For people with actual culture and the ability to actual appreciate art and read critically, Vampire in the Garden is a beautiful, heart-felt take on classic star-crossed lovers via the medium of music in a painterly, evocative setting of the decaying culture of Russia’s slide from tsarist decadence into militant communist utilitarianism.
Tumblr media
Where Humans have retreated behind tall concrete walls and use industrial technology, military might, and hard labour to survive the onslaught of blood-thirsty vampires and the cold of winter, the vampires live amidst decaying palaces and mansions awash in the lingering remnants of art, music, and history as their lower classes lose their minds to their hunger and their base instincts, starving for blood. Among them, our protagonists are both outcasts; a human girl disillusioned with the bleak and joyless life of the stronghold desperate for meaning, and the Queen of vampires, equally disheartened by the meaningless brutality and decline of her people and burdened by the tragedy of her lost love, who meet in the dark of night, both of their yearnings for more connected by the simple act of mournful song as they travel together to search for a paradise where they can live together, human and vampire and appreciate music and love in peace. Frankly; this movie is beautiful. The aesthetic of post-revolutionary industrial Russia feels under-utilized in similar media, and the depiction of the snowy reaches and dilapidated mansions as both harsh and deadly but also beautiful and serene comes across clearly between the more gritty struggles of human and vampire existence. Music and visuals are both pristine and evocative, and there’s plenty of vivid imagery reflecting the narrative.
The explicit and central homosexuality of the protagonists as both women-loving-women is integral to the story and serves to enhance the Shakespearean tale of love, war, and tragedy as their struggles to express themselves clash in parallel with the rigid expectations of their societies; a queen expected to marry and breed to continue her imperial bloodline, and a girl expected to surrender personal desires to the uncaring military machine.
No slouches either; the antagonists and deuteragonists of the film are no less ripe for dissection; men and women so wholly committed to the ideology of their regime that reconsideration is impossible; who have given their lives and their love to the cause and would sooner die than be broken by the weight of their sacrifices bearing down on them even as the lies unravel and reality confronts them head on.
I’d absolutely recommend Vampire in the Garden to anyone looking for anime with more artistic integrity and cinematic grandeur than mainstream fare, but it’s absolutely essential that it’s watched as one piece! Despite Netflix’s format and advertising, this is not a television series with 5 episodes! This is a feature-length movie cut into 5 parts! Please watch them all together!

𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: Though he's known as a man of  reason and cold logic, Sherlock secretly covets a life of art and romance. When a bookworm moves next door, he finds himself bewitched, both body and soul. 𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐟𝐟

Y/N sat cross-legged on the doorstep of 221B. She bit her thumbnail and smiled down at her copy of Pride and Prejudice.
Her eyes darted across the pages as she muttered along with the story's script. Her favourite character, the proud Mr Darcy, was about to enter the scene, and though she already knew what would happen next, the anticipation of his arrival had her buzzing.
Though she would never admit it, Y/N's fondness for the regency hero stemmed from her love for someone all too real; her next door neighbour, Sherlock Holmes.
Just last month, she had snagged a flat on Baker Street. As the new tenant of 221D, she found herself living across the hall from London's rising celebrity. It hadn't  taken her more than a first meeting to fall hard for him.
He reminded her of the heroes she read about in her books. Sherlock was very galant, what with his timeless grace and subtle kindness. Even his movements appeared calculated, each motion as deliberate as the printed words in her stories.
As an avid reader of classic literature, Y/N often let passion guide her life. Practicality wasn't her style so much as star-gazing was. Though Sherlock indulged in a hyper-rational philosophy, Y/N liked to think that a bit of discourse added great fun to any lovers' tale.
She flipped a page and leaned back against the door. It wasn't until a black sedan parked by the pavement that she finally looked up.
From her seat on the front steps, Y/N watched with interest as two men stepped out from the car. She recognized Sherlock, but the other was a stranger to her. From the sound of their bickering though, it seemed that both were agitated.
"Dinner was a mistake, Mycroft. The next time you need to consult me, just text."
"Believe me Sherlock, I'm all for skipping the brotherly bonding, but Mother insisted. She's been pestering me all week with late night calls!"
"Don't pick up."
"I can't just ignore her!"
"Why not? I do it all the time."
The men stepped up to the door, too engrossed in their quarrel to notice Y/N.
"Will you be staying long?" Sherlock asked. He reached out to pull the door handle, but it didn't budge.
"Only as long as I need to. I'll give you the case details, then I'll be off. You know how I feel about your... home."
Mycroft stood impatiently while Sherlock fetched a pair of keys from his coat pocket. He glanced at his watch. "At your leisure, brother mine."
"A bit of patience," Sherlock muttered. He tried twisting the keys through the lock, but they jammed midway.
"That's curious," Sherlock said. "It seems we've been barred out. John must have caught wind of your visit."
"You can't be serious."
"Quite."
At that moment, Mycroft looked down and noticed Y/N. "Good grief," he chuffed. "Are you meant to be the porter?"
Y/N felt her cheeks warm. She hadn't meant to stay quiet so long, but wasn't sure at which point to enter the conversation. She stood up quickly. "Sorry about that. I didn't mean to linger."
"Don't mind him," Sherlock sighed. "He simply enjoys rattling off. This is my brother, by the way, Mycroft Holmes. And Mycroft, this is my neighbour, Y/N. She lives just across the hall." Sherlock smiled kindly at her, but quickly turned away.
