✨ Spooky Recs✨

I read a lot of fanfictions... More than I am proud of. I thought I should recommend as I go before I lose sight of their existence among the sea of my favorites.

Since past few days I have been craving for some creepy, unnerving fanfics that will keep me restless and awake at night. I remembered my favorites and wanted to read more of the kind so I looked up, patiently going through each story that sounded compelling. I also revisited old stories for nostalgia's sake.

Of course, rare as they are, in Naruto fandom no less, it's even harder to find a horror and mystery fic that is well written, not dropped under 2 chapters, and really keeps your attention.

Genre: Horror, Mystery, Comedy

I've rated 4 aspects of the work -

Writing – I don't judge writing based solely on the grammar and vocabulary. I also consider how the author expands upon a subject, if they are consistent with the facts, if they are able to keep the attention of the readers regardless of their creative writing skills.

Characters – If the characters are well-developed, in their given character, if OCs have any real significance to the story.

Plot – How gripping is the storyline, if the story sticks to its original plot, the structure of the story, plot holes.

Flow – Mother-of-slow-burn, slow-but-steady, steady, fast, I-am-speed

When one of the greatest medical-nin in the world goes missing in what should have been a simple delivery to the Land of Spring’s Hidden Snow Village, the rest of Team 7 must reunite to find her. But even the most powerful team of shinobi will find themselves challenged in a battle against the supernatural. With Sasuke's return, vengeful ghosts of the past will test him and his love.

My thoughts : One of the best stories I've read in a while, and top tier SS stories. I read this in one sitting. I never listen to music while reading, preferring silence, but for this one, I suggest you do as the author says. Also, keep some tissues and food with you. This story is major in mystery and minor in horror but otherwise full of SS fluff.

Flow: Steady, if a bit confusing (but that's why it's mystery)

Kyuro : silver_shot || T || AO3 || SasuSaku || Mystery || Post-Canon || Complete

“Oh,” says Naruto, “well, its sort of like that. Except in this village, the story has a way more darker ending – it basically goes like this: the girl and the guy plan to run away together. The guy steals a bunch of treasure, and stashes it away. But then, when he goes to get the girl at her village, he kills her and decides to run away with all that money. But then he is killed by the guards of the girls village and now they're both dead and the treasure is hidden away somewhere”. Sasuke stares blankly at the blond, “that story makes no sense”.

My thoughts : I know you must be thinking the same thing as Sasuke – "makes no sense". I did too, but it's a pretty cool short story. It lies on the funny, creepy side that slowly starts to lose its funny touch. SS makes stupid mistakes later on but it could be because they are MCs. The ending is very ambiguous. It's not my favorite mystery but it is something. Enjoyable read but not something I will pick again.

Moon stuttering in the sky : xfrinz || T || AO3 || Gen || Mystery || Pre-Shippuden || One-shot

Kakashi is suspicious of many things about Haruno Sakura. Too many things about her don't make sense, with too many incongruous explanations.

My thoughts : Author of this story just summarised Pre-Shippuden in less than 4k words and made some tiny changes to it. Not much though. One of my favorite gen fics yet. Read it if you haven't yet. You'll feel more sad than thrilled tbh. But worth it.

Flow: I-am-Speed

Breath mints : silver_shot || T || AO3 || SasuSaku || Comedy-Mystery || Post-Canon || Ongoing (maybe)

Their home no longer exists with the life it once had – in fact no settlement thrives anymore; they exist only in a snapshot that contradicts time itself. Families within their own homes sleep in a slumber that they cannot wake from. Those that were chatting on the street prior to the event simply drop their heads and remain unresponsive.

My thoughts : I picked it up for Mystery but I stayed for Comedy. But of course that's not to say supernatural elements in this story is not it, but it sure pales in comparison to effortless humor in this story. Lee and Kiba pair is something you don't see often but they get along too well here. Charactisation is on point as well. SS angst! + NS angst (but it's downplayed)

The Curse : sincerelyLen || T || FFN || SasuSaku || Horror || Post-Canon || Ongoing

Team 7 is unexpectedly assigned an S-Ranked Mission involving an unsolved mystery of 10 years. An eerie adventure that will test their teamwork, strengths, and greatest fears. Do you believe in Curses?

