Accomplice, Partner, Conspirator...
This comes from a convo I had with someone who claimed that Adachi must have known everything and even watched your movements inside of the TV because he calls you "partner" like Yosuke does, as if he was mocking you for betraying your friends.
This was a big "wat" to me, but it seems the difference comes from this line:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adachi calls you 共犯者, which is commonly translated as accomplice. This is, I assume, where "The Accomplice Ending" gets its name. In the English version of Golden, this was partner.
I think partner works cause English also has sayings like, "partner in crime". But as it was pointed out, Yosuke also calls you partner. Not just in one scene, but through the whole game. So the repetition of a previously used word in the game gives the scene a completely new meaning.
The JP version of the scene doesn't make you think of Yosuke because the word he calls you that gets translated as partner is a completely different word (相棒).
The word does come up in other Persona 4 media:
Tumblr media
In the Golden anime, the bonus episode is called "Thank You Mr. Accomplice", already written in English.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Golden bonuses, the unlocked animation is called the same word (共犯者). But here it's become "Conspirator" in English instead of partner as it was in Adachi's dialogue.

Kurosawa accidentally finding out that Adachi has a praise kink and using it to his advantage.
Constantly complimenting him when he finished something at work by petting his head. Sliding his hand down to gently grip his nape as he lets Adachi know “How good” he’s beings for him.
Feeling pure exhilaration as he leaves Adachi a stuttering mess to go help a coworker.
Getting home late to find Adachi cleaning and calling him a “good boy” before giving his the deepest kiss he can before going to shower.
Sitting on the couch with his legs crossed and calling Adachi random names until he reacts in a certain way.
“Baby? Love? …Princess?”
Feeling like he won the lottery as he chases a visibly affected Adachi back into their room to use the new term in bed to make Adachi as embarrassed as he can because let’s be honest.
The man had a thing for humiliation.

adachi, yay or nay
[Persona 4 spoilers below]
Yay! 🎉
The second he first appeared I pointed at my screen and said “This is the one! This is my favorite character! I’m sure he’ll do nothing wrong in the history of ever!” so you can imagine my increasing devastation as the game progressed 💀 I always have a tendency to fixate on characters that end up being ridiculously antagonistic…and yet I’m shocked each time.
However! If there’s one thing I love to do in my free time it’s over analyze villainous characters and dissect them into bits, because antagonistic characters tend to be the most well written/have the most interesting backgrounds imo (not in all cases obviously, but you get my point). I think Adachi is a very complex character, much more complex then people give him credit for. He’s my favorite antag of the series, and I think the way he was written as a villain and the way he parallels not only Yu, but so many members of the Investigation Team is so fantastic. So while I obviously don’t support his actions or anything because…yikes!…I do appreciate the complexity of his character as a whole.
Also, on a less serious note, I enjoy his silly antics before he’s like. Outed as a murderer lmfao. I think it’s funny that he just walks up to this group of teens and starts spewing information about a sensitive police case and then is like “oh whoops lol maybe I shouldn’t have said that 😓” and nobody questions it at all. They all collectively shrug their shoulders and are like “typical Adachi moment!”
I’ve also stated this before, but the dynamic between Adachi and Dojima is something I really enjoy and I think is often very overlooked! I am once again bringing up the end of the Adachi section of P4AU…and I am once again bawling my eyes out.
So anyways. Adachi is a favorite of mine for sure!

