hello, I'm a younger transmasculine person and I was curious about a few things (for reference I live in the us in a fairly left state)
- how do you get started on testosterone?
I've never gotten a clear answer on this, some people said it took a two year queue, others could start immediately. idk when I want to start, but i dont want to be confused on what to do when I get the ball rolling
- are there alternatives to shots, and do they work better or worse?
I dont think I could do the shots myself unless there's no other options, something about them just makes my bones hurt
- how often do you have to apply T, and what happens if you forget to take it?
I'm pretty forgetful and I'll probably not take T on the scheduled date at least once, I hope that won't screw with anything because I don't really know if you've got to be consistent with it
- do you have any tips for clothing/voice training?
I think I pass at least a little okay but my voice is one of the things I'm most self conscious about. I also find myself spending 10-20 minutes every morning pulling my shirt against my chest to see if my binders working, and just end up wearing the same sweater I have for the past few weeks
sorry if that's alot, even if you're a stranger you're the first person I've been able to ask about these things. thank you so much
these are all great questions, i'm so glad you're taking the time to ask! this is extremely thorough and well thought out!
How do you get started on testosterone?
That's a great question, i feel like a lot of people have barriers to this one. if you are in a state where you have access to Planned Parenthood, this is usually a good place to start. check to see if you have a transgender resource center in your area. if not, go to whatever local lgbtq organization you can find, even one in a college. it is also possible to search gender affirming care [area], but clinicians aren't always available via Google
Here is a list of informed consent clinics that provide gender affirming care services, you may want to look here.
The process looks different for literally everyone, that's why no one can give you a clear answer, i'm so sorry! it's such a chaotic process for all of us. some trans men will literally get their prescription for testosterone within a month, others it does take years. do some research and see if therapy is required before hormones will be prescribed in your area. if not, you will likely have a much faster and easier time getting your hormones. if you don't need therapy, generally you'll just need to sign some consent forms and waivers stating that you are aware of what you are going to do to your body.
Are there alternatives to shots, and do they work better or worse?
all forms of testosterone are equally effective, it just depends on the dosage and the person. currently in the united states, you can get topical testosterone in the form of an alcohol based gel! it is applied topically to the upper forearms or abdomen, generally daily. it works just as well as the injectable testosterone, so long as you respond well to it! there is also the option of having your clinician do shots for you if you don't respond well to gel, as well.
nebido also may be available for FtM HRT in your area!
How often do you have to apply T, and what happens if you forget to take it?
Daily for topical gel, anywhere between twice a week, once a week, to once every two weeks for shots, depending on the person, how well they tolerate the medication, their transition goal, and the dosage.
Do you have any tips for clothing/voice training?
In terms of vocal training, AmaRoseLessons, Zoey Alexandria, and Trans Vocal Training are YouTube channels that can help with vocal training exercises, and i can also recommend the r/transvoice subreddit as well if you need help figuring out how to practice and ways to integrate what you learn into how you speak naturally!
For clothing, really anything goes, it depends on what you're going for and how you want to look. Remember that your personal style still gets to be included in the mix! Generally speaking, bulkier shapes that obscure the shoulders, hips and chest help a lot, layering of clothes, and wearing clothes with "boxier" cuts. Heavier shoes like boots may help, you may also find you like dress shoes. it really depends on your personal look, but generally speaking, i say go into the "men's" section and go nuts. Whatever they wear, you can wear too, and it gets the point across.
Hope that helps! Thanks for laying out your ask in such a concise way, that's much appreciated! If you need any more help feel free to ask!

News, commissions, tips, fundraising
I've registered Cat-Thulu Productions DBA Cat-Thulu with the State of Nevada. I need to raise the $30 or so dollars it'll cost to get the business license from the city, and I have a bunch of other stuff I need to get or pay for. The total works out to something around $460, and DoorDash has been EXTREMELY slow.
I'm looking for a job that pays better than I currently have - mine makes $13.25 an hour but it's a work-from-home position, which cuts down on gas a lot....IDK. I put in several applications AND I applied to Planned Parenthood for a position I am Very Qualified for but I also have Impostor Syndrome, so who knows.
But I've been working on some stuff.
Tumblr media
My workshop is actually a mess right now.