Mycroft curled his lips reproachfully. "Charmed," he said.
Y/N clutched her book against her chest. "I'm not sure if you recall, Sherlock, but Mrs Hudon said that she was having the locks changed today.
"Annual maintenance?"
"Something like that."
He clicked his tongue. "An advanced warning would have been nice."
"She's been mentioning it all week," Y/N responded lightly.
Sherlock winked. "I can hardly be blamed  for blocking out her ramblings." He tucked his hands into his pockets and leaned back against the door. "Light reading?" he asked, nodding towards Y/N's book.
She glanced down at it and grinned. "It's Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Have you read it?"
"It's a waste of time," Mycroft interrupted. He picked at a loose thread on his jacket. "An atypical romance for its time transformed into an odious cliché. It's been written upon a value system where reason is exchanged for ill-spent devotion." He raised a brow at Y/N, his expression condescending. "My brother and I haven't the time to dawdle over banal narratives. I doubt we even spared the brain cells to remember most of the plot, so if you don't mind, this social call is over. Sherlock, could we please talk elsewhere? This case is of national importance!"
Mycroft turned on his heel and stalked away, expecting his brother to follow.
Y/N stood frozen, embarrassed by the  outburst. She avoided Sherlock's eyes and wondered if he also had a bad impression of her. Perhaps like his brother, he believed her to be a silly reader with too much time on her hands.
She put on a smile before addressing him. "I'm sure you're busy, Mr Holmes. It was very nice seeing you."
She waited for him to leave, but he stalled for a moment. He seemed conflicted, as though he had something to say, but didn't know how to go about doing it.
Finally, he spoke. "In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you..."
Y/N lifted her brows, taken aback by his words. Sherlock cleared his throat, flustered. "I didn't mean-" he coughed. "I believe that's Mr Darcy's line in the book, yes?"
Y/N nodded.
Sherlock adjusted his coat collar before proceeding. "I know that I have a reputation for being disassociated from the more mundane things like art and literature, and I suppose to some extent, it's true." He licked his lips. "But my good sense shouldn't discredit my appreciation for the humanities."
He leaned in close and smiled. "Or my appreciation of you, for that matter."
Y/N looked up at him. "Sherlock," she breathed. "Would you like to borrow my book?" She held it out between them, her only defense for being stunned, and not knowing what to say. She felt light headed in the best way, overwhelmed by the turn of their conversation.
Sherlock's lip twitched upwards. "That's very kind of you," he said. He reached forwards and grasped the book from her hold. His fingers grazed her hand, and sent sparks shooting through her arm.
He pulled back and examined the front cover. "I'll be off then," he said. He glanced at Y/N, a gleam in his eye. "I wouldn't want to keep your book for long. I'm sure I'll be done reading by Friday at any rate. Would you be able to pick it up then? Say, 8:00 at the café next-door? If that doesn't work for you, we could always try for a late dinner."
Y/N laughed, not able to keep the smile off her face. "That works just fine," she said. "A late dinner it is."
Sherlock pushed back on his heel, and tucked the book under his arm. He tried to appear casual, but was just as excited as Y/N at the prospect of their date. He glanced at the pavement where Mycroft waited, but not even his brother's sour expression could dampen his spirits.
"Have a wonderful day, Y/N," he called out, grinning.
Y/N watched as he walked off, looking over his shoulder every few steps. She could still feel his touch, however brief,  upon her skin.
She gazed at him until he finally met his brother and trailed off across the street. Sherlock spared one last look behind him, and flexed the hand that had touched Y/N's.
She smiled.
"A lady's imagination is very rapid," she whispered to herself. "It jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment..."
Y/N ran a hand through her hair, pleased. It seemed that she and Sherlock had the potential for a classic romance after all.

Soooo...I finished a new drawing today - this time featuring Troll-Walt and I also tossed in some Stricklake for you!
Tumblr media
The drawing is my take on the famous classicist Sulpture-Group Amor and Psyche (1787) from the italian sculptor Antonio Canova (which, by the way, is one of my favourite (post antiquity) artworks and myth as well - I am an archaeologist and I guess it shows a little bit ;-)
Here you have a closeup:
Tumblr media
.. . and then I give you some input on the myth, which is a quite compelling tale of two unlikely and star crossed lovers who fall in love involuntarily and only find each other after facing many hardships.
The story that is told most detailed by the roman author Apuleius from the 2nd century A.D. and  basically revolves around Psyche, the beautiful daughter of a king , who is married off against her will to a presumed monster in form of a dragon who only visits her at night in the dark and who she is never allowed to see. Out of curiosity she breaks this rule and it is revealed that the monster is in fact the beautiful God Amor (or Eros in Greek), personification of love and son of the goddess Aphrodite. Her lover then leaves her, feeling betrayed, and Psyche has to face many dangerous adventures. She (almost) dies in the end but is reawakend by Amor (which is shown in the marble group by Canova).
This is my most complex digital drawing so far and it took me quite a while to try to get all the light reflexes well - but I am quite proud of the result - I hope you like it too... (and sorry for the lengthy classics lesson ;-D
Greetings, Michaela

Forgot to ask when Taigong is doing his special chant why did he name those specific gods are they important to him and who are they exactly? I know that Yuanshi is Taigong teacher and that Nüwa is Daji’s boss.
