Brief Hiatus for RANGER
Hi Everyone, the monthly update's for RANGER are going to be temporarily (I promise) suspended.
I'm currently working on an actual play project that's been eating up most of my creativity juice, but if you've enjoyed RANGER you may enjoy the podcast as well.
It's a science fiction + mech story about an unpopular war, and the typed of warped people who would fight in them. Currently we're playing beamsaber - an offshoot of Blades in the Dark.
You can listen to it in any podcast app, or on youtube (links below)
Link to Youtube Podcast
I may post some RANGER updates from time to time, but I just wanted to give all a heads up.
Thanks a ton!

i do unironically think the best artists of our generation are posting to get 20 notes and 3 reblogs btw. that fanfic with like 45 kudos is some of the best stuff ever written. those OCs you carry around have some of the richest backstories and worldbuilding someone has ever seen. please do not think that reaching only a few people when you post means your art isn't worth celebrating.

I honestly and truly believe all good AUs should be a little “”””ooc”””” in the sense that good characterisation involves understanding that changes a characters backstory and circumstances will have an effect on how they respond to the world around them
Good characterisation isn’t about creating a perfect 1:1 canon replica it’s about understanding why a character is different in your work and about grounding the changes you do deliberately choose to make in canon character traits

Do any aliens live in the Sol Union? or is it all humans and dolphins?
Great question!
There are some aliens that live in the Sol Union but they are an extreme minority.  For the most part - alien species are exceptionally different from each other, and have difficulty co-existing, especially in a society that is technologically quite far behind most other species.
The most common that has appeared in the Sol Union are the 'Vested' (our word, not theirs). They are a parasitic species, not too unlike the fungi of earth. In the past they would eject themselves through space on large bio-ships, crash landing into habitable planets and releasing vast clouds of spores. These spores would come in contact with other living organisms, and then embed themselves within them.
The spores could lay dormant for many years, before making their ultimate decision. Either they would
A: Kill the creature, and turn it into a large, violent spore cloud, typically by bursting out of any available orifice.
B: Take over the creature's nervous system, and merge with its mind to turn it into a carrier - often finding other carriers on the same planet and creating a new bio-ship to go find a new planet to inhabit.
Tumblr media
Visual depictions of three vested.
Typically, the brain of the creature (or whatever served the purpose of the creature's brain) would be overtaken by the fungus, usually bursting out of it and forming these diverse brilliant, geometric, fungal bodies.
(more art below)
Nowadays, the Vested know not to colonize planets with any advanced life on them, and have engineered themselves such that they only release spores if they intend to (for instance if they find an interested host).
Those Vested in the Sol Union (as far as we are aware) have had their hosts consent for the merging, and claim they are quite happy with their new forms - and new state of being. The new form retains all of the memories of their hosts, and many but not all of the mannerisms, habits, and tastes.
It is a philosophical question of if that person is still the same being, or just a simulacra created by the Vesting process.
In terms of rarity, most humans go their entire lives without meeting a Vested - only learning about them in schooling. They very, very rarely hold high-visibility positions despite their aptitudes.
Tumblr media
Showing more of one of the Vested.
As far as their acceptance in society, it’s a mixed bag as with any cultural minority. Some love them, some hate them, most are unsure of what to make of them given their lack of exposure.
Nevertheless, they do a decent job of co-existing with the rest of humanity, and are quite sought after for their increased resilience, and impressive intuition.
(thanks to Sunlith’s player @aurosoulart for the awesome depiction of the Vested)
I hope that answers most of it! Thanks for writing in.

One of the most memorable interactions was Saturday. Into our booth strolls a small family, tempted by free samples of freshly brewed tea. We chatter and give them the spiel, that the tea is character merch and we’re a cozy health-based app called Forage Friends.
The young girl zeroes in on our pride pins.
“They have my pin!” She says excitedly. “They have my flag!”
The dad blinks. He is surprised, but also calm and positive when he sees it’s the lesbian flag. “Oh. That’s… different from what you told me.”
“That was months ago, dad.” And she rolls her eyes. Definitely a teenager.
I turn to him and say, “Yeah, dad.” And we share a little laugh about it.
He says, “No, it’s great. That’s amazing, honey. It was just news to me.”
“Well, I guess I just decided to stop lying to myself. About liking guys. Like right now.”
A little lesbian just came out to her dad and he was super cool about it.
I’m standing there in my tie-dye mask and my cheery blue apron pouring tea and making small talk and I’m trying really hard not to cry or compare it to my experience, the fire & brimstone, the disgust, the conditional acceptance as long as I never bring it up.
So as this beautiful bonding is going on, the girl’s even younger brother turns his gaze around. He’s in a snorlax hoodie and bored and wants to go look at the swords across the hall. But on the other side of our booth….
“WHY DO PEOPLE DRAW THAT?” He asks loudly, and we all turn to our neighboring booth.
Our neighbors were extremely lovely people. Every time we had a break we would talk, and we became good friends over the weekend. They kept apologizing that their booth was next to ours and we kept repeating that it was totally fine. Their booth was great. I even bought their merchandise.
The thing that was so contentious, that they felt the need to apologize for, was that they were selling explicit titty hentai stickers of popular characters. They were censored with little yellow R18 labels but the content was very clear.
So back to the family: I freeze and immediately go somewhere else to let dad handle this question. With adult customers I’ve been loud and positive about our neighbors. (“Man, how has it been boothing next to them?” It’s been great! They bring a lot of foot traffic and they’re kind and wonderful professional neighbors. If anything it’s a fun juxtaposition. We believe in artistic freedom. I bought a sticker too!)
But this is a kid, it’s not my place to explain anything…. But I was extremely curious about what this chill dad would say.
“Well,” dad says with a long measured silence between each word. “Sometimes people are horny.”

looking at (vetted) gofundmes for people trying to escape palestine and i don't know how many of you actually click on the gofundme links you reblog but i would like to point out, for what it's worth, just how amazing it is that so many have raised so much money. it may overall feel like a drop in the ocean but the fact that several gofundmes have raised tens of thousands of dollars is amazing. it is so expensive to leave gaza right now, and people still need money after they escape. but regardless of what propaganda the US, UK, canada, and other western nations are trying to pump out, people across the world are doing what they can to help these people survive. many of them are still very far from their goals (like this one and this one and this one) and some of them are very close to high goals (like this one), and some of them have reached almost double their original goal.
and that's not even addressing direct aid or organizations that take continuous donations for distribution of food, menstrual products, etc. the PCRF has raised $16,000,000 of their target goal of $20,000,000 to fund current aid and long-term relief efforts in gaza. ANERA's febuary 13th update discusses the material ways they helped palestinians today:
Tumblr media
(ANERA donate link)
my point is, it often feels like the world is turning a blind eye to palestine. but i would like to point out that there is an important difference between "the world" and "western political leaders and media narratives". a breathtaking amount of real people, the people who make up the world, are trying to help. in the face of israel attempting to commit genocide, the world is saying No. These people deserve to live. and literally sending millions of dollars internationally, through the internet connection that israel has desperately been trying to destroy.
it may not feel like it matters in the grand scheme of things. but to the people who get fresh clothes, or a hot meal, or blankets, or the kids who get new toys, or to the people who are able to bring their families to safety, it matters to them. go make someone's day better. i've linked so many options with ways to do that.