Tumblr media
These rune pendants are for some Norse pagans I know - Yule gifts. Obviously, there's multiple meanings for all runes, but the base meanings for these are Daegaz - daybreak/dawn, and Eywaz - Yew/Strength. Her name is literally Dawn, and he's like a pillar of strength. I've customized them to individual preferences for color and general appearance and hand-sanded them, but honestly, I need a dremel to finish polishing them up. I found the exact polishing compound I wanted in my roommate's dead grandmother's utility cabinet - she was a helluva hoarder. But now I need a fucking dremel.
Tumblr media
Harbor Freight doesn't have the best tools but the price is right. I'd need more accessories tho, especially for buffing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Either of these would be nice, but once again, the price is right:
Tumblr media
DoorDashing has been awful lately so I'm also super late on my rent (I usually pay $300 of it on the first; I've paid nothing) so I definitely do not have the money for this.
I also desperately need this, both for the tools and for the other accessories it comes with:
Tumblr media
So, commissions for jewelry, art, dioramas, writing, proofing, etc. - are ALL OPEN. Email cat.thulu.inc at gmail to discuss commissions. We'd love to make you something. Also, stay tuned for our awesome logo reveal!
Tips or donations would be gratefully accepted. For now, because I haven't had the money to start up a business bank account, I have to use my personal stuff.

(venmo is broken and in the negative by $400. Yeah.)

babe. babe, im so so sorry you had to go through that. um, if your friends are mad because you left because the owner is a white supremacist, it hurts a lot, no doubt about that, but maybe youre better off without them. ask your landlord if they can give you a break or maybe start a kofi page? im sure some of your followers would help out. im very sorry you and your gf parted. its horrible and awful and all i can recommend is finding something to snuggle, a pet or a warm pillow helps. about your roommate, that must be a very sorrowful thing. im sorry she had to leave. i hope you find a good one soon.
about the rape. lovely, i know you lost your primary care doc, but there are clinics and places that can help you. please, please, even if its just searching for five minutes, try and seek them out. if there are any planned parenthoods nearby, or their equivalent, or free clinics, or hey, some universities offer free therapies and pro bono um, sessions be it with a doctor or a therapist. just. please. dont put it away in a bottle and metaphorically toss it away. please, talk to someone. if you feel uncomfy about it being a stranger, a friend, virtual or not.
please dear. i know its hard and sometimes you just want to go to sleep for a thousand years, please talk to someone. find out where the nearest clinic is. you dont have to go, but the information will help you, ground you. youll know youll have a place to go if you should need it. also, and im very sorry if this, um, is trigger the word? i mix them up, if there is a womans shelter or a mans shelter, maybe pass by?
just know that whatever you need, you have people that care about you and wish you well. i hope things get better and i hope you can at least get a break from your landlord.
-someone who cares very much for you
Thanks for this. Losing the friends at the dungeon sucked, but you're right. If they're willing to stay members after finding out the owner is a literal proud boy, fuck'em. I have a new pcp, but I can't meet with them until February. I have had medical treatment for the rapes, don't worry. As for therapy- Thanks for the tips! I'll do that when things calm down. As for a kofi, I do have one actually for my main. If you want to donate, by all means but don't feel like you need too just because I have had a shit month and wrote a fic you liked. I still can't thank ya'll enough for your support. You're wonderful. https://ko-fi.com/neala_draws
I also want to clarify, I'm poly so I still have one gf left. I love her deeply and I'm not alone. But any poly person can tell you, it doesn't make getting dumped any easier. <3 That said, I'm tough as fuck and I'll be okay.

Okay yeah if they’ve (AO3) reached their goal then yeah they should probably stop the donations. Listen, I’m all for a site that has tags that you can include/exclude stuff (as long as authors actually tag their stories properly) and whatnot, but yeah no, all that extra money could be given to other people who need it. Oh that reminds me! Do you have a list of people/places that need donations? I want to help spread awareness and see if I can donate to some of them too
i’ll make this a separate post soon but here’s a list I was able to compile:

Boing Boing Charitable Giving Guide 2019
Tumblr media
Here's a guide to the charities the Boingers support in our own annual giving. Please add the causes and charities you give to in the forums!