My thoughts : My all-time favourite horror Naruto fanfiction. To me, this sets the standard of how mystery and horror elements should be handled. I have never been able to get this story out of my mind even it's been years. Perfect charactisation of Team 7 with Smart-yet-Stupid!Sakura, I-can-fight-aliens-and-reanimated-corpses-but-keep-ghosts-away-from-me!Naruto and I-dont-get-paid-enough-for-this!Sasuke. I especially love OCs here. They kinda reminds me of Pillars from KnY. You must read this story, loosely based on Zombie apocalypse + curse concept.

Silent High : Istoria || T || FFN || Gen || Mystery || Post-Canon || Complete

A bit of the Silent Hill series mixed in with Naruto. Trapped in an illusion whose rules are unknown, they struggle to find answers before darkness consumes them.

My thoughts : One of the best mystery fanfictions I've read. I especially loved how this story handled Genjutsu in the best possible way it could without it turning into some cliche, ghost story. Though really, this story has shown what my greatest fear actually is. I will never be able to leave my back open to a wheelchair. This story has simple writing yet it gives you creeps with the twists and turns. A must read one because it is unlike any other in this list.

Silence of the Damned : Daystar Clarion || T || FFN || Gen || Psychological Horror, Mystery(?) || Pre-Shippuden || One-Shot

When Naruto wakes up to a dead body in his bathroom, he begins a quick spiral into madness.

My thoughts : Listen to Halsey's Control while reading this. Quite chilling, deals with mental issues and morbid but in a fascinating way. It gives a new meaning to Dark!Naruto, but one that actually makes sense. I never saw the ending coming... I had something else in mind and I was convinced it would be, but nope. Here's a sequel to this One-Shot (Uzumaki's War) which I never picked up.

To the Victor : Letta || T || FFN || NaruSaku || Psychological Horror || Shippuden || One-Shot

Naruto loses the fight and Sakura is a trophy of war.

My thoughts : A very twisted NS, if you squint. It's not horror but it might as well be... it is still a disturbing story to see from the eyes of Sakura. Quite chilling to be in Sakura's shoes. But I love this because it is one shot and I loved the ending.

Under the Skin : BukkakeNoJutsu || T || FFN || Team 8 || Body Horror || Pre-Shippuden || One-Shot

Your actions don't make you a monster. Your reasons do.

My thoughts : There's a reason why Shino is my favourite team 8 member. In my opinion, Shino is also one of the strongest Shinobi of his generation. His clan techniques are just that horrifying. This story is testament to that. He is so terrible.

Instant Message : Keelah || T || FFN || SasuSaku || Murder mystery || Modern AU || Incomplete

She gave him names to kill, in order not to be killed herself. But having blood on her hands was turning out to be much worse than dying. "…There's still round 2…3…4…" When does this game end? She asked. "Don't you see, Sakura?" He said, "It never does."

My thoughts : I read this story a long time ago and have read this twice. Personally, it has the most interesting concept of all stories in the list. It reminds me of Vocaloid series, "Bookmark of the end". Kind of. To those who are thinking of picking this up, go ahead! It's a great book and has one of the best suspense I've read in Fandom. BUT, it has been stopped in mother-of-all-cliffhangers and Author is MIA for 4 years now. But, all things considered, it remains to be one of the best stories I've read.

Monomoth : Ohtze || M || FFN/AO3 || SasuSaku || Horror || AU || Incomplete

Everything ends, eventually. Eight years after the war, Sakura's unhinged and Sasuke's obsessed. The fields are filled with corpses.

My thoughts : I read this story right after "The Curse", my favourite. From what I remember, Sakura and Sasuke are both mentally deranged, in different ways. Lots of death and gore to stomach, so not for weak readers. There's no speak of fluff in this one. Zero, Zilch, Nada. I wouldn't call it your classic 'Horror', but it is very disturbing, so psychological horror is more like it. Don't eat food while reading this one. Did I mention how Sakura is mentally disturbed beyond help in this one? And Sasuke is obsessed. If these suit your tastes, go ahead.

Caring? Check. Nursed Jihoon back to health when he was sick and continued doing so even when he wasn't.

Hottie? Check. The most attractive man out there, Jihoon the lucky bastard.

An otherwordly being? UM HE IS LITERALLY A FREAKING VAMPIRE??? HELLO???

Soonyoung was the embodiment of your wildest dreams like even though Jihoon was actually on the brink of death, like my man fucking touched god, he was still horny when he got close to Soonyoung and kept smelling him like he was ambrosia or something. Then he had a wet dream about him. Understandable.

VERY cute story. Soonyoung got like the biggest dick out there too.

