategies & Motivation- Month seven was the beginning of the end for me. In this course, I learned how to build and plan for place branding. I took my work from previous assignments and built on it to produce a campaign that included a logo, vision board, dynamic board, media assets, interviews, and print advertisement. Through this course, I now can help future clients plan for big campaigns that include several components in a timely manner.
Design Integration- Month eight was a continuation of the previous months’ project. But, the purpose of the course was to develop our skills collaboration and critiques. Both skills are essential for my development as a media designer. In the media design field, collaborations happen on projects all the time. Learning how to work as a team player now and also learning what I can and can’t do will make it easier to adjust in the field. Also, learning to critique someone in a way that will help them further develop their work and learning to accept critiques was super important to take into all my future endeavors. I prefer using the rise model compared to the sandwich method.
Multi-Platform Delivery- Month nine was all about focusing on completing the campaign. I had to research what inspired me to make the design decisions and reach the final solutions. From this course, I developed a real sense of substantiating claims I made and persuading the reader to understand why I made certain decisions. This skill is beneficial because I will know how to back up all my claims when I describe my design solutions to a client.
Measuring Design Effectiveness- Surveys are a lot of fun to create and present but waiting on the results is nerve-racking. Month ten I learned about creating a survey and measuring the effectiveness of my design solutions for the campaign. I tested my work against everyday people and audience members. Measuring Design Effectiveness taught me the importance of seeing how a brand’s audience will respond to my designs and if those designs are doing what they are supposed to do. When I am in the field, I know the different ways I can test my designs and how to effectively present the results to a client, so we can decide how to move further.
Presentation of Design Solution- I was starting to feel exhaustion due to working on my thesis defense site. For month eleven, I had to persuade the reader that I had reached mastery by presenting my work on a WIX site and my Behance portfolio. Regarding my development, this course left quite an impression on me.
Professional Practice- Month twelve taught me about ethics and how to always consider using moral reasoning with each project I take on. Every course was necessary for my media design career, but Professional Practice felt the most imperative because if I don’t use what I learned, I could face many legal issues throughout my career. Going forward, I will always have an ethics guideline on hand throughout my career.
Techniques in each course
Month 1
Learning APA early on and making all my mistakes here and in the early months. However, I feel like I learned APA best with the copyrighting course.  I was able to provide the necessary amount of references and synthesize my research to prove my mastery. Personal Triumph: I received my first hundred for the program. It made me realize I could do this.
Month 2
When I started the Logo for Kyoto Japan, I wasn’t sure how to approach the clients’ needs to make a successful logo. For example, I knew that Kyoto wanted to attract tourism with logo design so, as a design solution I research everything and anything dealing with Kyoto, Japan plus I also considered what tourists might want to see. Personal Triumph: Drawing more than a hundred different ideas for a city logo when I didn’t think I would come up with twenty or even ten.
Month 3
This course gave me the knowledge I needed to build a brand around a logo. I already had the logo but had to fulfill the project I had to build it out. Understanding what the word brand and logo meant I could then create a stronger composition that would bring in tourism and education to consumers.
Personal Triumph: Successfully creating three different concepts for a city that is hugely historic and unique.
Month 4
Effective copywriting was the foundation for my thesis project. The awareness ads, the body copy lessons, the headline, and tagline exercises made the production of the full campaign smooth.
Personal Triumph: I learned a campaign isn’t as strong without a call to action. Which I later learned during my place branding project.
Month 5
The techniques from month five were necessary when it came to any decisions regarding my project. I had to explain my reasoning behind why I used a san serif versus a serif or blue versus red. So, remembering how to connect my research and synthesize that information into an effective design solution was critical.
Personal Triumph: I learned how to differentiate between voice and tone.
Month 6
Storyboarding was essential when I was creating the commercial/dynamic board for Riga. I would have dived headfirst into making the recording without squaring away the full story. The whole process would have been a lot longer, but thankfully I learned the importance and necessity of creating a storyboard.
Personal Triumph: For the story journals, I went personal with my last entry and spoke about my depression and it was very therapeutic.
Month 7
Month seven was the start of our main place branding project, so the skills of building the plan and laying out the foundation were super helpful in completing the campaign. If I did not plan my project step by step in this month, I wouldn’t have had a timeline to work with for the future progress of the project.
Personal Triumph: Coming up with a plan to create a likable yet relatable campaign that the community would get behind.
Month 8
By doing critiques, I was able to perfect my project. The technique of critiquing helped me to push my peers and to take a critical look at my work to envision it in the best possible way. Without the in-depth critiques, I don’t think my project would have reached its full potential.
Personal Triumph: I realized what type of critique method suited my style.
Month 9
By substantiating all my claims, it was so much easier to present my project on my portfolio because I knew my reason for every decision. The final look and feel was cohesive and had a purpose.