Before me, the King Father of the East, Dongwanggong
Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, is a major figure that frequently appears in Taoist narratives due to her status as the one governing all the Xian women. In contrast, Dongwanggong, the King Father of the East, exists only as her mirror image, barely gets mentioned anywhere, and while he gets the equivalent status of governor of the male Xians, there are a handful of male Xians blatantly above him in the hierarchy. Also, archeological evidence of Xiwangmu's worship is quite a few centuries older than his, so it's pretty well accepted that he was created just to be her counterpart.
To my right, the Flame Emperor, Shennong
Shennong is one of the three divine sovereigns of China. A man with the head of a bull and a great elemental affinity for fire. He was crowned the god of agriculture for teaching humans how to grow crops, weave clothes, and practice commerce. He also earned his status as the god of medicine by testing hundreds of herbs and sorting which were toxic and which were healing. I guess Prometheus is a good comparison point for him, as they share the fire imagery and the history as a granter of knowledge. FGO has him as one of the two gods incorporated into Xu Fu's Saint Graph.
Behind me, the Queen Mother of the West, Xiwangmu
The aforementioned boss of the Xian women. She's originally described in the Classic of Seas and Mountains as a woman with a human face, tiger teeth, a leopard tail, and unkempt hair, but later texts beautify her. She's also responsible for the peaches of immortality and famously offered one to Emperor Wu. She's the goddess of criminal punishment, associated mainly with the five more cruel sentences (marking criminals with tattoos, scraping off noses, cutting off feet, castration, and execution).
Some of her cameos in myths include:
Being the Yellow Emperor strategy teacher, who he calls for help in the battle against Chiyou.
Giving the peaches of immortality to Hou Yi.
Offering a peach of immortality to Emperor Wu.
Being the mother who doesn't let Zhinu (better known by her Japanese name Orihime) be with her mortal lover for 364 days of the year in the tale of the Star-Crossed Lovers.
Hosting the peach party that Sun Wukong raided to steal the peaches of immortality early into the Journey to the West.
Lending her Flag of Clouds to Guang Cheng Zi in the Investiture (and being regularly mentioned as Princess Longji's mother).
To my left, the Mother Goddess, Nüwa
Nuwa is the world creator, who also created mankind in a collaborative project with her husband Fuxi. She has a major part in the Investiture, as you mentioned. After having the honor of seeing her, Emperor Zhou of Shang got too excited and wrote an erotic poem on her temple's walls. Very offended by this, she dispatched our lovely trio of Daji, Hu Ximei, and Wang Guiren to cause the downfall of his empire. However, Daji proved herself to be a callous overachiever and a bad influence on her two companions, so Nuwa sided against her own subordinates in the war.
However, her main myth is about how the primordial gods of fire and water picked up a fight with her and the battle resulted in a hole in Heaven, causing the water of the Milky Way to leak downward, almost causing humanity's extinction. Nuwa used all of her power to patch the hole with colorful rocks and to recover from that, she took a nap she still hasn't woken up from.
May the great Jade Emperor bestow his blessing upon us
Yu Huang Taidi, the Jade Emperor, is the emperor of the celestial realm. Officially he is the direct assistant of Yuanshi Tianzun, and that makes him the most important Chinese god as far as mankind is concerned because the Three Pure Ones above him don't concern themselves with the affairs of either the human or the regular Xian worlds.
under Torch Dragon Zhulong's radiant light!
That's the guy who controls when it's day and when it's night. His eyes are vertically laid in the center of his face, and it gets bright when he opens them and dark when he closes them.

'Andrew Garfield and Tom Hardy are to play the iconic roles of Winston Smith and Big Brother in an audio adaptation of George Orwell's world-famous novel, 1984.
The dystopian tale is set in a nightmarish future, where a superstate named Oceania is held in the grip of a totalitarian leader, whose forces ensure freedom of thought and expression is harshly restricted.
The story unfolds from the perspective of Winston, the archetypal 'everyman', who begins to question the regime and – together with his colleague and lover, Julia (Cynthia Erivo) – seeks out a resistance group called The Brotherhood.
This latest adaptation also features celebrated Fleabag and All of Us Strangers star Andrew Scott as O'Brien, a mysterious figure who crosses paths with Winston and Julia on their journey.
This full cast for the audio drama also features Romesh Ranganathan as Parsons, Natasia Demetriou as Mrs Parsons, Chukwudi Iwuji as Charrington, Francesca Mills as Syme, Katie Leung as Ling and Alex Lawther as Ampleforth.
For Lawther, 1984 marks a reunion with director Destiny Ekaragha, who previously helmed episodes of Channel 4 comedy-drama The End of the F***ing World, which proved to be his breakout project.
Ekaragha said: "This is my first experience directing an audio drama, and what an honour it was to work so closely with a cast of this calibre. I can't wait for everyone to hear what the Andrews, Cynthia and Tom have done with these iconic characters."
1984 will be available to listen to on Audible from Thursday 4th April 2023, marking exactly 40 years since Winston's first diary entry in the classic novel. The title is available for pre-order now through Audible.
In addition to the high-profile actors, the production also features music from Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy and composer Ilan Eshkeri (Informer), who have crafted an original score performed by a 60-piece orchestra at Abbey Road studios.
The soundtrack includes two re-workings of Muse songs.
Aurelie de Troyer, Head of Regional Content, Europe at Audible, added: "This is 1984 like you've never heard it before.
"We've assembled a top team of creatives across the board, and the combination of the principal cast and Matt and Ilan's epic soundtrack is something quite extraordinary.
