Graves x fem!reader pt. 2/2

Warnings: maybe ooc graves, harassment, healthy communication, graves is sweet, mature content but no secs

Going abruptly from living from shadow to shadow by the skin of their teeth to an upscale event that recognized their branch of military was something no one on the task force was prepared for. Being a private company, it wasn’t as though there was any media or presidents to stick badges on their chest, but Price was told it was an effort to familiarize with other special ops units they could be seeing in the field.

Weeks before the scheduled banquet, half the team was already complaining. Mornings in the common area of their current safehouse were more bicker-ey than usual.

The sun cast beams of light into the living room and across the island counter, where Ghost stood preparing the coffee machine.

“This is ridiculous. They want us to reveal ourselves to whoever these people are voluntarily?”

“They’re like us, Ghost. It’s an event for private companies.”

“You have to admit it’s a perfect plan for an ambush, Gaz.” Spider scored the peel of an orange with a short knife, pushing at the edges.

“Why’s it gotta be like that?” Soap interjected. “Can we not pretend to be normal members of society for one night?”

“You sound like my friends from high school.” Spider threw away the peel, starting on the slices that she’d separated.

“It’s seven in the mornin’ and you’re arguing?” Graves emerged from the hall, eyes bleary with sleep. Spider’s breath nearly hitched at the sight of his uneven bed head, and she ducked her head to focus on her fruit.

“Well, what do you think? Trap or no trap?” Soap questioned.

“No trap. Price ain’t stupid.”

Seemingly beckoned by his name, the captain eased the front door open to return inside. Spider spotted him toss out the end of his cigar.

“Did you—go outside to smoke? Do you finally care about our lungs?” She placed a hand to her chest, her tone flared with drama.

“Needed a break from you lot.” He grumbled, taking a mug offered by Ghost with a nod.

“Where’s Ale?” Spider wondered aloud.

“Shower. That damn music was driving me crazy; s’why I came down here.”

“Ella Fitzgerald is a master of sound!”

Alejandro’s exclamation sounded from down the hall.

“I guess he’s done.” Gaz murmured.

“You don’t like Ella Fitzgerald?” Spider looked at Graves as if he’d socked Price in the jaw. “Do you have brain damage?”

“It would be fine if it wasn’t so loud!”

“Are you a librarian by night or something?” Ghost teased.

“That’s messed up. If you have a secret identity you need to tell me.” Spider finished off her orange, walking over to the hall, but was thrown off by Graves using the hand the others couldn’t see to take her hand for less than a moment before letting it slip past. The others continuing to bicker, she glanced back to see him already watching her, letting the moment linger before returning his eyes to the group with a smile playing in his eyes.

Spider blinked, scolding her rapid heartbeat. She had things to do.

The afternoon’s busy work was mostly inefficient as the team mainly gossiped about the night ahead of them. Everyone was on edge, or planning to drink themselves asleep, or planning to not say a word.

“How are a bunch of special ops agents supposed to small talk? It’s going to be awkward.” Gaz leaned back in his computer chair, looking over at Spider desperately.

“Just create a new identity; that’s what I do at parties.” Spider murmured while still writing something down.

“You’re a piece a’ work, webs.” Graves seemed to be almost talking to himself, grumbling into the folder he held in front of him.

“How has the world not taken the southern out of you yet?” Spider pointed to Graves with her pen. Graves remained stoic, but his eyes shined with amusement.

“That would take a miracle, honey.”

“Alright..” Spider tossed a discarded crumpled file at his head, which he promptly caught, grinning.

Price took it upon himself to go into the nearest town to gather nicer clothes than the ones they’d been recycling for the past months. Spider insisted on going with him, lecturing the man in the car that you most certainly could not tell how a dress fits just by looking at it.

They split up in the mall, Price giving her half of the cash he brought and wandering off to gather tuxes for the boys. Spider found a suitable store, and then a few different dresses. When the first one was zipped, a thought of sending a picture of the dress to Graves floated through her mind. Looking at the dress again; a deep blue high neck with the cutoff just at the knee and a healthy showing of back, she decided to get some photos of each before sending anything.

The next dress was more conforming, a comfortable black fabric that ended at her mid-thigh and thin straps. Then a red flowing piece with lace sleeves running the length of her arms and two shallow slits on either thigh. She photographed them all, hovering over the send button to graves after typing the caption “can’t decide!”

Exhaling quickly, she sent it, quickly tossing her phone on the pile of her clothes and silently panicking. What if his phone was facing up and someone saw? What if they told Price? Shit, shit-

Her phone pinged softly. Spider rushed to see his name light up her phone.

“I’m not a fashion expert, but the blue is nice. Classy.”

Nice. Nice, nice, nice..was that good? Spider’s thumbs hovered over the keyboard before typing.

“I’ll take what i can get

thanks cowboy”

She nearly deleted the ‘cowboy’, but couldn’t resist.

A text from Price telling her to hurry up prompted her to return the black and red dresses to their homes and buy the blue, along with short heels and a few makeup products, then walk back out to the car feeling lighter than air.

Spider made sure to beeline for the bathroom as soon as she returned, nervous for Graves’ reaction to her following his advice. She showered, taking the opportunity to shave her legs and use a scented body wash. It had been a while since she’d showered outside of necessity.