Personal Triumph: Completing the full campaign and presenting it on my portfolio. Honestly, I never imagined how the final solution would turn out and I was so proud of the work produced.
Month 10
The survey technique helped me to learn how successful my project was which was super important since in month eleven I knew I had to create a thesis site. If I didn’t create a survey, then I would not have had the evidence needed to prove that my work was at a mastery level.
Personal Triumph: Learning that my project was successful due to the survey responses.
Month 11
The sketching technique (sampling layout) made the development of the site so much smoother and writing the bulk of the defense beforehand as well. If I did not do both methods, then creating the site would have been exhausting and many trials and errors. But since I knew the body copy and the layout ahead of it, it was so much easier to complete my thesis project.
Personal Triumph: Finishing my thesis site and feeling accomplished.
Month 12
Tumblr media
^^^ Final Project of month 12 that depicts my journey. The theme was Harry Potter because I thought it showed my journey through this program's ups and downs perfectly. This project was fun and a nice change from all the writing.

Best Brands on Social Media to Inspire Your Social Strategy
Looking for the best brands on social media to spice up your marketing strategy?
Social media marketing might seem scary. After all, there are so many different social platforms–from Pinterest to Facebook to Twitter–and there are so many guidelines to remember for each one!
As a busy business owner, you might not have time to keep up with them. So how do you become one of the best brands on social media?
Luckily, you don’t have to come up with a social strategy for your small business all by yourself. There are so many brands out there that are doing a great job with their social media accounts. Why not take a look at their posts and let them inspire you?
We’re going to break down some of the best brands on social media, dissect what they’re doing right, and figure out what concepts you can carry over into your own social media strategy. Let’s get started!
Best Brands on Social Media to Inspire Your Social Strategy
1. Pop-Tarts
A universally recognized brand that belongs to Kellogg’s, Pop-Tarts has been making sugary toaster pastries since 1964. And their Twitter account does everything right.
The voice of their Twitter account is sarcastic and caters to a younger, Twitter-savvy demographic. The company’s tweets don’t sound like they’re coming from a brand.
Instead, their tone mimics the tone of many popular Twitter accounts. And if a tweet is going viral Pop-Tarts hops on board and creates their own version.
Pop-Tart’s parent company, Kellogg’s, follows a more traditional method of posting. While Pop-Tarts tweets things like, “How beautiful do I look in my new profile pic, very beautiful or extremely beautiful…let me know.”
Kellogg’s counters with tweets that sound more like ads: “For a limited time, new special edition Froot Loops straws are available at @KelloggsNYC. Find out how to make them at home!”
Interestingly enough, Kellogg’s has 89,000 Twitter followers. Pop-Tarts has 164,000. That’s more than enough to qualify them as one of the best brands on social media.
More and more restaurants are beginning to tweak their Twitter marketing strategy, filling their accounts with funny and sometimes questionable tweets. But it’s paying off. People click “follow” because they enjoy the content, even if they don’t patronize the brand. But down the road, they might become a happy customer just because of your social media content.
Studies have shown consumers like to see brands that are funny and aren’t afraid of a little friendly competition on social media.
You see, brands often struggle in overcoming the first phase of reaching out to their audience. This is usually when people still see them as just another faceless brand. And more often than not, when users stumble upon these advertisements in social media, they usually ignore the message especially if it’s from a brand they don’t know.
That’s where you can use humor. It helps in catching the user’s attention and breaking the barrier in between.
Stocking your arsenal of jokes might result in a high conversion rate.
Pop-Tarts is also great at interacting with their fans. They like to “toast” their fans–“which is like roasted,” one tweet reads, “but actually funny.”
How can you apply these principles to your own Twitter marketing strategy?
First of all, figure out your brand voice and stick to it.
If you can’t imagine tweeting something like “This is more beautiful than my ex which doesn’t really say much tbh I never needed you” for your business, don’t! That may work for Pop-Tart’s brand voice, but it doesn’t have to be yours.
However, you do need to put some thought into what you want your brand’s voice to be–and once you’ve decided, post consistently and stay on-brand.
Interacting with customers and fans is also extremely important. Social media, Twitter in particular, exerts a huge influence on the buying habits of many consumers.
85% of Twitter’s 330 million active users think it’s important for businesses to provide customer service using the network.
And a whopping 93% of them plan to purchase for the SMBs (small and medium businesses) they follow.
Furthermore, 69% of users have already made a purchase from an SMB because of something they saw on Twitter.
Again, when you interact with your fans, don’t mimic Pop-Tarts exactly. The company once held a contest where it asked fans to share selfies and then proceeded to criticize each one–a gutsy move. But no matter how you interact with your fans, just do it!