Rambling About my OCs: Take 3

With Season 5 of tma coming out, I figured it’s time for me to actually talk about my tma oc, Esme

(I’m going to try and keep this short but I have a LOT of headcanons and feelings about her so no guarantees)

TW for gore, bones, scars, fleshy stuff

Esme is from the Usher Foundation who is basically a transfer to the Magnus Institute because she is an expert on Leitners and similar books. Elias was like, hm, how do I track down the idiot trying to undermine my evil schemes, and he started off looking for a nonviolent approach before -brutal pipe murder- However, bureaucracy tied up the paperwork, and she didn’t get sent there until after Leitner was dead, and shortly before Jon’s name is cleared.

She started to learn about Leitners and other books (though of course his library was the most expansive) because she had a run in with one when she was young. It was flesh-based, but instead of bones it dealt with skin. Mainly ripping it off of yourself. She was compelled to cut the skin from her legs while reading The Butcher’s Block and was barely found by her father in time before she bled out. Because of this, though, she has massive scars, mainly on her thighs, so she never wears shorts or skirts and nobody knows about them save for her parents and her doctors. She started doing research on books and the Usher Foundation scooped her up to do work for them.

Nobody trusts her, naturally, when she shows up in London. She was called in by Elias and they’re just starting to understand how much of a prick he is – doesn’t help that he didn’t let anyone know to expect a new employee from America. The Archives crew takes her out for drinks like “hey our boss is a prick and we’re all trapped here” and she’s just “uhhh… all this talk about Brexit has really messed you guys up, huh.” But at the same time, she knows it’s true; she literally has the scars to prove it.

When they meet in the tunnels to plot against Elias, she does come along, and convinces Jon to use his compulsion powers to get her to reveal that she’s not hiding anything about this, all she’s hiding is that she carved off her own skin because of a Leitner and she doesn’t let anyone know about it, ever, except here, because she has no choice but she wants them to trust her. During the Unknowing, she stays behind to run interference in case Martin’s arson plan doesn’t work or someone else stumbles on Melanie while she’s snooping.

Esme has always known that she’s moderately marked by the Flesh, but she also has an intense desire to Know things, to figure out how the books have powers, how the Entities manifest themselves in our world and in objects, and not just allowing “idk fear magic” as an answer. During the Flesh attack, Jared Hopworth seeks her out and reminds her that she is one of them and the sooner she learns that, the better, but, until then, he’s going to take something so that she remembers. He removes her right fibula in such a way that she has trouble walking afterwards and has to use a cane at all times.

But, because of this and the Unknowing, Esme pours herself into a guidebook to the Fears, a sort of manual for the next generations of Archival Assistants who are tasked with stopping rituals and understanding the horrors of the world. And, in so doing, she finally meets Helen.

It wasn’t that Esme avoided Helen, but she never had much need to see her, so she kept her distance. When it comes to understanding the Spiral, though, who better to ask than the Spiral itself?

Helen is skeptical, and it’s not as if there’s any possible way of understanding the Spiral except in understanding that it can’t be understood. They get talking on the nature of monsterhood, and Esme explains that she believes anyone can be a monster, it isn’t a transformation that just happens when you serve an Entity, etc, it’s in one’s actions. And eating people’s fear is weird and she’s glad it’s not happening to her, but at the same time, is it all that much different than a hawk eating a mouse? It’s a twisted part of the circle of life, and she understands that.

We’re keeping this short, so I’m not going to go into detail about the long and extravagant flirting that takes place here, featuring Helen raising up Esme’s chin while discussing whether or not she’s a monster and Esme realizing that Helen could be as monstrous as she wanted to her and that would be more than okay. Or the part where Esme brings her coffee with her to chat with Helen and offers her some, only for Helen to complain that it’s too sweet, and for Esme to start bringing in her super decked out coffee for herself and a hot black coffee for Helen while they hang out. Or how Helen’s door starts being more of a feature in that room because she likes hanging out with this strange assistant who doesn’t quite know who she is yet.

Anyway because I’m definitely not projecting (I would like to smooch Helen KnifeHands McWife!) Esme realizes that she feels safest when she’s with Helen, and they kiss and start their own unique relationship. Esme is allowed into the hallways of the Spiral and Helen makes a bedroom for her there, so she doesn’t have to keep sleeping on the camp cots in the basements. Helen may not need to sleep, but she winds up spending a lot of time in bed beside Esme.