She blowdried and combed her hair, throwing it into a low ponytail to get the dress on with no hair in her eyes. The dress felt different than it did in the dressing room, as expected, but still looked professionally sexy in her mind. After a bout of eye and lip makeup, she put her hair up in a more deliberate updo, pulling a few strands to frame her face. She pulled on the heels, the height low enough to not put her in pain and high enough to add an inch or two of personal confidence. Breathing deeply, she dared to ease the bathroom door open. No one in the hall. She nearly ran to the bedroom she’d slept in to retrieve her clutch, grateful to carry around a semi-classy wallet casually.

She finally made her way out to the living room, a whistle catching her attention. Soap stood adjusting his bow tie, grinning at her blank stare.

“Shut up, Johnny.”

“Dinnae say anything!”

“Mhm.” A smile made its way onto her lips, easing the anxiety rattling around in her ribcage. Ghost and Gaz sat on the couch talking, Gaz in a black dress shirt and grey tie and ghost in a wine-red dress shirt with a dark blazer. The others trickled in slowly, Alejandro performing a short spin that prompted much hollering and whistling.

Finally, Graves emerged from the hall, adorning a crisp white dress shirt, black blazer, and-

“Your tie is blue.” Spider blurted. Not interrupting anyone’s conversation, but catching Graves’ attention.

“Well thank the man upstairs. Didn’t know if you’d go through with it.” He smiled easily, making his way over to her.

“Well, you have good taste.” Spider conceded.

A comfortable pause lingered between them before Graves spoke.

“You look beautiful.”

Spider pushed down the fluttering in her abdomen.

“Thank you. You look very nice, with your suit and..” Spider trailed off when she realized what she was about to say, Graves tilting his head.

“And what, darling?”

Jesus. “And—when you..smile. You-you look nice when you smile.” She managed. His poise seemed to falter a bit, as he fixed his cuff links and shifted his weight.

“Well—thank you.” He murmured. Spider smiled.

“Don’t mention it.”

Please mention it.

“Alright, you lot, time to go!” Price clapped his hands together, everyone filing out and into the car.

The city rolled past, Spider gazing out the window at the skyscrapers and neon signs. The tinted windows hid the true brightness of it all; proven when they stepped out and the dazzling signs all around them became apparent. The venue was on the fourth floor of the building, Price leading everyone to the elevator. It turned out to be much too small to fit all of them at once, and Spider spoke without thinking.

“We can get the one after this.”

Graves, stood next to her, looked over in surprise but didn’t object.

“Meet you there.” Price nodded. As the doors closed, Spider heard Gaz whispering to Soap,

“Are they matching?”

A hush fell over the two soldiers.

“Feels weird. Being out in the open again.” Spider confessed. Graves nodded, sighing in thought.

“You play civilian well enough, though.” He offered.

“Thanks—I think.” Spider returned.

“Listen, I think we should- talk about what happened. At least talk about it.” Graves spoke ever so softly, glancing around him, but Spider’s eyes still widened.

“Not here. Anywhere but here..” She murmured. The doors opened, Spider pulling Graves in unceremoniously. When the doors closed, she spoke again.

“I meant what I said in the med wing. And I like you.”

Graves rocked on his heels. “Straight to the point.”

“I pride myself on it.”

Another silence.

“This won’t work.”

Graves looked over, blinking. “What are you talkin’ about?”

“Our jobs, Graves. It doesn’t work.”

“Who said we gotta parade it around? For all they know, we’re close friends.”

It was true in a way—everyone knew Spider and Graves had become a sort of dynamic since that close call at the warehouse. It was chalked up within the team to be a scare that brought the two together, and if anyone had suspicions of their attraction, they didn’t voice them.

“The rest of the team isn’t what’s dangerous. It’s everyone we’ve ever crossed, and everyone we’ll ever piss off. And I try to hide it, I really fucking do, Graves..” Spider gestured to herself stiffly, her voice wavering. “But they’ll know. They’ll know and- and they’ll use it.”

Graves let a deep breath go through his nose, searching her eyes with his for a moment. He stepped forward, hand just extending to rest by her jaw, when the doors opened, and Spider quickly maneuvered his hand to his side to link his arm with hers and step forward.

“Nice save.” Graves murmured.

The banquet was all gold and high ceilings, rows of food and alcohol running the edges of the room while tables dotted the centre. Swarms of people stood in groups, nursing their drinks and seeming to be unable to relax their shoulders. They found the rest of the team at a table, still keeping to themselves.

“Are the other kids too scary?” Spider chided.

“Very funny.” Ghost muttered.

“Well, personally, I’d love to meet some fresh faces. I’ll be at the bar.” Spider gently removed her arm from Graves’, looking over her shoulder to see him lean forward on the back of Soap’s chair. He’d pushed up his sleeves so his forearms and watch were on display—she shook herself out of the observation.

“Could I get a Negroni, please?” Spider situated herself into a barstool, swiveling back and forth absentmindedly as she studied the people around her. She was surprised to see quite a few attempts of advancements between soldiers—she assumed no one had the nerve. It was just flirting, she conceded.

“One Negroni.” The bartender slid the amber drink over the counter. “Wanna start a tab?”

“Yes, pl-"

“Put it on mine.”

A voice over her shoulder nearly had her flinch—she turned to see a tux-clad man, handsome, but somehow Spider could tell he was arrogant. He had an air to him that said he assumed the best outcome for him would happen naturally.

“How you doin’?” He greeted her, but didn’t meet her eyes, pulling a carton of cigarettes his blazer pocket.

“I’m alright.” Spider sipped her drink as he lit one and took a drag, shifting her weight uncomfortably.

“You with anyone tonight?” He rested on an elbow, leaning into her space.

“Task force 141.” Spider replied shortly.

“Right.. any one of them gotten a piece a’ you?”

Spider didn’t reply.