If I may pop in again and send more Adajima, haha, how about "relationships are built on trust, and i trust you"? 👀
The first time they manage to have a drink after Adachi is out of prison is, unsurprisingly, in Okina.
Adachi isn't really sure if he should go back to Inaba. It has been years, of course, but the town still brings back memories... and then there's the fact that he did murder two people in there years ago.
He looks up from his drink, his very first drop of alcohol in years. It couldn't be beer this time, of course. The fruitiest, most colorful cocktail sits in front of him, and he doesn't really remember what it's made of, but it's nice to the palate, and Adachi has drunk enough cheap beer and tapwater for a lifetime.
For now, at least.
Dojima sits in front of him, too, dark grey eyes that were cold as metal back in the day looking at him as if they were melting under an anvil.
Adachi wishes he got it.
The man, now older but still so, so handsome is drinking an alcohol-free beer.
Sober, he wants to be completely sober, Adachi reminds himself. He wants to be sober for Nanako, of course, but also for himself. And this time, also for him.
Alcohol works in funny ways, Adachi knows that. Put enough in your body, and it will make your shame and self-consciousness go away. Put in a little more, and you start saying or doing shit you will later regret. Put in way too much, and it makes you dig your own grave, slowly, deeper and deeper. Until sadness and apathy make it impossible to climb back up.
Dojima's hand is resting near his, almost touching him, and Adachi wants to close the small gap, but he can't.
His smile is small, contrasting with Dojima's one, that feels way too big, way too honest. Adachi has never been too good at dealing with honesty.
"You're really that happy to have me back, huh..."
Dojima snort, as if Adachi had said something really stupid. Adachi just sighs, drinking from the little strap. It tastes of cranberry, orange, and peach. And well, of hungover if he keeps drinking them like they're water.
"I don't really see why not."
Adachi's sigh is louder this time.
"Who's to tell that I won't start killing people again when I get bored?"
"But you won't."
Adachi is not drunk enough for this shit.
"And how do you know that? Are you sure you're not just being delusional?"
He can feel Dojima's forearm twist in anger. For a moment, Adachi wants him to hit him, to show him that nothing has changed, that he is right, that there is no hope, that this was all a mistake.
What Dojima does, instead, is grabbing is hand. It's a weird gesture coming from him and Adachi watches it all happen in slow motion. The way rough lips brush against his knuckles, choosing to cherish, and not to hurt. He just watches him, speechless, until Dojima decides to talk again.
"Relationships are built on trust, and I trust you," is everything that Dojima says. Gentle, honest. More than what Adachi deserves.
Dojima smiles against his skin, knowing he has rendered him speechless. He feels his ears boiling, even more when a thumb brushes against his hand. He is pretty sure that it's not just the alcohol at play.
"Okay... well..."
Dojima's breath tickles his skin as he speaks.
"That's what I thought."

Looking at some screenshots from accomplice vs golden ending (or bad vs good endings, in general) I noticed that in the first case Yosuke is the last element in the group to speak, while in the second case he is the first one (and he really does not have much to say cause he knows they’ll meet in the future):
In bad endings, Yosuke is the last person to speak. He thanks the main character for the help, yet the vibes are just depressing and sad. The fog wasn’t lifted, the real culprit wasn’t caught (or they believe they caught him but it wasn’t the right person. tbh it gets more disturbing in the accomplice ending case, because the main character found the truth, but he decides to hide it from the others and to reject it (by burning the piece of evidence), and, Yosuke’s words will hit harder “You really helped us out with lots of stuff. Thanks, partner.” <- Yosuke always there, making me feel bad every single time i try to reach Adachi - rightfully tbh), no Dojima nor Nanako nor Teddie there at the station. It’s all gloomy, everyone is sad...because of Nanako’s situation, because of their own actions (if they kill Namatame they kinda do the same he did, manipulated by the killer, and in the name of self proclaimed “Justice” <- Nanako’s arcana, which is just revenge and has severe consequences), and/or a feeling of uselessness because the mystery wasn’t solved. No one runs for the train (the mood is really heavy, and the fog also reduces the visibility).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the good endings, Yosuke is actually the first one to talk and... he does not even have much to say. He had previously said that he wouldn’t even saying goodbye, cause Yu/Souji would be probably come visit them soon. The mystery was solved, the sky is clean, Dojima Nanako and Teddie are there too, and even if saying goodbye is hard, they all feel like their bonds are strong and that their friendship is stronger than ever. It’s a sad moment but with happy tones, and they will surely meet again (the same won’t probably happen in the bad endings, because even if not revealed to them, the fog will spread and everyone will become shadows).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yosuke’s expression is kinda similar in both cases, but knowing what has happened in the bad endings gives another meaning to his expression in the bad ones (it also makes me think about the scene where he catches Yu/Souji coming from the TV at Junes, after visiting Adachi, because it begs the question of how much does Yu/Souji trusts the team).
Yu/Souji’s stare is a bit different in both cases, looking more relaxed and calm in the good scenario, although in the bad ending he seems to be staring with some kind of affection (like, appreciation for their friendship and for believing in him, even if, in the accomplice ending he basically fucked everything up).(well, truth be told, they decided to recycle this part for every bad ending, so Yu/Souji will always look like that, being it his belief that Namatame is the killer or his hidden secret about Adachi. And the team looks the same, be it because of the unfortunate circumstances, or because they may feel Yu/Souji might have been hiding something <- which also reminds me how in many game options Yosuke keeps reminding him that he should not be the one carrying all the weight of the investigation and he should trust the team too)The accomplice ending final scene even adds an Adachi roaming aimlessly (or purposely crossing the line when the train Yu/Souji’s in is passing), and it is terrifying, kinda creepy (tbh it felt like he had became a shadow at that point and that he had been able to cross the line without being caught by the train because of that...at least it was what i felt first time watching it).He is waiting for the world as they know to simply end, and even if Yu/Souji decided to burn the piece of evidence, he does not even care about him as a person. On the other hand, completing his social link in a good ending route rewards you with a letter from him (and he calls Izanami bitch in the final final final final battle <3 certified Adachi moment). You can take his words however you want, but it feels like he truly appreciated the times he spent with Dojima, Nanako and Yu/Souji, even if he would still rather see the world burn than try to improve as a person. It does not mean he becomes a better person afterwards, but i guess he understands the concern some people still had for him, which is something he does no feel with Yu/Souji betraying everything he fought for until that moment (also cause going accomplice route is giving up the world, basically). On a final note, I also love how Dojima’s dialogue at the end (before leaving the house) changes depending on which bad ending the player gets, and how his questions are so on point, as if he was acting like some kind of conductor for the player to reflect on their choices.

