Hamilton’s Choice by Jack Casey

At some point of being in amrev you have to get used to the fact that things like this have extremely good ratings without having to bother about quality or even remote historical accuracy. It’s painful to say because I like it as a piece of media but musical played a big part in stigmatisation of old prejudices about Burr and putting Hamilton on a pedestal he doesn’t deserve. Tho even musical couldn’t possibly create such an atrocity that this book is.

Yeah, it’s not good. At all. I won’t give it any credit whatsoever because one good small passage in the middle of the most disgusting and harmful historical novel you have ever seen can’t possibly make it better.

Hamilton’s choice is awful from the plot to writing style.

The last one is jumpy and inconsistent, there’s no transition between scenes, you can see Burr’s words in his mansion and the next thing you see it’s Hamilton’s quote. The first one tries to cover blatant slander that was repeated about Burr for ages with historical accuracy. “Look, I put one quote from his letter, I know what I’m talking about!!! Believe me, believe me, believe me!” Which is deeply funny considering that during the reading you can clearly see that the whole story is solely founded on musical and nothing else, you can see it in certain turns of plot, it’s basically on the end of your tongue: “I’ve seen it in Hamilton”. Yeah, not good.

And isn’t it a pretty comfortable position indeed? To monetise your weak and defective fanfic while actively covering it by authority of actual historians and workers of museums to give some illusory weight to your novel without having to put actual afford in it… it’s very plausible to be able to say oh well, I did consult professionals here. I’m really curious what actual people the author consulted think about the final product, I really am. Because I really doubt he used anything out of what they said to him. [sounds familiar? My Theodosia comes to mind]

I won’t go in a heavy details of plot, it’s enough to say the whole thing is boring, disrespectful and simply remote from all historical figures it mentions.

But I’ll mention that this book is also heavily homophobic. Biphobic to be more specific. Let’s just say that if author points at one [presumably] bisexual character and proceeds to say this character into Bestiality as well, the author isn’t your friend.

Long story short, this novel has nothing to offer to reader. It’s pretty boring, lacks any historical accuracy and will give you only many times repeated stories about Burr that James Cheetham created in 19th century. And really, go check them if you want. They’ve been written so long ago and yet they’re much more creative and fun then anything Jack Casey can offer you.

I'm not too sure about everyone going "wOwIE!!!oPenLy gAy gEnEraL?!" (I definitely think he should be known for more than his orientation, but that isn't today's topic.)

I don't really think anyone was, like, OPENLY gay at the time. He didn't just go around town saying "HEY GOVERNMENT!1!1!1 I KISS DUDES!!" as far as I'm concerned. It's more like, he went around kissing dudes and then the government found out and was anky. (DW mom it's only kissing this is a SFW blog pls don't kill mehh). Although a large number of people knew about his reputation, that doesn't make him openly gay. I think it's more that he was outed, and then just kind of learned to live with it.