Tumblr media
Friends of the Merril Collection I'm on the board of the charity that fundraises for Toronto's Merril Collection, a part of the Toronto Public Library system that is also the world's largest public collection of science fiction, fantasy and related works (they archive my papers). Since its founding by Judith Merril, the Merril Collection has been a hub for creators, fans, and scholars. I wouldn't be a writer today if not for the guidance of its Writer in Residence when I was a kid. —CD
Tumblr media
The Tor Project The Tor anonymity and privacy tools are vital to resistance struggles around the world, a cooperative network that provides a high degree of security from scrutiny for people who have reasons to fear the powers that be. From our early hominid ancestors until about ten years ago, humans didn't leave behind an exhaust-trail of personally identifying information as they navigated the world -- Tor restores that balance. —CD
Tumblr media
Planned Parenthood Because we deserve health care, including reproductive, gender, and sexual health care. Because access to birth control and safe abortion is a human right. Because Trump's regime wants to destroy all of this. —XJ
Tumblr media
Software Freedom Conservancy Software Freedom Conservancy does the important, boring, esoteric work of keeping the internet from tearing itself to pieces, playing host organization to free software projects like Git, Selenium and Samba (to name just three). The Conservancy keeps these projects legally sound and gives them a scaffold to hang their institutional structures on them. Without the Conservancy, the software you love and depend on would be in dire peril.
Tumblr media
Electronic Frontier Foundation I have been proudly associated with EFF for a decade an a half now and have watched, half-awed, as it grew from a scrappy, brilliant little organization to a powerhouse of enormous scale and power. Every cause, every fight enumerated on this page and in your life and mine will be lost or won on the internet. EFF is the best hope we have of keeping that internet free, fair and open. —CD, MF
Tumblr media
Creative Commons Creative Commons is best known as a tool for sharing-friendly artists, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Since the beginning, and all over the world, CC has provided governments, agencies, research and scholarly institutions and NGOs with the tools to easily share across borders and the bewildering array of copyright laws. We can't beat trumpism without collaboration tools, and that includes legal tools. —CD
Tumblr media
Wikimedia Foundation (Wikipedia) For 16 years, Wikipedia has been figuring out how to negotiate truth among diverse and even warring points of view. It's not always pretty and it's not always nice, but no one's yet found a better way to let ideas bash against each other until something everyone agrees upon emerges. It's not pretty, but compared to our democracy, it's a beauty queen. —CD, KS
Tumblr media
Human Rights Data Analysis Group For more than twenty-five years, the Human Rights Data Analysis Group (HRDAG) has used data and statistical analysis to hold accountable the perpetrators of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. HRDAG is a nonprofit, non-partisan organization that provides rigorous quantitative evidence for trials, truth commissions, UN Missions, and human rights monitors around the world. In 2019, HRDAG estimated the number of women held as sexual slaves by Japanese authorities in World War Two; the number of people disappeared in the final three days of the Sri Lankan civil war; and the number of people killed in drug-related violence by the police and other perpetrators in the Philippines. In the US, HRDAG critiqued the growing use of machine learning in the US criminal justice system, especially those used in place of bail to determine who should be released while awaiting trial. HRDAG's analysis has shown that machine learning can amplify biases in criminal justice data, for example by worsening racial disparities in policing. Other ongoing HRDAG projects include research on mass violence in the Philippines, Mexico, Sri Lanka, and several confidential projects in the US and abroad . —CD

Institute for the Future There are no facts about the future, only fictions. As we've learned in this crazy political season, nothing is certain about tomorrow. But even as our attention is captured by the present, we can begin to write the story to come. A place to start is the Institute for the Future's Future for Good fellowship. Institute for the Future, where Mark and David are researchers, is a 50-year-old nonprofit that helps the public think about the future to make better decisions in the present. The Fellowship directly supports inspiring social innovators who are working to make tomorrow a better place. You can help too. Make a donation of $100 and you’ll receive IFTF Distinguished Fellow Bob Johansen's new book "The New Leadership Literacies: Thriving in a Future of Extreme Disruption and Distributed Everything." —DP, MF
Tumblr media
The National Wildlife Federation National Wildlife Federation is a voice for wildlife, dedicated to protecting wildlife and habitat and inspiring the future generation of conservationists. Now's the time: for the people currently in charge of U.S. policy, the cruelty is the point. —RB
Tumblr media
The Marine Mammal Center When seals, sea lion, or many other sea going pals need help, if they get lucky, they may be taken to The Marine Mammal Center, a veterinary hospital just for them. Thousands of heartbreakingly cute, but very wild, animals are rescued, rehabilitated and released on an annual basis. I'm a volunteer. In addition to the hundreds of highly trained volunteers that make the hospital run, the center always needs cash for fish and medicine. —JW