The first time Esme wakes up there, she panics. For a brief moment, she wonders if it was all a trick, and she walked right into the Spiral without thinking, without doubting. But, as she said before, she is willing to accept that fate, because trust is more important, it’s something they all need, and she wants to trust Helen. Then Helen comes in with their usual coffee order and Esme realizes that it doesn’t have to make sense, it just has to be.

Helen has a feeling that Trevor and Julia are coming to the Archive before it happens, and she wants to keep Esme safe, so she opens up a door to somewhere else, like, “it’s okay, we’ll be safe here.” But Helen sends Esme through alone. To Hilltop Road.

Annabelle Caine owed Helen a favor (or allowed her to think the scales became unbalanced at any point), so Helen asked her to look after Esme while the Hunters are prowling around. This is also part of my headcanon that Annabelle is a rampant knitter, because here she is definitely knitting Helen and Esme matching couple scarves like “yes I know you’re freaking out but look aren’t they cute?” Esme starts asking some questions and the ones that Annabelle likes, she answers.

Especially after losing her fibula and needing a cane and to sit often, Esme has felt weak and helpless. She doesn’t want to be a burden, and that’s all she’s been recently, as evidenced by even Helen shoving her off when things were about to get hairy. And Annabelle reminds her that there’s an easy way to fix that.

There’s a man out back who is still struggling to remove the remains of the tree that had been toppled over. He’s about the same height as Esme, and it’s not like he couldn’t live without his fibula. She just has to take it.

Esme decides to give herself over to the Flesh in order to be strong enough to protect herself and the people she cares about. She apologizes, but she pries up his skin and takes the man’s fibula for herself, discovering that she doesn’t much care for the feel of bone. She can walk now, though, she can take care of herself.

Helen returns, very apologetic, but she was worried, and Esme is like, you know? It’s okay. I know now that this is how this situation had to be and check it out! I have a new leg bone!

From there, Esme leans heavily into the idea that the Web has ordained all of this, and she was always meant to serve the Flesh. And, truthfully, she enjoys it. Bones are Jared’s thing, she focuses on skin. It starts with taking skin from people to fill in the scars on her legs, just a strip here or there, and then she covers herself and becomes a patchwork of different slices of skin, all different shades and textures. Except for her face, because Helen likes it, and her private bits, because she might be taking skin off of people, but she’s not creepy. The Boneturner offers up massive amounts of fear right before the victim dies, usually, but Esme works by taking small bits, something that the person can survive, but it’s a constant reminder of what happened, of the being that came for them and how they are now a part of their collection.

Helen helps her when she first starts out, though. It’s hard to track down victims when you still have some doubts, so Helen traps people in her corridors, and allows Esme to practice. It’s like a dinner date, for people who feed on Fear.

Now, I have two avenues here. The first is that the Fearpocalypse happens.

Helen and Esme are able to do a lot more now, of course, since their Fears are more solidly manifested than ever before and there’s no need to hide. Esme and Jared run into each other and he’s like “I knew you would come around. Check out this guy’s skin I bet you’d like that.” And she’s just “Yeah this guy has a really weird looking elbow you could use that for your fifth arm.”

However, with the Eye watching literally everything now, the Fear they consume doesn’t taste right anymore. It might be easier to get fear, to constantly feast, but it isn’t the same with the Beholding corrupting each course. So, they agree to help Jon and co with whatever scheme they’re hatching to reverse course, even if it means turning against their other Avatars and maybe even their gods.

The other story here is that there’s no Fearpocalypse (at least not until later), and Helen changes. She’s seriously injured and the next manifestation of the Spiral takes over. Her name is Nia.

Esme is furious and demands Nia give back Helen, she has to. Nia has been cavalier and snarky up until she sees the tears in Esme’s eyes and she just softly apologizes, but there’s nothing she can do.

Before Helen turned (this is in all storylines), she and Esme exchanged significant jewelry. Esme gave Helen her necklace, which was the first frivolous thing she bought for herself after leaving home and starting her own life, and Helen gave her a bracelet that, well, it was important to the mortal Helen, and she’s never seen fit to take it off, even if such things don’t mean so much to her anymore. The necklace that Esme gives her, though? That means a lot.

Nia is wearing that necklace. Every other aspect of her has changed, but that necklace is still there, her memories and feelings for Esme remain. But she’s a different person now, and Esme is trying to grieve, but how much of what she felt for Helen was for the entity known as the Spiral? How much is Helen? How much is the amalgamation of everyone else the Spiral has consumed? How much is Nia?