"Andrew Garfield was born to play Winston – just wait until you hear his performance."'

thinking about Bad Buddy and prequels and tragedies
I was thinking about how the Our Skyy Bad Buddy episodes are a prequel, since we know where Pat and Pran end up in a few years courtesy of episode 12 of the original series and its time skip. We know where they are going to end up, these episodes just fill in the gaps of how they got there, what they went through along the way.
Then I got to thinking about how the original series of Bad Buddy was like a prequel itself because we know where it was probably going - it was built on a foundation of the BL genre and other romance stories (tragedies) from throughout history like Romeo & Juliet (see @shortpplfedup's series on Bad Buddy's parallels to this play) and Kwan & Riam (see @chickenstrangers' post on Bad Buddy's parallels to this story); the how was the part we didn't know. How was this retelling of classic stories going to follow or diverge from what was familiar to us?
Bad Buddy is a BL, a romantic comedy, so we would expect it to end happily... but there is something looming under the surface as well (@chickenstrangers calls it a "thrum of tension") because Bad Buddy is also a tale of star-crossed lovers, unable to be together because of their warring families. We know these stories, they've been told hundreds of times (Romeo & Juliet, Kwan & Riam, The Cowherd & the Weaver Girl, West Side Story...). We know they are usually tragedies.
Like prequels, with tragedies* we usually know where they are going to end up (and often that's where the pain comes from: knowing what ending is coming and not being able to do anything about it).
And Pran knows all this as well as we do - he looks at himself and Pat, and their families, and he sees no way this can end up happily. I talked here about the genre-awareness of Bad Buddy: Pran (and later Pat) don't know they are in a show, but they can recognize the structure of their lives and their love as something that's been done before, the eternal story of star-crossed lovers, and Pran especially is keenly aware that those stories are tragedies (which contributes to Pran's hesitation on the rooftop and through the rest of the series - why start something that probably won't end well?). Knowing the generations of feuding family romance tragedies out there and how they end, how could Pran and Pat imagine a different ending?
Despite that overwhelming history looming behind them, all the times the star-crossed lovers have been separated or died in the name of love, Pran and Pat take the plunge. Maybe it won't turn out like that this time.
Tumblr media
And Pran and Pat didn't leave the "maybe this time it will work out" to chance - they worked for it.
Tumblr media
Pat and Pran saw "This story is a tragedy because it didn't have to end this way" and said, well it won't. At the end of episode 11 they choose not to break up but instead to hide their continued relationship from everyone else - they saw the tragic ending, the typical BL episode 11 break up, and they chose not to go there. They see the patterns their story is following, where it could be heading, and they take control of their own narrative.
In her post about Bad Buddy, tragedies, and queer futurities, @chickenstrangers writes "The idea of choosing happiness is at the core of Bad Buddy." At every turn, Pat and Pran choose happiness. From Pran surrounding himself in smiley faces, to the two of them staying together after episode 11, every part of Bad Buddy is Pat and Pran choosing joy and love in the face of it all (their parents, the star-crossed lovers stories their own lives parallel).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And therein lies the thesis of Bad Buddy: maybe we can't change the world, but we won't let the world change us. It doesn't matter if we can't change the world (our families), all that matters is we still have love for one another despite it all.
There's a lot fighting against Pat and Pran - their families' feuds, their faculties' feuds - and by the end of the series they haven't fixed those things (their parents still don't get along, the next generation of engineering and architecture students are still fighting). But it's ok because the world hasn't changed Pat or Pran: they are still in love, still together.
On the other hand, though, a lot has changed. Pat and Pran's story isn't a tragedy, they refused to let it be. They refused to accept that their ending had been written from the beginning, and they took control of their narrative. Pat says, "We might not be able to change the people around us," but their love did make an impact: their friends came around to them and the engineering and architecture squads ended up friendly, Dissaya and Ming are softening to each other and seem to know about their sons' relationship. In Bad Buddy, choosing love and hope can change the story, can change the world. Just a bit, and slowly, but it can.
And thinking of this, I can't help think of the other stories, besides Romeo & Juliet and Kwan & Riam and the like, which Pat and Pran echo: the long history of queer people who have faced discrimination and hatred, often from those closest to them, but have chosen joy in the face of it. Like so many queer people before them, Pat and Pran say "we can't change the world, but the world can't change us." They reject the idea that their lives have to end in tragedy and choose to make their own futures full of queer joy instead.
Like Pat and Pran slowly changing their family and friends through the persistence of their love, so have queer people changed the world and their own families and friends with the persistence of their love and joy. While there is obviously so far to go, look how far we've come. Look how the queer community has refused to let their stories and lives be a tragedy: one person can't change the world, but a lot of them living their lives and choosing joy and love in the face of it all can. Just a bit, and slowly, but they can.

Hadestown "Road to Hell" (inspired by this post)//post by supreme-leader-stoat//post by starpeace//Bad Buddy ep.11 pt.4//Ovid (translation unknown)
*In the same vein, I've been thinking about all the fairy tale references in the Our Skyy 2 eps (I've spoken at length about Snow White here, here, and here) - fairy tales also function like prequels and tragedies. We are so familiar with them we know how they go and how they are going to end, the details are just what change from retelling to retelling.

Summary of half a dozen Thai BLs
Now that I've watched half a dozen Thai boys' love dramas, I thought I'd sum them up for people who haven't yet watched any, and think that they may want to.
