I was just thinking about The Charioteer's ending and how, at the time the book was written, most gay books (if not all gay books) ended with suicides and tragedy. I love how Mary Renault just plays into the expectative. Ehm... obvious spoilers under the cut.

So, we see Laurie lose Andrew because of Bunny (was he really his to lose, that's a discussion for another time, I guess) and then confront Ralph because of what he supposedly did. Now, the smart reader probably had caught the clues by now: that was really out of character for Ralph to have done, plus the line in Andrew's letter saying that he didn't seem like how he had imagined Ralph to be. So they would know that Laurie was probably unfair and that he broke Ralph's heart, and probably assumed that Ralph was gonna kill himself, and then Laurie would be left all alone and feeling guilty, and either will kill himself too or would go and do something stupid like marrying nurse Adrian (even though she's wonderful, just not for him). But then Renault made her wonderful plot twist by introducing Alec in the scene, just in time for Laurie to go and save Ralph, giving us hope for a happy ending.

This book was meta before the word "meta" even existed, and that's why I adore Renault's writing.

Btw, talking about the last paragraph. "Now their heads droop side by side till their long manes mingle; and when the voice of the charioteer falls silent they are reconciled for a night in sleep." I interpret that like Ralph and Laurie's bodies mingling in sex until they fall asleep together. The charioteer in this could be Laurie's thoughts (doubts) finally falling silent as he accepts his true feelings for Ralph. I don't know. Am I reading too much into it?

I'm just happy believing that they fall asleep together with their bodies intertwined, reconciled and satisfied.

This is so interesting!! I said to myself, ‘But I do judge Madge more harshly! Am I suffering from internalised misogyny?’ There are two things for me. One is that she does it while Reg is nearly dead on a beach in Dunkirk, and the second is that it involves a child. Oh, hang on! Just realised that this is what Laurie’s mother does to him, she unilaterally removes his father from his life. I wonder if that incredibly reckless ruse with the telegram is not just about loyalty to Reg, but also to do with his feelings for the child, and not wanting Reg to be cut out of his life? Maybe? That thought has literally never occurred to me before.

But I agree the two are not treated equally in the book, and perhaps Alec is given a free pass. I have no evidence for this, but I wonder if Mary wanted to have a character who was promiscuous but in other ways a sympathetic character as a counter-point to those religious characters who believe in ‘purity’ but are actually pretty callous and cruel. As if to say sexual promiscuity is not the greatest crime.

But anyway, what is my beef with Alec? For me it’s more that he throws Laurie under the bus by failing to warn him how vulnerable Ralph is. That's interesting because it parallels what you said in a way! I can see why he might be hesitant (just as I can see him judging that it’s pointless trying to persuade Ralph that Bunny is not all he seems), but he also freely admits to liking a quiet life, and he does seem to be indulging in some magical thinking about Laurie ‘saving’ Ralph somehow. I am more and more convinced his judgement is impaired because he is not really over Ralph – the comment about ‘full time passengers’ could easily be referring to himself.

But.......I think we can agree that Sandy/Alec is one of the most intriguing relationships in the book and is there to make us think! You have made me think a bit more about Alec's frailties and flaws and the possible reasons for this too. One thing that did stun me rather was learning that long after TC was published, Mary's long-term partner had a mental breakdown. I'm not sure we know how Mary felt about it. I found it incredibly poignant that she had written so movingly about mental illness in TC and at least tried to show some nuance, even if it feels as if Sandy is given a bit of a raw deal.

I (mod aimee) was having a Thought re: Sandy, which is that although he and Ralph don't like each other he doesn't seem to find Ralph threatening to his and Alec's relationship (at least in my analysis.) I would hazard a guess that this is because he can tell that Ralph isn't looking to get back with Alec, which means he's "safe" from that angle, whatever Sandy might perceive Alec's feelings to be towards Ralph. I would however say that Sandy probably feels a bit of a third wheel intellectually when he, Ralph, and Alec are in company, because Ralph clearly thinks Sandy isn't that bright and Alec also seems to view him as a little less smart (or maybe less deep a thinker?) than himself and Ralph. I don't think Alec rubs that in on purpose, or that he necessarily expresses this to Sandy in so many words, but he does seem to view Sandy as less mature and developed in his mind than Alec himself, or than Ralph. Which, fair, but I bet it stings Sandy a bit, especially since Ralph definitely doesn't hide his opinions, so it probably feels like they've got a bit of a coalition going on sometimes.

