Alright, I gotta type this up because its eating at my brain in a bad way and needs release.
I am not categorically against the concept of generative AI. I don't think there's a way to define art that excludes it while not also excluding stuff that is firmly art. I think that in its current form, it is fundamentally exploitative and causing a lot of harm to workers in very precarious industries. In order for me to actually support it, two major shifts would have to happen.
The models must exclusively be opt-in by the artists*, who can dictate what material can or cannot be used more specifically. (There can be a nuanced discussion on the usage of material by deceased artists and material in the public domain). (In cases of corporate ownership of existing works, I think all artists involved in creating assets should still have to collectively agree for material to be used).
Artists should actually see the benefits of automation, receiving healthcare and UBI seperate from work, so that they are not so beholden to being involved in such mercenary industries and make compromises just to exist.
*I am including all forms of art and artist here, from illustrators to modellers to voice actors and programmers.
I think these would go a massive way to tackling the economic ramifications of the "move fast, break things" attitude these genAI companies have, while avoiding making the copyright and IP systems that currently exist even more nightmarishly awful.
Relatedly, I don't really vibe with discussions of art that seem to fetishize the process of creating it. As someone who does work with a variety of forms of art and mediums, that has never really sat well with me. It feels like a rehashing of the "true art is made from suffering" bullshit, and I don't much care for it! Art for me is a puzzle that I am solving. Figuring out how to accomplish what I want and executing on that is how I interface with it.
(I am aware that a lot of this is pie in the sky type stuff, but its what would be needed for me to be fine with it existing under capitalism. There's a slightly different discussion to be had about outside it).

Man fuck not to get a little real but I'm so mad that when I finally decide I want to post things I make publicly for the first time since I was a teenager I have to deal with this ai bullshit and all these brainless capitalistic platforms. Take me back to when DeviantArt was usable or hell I'll even take twitter a few years back. I'm just fucked unless something changes incredibly quickly.
I don't want to be such a bummer but it's so demoralising lol. Especially when gimmicky blogs with a lot of consistent material and focus are prime candidates for training ai on. Like the year ends and people are left wanting more from X daily dragon blog so they just take the convenient 300ish illustrations on the same topic and use them to churn out weird visual averages between them for More. Guess including text and dedicating to strong daily themes is a good way to evade the kind of consistency ai tries to pick up on so It'll struggle to replicate in a satisfying manner but even still. It's so depressing. I need to see generative ai like this burnt to the ground.

[ Cool, haven't lost any followers yet. Now let's talk about the A.I. stuff.
So, the recent event is that someone was rejected to be RP partners with. And their response was to threaten (or did they succeed?) turning their portrayal into an A.I. so they can write with the A.I. instead or potentially trying to replace them? I'm sorry, but that's sad. You chose a platform that's made to be creative and make friends, and you chose to be a loner and outing yourself as not someone to be associated with. We can talk about how uncool that is, but I'd rather point out how pathetic you are. Whoever you are. Good luck doing that to me though, I just mentioned I had a spreadsheet, no A.I. you can ever make will be able to replicate that so even if you succeed on me it won't be the same experience and thus you already failed.
But I think we should talk about the difference in definition of A.I. because there's TRUE A.I. and what we currently have: A.N.I. (Artificial Non-Intelligence, thank you Arden)
Real A.I. is like a separate entity. It's what we see in movies, and it's what scientist and programmers are trying to accomplish. It might be artificial, but it's a fully functioning brain. Jarvis, Friday, The Epsilon Unit, whatever the hell was in TRON. It's not something that stops all thought when not spoken to, it stays active and formulates/calculates it's own thoughts and opinions. That's rad as hell, and I want to see the day that we can pair A.I. with mentally unhealthy people to regulate decision making because I need 4. I am not smart, and I could DEFINITELY use that kind of help that won't bother a real person at random hours of the day.
A.N.I. is brain dead, you press a button and it turns on like a toaster. It's not where I want A.I. to stop because we all know it's a data scalper. But I do think we should talk about healthy ways to use it. DON'T BOO ME JUST YET, HEAR ME OUT.
Using ANI to come up with an idea when you’re stuck in a writers box? That’s good. Using ANI to write your posts word for word? That’s bad.
Using ANI to generate a music playlist fitting a specific vibe? That’s good. Using ANI to generate actual music? That’s bad.
Using ANI to generate art in a private setting to help expand on ideas or visuals like costume ideas or landscapes (because we can't art good)? That's fine. Sharing that art and trying to sell it as your own? That's bad.
Using ANI to generate scam phone calls that call you from constantly changing numbers? I will kill you. I will actually fucking kill you. I will put myself on a fucking list to hire people to find your ass and I will go to your home and rip out your throat with my fucking teeth. I HAVE CHANGED MY WORK NUMBER 3 TIMES NOW, COMPANY POLICY REQUIRES ME ANSWER EVERY CALL BECAUSE IT MIGHT BE IMPORTANT, FUCK YOURSELF.
Writers burnout happens to all of us, but we shouldn't depend on it to be active. Use it to help you expand, or help you refresh. In a RP setting, we always want the real person. If we wanted a bot, we wouldn't bother being here. I don't want to write with a bot, I want to form a connection with someone on a creative level.
Bottom line is, everything is okay in moderation. Don't think that just because it currently exists means it's the apex of what we can do. We are smarter than that, we are better than that.
If there's something I just said that needs clarification or correction, let's discuss it in a healthy setting. I'm not calling to arms against helping tools, I'm calling to arms against laziness. ]