First off: I recommend ALL of these. They're ALL very gay with happy endings. They ALL have fun plots and generally good acting. (There are some actors who knock it out of the park more than others, but they're spread out over all the different shows, and some appear in more than one.) If you're only going to watch one and you don't care about genre, I'm going to say Moonlight Chicken, but if it actually matters to you what the show is about and what kind of story it is, here's a summary of them all (in the order I watched them):
Moonlight Chicken
What's it about: The owner of a diner hooks up with a customer late one night, but is hesitant to let the encounter turn into a proper relationship.
Genre: Slice of life
Watch if you enjoy: Messy characters who get tangled in relationships in different ways. Family, including found family, and multiple gay couples. A fairly realistic view of gay life in Thailand (including the impact of a lack of marriage equality), and also issues such as class, disability, and the multiple effects of the covid crisis. My first BL and still my favourite.
Gayer version of: a Mike Leigh movie
A Tale of Thousand Stars
What's it about: A rich guy who gets a heart transplant decides to make his life useful by taking up the profession the donor left behind, namely as a volunteer teacher in a remote mountain village. There to teach him the ropes is a stern forest ranger.
Genre: Classic romance
Watch if you enjoy: People who are so in love everyone can see it, but still take ages to admit it. Secrets and lies. Scenes with cute children. The same main actors as in Moonlight Chicken. Pretty boys crying/fainting/in mortal danger.
Gayer version of: The Sound of Music
Bad Buddy
What's it about: The sons of two rival families, who are also members of rival university faculties, are way more in love with each other than they're willing to admit, even to themselves.
Genre: Romcom (or romantic dramedy, it gets pretty serious at times)
Watch if you enjoy: Belligerent sexual tension. Chemistry so thick you can slice it with a knife. The couple getting together halfway through the show, and that's just the start of their troubles. Environmental issues on the side. Adorable lesbian side couple. Love songs. Metaphorical homophobia in a world with no actual homophobia.
Gayer (and happier) version of: Romeo and Juliet
He's Coming to Me
What's it about: Lonely ghost who can't seem to move on makes friends with a young boy who is the only one who can see him.
Genre: Paranormal romance with a side of murder mystery
Watch if you enjoy: Cute ghosts. The hijinks when people don't know that the ghost is there. Having your heart broken only to have it mended again. Absolute himbo main characters. Fantastic coming out scene. Surprisingly cute het side couple.
Gayer version of: Julie and the Phantoms
Not Me
What's it about: After a young activist is beaten into a coma, his twin brother secretly takes his place, trying to find out what happened.
Genre: Action-adventure with a political bent
Watch if you enjoy: Bikers doing parkour. The softest babiest man in existence trying to pass himself off as a badass. Lots of discussions about law and justice, and absolutely wrecking the lives of rich assholes. Any of the following: Enemies to lovers, lovers to enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, or friends and possibly lovers to enemies.
Gayer version of: The Parent Trap crossed with Face/Off.
The Eclipse
What's it about: Rules at a high school are strictly enforced, with threat of a "curse" against those who break it. A rebellious new recruit immediately clashes with the head of the prefect club.
Genre: High school drama, mystery
Watch if you enjoy: Aggressive flirting. Teenage rebellion. Old stuffy school being shaken up. Getting to see First and Khaotung stretch their acting muscles (they play side characters in some of the shows above). Multiple gay characters. Homophobia dealt with directly as well as indirectly.
Gayer version of: Dead Poets' Society
Feel free to ask questions if you want to know more! Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to try a seventh show. :-)

Lightcannon (Jinx/Lux aka my otp)
100 Beautiful and Ugly Words by elocuentelegance on Ao3 - This one got me addicted to Lightcannon as a ship. No happy ending, no end. But it's still so well written and satisfying to read in a sort of masochistic way.
Friction Coefficient by @blood-lich-crow - College AU, bad girl/good girl enemies to lovers. The descriptions and inner dialogues of the characters as well as their interactions, angst, and chemistry are so good. Plus there's a smutty side fic.
I Am the Thing with the Teeth that Lives in the Walls by @questionablecuttlefish - Gothic Horror with a scary haunted mansion and lesbians? Hell yes.
Love has all the Answers by TieDyeKing on Ao3 - Just a cute Modern AU in which Jinx and Lux are both SO into each other but just so oblivious and it's honestly adorable.
A Piltover Student in Demacia by @natdammit - I never got around to reading the CaitVi-centric part but this was so absolutely perfect. Powder is such a brave and crazy genius like she should've gotten the chance to be and she and Lux are so perfect together there is so much world-building and an amazing plot.
My Obsession, a Yandere's Tale by @cannibalelf - Sort of a Smut Crackfic, it's some of the most fun and hottest things I've ever read. Told from Lux's POV, a totally obsessed horny bastard. They also have soft moments sometimes.
Piltover's Prep Bullying Problem by Tanis_Zed on Ao3 - Another smut crackfic with Lux as a complete sub-masochist and Jinx as a bad bitch with anger management issues who's actually a softie. Good stuff.
A Bad Night by Vixie on Ao3 - Very kinky breathplay but it's honestly kind of sweet.
Lightcannon, but Star Guardians:
Don't Lose My Number by StarCola on Ao3 - A literal SG classic, the attention to detail on the formatting and also the characterization and storytelling through the chatroom medium are stunning.