She avoids Nia at first, but after a while she comes to terms with the fact that it isn’t Nia’s fault, and they can at least start fresh. Nia is new to the whole Spiral thing, so Esme helps her out by scaring people into the corridors (they may need to open the door themselves, but that’s a more appealing prospect when some oozing skin monster is chasing you) so that Nia can get her fear too.

And several weeks later, Esme remembers the whole thing about the Spiral is that it doesn’t make sense, and that’s just how things are sometimes. She doesn’t know how much is Helen, how much is Nia, how much is the Spiral, but she can still care for the being in front of her now.

Taking people’s skin and organs, etc, as she needs them, means that Esme is pretty much immortal. The Spiral may change faces every so often, but she always waits for them to wake up and helps them come to terms with who they are. She doesn’t fall in love with every iteration, but there’s a connection there that underlies all of that, and they become an unstoppable, horrible duo every time.

A disordered venting about RP problems:

My experience RPing with Tumblr RPing is not very extensive - goes back about five years, I think. Before that, I RPd a bit, much earlier, but for the most part the only RPing I've done is on Tumblr (and Skype, but as an extension of Tumblr RPing).

I don't like bouncing around. I tend to stick with a place that looks legit, get attached to the characters (mine and others') and stick it out, even sometimes unreasonably so. I've been in... basically three group RPs. Two of them were larger (let's say, defined as "more than around ten active players at any given time", and the third was smaller and purely reactionary, a-la "we don't like the way things are here so we'll make our own". Though not without problems (and I can't say I didn't have my part in them), it was the most drama-free as a whole. It also looks like the fourth, soon to come, might follow along the same pattern.

Despite my sample size of one, I'm confident in saying small groups have a different dynamic. Especially if they're founded by people who already know each other. Bigger groups are trickier, in many ways, and I was struck by the realisation that the different problems I encountered in both my bigger groups were representative of two ends of a spectrum. Similar things going wrong in opposite ways, so to speak.

One of them was defined by lack of forethought and planning. Indeed the whole RP just kind of happened organically, something more serious growing out of something very silly and casual. While it had its fun sides - and it was wildly fun, at times, for as long as the fun lasted - it's also obvious in retrospect how that could be a huge problem. Different players. No standardised rules or guidelines until way, waaay later in the game (after much drama had already happened). Lots of different people with different RPing backgrounds and personalities and playstyles, none of them fully on the same page. While many of the problems had to do with one or two difficult personalities in the group, that's not really the isuse. There is always a risk of... unpleasant people, no RP group is safe from them and no RP guidelines will truly protect you from someone who WANTS to start shit or manipulate things to their benefit and is cunning enough to do that. But even aside from that... the lack of regulation about who could grab what characters and how many (some players ending up with 20+ blogs), or any kind of spoken agreement about activity guidelines and replying etiquette. Lack of agreement about how "canon" certain plots were, in the RPing continuity. Lack of agreement about the continuity, period. A clash between people who wanted to develop a certain pre-planned (and rather exclusive) storyline and those who were more in it for spontaneity. It was a recipe for disaster. It didn't need to get as bad as it did, but starting off like that, it was bound to get unpleasant eventually anyway.

Now, the other group... oh, the other group. After the colourful experience of the first group, the things it offered seemed like a reassuring breath of fresh air. Planning! An almost DnD-esque level of detail to the established universe, rulebook, bestiary and lore! Basically an entire little sandbox lovingly crafted for you to play in. Transparent activity guidelines and rules! An actual mod team working to be approachable while still holding authority! New plots for everyone to participate in to be released basically by the clock, so nobody would feel left out! So lovely! Unfortunately, things are rarely as sunny as they appear. A certain type of literate, application RPs is infamous for their snobbishness and elitism, and despite the initially welcoming tone, that was exactly what this unravelled to be. On the flip side, many of the appeals of the group amounted to little more than elaborate publicity acts. Always, always must the group remain attractive and desirable to newcomers (perhaps unsurprisingly given the apparently abysmal player retention rates, both short and long-term). The tone turned out very different from what was advertised, the sandbox-like universe revealing itself to be more of a literal sandbox, with complex topics turned into gimmicks, and supernatural characters (prosecuted and feared for their in-humanity) easily and casually sharing information about their powers with near-strangers like kids on a playground comparing their toys. The "plots" thrown one's way are not only usually poorly (if at all) developed but intrusive, so that they are impossible to avoid completely even if one is not interested in them. Worse yet, the RP insists on doling out serious consequences and high-stakes crises like death, destruction, invasions of murderous monsters or malignant town-wide spells, but is curiously reluctant to allow any room for serious RPing or sense of consequences.