Send 👏 and I’ll write a description of our muses’ fusion - No Longer Accepting
When the debris clears, a tall man with an intimidating figure emerges from the cloud of dust. Slender with a well-toned muscular build, they embodied the jack of all trades when it came to a fighter - strong, but speedy, adept with any weapon in their grasp, and most intimidating of all, the fact that they were sure of themselves - and incredibly unlikely to break apart.
Two sworn brothers were so close that they couldn't be beaten by challenging their bond, and two of the strongest members of the Yakuza made this fusion more than a challenge to stand up against in a fight.
Dressed in a sharp charcoal gray suit, they immediately take off the jacket with a flourish, throwing it so that it neatly lies on a bicycle rack. Not said a word, not breaking eye contact with their opponent, they begin to unbutton their dress shirt - a deep purple, a strong combination of red and blue, fitting for their bond. Their mouth twitches in a small, smug smile, one eye shining - the other hidden behind a purple eye patch.
Soon, the shirt goes along with their jacket, and the challenger is ready for the fight - no shirt on showed their combined tattoos from both of their counterparts, one with sakura petals and clouds that reached beyond his back to his shoulders, the back containing a large tattoo of a dragon encircling a red oni mask, surrounded by colorful flowers.
No shirt meant that they were not going to hesitate or hold back. Fighting with full power.
The smile returns.
"Let's throw down."

Adachi trying to frame Yukiko
Tumblr media
Early in Persona 4, there are a couple scenes where Adachi tries to frame Yukiko as Mayumi's murderer and raise suspicion about her.
April 17th, after you get caught with weapons at Junes:
Adachi: Well, that announcer, Ms. Yamano, was staying at the Amagi Inn before the first murder. Adachi: Seems Ms. Yamano had some harsh words for the manager about the staff's attitude towards guests. The stress of it caused the manager to collapse. And with Ms. Amagi being the manager's daughter…She must've felt pretty strongly about the incident, y'know. Adachi: By the way, did Ms. Amagi ever hint that she might be leaving the house? Adachi: 'Cause if not, there's been some theories floating around that she's laying low for some reason or another…
After you save Yukiko from the TV:
Adachi: We were just questioning Ms. Amagi, but she says she doesn't remember anything that happened while she was missing. And we can't figure out her whereabouts during the missing period, either. It's like she really disappeared. Adachi: It's all pretty fishy, if you ask me… Like there's something else going on.
On April 30th, when Adachi meets up with the kids at Junes and Yukiko is with the group, he doesn't say anything to her or about her. Seems he's dropped the subject... This all looks very silly after you learn he's the real killer. And so these interactions get written off by players as, "Adachi trying to drop hints about the case so that his little game with Namatame and the Investigation Team can continue".
But what "hint" is he dropping here? What is the point of his accusations? Or, idk, is there a point, besides to move the plot along? "Move the plot along" feels really, really generous. Chie seemed concerned about Yukiko going missing even before Yosuke brings up what Adachi said. The kids would have gone into the TV to try and save Yukiko regardless.
Tumblr media
I'm not really confident about this because it *does* get dropped pretty quickly, and this feels like a bit of a stretch even for me and my walls of tl;dr. But I get the feeling that Adachi is trying to frame Yukiko or make her seem suspicious because he's (at first) concerned she might do exactly what she does in December. This would be pretty bad for him, seeing as how he's trying to get away with murder. And him sending Namatame off to try and kill someone then get blamed instead hadn't produced any results this early.
During December, Yukiko brings to light that Adachi showed up at the ryokan claiming to be Mayumi's police babysitter. Based on what we see, the game suggests that Adachi was lying about being assigned to her. But at the time, the ryokan staff didn't know any better. They took his word for it, and he hung around and chatted with them for a bit.
This makes Yukiko an eyewitness who can place him at the Amagi Ryokan before Mayumi's death, and that's why he's trying to make her seem untrustworthy or discredit her. Like, "What? Me? Mayumi Yamano? Impossible. This girl is crazy. She did it. She had a motive." But he drops it because after Yukiko comes out of the TV, she doesn't say anything that could implicate him. (And he would have an idea cause as he says after you rescue Yukiko from the TV, him and Dojima question her after she turns up.)
Tumblr media
I have seen people call "Yukiko not bringing this up until December" a plot hole. I don't know. After you bring her out of the TV, it's like, "Shadows, blah blah, Personas, talking teddy bear, blah blah, amnesia about kidnapping, TV world induced exhaustion, Kanji's arc starts 5 seconds later". I doubt that "hey Adachi said he was there to guard Mayumi" is on the forefront of her mind.
What really puts this out of "plot hole" territory for me is that even if the kids think Adachi is a moron, they still respect that he's an officer. The power behind the badge is a very, very easy way to explain why Yukiko didn't think twice of him showing up at the ryokan to begin with.
And it's not just that one time, and it's not just her either. Like, Yosuke taking Adachi's accusation of Yukiko seriously is tied to him being a detective working on the case. Would Yosuke feel the same way if it was Kashiwagi saying this? Yosuke and Naoto respect that Adachi is in charge when the kids try to get the protagonist out of the interrogation room, Chie invites Adachi to Marukyu on the stakeout because he's an on duty officer, Kanji didn't think twice about his behavior specifically because he's an officer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Semi-relatedly, I thought it was funny that out all of the Persona 4 characters, Adachi has special interactions with Yukiko in BB Tag. (Edit: Then again, Yukiko does have a special quote when she wins vs Adachi in Ultimax. So hm idklol.) On their partner victory screen, Yukiko says she won't question Adachi for now, but the Investigation Team will stop him if it turns out he's up to no good. And Adachi calls her and her friends naive for trusting him (even if only a little) enough to not be breathing down his neck already. Like, girl, come on, didn't you learn the first time?