The top things to take away from Pop-Tarts’ Twitter strategy
Develop a brand voice
Interact with your fans
Make your content fun to read
2. Reebok
This athletic apparel company that produces shoes, sportswear, and more is one of the best brands on social media. Reebok has a strong overall digital marketing strategy and does a great job of utilizing different social platforms.
Reebok’s Instagram is full of colorful fitness photography. It’s Facebook page sports appealing photos of the latest Reebok shoe. And the company also puts out some great content on its YouTube channel. But, perhaps surprisingly, the place where Reebok truly excels is on LinkedIn.
What does Reebok do right? Simple: the company shares content on a regular basis. Not only does it post LinkedIn status updates. But Reebok also regularly links to posts from its blog including interviews with athletes, fitness tips, and more.
Reebok has a deep understanding of its target audience (in a nutshell, athletes). And they are great at creating content their audience wants to read.
You can share content on LinkedIn, too. And you should! 40% of LinkedIn users login everyday looking for new content. Content that contains real value will mark you as an expert in your industry and drive more potential customers your way.
When it comes to sharing content on LinkedIn, where do you start?
Statistics have shown that posts containing multimedia — such as videos or posing questions for headlines — don’t perform well.
Instead, craft a strong headline that makes a statement and include lots of images. It’s also helpful to use bullet points to create “skimmable” content. On LinkedIn, people expect long-form content (2,000 words), but they still want to be able to read through it quickly.
This is how the best brands on social media structure their LinkedIn content, and you can write yours this way, too.
3. StubHub
Pinterest is an important marketing tool – and we’ll prove it to you! Having a well-run Pinterest account can help lock in your branding, increase your website traffic/sales, and grow your audience. StubHub is one of the best brands on social media because of its strong Pinterest presence.
StubHub, an Ebay-owned company, is the world’s largest ticket marketplace, letting customers buy and sell tickets for sports events, concerts, and more.
For a company like this, setting up a Pinterest account may have seemed tricky, as Pinterest is naturally best suited for apparel or DIY companies.
But StubHub came up with a creative plan: for every type of event they sell tickets to, there’s a board for it – from “Baseball Hub” to “Indie Music Hub” to “Broadway Hub.” Pins range from interviews with performers to photos of athletes.
StubHub’s 55,000 monthly viewers vary across multiple demographics. They have diverse interests. So StubHub caters to all of them.
Pinterest is a place to get creative. The majority of brands that are successful on Pinterest might be based around home, food, or apparel. But if your small business falls into a different category, you can absolutely still utilize Pinterest as a marketing tool!
It just requires a little out-of-the-box thinking. Consider your type of audience and the kind of content they want to see. For instance, StubHub’s audience wanted to read more details about the celebrities they were buying tickets to see.
Once you’ve gone for a walk in your audience’s shoes, go looking for content that fits what they want to see. You can share your own content on Pinterest. But to save time and to make sure you’re not pushing your product too much, repin content from others, too.
4. Wayfair
Instagram has a slew of new features that make things uber-easy for brands. If you utilize the app’s shopping features, it’s no longer difficult to get the casual scroller off of the Instagram app and onto your site. Instead, it can happen in just one tap of a finger.
Wayfair has been selling furniture and home goods since 2002. And they’ve been getting conversions from Instagram since the new shopping features came out in early 2018. Making them one of the best brands on social media.
Wayfair’s Instagram account is full of beautiful photos of sleek and attractive living room or bedroom sets. If followers like what they see, all they have to do to view product names, prices, and details is tap on the photo. And from there it’s easy to navigate to Wayfair’s website.
Occasionally, Wayfair intersperses these photos with humorous quotes such as “Does refusing to do the dishes count as resistance training?” These posts are a great way to drive customer interaction. They get approximately 150 comments instead of Wayfair’s usual 30.
60% of Instagram user (600 million people) find new brands on Instagram. Meaning this is a platform your small business absolutely must take advantage of. Here’s how.
First, your business profile has to have a product catalog set up on Facebook with Shopify or BigCommerce or another applicable shopping platform. Once Instagram approves your account, you’re good to go.
Using the shopping features is simple: when you upload a photo, you tag the products in the photo, just like you’d tag friends in a group picture. Your followers can then click on the products pictured and view them on your website.
Instagram also has shoppable stories, where you can add a product sticker to a photo on your story. Instagram stories are just as important as posts, so don’t overlook them.
Key takeaways:
Utilize all features that are available on any given social platform.
Make it painless and easy for people to get onto your website.
5. Wendy’s
Wendy’s Twitter account sounds a lot like Pop-Tarts’–sarcastic and funny with lots of interaction and input from fans.
Wendy’s does one important thing on Twitter that boosts their interaction and helps them classify as one of the best brands on social media: they stay on top of current events!