He grinned with the teeth of a chainsmoker, scoffing.

“What, you never been hit on before? Give me a shot, honey.”

“Are you serious?” Spider’s slight raise in volume made the man finally back up, raising his cigarette to his lips again. “Either find a better pickup artist to model after or never talk to a woman again, alright?”

Suddenly, he grabbed her forearm, yanking it forward to blow the tobacco smoke into her eyes.

“Get off!” She twisted out of his grip, coughing.

“There a problem here, buddy?”

Spider glanced up after sliding out of her stool, seeing Graves appear from the crowd. He stepped forward to size up the man, who got out of his own stool to face him. He lifted the cigarette again, only for Graves to snatch and toss it.

“Yeah, that’s enough of that. I hope you’re listening cause’ I don’t repeat myself. You ever talk to her, or anyone for that matter, like that again, I’m gonna show you the difference—between military..and me.”

Despite Spider’s attraction to Graves’ assertiveness in the moment, the embarrassment won, driving her to speed walk to the bathroom. She felt his footsteps follow her, and he closer the door behind them. Spider faced away, her face in her hands.

“Did he hurt you? Let me-"

“No—no, I’m not hurt, Graves.” Spider’s cheeks burned with shame. She was not helpless. She was not helpless.

“Come on, now, what’s goin’ on?” Graves’ hands were partially extended out to her, and Spider vaguely noticed he’d loosened his tie.

“I just,” Spider sighed deeply, resting her hip against one of the sinks. Graves mirrored her, close but not touching.

“That kind of thing happened to me before I was in the military, and I thought—I don’t know..” Spider looked away, frustrated. “I thought it would be different because I’m different. I’m stronger, smarter.”

Graves nodded, looking to her with those bedroom eyes that nearly erased her rant from her mind.

“And then the fact you helped me, I was so angry at myself for not being able to just handle it; I’m a grown woman.”

Graves moved to stand in front of her, cautiously taking her hand and running a thumb along it when Spider let him.

“I knew you could handle it. You always handle it.” He murmured. “I did what I did out of instinct. I can’t let people like that get away with that shit, but more than than I can’t just watch when it happens to you.”

Spider shook ever head ever so slightly. “How are you this way with me and then when you’re working you just—you just seem so angry?”

Graves inhaled and blinked as if he’d been wounded. “I uh.. I’m not sure. Maybe you poisoned me.” He said it with faux seriousness, raising his eyebrows and pressing his lips into a line.

Spider hummed. “Figured you’d find out somehow.”

A smile pulled at Graves’ features. “I’m glad you bought the blue.” He took the side of her waist in one hand, pulling her into him, while the other traveled up her spine to rest near her neck. The action send pinpricks of electricity all over, and she didn’t care that it was childish.

Suddenly, Spider’s brow furrowed. “Hey, how did Price know to get you the blue?”

Graves looked away for a moment. “When you sent me those photos I uh, I asked him to.”

Spider grinned.

“Shut up.” He grumbled.

“Shut me up yourself.” Spider looped her arms over his shoulders, running her nails through the hair at the back of his head. His eyes fluttered closed when she scratched at his scalp before regaining himself.

“Jesus, baby..” he breathed.

“Kiss me. Please.” Spider returned his words with the same whisper.

“Happy to.”

He leaned down, moving the hand on her waist to hold her jaw and run the pad of his thumb over her cheek. Spider leaned eagerly into him, a soft noise escaping her throat involuntarily.

“I’ve wanted,” she spoke between kisses. “To do this—a long time before the med wing..”

Graves pressed one last long kiss to her lips before pausing. “That right?”

His voice was a low gravel, warming Spider’s body in places she wouldn’t admit.

��I’d watch you work. Drove me crazy.” Spider admitted, earning a grin.

“How cruel of me. And I consider myself polite..” his hands wandered, palming her chest gingerly, exploring the soft flesh of her thighs, hiking the blue fabric higher. Spider took the action as a sign to move her hands down further. She felt his toned stomach through the soft dress shirt, pulling him in to kiss him while she ran her hands up his sides. He sighed into her mouth, and when her nails returned to his scalp with more fire than before, a low groan practically reverberated down her throat. Graves pressed her into the sink gently, deepening the kiss with the hunger shared only between glances before tonight.

Spider broke away to take in his eyes, pupils blown wide, along with his mussed, pale grey hair.

“You’re so gorgeous..”

Graves huffed a laugh. “What?”

“You heard me.” She reached further still, daring to brush her hand along the inside of his thigh. “You make me crazy.”

“Fuck, honey..” he breathed erratically, his hips jerking forward at the sensation. “You tryna’ kill me?”

“I’m a medic, Graves.” Spider breathed. “I make you feel better.”

I have thoughts about Leander and need to share them.

First of all I think it's hilarious that we are all speculating about him. The devs knew what they were doing making his intro so cryptic, and I fell for it too so get ready.

We got that sweet combo of light eyes, dark circles and massive tit- a kind disposition with some twisted secret that lead us all down the possible yandere route. And while we see some suspiciously controlling/jealous/possessive streaks with him not letting anybody else treat the mc to drinks, forcing the mc to touch him when they hold back and saying negative things of the other LIs in his alone time, there is a post here already analysing how this might not be the case. I agree with them on the whole, he values freedom too much to go too far on that front.

