the people who make fun of aplatonics don't actually know what being aplatonic is, or what it means to be aplatonic
#no you fucking idiot it doesn't mean you're friendless jfc#at least not in the way you're thinking#most self-id'ing aplatonics are those of us who have non-desire to form new friendships due to trauma survival#we might form bonds with people online and consider them friends and we might have one to a few in-person/local friends we've retained#or who we're 'friendly' with as associates or acquaintances#some of us id this way because we've accepted and embraced that *because* trying to force ourselves to initiate the formation of friendship#is so traumatizing and/or retraumatizing we put our trauma-related recovery and/or neurodivergent boundaries first#i accepted a long time ago that the only reason i wanted to make new friends is because i had no robust in-person support network#other than literally my brother who is not able to support me the way a friend of no familial relation might#do you get what i'm saying?#i have friends and acquaintances#on occasion i end up meeting people that gradually become closer to me and who i eventually consider friends#but my desire to go out and form friendships with people actively is gone#i realized a long time ago that i didn't actually need to form new friendships nor did i want to - for the sake of being friends w/ people#when i meet someone and we hit it off i don't think 'i want to be their friend'. i used to think i did. but that wasn't it.#and the obsession people have with calling this unhealthy is just frustrating to me#you know what's more unhealthy? putting myself through the same damn friend-seeking routine i was forced to do for ABA therapy growing up#it's retraumatizing it doesn't align with what my needs are#as long as my needs are met and i don't feel distressed why should it fucking matter to anyone?

“ABA therapy is fundamentally ableist and harmful/abusive”
and
“ABA therapy is often the only type of ‘help’ for autistic people that insurance will approve”
and
“People who genuinely want to help autistics can be easily persuaded that ABA therapy is necessary and useful because they don’t have the right context”
and
“ABA therapy specifically touts itself as scientifically based and approved, and it can do this because there are actual scientific journals saying this”
and
“Those scientific journals are written by neurotypical people who are investigating reduction of visual symptoms instead of reduction in stress”
and
“ABA has some aspects that are generally considered good, such as helping kids communicate, and this helps it mask the screwed-up and abusive sides of the therapy”
and
“Some institutions will say they offer ABA therapy and then actually offer a completely different type of treatment”
and
“The ABA therapy offered in schools is usually even crappier than average because it’s focused on making kids quiet, not healthy”
and gosh I’m so fricking tired

I am now at a level of obsession with Disco Elysium where I am watching at least a little bit of every playthrough I come across. Last time this happened was with Undertale almost a decade ago. With UT this helped me get a very thorough handle on the way the game was designed and with the subtler bits of player manipulation. DE is not subtle about anything and so instead I'm getting insights into the people playing it, particularly as it spreads beyond the youtube leftist bubble.
The one I'm having the most fun with right now is by this guy named Brady, who is a therapist specializing in addiction. The fun part is not so much his insight into Harry as an addict - again, the game is not subtle - but his absolute discomfort with politics. He refuses to engage with any of the ideological choices, and that makes the game a bit of a bumpy ride for him. It's particularly striking because he's willing to read into everything else that goes on in Harry's brain - he breaks out his Johari windows and his CBT flowcharts and pins the butterfly right to the corkboard - but he shuts down when the game asks him to pick a side.
To extrapolate wildly from one dude's hangups, I think this is just part of the deal with therapy. The aim of a therapist is to make the subject more functional (particularly these days, when if you're lucky insurance will pay for ten sessions, and you better document exactly what worksheets you made your patients fill out) - and being functional means being able to be happy and productive in the society you're currently living in. If I go to a therapist and say I'm bummed out about all the murdering my government is doing they will suggest I stop watching the news, or, if I'm lucky, they'll try to help me figure out why I feel guilt about things I can't control. Delving into the whys and hows of said murdering is actively counterproductive.
This is not to say that therapy is inherently bad, or, like, counterrevolutionary, because making you a more functional person does help with a lot of things, including your ability to help others. It's just a useful thing to keep in mind when therapy and politics bump into each other. I read this paper when I was googling ABA for podcast reasons and it stuck with me. The thesis boils down to: because the world is imperfect and people need skills to live in it we should continue to torture children, and we don't have enough research to conclude that torture could be traumatic. This is on one level reasonable and on one level insane. It depends where you stand, and whether you think "ability to express affection towards parents" is worth that kind of intervention. But the authors wouldn't construe this as a political argument.