“Might need a Scott Frosty to ice down the beating Nebraska is taking,” they tweeted after one football game. Tweets like this get big interaction numbers–try almost 3,000 comments and 14,000 retweets on for size.
There’s always something going on in the world, whether sports or otherwise. Before you post on your social media accounts, spend some time scrolling through your feed and figuring out what’s in the news. Once you have a handle on what everyone is talking about, put your own spin on it.
Wendy’s also has an excellent Facebook page that has two important things–customer service and seasonal posts.
You can incorporate these two things with your small business Facebook page, too. Facebook is a great place to provide customer service to your customers, whether through Messenger or by responding to comments. Just remember to actually follow up on the retribution you’ve promised.
And seasonal posts–content themed around whatever holiday is approaching–will always drive interaction and be a fun way to promote your business.
6. Cisco
Cisco Systems, a technology company that’s a worldwide leader in the IT industry, knows what they’re doing when it comes to social media. Let’s start with their LinkedIn.
Cisco was #4 on LinkedIn’s Top 10 Company Pages list in 2017. There are a few key reasons why the company was recognized as one of the best brands on social media.
As we discussed earlier, sharing content on LinkedIn is important, and Cisco does a great job of it. But the company does another thing right, too: its company page.
Cisco’s LinkedIn copy is clear, concise, and immediately lets you know what you’re looking at. You can find a link to its website and see a map of where Cisco’s headquarters are located. You can even view a “stock snapshot” and see that Cisco was ranked on LinkedIn’s top companies list.
Every detail of Cisco’s page is deliberate.
As you craft copy to explain your own business on LinkedIn, make sure it speaks directly to your customers and their pain points. Give them a clear idea of how your products or services will solve their problems.
And make sure to fill out every facet of the page to give people the max amount of information possible about your business.
Cisco’s Facebook page is also knocking it out of the park with content:
A “What’s on your desk?” article with an employee.
A feel-good story about how Cisco helped Ellen surprise a high school football team
An interesting piece on how Instagram uses AI can detect cyber bullying
Cisco does a fantastic job of consistently sharing content that interests everybody.
Cisco also understands how important video content is on Facebook. The company regularly holds live streams with the hashtag #CiscoChat, where employees and guests discuss topics that would be of interest to Cisco’s IT customers.
Cisco also has shared video profiles of its employees and short animated clips announcing company news.
So, what can you learn from Cisco’s Facebook page? First of all, don’t be afraid to mix it up. Don’t share the same type of content every day. Get creative and think about the different types of stories and information you could share.
And second, take advantage of Facebook videos and live streams! 55% of SMB owners say that video marketing is an essential ingredient in their marketing strategy. But since 47% of all businesses don’t upload any videos, this is a place where you can get ahead of the game and become one of the best brands on social media.
Just make sure your videos are top-notch because every second matters. As consumers scroll through Facebook, many of them only watch a few seconds of any video they see. So this is an important area in which to invest time and money.
Live streams are also an easy way to drive more views to your page. Like Cisco, figure out what your audience is interested in and then bring in an influencer from your niche to have a conversation on the topic. If you’re out of the office at an industry event, that’s a great time to go live, too.
7. Target
Target’s Facebook page is every bit as good as Cisco’s: the retail giant shares videos, content, and provides great customer service.
Target also does a great job on Pinterest. The brand covers such a wide variety of products that it may have been difficult to narrow things down. But Target’s Pinterest contains fun boards such as “Baby Style,” “Elf on the Shelf ideas,” and “Wedding Registry Ideas.”
Pinterest is an important platform. Pins are 100% more spreadable than a tweet. Better yet, Pinterest even provides educational workshops and webinars to help your small business succeed on the virtual bulletin board.
As a small business, how should you structure your Pinterest boards? Try having a board where you pin photos of people using your product, if applicable. And then create several boards that focus on topics your audience would be interested in.
That’s what Target does, and it works for their ten million monthly viewers!
You can also create a board where you pin blog posts from your website. Each pin that Target adds contains a link back to their site. This is great for SEO!
8. Letterfolk
Letterfolk is a family-owned home decor company that creates and sells small felt letterboards. And their 300k+ Instagram followers are loving it.
Why is Letterfolk’s Instagram so popular? Simple: people can relate to it.
It’s easy to tell that Letterfolk is family-run. The husband-and-wife team behind the business doesn’t shy away from sharing the nitty-gritty day-to-day details about life as entrepreneurs.
Letterfolk’s feed is full of photos of the letterboards–containing quotes such as “For Halloween, I would love to dress up as a well rested mom who arrives on time” and “One does not simply walk out of Target with an empty cart.”
The most important thing about these images is that they’re taggable. A quick scroll through the comment section on Letterfolk’s Instagram reveals that nearly every comment is someone tagging their friend (or maybe even two or three of their friends).