So I'm going to include my humble theory to the mix. I think with Leander they can go for a really tragic story of a boy who grew up in the Lowtown, who saw all the horrors that lurk in the dark. He founded the Bloodhounds to help the people since the Senobium do nothing for those less fortunate. He wants to save everybody, but (according to Ais) he is only human after all. He is the only LI that does not have a monster background in his intro, it's just his shadow. However, we know that he is very powerful and has incredible abilities to yield magic without any incantation (this is giving strong FMA vibes). So, how does he do it? How could a regular mage encounter such power and why is he not with the erudite in the Senobium? I think, that he has to have made a pact or some sort of deal to achieve all this power at an incredibly high cost. If something feels too good to be true, it probably is... He is kind, he wants to help his people, and he has the power to do so. All free of charge, of course. There is no way he could have gotten all that power without giving something vital of himself away (again in true FMA fashion). We will have to find out what that is. We already know about his massive scar, how he likes to work hard, play harder and does not like to sleep. He is always drinking in his free time and having plenty of "escapades". It feels like he is trying to distract himself or forget about something that he cannot change and is inevitable. Ais says that Leander's resolve will be tested in this plane and the next, and I wonder if that could mean that he is reaching a turning point in which he has to decide between himself or the people. Or if he is too far gone and could forget his initial intentions.

Then again this could all be wrong :). I have only played with the Unnamed Origin, and as an oracle, the mc does not feel anything amiss when meeting Leander, while the oracle can feel a lot of stuff when meeting Vere, Ais or even Kuras (and don't get me started on that "nagging feeling" and "sense of familiarity" with kuras omg what if him or his power have something to do with the curse and that is why he is so guilty bdjnfioefjn). So he could simply be a Guy ™ that happens to be very powerful.

Then there is also how Vere talks about him. Vere straight up insults him and calls him slimy. I feel like we can trust Vere's sense of smell and he can really see through others’ intentions so I wonder if that is really how Leander truly is, although Vere doesn't really have anything nice to say about anybody (other that how big Ais is snfinrf). Could I just be another victim of Leander's charm and fail to see that he is a little evil gremlin ready to show how you don't need to be born a monster to be truly villainous? Possibly, but I don't mind I would just like to hold them him.

I feel like all the LIs do have a good heart or at least no real ill intent against the mc (looking at you Vere), but Leander is the only one that seems to openly claim that he is doing this out of the goodness of his heart. And that is terribly suspicious. Anyway, I still need to play with the other origins and see what else I can find. I would love to hear your opinions on this!!!

Lyta Alexander, it's good to see you again! Even on the sad occasion of her trying to find out more about Kosh's death.

Seeing Sheridan just out for a walk and end up staring nose to nose with a Vorlon (?) ship was an effective way to set tone and scale. This is John Sheridan. He's measuring himself against gods.

Swedish meatballs exist in every race…to the Narnuan they're breen. Amazing.

G'Kar thinks the best use for their newly recovered and repaired warships is to protect Babylon 5, because it's the linchpin. What a terrifying linchpin to have! A highly puncturable, thin little steel shell, that has to spin just right, and also not get any holes in it.

Is…Stephen Franklin eating sunflower seeds to keep from doing cocaine?? lmao. unsure where he's meeting up with Garibaldi.

not-Kosh is a diiiiiick. dude. Vorlons have telepathy, and are a higher order species. How on earth is choking the most efficient way of getting the information.

This Vorlon has a much more distinguishable neck than Kosh did. And the voice is different. but the neck thing is kinda unsettling…my mental imagine of an encounter suit is less segmented. I wonder if not-Kosh was designed to be unsettling. Not-Kosh also moves differently, seems more like he's walking than Kosh's hovering glide. Kosh's encounter suit seemed like it was puppeted by an amorphous form. not-Kosh looks like a guy in a suit.

I hadn't remembered Lyta being Kosh's aid, but man is she in an unenviable position right now.

Stephen Franklin is finding himself by watching live performances. So I should hope for us all.

LOVE the war council scene and them all outvoting Sheridan. for real giggled about it.

Caillyn and the newly christened Steve are actually quite cute and I hope she doesn't die ingloriously or get disappeared by black ops or something.

Sheridan's plan definitely isn't foolproof, but it is interesting! Also regarding how Delenn mentioned Lyta's psi rating of 5. Which yes. PsiCorps rated her a 5 and trained her. But they also limited her - and all their telepaths. She's been working with Vorlons for the last few years. And didn't she connect with the Psi underground? They've been innovating. She's got to be a Psi 7 at the least.

Garibaldi lecturing G'Kar - who wanted the ship's captain to go on Sheridan's mission - on the captain choosing not to go. And the whole weird bit about them not knowing how to use their resources wisely….the ones they barely have because they're being genocided actively right now and have lost most of everything they have? It falls very flat for me. No one has lost as much or been put through as much as the Narnuan people.

omg. Steve. Steve. Don't lecture your lady in bed, the first time you've ever been in bed together?? On the day you met?? So not smooth my guy.

Lyta is weak to the Shadows rather than the other way around until she sees in Sheridan's mind that the Shadows killed Kosh. And that gave her an upgrade that lets her cry blood when she does really high powered offensive telepathy.

Four shadows ships have arrived! Ten minutes before they can bring the jump engines back on.

This is our first real look at Minbari telepathy! And it's not as good as Lyta Alexander's! Also, c'mon, the White Star got one all by themselves but the Minbari ship with three times the telepaths and presumably also weapons didn't get even a single one?? At least the Narn got to shine, because merely holding the Shadows still doesn't get any more than an "adequate" from me. The B5 crew is gettin it.

