I can't remember the context of Adachi saying daddy but isn't that also what you call your father in law? I thought maybe Adachi is indirectly teasing Dojima about Nanako or maybe Narukami (that they are close to Adachi?)
I was joking around about ~daddy~... or was I?
The scene is Dojima introducing Adachi, Adachi saying Dojima has been bossing him around since spring, then Dojima threatens Adachi suggesting that he's been holding back on how hard he's been bossing Adachi around / he can still boss him around more, then Adachi responds by saying this line where he playfully says "dohoho, again with these jokes, dad". To me, it's about his tone of voice / how he says it -- it has the same vibes as little old ladies talking to their husbands, as "dad" is something a wife calls her husband too.
Iirc wives start doing this after they have kids / when the kids are around because the kids should/would call the husband "dad", and in this scene, Nanako (who would call Dojima "dad") is there. Of course, Adachi is not a replacement for Chisato, he's just fucking around, but he feels comfortable to do so around Dojima and when Nanako is present (this is his first time meeting her too). Again, I think it's really about his voice on this line. In the tags on that original post, I put that it reminds me of little old ladies saying, "look, dad, it's Mt Fuji!" to their husbands because omg that's what his voice delivery reminds me of lol.
Here is the actual clip:
If you Google something like... hum... "夫をお父さんと呼ぶ" you will find threads of people talking about calling their husbands "dad", but only after the kids are born. (And of course, some couples don't do this.)
It's not so much "He says daddy"; I'm just fucking around lmao. But more, "Adachi seems to be talking as though he's Dojima's wife".

I come back to this line because I was recently reminded of the English version, and the idea that, "there was no proof of Dojima and Adachi being close buds before the scene after Magatsu Inaba where Dojima sends the ambulance".
I first played Persona 4 undubbed, and I distinctly remember hearing this in Japanese, and Adachi's delivery on this line helped frame the level of rapport between Adachi and Dojima for the rest of the game in my eyes. Adachi and Dojima must be somewhat close at this point (early in the game -- April) if Adachi feels comfortable enough to know he can joke around about being Dojima's wife without any backlash from Dojima.
The English version seems so different in comparison, idk. I don't know what scenes made that person feel that way, but small things like this probably add up over a 90 hour game.
Look, I'm not saying that Adachi calls Dojima "daddy", and I'm not saying that Adachi is acting like Dojima's wife, but
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wow I can't believe the English version removed Adachi calling Dojima [daddy / husband].

Fandom wiki is a dumpster fire. I've seen many wikis where the admins refuse to accept good fixes and keep wrong info in their wiki. Only time I was able to overcome it was by becoming an admin myself... but that's a little extreme and not possible on popular wikis.
Unfortunately, yeah. Admins and other people in charge in general can be a big roadblock on these kinds of group projects. Apparently the Great Mara dude on the Fandom Wiki has a reputation of being a stubborn asshole too.
I've been contributing to the indie MegaTen wiki during multi-hour work meetings because writing Adachi a page from scratch seemed easier than trying to edit the Fandom Wiki entry while dealing with an overbearing Admin who apparently watches the page???, but the indie wiki still has a long way to go. (And when you see people who talk about the indie wiki, it's usually paired with complaints about there not being info... Lmao. How is anything ever gonna get added if hardly anyone contributes? Yeesh.)

Here is a completely random example to show how absolutely fucking weird the Fandom wiki is.
Made Up Shit Is Okay...
Tumblr media
Adachi's Fandom Wiki entry includes a bit about the reference to him on the cop drama on TV, but it also says that the detective in the drama is named "Sakyo Hinoshita".
I have no idea where this name comes from. If you google "Sakyo Hinoshita", you get 3 results, 1 of which is Adachi's Fandom Wiki page:
Tumblr media
One of which is Morgana's page, where the name also comes up, but this time with sources:
Tumblr media
However, if you look at the sources, one is a Japanese artbook that mentions Morgana likes the cop drama, but neither of them mention a "Sakyo Hinoshita".
Tumblr media
(Arrow part just says "Likes cop dramas".)
Trying to Google "Sakyo Hinoshita" (I tried 照下土竜佐京 [Hinoshita Sakyou] and a few others) + ペルソナ (Persona) also yields nothing.
As far as I'm concerned, this is completely made up, but it is on the current version of Adachi's Fandom Wiki entry.
...But Factual Shit is NOT Okay
If you look at Adachi's infobox profile on his Fandom Wiki entry, it says the following for his name:
Tumblr media
透 or とおる being romanized as "Touru" is based on what, exactly?
In the English game, it's written Tohru. On some Japanese products, they remove the double vowel and just write Toru.
What romanization style is "Touru" even supposed to be? In hepburn, it would be Tōru. In both nihonshiki and kunreishiki, it would be Tôru. For word processing (e.g. when entering on a keyboard), it would be Tooru. I don't know shit about "spoken language-style" (JSL), but I believe it would be Tooru there too.
Now, this might seem like a simple mistake that one should be able to fix, right? Okay, well, no; the history page tells a different story.
Tumblr media
People have tried to fix this and it gets reverted.
...and the user who is reverting it IS A FUCKING ADMIN LMAO.
And really, this is just one small example of "Made Up Shit Ok, Factual Shit Bad". I just do not know what you're supposed to think here lol.