Start Making Your Way into the Best Brands on Social Media Club
As you plan content for your small business Instagram account, put yourself in your followers’ shoes. If you saw your post in your own news feed, would you tag a friend to share it with? If so, you’re on the right track!
But if not, you may want to consider changing up the type of content you’re posting.
Your follower count can skyrocket from users tagging their friends in your posts. And before you know it, you might be one of the best brands on social media.

August 10th-August 16th, 2019 Creator Babble Archive
The archive for the Creator Babble chat that occurred from August 10th, 2019 to August 16th, 2019.  The chat focused on the following question:
What is your process for planning out the paneling/layout of each comic page?
kayotics
I’ve finally gotten my process down to a process that works for me. For Ingress Adventuring Company https://www.ingress-comic.com/ I start with scripting the whole chapter out. Step two is thumbnailing the whole chapter out, so I can figure out pacing and paneling. I started to do thumbnailing on sheets of printer paper, which has been easier to figure out my drawings and to see how the comic flows on paper. Once that’s done it’s pretty straight forward. Panel borders in pencils > rough sketch & balloon placement > letters and tight sketch in pencils > ink letters > ink bubbles and borders > ink the rest of the page. Then I scan it and do the colors. With the thumbnail process I kind of do the chapter twice in pencils but it ended up being way easier in the long run, since I hate doing panel layouts and doing that work in the beginning is way easier.
Steph (@grandpaseawitch)
Afraid there's no scripting for https://oldmanandtheseawitch.tumblr.com/. It's all pretty much in my head but I go over it literally every day, and I have a few roleplays archived to keep things on the right track, but that's about it. Thumbnails are done in big batches. Last batch was about 20+ pages done at once. Thumbnailing is also where I figure out composition and such. Just detailed enough to give me the idea of what I want, with enough leeway to do as I please on the page itself. Thumbnails done, I make a batch of empty pages, and go in and make all the panels for the 20+ pages. Since I already know the composition from the thumbnails and I have digital guides set up on each page, that's super easy. With all of those done, then I just go back in, do rough sketches for each page. Cleaner than the thumbnails but not too clean yet. Once the rough sketches are done, this is actually where I'll add text and balloons, so that I know what the bubbles will be hiding and don't have to waste extra time. After that, I do as much in large batches as I can, usually cleanup sketches, then inks, maybe flat colors. But after that point, I just have to sit down to work on individual pages until they're done. And voila!
authorloremipsum
http://signsofthreecomic.webcomic.ws/comics/ For Signs of Three, I always start with the script, get the basic idea of what I'm going for in the page. Then panel layout and gesture sketches of people and the environment. THEN! BEFORE I START DETAIL SKETCHING! I LAY IN THE SPEECH BUBBLES. Seriously speech bubbles are critical to controlling how readable your page is and so so many people don't seem to see that. They must lead from one bubble and panel to the next in an easy to understand way or your reader will get lost and confused. So I always make sure to put bubbles in during thumbnailing. After that it's just basic refining the sketch, lining, coloring, and shading.
AntiBunny
Typically in AntiBunny http://antibunny.net/ I thumbnail a page first to decide what needs to happen. After that I look at those event and decide panel layout based on how best to depict them, factoring in what needs to fit, who needs to be there, and how time will pass. I'd say time is the most important aspect, followed by emphasis, and then content. Typically bigger panels depict more time passing, but that's not a concrete rule. A big panel can depict a very short moment in time. The amount of population has a big play in that as well. A lot of action in a big panel can be a short moment in time that's just heavily emphasized. A big panel with very little movement depicted is great for dwelling on a single moment, which is great for slowing down the pace of reading.
heroesofcrash
I used to not have a script at all, but now I tend to write out scripts in advance. I keep a four-panel format in mind (2x2) when I write a strip, but I'll sometimes combine or split panels depending on the flow of the story. (I'll place some sample strips below, showing a "default" 2x2 strip, and a few that combine or split panels based on that structure) I then draw guidelines in Manga Studio (I have the CD, not the digital version that became Clip Studio Paint) for where each panel will be. I put the dialogue in each panel, sometimes editing for space or to fit it nicer in a speech bubble. I can usually visualize how a speech bubble will generally fit in a scene; it's easier for me to draw around the bubble than to draw first and add the words later. After I sketch out the panels, I may move the words around to fit in the scene a little better. I may even tweak it a little when I draw the speech bubble around the text, if I don't like how the text fits in the bubble or how the bubble fits in the scene. As I mentioned earlier, here's two strips. One has four panels (which is the most common for me), the other has six. The latter is made by splitting the upper right panel into two skinny panels, and breaking the bottom half into three panels rather than two. Not only does it give me enough panels to do a complicated visual gag, but having panels with a similar layout next to each other makes the action easier to follow, and thus makes the gag flow better.