Really concerned about this stuff about "AI podcasts" that techbros are promoting. There seems to be a digital "podcast" between "Bill Gates" and "Socrates" going around. it seems to be called "AI Talk".
It's supposed to be a "realistic" conversation, generated by algorithms crafted by people trying to represent whatever people like Socrates would tell Bill Gates, or whoever. It seems to be presented as a heuristic education tool, but it seems to me to be more like an entertainment tool, and a pretty mediocre one at that.
I thought a lot about it today and I think it kind of leaves us with a lot to be concerned with. It seems to me like a future filled with AI-generated podcasts or conversations would ultimately be one in which humans are almost hopelessly trapped in a web of illusions created by their own technology. But I think it also lends to some other considerations as well.
By abolishing capitalism you could solve a lot of the immediate problems about displacement and automation, but at the same time you won't necessarily solve the other fundamental social problems they also create. You may no longer have to earn money and compete for work to survive and no longer have to deal with corporations using AI to replace unionizing workers, but you will still have a society submerged in illusory conversations generated by algorithms that slowly obscure the world.
I would stress absolutely you can't handwave this problem by saying "oh well how are you going to stop this without dictatorship?", because we all know that's a canard. It's not true, because no "political" (as in governmental) response can be adequate. This is something that has to be resolved "culturally" in terms of down to the micro-political level. In other words, we have to take it upon ourselves to forge lives without much of these systems, and organise against them, and also destroy them.
You might think that's impossible, but if you do then why would you think degrowth is possible? I say that because in the end degrowth is all I'm really talking about here as applied to certain AI systems. And in this respect, I think anarchists should strive to resist and develop ways of countering the argument from convenience. After all, there are still people who maintain that the state is a source of convenience, and sometimes attack anarchism as a whole by asserting that without the state people will die because they'll lose access to what the state provides. That makes it imperative to oppose appeals to convenience as a fallacy.

So it turns out that ChatGPT not only uses a ton shit of energy, but also a ton shit of water. This is according to a new study by a group of researchers from the University of California Riverside and the University of Texas Arlington, Futurism reports.
Tumblr media
Which sounds INSANE but also makes sense when you think of it. You know what happens to, for example, your computer when it’s doing a LOT of work and processing. You gotta cool those machines.
Tumblr media
And what’s worrying about this is that water shortages are already an issue almost everywhere, and over this summer, and the next summers, will become more and more of a problem with the rising temperatures all over the world. So it’s important to have this in mind and share the info. Big part of how we ended up where we are with the climate crisis is that for a long time politicians KNEW about the science, but the large public didn’t have all the facts. We didn’t have access to it. KNOWING about things and sharing that info can be a real game-changer. Because then we know up to what point we, as individuals, can have effective actions in our daily lives and what we need to be asking our legislators for.
And with all the issues AI can pose, I think this is such an important argument to add to the conversation.
Edit: I previously accidentally typed Colorado instead of California. Thank you to the fellow user who noticed and signaled that!

I think the best AI in the world could not pass The Turing Test, but the most basic probably could. I think defining how good an AI is by how human it can act is an utterly false and egotistical assumption on the part of humanity.