Tumblr media
Winn Feline Foundation The Winn Feline Foundation advances feline health by supporting research and education. Winn has funded over $6.4 million in health research for cats at more than 30 partner institutions worldwide. Current campaigns include funding for research on Chronic Kidney Disease, a condition estimated to affect more than 50% of senior cats. —KS
Tumblr media
The Southern Poverty Law Center & the Anti-Defamation League The Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defemation League fight hate, teach tolerance, and help secure justice, and fair treatment for all. "There is no 'them' and 'us.' There is only us." --Greg Boyle —JW
Tumblr media
Facing History and Ourselves Facing History and Ourselves is an international educational group that helps young people study issues around racism, antisemitism, and prejudice in history, from the Holocaust to today's immigrant experiences to the killing fields of Cambodia. Their aim is to teach young people "to think critically, to empathize, to recognize moral choices, to make their voices heard, we put in their hands the possibility--and the responsibility--to do the serious work demanded of us all as citizens." —DP
Tumblr media
Free Software Foundation/Defective By Design The Free Software Foundation's principled litigation, license creation and campaigning is fierce, uncompromising and has changed the world. You interact with code that they made possible a million times a day, and they never stop working to make sure that the code stays free. —CD
Tumblr media
Free Software Foundation Europe Software has eaten the world, and software freedom is increasingly synonymous with human freedom. In Europe, far-right parties and authoritarians are inheriting a constellation of gadgets and devices that are "defective by design," built to allow corporations spy on and control their owners -- and those thugs are contemplating how they can use those companies' extraordinary powers to put whole populations under their thumbs. Free software in Europe, free software everywhere! —CD
Tumblr media
The Internet Archive: In an era where the control of information has been weaponized, the Internet Archive's mission -- universal access to all human knowledge -- is a revolutionary manifesto. The Archive has taken on a new mission: to re-decentralize the internet and restore it to its indie, distributed glory. —CD
Tumblr media
Open Rights Group The UK's answer to Electronic Frontier Foundation, and never more badly needed than now, with authoritarianism on the rise and the constant battering of the electorate with political misadventures and grandstanding. Brexit could allow the UK to escape the oversight of the European courts, paving the way for even-more-extreme measures. —CD
Tumblr media
Amnesty International I just looked up Amnesty's founding principles and found tears rolling down my cheeks: "Only when the last prisoner of conscience has been freed, when the last torture chamber has been closed, when the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a reality for the world’s people, will our work be done." These values need our support more than ever. —CD
Tumblr media
ACLU On November 9, 2016 ACLU changed its homepage to a picture of Trump superimposed with the words SEE YOU IN COURT. ACLU's deep bench of kick-ass lawyers has been lately augmented by a much-needed group of freedom-fighting technologists, welded into the fighting force we'll need until the next election and beyond: from voter suppression to free speech, the ACLU is key to the fight. —CD, MF
Tumblr media
Liberty With the UK plunging into surveillance dystopia where human rights are an afterthought and racial profiling is becoming official doctrine, it needs Liberty, an organisation with 80+ years' track record fighting for human rights in many incarnations of the British project. The Tories ran on a platform of repealing the Human Rights Act: when the government is officially anti "human rights," you need someone like Liberty to take the "pro" side. —CD
Tumblr media
826 National Born in San Francisco’s Mission District in the back room of a pirate supply store, 826 National teaches young people the art and magic of creative writing through classes, DIY publishing projects, in-school programs, and drop-in tutoring at seven centers around the US. And it’s all free for the kids. Help open more 826 locations around the country! —DP
Tumblr media
Fight for the Future Some of the Internet's savviest, hard-working-est activists. Fight for the Future has kept hope alive for Net Neutrality, leading the charge to use the Congressional Review Act to overturn the FCC's Neutrality-killing sneak attack. —CD
Tumblr media
Demand Progress Aaron Swartz co-founded Demand Progress, and as you'd expect from that history, they're relentless in reinventing the activist playbook for the 21st century. —CD
Tumblr media
MySociety Software in the public interest -- it's a damned good idea. MySociety produces software like Pledgebank ("I will risk arrest by refusing to register for a UK ID card if 100,000 other Britons will also do it") and TheyWorkForYou (every word and deed by every Member of Parliament). It's plumbing for activists and community organizers. —CD

Hey, so you have any tips on how to avoid being crushed by all the bad news in the world and the feeling like none of us will have a future? Thinking about all the bad politics and the climate crisis, copyright laws and our horrible economy is so overwhelming and I can't deal with it.