Yandere Takaya
Tumblr media
During the 2nd fight vs Takaya in Persona 3 Reload, he asks Makoto what he sees right now.
If Makoto answers "Friends" or "Future", Takaya gets pissed, uses Super Spirit Drain (drains 999 SP), Mamudoons the whole party ("fuck your friends"), and continues targeting Makoto's weakness for the rest of the fight.
But if Makoto answers "Just you bby" "You", then Takaya will still Super Spirit Drain, but he'll only cast Mudoon on Makoto and won't try targeting his weaknesses for the rest of the fight.
I'm picturing that if Persona 4 gets remade and adds in something similar for Adachi, he would have the complete opposite reactions lol. Adachi expects you and your friends to come kill him! He wants you to answer friends or future! He'd be so pissed if Yu said he just sees him. Adachi is not beating the tsundere allegations.

The Persona 5 Maniacus mentions that Hifumi was a party member until around halfway through development and also specifically names two elements of Draft!Hifumi's character that are still in the game but went to other characters.
Holding a Japanese worldview: Went to Yusuke
Growing up a prisoner to adult values: Went to Makoto and Haru
Wild. That feels like such an integral part of Makoto and Haru's characters; would not have guessed it was ported over from another character.
I hate purse owners fans users who bring up the hifumi used to be a phantom thieve because they always never really care about her character
Like her social link is lovely and I think ties in with the overall theme of p5 very well
Just because something was like in the first draft doesn't make it Is inherently better
( also people tended to use it to hate Makoto more then like... actually caring about hifumi's character)
I've noticed that too. It really is never actually about Hifumi's character or even about speculating how the draft character's role as a dedicated unconventional playmaker might have changed how the Phantom Thieves operates. As you say, it really does come off as an excuse to just dunk on Makoto. I like how the character came out in game and how she represents the Star arcana. Why is there this "the grass is always greener on the other side" vibe when we talk about this hypothetical draft character who shares her same look?
I actually romanced Hifumi on my playthrough of vanilla P5 and my thought process was like, "Well, she isn't a fellow classmate and she's not a Phantom Thief; that seems like a good romantic outlet for the MC". So hearing that she was "originally a Phantom Thief" was like "huh" to me until I actually read what was written and not how people interpreted it. 🤦‍♀️
Silver lining, I guess, is that it seems more common knowledge that the Hifumi thing was a misinterpretation. (Whereas I feel like I see the Dojima thing entirely too often lol.)

mini rant, but i think it is a bit, "you didn't understand this character" when people talk about, "chie is awesome because she's a tomboy".
like i'm fairly sure her character arc from p4 -> p4g -> p4a -> p4au -> golden epilogue is that, "just because you like martial arts doesn't mean you can't wear a cute dress".
which, really, gives off the opposite vibes of "tomboy".
edit: also, im not sure how well known this is in english, but in japanese, chie always (always!) uses an extremely feminine personal pronoun, あたし, so i think you are supposed to feel a "gap" between her "tomboy" look and how she speaks.

To beat a dead horse, I was reading another interview today, and found another thing Wada said related to "women playing fighting games" that might have been confused / telephoned over the years:
Tumblr media
There's an old interview for arena (so not Ultimax) where Wada mentions that women, and other people who don't usually come to on-site play tests, came to test P4 Arena's on-site play tests. Some had never played a fighting game before, thought that the demo footage was them playing (I'm not entirely surely what he meant by this - perhaps it's referring to the game footage that plays on the "insert coin" screen?), didn't know how to block, etc.
Since this was for Arena, I think you can safely conclude that Atlus and Arcsys already knew that women were interested (e.g. because it's Persona) in playing the fighting games. It's not that they "Added Adachi to attract women", it's probably more like... They knew from Arena that women who were inexperienced at fighting games were going to play Ultimax too, so they made Adachi easy to play with them in mind.
Btw, even tho this was for Arena, Wada does mention Adachi in the interview:
Tumblr media
4gamer asks for character who fans requested, and Wada responds they got a lot of requests for Shinji from P3. For P4, he was surprised by the staggering amount of requests they got for Adachi lol. Margaret and Liz were also requested.
Old Famitsu journal about P4U2:
Tumblr media
Famitsu asks about Adachi being included in P4U2. Wada replies that people have been asking for him after P4U. Atlus themselves also wanted to include him, but since he got arrested, they weren't really sure about how to do that. (The answer is Plot Magic, Wada. Come on.) On 2nd thought, I think he meant more like, "Was it really necessary to add Adachi?" (Yes, yes it was, duh.) Iguchiya mentions that Arcsys has a lot of Adachi fangirls on staff. He also asks that you pay attention to his animations cause the staff put in work to creating Adachi-like movements lol.
(koda's corner: In the Design Works, one of the guys who works on the character graphics and motion, Yuki Sugiyama, talks about making Adachi like... lame, but not like... completely lame, and how movements they tried to come up with for him got rejected for "being too cool for Adachi". I would really like to imagine in my head that he had to present these animations to some, idk, Council of Adachi Fangirls at Arcsys who were like, "rejected, Adachi is more lame than this" at him the entire time.)