Anyway: with all this in mind, I very much recommend reading "The Saint of Bright Doors", which we will be covering on wizards vs lesbians soon.

"New (old) perspectives on self-injurious and aggressive biting" published in Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis / Nine Inch Nails- The Hand that Feeds
I was troubled to see a trend of claiming that Autistic people who do not support Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) are a group of "low-support-needs" autistics who are monopolizing the conversation and taking resources away from autistics with higher support needs—I think it is misunderstanding.
Individual positive or negative experiences with ABA are irrelevant here—the fundamental core of the therapy is behaviorism, the idea that an autistic person can be "treated" by rewarding "desirable" behaviors and punishing "undesirable" behaviors, and that an increase in desirable behaviors and decrease in undesirable behaviors constitutes successful treatment
In researching I found that ABA practitioners have published statements condemning conversion therapy. They refer to an unfortunate historical association between ABA and conversion therapy, but it is not association—ABA literally is conversion therapy; the creator of it used it to try to "cure" little boys that were too feminine.
ABA is considered "medically necessary" treatment for autism and the only "proven" treatment, in that it is proven to create decrease in "undesirable" behaviors and increase in "desirable" behaviors.
Undesirable behaviors for an autistic person might include things like stimming and talking about their interests, desirable behaviors might include eye contact, using verbal speech, playing with toys in the "right" way.
The BCBA behavior analyst code of ethics does not prohibit "aversive" methods (e.g. electric shock) to punish undesirable behaviors
The code of ethics only discusses the consent of the "client," not the person receiving the treatment
Many people will say "my child's ABA therapist would never make them repress harmless stims, give up their interests, use electric shocks...They understand the value of neurodiversity and emphasize the consent of the child..."
But consider...if nothing binds or requires an ABA therapist to treat stimming as important, nor restrains them from using abusive techniques, nor requires them to consider the consent of a person being treated, what protects vulnerable people other than luck? The ABA therapist still has an innately unethical level of power over a child being "treated."
Furthermore, consider: can a therapy built on the goal of controlling the behavior of a person who cannot meaningfully consent to it, especially without hard limits or protections on the kinds of behavior that can be coerced or controlled, ever be ethical?
I found many articles that discuss teaching "compliance" in autistic children, treating "compliance" as a reasonable goal to strive for without qualification...
The abstract of the above article struck me with a spark of inspiration. Biting is an undesirable behavior to be controlled, understandably so, since most would feel that violence should not be allowed. But I was suddenly reminded of the song "The Hand that Feeds" by Nine Inch Nails, which is a play on the saying "Don't bite the hand that feeds you," meaning don't lash out against someone that is kind to you.
But doesn't "the hand that feeds you" implicitly have power over you through being able to give or withhold food? In this case, kindness can be a form of coercion. Thus "biting the hand that feeds" is used in the song as a metaphor for autonomy and resisting coercive power. The speaker asks the audience if they have the courage to test the benevolence of their oppressors, or if they will remain compliant and unquestioning even though they know deep down that it isn't right.
Likewise the article blunders into something unintentionally poetic when it recognizes that biting is an innately possible behavior in response to "aversive" stimuli or the "removal of reinforcers." Reinforcers and aversives in ABA are discussed as tools used by the therapist—the presentation of a preferred food would be a reinforcer, for instance (and is often used as such in ABA).
The journal article considers biting as a behavioral problem, even though the possibility that someone may bite can never be eliminated. Contrastingly, "The Hand that Feeds" highlights the coercive power behind the ability to control your behavior, even when that control appears benevolent and positive, and argues that "biting the hand that feeds you" is not only a possibility but a moral imperative.
Consider: In what circumstances would you bite someone? To defend your own body? To defend your life? Are there circumstances in which biting would be the reasonable and the right action to take?
What authority decides which behaviors are desirable or undesirable, and rewards or punishes compliance or resistance? Who is an authority—your therapist? Your teacher? Your caregiver? Any adult? Any person with the power to reward or punish?
In what circumstances might compliance be demanded of you? In what circumstances would it be justifiable not to comply? What authority decides which circumstances are justifiable?
Can you imagine a circumstance where it might be important for a child to not comply with the demands of an adult? For a citizen to not comply with the demands of a government? Which authorities demand compliance in a right and just manner, and which demand compliance to things that are evil and wrong? Which authority has the power to differentiate the two? Should you trust them? Will you bite the hand that feeds you?/Will you stay down on your knees?

Did Sia insult topic of autism somehow?