I feel you on this one! I actually have a segment on my podcast (Your New Apartment on Apple/Spotify) called “The Good News” during which I specifically focus on positive and uplifting news stories. We are so inandated with negativity that it can feel overwhelming and upsetting.
Some things you can do:
Fill your social media feeds with positivity. Cute animals, positive news stories, uplifting and encouraging posts, etc.
Unfollow or mute people or accounts that make you feel upset or triggered.
Engage in change you can accomplish on a local level. Donate unused clothes or hygiene products to shelters. Voulanteer at a food pantry. Organize a trash clean up.
Get involved in local groups and help canvas. You can help canvas for politicians you like or political parties, or even help positive organizations like Planned Parenthood raise money.
Make sure you’re registered to vote. And fucking vote. Vote in the primaries. Vote for a candidate who can actually win right now- don’t vote third party. That’s a fight for another day.
Remind yourself that good things are happening out there! I read articles from Good News Network and R/Uplifting News on my podcast.
Consider doing media/technology blackouts one a daily basis to reconnect with yourself. Go outside and experience the beauty of nature! Go on a hike.

FTH 2019 Totals
We had 368 fans offer 459 fanworks for auction, in over 200 different fandoms.
You guys bid over $15,000 for these fanworks, but that’s only the beginning of the story. $15,000 would have been amazing, but we rocketed way past that. Dozens of people donated amounts above and beyond their high bids. An astonishing 143 of our creators offered additional works to the second bidders in their auctions. We had a few people who doubled or even tripled their original bids -- and one fan who did it again when donating for her second-highest-bidder auctions. One fan "rounded up" each of her three bids to $1,000 apiece. And we had 6 people who threw in donations that weren’t even connected to a specific auction, just because they wanted to support these great organizations!
Thanks to hundreds of fans working together and showing how generous and powerful fandom can be, this year's auction raised a total of...
....
......
$23,435!!!
And that's not even counting the extra pennies and dollars that so many of you donated to cover processing fees or to tip the platforms that help these small organizations take in donations.
The vast, overwhelming share of those donations went to tiny organizations that are operating on very limited budgets. Here is the breakdown of donations by organization:
Border Angels: $1,353
Center for Public Integrity: $1,079
ConPRMetidos: $1,586
Flippable: $644.55
Higher Heights: $765
Life After Hate: $1,062
RAICES: $2,515
RAINN: $3,615
Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights: $2714.25
Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund: $1,521.25
the Trevor Project: $5,554
Unsilence: $625
...and a handful of donations to other organizations (such as Planned Parenthood, HIAS, the Rainforest Trust, MSF, and the San Francisco Homeless Prenatal Program), totaling $401.
Over the three years that this auction has been happening, you all have raised a combined $74,254.33.  And you'd better believe that we'll be doing it again next year. We hope you'll be a part of it.
We’ll start posting details about next year’s auction sometime in December. Here are some things you can do in the meantime:
1) Follow FTH2019fanworks. (https://fth2019fanworks.tumblr.com/) In years past, we have used the offerings blog from the auction to reblog completed fanworks. This year, since we ran the auction on dreamwidth, we've created a brand-new tumblr for reblogging FTH fanworks. You can follow that blog if you have your own tumblr account, or browse it (either by tags or just scrolling through) if you don't.
2) Keep up with the groups you have contributed to. Every single group on this list is doing extraordinary work, and every single one of them is doing it on a very small budget. We've already made their financial situation a bit more comfortable with the auction. But these groups will certainly be grateful for more financial support in three months, or six... and they also need your support in non-financial ways.
One great thing you can do for each of these groups, whether or not you donated to them during the auction, is to sign up for updates to stay current with their work. Simply being aware of the problems they are fighting, and the work they are doing to counteract them, is also valuable.
3) Run your own fandom-specific auction! Big pan-fandom auctions are.. well, they're big and pan-fandom. Our reach is broad, but in some ways, it's also shallow, and there's a lot of management that goes into juggling all the different fandoms involved. But fandom-specific auctions are easier to run, and easier to publicize, and they help bring out people who might not show up for a big pan-fandom thing.
If you’re interested in organizing an auction in your fandom, we will help you get started by sharing our playbook and our organizational materials with you. Just drop us an email at fandomtrumpshate at gmail dot com.
Thanks, everyone. We'll see you next year.