Crossing Stars by @calchexxis - I think this is a work of art, like all of their works honestly. But I think this one isn't as talked about and it's so amazing... It has action, drama, mystery, feels, angst, it's so good... oh, not to mention four words: 'In every single dream.'
Leaving Safe Places by @ghostcairo173 - Very sweet first part, and then the second one hits you with the angst and scary vibe. They are just so cute together and I adore the way the friends-to-lovers is depicted.
Birds and Boats by @mira-blue - The first SG LC I read. It's very cute and the characters feel so real, love it so much.
Oroborus by @kattypixxhu - This is honestly just such a poetic and emotional smut piece I was obsessed when I read it.
Special CaitVi Mention:
Butterflies don't Belong in Zoos by AmberZ10 on Ao3 - Modern Popstar AU, it kinda inspired my B.I.G. Feelings fic with Jinx's characterization. The way it incorporates songs is brilliant, and the plot is very compelling.
Special CaitJinx Mention:
'A proper drink' by @heroinejinx - It doesn't feel so much like a crackship when I read this, they make so much sense, and they're so cute together. I love the angst and the guilt they both feel and how still that doesn't stop them, it's just perfect. Makes me wanna read more CaitJinx heh.

Montagues and Capulets
And he will make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun. — William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, Act III, Scene II
Teacher Sani’s lesson in episode two deals with the classic story of Romeo and Juliet, the tragic tale of two star-crossed lovers. She offers the students the above quote (which deals with the Sun, a symbol we see throughout this show, in regards to the night where the Moon exists and is the more important symbol here).
Thua explains that this quote is about Juliet’s “big love” for Romeo, but even more, it’s about her desire to consummate her love for Romeo. Juliet is waiting in her garden for night to fall, so she and Romeo can get married under the cloak of darkness, and finally be together. (Spoiler - her nurse delivers the news that Romeo is being imprisoned instead)
When Teacher Sani is presenting this lesson, she is wearing red, which is symbolic of love and passion, and after that, we see the color symbolize both Akk and Kan's awakening.
Tumblr media
Teacher Sani works in the Student Welfare Office, which has a red door. This is where the students have passionate conversations and protests and is where Chadok and Ayan have a conversation about the necklace, which was given with love (by Dika who worked in that office with Chadok!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Akk and Ayan have been seen together in red-adjacent settings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But after this lesson, we see the attraction genuinely shift.
By the end of the episode, Ayan is surrounded by red, and the realization that Akk actually likes him can no longer be avoided.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The red flash drive begins Thua and Kan’s arch of acknowledging their love for each other. Right afterward, Akk confesses that Thua took the blame for Kan’s failure to produce the assignment, and shortly after that Namo tells Thua that Kan was late because he was defending Thua.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the next episode, both of the boys are startled when they observe Thua and Ayan interacting in public, but even more so, we see the red wall directly behind the two, highlighting that they are the objects of desire for the observers.
Tumblr media
Kan is more outwardly upset about this interaction, and it shows in his next scene with Thua how quickly his love for Thua has exploded from a mere flash drive into an actual large barrier that he leans on. They can no longer contain it the way they did before. Throughout the conversation, Kan keeps trying to cover up his true emotion, but now that he has been exposed, he struggles to find his footing. He could simply walk around it or through it (there is an opening between the bookcase and the pillar), yet physically, both boys stay stuck on their side, but their love for each other is so apparent, that the foundation of their friendship becomes blurry.
Tumblr media
Because of this, Kan begins to fight back against his attraction, unlike Akk who decides to spend even MORE time with Ayan OUTSIDE of school.
Tumblr media
Throughout this episode, we also see Ayan, once again, surrounded by red. Not only as a love interest to Akk, but as a passionate leader of the protestors.
Tumblr media
But after spending more time with Akk outside of school, both boys are engulfed in their newly awakened desires.
Tumblr media
To reinforce this theme of star-crossed lovers, in most filmed versions of the play, the Capulets (Juliet) are shown in red attire while the Montagues (Romeo) are shown in blue attire, which Akk and Kan possess through the blue prefect armband they must always wear.
Also, the Capulets are more excessive in their display of wealth while the Montagues are more reserved. Thua and Ayan appear to have a higher socioeconomic status than Akk and Kan.

5 & 6 for the worldbuilding game!
What are some cliches, tropes, and/or plots that commonly appear in stories written by your world’s inhabitants? What were they inspired by? Why are they popular?
Iegoan fairytales, dramas, and poems are famously extremely melodramatic, and a common trope (particularly in the realm of romance) is that of star-crossed lovers. The most common incarnation of this is the classic "human man, Diathim woman" love story: the tale will inevitably end with either the ill-fated couple parting ways, or one fatally succumbing to the power of the other.
An outsider might regard this as an Iegoan obsession with sorrow, but the truth lies in the fact that the indigenous near-human ethnicity, the Diathui, emerged from such couplings. Humans and Diathim are genetically compatible to a fault; as the Diathim are the physical manifestations of pure light, they can theoretically reproduce with any sentient, but will always die in the process.
What is a common way to subtly insult someone in your world, without crossing into overt rudeness? Gifting an item with negative connotations? Addressing them more familiarly or formally than normal? Backhanded compliments?