Oh honey, it's sooooooooo much worse than that.
Sia wanted to make a movie about an autistic girl that manages to connect to people/feel safe and confident through music. So far, nothing outrageous, just a simple concept that would obviously put Sia's music front and center while doing something nice and educating people on autism.
There was controversy about her not casting an autistic actress as it would have been nice representation, but she could have totally gotten away with that since, come on, hollywood hasn't even figured out Rain Man isn't exactly true to life, they're not ready to have an autistic person playing an autistic character. Baby steps.
The real problem started when Sia started promoting the "charity/support group" that was helping "educate" her on the topic to make the movie. The "charity" in question was Autism Speaks - which is absolutely HATED by the autistic community for things like:
1 - Spreading the myth that autism is a mental illness that one can develop/catch like the freaking flue and potentially be cured of, instead of a neurotype, aka something starts in the woomb and cannot be "cured" because to do that you'd need to replace someone's entire nervous system, which is impossible.
2 - Using that myth to get outrageous amounts of money from people so they "search for a cure" - that doesn't exist and will never exist because curing autism is biologically impossible, AND despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of autistic people don't even want to be "cured" (plus, since said "cure" would essentially mean giving the person a new brain, it leads to the question of "Would I even be the same person, or would that just kill and replace me?")
3 - Using the myth of "We don't know what causes autism" (we do, it's genetic) to, of course, get MORE money from people so they can "do research to find the missing puzzle piece" (if you ever see autistic people complaining about a puzzle piece being used to represent the condition, that's why, it was started by Autism Speak's massive disinformation campains).
4 - Falsely "confirming" things like soy milk cause autism with one of the world's most ridiculous "research", losing only to "vaccines totally make kids autistic, buy MY vaccine instead, guys, I am totally not an unbelievably biased person, it's ALL the other doctors/scientists lying to you. GIVE ME MONEY!"
5 - Pushing the narrative of "autism is inherently a tragedy" to distract from the fact that all the money they waste on stupid shit could be used to help autistic people and their families. Instead, they focus on creating more and more panic, making parents in particular despair even more - to the point that one of their "awareness videos" includes a mother talking about how she wants to murder her autistic daughter and then kill herself... while sitting right next to said daughter.
6 - Promoting ABA "therapy" - which was created by the same guy responsible for the attrocity that is gay conversion "therapy." Both have led to unbelievably high rates of confirmed PTSD and suicidal ideation in patients (victims), and ABA in particular has been compared to literal dog training. Very fitting since it was created by a guy who famously did not believe autistic people truly counted as thinking, feeling human beings, and said as much several times. Despite that, it is still praised by some utter bastards because "it makes the patients act less autistic when they're not crying in the corner or trying to jump out a window"
So yeah, working with these guys is a genuinely horrible thing to do since they're basically a scam/hate group pretending to be a charity - and people were STILL willing to give Sia the benefit of the doubt, since Autism Speak uses all their resources to make sure they're the first thing people see when looking up how to help autistic people.
Lots of Sia's fans, both autistic and allistic, warned her repeatedly, politely, that she needed to supporting them IMMEDIATELY as their goal was the exact opposite of the one she claimed to have - aka raise awareness through an accurate portrail of autism. People were even kind enough to name organizations like ASAN as replacements to help her fix any damage done to the project.
And instead of being a decent human being, Sia decided to cry on twitter about how the mean retar-I mean, autistics were bullying her even when she was so kindly using them for her vanity project.
Because yes, that's how the movie turned out. An unwatcheable piece of garbage, with the autistic "character" being so fucking bad even the people who actively use "autistic" as insulted being offended on our behalf - and of course, she was used just a prop to show how awesome Sia's character was.
Seriously, it was so bad the actress playing the autistic girl was sobbing in between scenes because she knew how it was horrible and she didn't want to insult anyone, but Sia is literally her godmother and helped her career by putting her in nearly all her music videos so she felt obligated to go along with it.
So yeah, fuck Sia and fuck Autism Speaks.

ABA Therapy Success Rate: What You Need to Know
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy has gained recognition as an effective intervention for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and various behavioral challenges. This evidence-based approach offers promising results, but its success is contingent on several crucial factors. In this article, we delve into the key elements contributing to the efficacy of ABA therapy and shed light on the factors influencing its success rate.