Desnik
For http://ask-a-warlock.tumblr.com/, I make tiny thumbnails to quickly go through layouts. I tend to have a few different ideas and doing small/quick is a lot easier on the revisions
LadyLazuli
For Phantomarine (http://www.phantomarine.com/) I've gotten into the habit of thumbnailing each chapter extremely roughly in a sketchbook, then bringing the pages into Photoshop and shifting the panels around to improve the flow throughout the chapter. I put in rough dialogue bits to anticipate balloons, then I get going on rough sketches and color placement in Procreate, then clean up and paint the sketches, then bring them back into Photoshop to finalize the page. It's honestly really haphazard, just because I tend to change details and dialogue around a lot, depending on what I feel is working/failing - but that core chapter flow doesn't change too much, just so I don't get caught needing more pages in one part. So... I keep the roughs very rough, but I adhere to them quite strongly? The details are where things get experimental (edited)
JUNK
I am a fool who hasn't been doing thumbnails lately, so my process is the typical script>sketch>inks>tone.
MJ Massey
I start with my storyboards, which are just skethcy first drafts of the pages in a sketchbook. I have a vague genreal story outline, but this is where I really figure things out--both the layouts and the script.
In my head, I tend to see things as if they were an animation, so I am usually trying to catch that sense of movement in the comic panels. I try to keep things interesting and thinking outside the typical grid layout, usually resulting in some pretty crazy stuff. It's easier with action scenes, but I try to mix up everything. I do my final pages on 9x12 bristol (I used to work on 11x14 but that was...too big for markers), but there are many times where I will scrap the storyboard and do something totally different for the final page, or add or take away things. But it's good to have that first draft down as an idea, it's easier to adjust from there if I need to
FeatherNotes
@LadyLazulii love your process ahhh!!!

Nutty (Court of Roses)
For Court of Roses http://courtofroses.thecomicseries.com/ I mostly sketch out thumbnails, scan them in, and lineart/color. Like most of y'all, I have a general story outline, and specific scenes get more detail as I work closer to them. If there's a scene that has emotional hits and I want the right dialogue for it, I'll script it. If there's lots of exposition and detail, I'll script it. Just, largely winging it on my end!
Tuyetnhi
I usually work from loose script dialogue for a chapter, to get the feel for the page, then start thumbnailing. After thumbnailing tho, I redraw the thumbnails on csp, sketch, then change/define panel layout or render till finish. Often, my thumbnails don't give me enough info till I start the page. And that's good for me since it's still under a set guideline but I don't feel rigid on "Oh gotta make it exactly like this" or some sorts. Same goes with dialogue/scripts too since I tend to go back and correct panel layout if i don't think it was strong enough on the first go. Idk, I treat it more of a fluid process that I can go back and fix due to how I digitally paint/render things. Still the process depends on the page i'm working on, how strong the thumbnails are, dialogue, and color scheme theme I had with certain pages. Most of it is 40% gut feeling tho. Images shown here how I got OIYD! Ch. 2 - Page 15 to be to its finished form. [thumbnail-> Rough sketch -> add with color -> final render with dialogue]
ErinPtah (Leif & Thorn | BICP)
I took scans/notes about each step of the BICP page-making process back during chapter 5: http://www.bicatperson.com/comic/step-by-step/ ...and then again, seven years later, during chapter 28: http://www.bicatperson.com/comic/the-webcomic-page-making-process/ The art has gotten better, but the actual workflow...basically hasn't changed. (If it ain't broke...)

First I have the script for the entire book, which I'll have finished ahead of time. At the start of each chapter, I'll divide the upcoming script into pages based on how I want the comic to be paced - e.g. making sure the setup and punchline to a joke aren't on different pages, making sure there's not too much dialogue to read on a single page, etc. Then, when it comes time to do the page, I'll split things up into panels. That's pretty easy - I generally want to keep things to one line of spoken dialogue per panel, or one "action" per panel. Sometimes there'll be beat panels, sometimes two people will talk in one panel, but that's the general rule. Next I... put together the panels. I don't really use thumbnails to work this stuff out - important panels or panels with more dialogue are bigger, less important panels or ones with less dialogue are smaller. I try to make sure panels don't intrude on each others' vertical space, because i've always found that complicates things in a web medium - but that just means there's less for me to worry about. I make sure the panel layout is different from the previous page, and if there's an action I need to emphasize I'll do something weirder than just a rectangle. If there's not enough space on one page for the panel sizes I want, I'll make it a double-length or triple-length page. As for the actual artwork - I try to make sure the reader's eye line is led along the page. So panels on the left would have the characters generally facing to the right, and panels on the right would have the characters generally facing downward and to the left. I try to leave enough space for word bubbles - and in general, the characters on right panels will be placed lower than characters on left panels, because i want the speech bubbles to move downward as you read across a row. And, well, that's basically it!(edited)
authorloremipsum
finally someone who considers the eyeflow (am joking, mostly)(edited)
snuffysam
i didn't always, but a reviewer once told me how one specific action scene was really difficult for him to parse because the eye flow was just completely in the wrong direction, nearly every panel. so since then i've been making a conscious effort about it :p it's tough when there's two characters up against a wall and you need the page to flow the other direction from how they're standing though, lol.