As the importance of charity is emphasized in Drolism, the native Iegoan religion, it would be taboo to turn someone away completely. However, giving someone the cold shoulder would be done in the form of excessive formality. For as charitable and welcoming as the Iegoans are, they are fiercely secretive and protective of their communities, especially when it comes to dealing with (unwelcome) outsiders. Knowing how tight-knit the villages can be, being excluded from the warmth of that community is considered the biggest insult of all.

Hi! I’ll be honest I watch almost all tv while playing games on my little phone bc my brain is rotted 😌
So I missed the Romeo imagery! Would you mind going into it more, it sounds so interesting. If you don’t want to that’s fine but pls know that I love your blog 🤍
Understandable, anon. There’s nothing wrong with a little brainrot. And ty! ❤️
First off, I wrote a whole essay on how Season 3 played with the Romeo & Juliet archetype and how it applies to Mike & El shortly after the season dropped – as satire, mind. It was never intended to be taken seriously; was just food for thought because my brain was salivating over the parallels.
Textually, we’re presented with Dustin saying the thing – “it’s all a bit Shakespearean. Like Romeo and Juliet. Star-crossed lovers” – just as Mike and El slip out of frame. And when they reappear in the next shot, a wide shot to emphasize the creation of distance, they’re alone, now separate from the others. On-screen, they’re physically isolated. The plan is to run off and spend quality time together, regardless of their friends’ feelings on the matter.
Subtextually, this isolation is more emotional than literal. Really, what they’ve done is put distance between their loved-ones and their love for one another; the two things don’t yet coexist. They’ve not mastered the art of juggling romance with friendship. These types of relationships are of equal importance, but they’re fourteen and in love for the first time ever – expecting hormonal teenagers, when one of them is far from your typical girl next door and doesn’t have a clean grasp of social norms to begin with, to manage their free time so well feels a little unreasonable.
So we let them off the hook, for a time, the way we don’t let Romeo and Juliet off. The play is, I guess depending on how you interpret it, written as a satire about the foolhardiness of young love. ‘Stranger Things’ isn’t that. Mike and El’s relationship isn’t that. They’re not a cautionary tale. The words ‘star-crossed’ spoken on screen as they seemingly choose one another over everybody else is, if anything, ironic. It's not a surefire sign that they’re doomed — I peg that belief down to how loosely the term is thrown about because it’s so overused in media.
‘Star-crossed’ has many meanings, but in their case specifically it refers to the fact they weren’t fated to meet. It wasn’t the universe’s plan – For a show called “Stranger Things” it only seems appropriate the core romance exists by mere chance. A happy accident. Mike says as much in Season 4: “It’s not fate. It’s not destiny. It’s just simple dumb luck.” Keep in mind, this is the same Mike who starts the series as an idealist, an optimist. Mike, who’s lovestruck and supposedly falls for a girl upon seeing her. Sound like anybody familiar? Mike is a classic romantic character – avid book readers, you get what I’m saying – and who is more romantic than the Montague boy who gets a whole archetype named after him? Only the difference between the two is that Mike is afforded the privilege of growing up, and maturing – something his counterpart never experiences.
At surface level, Mike is easy to get: he’s nice, and he’s protective over his friends, but he can be a bit of a jerk sometimes. In truth, he’s a lot more complex than that, which might explain why so many people seem to have trouble understanding or sympathizing with him now that he’s come more into his own. Mike fills a stereotypically feminine role within the story, supporting the (traditionally male) hero, while also serving as the love interest for the female protagonist within her coming-of-age story. He has to be the nurturing, caregiver to the hero and be her suitor. That’s… an anomaly, especially when the character is written so young. But Mike is aware of both of these roles: he’s been there for El since the start, and never hesitates to be her support system when she needs it. His struggle, however, has always been living up to the romantic standards that he sets for himself. He’s never quite sure how to express his feelings because, really, there’s no precedent, no roadmap on how to love a supernaturally-gifted neurodivergent abuse survivor. He’s in the dark. He has no male role model to look up to for guidance. Throw in insecurities and feelings of unworthiness, no doubt fueled by the fact that the person he wants more than anything is super-worthy, and suddenly it’s lights-out when it comes to Mike giving a long-winded declaration of love until… Cue the stoner and the pizza oven.
We’re in a moment of crisis, it’s looking like the world’s about to end, but then… suddenly… there it is… a glimmer of hope… just behind Mike, in the greasy, warmly-lit back kitchen of a pizza chain restaurant in the middle of mumblefuck Nevada… a Montague pizza oven. Does the name ring a bell?
Now here’s the thing: I wrote that essay in 2019 as a joke, mostly for myself because I found it funny and it didn’t matter if anybody else even read it. But then we get to the Season 4 finale, and Argyle says, “Surf’s up, Romeo” just as Mike’s about to say something no-doubt both corny and perfect-to-El’s-ears, and I – who have been on this hill for like four years now – yell at the screen, “You motherfucker!” So I grin and I shake my head, but I let it go because we’ve got bigger shit to worry about – the salt bath is ready, after all. And then the episode continues, and our boy finally gives his whole spiel in a blur of flickering lights and banging score, and I move on. The episode ends and we wait for Season 5.
Until one day, I get a little too bored and I analyse the hell out of every frame in that particular scene, and I’m not too proud to say I let out a shriek when I see it. Mike’s giving this impassioned monologue about how much he loves El, meanwhile the literary character he’s essentially emulating is behind him the whole time; in last name only, sure, but it’s there, and that can’t be a coincidence. If it is, that is a strange fucking thing indeed.