Whoops, bye Cailyn. Stephen Franklin's curse with women strikes again. Also, this answers my question of where he's been this whole time. Babylon 5. He's just been wandering around b5, lmao. Abandoned his life and started wandering. Around the same space station. hah. And his new sweetie has maybe 6-7 months to live. Man, he really doesn't get more than the slightest sparks of happiness, huh.

Oh-ho, one of my theories! Lyta tells not-Kosh that someone (Sheridan) might have a piece of Kosh. *gives self a star*

darklina scenes are very well done...the desire and the way the darkling is describing his past and his way of thinking

Okay so a kinda OP 1089 live post as I watch. This is from the perspective of a manga reader so anime only's if you come across this I might hint or talk about something that couod ruin the experience, so beware!

-First of all omfg that opening. So amazing. I remember seeing a tweet from one of the animation staff lamenting that they felt their work was gonna be invalidated. If anything, I hope they see the love people pour into it on a weekly basis and how we enjoy the journey alongside them. Like i think the remakes gonna be amazing for new viewers but the weekly release really gives us the leisure of adventure. It lets us bask instead of throwing us into a plot heavy rush.

-And nothing proves that better than the extended look at the strawhats as they discuss luffys dreams. Their expressions and thoughts. Just those extra seconds of living with the characters was so fun. Also it makes me so curious about Luffys dream once again. Ok so like he has to be the king of the pirates to achieve it right? So the free-est person on the sea? What could be beyond that? Free-est person in the universe? Are we getting space hopping Luffy?

-And then the gorosei talking about it being Sabos destiny that he is there. Hmmm. Ive been thinking about destiny recently and its really interesting how that comment lines up with my thoughts.

-and lulusia! The king is literally Vlad the impaler. And the mother flame impales the land. Makes me wonder if Mihawks from there. Also, what a horrific sequence.

-can't forget to mention that Sabo's transponder has a scar! Idk if this is a popular theory or idea but seeing him in colour really makes me want him to awaken blues flames, something that burns hotter thans ace.

-omg the eyecatchers(is that what they're called?the things in the middle of the episode. Where they cut for ads. Its been so long since ive watched anime properly, im sorry 😭) Are so adorable!

-the banter between zoro and Sanji! The crew working the ship! Love!

-but like also this reminds me why I love Sanji and Zoro as the wings. Sanji is the tactics and Zoro is the reason. Both things luffy lacks. And even extending to the rest of the east blue crew, Nami appeals to a heart and will, remember the Cracker fight. And her whole existence in supporting her village was about her strength of will. And Ussop represents both caution and bravery. Just as much a willingness to stick back and observe as with Sugar as dive in like GOD Ussop. They're facets that Luffy's never had.

-ahh my son Chopper is so cute! And robin 😍. And Luffys red nose and cheeks! Sorry for being a canadian but ah I miss winter! Right now where I live this time of year should be blizzards and flurries but the streets barely have snow on them and I yearn! I yearn! At least my beloved Straw Hats can experience it for me!

-afro power makes a return! Also so interesting that Bonney looks like she emerges from the sun. Chopperemon will save all! And Luffy is so adorable sitting on Sunny's head🥰

-Did i cry at the ending? Uhh yeah. I'm a human being. But like for reals, from calling back to the first ending to the flashbacks to the recruiting!!!

Into the desert we go! I was super excited to meet Pelleas, but first, we have to pick up some other puppies.

It's Meg! I actually really like her design. She's an overweight character who is really cute. As far as I remember, her weight is never used as a punch line. Plus her personality isn't just about being clumsy or eating a lot of food, so yay! I know she can be a good unit, so I was hoping that I would roll a good Meg.

I'm sad we never actually get to see this conversation play out in PoR. According to this conversation, Sothe held prejudice against the laguz until meeting Ike. As we all know, Ike does not tolerate anti-laguz sentiment within his army.

That does make me wonder, though. Micaiah, if you knew Sothe held such strong prejudice against the laguz, why didn't you try to educate him? Sothe would have listened to you.

It's the beautiful man and the two puppers! I really love Nailah and Rafiel. The strong wife / fragile husband dynamic never gets old for me. I could take or leave Volug, though. He doesn't seem to add much to the story imo.

Nailah! I just love her design. She looks so cool! And with the eye patch, I think the implication is that that's the eye she uses to turn people to stone? So she has to cover it in order to prevent turning people to stone on accident?

What a completely random and OP power they gave her for seemingly no reason. I'm not complaining, mind you, just bemused.

This line is so funny. I know it was added in the English version, but I actually love its inclusion. I wonder if she genuinely thinks that Sothe has a bit of a crush on Ike. No one would blame him if he did! But either way, what an interesting bit of dialogue. I like to think this is the part of the story where Micaiah starts questioning whether her feelings for Sothe are as pure and platonic as she initially believed.

Micaiah, this is no time to get all preachy. You're literally fighting in a revolution. You need funds for your army. I do honestly love Micaiah but she does annoy me from time to time.

Omg, I love Nailah's sense of humor.

Yay! I barely managed to survive this map, but it's okay, because I have reunited with Jill! Oh, and Tauroneo and Zihark are here, too. I really wish I had managed to get Jill to level 20. I feel like those transfer bonuses would have made this and subsequent chapters a whole lot easier.

Izuka is also back, of course. I do love how blatantly evil he is, and how much everyone else seems to despise him (excluding Prince Pelleas, of course). Even though he's terrible, I do appreciate the humor he brings to part 1 of Radiant Dawn.

And there he is! The supreme limp noodle sadboy! I love how his theme song is called "Sorrowful Prince Pelleas", and how it sounds so damn depressing. He is just so pitiful. I cannot help but adore him.