In fact, it's impossible to talk about consequences when even a sense of any basic continuity is thrown out the window, precluded by the occasional hiatus and re-launch and the various measures taken to make sure that new players enter onto a relatively blank slate. Yes, even if long-time residents of the area and the populace in general SHOULD remember and be affected by that politically motivated massacre half a year back, or that time monstrous vegetables SLAUGHTERED half a school of elementary schoolchildren. Thus, even though the RP is long-running (turning two years old soon), it is impossible for the setting to develop any sense of history, and instead it seems to turn more and more comically nonsensical the more tragedies befall the town and are promptly forgotten a few weeks later. Rather than a serious and in-depth setting, one begins to feel instead as if all the characters are living in a Lotus Eater-like state of vague oblivion, briefly reacting to various events but never quite letting them reach collective memory.

Now, all this might be bearable (and even fun! There's an appeal in a certain kind of wacky no-strings-attached horror-comedy-gore, no denying that), IF a couple things weren't true. a) If the RP (and specifically the mod team) didn't make such a huge deal about what a serious and respectable and serious RP it is. No OCs allowed. "We allow shipping but we don't put an emphasis on it! Please don't think this is one of those silly ship-obsessed RPs". No more than two characters allowed. Replies MUST happen every x days, and even though replies of various kinds are accepted (all prose, just different formats and individual reply lengths), only CERTAIN kinds count towards the activity requirement (???!), and a long-term failure to keep it up will end up in you getting the boot. Even if you ARE active and involved with other people and interact a lot. (Don't even get me started on that. I and about three or four other people, most of whom LEFT shortly after, ended up having our plots disrupted SIGNIFICANTLY because the mods booted - or in this case harangued into throwing in the towel and leaving in a huff - a player who was active with all of us, but wasn't active enough in "the RIGHT way" i.e. the right format. This was part of a bigger package of them caring more about keeping up certain pretenses and ticking off certain boxes to be more outwardly desirable to new applicants than the fun of the users who were already there.) b) The nit-picking. Oh god the nitpicking and micromanagement. Some of the shit I've personally seen, some of it I've heard about. It's one thing to crit a player for not being IC with a mod pre-made character. It's another thing to do that after they've been in play for A YEAR, and if you do that then, you're being blatantly disrespectful of all the development the player's put into them. And it's yet another thing to do that to someone's OC (before the 'no OCs' rule was instated). I've had mods dictate to me that my character shouldn't be reacting to x event like this or that, by listing a bunch of factors that, while possibly convincing, were only ONE possible way to interpret the big picture. For real. Psychology is complicated but for some reason all that goes out the window the moment the mod team decides they know how your character should be played (and I'm not talking about blatant realism or accuracy issues like "that's not how PTSD works" but actual decisions/ways of thinking, things that there should, in theory, be no "wrong" option with because once again, people are complicated).