Also, speaking of being less deep as a thinker, Alec complains about Sandy's fits of jealousy and histrionics, which, also fair, but it never seems to occur to him that he directly contributes to that by repeatedly engaging in the exact behavior that he knows causes those fits. Sandy's definitely responsible for how he chooses to act, he's a grownup with his own agency. But Alec pushes his buttons all the time and then wonders why he gets a response.

I...........don't think I have any? I'm a Ralph girlie through and through, I really don't give much thought to Laurie except that sometimes I want to shake him real bad and knock some sense into him 😅

13. Which TC character needs therapy the most?

Ralph, 100%. He needs to be in therapy yesterday. I love him to death but oh my god. Honey. Please get yourself a therapist I am begging you (and so is Laurie).

16. Missing scene you're most curious about.

Oh, gosh, so many! Fanfic writers have filled in a lot of the gaps for us, thank goodness, but I still wonder what MR would have done with some of these scenes. I would have loved to see Ralph's time sailing on the merchant ships after he left school. I also would have wanted MR to actually show us the wedding night, and the scene after "come and say goodbye to me." And I would have loved more Ralph and Alec scenes.

19. Secondary character that needs more love.

Alec! I adore him and I want to know everything about him. I firmly believe that he's the man Ralph broke his "two years of women" contract for. I want to read an entire book about his and Ralph's relationship. And now that you put this idea into my head, I also believe that he and Ralph were hooking up during the book, at least until Ralph finally turns his attention to Laurie instead. But ugh Alec breaks my heart and I love him.

Ralph the social performer

@nurseadriansbrother I am just responding to your amazing post about Ralph/Alec and the different relationship parallels. There were so many interesting things!

But I thought I would just pick the theme of the two parties, Alec’s birthday and The Wedding, and the idea that they don’t really fit into either!! I just love this, it’s such a key theme but I hadn’t thought of it exactly that way.

I mean, Ralph at Alec’s party says he nearly didn’t come at all, and then he’s disappearing every five minutes and saying to Laurie ‘let’s get out of here’. And my favourite little bit:

"Are you all right, Spud? You look a bit done in."

"I'm all right," he said.

"Yes, I know, you feel like a million dollars. Only....I'm going to get you out of this and back to bed."

Coming back to that theme of introvert/extravert, the thing that really struck me about the Wedding was that once Ralph is there, Laurie can’t help deferring to him and he is showing him off as if to say ‘I must have something going for me if I’ve got a friend like this!’ It really feels like he thinks he needs Ralph to mediate the social world for him. And in a way, that strange little internal monologue after the Wedding Night is the same:

“If his wishes had not been fulfilled with such experienced intuition, he need never, perhaps, have been certain what they were.”

I find it so weird – he attributes Ralph with this extreme ‘gaydar’, but it is part of him not realising he is giving out quite strong signals and unaware of it!

I think what Laurie may not realise is that Ralph’s social competence has been hard won and that Ralph is highly motivated, it is in his nature to want desperately to fit in and he is simultaneously driven to it and painfully aware of the effort it involves, and the knowledge that he will never ‘naturalise’ as he puts it.

Whereas Laurie, despite his paranoia about hiding himself, many of the other characters see through it, but they still accept him. He tends to be the one doing the rejecting. But if he really is an introvert, he will feel uncertain, but also his need to 'fit in' will genuinely be less important, compared to his need to have it right in his head:

" if I don't do what seems right to me, it won't be any good in the end." whereas Ralph is more focused on the outcome, ie, what if he decides and it turns out wrong.

I love the parallel with Sandy hero-worshipping Alec being like Laurie and Ralph – and then there is this very telling one:

“Perhaps it was admiration that caused him to commit such violent assaults on Alec's emotions, as a small child will pummel an adult, not believing that it can really hurt him.”

Which to me is exactly what Laurie does to Ralph with that tirade on the stairs.

Anyway, not sure what I am trying to say there, but there are so many references to Ralph ‘performing’ and it always seems so poignant.
