Daily Devotional: Ephesians 5:11-21
The calling on the life of the Christian is to form the world positively. We are instructed not to participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness—what Paul has already called immoral, impure, and covetous. Unfruitfulness is evil. Before we take this too far and become workaholics, we do recognize that rest to the proper degree is fruitful for our bodies, as are many leisure activities. God…

One of the things that still amazes me is, the way Jesus transforms lives. I have seen drug addicts and alcoholics being totally set free and living transformed lives. They excel in their studies and even in their jobs. They live holy lives. Jesus came to set the captives free (Luke 4:18). The blood of Jesus was shed to set us free from sin and deliver us from every bondage of the enemy.
The Bible says, “Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Corinthians 5:7). Jesus Christ, our sacrificial Lamb, shed His blood to set us free from whatever it is that’s enslaving us.
What are you struggling with today? Anger, depression, addiction, lust? You can be released from captivity – not by your own futile efforts – but by calling out to Jesus who answers the cries of His people.

JOKE-OGRAPHY:
Jesus says, "Blessed are the poor in spirit." The priest in this cartoon asks his students what they think He meant. The girl who raises her hand says her father only feels blessed when he's POURIN' spirits, which implies her father is a drinker. The joke is that "poor in spirit" (Jesus's quote) sounds like "pouring spirits" (i.e. drinking spirits, as in alcohol), so the girl is confusing the two terms and implying that Jesus meant people who drink a lot of alcohol feel blessed.

Words of Wisdom Are Better than Gold
1 It isn't smart to get drunk!
Drinking makes a fool of you
and leads to fights.
2 An angry ruler
is like a roaring lion—
make either one angry,
and you are dead.
3 It makes you look good
when you avoid a fight—
only fools love to quarrel.
4 If you are too lazy to plow,
don't expect a harvest.
5 Someone's thoughts may be
as deep as the ocean,
but if you are smart,
you will discover them.
6 There are many who say,
“You can trust me!”
But can they be trusted?
7 Good people live right,
and God blesses the children
who follow their example.
8 When rulers decide cases,
they weigh the evidence.
9 Can any of us really say,
“My thoughts are pure,
and my sins are gone”?
10 Two things the Lord hates
are dishonest scales
and dishonest measures.
11 The good or bad
that children do
shows what they are like.
12 Hearing and seeing
are gifts from the Lord.
13 If you sleep all the time,
you will starve;
if you get up and work,
you will have enough food.
14 Everyone likes to brag
about getting a bargain.
15 Sensible words are better
than gold or jewels.
16 You deserve to lose your coat
if you loan it to someone
to guarantee payment
for the debt of a stranger.
17 The food you get by cheating
may taste delicious,
but it turns to gravel.
18 Be sure you have sound advice
before making plans
or starting a war.
19 Stay away from gossips—
they tell everything.
20 Children who curse their parents
will go to the land of darkness
long before their time.
21 Getting rich quick
may turn out to be a curse.
22 Don't try to get even.
Trust the Lord,
and he will help you.
23 The Lord hates dishonest scales
and dishonest weights.
So don't cheat!
24 How can we know
what will happen to us
when the Lord alone decides?
25 Don't fall into the trap
of making promises to God
before you think!
26 A wise ruler severely punishes
every criminal.
27 Our inner thoughts are a lamp
from the Lord,
and they search our hearts.
28 Rulers are protected
by God's mercy and loyalty,
but they must be merciful
for their kingdoms to last.
29 Young people take pride
in their strength,
but the gray hairs of wisdom
are even more beautiful.
30 A severe beating can knock all
of the evil out of you!

Me at the liquor store, trying to get some bubbly for New Years, but kind of lost because I hardly ever buy alcohol: Well, there's no point in getting anything too fancy, since we won't be drinking it until midnight, and by then everyone is already a bit pickled and won't notice.
Also me: Whoah, out of all the morals to remember from the Bible...
(John 2:10: "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine.")

Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Proverbs 20:1
Do not be deceived by the party culture. Do not be lured by alcohol. While wine and beer and other alcoholic beverages are popular and promise a good time, more often these drinks make fools of us. Too much alcohol leaves one intoxicated. When someone is intoxicated, he/she does not make wise choices. Many people think alcohol gives us relief from worry and pain. True relief only comes from faith in Jesus Christ. Ask Him to help you resist the temptation today.
Dear God, give me wisdom to know when I am being led in a foolish direction. Help me to resist the temptation of alcohol today. Give me the courage to turn away from alcohol or anything offering false promises of happiness. You are the only thing that will bring me true fulfillment. Thank you for giving us refuge and courage to battle temptations such as these. Please use me to help others struggling with these temptations, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen

"Whereas the Bible explicitly forbids drunkenness, it nowhere requires total abstinence. Make no mistake: total abstinence from alcohol is great. As a Christian you are certainly free to adopt that as a lifestyle. But you are not free to condemn those who choose to drink in moderation."

Overcoming Addiction as a Christian
On August 17th 2020, JJ was 1 year sober. This is his testimony about overcoming substance abuse addiction as a Christian who really is living for Christ. Contrary to popular belief, marijuana is addictive and affects people negatively. For him, it became his idol. His hope is that this video uplifts and edifies the body of Christ and glorifies God!