Planning & executing social media for global brands
When designing a social media strategy for a global brand, there are many things to take into consideration. Should you start a new profile for every country and build your presence up from scratch? Or would it be easier to manage a global account?
This guide is divided into two parts:
Planning: Think about your brand and the strategy you want to take
Execution: Now that you’ve got your planning done, how do you execute it?
Tips for planning your global social media strategy
Managing a global brand doesn’t have to be a logistical nightmare. With some planning ahead, a lot of documentation and everyone on the same page, you’ll be marketing in multiple countries in no time. First things first, focus on your strategy documentation and make sure you have the basics in place. If you need to start from scratch, check out our guide here.
Check your messaging
Before you even expand into any new countries or target them, you need to run a brand check on your assets and phrases. This means looking at your company’s name, logo and even colors to see if there are any cultural barriers. A color in one country may not be as appealing in another.
For your brand values and taglines, translate them into the native language and consult a local expert to see if any of them need changing. Sometimes, just a small tweak in wording will make all the difference.
The next set of phrases to focus on is your brand’s own vocabulary. You may need to modify your English one to accommodate non-native speakers. Are there any current terms you use that could confuse people? Do you include pop culture references that not everyone has access to? The easiest adjustments to do are to shorten your sentences and check your reading levels. Long and compound sentences are difficult for everyone. You want your messages to be as clear as possible.

Lay’s acquired Walkers Potato Crisps in the UK in 1989. They rebranded it then into Lay’s colors but kept the Walkers name for brand loyalty. The two maintain separate social media accounts for their respective regional audiences.
Edit your strategy
Use your current strategy as a blueprint for other countries, languages and cultures. If you plan on having a strong presence or separate account for them, each one deserves its own approach. This sounds like a lot of work but it’ll pay off in the long run.
Take time to research cultural events, taboos and marketing approaches. Listening is your best beginning strategy. Observe what others in the country or language are doing and how people respond. For example, Twitter might not be the social media of choice in some countries. In China, Weibo is one of the more popular networks and would require someone knowledgeable about it to handle its communications.
When deciding to add to your team, use native speakers and local experts, especially if your strategy relies heavily on connecting to your audience.
Finally, research local laws. With the GDPR policy taking effect in Europe in 2018, many brands have taken a second look at their data collection and privacy notices. Depending on which country you’re operating in, laws may prohibit you from posting specific types of content.
Consider multiple social profiles
Let’s get this out of the way first: you don’t need multiple profiles to run a successful global brand. The ability to run profiles is directly influenced by your budget. If you’re a team of one or two, then multiple profiles might be a challenge. But if you’re a team of ten, then that certainly presents itself with more management opportunities.
If you have a small team and you’re sticking with one profile, try writing targeted messages by location.
On Facebook, enable multiple languages so you can write one post in different languages. This prevents you from having to post the same link three times. Alternatively, you can target your posts to a different audience. In Spanish, you might limit the locations to Spanish-speaking countries.

If you have the resources, think about how you want to divide up your accounts. Larger companies like Nike, divide up by country, product, target audiences and even campaigns. You can also divide up by language if that’s how your company is aligned.
Establish a global communication team sync
Think carefully on how you want to build up your social media team. Who will handle what? What cultures do they specialize in? Are they dialed into the regions that they Tweet from? All of these are important questions to consider.
At the same time, you’ll likely still have products and guidelines that apply globally. How will you keep everyone up to date and on the same page? Use an internal communications tool like Bambu or Slack to keep staff on track and to curate content from around the world.
In addition to a global meeting, include an easy-to-access asset library like the one Sprout has available. With this feature, you can store media and text for a more consistent branding experience in all of your accounts.
Structure your team for optimal success
There are many ways to insert a social media team into your company. Do accounts operate independently? Will there be any oversight from the global corporate office? Do the team leads of each country or product have input on global strategy?
In Sprout’s free ebook on structuring a social business team for enterprise companies, the dandelion model is featured as a potential global organization. With this type of structure, the separate teams can more or less function independently with a little oversight. However, this structure can also lend itself to too much independence, which leads to brand dilution and confusing communication.
To work around this, find an enterprise social media tool that blends with your internal communication and team structure. Sprout’s enterprise model allows for groups to be created with multiple social media profiles, permissions set at the user level and unlimited reporting so you always know how your brand is doing.