And behind every wimpy sadboy is a helicopter mom! It's Almedha! Such an interesting character. So overbearing, so smothering... Not that Pelleas minds at this point. He's been without a mother's love for so long that he's starved for validation.

And that's it for now! The revolution is underway, and it's time to add our final (and least helpful) member to the Dawn Brigrade.

17 - Blizzarmon - Blow the Snow, Call the Glaciers! -Arbormon napping at the bottom of the sea. I wonder if his quirk is a reference to some Japanese thing or if the writers just thought this callous monster villain being like "brush your teeth kids!" would be funny. -Everybody's still gliding along on the raft and nearly get themselves… iced hehehehe. -During the looking-for-Toucanmon montage there's a Dukemon casually thrown in there. That's so funny. "omg Dukemon!! One of the Holy Knights!" "Oh no that's my cousin I just stock the shelves in this armoury." -All you need is the power of VIDEO GAMES!! I love Tomoki he's my fave character I think. Him trying to trade his hat and shoes for the Digivices was cute. It's sad when he cries (god that sounds so stupid lol) when Nanomon's fiddling with the Digivice. I mean, that feeling of being a small kid totally out of your depth and trying SO HARD to do something right or useful or stop something bad but it's just not working out no matter what. Poor kid. -CURRY EATING CONTEST!! I love how they actually brought this back around later in the episode. Honestly this entire ep felt really cohesive and well-written. Every time I see an anime curry I want to eat curry though haha. -Blizzarmon is really cool, this is the first time I've seen it (outside of the OP) -Love Koji and Takuya beating Petaldramon with literal sticks and pipes lol. It was also good that they HELPED Tomoki in the fight after getting their Digivices again, but didn't overshadow him or take away his victory. -Good episode. I like it.

18 - Choo-Choo! The Fierce Trailmon Race -Digimon Frontier suddenly becomes Wacky Races lol. Nice seeing all the Trailmon again. -Izumi you literally just ate 30 servings of curry the day before WHY ARE YOU HUNGRY NOW haha. -OMG EBIBURGAMON AAAAAAAAAA My third favourite species after Mummymon and Tokomon. LITTLE BURGER MONSTERS. I literally just finished my first sketches of my Burgamon OCs last night too. Burgers burgers burgas. oh my goshness -This was a super goofy episode (in a good way). Not much to say since the bulk of the events were just race shenanigans and danger, but it was pretty entertaining. -WAIT OMG THE PRIZE IS GOING TO THE HAMBURGER VILLAGE OMG OMG OMG MORE BURGAMON YES YES YES!!

19 - Save the Burgamon! Tomoki's Pure Heart -THE LITTLE BURGER VILLAGE. A shame it's under siege from the get-go. It would've been nice to see all the little burgers being happy… -Chamelemon is here! Another Digimon I've never see outside of the official artwork. -Bruh this episode is just… so good, so funny. The mother Burgamon fainting all the time, the little baby Torikaraballmon. Everybody taking HAMBURGERS so seriously. Peak Digimon tbh. Just a silly fun time. -Okay so Takaya's burgers sound good to me?? What's the issue??? Especially the second one. Kimchi, curry and chorizo? Sounds tasty AF. sounds of copious notes being taken Koji however should never be left alone in a kitchen. -Honestly I can't think of anything to else say I just really liked this episode. It was fun and silly. AND BURGAMON WAS THERE.

20 - The Mysterious Warrior Lurking the Darkness - Duskmon! -Arbormon: I will do whatever I can to be useful to Cherubimon. spends at least several days tormenting a tiny village because he wants burgers -Mercuremon makes the worst mistake a villain can make and LOUDLY MONOLOGUES HIS PLAN OHOHOHOHOHO! …and Duskmon hears, ooo. -Cherubimon's first real appearance. And he can smell Mercuremon's BS a mile away haha. -Trailmon can just decide not to follow tracks. Makes sense since they're autonomous. It probably sounds horrifying to Japanese viewers by my English arse is like "yeah makes sense the train would just. not go where it's supposed to" -Aww, the whole scene with Pipismon and Bokomon being encouraged to be the one to fill in the book's blank pages was nice! -Aaand Arbormon shows up again. We get our first mass simultaneous beast Spirit evolution, but even that can't quite cut it against Petaldramon at first. In the end the kids overcome him and give him the option of surrndering only for Duskmon to show up and destroy him. It was only a matter of time before this happened haha. -Duskmon has a really cool design Just all the eyes all over, looks nice and freaky. -I'm getting close to the halfway point! I'm really interested to see where it's gonna go from here given there's still quite a bit remaining.

21 - The Five Warriors Annihilated!? The Terrifying Power of Darkness! -Well now that's a title. -Unsurprisingly, Duskmon wipes the floor with the kids, so they flee. -Some nice moments and scenes here, especially the one between Izumi and Junpei. -Takuya comes up with an AMAZING PLAN that will DEFINITELY NOT WORK. And Koji is not having it. I really like their relationship. -Duskmon seems to recognise Koji somehow. I actually figured a while ago Duskmon is probably related to Koji somehow, maybe like a lost older brother or something. Y'know. Light and Darkness and all that. Plus Koji has that "secret" or whatever. -THAT ENDING THO. The Darkness Terminal bit and Takuya solemnly gets on the train. That was actually a pretty haunting moment. Really felt like a metaphorical death. I know Digimon gets dark sometimes for a ids show but no way they'd literally kill off a 10 year old like that lol. There was some nice atmosphere and animation this episode.