"You guys sure ask a lot of questions. I guess I can't complain, gives me something to do."
1.What's something your s/o does that leaves you speechless, or dazed?
-"Every now and then I like to surprise him when I come over. Sometime I find him goofing around his apartment, normally when baking. Typically dancing around, singing along to something, typically in his underwear and apron. I like to watch, it's pretty cute, a lot of things he does are cute. I enjoy my show until notices me, and then gets on to me for scaring him, but maybe he shouldn't have given me a spare key then, hmm?"
---
5. What's something they do that you think is just absolutely adorable?
-"There are times Victor gets really focused, pretty much tuning everything else out. When he does this his nose scrunches up, almost like a bunny. Look closer and you'll see his tongue peeking out. It's adorable. And also incredibly funny. He gets so embarrssed if I catch him like this though. Maybe I have a few pictures of him when he's like this, but don't let him know that, he's make me get rid of them."
---
9. What's a picture that reminds you of your relationship?
Tumblr media
-"There's this old laundromat close to Junes. Even before we got together, we'd find ourselves here most nights, normally just the two of us as not many people stayed out late. He was good company, and you can see what spending time with him led to. Laundry nights kinda became our thing. Though as work piled on I missed him some nights. The nights we could be both be there felt special occasions after that.
The place had bad heating, the lights always flickered, and there was this one dryer they never even bothered to fix, but that little laundromat means something important to both of us."

Sorry not sorry sdkfjaophvd;fuo. Actually, my first thought was that Namatame WAS going to stop kidnapping ppl, since he did so because he thought he was keeping them safe. Even in the bad end, I think he did kinda realize that the TV wasn't good?? I might be wrong on that one though. It also has the effect of throwing a wrench in Adachi's plans. It might be a while before I write a fic, but I'm glad I have someone else to brainrot with!
Glad to join you in brainrot my friend ヽ(~_~(・_・ )ゝ
Hmm... tbh I also forgot exactly what Namatame's opinions on the TV world are post heaven- I was thinking that he only really gets a hint once the IT talk to him the next day? But Namatame not kidnapping people could be very interesting, since both Yu and Adachi both have reasons to want people to get kidnapped (Yu to get his team back together, Adachi for, well, murder)
I suppose that would pose the question: would Adachi take matters into his own hands to keep the game going? Would Yu take matters into his own hands by being like "Uh hey guys that I just met, haha, did you want to follow me into the TV orrr....?"
It also poses the question of what Namatame would end up doing instead...
I'm melting with the possibilities. I love this