Which brings me to: C) The omnipresent feeling of entitlement by the mod team aka the Powers That Be, as if they believe that theirs is such a supremely privileged, special and elite group, that they merely DEIGN to let you be a part of it. All of it manifesting in a complete lack of basic courtesy when approaching players. Or rather, any player who's been there longer than a month and who they're not actively trying to be Welcoming(TM) to. I should have seen it pretty early when I had a beef with another player who, to wit, disliked that an RP scene we had depicted her character as a "bad guy" (who was previously ESTABLISHED in canon as a psychopathic murderer!!! and the RP scene basically showed him doing more of the same!!!). She ended up badmouthing me to other players she was interacting with closely, and then they as a group complained about me to the mods, in which she twisted a certain conversation we'd had over Skype into something that reflected very badly on me, along the lines of me forcing her to RP a scene she would be triggered by. Now. This was resolved when I provided the mods with copied Skype messages (direct Skype quotes, a format that, in theory, can't be doctored) that showed she was fabricating that conversation - that she had outright told me she WOULD be okay with doing that scene. She eventually got booted for that (and other stuff). And all would have been well if it weren't for the way I had been initially addressed by the mods, and the condescending, denigrating, making you feel like shit TONE of it. Going from zero, utter peace, to "you have an attitude problem and you need to stop now or we'll kick you out". They also tacked on about half a dozen minor "offenses" I had done, like rambling too much about how the reasons I liked a school subject someone else disliked in the ooc chat, or trying TOO hard to get involved in plots, or other bullshit things that the people involved hadn't even complained to them about. I later realised that this, too, was a Pattern. Whenever they went to you with any sort of grievance, whether from their own side or from another player, they would tack on about half a dozen other "transgressions" you had made, sometimes making them up entirely out of thin air. (Other examples include: Me trying to "enforce a headcanon" by having my character react x way. I then pointed out that the "headcanon" I was allegedly """"enforcing"""" was the information stated on THEIR blog about how characters are large are reacting to a previous major town-wide event. (To wit: the information stated that the Event, a violent and deadly clash between two groups of people, exacerbated tensions between them and led to more mistrust between them. My character, who belongs to ONE group, was being mistrustful of the OTHER group. And somehow, this was not okay. Yes. That's it. That is literally how asinine it got. But then again, it's not surprising - as I explain later, it wasn't baout the offenses making sense. It was about getting to make me feel shitty for something) Or: I was being "inconsiderate" by having my character "out" the supernatural status of another character whose player was no longer in the group, and who they were not in contact with. Said player and I HAD in fact discussed this at the time, and they'd WANTED to have it happen, but the mods didn't know one way OR the other. They simply ASSUMED so they could try to pin it on me!) A long line of instances of them taking "offenses" that they didn't know for sure were offenses, that the player DIRECTLY affected HAD NOT come to them about, to paint a bigger picture of you being some kind of Problem Child who was daring to be naughty in THEIR classroom.

Now, I don't know if this was deliberate, but I can see why they did it. It makes you, as the player, feel like crap, puts you on the defensive, makes you question yourself. "Holy crap, were people really bothered by that time I went on a jokingly-serious rant about how awesome botany is when someone said they hated that topic in biology class?" (Hint: No they weren't. They thought NOTHING of it. But the mods saw it and filed it away for when they needed to make you feel like crap.) It puts the mods in a position of power and strengthened their authority. It forces you into a no-win scenario where you either deny the nonsensical accusations, and thus weaken your position and look less credible because it looks like you can't accept responsibility when you're wrong, OR accept the accusations and thereby agree with them that you're the naughty child and bad at following the rules. So it's a shitty, shitty manipulation technique. All of it coming from a place of entitlement and elitism.

I wish I could say I come from all this wiser, but it does feel like entitlement and elitism are the common denominator here. Part of the problem of the first RP was certain people needing to feel like they were superior and hating it when other people got in the way of that. Part of the problem of the second was stuck-up, self-important mods. Ultimately, it comes down to people who enjoy, just a little too much, to feel power and authority over people. To say that "it's THIS way, because I say it is" and have that listened to without question. Who enforce the rules not because it benefits the community, but because it makes them look good. Who view discussion, in and of itself, as disobedience, as an attack on their authority, an attack on them. I can't say I know for sure how to recognise the warning signs of a group like that BEFORE applying. But maybe big RP groups just aren't worth it, period.

and well actually, hm. i like manga a lot more because there usually tends to be a lot more plot development, etc. in it but uhh okay, I’ll just list some of my favorite manga that i know have become animes (though i may not have necessarily watched them all, lmfao asdfd):

deadman wonderland all the fucking way. holy shit. fave af. didn’t watch the anime, though, and don’t plan to since I can’t fare well with all that gore. b&w is a lot easier to deal with (though i can’t say i sit well with all of the graphic depictions of severed limbs, etc., but it’s a lot better when they’re not done in color). i love love love the characters, though not so much the lead (ganta); the side characters–i feel–are far more fascinating. i have no idea how far the anime goes but i really fucking loved the chapters that covered hummingbird/peacock/that old man (fuck i forgot his name)’s backstories ugasdhf and then i really (strangely) enjoyed the backstory of mockingbird and the final chapter was just a blessing. serious trigger warnings, though, if the title didn’t give much away already rip

orange is also really good and i only just recently found it that it became an anime. as in like, a few days ago. but i remember reading the manga and just asijfdkasdfids anticipating the updates and then the final chapter got me in dem feels :’) i love it. so much. it’s so refreshingly different from typical shoujo, too, and i love how they threw in the whole time travel thing in there which was like lowkey angsty the entire time but also it was like !! there is salvation!! (no that was not a spoiler but it is a source of stress and many tears). also, for anyone thinking of watching/reading this, gonna throw out (another) trigger warning out there.