Tf eu #5 rambles under the cut

Obviously, the most important thing is that MY WIFE IS HEEEERE YEAAAAAH. Love how they lettered her name here omg

She's wonderful!!!! Her bait and switch intro was funny (but please don't actually corner The Girl One into a love interest) and her stunt saving Carly was so cool, I'm glad we're establishing her right. I wish she didn't look so much Like That, but at least DWJ is as willing to deform her for action as anyone else. Her buccal fat removal look makes her look like a skull, which would be cool if it were on puporse, but it's not so. I like the shade they picked for her, is more of a lilac but it looks pink with the rest of the color palette and meshes well with the setting.

This series is really good at the appel to the inner child thing, because I'm like genuinely excited to see the Autobots have the advantage for once!! But ofc, they can't really because the arc ends next issue and they're not gonna have a decisive win until that.

Tho, Optimus and Cliffjumper are carrying the Autobots in regards to being the heroes we root for. I mean, Arcee and Jazz are very cool and that has their appeal, but I do wish once things have settled and they can interact in more situations that aren't just life and death, because so far I feel like we only get a good grasp of who Optimus and Cliffjumper are as individuals, their personalities. I want to see what makes each Autobot unique.

Speaking of, still absolutely eating the Carly and CJ dynamic. She is great and when she said that what does if matter if she's at risk when her family is dead and Spike is in a coma, that reallly got to me. It's unwise, but Cliffjumper relating to her and bringing her to give her a sense of closure it's really good. I think that this kind of bringing the kid character into danger would be because Carly sneaked her way, or because Cliffjumper would disregard orders for the hell of it. But like this feeeling of "I know how she feels and I would want come in her place too" works really well.

Also, I care about Sparky now, lol. Not that at hated him before. I'm not a fan of the first page, as cool at it look, because comparing OP to the US military like the later are the good guy is mmmm... but I'm loving his rapport with Optimus. And also there's how he looks when he's told the generator will give them a decade of power. It's not like "amazing tech woaaah!" It's softer like... this isn't an affluent town, these are people who are used to struggle and they just lost their power source. Ten years of power like that is a godsend that he can hardly believe that will do the whole town a lot of good and he cares about that. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but you know.

And ooooh dear, I was already unwell over Optimus getting his Megatron's canon arm grafted, but I understimated what seein him actually shoot the canon would do to me. I need... several moments.... the fight scenes are pretty gone but this one was particulary brutal. Optimus is really fearsome. And given how he has been so carefully characterized as this bleeding heart figure, seeing him decimating his enemies so efficient is quite something. And by something I mean gap moe. We love to see it.

RIP Reflector, your camera jokes will be missed, but that sequence was amazing lmao

Love seeing Optimus hit Starscream where it hurts. But OP saying that last time Starscream was cowering from Megatron's canon brings a lot of questions about the sequence of events in the Ark (which we'll get to see in teh special it seems). And I've been wondering if Starscream had something to do with Megatron falling or dissapearing or whatever, this does make it seem more like it and well, if that's the case I wonder how the rest of the Cons will react.

Man, the Autobots really shined this time and I already forgot what I was thinking about the Decepticons!! But hey!!! Thundercracker is here!!!!!!!! My guy!!! Given that his characterization as per toy bio is the guy that's not so sure about the cause, I wonder how he'll take it when he find out what really happened to Skywarp.

Also, are the Constructicons newly made??

Anyway, good stuff.

HEY, OK, SO. Anonymous who asked about who I thought Pete was pointing his gun at in the Ep 7 bathroom scene - I think THIS EP IS THE PAYOFF for that scene.

We see in the Ep 7 scene that Pete has zero problem pointing his gun in the face of either his bestie or the Minor Family Heir - despite whatever interfamily political bullshit that might stir up - when his loyalty to Kinn and the Major Family seems to require it. We see that again here. Because we’ve already seen him do it once, it’s not at all unexpected this time, the way Pete draws down on Porsche when he catches him trying to escape with Vegas, nor the way he immediately moves to stick his gun in Vegas’s face when Vegas makes a move at him, as if to say, “You too, motherfucker. Don’t think I won’t give you a piece of this, merit-making or no. One more move and I’ll see you in the next life. And while we’re on the subject, why are you underestimating me in action? It’s like you’ve never had me ride shotgun for you on a op before.” He also apparently has no problem throwing down with Porsche, which, thank god someone was paying attention in Bodyguard class, because we haven’t seen Chan for several eps, now that I think about it, and it’s probably because he’s recovering from a heart attack over how slack all these dumbasses have been, letting Kinn and Porsche wander around fucking all over town completely unprotected. (Ha. Double meaning intended.)

ANYWAY, I have to pause here just a minute to scream into a pillow again, because OMG, PETE, ILU, my hyper-competent violence-prone feral sunshine button. You are the best of the Bodyguard Farm, and don’t ever let anyone tell you different.

OK, now that I got that out of my system, at least temporarily, what I find SUPER-INTERESTING about this pattern of Pete’s and the way it shows his loyalty to Kinn and the Major Family is that I think we start seeing the first cracks in it a little later in the episode. I’m’a be honest and say that I initially threw up my hands in despair over the bad writing and incomprehensible characterization that would have Pete tell Kinn that he wants to infiltrate the Minor Family house because he trusts Porsche when he literally just held him at gunpoint to prevent him from escaping with Vegas, which doesn’t look an awful lot like trust. But now I’m wondering if this is making the point that Pete, up until now, has put his own emotions and beliefs on the back burner, subsuming them to the Family’s needs. It doesn’t matter if he trusts Porsche, his duty is to stop Porsche from escaping, right? Only now, he’s watched Kinn be challenged by Porsche - trust or captivity? - and he’s watched Kinn let Porsche go. So is this our first sign that Pete is finally willing to start testing the boundaries and act on what he wants to do when he’s faced with conflicting loyalties? To be sure, he’s still asking permission to do it, he’s still walking the path of coaxing Kinn to his way of thinking before he’ll actually go through with it, but baby steps, right?

