In Togruta culture, headdresses are either an accessory—like some Twi’lek scarves/headbands—or a sign of a great victory. In The Clone Wars, Ahsoka’s gold headdress is actually made of teeth from an Akul that she killed. It’s kept as a trophy! I know bald Ahsoka was a shock to many, so here’s some lore :)

Rex watched as his brunette General waltzed into the room with his young Togrutan Padawan trailing behind him. The blonde Captain raised an eyebrow as he watched Ahsoka glance around frantically and upon spotting him, wave frantically. Rex grinned. He couldn’t help it.

“Alright Rex, how long until we land?” Anakin asked, moving to stand beside his Captain.

“Ten minutes, General,” he replied.

“Good!” The Knight cheered, smiling widely as he rested a hand on top of Ahsoka’s head - in the bridge between her montrals. “Snips and I will lead the ground assault on the right, whilst you can take the left, Rex.” Anakin gently massaged Ahsoka’s montrals absent-mindedly.

Both men froze when the Togruta let out a purr.

“Did you just purr, Commander?” Rex spluttered out as they stared at the small girl. She nodded in response, shrugging absent-mindedly whilst nudging her head further against Anakin’s palm, silently asking for more.

“Yuh,” she replied. “It’s a Togruta thing.”

“Of course it is,” Anakin muttered, although smiled fondly when Ahsoka continued purring as he stroked her montrals and lekku. “Is there anything else you can do that you aren’t telling us?”

Ahsoka thought for a second - lips pursed - before nodding. “I teeth.”

“You what now?” Anakin asked, brows furrowed.

“I teeth, y’know, like how baby mastiffs do,” she explained. “My baby teeth are sore when they're about to fall out so I bite stuff to help with the pain and help get them out quicker.” Rex looked to her in surprise.

“What have you been using to teeth on?!”

“Oh, mostly carrots and sometimes sticks.”

“Please tell me you clean the sticks first.”

“Of course I do, Rexy!” She laughed before freezing. “See, look! This is one of my adult teeth!” Ahsoka bared her teeth at her Master and pointed at one very shiny and sharp fang and Anakin gaped.

“You're like a Loth-cat!”

“Really, Skyguy?”

“Y’know,” Rex intervened, before the sibling fight could get any worse. He loved his brother and sister very dearly, but he had a question. “What does your headpiece mean?” He pointed at the golden headpiece secured to Ahsoka’s head and the Togruta beamed proudly.

“Those are akul teeth!” She began, clearly enthusiastic about the topic. “I earned them by fighting an akul unarmed! It’s a Togrutan tradition to kill an akul and take its teeth! Master Ti took me when I was little!”

Anakin and Rex exchanged worried glances.

“Vod’ika,” the clone began. “You fought an akul unarmed?”

“Yep!”

“Snips, how big is an akul exactly?”

“It’s shoulders reach about here,” Ahsoka replied, holding her hand up to about Anakin’s shoulder height and both men froze in horror.

“You fought something that big?” Rex spluttered and Anakin pulled Ahsoka closer to him, wrapping his arms around her protectively.

“Yep!”Rex sighed as Anakin closed his eyes, resting his chin very gently on the bridge between Ahsoka’s montrals. “I’m never letting you out of my sight again, Vod’ika.”

Vod'ika = little sister.

Tales of the Jedi trailer just dropped!

I think that's an Akul! We're finally getting to see them!

You know baby Soka saw this thing and thought, kitty.

I mean, she's booping it's nose, the Akul is friend.

Baby Soka riding giant cat, it's adorable!

And I think, at the end with the Inquisitor, are they bringing stuff from the Ahsoka book into the show?!

Please bring Kaeden! I want to see her so bad!

I'm so hyped for this show! It's gonna be awesome and it looks beautiful! I can't wait!

What do you mean you were right? What did Disney do this time?

I was joking, but if you wanna know what I was on about I'll gladly explain!

Yesterday the trailer for Tales of the Jedi dropped, and we got a few seconds to see lil baby 'Soka interact with what I can only assume is an Akul. The apex predator of Shili that constitutes an important role in the Togruta society's cultural rite of passage.

Sorry for the bad quality, these are very brief flashes so screenshotting them was hell for my old mac.

We've only ever had a very brief description of what Akul look like, and have only seen them via the Akul-Tooth headdresses that both Shaak-Ti and Ahsoka wear.

No one headdress is the same which is cool.

Naturally I wasn't too fond of the idea that there's this legendary super-adaptive predator that the Togruta both fear and admire, and that we might never really get a proper look at anything but their teeth, so back in February I decided to create a fan design for the Akul.

I had decided that the best approach to designing them would be to mash two real animals together, rather than free-styling it and ending up something out of Alien instead of Star Wars.

The ingredients for a good SW creature is usually mashing real animals together and getting something fantastical but natural looking, so I simply took some of what Wookieepedia had to offer about Akul and tried to correlate it with anything our planet might offer that's both awe-inspiring and ferocious.

Needless to say, it wasn't hard...

All of these are things that accurately describe a tiger.

So the base creature design was always gonna be more tiger-like than anything else. I just needed to find something with impressive teeth to hybridize it with and I'd end up with a cool creature design.

My first thought was to combine it with a shark, because people have a fondness for wearing shark teeth as pendants or other such decorations, and tigers are pretty good swimmers so it would be a great match.

But then I figured why not instead mash-it with a T-rex? The powerful musculature of a modern tiger + the powerful jaws of an ancient beast like the tyrannosaurus, would surely make for a terrifying ambush predator!

The end result was this:

I also did some color variations!

Gotta say, I'm still quite fond of this design. I'm actually a little sad to get a canon Akul design because it means I won't get to draw the one I created anymore... Unless I repurpose it for something else?