soul eater is like lowkey my childhood bUT only lowkey though because i didn’t really start getting into it until like middle school LOL but then i got obsessed and watched the anime like 1239 times and then i was like oh hey manga is a thing! and i kinda read it, though it was confusing for me because the anime/manga splinter a bit so there isn’t exactly a clear, 100% cutoff from where the anime ends and the manga continues (i would explain more but then there would be spoilers). in any case, maka is literally queen as fuck and soul is such a slimy dork lmfAOOOASDF i love their dynamic for some reason so much??? but anyways the action anD THE WORLD HOL YSHIT I LOVE THE WORLD OF SOUL EATER like the dwma sounds like such a fucking cool place to study at, and the idea of some students being able to turn into weapons like ?!!?! sign me up

one piece, holy shit one piece leeemmmmeee tell you, yes, i may be basic af listing this one but ALSO ITS SO ASDIFJ I LOVE ODA’S LIKE WORLD BUILDING THING and also he’s a really funny guy. this was my obsession for a while but then i got too bored waiting for the next episode to come out (broh–listen. thursdays used to be my day because that’s when the next subbed episode would get released and i just asdfjiasdf). in any case, i just love it a lot and i’m still highkey married to zoro listen and perona’s devil fruit is literally like a++ idk why i like it so much but i just do and it’s so funny and wowoowow yes it’s long as fuck but it’s so fucking worth it and random fact: i actually started watching right in the middle of the thriller bark arc, and then after i got completely caught up i started jumping around earlier episodes until i’d watched (basically) all of them. granted, it was kinda confusing at first, but i’d do it again LOL

naruto because, like, dude, this shit’s a classic. i watched a lot of naruto when i was a kid, and then later on when i was super into anime i watched a lot of naruto shippuden (come to think of it, i don’t remember much of the original naruto. it was so long ago). i really liked the pain arc, it was so painfully feelsy and ughghasdfds and kakashi sensei and also i have not really caught up but i should because my fav character is gaara and i need to watch all the gaara episodes um but also highkey i have read the final two chapters and the first two chapters of boruto wow i love to spoil the stories for myself a lot a++ @ me lmfao (what am i saying help??)

gekkan shoujo to nozaki-kun becauSE LMFAO i relate to sakura bit too hard, and overall this shit is like, legit the funniest ever. there isn’t a lot of romance (or at least, not as much as one would expect from a shoujo) but the comedy factor makes up for it 1000000%. i love it. i don’t know what else to say but basically it’s kind of like a series of interrelated crackshots that revolve around a certain group of characters and it kind of fleshes out their relationships in the most hysterical way i lov it. i haven’t watched the anime yet, though, but i would love to sometime soon asjidf

durarara!! is love because in addition to being married to zoro, i am also in a committed (??!?!?) relationship with izaya because holy shit he’s such a little sly shit and i love him. i’ve watched about half the anime and read a bit of drrrr! and i love celty, simon is bae, and and and yeah i also don’t have much else to say about it. if you don’t know much about it, it’s basically about this (strange as fuck) city and these seemingly unrelated groups of people in it (ie the black Russian sushi dude who hands out flyers on the streets, high school students, an information broker, a headless motorcyclist) and how certain incidents connect them

mekakucity actors though it’s probably a bit hard to understand for people who didn’t know the vocaloid series it stemmed off from. but in any case, it’s kind of similar to durarara in which it’s basically how a group of seemingly unrelated people are connected to each other, but it’s more central in that rather than certain events, it’s just one, major danger and the fact that they all have a certain power to them. trigger warning on this one, though. it’s sad, agh, though the anime has a happier ending than the official ending for the vocaloid series (and probably the manga–i haven’t read it, so i don’t know). if you ever need someone to explain things to you, i got ya.

black rock shooter (the anime) is pretty good and it’s kind of different in that it does have a manga (several versions, in fact) but the anime has its very own storyline (and interpretation of the characters and their various relationships). there are even several oc’s introduced that are major players in the plot, and i found that really interesting (though i preferred one of the manga versions more, which is listed below). there’s actually no like… realistic depiction of blood (it’s like… blue) and i appreciate that, though some parts can come off as a bit… deranged. either way, i really enjoy these types of storylines haisf and brs is badass, i’ll tell you that.