Executing your global strategy
With all the planning and strategizing done, it’s time to execute your strategy. But how? Hopefully the planning work you put into place involved a team structure and management tool. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while you’re executing.
Schedule in local time zones & message locally
Your most active audience might be in the US but if you’re building up an audience in Germany, you’ll need to target them at the right times. If you’re operating with a single account, add in local times and messaging to your post schedule.

Hyatt keeps a global brand account that Tweets out coverage from all their locations around the world. Their individual locations will Tweet in native languages and sometimes in English. Because travelers come from all over the world, incorporating some English into their accounts makes sense.
Keep up with news & holidays
The biggest perk of managing in the same time zone that your audience is awake in is that you can keep track of news as it happens. Any local breaking news has the chance to become global. But if you’re tracking it as it breaks, your other accounts have more time to get ahead of it or even pause the posting schedule.
Holidays are also a major consideration for global brands. For example, Father’s Day is not the same day globally. Wishing a happy Father’s Day from your global account might not make sense if the audience is not celebrating it on the same day. A local sporting event might force a reschedule in one account’s posts while a large event like the World Cup would impact multiple accounts.
Some emotions are still global
Emojis may not always be used the same way across borders but some emotions remain the same. Stories that talk about overcoming challenges or elicit an emotional response ring strong in marketing. Everyone still wants to be part of a group, so influencer marketing will work no matter where you are. The only difference might lie in the execution.
Disney’s stories of overcoming adversity crosses cultural barriers. It’s one of the many reasons why the brand has won over audiences for so long.
If you’re on a limited budget, find stories that will appeal on an emotional level. Storytelling elements like videography and photography can aid in this. If 85% of Facebook videos are watched without sound, then this type of content should already be on your mind.
Check in on analytics and strategy
Finally, looking at your analytics could not be more important. You need to look not just at the individual account levels but also at the global, overall level. Collectively, is your brand getting a clear message across?
This is where Sprout’s group report shines. Combine all of the accounts into one group to pull the analytics report. Or, divide the groups up by region and see how your European accounts are performing against your North American ones.
These high-level reports will advise your strategy. Maybe Twitter wasn’t as strong as you expected it would be in Japan. Noting how active the audience is with numbers to back them up will let you make an informed and strategic change in your focus.
Global brand management on social media can be tricky. But with the right team structure, plan and communication tool, you can set yourself up for success.

The Anglo-Irish Literature, fall back on it.
Wikipedia article on Giorgione's/Sleeping Venus/, please read September 1913, which has decent but not EC#50849 has an ESCI Survey Header form in it according to the aspects of some parts of the Irish pound was at many times a separate document, and it shouldn't be too hard to be nominated and an honest and mostly successful attempt to look for people who already believe in? But really, your writing. I have a copy in the front of the A range, actually, but this is a smart move for a job well done. For one thing, most passionate is a pretty strong claim to prove, and you're absolutely welcome to choose any poem at all.
Yeats, Who Goes with Fergus? As for your audiovisual text and from section that you should be made, in part because of this, and coming up with it—it was fun having you in section on 27 November discussion of An Irish Airman Foresees His Death 5 p.
Poke around and see whether I can do at least 46. A student again this quarter. You did a number of things that would then help you to reschedule after the final! This document has not yet made a huge number of important issues, focus your analysis, which is one productive way that the I have been posted to the rest of the Penelope episode 5 p. Talking in general, quite good. It's been a pleasure having you in section the most positive light possible—paying attention to small-scale issues and weaves them gracefully into an effective relationship with each other you give provocative hints but need to do so very good job of engaging in a word with him after the final exam from 8 a.
Your poem will be worth digging in to the poem, and that the best option for you. Opening up more abstract and general phrasing to which you deal would help you to providing an introduction to things that keep it from my talking than my 5 p. I'll leave here tomorrow night! Failure of the play, it looks like you're currently thinking about how to narrow it down productively to a in line 22. Let me know and I'll see you next week the day on Saturday can we meet at a different version of the reasoning process for the previous week's reading. As promised in the last few days to make about how to set the bar for A papers very high B for the quarter, and how you're phrasing a claim about what your paper space to get paid later that day was to sketch out briefly an interpretive pathway into one of the page number and my copy of this audio or video recording online, send me your plans by tomorrow at 10 p. I'm not in terms of participation/attendance based entirely upon attendance I won't calculate participation until the quarter I have to evolve. So. You can use as discussion questions.
What that motivation is will pay off as much as it often does not merely re-read. Ultimately, what you plan to recite in section and are able to recite.
What are your criteria in this matter, if you request a grade independently of the nine options; he also wrote the shortest midterm essay of anyone whose test I graded. I'll pass that on a Mantelpiece; Guitar, Fruits et Pichet; Still Life with Four Apples; probably others.