Early Intervention: The Foundation of Success
Early intervention is a cornerstone of success in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, particularly when addressing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other behavioral challenges. Research consistently underscores the significance of initiating ABA therapy at a young age, and this early start can lay the foundation for improved communication, social skills, and behavior management. This section explores why early intervention is crucial in ABA therapy and how it contributes to positive outcomes.
1. The Critical Window of Development
Early childhood is a period of rapid brain development and learning. During this time, children are more receptive to new information and are forming the building blocks of communication, social interaction, and self-regulation. For individuals with ASD or behavioral issues, intervening during this critical window can be transformative.
2. Maximizing Neuroplasticity
Neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to reorganize itself and form new neural connections, is at its peak during early childhood. ABA therapy leverages this Neuroplasticity by introducing targeted interventions that help shape desired behaviors and skills. As the brain becomes more adaptable in early childhood, it becomes easier to establish positive behavior patterns.
2. Tailored Treatment Plans: Personalization Matters
One of the hallmarks of practical Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is the creation of individualized and tailored treatment plans. In the world of ABA, one size does not fit all, and personalization is critical to achieving successful outcomes.
1. Recognizing Unique Needs
Everyone, whether on the autism spectrum or dealing with other behavioral challenges, is unique. Their strengths, weaknesses, preferences, and challenges differ significantly. ABA therapy recognizes this diversity and emphasizes acknowledging and understanding an individual's needs.
2. Comprehensive Assessment
Creating a personalized ABA treatment plan begins with a comprehensive assessment. Behavior analysts or therapists conduct thorough evaluations to identify an individual's current skill level, communication abilities, behavior patterns, and any specific challenges they face. This assessment serves as the foundation for tailoring the therapy.
In ABA therapy, personalization is not merely a feature but the linchpin of success by recognizing and addressing an individual's unique needs, personalizing goals and strategies, and involving families and caregivers.
3. Qualified and Trained Therapists: Expertise is Paramount
The success of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy hinges on the competence of the therapists or behavior analysts delivering the intervention. The significance of having qualified and well-trained professionals cannot be overstated. In this section, we explore why therapists' expertise is paramount in ABA therapy and how it contributes to the effectiveness of the treatment.
3.1. The Science of ABA Requires Expertise
ABA therapy is grounded in behavior analysis principles, a well-established scientific field. Therapists must deeply understand these principles to design and implement effective interventions. This expertise ensures that therapy is evidence-based and aligns with the latest research findings.
3.2. Board-Certification: A Gold Standard
Board certification is a critical credential for ABA therapists. It signifies that a therapist has met rigorous educational and training requirements and has demonstrated proficiency in delivering ABA therapy. Therapists with board certification thoroughly understand the principles and ethical guidelines governing the field.
4. Consistency and Intensity: The Recipe for Progress
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is a highly effective intervention for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other behavioral challenges. Two critical ingredients that contribute significantly to the success of ABA therapy are consistency and intensity. This section explores why these elements are pivotal and how they combine to form the recipe for progress in ABA therapy.
4.1. Consistency: The Key to Behavior Change
Consistency refers to the regularity and predictability of ABA therapy sessions and the application of ABA strategies across different environments and contexts. Here's why consistency is paramount:
Reinforcement: Consistency ensures that support for desired behaviors is delivered predictably. When individuals experience a consistent connection between their actions and positive outcomes, they are more motivated to engage in those behaviors.
Generalization: Consistent application of ABA strategies across settings (e.g., home, school, community) promotes conception. It helps individuals transfer the skills they learn in therapy to real-life situations.
Reduction of Problematic Behaviors: Consistency is crucial for addressing problematic behaviors. When interventions are consistently applied to reduce or replace negative behaviors, individuals are more likely to show progress.
Skill Acquisition: Consistent practice and repetition are essential for skill acquisition. Consistency ensures that individuals have ample opportunities to practice and master new skills.
5. Data-Driven Decisions: The Power of Analysis
In Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, data-driven decisions are a linchpin of success. ABA therapists meticulously collect, analyze, and interpret data to guide their interventions and tailor treatment plans. In this section, we delve into why data-driven decisions are integral to ABA therapy and how they harness the power of analysis for positive outcomes.
5.1. ABA Therapy's Scientific Foundation
ABA therapy is firmly rooted in the principles of behavior analysis, a well-established scientific field. At its core, behavior analysis relies on empirical observation and data collection to understand and modify behavior. Applying these principles in ABA therapy necessitates a rigorous commitment to data-driven practices.