Mayo Cabbage Bread
In the audio drama that came with DVD/BD volume 3 of the anime, Yu catches Adachi slacking off at Junes. Adachi says he is eating "mayo cabbage bread" and drinking cabbage juice. I got curious... if like... mayo cabbage bread (マヨキャベツパン) was like... Actually a thing cause I've never seen that on a convenience store shelf...
And uhm... The Google image search results look grim...

Full translation of Hashino's Persona Club P4 interview.
I commissioned Shmuplations to do parts 3 and 4, as I thought those were most spicy, and he ended up doing all of it since his Patreon also asks for Persona content. Thanks to him for all of his work!
This is the "Yukiko and Yosuke were the culprits before Adachi" interview (jk this is half-true half-misleading clickbait lol).

omg, bless the internet archive.
Tumblr media
(Previous answer was about Rise.)
Interviewer (Famitsu): So she (Rise) has a style that's fitting of her lively personality. How about Adachi, who was also added from Persona 4? Seiji Fukumoto (ArcSys side, producer): Adachi has a lot of female fans, so we made him as easy to use as possible. He himself isn't very strong, but his Persona is extremely powerful. (Like Rise), he too has a style that suits him.
I guess I can see how this got turned into "we added Adachi to get women to play a fighting game" thru 10 years of internet telephone?
Or I'm totally off base here and there is actually an interview where someone said that.

For the anon who asked about a rumor about, "Adachi being added to P4U2 to get women to play a fighting game": I think I know where this comes from - it was the question before or after on this Famitsu journal about U2. This is from memory because Famitsu killed that site last week (what timing), but I'm fairly confident that what ArcSys said was something more sexist. Along the lines of, "We made his gameplay simplistic because he's popular with women".
The simplistic gameplay they're referring to is likely how magatsu izanagi does 9 billion damage with his spear on a normal attack, and how Adachi's unique character mechanic is just, "he buffs himself". Jokes on them - I'm ass at fighting games no matter what character I'm playing.
Because the year is 2024, what I'm going to take out of a statement like, "he's so easy that even women can do it", is that, "ArcSys confirmed Adachi likes to get pegged".

If you have a way of getting fragrances from Japan (it has alcohol and can't be sent via airmail), then Adachi's fragrance is currently available for pre-order.
It's a nice citrus-y smell that smells absolutely nothing like what you think Adachi would smell like lol.
(P4 protag's fragrance, meanwhile, smells like the most Generic Man Possible, and I mean that in a completely derogatory way.)

More "Well Ahkstually, Adachi's Arcana is The Fool":
Tumblr media
This time from Dengeki's Arena Ultimax book.
Tumblr media
In the P4U2 Design Works, Adachi's Arcana is shown as the Jester card and the JP term that Jester was translated from (道化師, dokeshi), but the English text next to it provided by Japanese Atlus is The Fool. On glance, this might seem like a typo, especially since we're used to it being "Jester", but hmm is it? Fool seems like a valid translation of 道化師 to me. Adachi's 0 card even has some elements (the little clown top and hat) from the Tarot de Marseille Fool, which is the deck where Persona's tarot numbering comes from.

The Adachi Ending
I received a galaxy brain revelation about the so-called accomplice ending when I was at the Persona 25th Anniversary exhibit. There were glass cases for each Persona game that showed storyboards and scripts. The one selected for Persona 4 - the only one on display - was a piece of paper with no dialogue and a storyboard of a familiar man with bedhead crossing by some railroad tracks...
Yup, Atlus picked the script and storyboard for the accomplice ending to represent Persona 4. As I read the stage actions, I realized that Atlus themselves didn't call this the accomplice ending. It was labeled the "Adachi Ending" like this is some dating game. Insane. Incredible. This is going to bother me until my next hyperfixation.