From that point on, I can’t unsee it, so naturally I tweet about it, and reddit gets wind of it, and then the people – you know the ones – who won’t let two characters so much as blink without taking it out of context get a hold of it, and suddenly it’s like I’ve taken Mike & El out to the back of the barn to be shot dead between the eyes. Because, uh, apparently having the name of perhaps the most infamous fictional lover of all time in frame during a declaration of love, shortly after the person uttering said declaration has just been teasingly nicknamed it, is supposed to be a bad thing?
It’s almost like the people who took this out of context didn’t understand that Mike and El’s relationship isn’t a clear copy-paste of the star-crossed archetype – if they ever even picked up on it in the first place — I guarantee they didn’t. There’s no doom and gloom. There’s no (lasting) death trope. There’s the defiance of stars because they quite literally stumbled on each other in the woods and they have to work at romance, at conquering roadblocks and meddling fathers (which is a whole other thing I could get into) and the universe seems to want to keep them apart.
But the thing is, we know what they’ve been through. We’re supposed to understand their plight because we’ve had four seasons of it now; you’re either on board at this point or not. You know that their trauma precedes whatever selfishness they may display – in past seasons and going forward – because you’ve witness it firsthand. They grow as individuals and as a pair because of their choices, unlike Romeo and Juliet whose death is the consequence of poor decision-making.
Mike isn’t compared to Romeo, in dialogue or even subtextually, because he’s a lovestruck idiot who lets his feelings guide him. He’s hopelessly in love and starts off as a doe-eyed idealist, sure, but he now has the maturity and self-awareness of someone who’s been given the time to think about what love truly means and how to make room for it — to not let it become all-consuming.
He might believe in love at first sight, but he’s under no illusions that the love he has for El was anything but a choice he made. He chose to help her, just as he chooses to continuously love her despite everything telling him not to, despite everything standing in their way. Suggesting their meeting was simply dumb luck and not destiny at work implies the added belief that things happen outside of their control and still… he chose to take her home that night. Fuck fate.
That’s the Romeo thing.

Holding a Quantum Cat by its Schrödinger's Tail: A Ride Through the Microcosmic Madness
Hey there, you intrepid souls of the internet! Strap yourselves in and hold onto your beanie hats because we’re about to serve up something that’ll make your neurons do backflips. Remember those times in science class when your teacher mentioned quantum mechanics and everyone’s eyes glazed over? Well, forget that snoozefest because we're about to reintroduce you to quantum mechanics in a way that's as far from boring as the Earth is from the edge of the observable universe (which is, FYI, pretty darn far).
We’ve all heard of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, right? Classic tale of one man with two wildly different personalities – the proper, buttoned-up Dr. Jekyll and his unhinged alter-ego, Mr. Hyde. Now, imagine these two hosting a TV show about quantum mechanics. Sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen? More like the most bizarrely enlightening crash course in the microcosmic universe you'll ever witness!
First up, Dr. Jekyll will swoon over atoms like they’re delicate flowers in an English garden – with protons playing the part of the noble knights, and electrons as these flittering, unpredictable creatures that you just can’t pin down (literally). He’s all about the poise and eloquence, painting a picture of the atomic world that’s more like a Renaissance painting than a high school textbook diagram.
But wait, there’s more! Just when you think you’re wading through a Victorian novel, in bursts Mr. Hyde – tearing down the fancy language and giving it to you straight. He sees atoms more like a rowdy bar on a Friday night, with electrons as the shady characters slipping through your fingers just when you think you've caught them.
And oh boy, when they get to wave-particle duality, it’s like a comedy show. Dr. Jekyll waxes poetic about particles being waves and waves being particles, in a manner most scholars and romantics would appreciate. But Mr. Hyde? He compares it to a drunkard staggering home, sometimes walking straight like a normal person (particle), and sometimes swerving like a snake (wave).
But wait, there's a plot twist! Just when you think it can't get wackier, they start talking about quantum entanglement. Picture this: Dr. Jekyll eloquently describes it as a mystical connection transcending space and time, like star-crossed lovers' hearts beating in unison across galaxies. Enter Mr. Hyde, scoffing at that notion, likening it instead to gossipy neighbors who can’t help but mirror each other’s dramatic reactions.
As we wind down this wild ride, we confront the infamous Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle. Dr. Jekyll will likely get all philosophical about it, musing on the nature of reality and our place in the universe. Hyde? He’ll probably just grumble about how it’s as impossible as taking a clear photo of a running squirrel on your first try.
So, there you have it, folks. If your brain’s not buzzing like a bee after this, check if you’re still awake. It's quantum mechanics narrated by the most unexpected duo since peanut butter met jelly. And just between us – it’s a way more thrilling story than anything about apples falling on people’s heads. Tune in, geek out, and who knows – you might just end up loving quantum mechanics more than cat videos on the internet. Maybe.

Knowing Y continues our watch and analysis of the Eclipse. With so much conversations about the youth’s self exploration, discovery and identity, it made me squeal they mentioned a known classic tale about most of that especially in the two young lovers who struggle against the old systems, traditions, laws and duties. Yes it’s our star crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet! Here’s an infographic on the other themes explored in this show. Let us know what you think about the themes and what else you noticed so we can add more and make more infographics. The Eclipse has been an interesting show so far, it’s themes are very obvious and very touching and the characters keep showing layers and dimensionality that is interesting to explore. Also directed by A known non binary political figure , it’s incredible that we get to see this in our screens❤️