5.2. Identifying Patterns and Trends
Data collection in ABA therapy involves systematically recording behaviors, responses to interventions, and environmental variables. The accumulation of this data over time allows therapists to identify patterns and trends in an individual's behavior. These patterns provide critical insights into the effectiveness of interventions and the triggers or consequences that drive behaviors.
Conclusion
ABA therapy offers a promising path toward improving the lives of individuals with ASD and behavioral challenges. Many factors influence its success rate, from early intervention and tailored treatment plans to qualified therapists and data-driven decisions. By emphasizing personalization, consistency, and collaboration, ABA therapy can pave the way for remarkable progress and a brighter future for those it serves.

"Good Evening, 47, and welcome to New York City. Your target is Autism Speaks... the entire organization. I am sure you are well familiar with their long and sore did history, but to summarize, they are an organization dedicated to "curing" Autism, by any means necessary. Despite their shining public reputation and non-profit status, Autism Speaks can best be described as an ableist hate group. Notably, they have been known to give coverage almost exclusively to parents who have admitted to wanting to kill their children for having Autism. They are infamous for pushing the 'Vaccines causes Autism' myth and believing in it wholeheartedly, regardless of how much damage or death this idea causes. Bob Wright, founder of Autism Speaks, has continued to insist that there is no clear evidence against Vaccines causing Autism for years and the organization is well known for lobbying support for ABA and other abusive 'behavioral therapy' programs. These programs are focused solely on abusing, berating, and beating neurodivegent behaviors out their patients to make them appear and act more normal, resulting in incalculable trauma and sometimes, even preventable deaths. The damage that this supposed charity has done to the Autism Community is incalculable and our numerous clients want to ensure that they are silenced. Permanently. I somehow doubt that you're the 'solution to the puzzle' that this organization was looking for, 47, but I think you'll fill the role just fine. I'll leave you to prepare."

MEET YOUR CONTESTANTS!
TW: Kidnapping + ableism
Your Turn to Die spoilers under the cut!
Tumblr media
Name: Gin Ibushi
Age: 12
Gender + Pronouns: Boy, he/him
Video Game: Your Turn to Die
Backstory: “During almost his entire life has been monitored to take part in a death game, and after being put in it has been very useful. More useful than some adult characters even. He also is canonically autistic, which I think is really cool”
• “Spoilers for the game! So Gin, along with everyone else was kidnapped to be a part of the death game. He was monitored by them too (he is also canonly autistic!). Gin is one of three characters who's still alive no matter what choice you make, and the only kid who you can't kill without getting a game over.”
• “Autistic furry gets trapped in a death game for reasons unknown as of January 2nd 2024, and was recruited by his therapist whom he trusted but turned out to be the one recruiting people for the death game.”
• “Has an alcoholic father but a really supportive and sweet mom. Autistic and forced into ABA-adjacent therapy through Midori, who tricked him into signing a consent form and joining the Death Game. He has seen many killed before his eyes during the Death Game and was even a teenager’s therapist.”
• “After being kidnapped by Asunaro, Gin Ibushi has been forced to participate in the “Death Game” along with 10 others. He quickly becomes attached to Sara Chidouin, the main character, and tries his best to help how he can.”
• “(spoilers) diagnosed with autism at a young age and was unable to make friends due to always wearing this costume of a dog (he feels weird without it). sent to the school counsellor where he claimed he could “cure” his autism (for the record the game does not support the idea of “curing” autism, the counsellor is like the big bad). also i think his mom is sick and i know his dad is a drunkard. (not spoilers anymore) then he got kidnapped and forced to play a death game!!!”
Why should they win the tournament?: “Has a nickname for every character, ranging from "Big sis Sara" to "muscle gorilla". Ends all his sentences with either a bark or a meow. Has a plushie in a form of a cat, called Mew-chan which mimicks his expressions and is said to be a able to talk to him. This isn't really explained. Mew-chan is also Gin's best friend. Very funny. During a period in a game where there are a lot of mini games, he gives the main character extra lives when he is chosen as a partner
• “Gin has claws, determination and would totally win.”
• “Because Gin is top tier baby and lowkey was one of the most helpful and brave characters out of YTTD. Like. Lowkey more useful than some of the adults. Also took two straight injections of poison (unwillingly) for an adult who was a cowardly bitch. Also not afraid to make fun of adults. That boy may be mean but damn can he meow!”