https://www.tumblr.com/bigmammallama5/732632789726478336?source=share do you have any tips on how to detect ai and deepfakes?
Good question and I'm gonna be honest, it's not always easy and it will only get harder and harder. I'm just an artist who has spent their personal time to dive into this topic and study images. I'm still learning and there is a lot I don't know. But let me show what I know. This will be long, but I will make a summary at the end! So far, even with ai having become better and better there are still almost always some things wrong with an image, and they all have a very specific look to them. So let me try to show you some and point out some of them.
As we all know, a biggest struggle ai had were hands. And even though here and there we still see messed up hands, I say "had", because the hands is actual a good example on how ai is improving and will only get better. Still, looking at pictures that show more hands is always worth it, because somewhere in the back there will be most likely at least one messed up hand.
Another issue a lot of ai still has is hair though!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's very obvious still in many ai "drawings" and in those otherwise well rendered portraits. Hair starts to blend with the ears a lot, or with the clothes.
There is also often this very odd look between something too sharp and way too blurry
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is often a very specific texture to the hair. I actually do not know the artistic or specific name for it. I can only describe it as this weird sharp feeling that makes it look oddly pixely, and then you have areas where it's very blurry. And the kind of loops and almost flame like looking hair we see in the last pic out of the three here is also something very common with ai.
As an artist I know we make mistakes too! The way I draw hair is flawed too! But it's not only that it's flawed here, but it's following always the same pattern and falls into the same issues over and over again, no matter who is "creating" the image. Those flame like loops are a common one, next to the odd blends and weird sharp and blurry textures.
But ai is getting better, and we not only have "art" and something that tries to be a drawing/painting, but photos too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lot of those "photos" have a very specific texture and look to them! Again, it's not always the mistakes, but the very specific optic too. A lot of the images are oddly smooth, too rendered, with always blurry backgrounds. And when you look closer at the background you will see the mistakes! The crowd behind Jesus is a hot mess once you look closer. Bob Marley's hair has the same issue than I described before. Lincoln is surrounded by people with messed up hands and don't even get me started on the faces behind Caesar.
So a lot of ai images look alright on a first and quick glance, but as more time you spend with them, as more mistakes you will notice. The wehre is Waldo of ai horror.
And those "photos" shared here are still very obvious. Not just the mistakes and messed up details but the very specific aesthetic too.
Those images get better and better and as less details you have, as less mistakes you have!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With photos like this it becomes harder and harder. There are not many details and no hands. Not many mistakes can be made. Also the very obvious plastic looking smoothness isn't so much here anymore. It kinda still is...but differently. And always the blurry background!! Sometimes the hair is still a giveaway. Collars and clothe straps are also often still a giveaway upon close look. As is jewelry. Earrings will be different and necklaces often don't go all the way around, just end, or blend with the hair or clothes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Often details on jewelry is also blurry and not shown properly. This is a trick with many details. With jewelry, batches, hair, ears, text. So it's often blurred out and not shown properly because ai doesn't know what to really show here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's often really just the small details and when we scroll down quickly we will miss them. Like the wedding ring on the middle finger, the pens on top of a closed pocket, the batches that are always blurry, messed up faces that blend with a blurry background.
And sometimes it's so subtle that I could only really tell that right is the ai image in comparison to the real photo on the left. The real photo shows hands clearly and even when things are blurred out it doesn't feel that it's done to hide things. The ai image on the right hides the hands. There is also a very dead look in the eyes :D
Tumblr media
And here I could only tell because the text in the back doesn't make sense. Even blurred out we should be able to make out something here
Tumblr media
And after seeing a lot of ai images I recognize the kind of blurred out bg in combination with a very smooth and well rendered foreground/characters.
And here the only giveaway is a closer look at the backgrounds as well
Tumblr media
To summarize it:
Ai and fake news rely on a fast living world. We are being bombarded with tons of information and messages daily and we scroll past quickly. But the best tool, for now, in detecting ai is taking our time! Those images get better and better but so far there are still always some things off!! Especially in the background!
Hair. Often weirdly smoothed out and oddly sharp at the same time
Hair often blends with the ears or the clothes
Details are blurred out.
Jewelry doesn't match (example earrings). Details on metal often blurred out and never shown. Necklaces blend with hair or the clothes, and don't go around the neck.
Background is always blurred out.
In this blurred mess there are often hidden very messed up faces and/or hands.
A very specific smooth and yet too sharp/too rendered aesthetic combines with an always blurry bg.
Text, especialyl in the background, is not legible and doesn't make sense.
Backgrounds are often (so far) the dead giveaway. Somewhere in the back things become muddled and messed up. This shows also very well in ai decor/architecture. There will be odd lines that don't align or align too well. Curtain poles that end in the furniture, a plant that is behind a lamp suddenly having leaves in front of the lamp. As longer you look as more you will notice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Conclusion:
Take your time with images! Sit with them! Especially when it's framed as important and political news. Is it ai and propaganda, or did it really happen? Don't fall for the quick buzz and outrage! Some things are obvious right away but with others you have to take your time. And it's time you have! If you are still unsure if a pic is real or not, do some research on top. Image reverse search. Can you find it anywhere else? Are other news outlets sharing it? Does the image/message make sense? For example there is now a deepfake of Bella Hadid voicing support for Israel. Ask yourself, does this make sense? If it feels out of line compared to previous behavior, do some research! Media literacy is not just as being able to recognize a fake or real right away, but being able to do research. To question things! Don't just take every post online for face value. Even when shared by a mutual you trust. They might have been tricked!
There are so many information online and it's great to have access to so information, but it's also difficult to wade through all of it. Media and truth are a weapon and it's being twisted and bend used to manipulate. Always has! But ai and so many people being able to post and share things, it becomes bigger and bigger and more dangerous. So don't just take everything that is handed to you and share it further no questions asked. Media literacy and being able to think for ourselves and do the research is important!! And as research becomes harder and harder, as sources are being messed up with ai and other fake news, it's even more important to sit with the images and study them. See the flaws, the mistakes. Compare it to other news and images.
This got long, and I started to ramble at the end. Sorry But I hope this helped