March 30, 2023 Monteverde, Costa Rica

Awoke to a view of clouds in the distance – though not the genesis of the Cloud Forest name. With a 9:00 AM start, we took our time rousing and headed down for a made-to-order breakfast: nice to be in a hotel without a breakfast buffet. Afterwards, we got ready back in the room and met Oscar and Roy, our driver, to head to the Curi Cancha Reserve (one of multiple private reserves in the area). We checked-in and even before we headed into the reserve, Oscar, calling us over with his normal affectionate “chicas,” gave us fantastic context about the Quaker influences in Costa Rica, and Monteverde specifically, and the genesis of the conservation movement here – fascinating. That while looking out at the hill across and the multitude of colorful humming birds on the bushes right in front of us. Despite the fact that they’re elusive, speedy little creatures, Jillebob managed to get a good pic!

As we started in on the trails, Oscar quickly heard from another guide about something ahead. We asked what, and he said something to the effect of “oh, some birds – two kinds” so as not to disappoint us if they were gone by the time we got there. He did not disappoint. There was a gathering of 25 people or so, huddled in small groups, gazing up at an avocado tree, pointing cameras, binoculars and large scopes like the one Oscar carried. There were hushed moments, interspersed with ohhs and ahhs, interspersed with talk about the birds in rather hushed tones, followed by everyone repositioning for new views. Everyone seemed respectful, giving each other space to see the quetzals. OMG! Neither of us came into this being bird people, but it’s impossible not to be awe’d by their beauty. Vibrant blues and greens with dark red and white on the breast, long flowing feathers in back and a mohawk on top. Simply stunning! The wind was, as usual, wild and when they were well within the tree leaves it was a matter of finding a glint of the bright emerald green to spot them among the green of the leaves. We alternated simply looking into the tree, using binoculars for close-ups, trying for a good photo, and looking though Oscar’s scope. The coolest thing is that Oscar had a gizmo to attach his phone to his scope. From that, we could see close ups through the phone’s camera and he was able to use it to take photos. It was still fun to try to get “the shot,” but so nice knowing that we’d have his photos regardless. Oscar was clearly enjoying himself as much as we were, and encouraged us to stay as long as we wanted. Another apparently good sighting was a crested guan whose speckled body was quite interesting but whose beauty paled in comparison to the quetzals. It was great to have the time to really observe the magnificent birds, and even see them fly a few times; it is, after all, mating season and they have to show off!

Finally, on we went and saw two more beautifully colored birds: a Lesson’s motmot posing on a “Don’t Feed the Wildlife” sign, also lovely blues and greens, and a collared trogon, whose orange was something new. Other creatures we saw (“friends” as Oscar called the wildlife of Monteverde) as we meandered up and down the trails: a large millipede; coati’s, racoon-like creatures with the strangest shape pointy nose with a flat end to sniff the ground; and an agouti (well-spotted Jillebob), the same creature we saw yesterday at the hotel. Oscar was a font of knowledge about both flora and fauna, clearly passionate about it all. His hope is that he will plant the seed of conservation with each tourist he guides. And he’ll be happy, if sometime in the future when they assume conservation practices, they think it’s something they thought of on their own! What a wonderful morning!

On the way back, we stopped at a women’s co-op with a mix of sort of kitchy things and quite lovely ones, most hand-made. Lunch was at a little local café at the back, with fresh fruit juices (blackberry for Jillebob; guava for Seb) and a tasty, thick corn tortilla topped with beans , shredded lettuce and tomato. Roy and Oscar dropped us at another craft place and we walked back to the hotel from there (a very short walk to the long steep driveway). Back at the room, we chilled before heading off again.

Our afternoon excursion was a three-part demonstration at a coffee plantation. Well, it used to be mostly a coffee plantation; now it does some of that, but does a good business of coffee/chocolate/sugar cane tours. Our guide, Ross was entertaining and the tour was fun and educational. There were a few kids in our group who Ross had participate in some of the demonstrations. It included chocolate making/tasting demonstrations (yum) and sugar cane juice tasting (sweet, but not at all exciting). And in the margins of the tour, Oscar entertained us further with everything from silly faces to playing with a bug who was walking around the demo of drying coffee beans. Fun facts we didn’t know: moisture is added to the coffee roasting process and coffee bean drying on raised racks copied from chocolate bean drying practices have accelerated the production process (slightly) without compromising quality. Of course, the overall pitch was that Costa Rican chocolate and coffee production using traditional methods are superior to volume-produced products every else in the world. At the end, we had a taste of honey coffee (yum); “moonshine” which was reminiscent of mouthwash; and hot chocolate that was to die for. Love all the nature we’ve been immersed in for two weeks, but this was a nice change.

Back at the room again, we had a short break over a glass of grape juice, and then off to Jillebob’s birthday dinner. Having a driver at our beck and call to get us to the restaurant – oh so nice. Allison’s was such a nice experience. Allison and a waiter were there. Not a lot of business; they’re only five months open and a bit out of town, presumably still unknown. The service was wonderful, chicken delish and we’re hopeful they get more well-known in the coming days/weeks/months.