• “I love him. Also, a win for autism”
• “Autistic Icon (CANON), Catboy, best baby boy ever, we all love him, he says meow a lot, he calls every woman he meets Big Sis, he has a plushie named Mew-Chan who is actually a dog, he hates alcohol despite he name, HE’S SURVIVED A DEATH GAME (One of THREE!!! survivors out of TWENTY!!)”
• “he is literally the best depiction of a 12-year-old in any media ever, he is genuinely good representation, and he’s so strong in the game”

Note
I just can't find information anywhere but knowledgeable people. I'm asking any person who can help me. You see, I am writing a story in which one of the main characters is autistic. There is very little information on the internet about autistics, or it is unreliable.
I want to ask about you have with the world around you. I mean, I've read that some autistic people have an unusual imagination, a vision of events.
i want to give you the benefit of the doubt on this, but it is difficult. just searching "what is it like to have autism" brings up several videos.
make sure to not watch one person and think you get the whole story. one issue i see with a lot of autistic people talking about their experiences is that they assume the way they see the world is THE way autistic people see the world, which is not true - autism is a spectrum, a very diverse experience. if you really want to represent us faithfully, you have to understand more than one perspective. it seems you haven't done even basic research into this, which is disappointing.
this, this, this, this, this (this guy's whole channel seems to be a good resource from the glance i took), this (another great person, familiar with her stuff), this, this, this, and that's literally just the tip of the iceberg on the WEALTH OF INFORMATION on this subject.
most of what came up in that initial search was white people, but DO NOT FORGET TO LISTEN TO AUTISTIC PEOPLE OF COLOR. pay attention to whose voices you are missing in your research. platforms do not make it easy to find creators of color. seek them out. listen to them. videos here, here, here, here, here, here, here.
articles, not videos, here, here, here (ASAN is an excellent resource), here (suspicious website but good quotes), here (seems to be a good website for articles), here, here
book recommendations: the reason i jump and any other book by naoki higashida, literally any book or article from devon price. haven't read many more but literally just googling "books by autistic people" brings up a lot of good stuff
important note for research: ONLY WATCH OR READ THINGS MADE BY AUTISTIC PEOPLE. any "simulators", any "how to cope with autistic family members", any anecdotes from people who are not autistic but claim to be close with autistic people, THROW. THOSE. OUT. throw out anything related to autism speaks, throw out anything related to puzzle piece imagery, throw out anything advocating for ABA therapy, throw out any autism mom blogs. you'll need to skip over half or more of what you see. ONLY listen to words coming DIRECTLY from autistic people.
other things to avoid: "asperger's" (was a nazi, the term is outdated, any place still using it is suspect), functioning labels (high functioning, low functioning), anything about trying to cure or "change" (dogwhistle for cure) autism
i should not have had to do this for you. i don't know how you were looking for information, but the idea that you somehow couldn't find ANY resources from autistic people voluntarily sharing their experiences is deeply suspect.
do not just use the links i have provided. do more research. there is, in fact, a wealth of information on the autistic experience on the internet.
i should not have had to do this for you.

observations as someone who has been labeled and treated as both a “gifted kid” and a “special needs kid”:
1. the division is racialized. white gifted kids who have never experienced the other side of it you have no idea how racialized it is. that is first and foremost when discussing this — brown and black kids are more likely to be labeled as “special needs” or “problem” children, especially brown and black kids with autism, adhd, etc.
2. the division is arbitrary, and a lot of it is based on how well you behave. which is also arbitrary and, again, racialized.
3. the division is enforced by a system that wants to foster animosity between students. as a special needs kid, you grow to resent the gifted kids for their golden child status. as a gifted kid, you are taught to resent the special needs kids for a lot of shit, least of which being that they’re Just Not As Smart As You.
4. the division is a blurry line. i was put in a “gifted reading program” in first grade that was actually unlicensed and illegal ABA therapy. was this placing me in a box of “gifted” or of “special needs”? if i wasn’t autistic, would i have still been subjected to this program? what about future programs that put pressure on me and ultimately revealed the cracks in my “gifted” facade and led to me entering an alternative highschool?
5. the division being stupid, arbitrary, and ultimately pointless does not mean that gifted kids who have never experienced the other side of things do not need to analyze their ableism. it is something that is drilled into the skulls of “gifted kids” and often times those who have never experienced the other side of it do not get an opportunity to unlearn it. i cannot tell you how many gifted students i’ve met that have agreed with me on all these points, but still looked down at me for going to “the stupid school” (or made snide remarks about how wow, me, going to THAT school?) or not graduating at the same time as them.
